Reviews for Athenaeum House Hotel
Review 1:This Hotel is a little quirky and the better for it. It is not a "cookie cutter" impersonal place but has character, The staff are friendly and make time for a chat and to give information about the surrounding countryside. The view at night across the river to Waterford itself is gorgeous.
Review 2:Having been there before it was instant relaxation in the knowledge that we would be well looked after and find the privacy and tranquility which the location inspires.
Review 3:Rooms could do with a little TLC but in saying that not unpleasant at all.
Review 4:Big rooms, clean, friendly staff, value for money, had a very good meal and menu for what I didn't eat looks very good also. Would definitely stay again if in the area.
Review 5:Furnishings in our room 421 were a little care-worn.Also a touch too dark, mostly a matter of choice.
Review 6:Staff were very attentive and friendly.Food was excellent, served in a nice setting.Great breakfast choices.Very restful, no noise, great location.
Review 7:Rooms need upgrade. Beds very old. Water supply needs upgrade. Small amount of money required to make this a 5 Star Hotel.
Review 8:Surroundings very nice. Property special. Restaurant First Class. All staff excellent.
Review 9:Small tv and view to car park not too nice, fry for breakfast was underwhelming. Pancakes were better.
Review 10:Quietness ,beautiful house.lovely helpfull staff, food is excellent, close to city.
Review 11:It's a little out of the way
Review 12:Lovely relaxed environment comfortable excellent food great service Beautiful room with comfortable bed spacious bathroom with power shower. It would have been great value at twice the price I paid
Review 13:There was chewing gum on floor beside bed , the sheets looked dirty , the satellite on tv didn't work , the kettle didn't either but the girl in reception replaced it .
Review 14:Only good thing I can say about it is that the girl on reception was very nice and helpful
Review 15:Would have liked a footpath down to the Waterford waterfront rather than having to drive!
Review 16:The upgrade to a top floor suite - the room we were first allocated was on the ground floor with virtually no view, but was changed without quibble when we reminded them we did not want a ground floor room.
Review 17:Spacious room, helpful staff and an excellent restaurant. Worth going for a meal but a bonus if you are staying, an excellent chef. Food intolerances well catered for and the staff advised in advance.
Review 18:GPS coordinates on the hotel's website appear incorrect and led us miles from the hotel. Reception were very friendly on the phone with directions.
Review 19:Quiet, late check out, beautiful breakfast room.
Review 20:The pillows need to be improved, very flat with little or no support.
Review 21:Beautiful building with superb restaurant, room service however was a let down as breakfast in bed had several items missing. Stayed in one of the suites which was very nice.
Review 22:Rooms not cleaned, bin still had rubbish in it, head and pubic hair in bed, bed was also like a rock, breakfast was the worst I have ever had and got very bad vibe off management, we are not hard to please at all but this was a joke
Review 23:I found it very hard to say anything good about our stay here, very disappointed
Review 24:Requested double bed but turned out to be two single beds put together.. Requested upstairs room with view but got basement room with nothing to look at. No facilities available at all. Poor breakfast selection. No separate bar area. More suitable as B&B than my opinion of a hotel. Having said all that it was ok but wouldn't stay again. When I booked this trip I had booked another hotel originally but then changed as I thought this hotel looked nicer. Disappointed unfortunately
Review 25:Friendly helpful staff.
Review 26:Our dated decorations. Poor Wi-Fi connection in John Lennon's room. Horrible old bed and dirty room!
Review 27:Grand looking building and brilliant breakfast and staffs serving the breakfast.
Review 28:The room could do with some TLC, wall a bit grubby in places and the lamp shades by bed looked a bit weathered.
Review 29:The food was nice and the view excellent overlooking Reginald tower and the river. The bed was big&comfortable. The staff were friendly and inviting.
Review 30:WiFi was advertised as being available in each room but it was really only available in the public areas.
Review 31:Good room, excellent meals (both breakfast and dinner)
Review 32:Wish lounge area was a little more inviting ie more at atmosphere
Review 33:Its a lovely place to stay regardless of the commnets about 'dark furniture'. Food in restaurant is excellent. Good place!
Review 34:The Hotel is a little off the beaten track and difficult to find and the initial portion of the Driveway would test any suspension.
