Reviews for Gateway Hotel
Review 1:We came back to our room after a nice night out to find it freezing cold, temperatures outside were below zero and no heating was on at all. The bathroom radiator had leaked on floor also. To top it off after deciding to have a shower to warm up, the fire alarm went off in our room beyond deafening. Staff did not turn up for at least 15 mins after they'd knocked of alarm from in house system. Several other guests were awoken also and were understandingly annoyed. So after half an hour or so with the door open we began to regret the hotel! Turns out you cannot control your heating in your room. Would have helped maybe of there wasn't a gap at bottom of door, thin blinds and equally thin curtains! We couldn't get in our car fast enough and away from this place as far as possible! With the weather of late being being well below zero having no heating is dangerous....we both have colds and coughs now and will never return again...cannot remark on breakfast as did not want to be there.
Review 2:The close location to our night out destination. At first our room seemed ok could do with a spruce up though. Plenty of parking.
Review 3:Room was very cold heating not on at all I had read other reviews and took a small fan heater with us
Review 4:Room was very clean breakfast was excellent staff very helpful
Review 5:Poor customer service. We had asked for some juice it never turned up, in the morning the fire alarm went off but the was no one around to tell us it was a false alarm until we were outside in our pyjamas and then when we went to check out there was once again no one to be seen at all. The place itself is fine but the really need to work on there people skills.
Review 6:The hotel is so close to the city centre it was very convenient and affordable and clean.
Review 7:Little bit noisy from other guests. Room I had didn't have opening windows.
Review 8:Good location. Room clean and tidy. Very comfortable bed. Shower and toilet area very clean. Generally well maintained.
Review 9:Room was absolutely freezing. You can't turn radiators on. Towel rail also off. I entered and found all the windows open. Closed them all but room stayed at the outside temperature for the night.
Review 10:Reasonably priced hotel, relatively clean.
Review 11:Nothing to dislike.
Review 12:The staff were very friendly. Our family room had two double beds - so good to actually have a proper bed for our 17 yr old son: too often a "family room" has a small sofa bed. Room very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and, although extra, very good value. Off-street parking welcome.
Review 13:Rooms are quite small. Ask for a room in the main building as rooms in the annex are even smaller and dark.
Review 14:Nice, friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms, good breakfast. Parking was limited but we very lucky and got a space
Review 15:Nothing all good
Review 16:Everything ! Stayed for 5 nights, room cleaned daily. Excellent power shower multi channel tv. I traveled on my own for work & it was nice enough to take the wife.
Review 17:There wasn't enough parking for all the guests so I was knocked up at 06:00 and asked to move my car. The breakfast was not a traditional full English as the pork was replaced by another meat. The Rooms were very basic, cold and the noise from the main road disturbed my nights sleep.
Review 18:Nothing really other then it was easily found even if I did drive past it in disbelief.
Review 19:We put our bags in the room and went straight out, on our return later that evening we noticed the following. No curtains in the bedroom!!!! We had to hang a spare blanket up at the window! Toilet seat not fixed and so would move and fall off when used!! Only one towel for the two of us to share and no one around to get to resolve these problems. Also noisy road but that's not their fault.
Review 20:Easy to find on main road
Review 21:Room small, fixtures poor - no curtains or blind over window. One light not working and wires stuck out the wall. Board at bottom of shower loose. Vent literally poking out of ceiling. Plug broken. Tiles from bathroom to bedroom not finished off. Furniture worn and bed was short for even somebody of 5f 6iinch.
Review 22:Staff nice and welcoming. Location good
Review 23:We had room at front (which was a nice size) but was noisy due to main road and light from hotel sign.
Review 24:Proximity to Newport Railway Station and not bad price considering date of stay. Staff were very welcoming and friendly.
Review 25:Struggled to find anyone to leave our key with when we left - reception locked.
Review 26:Good location - good pub down the road, and a very good indian restaurant as well.
