Reviews for The Riverside Hotel
Review 1:Whilst the beds were comfortable and linin clean ,the rooms in my opinion need a complete refurbishment starting with the bathrooms ,but you get what you pay for I guess .
Review 2:Staff were friendly and helpful ,bar and lounge areas were clean and comfortable .
Review 3:The room and bathroom very tired, the bathroom tiles had been painted and black mound stains all around the bath.
Review 4:Good location, parking on site. Helpful staff
Review 5:No real excuse for mould and leaky tap in the bathroom?
Review 6:Friendly, helpfull staff - quickly upgraded room whem TV signal in original room failed. Good basic breakfast. Nice, bright restaurant area Very good value for what we paid!
Review 7:Very disappointed with this hotel which looks very good on the website. It's now very run down, no restaurant in the evening, all decor needs work. Bedroom carpet dirty as was everything behind the furniture. Breakfast was poor too. Definitely not worth the money.
Review 8:Location is convenient to the high street
Review 9:Some noise after 12pm but it was a Friday night and we have experienced far worse elsewhere.
Review 10:Pleasant helpful staff, room clean and warm with good facilities. Car Park very good.
Review 11:Bedrooms/bathrooms need upgrading.
Review 12:Very friendly and breakfast was good and plentiful. Organised meal was very good. Good restaurant and town very close walking distance.
Review 13:Room was tired needed decoration Bathroom had mould on tiles and grout, glass in Window was cracked
Review 14:Only having to spend one night.nice touch having toiletries supplied.bed comfy
Review 15:Hotel is an old one & the room needs updating with new beds although they were quite comfortable for sleeping. Had to walk a long way around corridors to get to the room.
Review 16:Staff were very helpful, obliging & personable. The breakfasts were quite good with plenty of choice. Good Location - easy walking to town.
Review 17:Overpriced at £75 for a basic B&B, very jaded. However staff helpful and friendly. Room directly above the kitchen extractor which ran intermittently all night, also very noisy plumbing. Will not stay again
Review 18:It is handy for Monmouth although there isnt much there to excite
Review 19:The room was across car park in a building that looked like an outsidetoilet. It was sparse stark cheap and nasty. Carpet covered in fluff andhair and fraying. The beds were ancient and uncomfortable. Cheap thinduvets with covers that were missing fastenings. Towels filthy andreturned. Shower room grubby and mouldy. Didn't stay for breakfastwhich was extra to the £75 they were charging. Have stayed in betterhotels than this at half the price. Complained at reception and wasgiven a part refund...staff seem to be expecting a complaint. Nothinglike photos at booking.
Review 20:Firstly, the room photos were not really representative of the actual bedrooms- the real ones (like others have said) are very tired and dated. There was a large tea stain on the wall in our bedroom and the bath and sink were both chipped and cracked which made them look dirty. The bedroom walls are paper thin and you can hear next door's conversations like you in their room. There was a very noisy party on downstairs in a function room. This was not advertised on booking. Unfortunately our room was extremely hot so we had to have the window open to cool down and therefore put up with the noise. We did however have an old fan in the room, but this was CAKED in dust- ie clumps of dust were all over the floor when we turned this on, even after cleaning it ourselves. The TV is small but the main problem is the remote control buttons do not correspond to the functions you require. Eg channel + turned the volume down and you could not turn the volume up without doing it manually on the tv. The "bedside" lights are not within arm's reach of the bed and you have to get out of bed to turn them off which seems a little silly. The fire alarm went off 4 times at 1.30am in the morning. This was not really hotel's fault (an oversensitive fire alarm in response to a shower) but I would at least expect an apology from the staff the following morning- instead they didn't talk to us other than when I was paying, and most of this was her moaning about another customer to the other staff. Finally, and I may be wrong here but the PAT tests on the electrics appeared to be out of date. The fan had a non-readable label and the TV expired before May 2015. They may have not updated the sticker on the plug, but the current sticker clearly shows the electrics are not up to date.
