Reviews for The George In Rye
Review 1:We had meal in the resteurant which was awful . We ordered oysters rockerfella which were under cooked and had been cut in half therefor had no taste. I had lamb for my main and didn't come up as it was described . Not value for the price. This is a shame as this could be the best place in Sussex with the right food. You need the full exsperience.
Review 2:The room was amazing
Review 3:Nothing bad but room smaller than had anticipated and, maybe unreasonably, have come to expect bathrobes to be provided and had omitted to bring one
Review 4:Charming location and hotel individualistic shape. Staff pleasant and good relaxed feel to the place
Review 5:The only downside is the lack of parking. We parked overnight in a nearby car park which was fine on a January Sunday but may prove difficult at peak times. The rain was torrential on the afternoon we arrived and we needed to walk from the car park trying to keep our bags dry.
Review 6:Rooms were very comfortable and a little quirky with lots of character and luxurious little touches. Staff were lovely , service was faultless , attentive but not over the top or stuffy. Delicious food , perfectly cooked breakfast.
Review 7:There was a wedding on at the weekend which meant it wasn't as quiet a stay as perhaps we would have hoped for with the foyer area packed with guests. No hotel car park meant a long walk with baggage.
Review 8:Friendly staff, good sized luxury room, fantastic porterhouse steak and Berry's wine, delicious breakfast.
Review 9:Came back for our anniversary They upgraded us for no charge and left some small gifts in the bedroom Always a special place to visit My wife wants to live in this hotel !!!
Review 10:Nothing really bad but parking is a bit of a pain although cheap enough. You need to be fit to walk from the nearest car park!!
Review 11:The ambiance of the hotel, excellent food and wine selection. Appreciated the individual room decoration and the fact that items could be purchased in their associated shop
Review 12:I had room 12 at the front of the building and the single glazed class meant I could hear people outside until late then the deliveries early in the morning.
Review 13:Great food hotel in a very nice setting.
Review 14:Being seated right next to another couple on tables rather too close together in an otherwise all but empty restaurant
Review 15:A very comfortable and well appointed room. Excellent breakfast - real kippers!
Review 16:We were unable to have the room we had booked as there were maintenance problems. Had to have a less luxurious room although it was clean and comfortable.
Review 17:The restaurant was well organised and service was faultless.
Review 18:The staff were all delightful, the food (particularly the lobster) was amazing! The rooms were all stunning! We loved it so much, we stayed an extra night and have recommended that our friends go already.
Review 19:Only the lack of a lift. However on booking the superior room, we were rung to check if we were able to manage the stairs so cannot really complain!
Review 20:Lovely room, number 16. Nice bar, lounge and breakfast. Good staff.
Review 21:Sunday evening was poor service , with long wait for meals . New staff who seemed lost with no leader.
Review 22:Very good staff in both Restaurant & bar on Friday & Saturday .. Regular staff !
Review 23:No bath robes in room as advertised Also no tea and coffee making facilities in room. Having to make our own toast - don't exepext that in accommodation with this star rating.
Review 24:Room was beautiful. Choice of products excellent. Staff friendly
Review 25:This is a lovely hotel with a relaxed feel & friendly but quietly efficient staff. Its location, at the heart of this charming town, could not be better & our (superior) room was spacious ,tastefully decorated & very well appointed.
Review 26:We found the dinner menue to have large portions EG a 10 Oz steak which is too large for us. I expect that is because of our American cousins. We chose to eat at reasturants/pubs in the town.
Review 27:Good proffessional service brillant breakfast
Review 28:No hotel car park was inconvenient. I was a little taken aback that a member of staff had been in our room to turn back the bed while we were having a meal in the restaurant. I wasn't aware that would happen.
Review 29:We liked that the hotel was quite informal. The breakfast was excellent and the food in the restaurant was also really good.
Review 30:Bedroom in rear annex - would be lovely in good weather but in heavy rain not so good. Also our bedroom (on ground floor) was right next to front door that slammed so our sleep was somewhat broken.
Review 31:Location of hotel, decor, breakfast, welcome.
