Reviews for The Standard Inn

Review 1:There was one member of staff that wasn't overly keen to help or go out of his way to provide a great service. All other staff were great though and did go out of their way to help. No parking. Fireplace in Hythe is for show only.

Review 2:Really cute pub with nicely renovated rooms. We stayed in Hythe which was massive. Nice food and overall service.

Review 3:No parking / pull in area nearby Very early morning cleaning / bottle emptying downstairs

Review 4:Location Style / decor of bedroom Lovely pub / restaurant downstairs Fab breakfast

Review 5:No negative comments

Review 6:Really friendly Pub in the middle of Rye. We stayed in room called "Hythe" - Good size and with a view over The Mint. Great staff who were extremely helpful

Review 7:As it was above a pub that stayed open late it was rather noisey til late . However ear plugs were supplied it still remained noisy throughout the night .

Review 8:The location and the staff and the food were all great

Review 9:Because the rooms are above the bar it is quite noisy until quite late at night, this is mentioned on the website to their credit. We are sound sleepers so it didn't bother us but may not be suitable for light sleepers.

Review 10:We stayed at the standard with our 3.5 yr old for the night of the Rye Bonfire. The weather was horrible so we were thrilled to find out we could watch the procession from the window. As it came right past the hotel. The room, facilities and staff were lovely we also had an evening meal at the standard which was very good too. We liked it so much we discussed booking the same room for the bonfire next year!

Review 11:Yes, it's a noisy before midnight, but you're in a pub, so what do you expect?! If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! It's a bit pricey when we compared it to other places in Rye, but hard to fault all the same.

Review 12:Quirky, cosy, comfortable and great food. All the staff are friendly and the owner/manager very helpful.

Review 13:Our room was very noisy as above the pub in an old building with little insulation. Went to get a good nights sleep while the grandparents looked after a toddler, instead had less sleep due to noise! Also no shower, only a bath.

Review 14:Lovely lively pub, nice decor and great breakfast

Review 15:Our bedroom was directly above the incredibly busy pub so sleep before 12.30am was impossible.

Review 16:Great central location, lovely big clean stylish bedroom, extremely comfy bed. Friendly staff. The food (evening and breakfast) was delicious and the pub has a great atmosphere.

Review 17:As the pub is small and quaint and we were staying with our small baby, we had to fold up the pram when we walked into the pub and up to our room. This doesn't sound like a big deal but when you rely on your baby to sleep in the pram while you have a meal and quiet drink, this prooved a challenge. However, this did not hinder our experience!

Review 18:Charming quaint little pub in the heart of the village. Lovely spacious rooms above; clean and very comfortable.

Review 19:Communal toilets outside and not very clean late evening, room very nice but very small small and cramped

Review 20:Great central location, excellent atmosphere and great breakfast

Review 21:Liked everything

Review 22:The bar at the Standard Inn was lovely, log fire, good food, lovely wines and beers, traditional pub atmosphere with a contemporary twist Room where we stayed very clean, comfortable bed, good shower, high quality bed linen and towels. Good location in the pretty cobbled streets of Rye

Review 23:The pub should have given us a map to find the parking area. It was murder to find!!

Review 24:Our room was very comfortable and fun. We liked the bath in the room.

Review 25:Bathroom rather lacking. Heated towel rail did not work. Difficult to get in and out of the bath. No shelving above sink.

Review 26:Comfortable bed. Very good food. Delightful staff.

Review 27:Compared to some of the other places in Rye I thought it was a little too overpriced.

Review 28:The quirkyness of the place. Bar great good real ales & food good. One of the best cooked breakfasts that I have had.

Review 29:Stair carpet and bedroom carpets need cleaning. More serviceable carpet needed.

Review 30:Friendly staff, good food. Busy and friendly pub. Breakfasts excellent.

Review 31:No mirror in the room to use the hairdryer, only mirror in bathroom and there were no sockets there. No waste paper bin in bedroom for used tea bags etc, had to take them into the bathroom.