Review 27:Our room was in a separate building behind the main hotel building and the rooms were more like rented apartments than hotel rooms. Anybody could walk in
Review 28:The rooms were nicely decorated and clean with good bathroom facilities
Review 29:Very helpful and very good breakfast . My brother and myself came for business and found it very peaceful and relaxing . I had no bedside lamp but it was not a problem
Review 30:The sound of others coming in late could hear all their footsteps above our room
Review 31:Very clean and a nice welcome on arrival. Thought it great value for money
Review 32:I had a problem with the electricity in my room, although I am sure they would have sorted it out if I had bothered to ask but at 1am when o realised I just wanted to go to sleep so I told them in the morning and they were apologetic.
Review 33:The staff at this humble little hotel were very helpful and the shower room was spotless! The single room was just what I needed for a quick one night stopover in Newport.
Review 34:WiFi Went off while working late one evening and first evening limited access so could not get on to internet.
Review 35:Very Clean establishment and a young lady on reception was very pleasant.
Review 36:Staff very apologetic and offered to move me but my room was right next to the extractor from a curry house!
Review 37:It was very clean and receptionist friendly.
Review 38:The room we had was quite obviously being readied for a refurb as the walls had pencilled markings of where the plug sockets were to be installed and the shower head in the bathroom was held on with cable ties and would not stay in position.
Review 39:Friendly staff and easy check in, good room with comfortable beds and a good breakfast too.
Review 40:Chips and holes all in the walls that had not been repaired. Chocolate trod into the carpet.
Review 41:The bathroom was large and very clean in room 10. Shame about the bedroom.
Review 42:few cosmetic items in room that required attention. will email hotel direct. Newport it's self not interesting but not hotels fault
Review 43:value for money close to town walking distance.
Review 44:The water pressure in the bathroom could be better but I suspect they cant help that and it was still a really good shower. A minor thing but it was weird, there were tea and coffee facilities set out but no kettle... I think it must have been moved to be honest but I couldnt find it. I didnt really need it anyway.
Review 45:When I stay at a hotel the two things I want from my stay is a clean comfortable room and a clean modern shower and I was spoilt in both cases. It must have recently had a new bathroom installed because it was very clean and shiney and they set out a number of free products to really show off. The guy at the front desk was very helpful and to the efficient, to the point where It all happened so fast I thought I must have missed something. He even moved his own car from out front to allow me to park.
Review 46:very average hotel, nowhere near the standard of premier inn or Travelodge so at £85 per night it was at least £35 too expensive. Maybe they had escalated the prices because the cricket was on as I can't believe they get away with that price normally
Review 47:location was ok to catch the train to Cardiff for the test match
Review 48:As we walked to the guest house, some of the other guest house were very down trodden and left a lot to be desired. It made the area look very rough.
Review 49:THe location of the hotel was very ideal for what we needed, close to the railway station an the town centre. The staff were very helpful, they accomadated every ones need at breakfast.
Review 50:Time taken to prepare the cooked breakfast. But it was very busy and fully booked so probably unusual circumstances
Review 51:They offered us a twin room rather than a single plus kid bed once one became available
Review 52:No hairdrier although they may have had one if we'd asked.
Review 53:Great breakfast - worth every penny. We had the Full English and toast and preserves. Beautifully cooked and plenty of it.
Review 54:Got up at 7am unsure if I had booked and paid for breakfast went down to breakfast room at 7.20pm no one about at all , reception desk closed so no where to leave key waited in Breakfast room for 10 minutes no one came left key in kitchen which was open !!!!
Review 55:Clean room . Bed and bathroom ok room not large but booked for single and was given double. Bed comfy. Shower good
Review 56:Very poor reception, smell of food, poor finish of decor & worn carpets. Broken lights & no bedside lights. Broken shower & TV that did not work. Incompetant breakfast staff (with the exception of one young lady).
Review 57:Leaving
Review 58:The room was very small, had old furniture and an odd smell and shared a common door with the room next to it.
Review 59:Wifi signal was ok and location close to city center.
