Reviews for Gallivant Hotel
Review 1:Food outstanding. Service was really friendly. Hotel - boutique style. Will definitely return. Beach minutes away (but can't be seen from hotel.) Ideal both as winter and summer break hotel.
Review 2:Wine was corked. Over passionate couple in bar!
Review 3:The food is amazing! Don't forget this is a restaurant with rooms....not the other way round! Location fab. Afternoon tea at 4pm!! Comfy beds.
Review 4:The room was a bit small. The bathroom looked tired.
Review 5:The staff were excellent and the food was great. Nice to offer a welcome drink and cake in the afternoon.
Review 6:Persistent humming noise could be heard in bedroom and sometimes a noisy radiator. These sounds could become quite intrusive.
Review 7:The breakfast facilities and times available uptil 10 am.
Review 8:room could have been bigger more fish on the menu rather than meat more choice on the menu taster menu overpriced biscuits could have been included with tea and coffee rather than extras to pay for Eggs should be free on the breakfast menu.
Review 9:excellent staff extras such as tea and cakes vegetarian options on the menu location opposite the beach all on site so little need to go out in search Delicious breakfast with gluten free options and quality food choices
Review 10:having to pay extra for breakfast. As it was included in the price, I expected a full breakfast, but you have to order extra for warm food
Review 11:The style of the place, a subtle mix between beach shack and Nordic chalet! The proximity of the beach, the fireplace, and the warm attention from the staff!
Review 12:The billing arrangements were a bit chaotic, when we checked out there was another table's dinner inadvertently added to our bill (we were never asked to sign following meals and I assume the same applies to others). The receptionists weren't particularly friendly, though they did remove the extra charges without any fuss -but no apology for the mix up either.
Review 13:Excellent food, great locally-sourced menu. Good selection of wines (though we wen't for the cheaper end of what was on offer) and nice cocktails. Lovely rooms, very comfortable beds and great linens/towels. The restaurant manager and waiters were very friendly and attentive - enough chat but not too much. Either we (or booking.com) made a mistake and the dog wasn't listed on the booking - but they sorted it out for us and were very friendly with the dog.
Review 14:Given the cost of the room, and the fact that the majority of the diners were residents, it might have been nice if the aperitif offered soon after being seated was "on the house". Failing that, it would be good if the guests had a chance to read the wine list as we accepted the offer of an aperitif and got charged £11 per glass.
Review 15:Nice comfortable room and very nice food (one of the main reasons for us going). Staff very pleasant. Location good, having a short stroll over the dunes to the beach.
Review 16:room (deck room) was on the small side and the sound insulation was poor from rooms on either side - room to close to busy reception
Review 17:room and bed were comfortable. food was very good and staff attentive fresh and breezy (good sea side style) accommodation handy to a great beach
Review 18:There were a couple of issues in the bathroom of our first room. The staff moved us, but unfortunately the radiator would not turn off in the new room and it was very hot which made sleeping a bit uncomfortable.
Review 19:Fantastic location, just two minutes away from the beach! The food, which is locally sourced, is delicious, especially the breakfast. Yogurt panacotta- amazing!
Review 20:Inflexible around restaurant bookings - not allowed to eat in restaurant because expecting large table even though it was empty except for two tables at the time. A bit "Computer says no". Room 11; pretty soulless- but perfectly well equipped. Nowhere to relax with a drink/paper except two sofas in the restaurant. Not much good with 10+ rooms.
Review 21:Friendly welcoming staff (Andrea). Bed linen and towels. Strong hot showers. Quiet. Right by the sea.
Review 22:Our room was close to the reception area and a loggia which had a music speaker on until we complained that we couldn't sleep, to be fair it was dealt with immediately, however it shouldn't have been necessary as there was not anybody using the area.
Review 23:The staff were very pleasant and most helpful . The ambiance was welcoming and the food excellent .
Review 24:We were charged £2 extra for bread that we asked for as the starter was runny & we were given only a knife & fork to eat it with. When checking the bills of both meals we had been overcharged. The room was cramped with wall pegs to hang our clothes.
Review 25:Music which wasn't needed and found distracting. Foreign staff, hard to understand. Bar closing too early, overpriced food
Review 26:Comfortable rooms, nice location
Review 27:Breakfast was good but could be improved: you have to pay extra at breakfast for 'fancy' coffees and a limited menu - I was told there was no possibility of any greens with my eggs..... what kitchen doesn't have greens when they serve lunch & dinner? It was a shame but obviously was a minor point in comparison to our lovely comfortable stay.
