Reviews for Keekorok Lodge
Review 1:Two things, both beyond the hotel's control. 1. Loss of electrical power at certain times of day, due to power rationing. 2. I was told in advance that I could pay the Masai Mara park fees by credit card - but on arrival at the park entrance, I found that I couldn't, as the system had gone down. So I had to pay it all in cash, when I was carrying barely enough. Advice to other travellers is, always carry a good reserve of cash in Kenya, just in case!
Review 2:We travelled independently, driving from Nairobi in a hired car. While at Keekorok, we hired a local guide ( a real Masai ) to accompany us on two private game drives, for a very modest price of $60. He was an expert, and we found plenty of animals, including ten lions.
Review 3:The hotel is absolutely NOT a 5 star hotel! The rooms were small and outdated as well as the bathrooms. There were dead insects everywhere, mold on the ceiling of the bathroom ( which we noticed last day). The doors made a horrible sound whenever you used them! There was no wifi anywhere else besides the reception area even if they advertise free wifi everywhere. The food is absolutely terrible!! Mainly rice and potatoes, some very dry meat/ fish with every meal. One had to stay in a loong line for the main dish, usually eggs in the morning or fish during lunchtime. They had no sparkling mineral water, no house wine and tried to make you buy a very expansive bottle of wine every time you asked for a glass of wine. We had to call for their manager twice in order to solve this. Every child seat they brought for my child was broken so the food tray kept falling on the floor! The pool area is depressing! They have very few, destroyed sunbeds which were kept occupied by the same guests the whole day even when they weren't there. When asked about that, the staff nodded and that was it! The cleaning lady came the last day at 6 o'clock, taking out garbage, changing the sheets and making a lot of noise! All in all, we do not recommend this hotel at all, it's run down and offers horrible standard! Frankly, I am very dissapointed of some reviews here. Had I known the reality, I would have never chosen this hotel!
Review 4:The location. Also the fact that they have a hippo pool on the property and the nicely trimed garden.
Review 5:False advertising about the hotel being 5 star and there were no kids activities, they only had limited beverages and ran out of even Coke light, sparkling water, gin etc and didn't have until we left on day 4. The internet is only at the reception and they lie by advertising free internet as it never works elsewhere on the premises and the staff know about it but nothing has been done to rectify that. The food was also not consistent and it got worse after peek season I guess they don't care when there's less people staying there...they forget our money keeps the business going...I would rate the hotel 3 star as I've travelled the world and stayed in hundreds of hotels and this one I would NOT recommend to anyone but I would recommend a stay in a better hotel inside the park. I heard the hotel used to be good but they are under new management now and everything is going downhill!!
Review 6:The location was good and the staff in the restaurant especially David M was great. The hotel and facilities are not worth the money.
Review 7:The Christmas meal was really badly organized. The whole hotel 215people were asked to arrive for the meal at the same time. The poorkitchen staff had to deal with very harsh comments from angry guestswhich was very sad to hear especially on Christmas. Management shouldconsider a staggered start which families with kids eating early andthen other parties coming every 20 minutes to avoid the cues. The foodwasn't as bad as I expected after reading a lot of other reviews. Awider variety between days would be nice as we were there for 4 days andall pretty similar flavors.
Review 8:The staff were unbelievably friendly and ensured we left with a fewnew Swahili words. The facilities were great as for the Hippo Pool -such a bonus!!
Review 9:The facility is getting a bit run down and it shows in many areas, the bathrooms in the lobby and also the shower in the room. Also it was a lot of Indian food being served, it could have been a bit more varied. It tasted great though!
Review 10:Location, service and staff were all great. They really went above and beyond when they got up in the middle of the night to cook for me.
Review 11:We felt overcharged: First the pesron at the desk said that they charge 1500KSH for a 2 hour game drive in our car: they provide the guide. This got revised to 3000 KSH. While paying, we had a booking.vom estimate of INR 54000/- + taxes. This came to 110K KSH. However they charged 120K KSH and would not or could not show us the tarrif. The only thing the gentleman at the desk(Dominic) kept repeating was their charge was 288.6 USD per night . Also we never got the bill despite asking for it
Review 12:We had a good reception and they arranged a great guide for us. The cleaning was great and staff courteous. The greates thing was the guide Joseph who has been a ranger too and knew the Mara roads and tracks like the back of his hand
Review 13:None
Review 14:Great lodge in the middle of the Masai Mara with no fences so it felt a part of the bush. Excellent and friendly staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Wonderful game drives and views of a large variety of animals and birds from the verandah of our chalet which faced out over the bush
Review 15:A lot of Indian food. Sometimes the supper food were served for breakfast the next day....like spinach and potatoes.
