Reviews for The Marine

Review 1:This is my second stay here and can't wait for my third! Great friendly staff, those super comfy beds and bedding, super breakfasts, and of course 'THE SUNROOM' with that awesome view. Love it!

Review 2:Thurso is a quaint little spot - but everything closes by 5pm so not much to do in the area after hours.... this is no fault of Rich & Karen; just a forewarning of the reality of a small town.

Review 3:Listening to the waves from our room was spectacular... While I appreciate a king bed, there is little room left for moving about the room. Having access to the solarium though was so clever... really made the place feel like home.

Review 4:Very welcoming reception by the proprietor. All the facilities were top quality and well maintained. No expense spared in providing guests with a memorable stay

Review 5:The accommodation was superb It was a very pleasant 3 night stay . Karen and Ritchie are very welcoming and the breakfasts in a beautiful dining room was a joy. Very relaxing setting with a gorgeous view over the sea.

Review 6:Everything was first class, from room facilities with the little extras like small cakes, to the comfortable beds, quality breakfasts and the views from the conservatory.

Review 7:nothing - all great

Review 8:Superb food, boutique hotel styling, great fit-out and amazing value for money with great sea views and lovely staff. all round winner and will certainly go back again

Review 9:Not the easiest place for a man to shave with an electric shaver, as there was no electric shaver socket in the bathroom, and lighting over the mirror over the wash basin was poor. Bars of soap are provided, which was good, but no container to put them in was provided. Handles to help people in and out of the bath would be helpful. Relatively expensive for a B&B, but you do get good accommodation.

Review 10:Very clean and comfortable accommodation. Great location overlooking the sea. Good selection at breakfast, and good food. Generally excellent accommodation.

Review 11:The warm welcome with a glass of the local tipple was just what we needed after our long drive. The view from the balcony over to Orkney was spectacular. The Marine provided us with a comfortable stay for our weekend away.

Review 12:A common theme with me... too short a stay!

Review 13:Everything! Especially the understanding when a guest has travelled for over 30hrs from Land End including diversions due to snow blocked roads & only 1hrs sleep in total... & arrives a little late :/ The sleep & full Scottish breakfast made it all worth while :) Thank you

Review 14:Loved the huge fluffy towels and soft bed linen Scenery spectacular. Vegetarian breakfast.. delicious Staff very friendless and extremely helpful

Review 15:Wish there was an outlet in bathroom for hair dryer, but this appears to be a UK design issue since other hotels we stayed at had same.

Review 16:Had room facing ocean. Loved the ocean wave sounds to go to sleep. Karen was very helpful. Breakfast was very good. Would like to go back and stay longer.

Review 17:Nothing other than some minor noise from adjoining room when guest was using facilities, coupled with a loss of water power when showers were in use simultaneously in both rooms. I should add that this was an annexe and not the main building.

Review 18:Nice room and facilities, everything catered for including very comfortable bed and fluffy towels. Good breakfast personally prepared. Lovely owner and family who couldn't do enough for you. Pleasant view over the Pentland Firth.

Review 19:There weren''t many dining choices nearby. We gave two a try after people in town recommended them, but our tastes differed.

Review 20:The room we had was in the annex. It was spacious, overlooked the ocean, and was exceptionally comfortable. The owner was so generous and gracious, we had a wonderful stay. Breakfasts were outstanding as well. Plenty of parking, perfect jumping off point for exploring the northeast coast, catching a ferry to the Orkneys or an easy day's drive to Durness, (easy if you aren't still white knuckling on the single lane roads).

Review 21:Two fairly minor quibbles: My companion would have preferred a bath, but the wet room was excellent. I'm 6'2" and found the single, together with the quilt, in the twin room small. Not as big as in the chain hotels, but probably a standard size I guess.

Review 22:Karen was a friendly host and although we broke some of the rules, remained so throughout. Breakfast was superb, especially the smoked haddock with poached eggs. Very clean, modern and tasteful. Terrific views from the breakfast lounge. Highly recommended.

Review 23:A bit difficult to locate but worth the effort.

Review 24:Comfortable room. Pleasant small conservatory with fabulous view. Very pleasant and helpful owner and staff. Imaginative breakfast.

Review 25:Marvellous host, Karen went out of her way to be helpful. Excellent location in Thurso. Lovely breakfasts. Nice large bedroom and lovely bathroom. Very high standard of cleanliness

Review 67:Great location. Quiet clean comfortable and friendly.

Review 68:Not much in thurso for an evening and our room was right next to the front door which proved rather noisy

Review 69:Lovely views on the front at thurso and from small guest lounge, very clean room

Review 70:We booked this 2 night stay in 2013 on booking.com, for a stay in June 2014. It stated that check in was from 3pm and a credit card was required to secure the booking. We sent a text to the owner on the day of arrival stating that we would arrive between 3 and 4pm. We received a reply that check in was not available until 4pm. But as she was playing golf, she would leave keys in a key safe at one of the doors of the building. We think she should have been there to greet guests. Once there, we found that you can only pay for the room with cash. We actually had money on our credit card to pay for this stay. This was not mentioned on the website in 2013. But having looked after the event, this has been stated cash only. Also we had to state a time we wanted breakfast. At other establishments we have stayed at, breakfast is flexible. We asked for 8.30 - ISH......but that was frowned upon! She wanted a precise time. The place needs to be run for guests needs not the owners! Finally, as I was packing my car and not yet ready to leave, the owner saw me and gave me my bill before I was ready to go! This is a really nice place but we feel that the owner should put her guests needs first as it spoilt it for us.

Review 71:Room very comfortable and stylish. Very good shower room.

Review 72:Location excellent for exploring the top coast of Scotland as well as the Orkney islands only 20mins from John O 'Groats. Lovely rooms with sea views. Excellent breakfast!

