Reviews for The Lookout Cave Underground Motel
Review 1:Just the smell coming out of bathroom
Review 2:We loved the idea of being underground!!! They suggested a nice underground resto to celebrate my birthday and I got some mint Lindt Chocolates from the Motel staff!!! Such a sweet detail!!! Thanks
Review 3:the room was quite noisy, the wind rushing through the air vent gave a feeling of being in a dark aeroplane ! no bathroom amenities supplied
Review 4:It was a unique experience.
Review 5:What me really upset: We had a nice chat with the room service personel. After a while the boss (?) came and gave her to understand that she should do her job instead to chat. Sorry, but WE asked her some questions, which she just answered. I understand, that with an hourly payment the employee should use the time for working, but guests should have priority. And in front of guests there should not be a discussion about anything. I work in the tourism industry as well and know, what this is about. Moreover: In terms and conditions of the hotel was clearly mentioned, that guests could feel free to contact any personel for information. So, where was the problem? After this situation I felt very upset and I was thinking to change the hotel. I just feel sorry for the room service personel.
Review 6:Location, room and room service were fine. Nice sitting and BBQ area in front of the house. From top of the "roof" there is a wonderful view.
Review 7:- Only a little window to the corridor and no look outside but to me this is part op being in a cave...
Review 8:- Room in the cave very well maintained and clean. - Free parking under carport. - Sleeping in a cave is a special experience , temperature always constant.
Review 9:Unique underground rooms, very comfortable & air conditioned. Very friendly staff and casual atmosphere. Good overview of town from lookout above motel.
Review 10:Was accidentally charged twice for our stay but it was promptly resolved and refunded by the great staff.
Review 11:Amazing experience that I have never seen before! It was like entering into another world. Absolutely Loved it!
Review 12:The walls and ceiling are bare rock so dust falling does occur.
Review 13:Genuinely deep underground rooms leading to an underground hallway. Bare walls and ceilings add to authenticity and character of rooms. Newly renovated Deluxe rooms are modern and worth it. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The lookout above the motel is the best in Coober Pedy.
Review 14:Unique experience, not everyday you stay in an underground hotel. Front desk staff very helpful in finding us a excellent day tour of Coober Pedy and area.
Review 15:Flexibility of facility owner, who provided access to my room at a time well beyond the latest check-in time. Very nice location, good view of Coober Pedy, nice room carved into the rock.
Review 16:The bed was a bit uncomfortable...
Review 17:The location was perfect! The room was excellent... It was indeed an unique experience living underground!! The staff was very warm n welcoming..
Review 18:Very good location on top of the hill with a fantastic view over the city and the desert. Very friendly owner, nice "cave" to sleep in, quite special!
Review 19:The Lookout was easy to find, front office staff were welcoming and very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean and comfortable. Avery pleasant experience.
Review 20:The bedroom was great, cosy, pretty and comfy, I was just a little bit disappointed of the front room not being underground for a more unusual experience.
Review 21:My husband felt room was a little small but it was only overnight and I think he felt a bit different being in a room underground!
Review 22:A different feeling sleeping underground. It was a hot day, so room was lovely and owners had everything cool for arriving clients who were hot and tired. It was a lovely welcome.
Review 23:Hotel is built into highest hill in town and has great views of the surface of Coober Pedy. Views are good, although most of Coober Pedy exists underground.
Review 24:We stayed in one of the dug out room and felt very nurtured. The temperature and quiet were wonderful. The owner is very friendly and has done a sublime job all over the motel.
Review 25:The wind was blowing the day that I was in Coober Pedy (although I think that is a frequent phenomenon). The room had a vent up to the surface (as most rooms do). The noise that came down that vent all night was incredible - it was like I was sleeping in a wind chamber. As a consequence, I really struggled to sleep ( I wish that I had had a decibel counter). I have stayed at another place in Coober Pedy that did not have this problem (although it also had a vent) - so I think that it must be peculiar to this property.
Review 26:The room had been recently renovated and had a modern feel - but there was one thing that should have been changed as part of the renovations (refer negative comments) but was not!
Review 27:Priced a little high for what it was
Review 28:It was a clean quiet underground hotel, with all the basic amenities you would need. If it has been warmer and sunny, we would have probably made use of the outdoor areas.
Review 29:Sublime, an experience not to be missed. I took a look at all the other motels while I was there, this was the most authentic underground living experience. Do it!