Review 16:The rooms were very comfortable and clean. Great salads and desserts and the coffee was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The location was great as we could travel to the north, east and south and cross the Mara river. We also witness a river crossing twice. The planes were covered in wildebeest and we saw the big 5 more than once. The vastness of the Mara is so impressive and the amount of animals to be seen is more than amazing! The animals are fat as food is in excess! I am mad abpout the wildebeest - such a precarious animal.... I can recommend the Keekorok lodge and a 5 day stay is perfect!
Review 17:First day there was no hot water, Literally no water came out of the hot water tap. Second day no hot water, reception fixed it. Wifi didn't work for the hole time.
Review 18:The Lodge is very nice and big. Rooms looks good. Food was good, breakfast was very good.
Review 19:Nothing to complain about...
Review 20:Friendly staff, was well treated and felt like a prince in the beautiful jungle of Kenya... It was an amazing time at the lodge
Review 21:Week wi-fi link, a distance of 2 kms for pick up -drop is being exoburntly charged without any prior confirmation in the booking voucher
Review 22:Staff hospitality, decor, cleanliness and comfort
Review 23:The Lodge is quiet and comfortable. Wonderful to spend time at the hippo pond. We did not even go on a safari (do to time constraints) and we still had a wonderful time in the Massai Mara.
Review 24:Food could be improved. Not bad but could be better in variety.
Review 25:A comfortable and excellent base for safari in Mara. Staff go the extra mile, nothing is too much. Great customer service. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Will return. Recommend it.
Review 26:The hotel rooms we in desperate need of renovation especially the bathrooms..leaky toilets & dampness in bathrooms. Cement falling from door ways when there were being closed especially in the bathrooms. The hotel food was very poor as well.
Review 27:The game in that part of Mara, lots if Zebra & wild beast preparing for migration & the resident hippos. No fence bonus of watching the game from your balcony if you get views facing the reserve.
Review 28:Friendly, helpful and informative staff Clean Bathrooms and Bedrooms Good Food Relaxing environment A variety of game-drive options Knowledgeable Guides Unleaded and Diesel gasoline available for personal vehicles on-site Petrol
Review 29:The wifi. Although kept us far from reality. Somewhat nice. The food could be a tad better.
Review 30:Almost everything! Great place no fences and animals were coming over to the room. Always well attended by massai guards and the staff is great. Thank to Judy Nimmoh and the staff at the restaurant. James an our personal waiter David. We felt like at home
Review 31:Electricity is rationed 3 times a day which is okay unless you're coming in during the summer. Full board does not mean buffet although that's what I was told. I stayed 3 days and had 2 buffet dinners + 2 buffet breakfasts. Rest was ala carte. Wifi is only at the main lodge and when I stayed, it was atrocious. Kept disconnecting even though they tried fixing it. Game drives are $60 per person for 2-3 hours. You're better off booking a car for 6-7 for $500 for the full day.
Review 32:Private comfortable lodges. Lots of animals on property- Resident hippos, monkeys, babboons, squirrels, etc and elephants come grazing sometimes. They have no fence so it's exciting (although beware, you're not allowed to walk outside alone after dark) Lovely, welcoming staff
Review 33:- Poor wifi connectivity - The range of the wifi is limited to the central area of the lodge when it is available. - No in-room wifi
Review 34:- The location and overall facilities - The excellent, friendly and accommodating staff - The decor and layout of the chalets - The great view of the Savannah and the close proximity of the wildlife including predators - F&B was good for the remote location
Review 35:Traveling with small children, it was difficult to have a 7:30pm dinner time (which usually meant 7:45pm as they weren't punctual in setup). Also, there is need for some facility upkeep to happen - we had tiles coming up on the floor, the entrance needs to be re-grated - just small things, but they need to be done for a lodge of this caliber.
Review 36:Lovely location with great facilities/grounds. The staff were always accommodating for our needs. We enjoyed the pool, Hippo Bar and walkway, and great rate received on booking.com. Having stayed at lodges outside the park before, it was nice to be within the park this time.
Review 37:The food was inadequate, no variety. Needs a lot to improve on food. the hotel was not prepared to handle the number of visitors. Please improve.
Review 38:Pan cakes
Review 39:There was honestly nothing I didn't like.