Review 32:First room we got was not smelling clean, we were upgraded to a suite without fuss
Review 33:Restaurant v good, hotel v comfortable and chic, staff v professional
Review 34:Small concern lack of headroom in top floor junior suit, but staff happily moved us to a luxury room
Review 35:Exceptional service and good well run bar , food & menu outstanding .affordable luxury.
Review 36:Breakfast service was poor. Had to ask for refills and clean crockery each day for buffet. Did not think it was four star standard. Informed reception . Dined twice in restaurant - food not as high standard as expected very average. Ate out on last night as disappointed with hotel.
Review 37:Location and ambience of hotel
Review 38:Room a bit crowded, we moved an armchair to give us more space. The fan in the room stopped working.
Review 39:Breakfast, location overall ambience were all very good
Review 40:We came here to celebrate our anniversary. We were greeted by a very pleasant lady, who showed us to our room, and we were given complementary cocktails. The staff were very helpful throughout our stay. The food was lovely. Very enjoyable stay!
Review 41:It can get busy there but it's a great atmosphere.
Review 42:We love this hotel. The staff are friendly, the room is clean and the bed was very comfy. The bar and restaurant are wonderful, worth booking a table in advance!
Review 43:If you stay in one of the top floor rooms at the front of hotel take your ear plugs, nesting seagulls don't sleep and keep calling all through the night, well at least it seemed like it. Only a fan for cooling down room so window had to be open which obviously didn't help, other than that all OK.
Review 44:Nice hotel, well equipped with cosy bar and good restaurant, not too far from water front
Review 45:Noise of seagulls kept us awake on the first night. Lack of parking (which we did know about before we booked and know is outside the hotel's control).
Review 46:The food in the restaurant was very good. Staff were welcoming, friendly & professional. They were also fantastic at dealing with issues that arose (beyond their control) i.e. a power cut that left the hotel without water for one day and we had a swarm of bees pass through our bathroom en route to a new "home". They dealt with things promptly, without fuss, made us comfortable, gave us a new room and complimentary drinks while bees were removed & upgraded us on the 2nd night to make up for it. They showed concern for our enjoyment throughout our stay.
Review 47:Breakfast was excellent but the evening meal was disappointing food quite bland and not the quality one would expect from a Hotel of this quality. Gave feedback to the waitress but no comments received from the Kitchen.
Review 48:The helpful staff, the room, the general atmosphere of the Hotel
Review 49:Against the great location in the High street was of course some noise especially early Monday morning with the road sweepers & dustbin lorry but still worth it. Our room was very warm.
Review 50:Great location to easily walk around the delights of Rye. Would stay again.
Review 51:No parking. I didn't think the food was v good. In the grill the steaks were v well done.
Review 52:Nice atmospheric hotel, modern and functional, in a lovely setting in rye
Review 53:Parking when you have luggage. Breakfast a bit disjointed.
Review 54:Central position. Bedrooms very comfortable. Bathrooms were lovely. Bar staff are fantastic
Review 55:You have to be aware that there is no car park for the hotel and that you need to park about 5 minutes walk away. There is an unloading parking bay outside the hotel so you can get rid of suitcases/passengers etc but then you need to park elsewhere.
Review 56:Very helpful staff and comfortable room. We were at the back of the hotel which was very quiet.
Review 57:Early morning 5 o'c rubbish collection. Seagulls noise at 6 o'c. No aircon on hottest day. Bedroom full of designer clutter leaving little room for manoeuvre.
Review 58:Location, atmosphere
Review 59:Hotel pillows are always an issue but these too weren't so comfy - they really need to be replaced every few months or so. Not a huge deal but it does make the comfort level go right up when they're good. It's on the expensive end for a hotel in the UK. I do quite a bit of travel and this was by far one of the most expensive places I've stayed.
Review 60:This is a very sweet hotel. It's old and the floors aren't even but it's all a part of the charm. Cooked breakfast is an option for breakfast - always a bonus if you've been out the night before... Staff were very nice and helpful with recommendations.
