Reviews for Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Resort

Review 1:Our bedroom was damp and had lots of mould. The wall paper was pealing off the walls of our room and out in the corridor. the bed clothes were torn and so were the curtains. Neither of us enjoyed our breakfast.

Review 2:Staff are very friendly and Helpful. The antique Bathrooms, the large fire in the foyer, the bar, the munster room were all lovely. The grounds are nice if you get the weather.

Review 3:bath / shower was a little difficult to manage in and out of so need to check when booking if there is an alternative set up

Review 4:location staff, & food were all excellent. Loads of walking available

Review 5:We found the rooms v hot ( as did the 2 other families we went with who had other lodges) but we realise we could have sorted this if we'd asked reception for advice! Shame we weren't allowed to use the beautiful hotel when functions on there.

Review 6:Fantastic lodge - very comfortable beds

Review 7:Unfortunately the lack of choices the channels on the TV were not to exciting for a relaxing night in. Also it may help to check the salt & peepers in the lodges as ours looked like that never been fiiled.

Review 8:On arrival we meet Linda at the reception who is more than accommodating with her friendly service, we were exceptionally happy with the size and comfort of the lodge, Continental breakfast was outstanding with the quality of food and also the service. Linda was on reception once again and gave us a mini tour with lot and stories within castle which was grand, meet one of the other workers upstairs who was who was refreshing the master suite so were lucky enough to have a look around there and he also was also very informative with his information and service. Overall you could tell the castle was a very happy family working environment which was great to see and feel.

Review 9:A most comfortable place to stay!! Away from all the hustle & bustle of the city, but yet 10 mins from the heart of Waterford. Very friendly staff means a lot!!

Review 10:The food in the golf club was just mediocre. Needs improvement. You are better off getting the ferry across and going elsewhere. The heating in the house was tricky to operate in order to adjust the temperature. Not obvious where the thermostat is situated, although there are some printed instructions left out for guests. Maybe reception could just talk through little things like this with guests.

Review 11:The house was lovely, modern and well equipped and it was a bonus that we were allowed to bring our two dogs. Staff are really nice and helpful. The hotel/castle is stunning. The restaurant was unavailable the first night due to the fact they were hosting a private function but we were informed of this prior to our visit. We visited the bar on the second night and it had a great buzz of people around and a lovely atmosphere. The ferry was 24/7, a fast service and not too far from shops and restaurants. There's a few beaches nearby worth visiting as well. All in all I would recommend this place for families of all ages.

Review 12:We loved the unique location, and as we stayed in a lodge we had modern amenities and design as well as the use of the grand surroundings of the castle. The lodge was warm and comfortable. Kids loved the deer in the back garden.

Review 13:We had dinner booked in the hotel but our house was quite a distance away. There was no shuttle bus to getvus to or from the hotel!

Review 14:House very v omfortablw and well equipped.setting beautiful.

Review 15:No leisure facilities

Review 16:Fire was lighting in our apartment upon arrival. Everything was so clean and cosy. Would definitely recommend it for a group of friends/ family. Great value for money too

Review 17:Unfortunately there was wedding at the time of our stay, so we could not use the hotel. Fair to the hotel they contacted us to warn about restrictions. But still it did affect our stay.

Review 18:The house was nice and Cousy as staff had switched on the fireplace for us. That was very nice touch

Review 19:no leisure centre or facilities for older children like zip wire adventures which are a big hit in Cork and Kilkenny

Review 20:nice relaxing location different from your usual hotel break

Review 21:Posibly needed bit more equipment in kitchen, ie: baking tray for oven but only minor things!. Gas fire in lounge probably needs redesign due to how hot the glass gets but if families are being carefull its ok or dont turn it on!. These are minor points and wouldnt stop are return!

Review 22:Lovely Castle & beautifull grounds, freindly staff & great lodges

Review 23:nothing

Review 24:We stayed in one of the graden Lodges and it was just fantastic. The Houses are large, equipped with a high-level of standard and the location is just great.

Review 25:Not told when booking that food was only served until 8pm in the Golf Club. We arrived at 7.30, half an hour later than booked (due to a minor mishap enroute) and were told at 7.45 that the food was only available until 8, we were asked to pay once we ordered our six steaks and were then told we couldn't choose from the dessert menu as (at 7.50 pm) the dessert chef had left. We felt the whole meal was rushed, the waitress started hovering around us and at 10pm asked us to leave (mid bottle of wine which we had paid for) as "she had already worked two hours overtime to accommodate us and "wouldn't we enjoy our wine more back at the Lodges". I was most embarrassed as I had arranged the weekend for my friends (in honour of my husbands 40th birthday). After spending a lot of money in one establishment for the night away with dinner, I can't say that I would recommend this to my friends.