Review 32:Central location was ideal. Very friendly staff. Great value for money.

Review 33:Just for the sake of being very particular, Dover suite would not be suitable for someone who can not climb steep stairs. No mirror in the bedroom (its in the bathroom) and no proper shower. It's a bath with shower attachment.

Review 34:Great pub, good food, very friendly staff, great location, lovely room.

Review 35:No parking but that is to be expected in a historic centre and long term parking cheap. Can pull up outside to unload

Review 36:Lovely pub in centre of Rye. Super owners and staff. Great food and location

Review 37:No Parking at or very near to the Hotel, but that is the norm in Rye, the easiest place to park for an over night stay is at the train station and pay for 2 days parking @ £2:70 per day.

Review 38:Nice Room with plenty of space. Very Old Worldy.

Review 39:There is noise from the street outside at closing time so maybe not the best place if you're planning an early night.

Review 40:A great location in the centre of Rye, a large comfortable room, and great beer in the buzzing pub downstairs. Breakfast was generous with top quality ingredients, and service was friendly.

Review 41:Not being able to book a table even though I was a guest. I think this should be an option for guests only.

Review 42:They were very accommodating and dealt with my egg allergy in an attentive way

Review 43:We'd chosen this inn specifically because it served meals on a Monday night. Disappointed to be told at 7.30 pm that the kitchen had had to close unexpectedly, very little effort made to help find somewhere to eat - the first place offered was booked until 8.45, the 2nd closed. We had travelled quite a long way and walking round Rye late evening in the wind and rain wasn't quite what we had in mind.

Review 44:Nice room and bar area very atmospheric. Great location.

Review 45:Superb food, best Sunday roast ever. Bar snacks excellent & good variety. A warm & welcoming atmosphere & friendly attentive staff, looking forward to returning in December?

Review 46:Only complaint , would have liked a mirror in bedroom for drying my hair

Review 47:Absolutely wonderful ambiance at the Standard , very comfortable bed and great location

Review 48:Nothing we didn't like. It's a lovely place.

Review 49:Excellent location, picturesque building, friendly bar and delicious breakfast. Very helpful staff. Overall a great place for a short break.

Review 50:You couldn't park at the Standard so we had to leave the car in a public car park over night, it was only £1.50 for 24 hours, so quite cheep but not so convenient, although I must add most hotels and B&Bs in Rye do not offer parking.

Review 51:Very quaint old building, the room had character. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 52:The breakfast was rather overcooked - but then we were the last ones down in the morning. Also, my husband found it very noisy with the pub directly underneath our room, but I fell asleep easily. They do provide earplugs if you want. Also, we were somewhat surprised that there really was no shower (or shower attachment) although we enjoyed the bath in the room itself.

Review 53:Wonderful quirky room full of 15th century character. Very comfortable bed. Lots of space and nice touches. I loved the flowery ceramic kettle and the generous-sized mugs, rather than small cups, for tea.

Review 54:Earplugs were provided, but the room we stayed in was very noisy in the evening as it was directly above the bar (Sandwich - The rooms are all named after southern costal towns)

Review 55:Comfortable beds and great breakfast

Review 56:Car park a short distance away - had to put money on meter early next morning. Room only had shower not a bath. Breakfast was muesli orange juice tea/coffee and a cooked breakfast.limited choice of cereals no croissants etc or fruit.but What we had was lovely.

Review 57:Very quaint but modern comfort - staff very ameniable

Review 58:Only negative is it is a very old building so you can hear the noise from the pub until closing and staff setting up for breakfast in the morning. However ear plugs were provided in the room and did the job! Definitely not something that put us off!

Review 59:Fantastic B&B! Perfect location to explore Rye! Staff were very friendly and happy to chat to us over the bar, giving us hints and tips for the local area! Bonus having the pub downstairs to enjoy a beer and grub after a day sightseeing! Amazing breakfast (and dinner in fact), room was lovely and clean, comfy bed. We will be back!