Review 60:The shower in room 6 needs a little maintenance, just screw in the shower holder with a phillips screwdriver so that the showerhead stays in place. A very simple repair.
Review 61:The room was a decent size and it was clean.
Review 62:I didn't like the cleaning staff and cleaning timing. Breakfast ends so early, we never made it to breakfast.
Review 63:The reception staff are very friendly and smiling like no one in the UK.
Review 64:On main road, bed vibrates when buses or lorries go past so if you are a light sleeper this may be an issue
Review 65:Late check in available Location from M4 easy to find
Review 66:The fact that the light fitting were hanging off the wall and the damaged walls in the room, no remote for tv? Bad customer service no communication on where my room was or anything else.
Review 67:Privacy
Review 68:Despite taking quite ill with a chest infection shortly before arrival, I received a warm welcome, a sympathetic hearing and offers of help in response to my coughs and winging. Forced to remain for much of my stay in bed, I was extremely grateful for being left alone without continuous intrusions by housekeeping. With its excellent free wifi, comfortable accommodation and nearby high street shops and restaurants I cannot recommend the Gateway more highly.
Review 69:There was nothing that I didn't like:
Review 70:For what I paid, the room was immaculately clean, it had everything I needed. The staff were friendly. I'm a regular visitor of Newport so I will be staying here every time from now on.
Review 71:The Gateway Hotel is more of a B&B than a hotel as no bar or evening meal available. Only saw staff on my arrival to give room key.
Review 72:The hotel offers room only with extra charge for breakfast. It has clean and comfortable rooms which were OK for the price. Free Wi-Fi and parking within walking distance of Newport town centre
Review 73:The room was freezing cold, I had to turn on the radiators, not good in February when I was expected! Not enough bed covers. The blind in the shower room was covered in mold. A bottle of water to go with the kettle would have been good too.
Review 74:Large , Quiet room at back of hotel. Off road parking. I was welcomed by friendly person.
Review 75:Bed was uncomfortable for me and anyone else over 6ft tall) Shower was dripping and couldn't be stopped. Could hear everything that was going on in the adjacent rooms.
Review 76:Helpfulness of staff. Location.
Review 77:Lights above bed did not work; bathroom - floor needed a clean and mould marks on grouting between tiles.
Review 78:Shower - good power ; decent breakfast ; tea & coffee making facilities ; friendly staff.
Review 79:shower drips a bit, curtains need hanging a bit better.
Review 80:arrived on a very cold day, the room (7) was nice and warm good central heating. There are signs of wear and tear, but overall very acceptable. There was a good shower with lots of hot water and plenty of towels. Very comfortable bed, had a good nights sleep.
Review 81:There is no one on reception when i arrived or when i wanted to check out. You have to phone them to check out, no one came & i was told to leave my key on the window sill in reception, which i did'nt like. Although there is a code to let yourself in, i prefer people to be there in the evening. The rooms was a little small.
Review 82:The Bathroom/shower was very good. When i was late for breakfast they still served me which was good.
Review 83:The rooms on the old sice are small and a little dark. No lift The WIFI is the worse, sometimes you have and other not.
Review 84:The rooms on the new sice are so good, nice room, nice WIFI.
Review 85:Shower was a bit small, and the temperature in the bathroom was too high with no adjustment possible.
Review 86:Very accommodating. I needed breakfast half an hour before normal opening time. No problem they said, and I gad full breakfast ready for me at the earlier time.
Review 87:Useless staff. First person we met had poor English. When we went to check out I had to wait 5 minutes before a member of staff appeared. There were only 2 towels despite our booking being clearly for 3 people. The carpet was not well laid and the underlay was noisy - yes you read it right, when walking on the carpet it made noises like walking on plastic. I won't go back there.
Review 88:Room was a good size & tidy. Good location.
Review 89:Toilet seat broken Shower not working Free WiFi went off TV didn't function properly The price Lack of signage to know where the room was Being in a separate building Sitting in the dark after 8.00am waiting for breakfast
Review 90:Smile on the face of the lady at reception!
