Reviews for Queens Head Hotel
Review 1:Rooms are a bit small and basic (though clean), and the doors seem to need closing by pulling with the key(s)! The pub seemed quiet and lacking in atmosphere when we visited.
Review 2:Excellent location near to the centre of attractive and historic Monmouth. Free private (albeit small) car park. Very good breakfast, served by the friendly owner.
Review 3:Only comment would be that accommodation could benefit from further modernisaction but was nevertheless very comfortable
Review 4:Relaxed and friendly Children catered for without problems and they loved the power-showers!
Review 5:Great location with very comfy room and incredibly welcoming owner. Being 500 years old the place has real character. Great breakfast. I'd definitely go back.
Review 6:We have no complaints. We came to Monmouth for a family emergency, but our stay at the Queens Head made the week much brighter.
Review 7:Neil, the owner, was incredibly welcoming as we stayed at the Queens Head. He was always available to give us any information, whether about rental cars, the area, restaurants, Monmouth culture, and taxi fares. The pub downstairs had a great atmosphere and live music a few nights during the week as well.
Review 8:Staff not on duty all the time, one has to call a phone to gain access into the building whilst owner has to pop out somewhere.
Review 9:Building was truly historical and quaint, nooks and crannies. Owner friendly and very helpful. Cooked breakfast was very good. Building presently undergoing slow improvements.
Review 10:Walls were a little thin therefore noise/talking from next room was evident.
Review 11:Friendly and informative welcome by all reception staff. Comfortable room, convenient for town centre. Excellent breakfast.
Review 12:How friendly and accomadating the staff were. A couple arrived with us-who weren't staying at the hotel but they was welcomed to our room before we went out
Review 13:Clean room, lovely music, good breakfast. The 400 years old stone fireplace is impressive. Neil, the owner,is friendly and helpful, he could do nothing more to make you feel like home. Neil, thanks a lot.
Review 14:May be the loft room as we had to duck lol youngsters may like it .but it was spotless
Review 15:Was ment to stay at the kings head .but I made a mistake it was the Qweens Head I booked .but a fab find its a very old building 1600 Oliver Cromwell hide there during that war .neil the landlord was fab .next time id book a different room we had the loft the ceiling was low but spotless with power shower.I would defernatly stay there again .its down to earth in a nice way .the breackfast was hot and good quality products it was lovely .next time we go to Monmouth wed stay at the Qweens hotel .dont expect the Ritz we like all kinds of hotels but had much more to talk about after staying at the Qweens.and thank you neil for making me that lovely wine .my husband loved the bar a nice chat to neil as I was getting ready to go out for meal .look forward to visiting again thankyou
Review 16:Staff was very nice and friendly, we felt very welcomed. And at breakfast time it was lovely, very nice environment... It made me feel really good even that I wasn't very well myself. And food was very good, so much choice and full English included. Perfect! I am definitely coming back very soon.
Review 17:The staff and ambience made this a really enjoyable stay - they went out of their way to provide us with a relaxing evening. My young son loved playing pool :0).The breakfast is also excellent.
Review 18:Considering the age of the property (1640) very well presented, complete with ghost of Oliver Cromwell, allegedly. Good host and plenty of well made breakfast.
Review 19:Some areas (eg carpets) were a little tired and in need of refurbishment.
Review 20:Good value as a one-night stay for Rugby World Cup (Cardiff). Very helpful, hard-working landlord. Also enjoyed live music night in the bar.
Review 21:One of the showers was in a questionable location and the two we used had some mould on the ceilings as well as a loose light fitting.
Review 22:Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Gave us some great tips for a day walk.
Review 23:The bed was quite hard, everything was very dated, and I did not think "clean" when I walked in the room.
Review 24:Breakfast was great, cute little town, historic building.
Review 25:The owner went all out to provide me with a Gluten free breakfast which was lovely and so unlike most other places which usually just miss out the things with gluten in. He went and bought gluten free sausages, beans and bread. Very much appreciated.
Review 26:The shower was broken. The TV didn't work properly and the room was too hot. The hotel had seen better days or we (my brother and I ) had been put in a poor room. Breakfast was poor in quality (no fresh fruit or muesli)
Review 27:Good location in centre of Hereford. Clean and comfortable bed.
