Reviews for Portobello Hotel

Review 1:Decent rooms in good location. However the hospitable staff are the main reason I would recommend this hotel to others. Always happy to help and extended our room to include free breakfast.

Review 2:Bed wasn't that comfortable.

Review 3:Have to say the guy on receiption was top class. Couldn't do enough from helping us with parking to finding my watch which I couldn't find because I was still drunk from the night before.

Review 4:The building is old and I can't say it was perfect and cleanest ever but it was appropriate for the price.

Review 5:The hotel is next to the canal and on a sunny morning it is really nice for a walk. There is. Bar downstairs and parking on street near to hotel is available.

Review 6:Terrible value for money. €199 for one night. Rooms are basic. Bathroom lock was broke. There are stains all over the bathroom walls. Cobwebs very evident.

Review 7:Location was ok

Review 8:On night there was a live band and you could hear it in the room so was a bit noisy

Review 9:Location was perfect and everything suited us for the type of weekend we wanted which was a weekend of drinking

Review 10:The hotel was pretty beat up but beyond that issue, there is a nightclub below it in the bar on the weekends. They were playing incredibly loud dance music until 3am that keep us from sleeping all night. We let the front desk know but the gentleman was less than accommodating to say the least.

Review 11:all the old staff where gone ? Except for the man himself mr S .. !! Top man

Review 12:Staff are friendly food was fab. Great location. Very comfy rooms . Music excellent all the oldies playing . Portobello has been refurbished since I was there and it looks a lot better ..

Review 13:Loud at night with disco techno pop music coming into my room from the bar. Partrons talking on the street until 2:00 a.m. Both of these kept me awake so I move to another hotel.

Review 14:Staff was nice, room was nice.

Review 15:rooms are grubby and old and really need to be renovated. one plug in the room.:( not good at all.

Review 16:good location. brilliant that ye had late bar and nightclub. staff were amazing really kind and helpful.

Review 17:The heat in some rooms, One staff member isn't very polite but overall the rest are great.

Review 18:The canal was lovely to look out on place was spotless. Decoration was very homie and up to date alltogether I loved it.

Review 19:Fantastic stay, no complaints. Staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Location was very good, just a short walk from the centre of the city.

Review 20:At times they did not greet us- even if your busy in such a small space a polite nod or exchange of hello is necessary. Its a pub really not a hotel. - as a result rowdy people kept us up till wee hours, of what we did sleep was good. Centipede in the shower- haven't seen one for years.

Review 21:The staff were polite and amiable. Good at suggesting places in the locality to visit.Breakfast was sufficient it was offered us at a discount and worth it. Bed was comfortable mostly good sleep. We had three double beds for our family of six. Tidy and clean. We stayed in higher quality hotels but for the price the standard was on par with high quality.

Review 22:The lighting in the room was very dark. The bathroom wasn't as clean as I would like personally buy I still had no issues using it!

Review 23:Staff were brilliant, very polite and helpful. Nothing seemed like it would be a problem. Location was perfect, very close to town. Beds were very comfortable.

Review 24:The biggest problem was the noise. There is a pub/disco downstairs. The music blared until after 2am. It was really loud. I needed a good nights sleep as I had an early meeting and I didn't get to sleep till almost 3am due to the noise. This ruined the next day for me. There were also some small things, such as, several walls had splash marks (drink/bodily fluids?) and most of the bulbs in the room were blown. If the place was better taken care of and the music was kept down it would be a good hotel.

Review 25:The staff were very friendly and approachable. The view from the room was nice.

Review 26:the two room suite is very dated, badly configured and furnishings that all need to be replaced - the room probably hasn't changed in any significant way in 20 years .... a very average stay

Review 27:The location is quite good, staff were friendly

Review 28:The showers were a little weak, but over all the cleaning facilities were extremely clean and lovely. My only improvement would be to have more powerful showers but are still useable.

Review 29:The staff were extremely nice and helped up with many things, such as booking transfers, checking in early/checking out late, recommending restaurants, bars and sights and were generally polite and lovely people! As well as this the rooms were so lush, clean and comfortable.