Review 30:Our underground self-contained apartment was a real surprise after many months on the road in fairly basic accommodation. The crisp white sheets and soft plush towels were delightful and so unexpected in Coober Pedy. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 31:Being underground WIFI & phone service is rather sporadic (and sometimes non-existent) ....but having said that, everyone survived not being able to get the internet indoors!!!!
Review 32:The staff were friendly & helpful. Beds and room were clean and comfortable (and beautifully made up each day if you required this service). We were towing a trailer, so were pleasantly surprised to find a space allocated for our car and trailer to fit right outside the entrance door. We've been to motels with much larger car parks and were not able to park nearby with a trailer so the convenience of parking was much appreciated!
Review 33:good room and facilities, we were in late and staff were there to welcome us and check us in. There were five of us including two young children and they fitted in bunk beds fine.
Review 34:Room was very small, carpet at doorway was torn and I tripped several times. Bathroom, you could swing a cat in and the tiles were cracked. Noise level was high as you had to keep the wi Dow open for airflow and therfore heard everyone in the corridor.
Review 35:Location was good
Review 36:Some cupboard space would have been nice, perhaps the TV could be mounted on the dugout wall ?
Review 37:We observed excellent cleanliness protocols and received assistance with printing a document that was above expectations.
Review 38:Rooms are smallish, but given they had to be tunnelled out, it's all part of the experience.
Review 39:Excellent, friendly and helpful staff. Drop off and pick-up laundry service. Nice warm room, given it was freezing outside. Fabulous underground experience for our kids.
Review 40:Experience of staying underground, cold outside at night - warm inside, great view of CP, even better from top of the lookout, 360 degree view of Coober Pedy and surrounding area.
Review 41:As there is no restaurant it's abit of a walk to a place to eat, absolutely fine if you have a car.
Review 42:The friendliness of the people who own the place & the view
Review 43:No mobile phone reception in the room we were in. When we arrived, well after dark, it was sort of tricky to find the hotel up the back of town. More signs would have been helpful.
Review 44:It was cozy up the back of the hotel under the hill. We were running late and the reception were understanding when we rang to explain that we would be late and waited for us to arrive.
Review 45:Wifi didn't work in the room but this was explained to us on arrival. It worked fine on the couch outside our room
Review 46:The calm quiet of the cavern provided complete darkness and allowed a peaceful sleep. Friendly staff and excellent facilities.
Review 47:Our GPS sent us on a tour of the town and eventually up a back road to the motel. We arrived after dark so this was a challenging experience. Arrive before dark best plan.
Review 48:Room was very nice, dug out from rock and quite unique. All room facilities just what we needed. Modern, clean and comfortable.
Review 49:Not a single thing, no complaints or concerns whatsoever
Review 50:Warm, welcoming staff. Attended to every need. Comfortable clean rooms, awesome customer service. Wonderful friendly people
Review 51:We would like to have been provided with a bigger variety of teas, herbal and perhaps a sachet or two of decaf coffee.
Review 52:Our reception after a long day on the road from Adelaide was very welcome. Room very comfortable without being luxurious. Particularly grateful for the breakfast crockery which allowed us to prepare our own and be on our way early in the morning.
Review 53:Nothing to report!
Review 54:Friendly staff provided accurate advice on local attractions, dining & fuel prices. Quiet serenity, excellent view over Coober Pedy area.
Review 55:It would be difficult to fault this place.
Review 56:Liked the friendly and helpful staff, the quiet rooms, the stunning 360 deg view, the value for money and the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms. Much better than expected - a cool retreat in an arid wasteland.
Review 57:I was only there for one night... wish i stayed longer. :)
Review 58:I loved the service and how welcoming the place was. They were so welcoming to my family, my dog and I. I would definitely stay there again! So quiet and peaceful. the view was lovely. thanks again :)
Review 59:Nothing
Review 60:Being in an elevated position and somewhat away from centre of town -though not at all distant- made me feel my car was safer overnight than being parked along the main drag. Sense of roominess-wide corridors, sizable rooms. Nice hot water.
Review 61:Would be great to have food options on site but I didn't mind the 5 min walk to the main street to try out all the local restaurants.
Review 62:The hosts are friendly, willing to share advice and pick you up and drop you off (no public transport or taxis in CP); the rooms are large and spacious; excellently appointed; great views from the lookout itself; very quiet and a fantastic outlook; great value for money in a town where there aren't that many executive options.