Review 61:Hotel was not full but we were put in a room with no view and a very noisy generator type although I was advised the hotel did not have a generator and very dark! The complaint was handled efficiently and we were upgraded but when I asked why that room was allocated when other better rooms at the same price were free and was it because I had booked through booking.com I was told rooms were allocated by computer. Hey guys human beings write the computer programmes and they can always be overwritten by human intervention!
Review 62:Restaurant, gardens, staff
Review 63:I liked everything. We were the only guests that were not part of a large wedding party and were thoughtfully given a delightful room far away enough from the main event so as not to be disturbed. Although we didn't need it the staff had also thought to make us a provisional dinner booking in the resteraunt which was very kind.
Review 64:The promotional literature describes a traditional, historic hotel. Thus we expected a hotel type experience - relaxed and mostly among other guests. Sadly, the public areas were totally given over to a noisy pub with all the comings and goings of same. That was a real disappointment and should be made clear on the website.
Review 65:Our room was fantastic though we were woken twice in the small hours by the bakery deliveries across the road!
Review 66:We were in a room at the top of the building which felt like an attic bedroom and involved taking our luggage up several flights of stairs.
Review 67:The location was great, though none of the staff told us we were right beside the most interesting part of Rye. We would have completely missed it if a shop assistant hadn't pointed out the whole area behind the hotel which is really pretty. It is the location of Lamb House where both Henry James and E F Benson lived. It would be really great if there was more local information available in the rooms and the hotel. We are not from the area and not familiar with Rye. None of the staff seemed local either.
Review 68:Very minor complaint - no decaff coffee in the selection for the in room tea/coffee making facility.
Review 69:Breakfast is cooked to order and is excellent. WiFi works well. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Hotel is a lovely 15 century building. Location is right in the toen.
Review 70:Not a bad experience; but would prefer a proper shower rather than one in the admittedly large enough for 2 bath!
Review 71:Staff were friendly and made us feel special on our Wedding Anniversary. Food was good and an expansive wine list.
Review 72:Small lounge area was very comfortable but too close to the reception desk where every word could be heard.
Review 73:Very comfortable beds , pillows and room facilities.
Review 74:Only comment re breakfast. Bacon bit overdone for my liking but not a problem
Review 75:Near town centre. Parking available nearby at a reasonable cost. Hotel just as write up said
Review 76:There is no on site parking. You have to park 5 minutes' walk from the hotel in a public carpark - only £1.50 for 24 hours but not very convenient.
Review 77:Our welcome was warm and knowledgeable. Our room was clean and soooo comfortable. With all the added extras.loved the crime roll top bath. Dinner was delightful and breakfast was excellent. Wished I had booked two nights! Will definitely be rebooking-
Review 78:Room was poor for the price, stuck in the attic and all pretty tired.Public areas had been stripped of old fittings and redone cheaply and nastily.Whole place needs a big overhaul.Breakfast was fine though, and staff quite good on the whole
Review 79:Good location in the old town.
Review 80:room was a little warm at night, heavy quilt could be replaced by lighter quilt in warmer months
Review 81:The meal in the restaurant was very good, had fish and very nice too
Review 82:No car parking nearby, unless you were lucky to get street parking, but this was only after 1700. Dinner menu range was ok for one night, but needed to go out for 2nd night for something more acceptable. Service at Dinner was poor, even tho' not busy.
Review 83:Central location
Review 84:The room was quite small for the price ( but beautifully designed).
Review 85:Great location and small lovely room with everything you need. A special mention for the breakfast- delicious!
Review 86:Staff at dinner were slow to respond & the menu choices were limited. The food presented was of a high quality.
Review 87:The roll top bath and general ambience. The breakfasts were great too!
Review 88:It's not "shabby chic" = some aspects are just shabby. Incredibly uncomfortable bed. Bathroom not very clean - hairs all over the place.
Review 89:Fantastic central location. But couldn't help wondering what a great success Hotel du Vin would make of these premises.