Review 30:Very convenient getting from the Airport.Though we took a taxi from the city centre. The following day I realised the 16 bus we got at the Airport would have taken us directly to the hotel

Review 31:Let customers know there is a nightclub below and this may interfere with their sleep depending on what floor you are on luckily we were not ont he first floor which i should imagine bear the blunt of it.

Review 32:The location is great, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Its close but yet far enough away from the hussle of the city. the room is spacious and clean and we enjoyed our stay. very welcoming!

Review 33:The hotel was very dirty. We found what appeared to be bed bugs andreported it immediately. We were forced to move rooms and there was anoffensive smell in the room. The water was black apparently due to abreakdown in the city and power cut according to the receptionist. Itwas awful. They reduced our bill by half, but to be honest thiswasn't enough. I had to sanitise all the clothes etc....b eforebringing them back home in case of a bed bug cross contamination in myhome. Awful.

Review 34:Staff were great, lovely room and really liked the location - a little out of cbd, but nice spot. Only thing for us was we were there on a Saturday night and the live music from down stairs was right below us and a little noisy. But still really enjoyed our night's stay :)

Review 35:If you don't particularly enjoy Sky TV football on all screens at full volume, and would prefer a relaxing meal then chose the dates of your stay carefully. Combine this with a restaurant full of Japanese tourists in for a meal, and the whole experience can be.....interesting.

Review 36:Location very appropriate for my visit to Dublin. Very accessible and appreciated all facilities being under one roof. Excellent staff in hotel and pub. Quality food, well presented, very good value.

Review 37:staff in bar/ restaurant not very helpful or polite no salad without onion no galic butter for steak no marmalade at breakfast sofa bed for children not very comfortable

Review 38:receptionist helpful and polite

Review 39:The WiFi service was very intermittent throughout the hotel and frequently dropped my Skype calls. Room 210 only had one bar of signal.

Review 40:Great staff & Location

Review 41:The mattress was awful, too fluffy. Our room was right over the Bar and we heard the music till after midnight.

Review 42:Our family room was good enough for party of 6

Review 43:The sofa bed was very bad.it should be replaced with a new one

Review 44:Excellent staff ,Anthony and Valentino both genuinely cared about our experiece while staying in Dublin.

Review 45:one very rude bouncer which wouldn't let us enter even tho we were residents.

Review 46:Friendly staff , nice rooms, good location only a few minutes walk from main night life

Review 47:The lack of vehicle parking was a problem. A lovely lady who I met one day down Charlemont Mall kindly gave me a voucher for one days free parking - which saved us nearly €30 Surely the hotel could provide these vouchers for guests like us travelling from England by car to be with family. The Dublin traffic management system is a nightmare for visitors!

Review 48:Our stay was enjoyable and happy - the staff were a lovely group of people.

Review 49:There was nothing did not like. Everything was 100%

Review 50:The welcome I got so friendly and helpful. I felt at home and would recommend to my friends etc. Thanks so much. Barry

Review 51:There is free wi-fi but it is very slow. There was pretty consistent sewer like smell in the room.

Review 52:The hotel is excellently located in the hip Portobello neighbourhood. The staff is friendly and from our comfortable bedroom on the third floor we could barely hear the noise from the bar downstairs.

Review 53:The only down side was the music late at night for kids but I understand this is to be expected with pub.

Review 54:The two bedroom suite was great especially with the kids staff really helpful.Accomodation excellent no faults.

Review 55:Had a difficult time getting through Dublin traffic, public transport would probably be easier.

Review 56:Nice people, good steaks at the pub downstairs. Secure, nice canal to walk down next to the hotel. Although it didn't have private parking, the parking on the street outside was readily available and free overnight.

Review 57:On the first floor there is s pub. It wasn't a problem for me. But if you can't sleep when it's quite noisy it would be s problem.

Review 58:Nice area around the hotel. Good breakfast.

Review 59:The breakfast was quite poor. The salmon had gone off and had a horrible smell. The scrambled egg came out of a packet. When we checked out we were asked to pay in cash as the card machine had been broken for several days. Surely they should have mentioned this when we checked in.

Review 60:We got a last minute deal to stay in the hotel so it was excellent value for money (bed only). Central location - walking distance from Stephens green.

