Reviews for Abbeyglen Castle Hotel

Review 1:Brian the hotelier/proprietor was exceptional. Informative, entertaining and took real, genuine interest in where you were from. Could not rate his hospitality more highly. Food was fantastic, real shame we couldn't have stayed longer than 1 night. Will definitely be back.

Review 2:It is quite a trip to get to location to stay just one night, Would stay longer next time.

Review 3:It was magic from the moment upon entering the grounds. We loved our room and enjoyed the Champaign welcome of drinks. Breakfast the best ever.

Review 4:I understand that the castle has been there for many years so the furniture and decor is going to be somewhat old fashioned, however I think it could do with some modern twists here and there to bring the place back to life.

Review 5:The dining experience at the hotel, the friendliness of the staff, the view from the castle, the room we stayed in was very spacious.

Review 6:The rooms were warm and cozy . The staff was great fun and we were treated like v.i.p.'s. We had a beautiful hike around the grounds . Well worth it.

Review 7:the spa/sauna area was not very nice, not sure when the spa had last been cleaned; conflicting info re tipping and whether the staff actually received a portion of the mandatory tip allocation, confusing info re menu selection and additional charges

Review 8:private view from the room into the nicely landscaped back grounds, champagne get acquainted hour with stories and piano playing

Review 9:i cant say there was anything we disliked. We were so grateful to be there. Nothing is perfect in life, but our stay was perfect!

Review 10:My best friend and I instantly felt very comfortable from the time we arrived to the time we left. We felt so sad to leave It was an absolute pleasure meeting the staff and the owners. Very hospitable, professional and warm. Whomever he chef is, they prepared spectacular entrees. The part we loved the most is that the castle was designed as close to the times it was built. We felt like it was a castle and not a hotel. The spa services were excellent as well. It's been a long time to be able to say that I / we received exemplary service all the way around. I don't remember everyone's name. However John and Daniel come to mind. They were very kind and couldn't do enough to make our stay perfect. We wish to come every year. It was wonderful meeting everyone being able to go to an arts festival which not being from your country we had no idea about and we were happily surprised. The area is so peaceful and the people in the town so kind and helpful. Words are not enough to express how much we enjoyed our time spent there

Review 11:I rated the facility a bit down to an egregious unreasonable rut in narrow set down entry that can grab your tire and wreck your undercarriage. Negligence in my view.

Review 12:Lovely old Irish resort hotel. Great breakfast buffet

Review 13:We really wanted to like this place, but just couldn't. Nothing about the room offered either elegance or comfort. Furniture consisted of four straight-backed wooden chairs and a seedy loveseat that looked like it might have been in the living room of a fraternity house. The arm had a 6" rip with stuffing exposed and we had to put the pillows from the bed on the back in order to sit comfortably. The shower was about 2' square. Staff was aloof and impersonal. We asked for an 8:30 am wakeup call and got a 9:00 am call. Nothing about his place reflected what we would have expected from a "castle" experience. We've been to Holiday Inns that offered more comfort and elegance than this place.

Review 14:The location is good, the bed was comfortable. Clifden is a nice town, if a bit touristy. The area around offers some spectacular scenery, especially if one continues to the west and north around the point.

Review 15:A bit dated, could so with some upgrading.

Review 16:Staff were very helpful and quick to attend to you. The pianist added a Wonderful atmosphere at dinner and in the bar afterward.

Review 17:Amazing atmosphere! First night we got free champagne and information about the surrounding area. The bartender told us a few ghost stories related to the castle. Beautiful bedrooms and landscaping.

Review 18:I don't understand how AA still give 4 stars for a hotel that needs so much redoing. The hotel has not been decorated since, I would say, 1980's. Also that poor bird in that cage in a dark corner of the room :(.

Review 19:The bed!

Review 20:Day 1 - no hot water Poor lighting in room and hallways. Room carpet soiled; room musky; very worn furnishings. Old and dated WiFi only in public areas. The entire facility not as advertised.