Review 26:The location, the island, the deer.

Review 27:Everything was great.

Review 28:The location was perfect to get onto the ferry. The owner was so friendly and helpful. The bed was so comfortable and the room was cosy. The owner woke up early to make us breakfast before we had to get onto the ferry.

Review 29:We enjoyed the experience of the little ferry, the castle was quite atmospheric, the staff very obliging and our suite the Wedgwood was very comfortable. of the two other hotels we stayed, the Park Kenmare, and the Ballymalo, we found the dinner provided by yourselves was more enjoyable than we experienced with the others.

Review 30:We loved the warm decor and feeling throughout the Castle. The grounds are fabulous and the very regular ferry to and fro adds to the intrigue and tranquility of it all. We had a fabulous fine dining meal with amazing flavours served in the conservatory to our large group.

Review 31:Lodge had a big crack in the master bedroom ceiling. Completely self catering, no soap or shampoo in the lodges.

Review 32:The staff are lovely and very helpful. We enjoyed the afternoon tea experience.

Review 33:We booked dinner at the Golf Course in advance. However when we were just about starting our meal a golf presentation took place all around us which lasted about 30 minutes and was very loud. It was difficult for us to speak to each other over dinner and people were standing right behind my chair taking photographs.

Review 34:The Castle was absolutely beautiful, the smell of the open fire in the reception area was gorgeous. We stayed in a holiday home which was extremely modern, spacious and with very comfortable bedrooms/bathrooms. Being on an island also made it an adventure for my daughter.

Review 35:Lodge inside could do with some fresh paint. Lots of dirty marks on walls and chipped paint on staircase wall. No lights worked in the entrance into the hall and up the staircase and in down stairs toilet spot lights hanging by the wires from ceiling and didn't work. No tea towel. Wifi was very poor also.

Review 36:The castle is beautiful and surrounding scenery is picturesque. The lodge is very well laid out and had nearly all that was required. The beds very comfortable and duck down duvets were so cosy.

Review 37:Only one negative - pull out sofa bed in our lodge could not be used as the mattress was in terrible condition..stained in a number of places - it should be replaced asap

Review 38:Really enjoyed the uniqueness of the location. Beautiful scenery, golf course and proximity to city and beaches. Great that the ferry service is 24 hrs and very frequent.

Review 39:Didn't feel it was fair to charge €5 per night electric and gas. It's pricey enough. We were there for 3 nights and were charged four €5 so €20 in total and we ate out for all meals except breakfast and didn't use heating. They should do a breakfast in the clubhouse . Missed having somewhere nice to have breakfast besides the castle which finishes breakfast at 10.30

Review 40:Castle is beautiful and lovely for a drink in the evening. We stayed in a lodge. Very nice and clean but could do with lick of paint. Very modern. We had a dog with us so it was great. Would go again.

Review 41:Walks too short. Tennis court surface needs upgrade. Spa facilities would add to experience.

Review 42:We were very lucky with the weather. Great for golf and walks. Good golf practice facilities. Self catering houses suited to adult group. Lovely meal in Castle restaurant. Staff very pleasant. Liked ferry experience to get on and off the island.

Review 43:The golf club lunch experience was some what disappointing although staff were excellent. It was a little down market compared to the rest of the experience.

Review 44:The charm and elegance of the Baronial hall and the surrounding gardens. The lodge area was very safe and private for children. The staff were helpful, friendly and efficient.

Review 45:Wifi access was very bad in the lodge we had. Reliable high speed Wifi is something you assume to be offered at a premises as Waterford Castle and lodges. No heating device in the lodge.

Review 46:The are, the lodge location. Further we enjoyed breakfast and dinner at the castle.

Review 47:The Internet was very patchy but hey who needs the Internet when you have surroundings such as these!

Review 48:We stayed in a lodge which was extremely spacious, clean and had everything you could need. We dined each night in the restaurant which was fabulous. A suggestion might be to offer a different chef's dish each night since after 4 nights dining we had nothing new to try from the menu that suited us. The staff and service were amazing, Thank you Waterford Castle.