Review 60:Quirky, authentic room, although there is just a bath with a shower attachment (it is a lovely bath though!) Staff were helpful and attentive and the breakfast was perfectly cooked! Liked the provision of ear plugs as there is a bit of noise from the pub below but quite by 12.30.

Review 61:We wanted to stay another night but they were fully booked.

Review 62:EVERYTHING but especially the staff. Really pet friendly, fantastic food and location. We can't wait to go back a real little gem.

Review 63:The bed itself was pretty poor, mattress was away too soft! Also duvet was too thick. Minor complaints really but still!

Review 64:Amazing old pub, great atmosphere, lovely staff

Review 65:You're staying about a busy and popular pub so noise is an issue. Ask for top floor or back of house bedroom to avoid this

Review 66:Beautifully done up with enormous attention to detail. Seriously good breakfast. Terrific staff.

Review 67:The room was great but right over the main bar with noise untill 0.45 inthe morning so poor sleap although they know that as they supply stupidlittle foam ear plugs breakfast was limited

Review 68:There was a certain amount of noise but you expect that in a pub. There was no hairdryer in room, and one didn't appear when asked for.

Review 69:The room was well appointed and clean. The staff were all very friendly.

Review 70:Being picky, good to have tea and coffee in room, but could have done with milk. And could have done with a bin in room for rubbish. Rooms and beds on small side, but that's the nature of the building. Some noise from pub, also only to be expected.

Review 71:Very attractive ancient building, sympathetically renovated, good central location, excellent breakfast, good advice on cheap parking from helpful staff.

Review 72:Had a wonderful stay. Staff were superb. Bedroom quirky, but was 500 years old! Breakfast wonderful. The owner is such a nice guy, I left feeling I had made a friend. Do eat there too, as the food is top notch.

Review 73:Our room was tiny but that's inevitable in that sort of quaint town centre property. Clear advance directions about dropping off luggage would be useful because of Rye's charming one way system.

Review 74:Oozing with character, perfect spot for exploring Rye, good food and relaxed atmosphere.

Review 75:We were given the room in the eaves of the building which is much more old fashioned than the other rooms. Still a very comfortable bed, but this room has no shower, only a bath.

Review 76:Amazing location, comfortable bed, and a huge full English breakfast in the morning!

Review 77:Room was a little noisy from pub clientele, but it is a pub and it abated at a reasonable hour.

Review 78:Good location, staff friendly and very helpful. Room was lovely.

Review 79:Breakfast was a little basic - full English or cereal and rather noisy at night in the summer but earplugs are supplied!

Review 80:Lively young atmosphere with good gastro pub style food

Review 81:Beautiful building in a great location, right in the centre of the town. We had a delicious dinner there too. The standard room was compact but very pretty and well presented with a comfortable bed and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 82:It didn't bother us but many of the rooms are above the pub-if you want quiet go for Dover

Review 83:Breakfast- in the morning you'll get a lovely breakfast served in the sun drenched front room of the pub. Only 5 rooms all are individually decorated and nice.

Review 84:It was very noisy on Saturday night as they have a license until 12 midnight. They do provide ear plugs though. We also had no milk on our tea tray and no biscuits !

Review 85:We loved the authentic feeling of an old inn. Walking through the pub to go to bed and the home from home feeling. The food is very good quality and unpretentious.

Review 86:- The attic room was perhaps large in floor area, but due to the sloped cealing, it felt small and also resulted in showering when sitting in the bath. We also felt that the bed was smaller than the beds of the large rooms on the first floor. - We were promised a travel cod for the baby, but the staff was unable to put it up. - Loud seagulls at night.

Review 87:- Location in center of Rye was great - General atmosphere of pub area was very good, many diners and people coming for a drink without making it loud or bar like.