Review 21:Good dinner; good location

Review 22:This was the best evening of our Ireland trip. You felt like a family member as everyone was very accommodating. There were several unexpected items (tea time, champagne reception and evening entertainment) that we were unaware of when we booked at this beautiful castle. Have told all our fiends that they must stay here if they ever go to Ireland.

Review 23:We could seldom access the Internet.

Review 24:The location was lovely and very pleasant t. The staff were helpful and courteous. The grounds were lovely and very private. Advice was given as to where to visit in the local and wider areas.

Review 25:Hotel is definitely not 4 star. At the best shabby chic, truthfully - needs urgent facelift! Breakfast rather cold, plates need to be warmed.Evening meal disappointing french fries and mushrooms missing but offered later by maitre d'.

Review 26:Location excellent, Clifden wonderful and hotel staff very good.

Review 27:I loved the talk during the champagne cocktail hour. I loved the warm feeling...the fires in the fireplace, the views from our rooms, and the friendliness of the staff.

Review 28:Free Wifi would be useful and sunshine would be nice....

Review 29:This is one of the best hotels I`ve ever stayed in. The setting, architecture, service, staff and food are faultless.

Review 30:While in the dining room we had a table by the window. The cobwebs that were on the windows was just unbelievable. This was obviously never cleaned or even noticed. Not nice experience

Review 31:location nice and staff nice

Review 32:Would have preferred a cooked to order breakfast rather than the buffet, but you cant everything and place was really excellent and well run operation.

Review 33:Sing a long in the evening Friendly management and staff Location Grounds

Review 34:A step back to better times. Courteous staff, massive rooms with 4-poster beds and period furniture, and an elegant restaurant. Our 6 year old daughter loved the friendly parrot! Made her holiday.

Review 35:I'm sure the castle requires tons of maintenance, but a bit of it has been deferred. Nothing major, and this certainly did not dilute our enjoyment of the property. Our rooms were appropriate to that offered royalty in a castle. We were very satisfied overall, and would certainly recommend the castle to others.

Review 36:Both the evening and breakfast restaurant managers were extremely charming and personable. They took extra effort to see that we were warmly welcomed, even providing us free champagne for our party of six. They decorated our table with American flags when they learned we were from the USA. Both of them strove to make this a memorable experience. The food was an excellent value, but the staff, including the waiters, made it top notch! You will not find a better choice if you want castle accommodations with an attentive staff, particularly in the restaurant.

Review 37:Great location. Great welcome, staff very friendly, really enjoyed free champagne reception & the talk on the history of Clifden . Evening meal was top notch, staff very attentive .

Review 38:There was no wifi in the room. Had to go down stairs which was only a small inconvenience.

Review 39:Friendly people, great atmosphere, wonderful food. Really well located in the district for access to other sights.

Review 40:Bit expensive for two nights at over €400, beds could be bigger considering the rooms are huge.

Review 41:Staff were friendly, some quirky little things about the place. Good breakfast and sandwiches, we didn't eat dinner there. Roger's whiskey collection and banter make the bar a very worthwhile experience. The Spa is a hidden gem, my wife was very impressed.

Review 42:Located 5 minute walk away from the town centre. Great view and lovely place to stay. Breakfast was brilliant. Complimentary afternoon tea and champagne reception before dinner were an unexpected and lovely touch!

Review 43:Although we only stayed one night, the owner took an effort to take care of us and make our honeymoon special. I especially loved soaking in the big cast iron tub!

Review 44:Entertaining owner told history of town and his castle over complimentary champagne in tavern before dinner. Great hospitality here -from peet burning in fireplaces to a pet parrot! Walk into picturesque town, go golfing or ride a Connemara pony by the Oceanside! Great fun place!

Review 45:The room was very hot and there was no room controls. Windows would not open.

Review 46:Friendly staff. Authentic castle experience. Host was helpful. Room was well appointed.

Review 47:The bath tub looked a bit dated and because the shine was gone it looked a little stained. Had to get off the toilet to reach the toilet paper (I'm a normal sized Person :-) )"

Review 48:Very friendly Bar and Restaurant staff, also the young man who greeted us outside and carried our bag into the bedroom. Reception staff efficient but no friendly small talk.

