Reviews for Castle Grove Country House Hotel
Review 1:That we didnt have more time to enjoy the surroundings.
Review 2:The welcome we received was second to none and the ambience in the Hotel was superb. The scrambled eggs I had for breakfast were the nicest I have tasted in years. Would have liked healthy options as in low fat milk and brown bread, but this did not colour our stay by any means.
Review 3:Friendly staff.Very informative re.history of house and estate.Would suggest that Mary should make a video of all the information she has of furniture, history etc.of this wonderful house.
Review 4:NA
Review 5:The charm and quality of the rooms and the delightful parkland setting. In addition, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was also of a high standard and very reasonably priced. A most relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Review 6:Very comfortable room. Peace and quiet made for a relaxing stay. Excellent dinner, the best I've had for a long while, and lovely breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Very good internet connection. Have been recommending it to all my friends since my stay.
Review 7:We found the house was very far out from Letterkenny, €15 in a taxi, the driveway up to the house could do with some lighting, if you have mobility problems this is not the place for you, there is no lift to the upper floor. There was no television in the room but you could watch a t.v. in the library.
Review 8:This country house is beautiful and very relaxing, the staff are very friendly and nothing was a problem for them, the food was good
Review 9:Lack of modern amenities; in character with the era of the House.
Review 10:This is a fantastic old estate / country house in a beautiful location. The furniture appears to be original and very much in the character of the Hotel; it could be described as "dated"; no in room tea / coffee making facilities and Mini Bar. The staff and owners of the House went above and beyond my expectations on customer service; the food was the best that we as a family had ever eaten; very generous portions. In short, a truly remarkable experience that will be fondly remembered for years. Hope to be back soon!
Review 11:Comfortable and elegant, peaceful with wonderful service. Delicious food and a served breakfast. Beautiful views, large room and very comfortable bed.
Review 12:Nothing at all, everything was more than satisfactory.
Review 13:Superb atmosphere, incredible location and facilities - like going back in time, lovely relaxed vibes and beautiful décor throughout the dwelling - will definitely be back! Staff were extra helpful and welcoming, couldn't have asked for a nicer stay!!
Review 14:No TV in the room Floorboards creaking a lot, also from other rooms House in need of TLC, decaying in some areas....
Review 15:The old world charm. The wonderful food. The wonderful breakfast. The kind staff.
Review 16:The place seemed to be in decline. General feel was old-fashioned.
Review 17:The welcome given to us by the lady owner and daughter (manager) The parkland setting Room size
Review 18:Had to come home
Review 19:Lovely country house in beautiful serene grounds yet only a few miles from the bustle of Letterkenny. Lady of the house Mary was a delight to chat to with a wealth of knowledge i could have listened to her all day long. Alison on reception was also helpful and kind which made our stay even more enjoyable. I loved the beautiful paintings throughout the whole house, everywhere i looked i found another one! Truely an enjoyable place to stay
Review 20:The toilet made a lot of noise. Difficult to get in and out due to a very long one-lane driveway with lots of speed bumps.
Review 21:Peaceful, secluded, decent breakfast, good wifi.
Review 22:Unfortunately there was a function on in the room below our bedroom. It was supposed to end at 10.30 but went on till 11.45. Loud music, doors banging and general noise, They did give us a few bucks off the room the next day but nobody should have been given a room near the funtion.
Review 23:Breakfast was excellent and the service was impeccable.
Review 24:Voices from guests attending a retirement party could clearly be heard in my bedroom long after midnight, although I'd asked for a quiet room. When I paid the next morning a phonecall was being taken at the same time, which prevented an opportunity for immediate feedback.
Review 25:The charming mature setting, overall appearance of the house and the convenience of the location.
Review 26:Quality and Presentation of Full Irish Breakfast did not reflect that of evening dining. No Soda Bread. Potato Bread, Black or white pudding, mushrooms or hash browns. Sausages very poor quality and under-cooked.
Review 27:Homely Fires Friendly Staff Excellent quality and presentation of evening meals
Review 28:If you love antiques this is a great place to stay. In addition, the owner is most accommodating and has interesting stories to share as well as great knowledge of the area.
Review 29:Staff interaction was always pleasant. Mary T helped us decide what to see each day we stayed, she always directed us to beautiful places. The grounds are enjoyable, the house is well kept, staff is professional.
Review 30:Real country-house luxury and exceptional quality of food Small touches like complimentary tea/coffee served in one of the several drawing rooms - full service and home-made biscuits!