Review 28:Amazing staff throughout the hotel, very comfortable bed, loved it so much we booked for next year.
Review 29:Room was a bit small. Bathrooms a bit basic - but the garden and the gorgeous restaurant more than made up for this
Review 30:Lunch and dinner are divine. Esp excellent veggie choices. The gravel garden is especially beautiful place to hang out and have a cocktail.
Review 31:We booked a "superior" room, which was just about big enough for a couple. For the room rate (not cheap), we would have expected more hanging/wardrobe/drawer space.
Review 32:A magical location if the weather's good....if it's not, best go into Rye! Style, furnishings and breakfast are pleasantly quirky.
Review 33:Sparse rooms, dirty carpets, dusty curtain pelmets, dirty outside windows, noisy road close by, room not child friendly as too close to car park and road and nowhere to put things (e.g. kettle) out of reach.
Review 34:Dog friendliness and proximity to beach. Restaurant menu was local and varied and food was very good.
Review 35:Ok so it's on a road but it's 2 mins over the road to incredible dunes! Locally cafes on the beach not up to much so take a picnic - loads in and around rye though.
Review 36:Bliss - cool and kind of shabby chic - the little pebble yard at the back great for relaxing and having a drink. Great food and bar - just embrace the 'trendied up motel' vibe and enjoy.
Review 37:6 months after booking I edeivedacall rote hotel saying that they did not have a pet friendly room available and tjT booking.com should not have taken my booking, then I received another call saying it was ok..all v confusing! Breakfast on the 2nd day was terrible. I don't know if it was because I was I my own or sat outside but I waited so long to be served with the waiter bringing one thing at a time, my toast and coffee wS old so I eventually walked out. Shame as breakfast on the first day was lovely.
Review 38:Location fabulous. Food was great, especially the lobster brioche and Pork with rhubarb! Bed wX really comfortable. Facilities for dogs was good. Receptionist really friendly.
Review 39:the bathroom door was clear glass in places and next to main door so you may want to sing while on the toilet to warn people not to come in.
Review 40:Location fantastic , immaculate room. large bath. Lovely decked area, space to chill out . restaurant food- amazing staff incredibly helpful.
Review 41:Slightly overpriced for what it is. Little bit disapointed with the menus for breakfast and dinner. Ended up driving into rye for food
Review 42:Good location. Handy for the beach. Friendly staff
Review 43:My son tried to phone the hotel (via the switchboard) several times during the evening of our arrival to order a bottle of fizz for my mother but there was no reply. (We didn't discover this until the next morning.)
Review 44:We were staying to celebrate my mother's 96th birthday., made possible as one room had disabled bathroom facilities. A birthday card was put in my mother's room to greet her on arrival and at breakfast she was given a surprise plate of scrambled egg/ smoked salmon with "Happy Birthday" drizzled on the plate. There was a very easy relaxed atmosphere and the staff made my mother feel very special.
Review 45:Staff were pleasant but felt a bit like they were going through the motions. Room was nice but v small. Meal was ok although had to send potatoes back as almost raw! Did feel a bit disappointed and as if superficially it all looks great but actually doesn't warrant the steep prices in the restaurant.
Review 46:Nicely decorated hotel- staff were amenable and a walk over to the sand dunes. Lovely cake and tea at 4pm.
Review 47:"Small room" is extremely small indeed, the bed was very soft/uncomfortable (though seemed to be new)
Review 48:The staff, the design, proximity to the beach, the food, the ambiance
Review 49:For the price we paid surprised that a cooked breakfast was not included tho cereal, and other cooked options were included.
Review 50:Lovely hotel, staff v helpful & knowledgeable about local area, locally sourced food etc. V close to beach & Rye for sightseeing.
Review 51:The bedroom was filthy, so much dust! Could not get anything to eat at ten o'clock in the evening, not even a sandwich. It was very noisy with others in rooms keeping thier doors open. We had to wait a long time to be acknowleged that we were there for breakfast. Seemed to be somewhere that people could sit and have breakfast in their dressing gowns, not what you'd expect for a hotel where it's £125 for a room, more like a cheap travel lodge. Very disappointed and would not recommend this place
Review 52:Was hoping for a bit more of a selection at breakfast time but I did enjoy the local apple juice and the granola.