Review 49:Wonderfully comfortable (our room was stunning, fire, four poster bed and huge bathroom) relaxed atmosphere, plentiful supply of excellent food ie complimentary afternoon tea and 'eat as much as you like' breakfast and deserts. We appreciated the 'hands on' personal approach of the owners who were interested in guests and gave advice on local area with a sense of humour.

Review 50:The one thing that made for a complicated travel experience was the lack of wifi. There is a pay-by-use monitor in the sitting room, but it isn't a practical option for travelers hoping to organize outings/research the area (it is a euro for only eight minutes, and the internet isn't particularly speedy). I understand that the hotel is probably trying to create a certain kind of atmosphere, but it limits the options available to travelers, and I found it quite inconvenient. I would recommend the hotel offer wifi to its guests!

Review 51:I really enjoyed all of the extra touches -- the chatty parrot in the lobby, the complimentary tea, scones, and champagne, the live music, the relaxing spaces indoors and outdoors, the beautifully furnished rooms, and the view/scenery. Tip for other travelers -- the food is delicious, but if you want to eat at the hotel, buy a dinner and room package! The a la carte menu is quite expensive otherwise.

Review 52:The hotel needs refurbishment especially the bar areas and the corridors.(Not really four star standard.) We were disappointed that there was no bar food/snacks available from 5pm until our dinner which was at 8pm. there were a few crackers and cheese at 6.30 with a glass of processco.HOWEVER we enjoyed our stay immensely and would recommend it highly.

Review 53:The staff:service was excellent. The atmosphere and food in the dining room for dinner and breakfast was excellent ..Entertainment /singing/pianist in the bar was lively and fun.suitable for all ages.

Review 54:It was not the best value for the money. Could use upgrades throughout. Not the 'castle' experience we were looking for. The wifi did not work in the rooms and was poor throughout. A major inconvenience at times.

Review 55:historic place. fun atmosphere.

Review 56:Nothing i can of think that we didn't like

Review 57:Location was ideal. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent atmosphere and crack in the hotel.

Review 58:Only one very small thing, was disappointed with my seafood chowder. Just salmon in it, lots of it, but no other fish included. Other than that the food was excellent

Review 59:Loved everything about the place, open fires, free WiFi, comfortable superior room, excellent food, champagne pre-dinner tipple with canapes and evening bar entertainment. The staff are really wonderful and such a great asset to this place. We felt so comfortable, relaxed and pampered.

Review 60:There was nothing to fault the hotel on, they were perfect in every way! Our daughter even received a medal for perfect behaviour which chuffed her to bits!

Review 61:This hotel is one of the best hotels that we have ever stayed in. The food was amazing, the staff were extremely helpful and the general atmosphere of the castle was more than we could have ever hoped for! Even though we were the only ones with a young child staying there at the time, we couldn't have had a better reception. There was even live irish music playing and complementary champagne for all visitors. It was very lively with what seemed like a fully packed hotel and great ambience. Even the parrot was friendly!

Review 62:Great warm welcome with fun historical overview of castle. Beautifully appointed bedrooms, spotlessly clean, warm & very tastefully decorated. Delicious food, great service & owner's presence & humour created warmth amongst fellow guests & created a welcoming relaxed atmosphere.

Review 63:Nothing

Review 64:We love this hotel and stay in it anytime we are in Clifden, it is warm and friendly and absolutely beautiful and comfortable. The rooms are huge and spacious and real luxury, staff are really lovely and friendly, would highly recommend this beautiful castle to stay for comfort, value, location, it has it all.

Review 65:we liked everything about the hotel they give us a free upgrade to a superior room.the food was good and the singing in the bar was great craic.great room to sleep in warm and cosy

Review 66:We stumbled upon this place driving through Clifden and were lucky they had an opening that night. Rooms are not posh but really charming and the staff are warm and wonderful as all of the people in Cannemara. Favorite part of our stay there was the champagne reception the evening we stayed where they gave some history of the area, which was very fun and interesting. I only wish we could have stayed there longer.

Review 67:We didn't know about tea until the second day of our stay.