Review 35:Wonderful Staff & management. Food absolutely marvellous. The staff go the extra mile to make your stay a great experience.
Review 36:I stayed here recently for a friends wedding. We are all in and around 23. The rooms were great. The layout was fantastic and really beautiful. I lost a pair of earrings and one of the members of staff went out of her way to find them. The staff were so nice and made us all feel very welcome. I would most certainly recommend it!
Review 37:Not enough staff for breakfast felt sorry for the two staff on duty they were doing their best to serve all the guests
Review 38:Room very tired and dated, bathroom was not relaxing.
Review 39:Room not very clean Bathroom window not closing properly Mini fridge not cooling TV no guide Bed not comfortable Breakfast very basic Arms on Armchair black (not. paint )while rest of chair purple Room very dismal Driveway badly needing potholes filled in and resurfaced.
Review 40:Staff were friendly Lift worked nicely
Review 41:The hotel is down a very bumpy side road (fix your potholes -- it's the only detraction from an otherwise perfect stay!).
Review 42:24 hour reception meant we could arrive at stupid o'clock and still receive a warm welcome. The hotel is a 17th century Georgian building, quite beautiful but accessible with a modern lift. Our room was enormous, very clean, and well-appointed, with a luxurious king-sized bed, a writing desk, side chairs and table, and huge wardrobe. The bathroom was all done in marble with two sinks and a shower/bath with built-in handrails. The hotel is artsy and very modern, with each room being named after a famous inventor, novelist, artist or musician. Breakfast was excellent and all staff members were very friendly. The hotel is a five minute drive from town. We would happily stay here again.
Review 43:Although it is a nice hotel overall, it could definitely do with a bit of a revamp. The room was fine for what myself and my partner were looking for, but it was shabby in places. New curtains, linens and duvets, and better mattresses would give the rooms a needed boost. The location isn't fantastic, but the walk into the city centre was manageable. We did end up spending more n taxis than we might have had we chosen somewhere more central.
Review 44:The staff were lovely, particularly those we deal with at reception. The ensuite bathroom was lovely, the power shower was particularly good. Zak's restaurant was bright, airy, and served great food. Breakfast was varied, tasty, and the service was great. The hotel has the potential to be one of the best in Waterford, with a few changes here and there.
Review 45:Nothing
Review 46:loved the location the hotel itself is beautiful. The staff were all without exception lovely, friendly and welcoming.............all Irish which makes a change. Well done to all.
Review 47:Our room (103). You have to take the elevator down to get there so you almost feel a bit underground and sort of look up to the lawn. The decor was very dated in this room, not historic, which would have been lovely, but, maybe late 50's. The bed was very uncomfortable and the linens were very worn and tired. The sheets were paper thin and the blanket, a sort of nubby acrylic, had seen better days as well...
Review 48:The fresh flowers placed throughout the main floor were lovely and smelled wonderful. There is an air of simple elegance as you enter the lobby. The staff was very nice and helpful. Breakfast was good and the view from the dining room was very pretty. The sitting room was a nice place to relax.
Review 49:The rooms were a bit hot no air conditioning. The meals were also expensive but very good.
Review 50:The staff were very friendly and attentive. I would certainly stay here again.
Review 51:wasn't really impressed with a la carte breakfast menu! the fish was just a small piece pan fried on a large slice dry soda bread!
Review 52:quite and no noises from traffic! nice decor inside ! Dinner in restaurant was really nice!
Review 53:Hotel is very very quite at night. Bar is tiny. Everyone was gone from restaurant and bar just after 10.00 pm. good if u want really early nights. Also could they please have the very large pot holes leading up to the hotel repaired... ????
Review 54:The staff are sooo nice . Very friendly. Couldn't do enough for u. Beds are comfortable and food good.