Review 49:This was the best self-catering accommodation we have ever experienced. the children were delighted to have ensuite facilities. The house was extremely clean and we enjoyed some sightseeing as well as days relaxing. A lovely holiday.

Review 50:The matress could have been better.

Review 51:The Castle is elegant although the rooms could use a little sprucing up. We were shown to our room, The Rose Suite and pleasantly surprised to find a suite with a huge bedroom and a separate sitting room. Needed some extra towels and they were there withing 2 minutes. Although you need to go across a car ferry that runsevery 15 minutes to get off the island (yes it is on an island) we found places to eat in town

Review 52:There is no pool/leisure centre on site. Also, on our last night, we had a meal in the club house and after a slight accident with the delivery of our drinks order (hubby was swimming in beer & wine), we felt we should have got at least a drink on the house (and not poor hubby) but no. That left a bad taste.

Review 53:Great lodge and stop off point for exporing the rest of Waterford

Review 54:No phone in the individual lodges is not great, but manageable.

Review 55:The kids loved the small park with the slack line. Also, wild deer can be spotted within a short walk behind the lodges.

Review 56:Had trouble with the locks, if there had been a fire we wouldn't have gotten out. No phone from the lodge to the front desk to ask for assistance.

Review 57:We stayed in the self catering lodges and each had oue own room and bath. Location great for side trip to a Ardmore. Staff ver friendly.

Review 58:House a wee bit dusty

Review 59:Location brilliant, Staff Great, Houses great and big, a little tired but renovations happening. Location of the playground was great for our two boys

Review 60:One of the receptionists was awful. There was no doorman or someone to help you with your luggage. There was no fresh air in the rooms- you could not open the windows.

Review 61:Beautiful castle, great food, lovely grounds. It only has 19 rooms so it's nice and small with not too many people around.

Review 62:We stayed at the golf villa. It was well equipped and large enough to comfortable sleep all 6 of us. Internet service was very good. Accommodations were modern and clean

Review 63:The restaurant in the hotel was booked out on two of the three nights that we stayed on the island. We were quite happy to eat in the bar and we also went to the golf club. Unfortunately the bar in the hotel stops serving food at 6.30pm (and the menu is very limited). The restaurant in the golf club is not very comfortable (or welcoming - it feels like a place that is exclusively for the use of golf club members) and it stops serving food at 8pm.

Review 64:The quality of the accommodation (self-catering lodges) was excellent. Very clean and comfortable. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant and the food was truly excellent. We all really enjoyed the meal. There was a child in our party and we were pleased that there was a menu for children. The receptionists were very helpful and welcoming.

Review 65:Wait staff in bar might need a bit of training

Review 66:Stayed in the castle - neat to be in 500 year old building! Excellent reception - couldn't have been nicer!

Review 67:The only thing I could say was the wifi wasn't great in the lodge but we were in one of the furthest lodge away from the castle. Other than that everything else was great.

Review 68:From the minute we arrived to the second we left, we were treated like royalty. They couldn't do enough for us. 7 of us stayed in a lodge which was so luxurious. Had dinner in the castle and it was amazing. Felt like we were really treating ourselves and at a reasonable price. Had breakfast the following morning and really topped off our experience in an amazing way. Thank you all:)

Review 69:Only had 1 night there .... Should have had more!

Review 70:3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms Lots of space Fireplace Lovely grounds The main house (it's a castle...)

Review 71:Staff was so friendly and helpful. Castle was well kept and elegant setting. Loved the claw foot tub! We went on to Dublin for a business affair and told everyone how great the island stay was at the Waterford castle.

Review 72:To feel at home and to be staying in such beautiful castle steeped in Irish History. I would like to especially mention Derek who took care of us from the moment we arrived and gave us excellent advice on best local attractions to visit.

Review 73:Waterford castle and resort is a special place, the accommodation was modern and was well equiped. A lovely warm fire to welcome us was a lovely touch. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The island is a great place to get away from it all. The ferry over was a great novelty for the kids. Dinner at the castle was lovely and the children were welcome and breakfast was top notch. Will definitely come again!

Review 74:This was the 4th time that we have stayed in the Chalets and every holiday has been fantastic, there has been nothing that we have not liked.

Review 75:The amenities, the location the whole experience !

Review 76:The heating was a bit too strong in the lodge, there was no complementary tea/ coffee which would have been welcomed.

Review 77:The castle is very well maintained, the lodges are very comfortable and the surroundings are beautiful, very relaxing.