Review 28:We were not asked what we want for breakfast , someone just brought out a plate with cooked breakfast on, poor quality sausages greasy fried eggs salty bacon. The whole place needs a face life it's tired and worn and feels dirty.
Review 29:The owner Neil, is an affable good guy who was not at all phased by 4 wet, bedraggled bikers bowling up mid afternoon seeking refuge form the miserable weather, and opened the bar to help us warm up. The quality of the beer, and the ambience of the pub was excellent. Breakfast was excellent, and if the building is a little old looking, it's because its an old building. Overall, a fine venue for a stop and a genuine warm welcome you rarely get in chain hotels.
Review 30:The landlord Neil and his daughter are very friendly and make you feel at home. It is very old hotel that has a lot of character which is what we like. It was also near the Blake theatre which we were visiting
Review 31:We were allocated Room 5 at the top of the building. The room is dingy; the bed in a position where it is necessary to duck quite low to get in and out of it on one side. The bathroom is ridiculously small -you need to be a contortionist to get in the bath. The only way to have a shower is to sit in the bath.
Review 32:Friendly and welcoming owner and staff.
Review 33:No where to hang cloths -not even a coat hanger!- no hair dryer in room but I didn`t go ask for one so fair enough. Shower housing was just in a corner of the bedroom, steping out onto the bedroom carpet! Toilet and hand basin area very small,to small Window sills and waste bin could have done with a wash! Electric wires hanging free in several places over doors . Our beds were not made between our 2 days stay !could have a little more attention to housekeeping
Review 34:Pure white linen very clean comfortable beds @ towels Made very welcome ,a good friendly atmosphere Breakfast choice of cereal @fruit juice fresh coffee or tea I was able to have green tea English breakfast was hot tasty and cooked as we ate our cereal a worthy breakfast . We were invited to join the pub quiz night which was fun @friendly All the ground floor reflected the age of the building ,in the bar was an amazing old ceiling and vast open fire place One extreem kindness Neil offered to take us to bus station as we left ,which he seemed happy to do .He was interested in the history of "his " Queens Head Pub ,which he shared with his guests making our visit an unusual but fun @ friendly stay
Review 35:The staff went out of their way to look after me and help with extra requirements I had. My room was basic but functional and I had a very comfortable stay. I stayed in a double room that was more than adequate for my purposes but i I had ben travelling with my partner I might have looked into a more upmarket hotel.
Review 36:Extremely warm welcome and looked after very well. Very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly staff. The room was very comfortable, clean and well presented. Cooked breakfasts were spot on and having a pub under my room was a new but welcome experience.
Review 37:Convenient for National Trust Property we wished to visit.Staff were attentive even though there was a very large Wedding reception and disco.very impressed with how the hotel was back in place for other visitors the following morning
Review 38:Bedroom windows had been left open And the rain was torrential when we arrived. A lot of mould around the bathroom window.
Review 39:Very friendly staff on arrival and departure. Breakfast was exactly what was needed and extremely prompt (we had booked a time slot in the night before).
Review 40:When we booked online although booked for 2 adults when confirmation came through it was only for 1 adult for £55.00. I called the hotel and asked them to amend and price I had been given went up to £60.00. When settling up with my payment at end of our stay he decided to charge us £70.00. So not happy, did not feel it was worth this amount.
Review 41:Very friendly and informative, bedrooms had everything you required but not a hairdryer,
Review 42:Called owner before stay to make sure parking was available, was advised he would make sure we would. However on multiple occasions when we returned there was no parking so had to park in a near by car park. Room was not tended to throughout our stay (5 nights)
Review 43:Was right in the centre of Monmouth Room was comfortable Breakfast was lovely
Review 44:Nothing bad they are obviously doing work there to bring it up so there were just a few niggles with things that were unfinished.
Review 45:Staff and owner warm friendly and helpful. Well cooked breakfast. In general a good standard of facilities and cleanliness.Above a bar but earplugs were provided, a nice touch.
Review 46:Nothing
Review 47:Neil the owner, and Kiernan, the barman were very friendly, informative, and helpful. The charachter of the old building was very interesting, and the location very good.
Review 48:Old buildings often have "character" - if you like everything shiny and new this may not be the place for you - although the bathroom facilities are all new.