Review 55:We arrived late from Clonmel after accident with nothing but two helmets and a hospital bag of clothes. The receptionist was pleasant and more than helpful. thank you
Review 56:Really sorry to have to say this but the cleaning of the room needs to be looked at . we looked for an upper room but can accept it wasent possible under the circumstances. The first room we were shown was basement and we didnt like the odur in the room. Also there were many cobwebs and a lot of dust on the light switches , lamp shades and the top of the headboard. The second room we were shown was on ground floor level (208) this was much better but also needed to be dusted properly , The bathroom window needs repairing also , I dont mean any badness whatsoever in leaving these comments as i Love this hotel and visit as often as i can :)
Review 57:The Hotel as always was Lovely , staff from reception to dining room to kitchen were as always really Lovely. A special mention for the lady on reception who supplied us with toothpaste of her own , we were Very gratefull. special mention also for the Lovely Lady in the dining room she always remembers us and is so lovely Always. ,looking Great after her spinners :) :)
Review 58:Our bedroom was rather hot, but that may have been down to the weather.
Review 59:The hotel location and facilities were excellent. The staff efficient and friendly. The building itself was beautiful and very tastefully updated.
Review 60:Room was a little warm the first night. Also, our GPS took us to the wrong location.
Review 61:The view and breakfast and dinner were very good. The staff were very friendly.
Review 62:Like most Irish hotels the coffee is not good. A proper coffee machine and a trained barista would make such a difference.
Review 63:Peace and quiet, friendly helpful staff, with time to talk to customers.
Review 64:The rooms were not serviced before 3pm, that was uncomfortable for us. The television was small and had very little programming to entertain us, only sporting events. The breakfast buffet was limited. The bedding ie the mattress and pillows were tired and the linen grey.
Review 65:Reception was very helpful and the staff were friendly and solicitous.the decor was elegant and the dining room was bright and attractive, fresh flowers everywhere were welcoming. The restaurant food was excellent
Review 66:From our late arrival to looking through the rubbish for misplaced euros, Stan was amazing! He accommodated our group of 8 with a cheery demeanor & kept the bar open for us to enjoy a nightcap. He was very informative & helpful in planning our continuing journey through beautiful Ireland.
Review 67:Size of Room, Lovely En-Suite, comfortable bed and generous Breakfast. Also the extra gesture of fruit and chocolates in our room was a lovely touch. The staff were very helpful and pleasant also.
Review 68:The overall appearance of our room was great, except for a few scuff marks and minor marks on the walls.
Review 69:The charm and ambience of this property was wonderful. The bed was very comfortable and our room looked out over the grounds, very relaxing. For us, this was just a one night stay toward the end of a long trip, but we loved this accommodation and wished we had more time here.
Review 70:We had seen that the Quite Man was filmed in the area and ask the people at the desk about the location. We were given great directions to the town where the shoot took place in the 50th. The grounds and hotel are in a fantastic locations and very clean.
Review 71:tv in the room was very small
Review 72:i told the hotel that we were celebrating a birthday and they went above and beyond to help make our weekend special, chocolates and fruit in the room, staff wished happy birthday personally was very lovely.
Review 73:Shame the room had no fridge. Parts of the hotel look a little "tired" but mostly was very good.
Review 74:The room was spacious and comfortable with armchairs to relax in. The free WiFi was fast and reliable. The restaurant is elegant, the food very good and the westerly facing terrace is great for a pre-dinner G&T.
Review 75:stains on blanket, hair on sheet, marks on walls,no milk with tea in the room, curtains ripped, toilet doesn't flush great, cobwebs in bathroom,no one at reception in the evening or night mini fridge was plugged in but wasn't working, telly very small, no beans with full irish breakfast, dinner prices very high found two members of staff very rude plus booked smoking room & then was told couldn't smoke in room
Review 76:girl at reception in the morning & girls taking breakfast orders very friendly inside & outside of hotel very nice lovely view
Review 77:Felt room need some refurbishment (painting etc) though colour scheme. TV in room tiny!
Review 78:Breakfast was excellent with very good choice, staff were lovely and very friendly, bathroom lovely and bright. Bar really nice for relaxing.
Review 79:Found big bedspread hard to handle ,it was far too heavy to sleep under and it was too warm anyway. The colour scheme also a bit daunting, far too mush purple.Lighting not good, could not see into wardrobe.
Review 80:Very quiet, peaceful location, but not out of the way.Nice view out of the window.Bathroom spacious and well appointed.Nice restaurant, excellent breakfast,.