Review 40:Seeing elephants and giraffes from our bedroom balcony. Wonderful game drives. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. We had a wonderful driver/guide named Andrew who really helped with his knowledge of the Massi Mara. A two night stay is ideal. It allows for an afternoon drive an all day drive, and a final visit before breakfast. We didn't have time to enjoy the pool, as too busy on safari.
Review 41:I only wish Wi-Fi had been available in the room. The water temperature for showers wasn't steaming hot.
Review 42:No better location in the Mara. The staff was so friendly and accomodating. They called our room ahead of each meal. ...and so much food, all good. Loved everything. An amazing experience.
Review 43:I had greater expactations of the WIFI, free WiFi was available in the lobby, however, we did not managed to get free wifi service in the room.
Review 44:Great personel, good rooms, good food.
Review 45:The hotel charges 30 USD/person to pick you up from the airportstrip, which is only 3 km away. Since you are not allowed to walk to thehotel due to the wild animals, that charge seems like a clever way toforce money out of guests - it is not a very elegant arrangement from ahotel that otherwise does a good job.
Review 46:We stayed in one of the huts and they are beautiful. Thought has beenput into every detail of the decor, and the bed was very comfortable. The staff is very polite and professional, and if you go on game driveswith the Keekorok staff you will find that they are knowledgeable andhappy to show you around. The quality of the food in the buffet isgood, with lots of variety, and they have good wines as well. If youare looking for a very personal/authentic masai experience, thishotel might not be for you. If you want to visit the Mara it isperfect, but if you really want to get close to the Masai culture, itis not suitable.
Review 47:- Wi-Fi access only in lobby - Wi-Fi password could not be shared (???), but for whatever reason hotel employee had to type it on my PC - Power outages for half a day (if this was described when doing reservation, at least I could prepare myself) - Transfer from/to airport is a rip-off !!! paying $30 USD per person, per transfer for 2 miles trip is non-sense
Review 48:- room was clean - staff in general very polite - good location for safari (already inside of Masai Mara national park)
Review 49:The tourist vehicles coming so close to the rooms.
Review 50:The hotel is so close to game. We were literally living 20 ft away from hippos, and maybe a 100 ft from bull; zebra; wild best. Nearest lion we saw was just within the first kilometre.
Review 51:Perfect location inside Masaai Mara. Staff was amazing, very friendly and helped with the kids and they were very kind to them. Food was amazing, we stayed in a chalet, which was very nice. We had a fantastic time there, no faults!
Review 52:Food. Quality, quantity and selection of food very poor. It seems that European visitors are not being catered for anymore. Most food suited to Asian guests. Rooms are looking tired, have stayed in most areas of the lodge and noticed that most rooms now need some attention...loose taps, cracked tiles, peeling paint etc. The prices for this lodge keep going up but sadly the quality is going down.
Review 53:The staff and location of keekorok are fantastic, have stayed about 15 times over the last 10 years. Game drives and knowledge of guides second to none.
Review 54:The wi fi for presidential suit is said to be free of charge, but in the reality it was limited just in the lobby.
Review 55:Staffs were very helpful and friendly. The location and surroundings are great.
Review 56:Leaving !
Review 57:This place has a stunning location that makes it exceptional. A nice lodge with excellent friendly staff and reasonable prices. Superb Game drives at the lodge with excellent drivers and close to an airstrip.
Review 58:Lunch packs for the Game Drive may require improvement.
Review 59:Facility is a perfect resting place after a day of Safari Game Drive. Even if you don't ... the Facility itself offers a relaxing venue. Buffet dining has a variety of Tasteful experience. Staff are courteous and wonderful to be with. They make you feel at home and secure.
Review 60:Staff are inclined to treat all like 'naive tourists'. Not enough attention to detail. Inclined to talk more at visitors, than listen before answering. Coordination, communication and efficiency relatively poor for example comparing to South African park lodges. They rely on the splendour of Mara park and the migration to carry perhaps some rather ordinary hospitality. Got the impression that there is maybe no competition, or demand exceeds supply so they don't need to be competitive. I think they treat the tourists like a sausage machine. Much attention thrown at you but I felt that it was fairly superficial and that perhaps they regard most visitors as posibly just mosquito prey waiting to be bled? Quite honestly I was surprised by the certificates hanging around the lodge and their high booking.com ratings... We had to reduce luggage significantly for this trip to 15kg absolute total each (incl cameras hand baggage etc), for the park charter flights. I reluctantly yielded some weight for shaving gear, only to find that in 4 nights, the staff were unable to to supply (and did not communicate back accordingly) that I would be without a basin plug for the full visit so wasn't able to shave anyway. Water was seldom warm or hot. Common bathroom facilities were not kept clean. All in all disappointing, noting that we are relatively experienced game park travelers.