Review 63:Wow, what a fantastic setting. If you have never experienced sleeping underground this is the place to do it. Great hosts, and it will be a really good place to stay with all the improvements they are currently putting in. Our room had been improved and was to a high standard
Review 64:- Wifi reception is poor inside the dugout, you have to go outside - The bed was rolling away, we had to prop it !
Review 65:- Fantastic view and accomodation - Pleasant and healthy weather, fantastic starry nights - Helpful and pleasant staff - Naturally cool and noiseless rooms, you sleep like a log !
Review 66:No air-conditioning. Apartment was dug into side of a cliff. Front door, window and wall are not underground and face the evening sun. Not having good ventilation means the apartment is a heat trap.
Review 67:Layout was good and spacious. Bed was comfortable. Separate lounge and TV was good Staff were friendly and helpfull
Review 68:I have stayed underground on a number of occasions in Coober Pedy and have always appreciated the quietness and cool temperature. The room we had (small family) was very warm notwithstanding that the outside temperature was a very mild 32 degrees. I could not work out what was going on. The corridor outside my room was noticably cooler.
Review 69:I was encouraged to book as a result of the properties' good reviews. It was a brief one night stopover and the general amenity and staff friendliness was good but......
Review 70:had to go outside the room for internet to be expected though
Review 71:the location was good you could climb up on top and get great pics of coober pedy sunset was awesome. Very clean and a homely feeling
Review 72:Did not like how rooms only had noisy pedestal fans, no where to put toiletries whilst having a shower(no shower cadies), could not access wifi from inside room and top bunk bed had no guard rail so my two children had to share a single bunk bed.
Review 73:Enjoyed the experience of sleeping underground. Room was immaculate and comfortable. And the view of Cober Pedy was unreal.
Review 74:Wi-Fi keep getting blocked out.
Review 75:Location is excellent.Sunset photo's from your rooftop can't get any better. No problem to staff for imformation on sights and places to buy jewellery and souvenirs.
Review 76:The rooms got a little bit hot at night and our Wifi ran before our stay had ended and as it was out of office hours we had to do without..
Review 77:I loved our room and our view. It was worth the money for the experience. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I loved the beautiful environments created for sitting outside.
Review 78:No air conditioning.being underground did not cool room sufficiently. Fixtures in bathroom shabby. Pillows very uncomfortable.
Review 79:Spacious pet friendly studio Good beds
Review 80:The staff was very helpful and kind. Answered my questions and helpfully got us needed supplies. Made the visit special as was the hotel! An experience not to be missed!
Review 81:- Breakfast poor - Rolling bed (had wheels) - Dishes where not truly clean
Review 82:- Staff very friendly - Good Parking - Safe - Location perfect - Fast Internet
Review 83:Slippery shower floor. I had to put a towel under the wheels on the bed, being on a tiled floor it kept moving.
Review 84:The position of the motel was awesome as the views were fantastic. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Kids loved sleeping in the cave.
Review 85:No mini-bar or iron in room, so this was wrong information provided by booking com.
Review 86:Staff picked me up from Greyhound Depot and also dropped me off at airport and even picked up food for me. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
Review 87:Gravel carpark, very dangerous for motorbikes. Most of the hotels/motels in town have the same problem.
Review 88:slept like a log. Italian club do free pick up was an experience worth having
Review 89:We were very impressed with the service and the friendliness of the staff. Loved it, telling all our friends that it is the place to stay in Coober Pedy.
Review 90:Nick was a perfect gentleman. Picked me up and dropped me off from the bus depot. Gave suggestions of what to see to make my stay enjoyable. Great views of the surrounding district from the surface of this underground motel. Really enjoyed my stay.
Review 91:Bit hard to find in the dark, had to ring for directions Booked double and single bed but only got 1 bed to share with 11yr old grandson.
Review 92:The friendly, helpful staff and the view over the town
Review 93:I loved the location and going on top of the hill to watch the sunset. The out door area was great pretty fairy lights and all the travellers sharing their stories. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble.A great place to stay while exploring Cooberpedy,We had a great underground experience
Review 94:Small bathroom
Review 95:The accommodation was underground which was a different experience and the facilities were adequate. It may not be the height of luxury but that is made up for by the quirkiness of the place. Free WiFi was very welcome.
Review 96:I had the most delicious sleep deep in the recesses of a cliff face. A fan dealt well with the underground humidity and the temperature was perfect. The view of Coober Pedy in the sunset was glorious and the gentleman who booked me in delightful.