Review 81:Worn Out Bed Linen, Very Thin with Small Amount Of Staining. Bed Spread Was Badly Stained With Either, Tea/Coffee Or Possibly Blood. This Was Replaced On Request, Replacement Was Clean But Still Had Wine Staining. Banging Doors When Guests Entering/ Leaving Rooms. Driveway Upto Hotel Needs Major Repairs. Numerious Pot Holes.
Review 82:Excellent Friendly Staff Excellent Breakfast Modern internal Looking Hotel Excellent Leisure Area Excellent Dining Area Lovely Gardens
Review 83:Tired rooms. Very dark and a bit tired. The towels were very frayed, the bedspread was stained and the curtains frayed around the edges. Lack of attention to detail - dead flowers on the tables, Dirty plate at dinner, small things that are noticed.
Review 84:Nice food
Review 85:The room was cold, to the point I was kept awake. The radiator is too smal for the room or the heating water temperature is too low
Review 86:Room size and layout, bathroom and shower excellent
Review 87:Moth holes in sheets, and flying around bedroom on first night. Thick dust on lampshades and around floor. Nest of moths disturbed by hair dryer the next day. Moved room but not one word of apology, even at departure. No compensation, unless one considers an orange, two apples, a banana and one strawberry ample compensation for having slept in a moth and dust invested room !
Review 88:The restaurant staff.
Review 89:Personal touch, excellent service, staff used our names when greeting and serving, a refreshing change! a lovely place to escape for a romantic break, beautiful individual rooms.
Review 90:While there was a lovely room off the bar it was very full and we had no where to enjoy a drink after dinner, which, by the way was absolutely delicious, as was all the food.
Review 91:Zak's restaurant was wonderful
Review 92:The bed was a little uncomfortable. my room seemed to be over the kitchen and the extractor was noisy.
Review 93:Location and beautiful view from room over river towards the town. The restaurant food was wonderful, and the staff very friendly.
Review 94:Signage to the hotel on the main road would be helpful. We had a couple of issues with our room but these were dealt with efficiently and we were very generously compensated.
Review 95:The restaurant has an excellent kitchen, is very good value, and is a lovely elegant room with a beautiful view across the river to Waterford. All the public rooms are extremely pleasant and there are attractive facilities outside. The staff and service are very friendly and efficient.
Review 96:If you wanted the night life you would need to take a taxi. But taxis weren't expensive.
Review 97:very good breakfast. Lovely staff. Very quiet and relaxing. The walk into the city was very refreshing.
Review 98:The furniture in the rooms is old and worn out The linens are old and abused..should be replaced with NEW linens The towels are old ..some have even changed colour and are unravelling The pillows are so old they dont fluff up The TV in the Room is too small.. u have to sit close to it to enjoy a program.. When guests leave .. the room doors are left wide open while cleaning staff ..clean.. so i would walk down the hallway and pass a minimum of 4 open doors of messy rooms These should be addressed.. this is not a 4 star hotel... i found that misleading
Review 99:Location..views..hotel staff friendliness
Review 100:Our room was very dusty and poorly clean I will give a bit of more attention to those detail that dident put me off the hotel but did annoied me when I got to the room tick coat of dust in every corner and web all around
Review 101:Love the staff the food and the location very nice dining room and bar and the room as well
Review 102:Room too warm Uncomtable seating in lounge area Need to get taxi into town at night too far to walk
Review 103:Excellent food in retaurant Comfortable bed Very clean Room cleaned on Sunday and bank holiday Very quite at night
Review 104:Badly lit road to hotel - if we hadn't visited before we might have missed the turn
Review 105:Late arrival catered for sandwiches and hot drinks on arrival - after midnight!
Review 106:The first bedroom was dirty, the furniture was worn and dirty, arm rests on chair were shiny from dirt the sheets on the bed were stained and threadbare. We were moved to a suite which was a bit better but not four star standard. The shower tray filled with water when taking a shower
Review 107:The breakfast was good and the dining room was clean
Review 108:I found the beds were very lumpy and lacking in support which as I have back problems therefore did not give me a good night's sleep and rather spoiled the stay for me.