Review 61:Well, a pub downstairs would not help if you are looking for a place to rest. Also it might not be the best idea if you are looking for something classy

Review 62:Great location. Perfect place if you wanna spend a night out.

Review 63:The room was extremely dated. The carpets throughout the hotel were in disrepair. The beds all sagged towards the middle. They were past their prime.

Review 64:The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The location is excellent. Could not ask for a better combination of the two.

Review 65:I had a very low room. a higher room might have been better. My window overlooked what I would call a "project". Dog was barking all night long. Cigarette smoke from bar-goers could be smelled the room despite closed windows. No AC (that I could find, anyway) warm room forcing me to open the window and let the cigarette smoke in. Music from bar could be heard until 1 or 2AM.

Review 66:Good location, good food at restaurant beneath. Nice people.

Review 67:If I had to comment would be the slightly noisey compressor on the roof adjacent our window. But it is a city centre hotel with limited space and didn't spoil our stay.

Review 68:Was a last mintue booking Fantastic location for our purpose. Very clean hotel with more than helpful and friendly staff. Free parking beside the canal on sunday and evenings. Location by the canal makes for a great spot to relax day and night.

Review 69:I did not have a bad experience, Everything was great but something that some people could comlain about would be the grit on the shower was moldy, and some of the fixing or the repairs they had made was done poorly, but did not effect the service, One thing I did not like was they did not offer room service and food at the bar was not an option, so we needed to order take away to the hotel.

Review 70:Loved everything about the hotel, it was in a nice central location with a bus stop across the street to get into the city center 10 minutes away, Friendly staff and nice modern and clean rooms. I would say it's value for money on the normal occasion! 100%, Just at our stay we paid for bank holiday prices so it was quiet expensive so I f it was normal pricing 100% worth it!

Review 71:We stayed in room 307 at the very top which was fine but the curtains need to be longer and more black out with the sun rising at 4 in the morning.

Review 72:The breakfast was fantastic , dinner was great too. The staff was friendly, it was a good family hotel.

Review 73:The WiFi connection seemed rather slow and the choice of TV channels was very limited.

Review 74:The staff were very helpful on arrival at the hotel and throughout my stay

Review 75:Can't think of anything .

Review 76:Nice view .the food was delish . Great nightlife live music + they even have a nightclub downstairs great music70s &80s .

Review 77:My room was just above the bar so it was quite noisy. But that's nobody's fault. Maybe if the windows were double glazed , it would have been quieter.

Review 78:The location - very central

Review 79:The room I stayed in had only one ceiling light at a poor location, making it the room a little dark. However, there were nice bedside lamps to complement it. There was also a lot of noise from the bar which made it hard for us to sleep during the first night.

Review 80:The staff were nice and friendly. The room as fully equipped and the bathroom was impressive.

Review 81:There was one tile missing from the shower and there could have done with drinking water in the bedroom

Review 82:The gentleman on the reception on checking out was absolutely charming.

Review 83:quite basic , No toiletries, just had some refillable liquid soap. WiFi almost never worked. too much noise either from the nearby nightclub or the bar downstairs at night which did not let us sleep till very late at night

Review 84:Location was good , not a long walk from the city center

Review 85:Not enough power points in room had to pull out TV plug to put charger on as the one next to kettle wouldn't fit because the hair dryer is to low One Lamp didn't work Internet very slow or not at all TV reception very poor Blow dryer didn't work Had to get another kettle as well

Review 86:Meals were huge

Review 87:Not a negative per se. Just no socket beside the bed. I might just be addicted to my phone.

Review 88:The man at check-in, was really chatty and funny. Gave a great 1st impression of hotel. Really liked the selection of biscuits in the room. Nice touch.

Review 89:The window lash on our window was broken and the elevator was not in good working condition, in mater of fact it was out of order the last two days.

Review 90:The location is pretty good, it was excellent to get a free WiFi during the stay there and we thought it was great to have the "Tavern" on the bottom floor, both to have a nice meal or to grab a drink or two.