Review 61:Good gardens and hippo pool
Review 62:- Packaged boxes for lunch should be improved significantly. - WIFI never worked in the rooms and they kept saying "tomorrow" for our long stay... it never happened. For such a big hotel, they should have a decent WIFI installation. Charges for WIFI are tremendously ridiculous. Happy WIFI was complementary for booking.com customers, although, as I said, it never worked decently. - Full board does not include water according to their policy, although I escalated the issue with the general manager and he apologized because booking.com does not specify this additional charge and he covered our waters for all meals. Very nice guy. - Prices for activities are much more expensive than any other agency. We ended up arranging a driver/guide with Twiga Tours: VERY RECOMMENDED.
Review 63:- Chalets are very spacious and nice. Very clean of bugs and mosquito net very well maintained. They even fixed a couple of small holes we reported. - Buffet is quite decent. More options for vegetarians than for meat eaters, but I happened to happily feed myself well all days. - Nice pool - They prepared a nice dinner outside at the pool the last night. The food was at ok level, but the gesture is what counts. They even danced and gave us a good bye cake. Very nice guys... - The hotel has a hippo pool where you an see hippos while you enjoy a beer. Elephant pool was closed for maintenance... the 4 days... although we saw nobody working on it. - Shower was comfortable although hot water takes a couple of minutes - A variety of animals in the garden during the night... even a hippo!! Believe me... there is a hippo that sleeps in the garden and does not attack people... up to date... we could not believe it and guard showed it to us... one of the biggest attractions in the night :) - Location of the hotel is perfect, in the middle of the park. Safari started just after jumping into the jeep.
Review 64:Food was below average and wifi hardly worked as advertised.
Review 65:The hospitality, room and location
Review 66:Food
Review 67:Location
Review 68:No spa, food more tailored for non-Europeans.
Review 69:Location,rooms and pool. We had a safari of a lifetime!
Review 70:the location was amazing, saw almost all major animals in the mara
Review 71:Presidential suite was not ready when we arrived and we got two small rooms instead.
Review 72:Hotel location
Review 73:Having to stand in line for main courses and food choices.
Review 74:Location of lodge in the park
Review 75:Great place really in the wild. Nice decor and the staff very welcoming and helpfull
Review 76:amazing location, rooms and staff service throughout is excellent, food is good but not exceptional.
Review 77:can improve food quality. no hot water for showers.
Review 78:superb location inside the Masai Mara game reserve.
Review 79:The most kindest and helpfull staff I've ever met. Great location, beautiful facilities and a hippo pool!
Review 80:hassle and greed
Review 81:staff attitude
Review 82:Loved every minute there
Review 83:Amazing hotel and location
Review 84:The food was not for a 5 star lodge, rather 2 or 3 stars.
Review 85:We liked very much the location and the staff
Review 86:Lack of childrens facility and very spicy and fatty/oily foods
Review 87:Everything.
Review 88:Nothing it was a great experience.
Review 89:Feeling like I was in a real live david Attenborough documentary!
Review 90:Lodge in the center of Masai Mara. Hippo-pool at the lodge. Friendly staff
Review 91:Cleanliness, Good Hospitality, Helpful staff, good food
Review 92:Perfect for safari. Only for people who love adventures!
Review 93:Loved the nature walkway to see the hippos! Also that we were upgrading without even asking. Food was awesome!
Review 94:The food can be better
Review 95:Great place
Review 96:Food - indian and location
Review 97:The food mainly catered for some tourists with little Kenyan food options
Review 98:Friendly staff and great location
Review 99:Food was very average and no hot water in a morning
Review 100:Good location, pleasant staff
Review 101:Nothing
Review 102:Every thing
Review 103:Majestic resort, wonderful staff, beautiful rooms with inspiring furnishings. Just perfect.
Review 104:The location is not accessible anywhere near Serengeti. The staff charge service charge despite no service being provided. Additional charges are discreetly hidden in bookings. Be careful. Greedy staff. I personally would not book sun Africa hotels ever again.