Review 53:The staff were extremely helpful and quick to respond when I asked in advance if it would be possible for my boyfriend to have a vegan meal prepared for him. We were both extremely impressed and thought the food was fantastic. Location of hotel was very convenient after visiting Dungeness, seaside decor was perfect, loved the complimentary tea and cake at 4pm and it was very close to camber sands.
Review 54:Minor point but the shower head didn't stay at the height it was set at. "Honesty" cupboard hosts the only CCTV camera in the whole hotel!
Review 55:Incredible fish served in the restaurant.
Review 56:Someone kept trying to get in to our room during the night which was a bit scary, although doors lock automatically so they couldn't get in. Would prefer a more conventional breakfast - waffles a bit dry.
Review 57:Gorgeous location, right opposite the beach, and beautiful decor.
Review 58:Walls were thin (could hear next doors TV til late), bathroom wasn't the cleanest (especially the air vent), a very young receptionist 'tutted' at the fact I couldn't close the front door properly which wasn't necessary
Review 59:The location to the beach, the politeness of a few staff members, the food, the parking, the honesty larder.
Review 60:Wifi in our room was patchy but that was a minor nuisance.
Review 61:We like the location, staff and accommodation. However dining is a particular highlight at the Gallivant - excellent dishes made using local produce.
Review 62:Such comfortable beds + down quilts Wonderful breakfast - home made / local produce - recovery station a bonus Quality dining - excellent local wine Stylish interior & special touches Very pleasant & helpful staff Easy reach of vast beach + dunes
Review 63:At the risk of sounding like Alex Polizzi. Shabby chic doesn't have to mean that the paint finishes in the rooms don't match the front of house and restaurant areas. The distressed up cycled furniture works well, but more attention to grout finishing and paintwork would bring the standard up to match the rest of the experience. We stayed in room 9 - Fyi.
Review 64:Located across the road from the stunning camber sands for long walks. Relaxed atmosphere. Noble Isle toiletries very nice and the honesty tuck shop a nice touch. Bed was very comfy and slept well.
Review 65:It feels a little overpriced, for what are essential stylish chalet style accommodation.
Review 66:The hotel is a brilliant location with easy access to the Camber Sands . The restaurant is excellent and serves wonderful food.
Review 67:Website was excellent! Descriptive, accurate ,excellent pictures Staff professional and helpful.. Food of a very high standard... Locally sourced ... Homemade... A delight to eat ... Rooms clean toiletries excellent ...highly recommend!
Review 68:Super staff plus lovely room and location even in winter.Had small problem with room that was booked not available on arrival due to plumbing problem but staff made up for that.Seating to relax in restaurant bar are restricted.Food excellent would stay again.
Review 69:Eating was a bit close to everyone else! I remembered it seeming a bit more laid back before. But I'm a fussy man
Review 70:Bed and sofa was super comfy. Right near the beach. Afternoon tea thrown in was great. Food good , ace desert
Review 71:Some paintwork in room could do with retouching.....
Review 72:Relaxed dining. Interesting & well cooked tasting menu. Slick service. Breakfast choices comprehensive even without cooked options. Comfortable rooms with unexpected touches.. Superb location but to be fair we knew that already!
Review 73:The accommodation was not on par with the service and food. The corridor leading to all the rooms was in desperate need of redecoration - paint chips and scuff marks and a very well worn carpet. The bedroom and bathroom were also looking a little tired and need of a lick of paint. So in sharp contras to the restaurant decor and reception.
Review 74:Staff were very welcoming on arrival as well as in the restaurant - although it was a bit over the top being asked at every course by 2 different staff if everything was ok. The food was very good and the wine pairing recommendations were spot on.
Review 75:They often stay in upmarket hotels and found The Gallivant of an excellent standard. We visited them in the morning for breakfast and found, as they had previously said, that the staff were extremely helpful. The breakfast was great - good quality local ingredients and we liked the 'Recovery station' with all the components of a Bloody Mary plus Alka Seltzer - we didn't need it but it did make us smile. Many thanks.
Review 76:Although it made for some great giggle material, we could hear the couple next door playing a game of very loud twister. I think they both won, the walls might be a little thin though.
Review 77:It was a warm welcome at The Gallivant. The style of the room was original and although it was wet outside on our stay, we would've made use of the private garden.
