Review 1：The only thing that we were put off by at the Rethymno Mare Royal Hotel was the area by our room. It was a huge swath of bare asphalt with a few pots of geraniums. They should add more plants and some comfortable chairs and tables. The rest of the hotel grounds are very pretty with flowering plants everywhere. We really liked the place with the colorfully painted rocks.

Review 2：When we checked in we were given welcome drinks and our bags were whisked up to our room. The triple room was very spacious and cozy. Each bedroom came with its own flat screen TV. The decor seemed a bit dated but was clean and cheerful.The bathroom was furnished with shampoo, shower gel and sumptuous bathrobes, disposable slippers and ball caps for the beach. We really appreciated the hats as one of our party did not bring a hat. They also gave us a little sewing kit as well as a wonderful bottle of Cretan wine and a small basket of fruit. Our sea view was somewhat hampered by the roof of the restaurant. Off to the side we could see a yard with five goats and did enjoy watching their antics for a change of pace.What really distinguishes this hotel is the food which is the best of any place we have ever stayed. We admire the fact that they did not try to cater to the tastes of various foreign tourists but instead served real Greek food with fresh ingredients. If you are a foodie you will appreciate the cuisine at this hotel. Hat is off to the chef.Both the breakfast and dinner were astonishingly good. They always served fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning which I loved. The selection of food was not as big as what you find at the mega resorts but the quality, taste and presentation was outstanding. The hotel is four star but the food is five star.Our server was usually Denisa and she was a lovely person, very efficient and service oriented. At this hotel you are waited upon and although you help yourself to their delicious buffet, the coffee and wines are served at the table. Also they light little lamps when the sun goes down to create a romantic ambiance.The hotel lobby and surrounds are decorated with local art. We really loved the whimsical naive folk art. It was unusual to find such interesting and original art in a hotel.Also this hotel had by far the best entertainment.