Review 31:nothing springs to mindh
Review 32:Overall character of hotel, attendance of staff, evening meal well worth experiencing, food was prepared to our liking. Breakfast choice good.
Review 33:Enjoyed every second of our stay, had two huge, tastefully decorated rooms for a fam with two adult children, exquisit dinner with a super personal service. Great people, great atmosphere, not cheap but worth every cent
Review 34:What a great location for a two day/ one night heeded break! Set in 300 acres the house is so full of history being 350 years old. The wonderful family that run it are fantastic hosts and Mary is so enthusiastic about the history of the house - ask her and see her enthuse about all the meetings that took place & all the historical figures who met in the house! Irene and Owen & Mairead were fantastic as well - great service, thanks one-and-all
Review 35:I was disappointed that there were no tea-making facilities in the room. During the day tea/coffee is available on request in the reception rooms but an early morning cuppa is a must for me. Another time I will take my travelling kettle. The breakfast, while OK, was not as good as I expected. Cereal, juice and main course were ordered from a table d'hote menu. Even 3 star hotels and top of the range B&B's have a selection of juices, cereals, yoghurts, fruit, fruit salad, breads, croissants etc., set out for self service. My impression was that it is done this way to save costs and avoid waste.
Review 36:The hotel had a lovely relaxed ambience. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the man who showed us to our room and then served us with coffee in one of the sitting rooms. We particularly loved the choice of comfortable sitting, TV and drawing rooms where tea/coffee and home-made biscuits are served free of charge. Our bedroom was spacious and beautifully furnished with Victorian furniture. The bathroom was also spacious with a good shower, bath and towelling robes.
Review 37:we stayed for one night only and found the hotel very old but beautiful and cosy. staff were extremely friendly and the food was excellent-everything was served freshly cooked. loved it
Review 38:Stunning location in this truly unique Country house hotel steeped in history. Only stayed for one night on two occasions. Hope to be back for a relaxing few days and to have time to enjoy lunch & dinner.
Review 39:Lack of coeliac options at breakfast even though we gave prior notice. Bedroom were on the cold side.
Review 40:Beautiful location with gorgeous drawing rooms and open fires. Old world charm. Very relaxing.
Review 41:This was a gift & not usually our type of place. From the great welcome we loved the place. so relaxing. Open fires & plenty of comfy chairs.. Our room was lovely. The meal was fab & the waiting staff great fun.. Really nice breakfast too. Highly recommend.
Review 42:Nothing...it was perfect!
Review 43:We were upgraded to a suite which was such a pleasant surprise. And what was even better it wasn't even mentioned....no big fuss made as some hotels do to let you know they have done you a favour. The staff were simply exemplary in every way!
Review 44:I loved the service ,everybody was willing to help and make my stay as comfortable as possible. The Christmas decorations and general ambience were so lovely. The en suite shower was spacious and the double room I had on the second night was beautiful.Thank You.
Review 45:A television was not provided in the room.
Review 46:The night porter was very accommodating when facilitating my late arrival. The bed was extremely comfortable.
Review 47:Hard to find!! just bit quiet outside dining room - drawing room etc - suggest adding some wifi speakers in some of the rooms and play some classical music at a level that allows people to talk without been heard - and the lady serving breakfast with the tattoo on her arm... sort of takes away from the experience - suggest long sleeves for staff with tattoo's - just a minor thing
Review 48:This is a lovely building and just oozes class - the bedroom GBS...very very nice
Review 49:That at little notice we were included in the new years eve dinner & dance. Was a great night with lovely food & a chance to meet some of the locals.
Review 50:While the staff are only too happy to make tea or coffee when required, I would prefer to have faclities where I could unobtrusively make my own.
Review 51:I loved the old world splendour of this house (it felt like I was on the set of Downtown Abbey)! The staff were very helpful and the room comfortable. The rooms don't have numbers. Instead they have the names of Irish authors. It's not far from the city centre but it could be another world away.
Review 52:I loved the warm welcome and the way the staff took every opportunity to make me feel at home and cared for. The location was spectacular and the house itself was full of old world character. Every downstairs room had a beautiful christmas tree so it was great to sit by the fire sipping tea and admiring them. I was in Letterkenny on business but I intend to return for the pleasure of spending more time at Castle Grove Country House.