Review 109:The hotel was very attractive with a beautiful dining room and delicious food. The whole ambience was of a more expensive hotel and the rooms were really spacious
Review 110:On arrival, we had the friendliest reception. The house itself is an old manor house however, the rooms were modern and comfortable with a splash of purple throughout the hotel. Great view of the river
Review 111:Peacefull quiet location within a few minutes drive of Belview Port. Good rooms and excellent staff. There is a good view from between the trees across river to Waterford city There is an atmosphere which will draw you back
Review 112:Stained, old, and worn bedspread. Well worn bed linen. Stained carpet Stained dressing table Damaged bedside light shade. Loose toilet seat Air fresheners used to mask smell. View onto the lower wall of the car park TV tiny Had to be relocated to a room next door which was just marginally better. Overall impression of dark and dingy rooms on the lower ground floor.
Review 113:Location Grounds Room was warm. Reception staff helpful.
Review 114:Guests next door seem to have left a lively three year old and an infant in their room whilst they enjoyed their evening so we suffered screams and banging doors instead of a peaceful night.
Review 115:Lovely view from bedroom and really big bed
Review 116:All was fine so nothing to mention here.
Review 117:Staff were so friendly, polite and helpful. The room was spacious and inviting with a very plush ensuite bathroom. The evening meal in the restaurant was scrumptious as was the breakfast in the morning. Very happy - thank you!
Review 118:Management need to check the rooms from time to time. beds very poor condition and lots of marks on walls. Blanket on bed had stain on it which house keeping should have picked up and removed. would not stop there again.
Review 119:Meals good
Review 120:The bathrooms need a bit of attention. Around the bath could be a little bit cleaner. Rooms very hot at night.
Review 121:It was a very pleasant stay. Quite, no noisy children.lol. It was close to the town. I will give it an 8.0 over all.
Review 122:Can't think of anything.
Review 123:General ambience. Beautiful building. Quiet location yet a few minutes across the river from Waterford. staff exceptionally welcoming and quietly efficient.
Review 124:Very thick dust around and under bed. Room walls and serviceable furniture need sugar-soap wash to remove stains, scuffs and splash marks. Bathroom tiling requires joint sealing and grouting where repaired. The bed was at least 10 years old and long past it's serviceable life. Sheets likewise. Furniture while poor quality stand alone units are with a good clean still serviceable. The TV has a very limited amount of channels and is absolutely tiny. Breakfast is unacceptable. No care and attention given to the preparation of the cooked breakfast. I flavour of very average supermarket yogurt.
Review 125:The anticipation. Excellent front of house staff 5* Operable windows. Good In room open wifi.
Review 126:The the bed and bedding need to be updated. The bed and the pillows were extremely hard and we didn't have the most comfortable sleep.
Review 127:The hotel staff was extremely helpful. The hotel was beautifully decorated with nice garden. The restaurant was outstanding. Our room was comfortable and spacious enough.
Review 128:Our room was on the lower floor and needed a good dusting. It was large but the mattress was very old and flat. The TV was very small.
Review 129:Public spaces of this hotel was beautiful. Very old historic home. The restaurant food was fabulous as was the service.
Review 130:Loved the friendly welcome & assistance on arrival. Room was comfy & clean. Bar prices excellent & food was very nice... Deserts were scrumptious! Bit far away from being able to walk to pubs or city centre but in a pretty setting.
Review 131:Bed was a little uncomfortable. I have a back problem and need a bed with good support.
Review 132:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Food was good and room comfortable. Also good for elderly folks.
Review 133:Only the fact that we never got to see our bedroom! We would be confident that the upstairs facilities would be of the same luxurious quality that we saw downstairs.
Review 134:When we arrived there was an electrical problem and no room for us. So we were instantly offered another, more central hotel and a fabulous free lunch. We met several staff from the Manager down and they could not have been kinder or more polite. The hotel is in superb grounds which appear as a surprise oasis in an otherwise unbeguiling locality.
Review 135:The upholstery needs refreshing. The curtains (Room 402) could do with being replaced, but its only a small thing !
Review 136:The staff in the hotel are all really nice. The food, both dinner and breakfast is excellent. Its very relaxing and quiet. Room a good size and great ensuite.
Review 137:This elegant home has been lovingly restored by the Power family. The location is sublime, it sits across the river from the Waterford port and not only has a great view of the city it is in an extremely quiet setting. My room was large and exquisite with the library right outside my door. Stan and Kelly were incredibly lovely and helpful and I felt lucky to be staying at their wonderful home.