Review 91:The room was very small, the bed was the smallest I've seen in a hotel, not very comfortable for 2 people. The room looked like it was under renovation. Too expensive per square foot. It's a 2 star, I'd give it 1 star. My pics would tell a better story

Review 92:Location

Review 93:It's not very clear that this hotel also doubles as a nightclub! I appreciate it mentions it in the description but the night club is literally right below the bedrooms so it was hard to sleep. I think this was fairly misleading.

Review 94:The full Irish was really great and the staff serving were very polite. Also very good location.

Review 95:Not very clean, had lots of dust in some places and found some hairs Heating didn't work Window lock was kinda broken so all kinds of noise and smell came Very very noisy... the bar downstairs starts with live music after 10pm and sometimes late after 1am with open doors Cleaning staff does more talking and yelling in the corridors than cleaning WiFi was very bad

Review 96:Nice bathroom Comfortable bed

Review 97:We found the structure thanks to a "last minute offer" onBooking.com: it is really comfortable, near to the city centre and witha kind and polite staff!

Review 98:Portobello is an hotel in a very nice and quiet area of south Dublin. The staff is discreet and they let guests in absolute tranquility. Also recommended for the Portobello pub on the first floor.

Review 99:Parking is on the street need to constantly replace tickets, not great for mid week but if you are going for the weekend it is free after 6 on Friday till Monday morning.

Review 100:Loved the room overlooking the canal. It was nice that the room had a comfortable couch added bonus. Staff were very pleasant.

Review 101:Our room was just above the bar so the music kept us awake till about 3am apart from that it was great

Review 102:The room was spacious and perfect for us (5) people

Review 103:they took my money under false pretences..there is NO sleep to be had when they run their nite club for 11 people!! the noise was horrendous until 3am..no sound proofing at all! if you stay here you better want loud music through the night.

Review 104:the staff were approachable and friendly

Review 105:We said to the staff we had to get up at 4am to take a plane and at 11pm a band started in a pub just under the hotel. It was so noisy till 2.30am so we couldn't sleep anything. It seemed like the band was in our room and staff didn't say anything... very bad.

Review 106:Views

Review 107:Room located over a night club very noisy when club closes. Rooms need a little t.l.c. (i.e.- Window was rotted and difficult to open, mattress needed updating)

Review 108:Hotel location was good. Building was vintage and rustic with old world charm.

Review 109:Great location in walking distance to the city centre, very well maintained. Very friendly stuff. Spacious room! Inhouse restaurant. We´ll come back! Some details might look not so new (like the carpets) but, on the other hand, there are other things - like these fabulous lined alcantara curtains, that don´t let any light through or the beautiful marble bathroom with tub - that are quite unusual and prove the professional style of the place. Convincing!

Review 110:The only thing we could fault was that there wasn't much of a choice on the breakfast menu and a few items seemed a bit too over fried but over all it was great.

Review 111:Myself and my boyfriend were very pleasantly surprised by our recent stay in the Portabello. The rooms were so comfy and we loved the decor, we were situated in a great spot for food, nightlife and a lovely walk along the canal. To top it all off the staff were lovely and friendly too!

Review 112:no issues with anything during my stay

Review 113:staff were very helpful...lifts to rooms; didnt have to use stairs; room was very clean & nicely decorated; no noise disturbance during the night. Would reccomend it to others and would stay there again myself

Review 114:Stayed in 2bedroom suite. The room was cold even with one heater in the sitting room and one in the bedroom.

Review 115:Near bus stop. Many halal restaurants and grocery store is just teo minutes walk.

Review 116:extra charge for breakfast 10 euro taken from my account before i checked in a companion walked in and got it for 49 euro including breakfast

Review 117:very comfortable

Review 118:The only thing that I could say in this section was that I required some colour printing and the printer was out of colour ink. I was advised of this by a staff member which he apologised for. No ones fault just bad timing! Excellent service otherwise

Review 119:Staff were excellent. Very helpful and friendly. Very accommodating during my short stay. Great location too!

Review 120:Only minor fault is the TV dosnt have a range of channels, e.g. mainly irish channels only.

Review 121:Enjoyed my stay in this hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful, room was good and clean, breakfast good and the location of the hotel is excellent - within walking distance of restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and about 5 to 10 min walk from Grafton Street. Also located in a nice area in Dublin city.