Review 68:Friendliness of the staff; welcoming by one of the owner's with champagne at 6:30p and tea at 4-5p. We loved receiving a map of the highlights in the area and the location in Clifton.

Review 69:There is nothing to write here because we liked everything. The only regret was that it was not long enough.

Review 70:This was a fabulous castle hotel. I believe we had the best room in the whole building and faced the front lawn. The staff was so nice and I loved the fact that there was a meet and greet by the owner to give the history of the hotel. The restaurant was first class with a great menu and everyone went out of their way to make us feel special. The charm of the building was awesome. I would definitely go back for another visit.

Review 71:The overall staff was good except for some (not all) at the front desk, very unfriendly, no smiles, strictly business and did not make us feel welcome....very disappointed in that aspect of it.

Review 72:When we booked, we didn't realize we were getting a suite with a fireplace. It was our last night and a nice way to end trip. Rooms spacious, dining room nice and convenient. Food was good and good specials for those staying in hotel. Love the parrot - Gilbert who stays in the lobby and gets a lot of attention and will talk to you.

Review 73:No WiFi in the rooms which was ok because we met some nice folks while sitting in the lobby area to connect. At breakfast the next morning, I witnessed the front desk staff personally handing a "dongle" to what they considered a VIP guest. This device gave him WiFi access anywhere in the hotel. That was disappointing to know some guests are treated better than others. *Tip, Ask for a "dongle" .

Review 74:Lovely castle hotel, nice staff at front desk. Lobby and bar and restaurant are well appointed. The room was outstanding. It was large and comfortable. Champagne reception in lobby prior to dinner. All nice touches. And Gilbert, he's just cool!

Review 75:In a great location for walks. The staff were so friendly and the breakfast was sumptuous. A special rate (~ €19) for the 2-course dinner was excellent value. They even have a talking grey parrot, Gilbert. We had a talk in the evening about the hotel washed down with complimentary fizz and canapés.

Review 76:The uncomfortable bed. Seemed to have two singles joined together perpendicular to normal, and was quote uncomfortable despite the mattress on top.

Review 77:All good, especially the staff. It had a lovely feel and setting.

Review 78:The room could use a new bedspread and patching of some of the well used furniture. Do not take the Sky Road to find the property! Take 59 to Clifton and enter the property from the town.

Review 79:Brian the owners is certainly the biggest asset to the property. He is extremely personable, participates totally in the running of the hotel and satisfying the guests' needs. The food was exceptional - breakfast and dinner. The gathering in the bar in the evening was an authentic Irish evening, with music and singing and a good time. The room was very large and comfortably laid out. The property was well maintained but a few hidden areas could use attention.

Review 80:spa bath did not work, disappointing, but didn't matter as the rest of our stay was wonderful.

Review 81:the staff were cheerful and helpful. enjoyed music in bar, everyone friendly. dinner top class, service perfect.

Review 82:Uncomfortable bed and pillows. Towels were old and tatty. Bathmat was badly stained and i wouldnt use it for that reason

Review 83:Restaurant. Staff. Location. Welcoming. Great location

Review 84:nothing

Review 85:The owner and the staf are very friendly and welcoming. Rooms are very lovely and comfortable. We really enjoyed music nights with delicious dinner and in the bar. We really relaxed in nice and quiet surroundings as well. Thank you very much indeed for your wonderful hospitality.

Review 86:The friendliness of all staff and the variety of entertainment. The different choices of menu's. The atmosphere was great and the personal little things like the flags of each country on the tables and the photo's as momentums.

Review 87:Whats not to like....staff were extremely helpful, the Castle was spotless, rooms were fantastic, our view was over whelming, we had a couple of meals, which each meal was better than the next one..... Abbeyglen has character, relaxation and fun all in one.....

Review 88:The windows in the dining are are overed in cobwebs and could do with a lick...

Review 89:Everything about the place was just what was needed fro a short break. Staff, Rooms, and general ambiance were excellent. The talking parrott was a treat.. When we arrived he spoke, whistled and i just could not believe my wife who said "He dosn,t do much"..what do you want woman for him to call you on his mobile???

Review 90:Needs an update in the interior