Review 73:Loved everything, great location, great food, beautiful rooms and Karen was an excellent host she just treats you like a friend. Highly recommend to anyone.

Review 74:The hospitality of the owner was fantastic. Location was an ideal base for exploring. Loved the sun room watching the waves every morning & night.

Review 75:a very comfortable room with double bed and a large en-suite facility. I had to pay cash and unfortunately underpaid by £10 as I forgot the room rate! Excellent breakfast and a sitting room overlooking the bay so a very good experience all round!

Review 76:There was nothing I didn't like.

Review 77:The rooms were amazing, the views and the sound of the sea. Very friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. The entire place was spotlessly clean.

Review 78:Was expecting 'hotel' rfather than B&B. Bit pricey for a B&B despite the good quality.

Review 79:Rooms, comfort, friendliness, location, sea views

Review 80:Nothing to complain about... except perhaps that they couldn't magically turn the aurora borealis on for us :P

Review 81:Without wanting to sound dramatic, we liked everything about our stay. A quiet, modern, clean and spacious room with a sea view; convenient location and a fantastic breakfast with lots of choice. Karen gave us a great welcome with a dram and homemade shortbread, and Richie gave us advice for local spots for night walks/stargazing—even going as far as giving us headlamps and checking our progress from the window that we hadn't fallen off any cliffs. The price was fantastic for the stay, and we were allowed to leave without actually having paid yet, as I'd forgotten to lift enough cash to allow us to pay for the room and catch the bus in time—much appreciated.

Review 82:Eating out in winter in Thurso on a sunday night ,only 1 place to eat , the Y-not , good food but not much ambiance.

Review 83:Fantastic comfortable well decorated room , the guest house was very clean . Beautiful views overlooking the sea. Breakfast was excellent. Very good reception with a drink! Enjoyed watching the surfer's.

Review 84:Newly done, so no hint of mustiness. Rooms on the ground floor, for those with heavy luggage. 'Wee dram' and shortbread in front of windows overlooking the beach

Review 85:Nil.

Review 86:A designer B and B ( with the ability to store 2 bikes) in the unlikely setting of Thurso. Karen was very welcoming and Richie cooked an excellent evening meal ( and breakfast). We would not consider staying anywhere else if we return to the area.

Review 87:As a business traveller it was nice to be asked what time I would like to have breakfast. The rooms are lovely and breakfast was excellent. I stay away a couple of nights a week and this is one of the most enjoyable stays I have had all year, nothing was to much trouble. I have already booked a further two nights in January...

Review 88:Fantastic rooms with a friendly service! Best cooked breakfast my husband has ever had!! Even given a dram on arrival which was a lovely touch!

Review 89:The location was right on the bay with great views from the lounge area off the dining room. Rooms were beautifully furnished, charming, and the Shauna who was substituting for the owner was Great!!! Complimentary Old Pultney scotch and biscuits on arrival! So relaxung,

Review 90:What can I say Amazing!! Should be 5 star accommodation. Our bed was to die for so comfortable I had a job to get out of bed. The bathroom beautiful. The amazing breakfasts and dinningroom, the lounge to sit overlooking the ocean, the accommodation just superb!

Review 91:Everything, lovely room, modern ,new, lovely bathroom, fantastic breakfast, wonderful, helpful, friendly hosts. Lovely view from enclosed deck. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Review 93:nothing!

Review 94:EVERYTHING! from the moment I arrived and was welcomed so warmly by karen! She couldnt have done more to provide me with a very special holiday break, in a wonderfully comfortable and elegant home. I simply couldnt say enough about the Marine.

Review 95:My 5 night stay was 5 star. My room was spotless and the bed was the most comfortable I have EVER slept in. The marine has the most wonderful setting with a superb view across thurso shore to scrabster harbour, Holborn head, Orkneys and dunned head. Thanks Karen & Richie for your helpfulness and the lovely breakfasts, my great start to perfect days. I will be visiting you again.

Review 96:This is the best B & B I have stayed at. Having looked around I preferred it to the local hotels. The owners go out of their way to make your stay a pleasure. Don't miss the superb locally sourced evening meals. Followed by a relaxing sit in the sun lounge overlooking the beach, available to guests all day. If I was within 50 miles of this place I would go out of my way to stay there again. A great experience.

Review 97:We loved the warm ambience and hospitality, the delicious and well presented food, the quality and style of the furnishings combined with beautiful sea views in an excellent location.

Review 98:Wonderful small, luxury bed and breakfast. Beautifully and expensively furnished and equipped. Warm and helpful welcome from proprietors. Attractive sea-edge surroundings; quiet, but close to town centre.

Review 99:Friendly owners - provided a very personal service. Little extras were appreciated- a wee dram and homemade shortcake, fresh milk for tea/ coffee in room. Tastefully decorated and comfortable room. Spotlessly clean bathroom. Excellent breakfast. Would highly recommend.

Review 100:Not being able to complain about anything at all!

Review 101:The owners of this excellent property have thought about everything we can think of to make the stay perfect.

Review 102:Exceptional good facility with top of the range decor, very friendly owner. Breakfast was very good and set us up for the day. Sea views were amazing. I wouldn't have any hesitation recommended The Marine

Review 103:Lovely friendly hosts obviously enjoy welcoming guests to their newly converted/refurbished guesthouse. Stunning views, beautifully appointed rooms, excellent dinner ( with locally caught shellfish) and breakfast. Fluffy bathrobes and super comfortable beds made this stand out above other establishments.

Review 104:Our stay was too short!

Review 105:This B&B exceeded our expectations. The view is stunning, the rooms luxurious and the host was extremely welcoming and accommodating. Beats the standards set by many of the best hotels.