Review 88:Spur of the moment one night stay. Great place with location in the High St. Polite and courteous staff and lovely food served in the bar. Room was quirky and lovely. Great all rounder.

Review 89:Limited choice on breakfast, but very good. Dinner was excellent cooked, but offered no options suitable for teenager children.

Review 90:Rooms and all it's details are perfect. Location within Rye could not be better. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 91:Parking in town is a little tricky. I think I'll do a bit more research on good places to park in Rye next time.

Review 92:Lovely bedroom, bags of character. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Great location in the heart of town. Just the right kind of place to find yourself after 3 and half hours driving in a car!

Review 93:Very noisy, to be expected as directly over the Pub. En-suite toilet was incredibly small, even for a small person there was hardly room to pull up you trousers!

Review 94:Interior decor of the room and Pub is very good

Review 95:Nothing to report.

Review 96:Lovely inn in a historic building, lovingly restored by the enthusiastic owners who could not have been friendlier. The comfortable bedrooms are above the pub. Warm and friendly atmosphere. Parking is easy - 5 minutes away in the station car park.

Review 97:Only one small complaint no mirror in bedroom, bathroom lovely but bit dark.

Review 98:Lovely B & B above a lovely Bar, facilities were great, staff excellent and the food was fast class.

Review 99:We were woken up by the fire alarm at 5.45 - electrical fault in extractor fan. Could have happened in any place but the standard handled it really well. Breakfast arranged at a neighbouring hotel (lovely) and bill written off. Now that's customer care !

Review 100:it was astonishingly noisy until past 12.00 pm and the small alley next to the inn encouraged night long activities.

Review 101:Lovely old building, small number of rooms/ other guests. Superbly comfortable bed and nice mod facilities

Review 102:Some noise intrusion from the bar but exactly what one would expect in booking a room in a pub. Apparently there are other rooms not immediately above the bar.

Review 103:Delightful and spacious room. Very comfortable. Friendly staff.

Review 104:Lovely old pub full of charm! Gorgeous rooms, loved the earplugs! After 3 weeks travelling Europe, only the 2nd hotel to offer tea coffee making facilities in room. Great pub food, and husband loved the choice of beers.

Review 105:The room was particularly noisy which didn't both us but if you want to sleep before half midnight you won't be able to! Although the staff helped us out there weren't any proper bag storage facilities.

Review 106:Breakfast and the room facilities were great. Very nice decor etc.

Review 107:Given the size of the room and armchair would have been nice!

Review 108:Wonderful Room [Hythe] - wooden beams; very comfortable bed; great shower; excellent toiletries; good TV [with Freeview[; good cooked breakfast [but my wife would have liked some fruit]; We ate there both nights of a two night stay because food (& beer) was so good as was service,

Review 109:We had the lamb and catch of the day, cod, which were truly superb dishes. The owners Raj and Tim were excellent hosts and have carried out an impressive refurbishment of the building and have ensured a great atmosphere and a popular destination for locals and visitors. We will return.

Review 110:Well, the duvet was too hot for the time of year, and no top sheet so nothing to be done except flap. Seating could be much better and better positioned.

Review 111:Location, spacious bedroom, relaxed bar etc area downstairs. Tim very helpful in finding out bus times etc.

Review 112:Small room extremely overpriced. Lack of room amenities, no wastebasket. The narrow staircase leading to the rooms was very dark, with the light coming on as you reached the top. As we came down at our appointed time for breakfast, they were mopping the floor. The bar was laid out with a pitcher of orange juice and a pitcher of milk and six small boxes of mueslis . When my husband asked for cornflakes, one of the owners said that they didn't have cornflakes. My husband then asked for scrambled eggs with cheese, and the owner replied that they didn't do cheese for breakfast.

Review 113:Location The wait staff was friendly.