Review 49:Nice old building - characterful. Genial host happy to chat and offer local info regarding restaurants etc. Well stocked, well kept bar. Excellent central location. Easy to find.
Review 50:This pub/B&B was in need of so much renovation that it needed to be knocked down but is a very old building and parable listed. The ground floor was filthy and I managed to see the kitchen and made a decision not to partake of breakfast. I was unable to get to sleep until after 1.30am as the bar below had live jazz until 12.30 and then the punters took an hour to go. There was no warning that there would be loud live music on the night of my stay. Wifi was supposed to be available but was not. The fire door at the top of the stairs did not close and this was an old timber framed building! There is no one to meet you when you arrive and no access unless you call the owne on his mobile, even then he did not appear very quickly. Altogether a horrid experience and I left quickly at 8am and made for Cafe Nero for some breakfast. The bed was an old domestic diva which had seen better days and was very soft.
Review 51:Nothing!
Review 52:Although the room was well-appointed, it might have been a good idea if the kettle lead had been long enough for the kettle to reach the table instead of having to make my tea on the floor. Either the teabags or the milk were horrible. I was amazed at the spider webs and dead flies decorating the dining room. Sorry. Neil, I shouldn't have had to point that out; thought your cleaners would have spotted them
Review 53:Comfortable beds with clean crisp fresh white linen and towels. Good welcome from owner. Room nice and quiet. Off-street parking (although it seemed to be someone else's parking spaces....!) The sanitary fittings and power shower were excellent but had clearly been installed by a DIY-amateur.
Review 54:Noisy road outside. Basic rooms. Rooms need repainting/grouting.
Review 55:Lovely property. Breakfast was excellent. Very friendly landlord. Lovely freebies.
Review 56:Free town wifi a bit hard to get inside the thick stone walls of the 400 year old pub!
Review 57:Great old but comfortable hotel in central location with a friendly and helpful owner.
Review 58:Nothing to report
Review 59:Neil the landlord was brilliant. Made us feel more than welcome. Was in town so convenient to shops restaurants etc. no evening meal but nearby was loads of places to eat. Breakfast at the queens head was enormous! Fantastic oldie worldie pub! Would recommend without a doubt!
Review 60:The location is very easy to find, great that the rooms are above the pub, the staff and are very nice and friendly, the breakfast was very nice, although the room was a bit basic, the most was made of the space. The building is very old and historical which adds to the warm and cosy feel! I would say our stay was very nice and pleasant, and the tariff is very reasonable and good value for money!
Review 61:No issues, only very small grumble would be heavy bedroom door was tough to open.
Review 62:Friendly, comfortable, welcoming and characterful. Neil made us so welcome and we felt that anything we needed he would be there to help.
Review 63:The room was clean and comfortable. The shower was excellent with lovely fluffy towels provided. The breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked and generous. Neill the proprietor was very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The Queen's Head is well situated for walking into the town.
Review 64:traffic noise could be a problem, or the clock chiming
Review 65:mine host very friendly, bedroom clean, fresh white towels(bath sheets) good access to the town and out onto main roads, breakfasts very good we enjoyed our stay there
Review 66:We only stayed for one night, but the staff were excellent, we were made to feel very welcome. The room was comfortable and really quirky as one would expect in an inn with such a long history.
Review 67:Having to telephone to enter on first arrival but at least it added a feeling of good security so it was only a minor inconvenience, really.
Review 68:Thought the place was good and the breakfast served well, except am not keen on having to make own toast, though I suspect that is designed to reduce waste which is always commendable.
Review 69:The bar staff are helpful and the local clientele are very friendly on some nights they have live music or a quiz Not far from the river and the centre of town.
Review 70:Try to plan your stay in Monmouth on a weekday night because the weekend pub goers wander the streets after closing singing loudly. The Queens Head lies on the weekend pub crawl route.