Review 53:the building, furnishings, grounds, and staff are truly lovely. This is a gorgeous place to getaway for an extended weekend, to enjoy the serenity & view, all while only 10 minutes into Letterkenny.
Review 54:Staff was very friendly and helpful. Dinner at their restaurant was very good. We only stayed overnight - wished we had more time to explore the grounds.
Review 55:needing to ring ahead after 12.00am to gain entrance. being unable to sleep due to another guest banging on the front door for at least half an hour to gain entrance at circa 2.30am in the morning
Review 56:house and location excellent for our needs
Review 57:Everything about our stay was just wonderful. The restaurant is unmissable. The whole place has a real touch of class about it. Joe & Andrea Sweeney Scotland
Review 58:We arrived at Castle Grove and from our first step through the door we couldnt have been made anymore welcome. What a beautiful setting, such a beautiful old home, we arrived home from our night out and felt so at home. staff had covers turned back and shutters closed.
Review 59:No tea/coffee facilities in rooms though it was available if you phoned through to reception. Would still be nice if you could make your own in room.
Review 60:Castle Grove was a gorgeous location and service was of a high standard from check in to check out. Staff went out of their way to help and breakfast was lovely.
Review 61:That I had to rush out to work in the morning
Review 62:The ambiance, it was like stepping back in time, becoming lady of the manor. An ideal venue for a little pampering
Review 63:Our bedroom could have been warmer.
Review 64:I loved the very warm welcome we received and a tray of tea with home made biscuits. Mary is a lovely lady and we spent a very interesting time listening to her regaling us with her vast knowledge of the house and all the surrounding areas. The reception rooms are beautiful and really cosy. The food is delicious and we will return in the summer
Review 65:Nothing
Review 66:Excellent old country house(high decorative ceilings.fixtures/fittings to match the atmosphere)Dinner in the evening real class! Don't be in rush eg. Desserts made fresh/ baked to order...menus tells you the wait time!!! Owner around to make sure everthing is in order
Review 67:Had to wait a good few minutes for the shower to heat up - thought there would be no hot water but lo and behold it sorted itself out and I had a lovely hot shower ;)
Review 68:Wifi was perfect all over the house, and the cup of tea and biscuits was a lovely treat. The breakfast was delicious, and the staff were very friendly.
Review 69:The stunning setting with beautiful trees, sea views. Hotel is steeped in character. It's beautiful elegant drawing rooms, dining rooms etc staff friendly. A really relaxing & enjoyable stay.
Review 70:The standard room we stayed in needed refurbishment. Better to stay in one of the superior rooms.a
Review 71:Dinner both nights was excellent, and the waiter was first class.
Review 72:There can't have been much not to like as I can't remember...
Review 73:Loved the shabby comfort, stunning drawing-rooms, excellent service and food, lovely location of historic interest with beautiful gardens. Most of all, relaxing.
Review 74:Absolutely nothing to dislike
Review 75:Excellent Irish hospitality - a beautiful old house which retains lots of old world charm - food fantastic - owners happy to pass on history of charming country house
Review 76:Lack of coffee and tea making facilities and staff fairly abrupt but a great property...
Review 77:Great location and a fabulous character property and a comfortable spacious room...missed tea and coffee making facilities in room though!!!
Review 78:I had hoped to hear the grandfather clock chiming through the night as my aunt had a small one when I was young and I loved waking up hearing it chime and waiting to see what time it was. (maybe that would not be the other guests idea of fun!!)
Review 79:I enjoyed everything about my too short stay of 1 night and having to leave just after the lovely breakfast. I had never stayed in a country house hotel before or stayed in Donegal and both experiences were 4 star. The house felt like a home with all the lovely art and ornaments to enjoy. Dinner (salmon)was delicious and well priced as I was travelling on a budget-in fact petrol for my economical yaris cost nearly as much as my two hotel stays. Eoin, the waiter and family members I spoke to were so pleasant.
Review 80:Very very poorly sign posted on the main roads on the way into the property. no welcome at the hotel, left waitign at the receiption desk for 10 minutes despite havign rang the bll. no lifts, so had to take luggage up 2 flights of stairs. Rooms are very very tired and in need of refurbishment and a very deep clean. throws over the bed need to be thrown out. Linens had rust stains on them and pillow cases and sheets and duvet covers are mismatched. Room did not feel/look clean. one power socket in the room to charge phone so if needing to dry hair and charge phone needed to plug out a lamp shade for the additional power socket. No reception on the TV. No Wifi access even though its advertised on their hotel website. no options fro dinner on the first night when arrived late as there was a private charity event on in the restaurant - never advised of this in advance of arrival or at check in and no options given when we asked so had to drive elsewhere. this hotel is Extremely overpriced and there are better more affordable options in the area
Review 81:breakfast was excellent - quality of food was very good and the young lady serving breakfast was very polite.