Review 114:Room overlooked an alleyway that was used by early morning revellers keeping us awake until 3am. Given the location its understandable that there was no parking available but alternatives were not close by and you couldn't stop outside to unload bags.

Review 115:Breakfast was hearty fresh ingredients and very tasty. Hobbit like rooms, quirky with charming old beams and decor. Staff were warm, welcoming and friendly.

Review 116:The accommodation is above the pub so it can get loud until midnight but as we were out for a wedding, it didn't bother us a single bit...

Review 117:Very well located, full of character and beautifully decorated. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very delicious as only good quality food was served.

Review 118:Lovely toiletries but no soap to wash hands. Could have done with bin for used cotton wool and other bits of rubbish instead of having to take home. No tea in room just coffee. Only niggley bits. So overall, just lacking in attention to detail.

Review 119:Quirky building. Excellent shower. Comfy bed.

Review 120:I emailed to tell them it was our wedding anniversary but this was not acknowledged in any way Lack of welcome from the manager and staff Noisy at night and early morning

Review 121:Lovely room The most comfortable bed ever Great free toiletries Excellent food - dinner and breakfast 10/10 Perfect location in the centre of town

Review 122:There is an alley way next to the pub (running under our room window) and people were noisy coming home but ear plugs are provided in the room!

Review 123:Great location Friendly, helpful staff Really good food - breakfast and dinner Comfortable bed Lovely bath products High qualify furnishings

Review 124:The pub is popular so our room above was noisy in the evening as was setting up for breakfast.

Review 125:Rye is beautiful, we walked, enjoyed the sunny Saturday and even found live music in the evening. The Standard is well located with charm and style.

Review 126:Just one of the lights at the top of the stairs needed a bulb changing which we did mention on arrival but didn't get changed until we left which made it a little difficult climbing the very steep dark staircase.

Review 127:Relaxed friendly and excellent accomodation

Review 128:Bit noisy from bar at night but didn't bother us.ear plugs provided.

Review 129:central location. Little gem of an Inn. Lovely room, great food. great staff. def stay again & recommend.

Review 130:The place is beautiful and cozy. It is perfect for a short break to experience a real village feel in Rye. The pub is fantastic with period features and lots of history, people in the pub are also great. The room was really cozy, with good facilities and perfect for our night stay. Bed was really comfortable, warm and the room is nicely decorated. I really liked the detail of them providing earplugs in case you want to go to bed early (as it is above the pub).

Review 131:Loved evening meals in the restaurant and breakfasts in the bar area. Even like climbing the step steps to the Eves. Simply delightful place to rest and recover.

Review 132:As rooms are over the pub not good for those who go to sleep early .... Though for me the hum of the pub below was comforting ... Kindly ear plugs are left for you in case this is disturbing

Review 133:Warm welcome ... Lovely mix of tradition & modern .... Keeps the feelin of a pub with rooms but many touches that make the stay luxurious... Bed so comfortable.. Beautiful free standing bath and great bath/beauty products left in room.

Review 134:The room was a little noisy, but it is a popular Inn and would only be a problem to early/light sleepers.

Review 135:Great location in the centre of the lovely medieval town of Rye. Lovely ambience with rooms sympathetically modernised, but retaining many original features. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely breakfast, local ingredients, lively evening service with very good daily changing specials - the confit pork belly was excellently done.

Review 136:Had to park in public car . Needs a shower basket or soap holder in shower. Gulls very noisy in morning.

Review 137:History and architecture of building. It has been very tastefully and sympathetically refurbished to a high standard. Fantastic location.

Review 138:Some signage to tell you where to check in would be good as it was quite overwhelming coming into a busy bar not realising there was no reception. The smell of bleach in the morning, I feel that the cleaning should be done the night before as it was rather offputting.

Review 139:Bedroom we stayed in was absolutely stunning and the staff were extremely friendly. I am not a huge cooked breakfast found that fancied one during our stay and I was not disappointed, perfect poached egg and real quality produce used throughout