Review 97:had a bit of a problem with wifi could have been my ipad or maybe I was doing it wrong, go with the latter apart from that no problems.
Review 98:the location easy to find and good views of town and country side got some good pictures good place to get the sunsets. Surprised at how warm the room was at night I have never stayed underground before.
Review 99:Rooms were very hot even with all the supplied fans running all night.
Review 100:Very interesting as it is carved from the ground. Great view and even better if you climb to the the lookout point. Comfortable room.
Review 101:Sleeping in the cave is not as good as people thought, in the midnight the room become hot and hot...A the noise from outside and the fan just can't make people sleep
Review 102:The location of the motel is fantastic, got best lookout of the whole town.
Review 103:We were given an old front room which opened onto the carpark. Every noise was amplified into our Cave. The kitchen are was older than my Grandmother, but at least the kitchen was still going, which is way better than Grandma.
Review 104:It had a super comfortable bed. The lack of air conditioner was worry at first but being underground the ambient temperature was perfect anyway.
Review 105:Mould on floor tiles Strong smell of bleach keeping me awake at night. 3.5 star is vastly overrated! We got a "miners Dugout", which the receptionist reminded me in no uncertain terms that "I" had chosen. Great from 1500kms away, but once I arrived I knew I'd made the wrong choice and had to live with it, but you'll only catch me once as I'll NEVER RETURN. I chose to stay elsewhere on my return visit home. Shower - no door & sides cracked. Tiles in poor condition.Vanity basin rotting with water damage. Floor tiles throughout even in the bedroom. Old furniture like I'd chosen a 1star Uni-dormitory.
Review 106:The shower floor. It was dangerous to try and stand on without some form of anti slip fabric laid on the floor first. Suggest some form of anti slip be supplied with the other bathroom requirements. It may also be advantageous to have some form of sign warning of the hazard.
Review 107:the friendly staff made you feel welcome on arrival. It has a great position overlooking the town it also provides magnificent viewing of some spectacular sunsets. Our room was well equipped with provisions for breakfast, and replenished daily.
Review 108:We had the room in the end of corridor and maybe that's why wi-fi signal was week.
Review 109:We were impressed by the idea of the hotel digged under the rock. Nice family room with all necessary equipment. Very nice and helpful receptionist. Convenient location walking distance to city center.
Review 110:My wife and I stayed during the month of August 2014 for an over night stay. Would recommend the Lookout Cave Underground Motel and the town of Coober Pedy. I found the locals to be friendly and accommodating. The Motel is positioned on a hill overlooking the town and is easy to find.
Review 111:our room had 2 windows and a front door, off the car park, not really underground fair way out of the town
Review 112:the view of coober pedy, the staff were really great, got us booked into a restaurant including pick up and drop off
Review 113:Loved the warm temp under ground, outside was freezing. We had had cold nights for 2 weeks while travelling from Melbourne. It was a warm night so we slept well
Review 114:There was nothing we didn't like.
Review 115:Staff helpful and welcoming. Travelling from Darwin to Adelaide this accommodation was wonderful and very surprising. Wat a hidden gem. Will stay there again on our bed visit. Felt safe and very comfortable. Thank you.
Review 116:We liked having the front open to the outside world. Being a bit claustrophobic it was great to be underground and yet have fresh air in through two windows and a front door. We booked a miners hut.
Review 117:I don't like to be locked in the foyer before midnight.
Review 118:The cave Is a nice experiance to have while in coober pedy. I believe its more interesting than a regular motel room.
Review 119:Noisy kids in corridor but no fault of the motel.
Review 120:Excellent facilities and set up really well, especially considering underground. Really good sensation sleeping underground. Great staff.
Review 121:Loved the experience of staying underground. The room was comfortable and the staff were really friendly. The position of the motel was awesome as the views were fantastic. Lived being able to go to the top of the hill and get 360 degree views.
Review 122:room was a little stuffy - had to have the oscillating fan on all night.
Review 123:Extremely friendly and accommodating staff, lovely clean rooms, hot showers!! and a terrific atmosphere. A great experience!
Review 124:Apparently the rooms stay at the same temperature all year round due to being in the 'cave'. This needs to be true as even in winter I found the room just on the warm side with only a fan for air circulation and a pipe in the roof - although bathroom did have a powerful extractor fan.
Review 125:Freindly and helpful staff, decent free wifi, clean, comfy bed, good shower. Good value at the price I paid.
Review 126:the double bed was a tad uncomfortable
Review 127:heaps of space for our family of 5