Review 78:Would suggest booking dinner early. Due to low season barfood was only available til 7pm & clubhouse closed @ 5pm. Main restaurant was not available due to a wedding. Journey to centre of Waterford a good 7-10min drive.

Review 79:Lodges are amazing - very art decco! Exterior of lodges could do with an upgrade however interior more than makes up for it. Main hotel only cpl of mins walk from lodges. Ferry runs 24hours.

Review 80:Having to leave the next day.

Review 81:The ferry, grounds, castle, lodges, food, wedding entertainment venue, attentive and friendly staff, open fire and much more. The rookery at dusk was also impressive.

Review 82:The fact we were unable to enjoy the castle. It was the reason we booked it! We had an American guest with us and we wanted her to enjoy the whole castle experience. Disappointing!

Review 83:We stayed in one of the lodges and eventhough we booked three mths in advance we couldn't get a booking for dinner either of the two nights in the castle. Also we had no access to the castle from mid day on the Saturday until mid day Sunday because of a wedding. We were not aware of this when we had made our booking.

Review 84:Only one T. V per lodge. Only relevant if you have young kids and staying for a week. Would be so handy to have a second Tv or DVD player.

Review 85:Peace and quiet. Spaciousness of lodges

Review 86:The lodge was very hot for the whole night. Fire was lit when we arrived which was lovely but although we turned it off at 6 we needed the windows open for the rest of the night. This will be a huge bonus in winter but if its not particularly cold you will need to turn it off on your arrival!

Review 87:Laid back atmosphere. Even tho we were a few minutes late for afternoon tea reservation, we were not rushed or made feel bad for being late. Lodges were spacious and finished to a high standard.

Review 88:Nothing....!!!

Review 89:We liked the homely peaceful, away from it all feel.. The trip across on the ferry made it feel really like you were getting away from it all.. It was the kind of place that made you feel like you didn't want to leave .. We didn't get to spend nearly enough time appreciating it ... The offers available are reasonable and we might even consider staying again .. we are even considering starting a social club.. Following our very restful hassle free but way too brief stay in Waterord Castle resort and Golf club... A real escape from it all kind of place ... Thank you to the friendly staff who helped make it so lovely and welcoming... Mc mc 1

Review 90:If you require an evening meal in the hotel make sure you book in advance, as the dining room can book out quickly.

Review 91:Beautiful location, quiet, wild deer strolling around, self catering house was superb and very spacious, playgound for the kids, club house for casual dining with kids, wonderful golf course.

Review 92:wasn't spotless but acceptably clean,Some maintenance issues-couldn't open balcony upstairs, couldn't switch on gas fire, paintwork could do with freshening up ,no wi-fi,

Review 93:Lodges-great value for money 1 night 6-8 people -200euro...lodges are spacious, very modern, luxurious and have absolutely everything you would need -place with great layout/design,the perfect for a party

Review 94:Kitchen was poorly equipped. There was no coffee maker but the front desk receptionist went out of her way to get us a coffee press. The toaster didn't work, but the handyman promptly brought us a new one. Kitchen pots and pans were very scarce, we didn't cook dinner there and no sharp knife available

Review 95:Liked the setting, very relaxed after a busy 3 days in Dublin. Grounds were lovely for walking, wish we had more time, were only there for 2 nights, one full day which was spent walking around island in morning and visiting Waterford in the afternoon. Front desk receptionist was wonderful, went out of her way to help us. We forgot to buy salad dressing and she got some for us from the dining room.

Review 96:Nothing

Review 97:Had a wonderful d Stay at the castle. Dinner was fantastic, best food we had on our 7 day stay in Ireland. Breakfast was also fantastic. The accommodation was pricy but good value. Highly recommend.

Review 98:mix up over timing of breakfast so we had brunch instead, would like to see a swimming pool/spa/leisure complex there

Review 99:the location, staff were very helpful, the evening meal at the hotel was delicious and the service and attention of the staff could not be faulted, lunch at the golf club was excellent value and good food, lodges were well equipped, nothing was too much for the staff.

Review 100:Catering equipment very poor. They're were no chopping boards, nocolander or salad bowls. It needed more basic kitchen utensil..We boughttwo bowls as we had people for dinner. Also needs ice trays. There wasno ice facility at all.

Review 101:Loved everything about the lodges and the Castle Hotel...An excellentplace to stay!