Review 91:Room very small no bath whole hotel needed a bit of decorating as peeling paint and water damage spots in room. Breakfast took a long time to be served and was mostly burned
Review 92:You get what you pay for it was clean bed was comfortable but staff were lovely and acomidating
Review 93:nothing
Review 94:I ask them if they had some where to put my bike at night. they let me put in the hotel in a spare room. the bed was good, I had a good night sleep. just a short walk to a pub for a drink and food.
Review 95:Bathroom smelled of cat's urine. No shower curtain. Dirty windows, net curtain and blind in bathroom. Big chunk of plaster missing from wall in bedroom.
Review 96:Room was large and reasonably clean (except for windows and blinds).
Review 97:I was given a free upgrade, although that was probably because the main hotel was being renovated. Room was fine, staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast ok but it would be churlish to complain for the price I paid.
Review 98:Member of staff letting himself into my room at 9pm, mumbling something then shutting the door again. He didn't identify himself when I challenged him outside the door of my room just afterwards, he actually told me to be quiet as he was on the phone. What his intentions were I don't know, but I'll never stay there again.
Review 99:Clean, cheap
Review 100:The fact that there was cobwebs behind head board the kettle wasnt exactly clean half the tv channels didnt even work curtains wouldnt close propally and had to share the bathroom with a snail on the wall. There was hole in wall by bed that hadnt even been covered over. Payed for 3 nights b&b and wasnt even allowed a slice of toast for breakfast. And only stayed for one night and still had to pay full price. Wont be staying there again.
Review 101:The use of wifi
Review 102:Wifi and phone not working due to refurbishment problems. Should be good soon when work is completed.
Review 103:Freindly and helpful staff. Pleasant , quiet and comfortable room
Review 104:may be better when work on hotel is completed lack of staff , had to find some body to check in and out some jobs i pointed out to owners require to be done before room is let out to another client
Review 105:close to city nice and quite
Review 106:Property is obviously in state of being updated, but this needs to be done sooner rather than later. Décor, soft furnishing and carpets all need renewal. Bed was very comfortable, but bedding and towels were thread bare in places. Roller blind needs to be a black out as there are no curtains.
Review 107:Friendliness of staff, good location easy access to Celtic Manor. Local facilities and eating houses reasonable walking distance to find a good one. Off road car parking. Good room size. Very clean.
Review 108:My room seemed to have a locked door to an adjacent room, which could have been noisy but I had a quiet and considerate person in the room next to me, so I was lucky. I hope my snoring did not bother them either!
Review 109:Cleanliness of everything and the pleasant and helpful attitude of the proprietor. Also, a nice cooked breakfast and a general feel of calm efficiency. This seemed to be a family-run establishment and benefited from that.
Review 110:Location was a bit dingy, no one to answer the door when we first arrived, very limited off-street parking.
Review 111:Size of the room, spotlessly clean, decor, service/staff, breakfast.
Review 112:The hotel was clean, but generally quite shabby, furnished to a low standard and poorly soundproofed. The whole room appeared to shake each time anyone used the main door to the annex we were in. The bed was only about 6 feet long, with a tailboard above mattress level - not great for someone of 6 foot 2! There was a reasonable choice for breakfast, but the whole process took the best part of an hour and the dining room was far from full. Many chains offer far higher standards for the sort of price we paid - unfortunately none were available when I was booking. I would be very reluctant to return. (Central Newporthowever is nowhere near as bad as it's reputation would have it).
Review 113:The hotel was easy to find and the location not too inconvenient for where we were going on the other side of the river. The receptionist was friendly and got us booked in quickly. When I went back to say there was no soap and only one set of towels in the room he acted quickly.
Review 114:Parking at the rear, it was very haphazard
Review 115:The breakfast was first class and cooked individually. The staff were friendly, helpful, polite, and attentive
Review 116:There is parking but difficult when it is busy no bays are marked out so some park taking too much space.
Review 117:Bedrooms are fair but in need of dome deep cleaning. Shower room was excellent large shower plenty of hot water and clean towels every day. Breakfast was fine but service a little sow.