Review 122:Cant say I disliked anything -maybe having to gain access via doorbell system at night was a bit offputting but against that one felt that priority was ginven to security .

Review 123:I particularly the warmth and friendliness of staff.there was a homely feeling while i satayed there.

Review 124:The only slight negative we had was the limitation of the menu. However, what was on offer was delicious and good value.

Review 125:Firstly, the staff were great. Very helpful and welcoming. Secondly, our room was excellent, large, clean with most facilities one could wish for. Thirdly, the location was perfect, in our case, but it should also be for anyone who is heading into the centre of Dublin. We will stay here again.

Review 126:See also what I have written in what I liked box. I thought the hotel was very seedy and needed a thorough overhaul. Off white paint and a good clean and new carpets spring to mind. The fact that there is a very loud disco in the hotel is not a plus factor and should be more clearly stated.

Review 127:I was travelling on my own and therefore my double room which I had booked was very good for a single traveller. However, it would have been awful if my husband had been there too as there was little room to move around the bed. The window looked onto the air conditioning unit - but for me on my own, it was fine but expensive.

Review 128:1) We reserved a room advertised as sleeping five. It did, in a purely technical sense. Two of sleeping spaces were on a sofa bed which, while possibly useful for extracting confessions from prisoners of the Inquisition, was not a "bed" in the ordinary sense. 2) There is a large pub on the ground floor - quite a nice pub, by the way - but it features very loud music, particularly on weekend nights, running until the wee hours. If you can sleep through thumping vibrations of a heavy base track and occasional outbreaks of high-pitched crowd noise, fine. If you are at all sensitive to noise, don't stay here. 3) If you have a car, you should recognize that the hotel has no associated parking. You have to park on the street and arrange to feed the meter... and Dublin charges Euro 2.40/hr to park in daylight hours. The desk staff will feed the meter for you if you can park on the same block and leave them the money. But still...

Review 129:1) The location is good in the sense that you are about a 10-15 walk from all of the tourist and shopping spots in central Dublin. 2) The pub on the ground floor is actually quite nice (but see noise problem). Not a cozy neighborhood pub nice, but a larger here's-where-locals-over-30-come-to-meet-and-mingle nice. It has decent pub food and serves a good breakfast. Early in the evening, a good place to watch the Irish sport of your choice and have a pint. Later, it's a party. 3) By Dublin standards, the rates are reasonable.

Review 130:Didn't like the lack of outlets in the room. There was only one outlet in the whole room that we could use to charge our electronics. This was a little inconvenient.

Review 131:The location is very good. We walked everywhere we wanted to go from local sightseeing to meeting tour buses for coach tours. The room was clean, bed comfy and room amenities were great (kettle, tea, coffee, cookies). The staff ranged from good to excellent.

Review 132:Brekkie was basic when having just cereal not much choice, cereal, yoghurt juice coffee/tea toast. Could have had hot breakfast but I don't like that. In the attic so only had skylights. Shower was over the bath and appeared really close to the wall. Some chips in the bath

Review 133:It was easy to get to 20 min walk from Liffey River. 5 min walk to bus stop, 10 min walk to Green LUAS. Great Music in the bar. We were able to check in after midnight as had encountered travel problems. Bathroom had an opening window looking over the roof tops. (memories of Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins). Main meal was ok loved the high bar benches and tables.

Review 134:Advertised as a family room, but was directly over the nightclub so the bass in the music boomed til 3.30am... Terrible night (lack of sleep) before a long haul flight the following day. It was only by miracle the kids slept!

Review 135:Room had character and good to have sep room for our 3 young children, but still within our room.

Review 136:I only had one request for the hotel and that was one double bed which I specified when booking - I ended up getting two twin beds pushed together which was disappointing as it was my only request and the least I was expecting for €100.

Review 137:The staff at reception were very pleasant and helpful! WIFI was good. Clean room and decent TV. Basic room but good value.

Review 138:A bit far to walk to centre of city, pub food just okay

Review 139:Friendly and helpful staff, 24 hour reception, secure building, comfy beds, large room, pub downstairs was nice