Review 102:The restaurant food was a bit disappointing. Menu reads well but felt it was more style over substance. (There is a bar menu but cannot comment)

Review 103:Opulence! Beautiful room, huge bed and a wonderful roll top bath with all the best toiletries provided. Excellent breakfast. Only thing missing was the Champagne!

Review 104:Some maintenance issues with the heating system, did not get enough hot water.

Review 105:The ability to have our whole family stay in one place and cook meals. We should have done multiple days to take advantage of the all the things to do at he castle and on the grounds.

Review 106:The staff were extremely helpful and cheerful. The atmosphere is fabulous. The lodges are prepared to a very high standard. The facilities are wonderful. Overall a great location for a family holiday or a romantic getaway :)

Review 107:We had also been informed that the golf clubhouse would be open for food/drinks etc. However, this was not the case. The golf lodge was beautiful - spacious and clean but we had no supplies with us. A trip back into Waterford for pizza and drinks was not what we had anticipated. We had a lovely morning - food at last and a walk around the lovely grounds. Check amenities before booking.

Review 108:We had been informed that there was a private function on and the castle itself would be off limits for 24 hours. No problem there.

Review 109:If one was to suggest one thing that was not up to satisfaction it would be that the leather couch is not that comfortable. But to be honest that is just grasping at straws as one could not fault the whole experience at all.

Review 110:Loved the fact you were on your own island had the luxury of been closed off from the city life. Yet not to far of a drive to town, tramore etc. you also had the option to eat on the castle, golf resort or bring your own food as the cabins are fully equipped with all the essentials needed to cook your own meals. The small park for the children and the relaxing walks one can take with the children on the grounds.

Review 111:Charge 5 euro for the ferry (should be included in room rate - feels like it's "money grabbing" when done this way). Breakfast was lovely, though it wasn't explained to us when we sat down how it worked and therefore lead to confusion. Distance to the city felt a little misleading. Though probably as the crow flies it's not far, it is too awkward and far to just pop into town for a stroll. We were there during very hot weather and would love to have had an electric fan to cool the room a little. Wished there was somewhere to have a little spa treatment (even just a manicure). When chilling so much and so far from town, it seemed a pity not to offer the facility.

Review 112:Staff were fantastic (especially the lovely woman on the front desk) Cocktails were yummy Rooms were so pretty and lovely Location was gorgeous Golf club nearby really nice and welcoming

Review 113:Outside of houses were a little weather beaten.the park could be a little more updated.and paintwork inside of houses needed redoing.

Review 114:Location suited us as it was near all facilities but it was quiet and safe for small kids.houses were well furnished and good quality appliances. Staff in castle were friendly and helpful.

Review 115:No pool. Lodge poorly equipped for self catering, had no kettle, chopping board or corkscrew. Complaints not dealt with, requested a kettle twice and never received one, asked for a corkscrew and told to bring bottle to Castle to open. Clubhouse not aware of meal deal in newsletter. Food overpriced in Castle for the quality served. Charge for car ferry.

Review 116:The retreat of the island location is idylic. The lodges were very modern and clean. The driving range is a great facility. Club house food was good.

Review 117:The signature basil and orange shampoo might be lovely for some but seemed to be shampooing with salad. Also wish there was a spa.

Review 118:Crossing the island ferry (drive your car on, it's free and runs every 15 minutes), you arrive at a charming sanctuary. Beautifully decorated, exquisite food, it is all that you dream a castle should be.

Review 119:Loved the dinner and staff. Enjoyed the grounds and lovely walking trail with sounds of quail and a huge rabbit sighting to boot. Comfortable and plenty of room for all 5 of us. Great kitchen and facilities in the cottage. Lovely stay!

Review 120:stayed here in one of the lodges with wife and 4 children for a wedding. lodges are very big and comfortable. definitely recommend it

Review 121:Lack of real fires in bar area and resturant area.

Review 122:Food excellent, location excellent.

Review 123:The house was beautiful and staff very nice

Review 124:Paying extra fixed charge for heat/electricity. But rate was reasonable.

Review 125:Large warm houses to high standard. Beautiful location. Friendly.

Review 126:Location was fab, beautiful and spacious apartment with great facilities and extremely helpful staff. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Review 127:Damp in walls uf top-floor room

Review 128:Food, Service, Location

Review 129:It was a little odd to be charged extra for gas and electricity...

Review 130:great location

Review 131:Only negative is the lack of a swimming pool / leisure centre

Review 132:Self catering houses were excellent

Review 133:Romantic location