Review 118:That I have to climb the stairs up to the 3rd floor with my suitcase as there is no lift, nor assistance offered at front desk and I can hear the noise outside & feel the room shakes when there is a lorry passing by.
Review 119:The bathroom was clean. Breakfast was good.
Review 120:Room floor is carpet and not very well applied. Mattress was very old. I had to pay during check-in, which was a surprise for me, not sure if this is a common practice in Wales/UK.
Review 121:Room was very small but is OK. Toilet was clean and hot water was constant in the shower. Towels were replaced every 1-2 days. Breakfast is fine, they have cooked breakfast as well, although I did not try it. Wifi in the room was very good.
Review 122:Minor gripe is the car park has about 4 spaces; that said there is a side road less than a block away and there was enough room to park there.
Review 123:Staff waited up until nearly midnight so I could check in as was delayed by traffic.
Review 124:Overall, the hotel was very poorly managed; very unclean throughout and in our room, Room 9, the wall lights did not work; the bedside lights did not work; the television did not work; the bathroom shaving mirror light did not work; the bathroom extractor fan did not work; no milk in the room for tea / coffee and very unclean. A total disaster in every respect. The owners should be ashamed.
Review 125:Nothing to like what so ever !
Review 126:Not even shower gel rather than very low quality sope. Not clean enough. Not value for money at all comparing to other two hotels that I've booked over the same week end for rest of the two days using Booking.com
Review 127:Nice people
Review 128:1 towel provided for a couple, had to ask for another. Hotel itself covered in scaffolding outside. Inside public corridors smelt quite musty though the room was fine. No staff could be found to give key to to checkout and door to reception area was locked.
Review 129:Clean room with en-suite
Review 130:There are peelings on the room walls. Shower tray not draining water. Single glazed window, noise of moving vehicles on the road disturbed my sleep. Dummy bedside lamps in the room. Very cold room, heating was turned off centrally. Wifi doesn't work.
Review 131:Friendly staff Location of the hotel
Review 132:Friendly Staff, Comfortable accomodation, close to Newport Town Centre and within easy reach of Passport Office should one wish to walk alongside the river bank which is part of the regeneration programme in Newport. Transport both Bus and Rail Facilities close by.
Review 133:Curtains in the room didn't block out much light and the passage acted like a baffle for traffic noise- not aiding sleep
Review 134:Staff were pleasant and helpful especially in the morning after my Internet was lost in the annexe at the back. let me take over a dining table to get some work done where the signal was good. Value for money at the price I paid.
Review 135:Opposite a very noisy railway track with trains going through the night which made the beds shake. Was not aware of this at time of booking.
Review 136:Room was ok, staff were friendly
Review 137:The room was very small and really dirty the television was thick of dust and im sure the window nets had never been washed I did not even stay the day put bag down went for a coffee then came back and handed keys back could not sleep in the room
Review 138:very little interest shown by staff, no towels-had to request them and only x1 hand and bath given, breakfast was awful with cheap ingredients and over cooked, beds were very hard, bathroom was very small and in a "cupboard"
Review 139:location
Review 140:There was no one on reception on arrival, the bedroom was small, the net curtains were filthy, there was no headboard and the bed was under the window, so I was fighting with curtain in my face all night, the window wouldn't close and the noise from outside was terrible. The interior was very tired. For £85 a night it was very poor value.
Review 141:The sheets were clean and the bathroom too, otherwise we wouldnt have stayed.
Review 142:Room was on the top floor and it was hit. Fan provided though
Review 143:Room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was good, hot and quick. A short walk to the station and town centre.
Review 144:Top floor room far too hot with no cooling. Internet connection non existant (wifi signal fine, but no actual internet, so useless). Was given an ethernet lead, but this didn't help. Smelly smokers room that I was not informed about. Generally needs a refresh as grout etc. starting to look tired and grubby. Door lock plate kept falling off.
Review 145:Staff try to be helpful. Location reasonable.