Review 90:Tea and coffee making in rooms bit of a faff as the kettle has a fixed 2ft lead Booked a table for dinner in the grill room but we're given a table in the bar no apology or explanation offered Young staff were poorly manageability our wine and starters were offered first to a nearby table
Review 91:Good location and facilities Nicely furnished and decorated room Food great especially breakfast
Review 92:the coffee
Review 93:Everything about this hotel was excellent, friendly and helpful staff, stayed in Junior Suite which was excellent - definitely planning a return trip
Review 94:We paid something like £280 for one night which isn't cheap but wasn't unreasonable for a fairly high end hotel. However we got stung by a £40 surcharge for my two small boys (even though we booked and paid for a family room). I thought this was very cheeky given the original cost and also that there was nothing to warn me this would be the case. Took the shine off it felt rather duped.
Review 95:Great room, generally good service albeit a little slow.
Review 96:Room 41, Junior Suite, full price £295.00. The bedspread had a huge, fresh stain in the centre. The light fittings were filthy, as were the bannister and ledges down the stairwell. There was a previous occupant's vest in the wardrobe, hair and feathers on the carpet, and the scatter cushions were generally stained and dirty. It seems that the housekeepers do the minimum essentials and leave the rest of the room. When we complained, a concerted effort was made by the very efficient Rooms Manager to get all of this sorted whilst we were at dinner. A discount was made to our bill, but by then the damage was done. A follow up call from the hotel's owner did nothing to reassure me that she was really that bothered that our stay had been spoiled and was a huge disappointment. This is not what I expect from a 4 star hotel charging these kind of rates. Needless to say, I do not recommend staying here and won't be back.
Review 97:Room 41. The bathroom is amazing and the bath is huge, but this was massively overshadowed by the General cleanliness of the rest of the room (see below). Restaurant: The menu and quality of food was excellent, as was the choice of wines. Service was a little sporadic, especially given the number of staff milling around. Breakfast was also very good, although the bar area needs a good clean!
Review 98:No bad experiences but the age of the building meant that there wasn't an open window in the bathroom. Consequently, it became very steamed up after a shower and a stronger fan might help.
Review 99:Well appointed room and superior extras such as Ren products and coffee/tea. Lovely, comfortable bed and delicious breakfasts, both full English and continental.
Review 100:overcrowded at breakfast. had to eat in the bar (a very late breakfast could have conincided with the early drinking customers)
Review 101:comfortable bed. well appointed room, excellent restaurant
Review 102:Nothing
Review 103:Excellent room and comfortable bed. Breakfast really great especially with table near log fire. Staff very attentive and gave assistance with luggage up to 3rd floor ( no lift ! ).
Review 104:only quibble is lack of parking on site but there were plenty of spaces for only £1.50 a day just a five minute walk away. But given quaint nature of Rye this is a not unreasonable issue.
Review 105:The George at Rye is a very comfortable, relaxing place to be with excellent food and welcoming staff
Review 106:we booked The George in Rye for a rest after the festive period and it did exactly what we needed to and more. It is a perfect spot to relax and unwind. The rooms are gorgeous and the restaurant was great. I would definitely come here again.
Review 107:Nothing really. Maybe a bit pricey but still well worth the money.
Review 108:Kindness of staff, location in the heart of town, comfort of bed, great breakfast, beautiful hotel.
Review 109:In our room the shower didn't drain away very well and the toilet was difficult to flush (room 40) but this was just a small niggle.
Review 110:The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. Lovely log fire and a real Christmassy feel. Rye itself is full of character and a great place to visit in December!
Review 111:We tried to get a drink before dinner at the bar but gave up as there was one guy on and he didn't seem very with it. Breakfast was a bit chaotic - we had to collar staff to get served, we had to ask for milk with our tea. They were nice enough, they just didn't seem too bothered.
Review 112:Lovely room. Very clean. Pleasant check in and check out. Cosy, quiet and comfortable.
Review 113:Our room across a courtyard and up a few stairs. Not so good on wet days! Must be lovely in summer though.
Review 114:Very friendly staff. Great breakfast, good restaurant. Quirky décor, lots of character.