Review 78:Minor point on an otherwise wonderful stay....Could have a sign on the underfloor heating switch. We turned it on by accident and the room got too warm. Didn't realise until the morning.
Review 79:Everything! Seems to have thought of everything. Afternoon tea and comfy seats with fleece covers and log fire lovely in the winter. Lots of thought gone into the way breakfast was served. Food magnificent - all local. Everyone really helpful. Across the road was the beach where we had a bracing Autumn walk. Loved every minute of it.
Review 80:The welcome, the ambience, the food, especially the breakfast. The staff here deserve the highest praise. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a fantastic break!
Review 81:carpet dirty, no milk in shared fridge, plug broken had to take it apart and found lots of hairs attached to it blinds did not operate smoothly, nothing about the room was worth the £115. cost ...
Review 82:If we were staying longer, there was no wardrobe or real storage space.
Review 83:The comfy bed and quality bedding. The afternoon cup of tea and cake gesture. The beach opposite.
Review 84:Have stayed here twice now and has been a great stay both times. Rooms are good size and comfortable. Staff are friendly and food is very nice. Also only minutes away from the beach!
Review 85:At £170 per night b&b didn't expect stained carpets . A few errors on the evening meal which to be fair were corrected and apologised for however, kind of put a damper on things. Bed really comfortable but pillows poor.
Review 86:Staff on the whole friendly, relaxed ambience. Great breakfast
Review 87:Was a little disappointed by the knowledge of the wait staff in the restaurant. We had a few questions about some of the dishes on the menu which they struggled to answer. But they were very friendly, and did try to help.
Review 88:Stayed a few times now and each time it's a joy. Wonderful boutique hotel with a rustic seaside feel to the rooms. Love the added extras - Noble Isle products in the bathroom, DVD player, free cookies. It all adds to the overall experience. Location is perfect - you walk out of the hotel, across the road and you are at the entrance to the beach (albeit up a tall sand dune!). The restaurant is lovely, even more so after the last refit. Very relaxing, good local produce and surprisingly good wine list. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again next year.
Review 89:The restaurant was exorbitantly priced for tiny portions, truly shocking!, and the service was poor. Eg: £3.95 for a side of sweet potato rosemary fries sounds great, but I couldn't quite believe it when 6 small chips arrived. £2.50 for 2 very ordinary (and cold) slices of bread with butter as an accompaniment to the over-priced terrine. The baby gem salad on the menu came as mixed leaves, but nobody thought to point it out - if I'm paying top dollar I expect these details to be observed! The restaurant just didn't seem to care about its customers in the way that the hotel side did. I overheard other people telling staff they'd been served the wrong food, or chasing food that had been forgotten, it wasn't just me that felt invisible. If it's living on the reputation of its predecessor The Place (which I loved) then it's on borrowed time. There was nothing wrong with the food, but the only thing that was memorable was the bill - and that I woke up hungry the next morning.
Review 90:Fantastic bed, the room was lovely, good to have a sofa too, luxurious toiletries in the bathroom. In fact lots of lovely little details in the rooms that showed real care. No-nonsense wifi was reliable too, a prerequisite as I was there to work.
Review 91:All the dirty laundry and hoovers in the hallway on walk down to room when we arrived and in the morning when we went to breakfast.
Review 92:Friendly staff and excellant location
Review 93:Our room faced the car park which wasn't very scenic and the you could hear the road noise. The room got very warm at night and we had trouble sleeping. Unfortunately to hotel doesn't have AC and when I went out to ask for a fan from the night porter they didn't have any available. The next morning staff told me they have fans on order so hopefully that should help the next guests.
Review 94:Very friendly staff who were eager to please. Nice seaside decor in the room. The complimentary beach towels and beach bag were very handy!
Review 95:Could not get a table for lunch in the restaurant on second day (Sunday)as fully booked and also had a function.
Review 96:Great staff, excellent location very close to a beautiful beach, nicebig room that fitted whole family and very good restaurant.
Review 97:Could do with a little more storage in the bedroom but against everything that was so brilliant this is the tiniest minor niggle.
Review 98:Lovely hotel in a lovely location. Lovely staff who really looked after us. Adored the room with its private garden. The food was wonderful. We were only there for one night but will definitely be going back for a longer stay.

Review 131:Comfortable
