Reviews for The Old Cable Historic House & Seafood Restaurant

Review 1:The fan in the ensuite was a bit noisy but that's the only complaint

Review 2:Very friendly welcome. Extra heater in the bedroom was a nice touch Most comfy bed with the warmest duvet

Review 3:Great little town with plenty of history and things to do. Went horseback riding along the beach which was fantastic. Did the ring of Kerry and the coastal areas. Great Staff and excellent breakfast each morning. Worth the price.

Review 4:very comfortable, nice staff, good price (low season). Old traditional place, with an interesting historical background, bit museum like. It's not directly by the sea, but pretty close.

Review 5:No toilet seat on bowl.

Review 6:Greeted with a cup of tea and a biscuit.Good size room. Enjoyed our conversation with Alan after he had cooked and served our dinner.

Review 7:The only minor issue we had was the chill in the bathroom, which wasn't heated, and was across the hall from our room. The chill in our room was offset it by a wonderful heated bed, and a portable heater that worked quite nice against the cold seaside winds that kept battering against the house and window while we were there. These would not be issues to be concerned about in the summer months though.

Review 8:Incredibly friendly staff, beautiful seaside town, intriguing history of the property and its connection to the transAtlantic cable, and almost museum like in its display of seagoing, cable related paraphernalia. We loved the charm and the presentation of this Victorian style bed-and-breakfast. The presence of a powerful storm during our visit add it to the spirit and character of this place in November - very knowledgeable staff, and an excellent breakfast to top it off. We will definitely return here!

Review 9:added cost on top for breakfast at €10. A bit steep as most palaces will serve for €7 or 8. Hotels tend to be of the higher range.

Review 10:Basic, simple, well catered for those with disabilities

Review 11:Very nice b & b about 500m from the local restaurants and pubs and very close to Waterville Golf course. Friendly hosts, Margaret offered to make us a pot of tea immediately on our arrival which was appreciated as it was wet and cold when we arrived. Breakfast very good. Margaret gave us good insights into local areas and provided local maps which greatly aided us in our touring. Would recommend people to stay here.

Review 12:Unmatching bed linen, no toiletries in shower, only one mirror in room which was in bathroom..very difficult for 2 ladies putting on make-up and drying hair.

Review 13:Electric blanket on bed

Review 14:Fantastic host, nothing too much trouble. Very good advice from the owner about the local area. His knowledge and passion for where he lives, very evident.

Review 15:The location was fantastic however the welcome on arrival left a lot to be desired - poor reception - our room was not ensuite and we had to use a bathroom across the hall for the same price as an ensuite - I would recommend people stay there as it is a lovely property and the room was very comfortable and clean - the customer service however was lacking

Review 16:Small bedroom with en suite. Only toiletries supplied was liquid soap on sink. Could hear everything from adjacent bedrooms.

Review 17:Nothing. Small bath towels were clean.

Review 18:There was nothing we did not like.

Review 19:Very private quite and spotless room with big shower.Very friendly and help full owners which created a atmosphere to our stay.lovely garden to relax in.

Review 20:Breakfast choice a little limited. Initial welcome seemed a bit grumpy - but this was soon dispelled on further acquaintance

Review 21:Comfortable, well-run, good location. Very helpful staff. A memorable stay.

Review 22:We mistakenly thought that as a b&b breakfast was included with the booking price. It was not, nor was it disused ahead of time, and we ended up with a 12€/person surprise. The food was good, bit more than we would have intentionally spent on breakfast.

Review 23:Locaton was very walkable to everything in town & simple to find. Rooms were large & bathroom was very large.

Review 24:Most comfortable bed. Largest room. When we enquired about evening menu, were told it depended on what the chef/owner caught that day. We were served our best meal of our trip (Sorry cousins).

Review 25:The guesthouse is similar to the town. A little tired and dated. I have been going to Waterville for years and love the place but it needs to up its game and keep up with the improving standards all around the Ring of Kerry. Wish I had stayed in Port Magee. An outstanding example of all businesses out to impress.

Review 26:Very convenient. Pleasant staff. Amazing shower! Clean.

Review 27:There was nothing we didn't like.

Review 28:The owners were quite nice; the breakfast was good. They also have dinner with fresh seafood available as well. The house was clean, the bed comfortable. There are rooms available en-suite and rooms without; bring your own toiletries. It was a good value for the rate charged as it was one of the less expensive places where we stayed during our week in Ireland.

Review 29:It was a little expensive for room only. We thought that breakfast was a little expensive at 10 euro so we chose to eat from local Centra.