Review 71:Neal (forgive me if I spelled his name incorrectly) is rightly proud of his hotel. He wants every guest to feel welcome and comfortable. With us, he succeeded. It is a very old property with parts, such as the bar, dating back 500 years. There is a real sense of history here. Ask Neal to give you a brief history. The room, though a little small and simply furnished, was quite comfortable and clean. Because of the age of the building, the layout of the bathroom was a little strange, but in its strangeness it was quite charming. It is located about 25 meters from the bridge over the River Wye and across the street from Monmouth School, a rather swish institution dating back to the 1600's. The center of town is a pleasant five minute walk from the hotel. Enjoy your stay here, but do not expect 5 star rooms or lobby service. It is not that kind of place. Instead, it is a nice, comfy place to stay at a reasonable price.
Review 72:It is called a hotel, yet did not serve evening meals or have an arrangement for dinner. There was not a car park for guests (as had been advertised) and the road outside was on double yellow lines, not as advertised, this made it rather difficult as we had a dog with us which had to stay in the car. It was not possible to have breakfast 30 minutes early, which was disappointing.
Review 73:The staff were very friendly.
Review 74:Noisy from bar below and traffic. Could not call it a hotel. Filthy dirty. Crumbs on breakfast table from days before, litter and junk in breakfast room. Room - bed linen and towels were clean, but window sills, windows , shelves hadn't.t been cleaned or dusted for weeks and room was only serviced once in four night stay meaning no tea, milk etc and dirty wc. Very little choice for breakfast.
Review 75:Location good for town. friendly helpful owner. Could be good with a bit more effort.
Review 76:There is very limited parking.
Review 77:The owner was great and helped us find a last minute taxi as soon as we arrived. The bed and breakfast was really good value for money.
Review 78:It could have been cleaner. The only single glazed windows in the room, as lovely as they look, don't provide any sound proofing.
Review 79:The hotel was in a great location and the owner was very hospitable. The rooms were comfortable.
Review 80:No bad experience but the bedroom and breakfast room could have done with a good vacuuming. Also, the surfaces in the bedroom could have done with a dust.
Review 81:The proprietor, Neil, was lovely and his breakfast was to die for. I didn't see any other staff
Review 82:Neil, the owner, could not do enough for us. He was just what you need as a host. He made us feel very welcome and his staff were very helpful & accommodating. We're ally enjoyed our stay and would recommend The Queens to anyone.
Review 83:We have just returned from a lovely weekend break staying at the Queen's Head. Neil, the owner, made us feel extremely welcome on arrival and was more than willing to offer us advice on places to eat and things to do. Our room was spotlessly clean with a great comfortable bed, and there were plenty of tea/coffee sachets supplied. Breakfast was delicious & freshly cooked to order. The pub did not open til 6pm but a key was supplied for us to come & go as we pleased. A great place to stay.... We shall definitely be returning.
Review 84:Room dirty marks and dust in bathroom .old toothpaste stuck on floor filthy carpet .30 drunk teenagers leaving bar outside window 0.30 am church clock starts at 5 am cost more than most hotels in area
Review 85:Charming host breakfast pretty good.good location for socialising (below you)!! Car park
Review 86:Great location for shopping in Monmouth 5 mins walk to the shops and pubs And also for walking with the river just a 5 mn walk, Neil the owner cooks a great breakfast.
Review 87:The bar-staff worked a short-changing scam that I hadn't come across before; the bedroom window couldn't be closed properly so that I got the traffic noise from the by-pass all night; the window-glass was cracked and the en-suite was in real need of a lick of paint.
Review 88:The bed was comfortable; the room was warm and the breakfast was very good.
Review 89:The staff were probably the most friendly that I have every encountered during a business trip. Nothing was too much trouble and they catered for my every need.
Review 90:Wifi only available downstairs
Review 91:Comfy Beds TV with plenty of channels Great power shower - even in attic room Friendly landlord Well-cooked hearty breakfast Nearby car park (free outside 9-5, and all day Sunday) Easy walk to main drag
Review 92:The owner was very friendly and an excellent host. The beds were extemely comfortable and the room pleasant and newly decorated if a bit quirky due to the structure and character of a very old building. Breakfast was a feast and served late at our request. The location was ideal, a couple of minutes walk into town and very quiet.
Review 93:It felt unfinished- shower room ceiling unpainted/paint peeling off. Room dusty in places. Bedding clean but inadequate as mattress visible under single sheet. Breakfast not high quality, part of the not great value for money aspect.
Review 94:The owner made a great effort to talk to guests and be friendly.
Review 95:Internet access didn't seem to be available Just a bit concerned at street parking but all ok as it turned out.