Review 115:Bad lighting in room. A little modest in size. The noise from adjacent ballroom. Beware Room 2 on a function night!
Review 116:Situation, vibey, comfortable, great breakfast, comfortable bed, excellent shower.
Review 117:No Hotel parking, but cheap overnight parking (£1:50) in market place about 10 mins walk back up hill. Not ideal if on a motor cycle and could be a concern re: security for some motorists.
Review 118:Very comfortable room. A good restaurant if slightly elaborate cooking. A good quality breakfast Attentive and pleasant staff. Nice bar with real ale selection and open fires. Interesting Town
Review 119:Disturbed sleep due to street noise. We had a room on the front of the building with sash windows. Wish there had been some secondary double glazing to dull the noise. One night I was woken at about 2am by a small group of the hotel's residents who were in the street, just outside the front door, shouting. I would have expected the night staff to have had a word & asked them to quieten down or move on!! You can only park on High Street for 1 hour between 9am - 6pm but car parks not too far away. Having said that there was only 1 night out of 4 when we didn't get a space on the High Street.
Review 120:Excellent location on the High Street. Good facilities in the room: tea/coffee, bottled water, dressing gowns etc. Good breakfast - between us we must have tried all the options & had no complaints!
Review 121:The restaurant is fairly pretentious and overpriced and doesn't present the same value for money as the cost of the accomodation. Whilst the breakfast was delicious & beautifully presented, the service was a bit hit & miss. Often several waiters would ask you the same question or try to take your order- or would ask what you'd like for your hot breakfast whilst you have a mouthful of food from the cold buffet.
Review 122:The George is in a great location on Rye's historic High Street, minutes away from St. Mary's Church & Ypres Tower and other points of interest. Beautifully done up boutique hotel. The breakfast is to die for.
Review 123:The only negative was that the room hadn't been dusted properly. The side tables, lamps, and radio especially. But the bathroom was very clean. Would have been nice to have an iPod/phone player in the room.
Review 124:Amazing bed...very comfortable. Great breakfast. We will definitely be back.
Review 125:Unfortunately the parking can be a problem but the location more than made up for having to park in a public car park, a few minutes walk away.
Review 126:This hotel is all about attention to detail. The room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely big bed and luxurious bed linen. The breakfast was amazing with plenty of choice and the staff were charming and helpful. Would definitely stay again.
Review 127:please see above, ended up having to pay an upgrade to get the standard of room we thought we had booked. Dining room at breakfast didn't appear to have been cleaned from the previous evening.
Review 128:Staff very helpful .Lovely location and very nice evening meal
Review 129:No parking, although it is nearby it up a steep pedestrianized cobbled road which could be slippery in bad weather.
Review 130:The restaurant, the bedroom, the breakfast, the ambiance.
Review 131:Beautiful decor throughout with fine attention to detail. Care and thought given to allocating a room to suit individual preferences. Super breakfast included and lovely dinner. Helpful friendly staff throughout the hotel
Review 132:We told multiple staff that we had gotten married the day before - no special congratulations note, bottle of bubbly or even chocolates on our pillow :(
Review 133:Parking is a bit of a pain in Rye, not the hotels fault though.
Review 134:Super friendly staff, great decor, awesome location, top breakfasts, quality bar... A great example of how to run a hotel.
Review 135:The didn't have record of our dinner reservation in their system, though they still managed to accommodate us.
Review 136:Beautiful room, friendly staff, great pub/restaurant, delicious breakfast.
Review 137:Loads of noise early in the morning with deliveries and bin collections. Hard to get dinner in the hotel, no light bar meals as an option especially as we were travelling with our 4 year old. Reception staff not that friendly.
Review 138:We loved our room, breakfast was great, the location in the town was central.
Review 139:There was not a lot of parking near or at the hotel but we found somewhere to park without too much trouble
Review 140:The hotel was very comfortable and stylish and had a great atmosphere. Make sure you book for dinner as soon as you arrive as the restaurant is very popular. You are right in the centre of Rye and everywhere is within walking distance.