Review 30:Stayed in the old part of the house and there was a lovely atmosphere. Heater was on in our room which made it cosy and showed that the owners were prepared to spend a little to make sure guests were comfortable

Review 31:The room was very small and bathroom was tiny, Unfortunately not very clean and filthy, there was dust on skirting boards, shelves, tv (no remote control), carpet under the bed was not hoovered for long time as there was a lot of dust and some rubbish there. The most disappointing was the "restaurant" - it is much to big word for this, as it looks more like canteen. We came down at 5:30pm and was hanging around for few minutes as there was nobody there to serve us. There was a board on the wall with menu. We finally catch the "chef" and asked is there any food served and he said that "at the moment he can make only salmon" - as we were hungry and weather was very bad to go to town so we decided to stay and eat. We were never informed about the price but we checked the dish on the board and was ok with it. The food was ok, nothing special. The ladies that came nearly two hours later was told the same thing and also didn't have any choice. About 8pm in the evening we asked about any other food or snacks and we were told that only desert is available. So there is no point of advertise as restaurant, put a menu on the board if guest cannot chose from it and there is nothing to eat or nobody to serve guest. Mistake. My disappointment was ever bigger when next day on the bill I saw 39e for 2 meals and when I quoted it as on the board salmon had different price, I was told that "it was the catch of the day and for dish like that is quite cheep". I really doubt that this salmon was catch that day. For 19,5e pp I could have steak in the hotel that we stayed night before. The fact that it was the only option to eat this evening, it is very unfair to use it as a chance to charge people more. Unfortunately the breakfast was not better, the food was average and all very greasy.

Review 32:The bed was comfortable.

Review 33:Margaret and Alan were very welcoming and hospitable. They both wanted to ensure I had everything I needed. They offer 3 types of breakfast- full Irish, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. and pancakes with banana and apple and cream. I was there for 3 nights so tried all 3. All were excellent.

Review 34:Bedroom a little cramped. No shower curtain in bathroom. Breakfast service very slow. No fresh breads as you would get in good B&B>

Review 35:People nice but accommodation poor. No shower curtain.

Review 36:Nothing

Review 37:A warm welcome from Margaret as we arrived. She offered us tea and we relaxed after a long drive. Spacious rooms and good facilities. Nice breakfast.

Review 38:Unclear pricing policy. No mention anywhere of breakfast price. Web site doesn't indicate that price is bed only. Could have stayed in a Hotel with breakfast for the same price.

Review 39:Location

Review 40:I booked this for our honeymoon. We were given a budget room and weren't offered an upgrade which we would have paid extra for. Coffee was extra, heat wasn't on, staff was belligerent and wifi wasn't available. We were ushered into the back entrance, not offered food or drink and we were told we were given the budget room because we booked online. Bathroom had a shower head attached to wall, no shower stall or lip to prevent water from covering the entire bathroom floor. When we approached staff they argued and treated us like we were a nuisance. When we asked about coffee in the morning we were told that coffee would not be available until they were ready to serve it, and not before 7:30. But when we were leaving in the morning and trying to quietly take our bags out the back door the guy come out and turned out the lights before we were even out the door.

Review 41:Facilities and furnishings were tired and worn, Wifi was worse than useless. It seemed as if the cheapest option had been taken for everything (from generic reconstituted 'fruit' juice and instant coffee at breakfast to 4 day old newspaper in the 'snug'). V different and disappointing compared to other places stayed in Kerry.

Review 42:Checking in took almost an hour.

Review 43:We had a newly renovated room with 2 twin and 1 full beds. It was very spacious and clean, and the bathroom was modern with a huge shower. Walkable distance to Waterville. Cool place with lots of character. The woman who owns it was so sweet and helpful! And her husband cooks a delicious breakfast in the restaurant.

Review 44:Wi-fi reception wasn't great

Review 45:We had a really pleasant stay. It's on a quiet street but only 2minutes walk into the village. A friendly welcome from the owner, theroom was clean, warm and comfortable. It was €10 extra for breakfast -but well worth it (muesli, Full Irish, coffee, orange juice and toast).Highy recommended.

Review 46:Can't say there was anything we didn't like

Review 47:Lovely place. The hosts are very friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Review 48:nothing

Review 49:Nice people to stay with and really enjoyed my stay, room was brilliant.

Review 50:Owner argued with our driver in front of guests, not professional. We did not find the owner very friendly.

Review 51:Location was good for our needs.

Review 52:Nice historic building, close to town. They went out of their way to help us with laundry ect. Thanks

Review 53:Internet

Review 55:Booking mistake, not fault of proprietor. No breakfast included, & not possible at time required

Review 56:not much

Review 57:All good, but it was €55 for single person and breakfast was not included in that price.

Review 58:Margaret was a wonderful welcoming host who attended to our every need particularly since we had vegans in our group

Review 67:First impression

Review 68:Value for money

Review 69:friendly staff and location

Review 70:Sparse.

Review 71:Clean.

Review 72:Lady of the house was really polite, frendly and helpfull! And the house lowely. One minus and it was slow wi-fi connection.

Review 73:The bed was noisy, it creaked

Review 74:Roomy and airy, hosts were pleasant

Review 75:Bathroom was across the hall Stairs were difficult for heavy luggage

Review 83:The people who owned very friendly breakfast was great

Review 84:Good people

Review 85:Friendly Proprietor and good food.