Review 96:We arrived very latest night but were greeted by a very polite and helpful employee Room attractively decorated with all necessary towels etc Breakfast in morning excellent Landlord very friendly All round, an excellent nights stay.
Review 97:Bit noisy, but should have expected that, as we were above a pub. Breakfast OK but very basic, needs more variety, fruit, bread rolls, marmalade, yogurts etc.
Review 98:Nice freshly renovated room. Host was very friendly, and it was an easy walk to eateries in the evening.
Review 99:Neil, who runs the Queens Head is a great guy - totally accommodating, really friendly and full of wonderful stories about Monmouth and the surrounding area. It brings it all to life. He cooks a great breakfast too. If you want a place with great atmosphere and chunks of history look no further.
Review 100:Our host, Neil, was lovely and made our stay delightful! He was chatty and friendly-telling us lots of local infomation. He went above & beyond! Breakfast was tip top! Thank you!
Review 101:We didn't do too well in the Tuesday night quiz!
Review 102:Nothing too much trouble. Very friendly host. Nice atmosphere. Lovely old inn currently being upgraded. Excellent location. Would go again.
Review 103:I couldnt stay longer !
Review 104:from the moment I walked in I was made to feel very welcome. My room was spotless and the breakfast was wonderful. My host had a lovely helpful and friendly disposition and I will certainly return on my next visit
Review 105:Neil at the Queen's Head was very hospitable and helpful.I could not ask for more.I also enjoyed a quiet beer with his locals in the evening and found the whole experience welcoming.
Review 106:Not much to not like! Had to be careful of the slanting ceiling in the top room - but soon got used to it.
Review 107:The Landlord was very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The Barman was very friendly too! The Landlord cooks a great breakfast too! All in all it was a lovely overnight stay with clean, if somewhat quirky rooms due to the age of the building. We would definitely stay again!
Review 108:- noise from the street (A40) - small bathroom which one can not see on the photos (bathtub under sloping roof so having a shower was impossible)
Review 109:- friendly host
Review 110:Breakfast on sunday wasn't as good as Saturday, it was cooked by someone else, no coffee was made in the coffee machine.
Review 111:The owner and staff were great and friendly. Great breakfast on Saturday.
Review 112:Not sure if they had wi-fi, couldn't find any info in the room (no booklet explaining breakfast/check-out times, ammenities etc) Room appeared clean and linen was crisp and white, but walking around in bear feet I noticed I'd picked up rather a lot of short black hairs!!
Review 113:Had a lovely bath to soak away aches and pains - complete with candles and a little box of matches! Very friendly and welcoming landlord Beautiful and interesting historic building with plenty of character.
Review 114:First impression of bar area and corridor not great as they are very dark.
Review 115:Room decor lovely and shower good. Owner and staff friendly. Jazz night enjoyable. Breakfast very good.
Review 116:The actual pub and bar area is not nice Limited parking Breakfast was poor
Review 117:Very cheap Landlord was super friendly and helpful Rooms were clean if a touch dated and small
Review 118:Noise of the church bells and downstairs bar when trying to sleep - I'm not a light sleeper but struggled to get to sleep and woke every hour with the church bells unfortunately (obviously not their fault). Just something to bear in mind if you want to get a good night's sleep before a meeting. Poor WiFi signal.
Review 119:Friendly landlord. Great breakfast. Modern, clean room with good shower. Great price.
Review 120:No evening food but not a problem as there are numerous pubs, restaurants and take aways all within a very short walk around the town centre.
Review 121:Friendly staff and locals down at the bar.
Review 122:We have no negative feedback.
Review 123:My friend and I were visiting family and found The Queen's Head a welcoming, comfortable place to stay. Neil, the owner, seemed a very helpful, attentive person. We had a tasty, filling breakfast that set us up for the day, and on one evening we attended a live band in the pub which gave our short break an interesting end. The cost was very competitive.Thank you Neil.
Review 124:Loud music. Venue a 400 year old building, which could do with some TLC. Parking would be an issue for most guests.
Review 125:Room was comfortable and clean. food was good, but facilities a bit dated.
The Fine Print
Please note that there is limited parking available on-site. Parking is possible on the road and a public car park is 150 feet away.