Review 105:We had wi-fi included but for some reason we could´nt get a pass Word but had to connect to a pay sajt and then the hotel would not charge us for the wifi. When this Connection did´nt work I asked for a pass Word (there was an option for just using pass Words) but the receptionist ´could not help us out. He tried to call the hotel director who was the only one that could approve if we could have a pass Word (cause otherweise any one could get a hold of the pass Words ??!!). Anyway, the receptionist took my i-Phone and typed the pass Word (I was not allowed to - cause the pass Word was a secret). Everything was Ok but later on I wanted to use my i-Pad instead since I run out of battery in my phone. Back to the reception to ask for pass Word. The receptionist tells my that there is only one device that could have wi-fi. I told him that I´m only useing one device at the time but I needed to change cause the phone was on "charge". He kept on saying no until I got very irritated and asked to speak to the manager. Then he called someone and then "printed" the pass Word on my i-Pad (of cause I could´nt do it since the pass Word was a secret). This is such a bad service - wi-fi was included (and now adays on any modern hotel - why don´t you just offer this service to all your guests for free when you have the option!
Review 106:Nice hotel located not to far from gate to Mara. Good food, nice pool and a very nice hippo pond where you can se these fantastic animals very Close. Try to go to the pond around 6 am - wonderful view.
Review 107:Our only issue was that the WiFi was not accessible from our chalet and we had to walk down to the reception to use the internet.
Review 108:Keekorok is a wildlife luxury at an affordable cost. The food served was sumptuous, offering a wide variety of international cuisine. The hospitality demonstrated by the hotel staff was of a high standard. Patrick needs a special mention here for the attitude and care he showed towards us. Overall we had an unforgettable experience which we will cherish close to our hearts. We definitely recommend this resort to anyone thinking about an African Safari.
Review 109:wrong room on your description.
Review 110:The manager was very switched on. I had paid for the highest rate and when I got there , they gave me a room which was not as described in your mail. The manager gave us the correct room, and said that we were upgraded,.
Review 111:The WiFi was expensive
Review 112:All the staff were very friendly, welcoming and easy to talk to. The lodge, rooms and grounds were all maintained to a high standard. The viewing areas (hippo bar and elephant deck) were great for viewing wildlife and sunsets.
Review 113:Very poor quality of food and entertainment. We went for a New Year's Eve break and got little for what we paid. The DJ/music on 31st Decemeber night were most unsuitable for the occasion and took away the magic of transitioning to a new year. On arrival we were not welcomed! The door staff just stared into space. The menu was extremely limited and presentation... I have seen better. This facility would not objectively rate as 5 - star.
Review 114:Good infrastructure - buildings, location and configuration. Staff were very nice - especially those at the reception once we had settled in.
Review 115:The head guy Joseph that is the manager on duty is not a very nice guy.He gave us a really hard time at check in and would not help us at allwith anything that we requested. It is too bad that 1 person can give ahotel such a bad name. Also the game drivers are very nice but they arenot very knowledgable. They are basically there to just drive you andpoint out animals.
Review 116:Most of the staff was very nice except for 1 person. The location isvery good for the Masai Mara.
Review 117:Very small rooms comparing to other lodges and camps. Too many people. Poor food. And the most important for solo travelers and tourists who make reservation himself via booking.com, without help of travel agencies: you have to pay additional obligatory park fee $70 per day per person. (You can not find this information on the lodge webpage). The lodge is trying to get money every minute: they get the payment for transfer from the local airstrip (5 minutes drive) about $30 (!!!).
Review 118:Just design of the lodge and the feeling that it is the first ladge in Masai Mara. Big territory and views.
Review 119:the food was bad. the reception was unprepared and couldn't find one of our reservations. We had to open a new one. In the middle of the savanna and you don't have a room. where are you suppose to stay? The next plane comes the day after and if you're not booked you can't fly either! the staff is not prepared to deal with foreigners their understanding is very poor. For over 400 dolars a night you stay in a high end hotel in Europe or in the Middle East and you're treated like royalty. Instead I had 17 options of indian food for lunch and dinner. Everyday!
Review 120:I like the safari experience but that has nothing to do with the hotel.
Review 121:Loved the buffet.
Review 122:Electricity issues
Review 123:Location, staff, comfort
Review 124:Spa was in a tent. had to shower at pool after treatment, gap under bedroom door allowed insects into room.
Review 125:Hippo pool at the lodge
Review 126:More free water plz
Review 127:Everything was majestic ! Thank you so much to all mgt & staff ( friendly & fun experience )
The Fine Print