Review 86:Shame we missed the Restaurant being open, the Breakfast was to die for.

Review 87:Warm, Cosy, Very Helpful

Review 88:Very intermittent wifi

Review 89:Smelt a bit musty and was in need of modernising.

Review 90:The place had a bit of history and character.

Review 91:wifi breakfast not included

Review 92:staff

Review 93:the owners were so friendly and accommadating nothing was to much trouble breakfast was plentiful and lots of options .

Review 94:Location and staff very helpful and friendly

Review 95:The bathroom was a little rundown.

Review 96:The sitting room was a lovely place to spend the evening and the food in the attached restaurant was fantastic.

Review 97:The wifi was sketchy, but this is a very minor issue for us.

Review 98:The owner was very helpful and friendly. You can tell he takes pride in his business. We stayed in room 12, which seems to be part of a newer addition to the building. The bathroom was spacious, incredibly clean, and the shower was great after a long day on the road. This B&B is an easy stroll from downtown and the waterfront. We ate dinner at the Lobster House downtown, but had breakfast at the Cable House. The full Irish breakfast and the banana pancakes were tasty. My family of four enjoyed our stay and we'd gladly come back here again.

Review 99:There were only two options for dinner on Sunday. We read the posted menu thinking there were many options for dinner and desserts, but no. My room did not have a television, which was a surpise.

Review 100:Location. The staff tried to be helpful.

Review 101:Excellent car parking. Very good choice at breakfast - particularly Alan's banana pancakes, which should not be missed. Dinner menu was very good. A very good base for touring the Ring of Kerry.

Review 102:The Old Cable House is part of Waterville history--the mid-19th Century linking of two worlds by the telegraph cable and the attendant complex of houses--the building is not showing its age, though: the rooms are cozy, comfortable. Waterville is small, cheery, busy and then quiet--good food, groceries, Charlie Chaplin and splendid walking are all right there! A challenging walk around Lough Currane took us far and wide up around the lake with its salmon and trout fishing and historic monuments, up into remote pastures, into enchanted woods, along gorgeous glens and back to the sea into town. Exhilarating! Have to say, though, that with all the flowers, the proximity to the sea, it was host/chef Alan's brilliant dinner that we remember--he is a master and you would be missing much that The Old Cable House has to offer if you didn't stop and try his fare.

Review 103:Staff and owners were so friendly and helpful. We missed out on limited available public laundry and Margaret added this service. Further, the wonderful chef got up even earlier to give us coffee and drive us to only bus so we would not get wet in the rain. He did not even laugh at us in our bright yellow rain suits. Breakfast was lovely and dinner was one of our best in Ireland. More travelers and locals should give this restaurant the attention it deserves. Learning the his history of telegraph cabling was a bonus.

Review 104:Can't think of anything we didn't like.

Review 105:Friendly welcome, lovely mixture of old style and modern comforts. Nice sense of history about the house. Good local maps and brochures available free of charge. Good food for breakfast with lots of choices available. Good decor all over with a particulary nice piece of art a sculpture made by the owners daughter in the breakfast area.

Review 106:Margaret was really friendly and hospitable. The room was very cosy and the bed was extremely comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place as well as buying the breakfast in the morning, which was fantastic.

Review 107:Breakfast was poor, surprised that I had to pay extra for breakfast, didn't read the small print. - Felt it was misleading... better to advertise B&B as a fixed price (B&B means Bed & Breakfast)

Review 108:Shower a bit cramped and house could be better signed, otherwise had a really pleasant stay. (Helped that the weather was good,if a bit cold)

Review 109:We were a bit apprehensive given some of the reviews but found the Browns to be good hosts-the evening meal we had was beautifully cooked, as was the breakfast. Room not the biggest but fine for an overnight and well furnished. Wifi ok in lounge;bit more hit and miss in bedroom.Position back from the front but not far to walk along front.

Review 110:We stayed in early March 2014 with the new holiday season just kicking off. The husband and wife team were extremely friendly and chatty. Alan was an excellent chef and even opened the restaurant just for the two of us. Great seafood and you have to try the chowder. Just brilliant!

Review 111:If I'm honest, the appearance of the site lets the place down a bit. OK, we were there out of season and shortly after some pretty horrific storms, but the exterior of the house and grounds were a bit shabby. I've given the wifi a Poor rating, as it didn't seem to be working when we were there, but I'm sure that's a temporary thing, possibly storm-related. We paid €150 for two double rooms with breakfast for two adults and two children: all things considered, I'd say that was was fair value, no more.

Review 112:Margaret is a gem: she couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The rooms were tidy, traditionally furnished, and comfortable. The lounge, with open fire, was perfectly fine. And the breakfast was top-drawer: everything freshly-prepared, tasty, and nicely presented.