Review 82:Once again google maps were not well updated to assist us find the venue quickly.
Review 83:The owners of this hotel do a marvellous job supporting local charities holding special events during the year.It was a lovely example of a country manner where nothing you wanted was too much trouble. The restaurant again is Michelin accredited and super be. The price at the hotel and restaurant were very fair. A Beautiful example of splendour from days gone by.
Review 84:Not great choice of menu, main meal portions very small. Could hear everything going on downstairs through door in room, but change room with no problems.
Review 85:Staff were very nice, house was very traditional, lovely surroundings
Review 86:The closest town (Letterkenny) was way too crowded & congested and should be avoided. The northern Donegal coast, however, was stunning and not to be missed!
Review 87:The house, property, food & staff were great.
Review 88:This hotel is in a very peaceful location. The bedroom was huge as was the bathroom - if you like the standard hotel chain this is not the hotel for you. Beautiful table linen and breakfast cooked to order (joy buffet style)
Review 89:Restaurant was closed on the Sunday evening meaning I had to go and find a restaurant in the area. In my opinion a hotel restaurant should be open every evening. Wifi availability was poor and I kept on losing internet access.
Review 90:Location
Review 91:We found this place by chance - didn't book before our vacation. Actually had plans to head south, but Co. Donegal was so beautiful, we stayed! The staff at Castle Grove is a stand-out - very attentive, kind, gracious. The beds were wonderful and the shower was great. Breakfast was quite fine - we didn't have supper. But the place itself is the reason I'd go back - divinely secluded from bustle but close to town (Letterkenny). Quick drives to the northern-most point, Derry, and Donegal. The decor is not modern and slick, but marries nostalgia and coziness without being stuffy & uncomfortable. Views of the Lough. Gardens to wander. And Mrs. Sweeney is a true gem! It really feels like you're visiting relatives. Please visit Co. Donegal and please stay at Castle Grove!
Review 92:Sadly we had only 1 night at the Castle Grove. A warm welcome and the rare practice of being shown to our room which was excellent. Coffee followed in the gorgeous yellow drawing room at no extra cost. A quiet nights sleep after dinner and traditional music just up the road, and agreat breakfast ,all served to us which meant that the milkand juice were really cold. Overall excellent Thank you so much.
Review 93:Location excellent, lovely breakfast- they know how to cook scrambled eggs! Fantastic log fires and very friendly staff.
Review 94:Beautifully designed and amazing attentiveness from staff
Review 95:wonderful location lovely rooms courteous owners and staff
Review 96:The food was fantastic. Sitting in front of the fire with freshly brewed tea and home made biscuits was so relaxing.
Review 97:It's a beautiful old world house ,but also very warm and comfortable . The staff are friendly and welcoming .
Review 98:Breakfast
Review 99:Such a beautiful Country House in a fantastic location. Staff couldn't be more welcoming and friendly.
Review 100:Everything was good.
Review 101:Location; staff; atmosphere; food; tea and bar - all excellent, particularly the personnel.
Review 102:Staff friendly and very helpful. Peaceful relaxed setting and superb food
Review 103:Rooms are big and the radiators aren't big enough to heat the whole room.
Review 104:Lovely hotel and surroundings, quite, friendly staff and nice rooms.
Review 105:Very nice staff, good food (dinner and breakfast), comfortable room.
Review 106:BREAKFAST COULD HAVE A BETTER CHOICE
Review 107:Friendliness of staff
Review 108:Beautiful old-world house, luxurious fit-out, excellent, welcoming service, nice, relaxing environment.
Review 109:cannot think of anything
Review 110:Everything, we felt wrapped in a warm envelope of care and timeless values and had the best sleep ever in a hotel.
Review 111:Damp, shabby & brown hot water
Review 112:Maybe a walk down towards Lough Swilly.
Review 113:It's an absolutely brilliant experience. Can't fault anything about the place. Highly recommend.
Review 114:Lunch and dinner was excellent
Review 115:No faults whatsoever
Review 116:Everything about the hotel, it was excellent