Review 21:The location was ideal with very plenty of convenient off road parking. The booking process was easy and efficient The complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits were lovely. The breakfast service was extremely quick
Review 22:Very noisy party loud music until 13 30 am followed by shouting both inside and outside the hotel Fire alarm was set off four times between 1am and 3am It seemed the duty manager had lost control
Review 23:Everything Noisy people leaving pub at 1 a.m.talking for 50 mins under window Then: Noisy guests at 2 a.m.banging on doors for 20 mins Staff unhelpful - No fan for hot day as 'Not sunny usually in Wales' Bathroom grubby seals Bed springs felt Car Park problems etc etc
Review 24:Nothing but location
Review 25:We had an accident on our travels and could not make it to Monmouth. The owner of the hotel kindly rebooked our stay at the hotel he also ran in Chepstow. He gave us a room there at no extra charge and the staff treated myself and my injured father with the most kindness anyone could hope for.
Review 26:Where do I start. Bathroom full of mould, all corridors full of cobwebs, toilet seat hanging off, could not sit on it properly. Don't think the room had ever.been cleaned. Wardrobe not checked as a short was in there
Review 27:Nothing would never stay here again
Review 28:Cooked breakfast was a bit weak, but we understand they had just lost their chef. Nice variety of continental items, though.
Review 29:Kindly stored our bicycles in their function room on a rainy day. Also let us extend our stay in the same rooms.
Review 30:Other guests knocking loudly on a bedroom door at 2 am for 15 minutes. Thin blind and no curtains, thin towels and staff who took payment completely wordlessly.
Review 31:The taps on the shower/bath were dodgy so the water nearly burnt me when I was trying to get the shower running.
Review 32:Friendly staff. Nice full English breakfast. Nice big room.
Review 33:Hotel looked nothing like the photos portrayed. It was much worse in real life. Restaurant closed. Wifi only in reception. Not value for money.
Review 34:Location was good for what we were in the area for.
Review 35:Didn't like the cobwebs and spiders and it was noisy because of a generator going on and off all night. We were up at 5 am as couldn't stand it any more and went for a walk. We booked for 3 nights but only stayed for one.
Review 36:Staff were very nice, beds were comfy.
Review 37:Only 1 member of staff waiting on for breakfast, and with 20+ people dining, she was under pressure.
Review 38:Ideally situated, very comfortable, and the staff friendly and helpful.
Review 39:Would hate to have had original room. The up grade was dirty and very hot. They gave us a dirty fan which did work and we managed some sleep. The bathroom was grubby although shower was good. No had rails when stepping out of the deep bath. I didn't feel safe when doing this.
Review 40:The price and location was good. The previous guests had left with the key so I was upgraded.
Review 41:No really bad experiences just noticed that the shower room and rear garden sitting area could do with a bit more TLC
Review 42:Staff very friendly and helpful and also the room was in well kept condition. food also good only had breakfast though but enjoyed our stay.
Review 43:Bath had lot of mould, room not overly fresh and clean. Noisy room both from traffic and bar beneath, needs more soundproofing.
Review 44:Location and free parking.
Review 45:Room was very hot; some noise from bar downstairs but still good value overall
Review 46:Friend became ill and the staff were concerned, gave a late checkout. Location is very nice, bed was comfy.
Review 47:The hotel is tired, dirty and shabby. The bathroom suite was cracked, the walls are very thin, the service was appalling and the breakfast inedible. The hotel was nothing like the photos on the website and we feel it was misrepresented. Very disappointed. There were drunken guests passing our room throughout the night and, in the morning, it turned out that they were either staff members, or knew the staff very well.
Review 48:Leaving. It was very close to the town centre.
Review 49:We were charged 69 for the most hideous motel like room. The price of a really nice standard b and b elsewhere. We kmew things were bad when the sign obviously had 3 stars but one taped over with duck tape 2 star is about right but we really wanted to ask for a reduction. We wld have checked out immediately and not stayed but had nowhere wlse to go Ok the room was basic no frills but there was no excuse for the layer of dust. Dirt everywhere. Brown stains on white towels. The room was also stifling hot and the radiator couldnt be turned off as the control had broken off. We were really disgusted and wanted to complain but sadly were very british and just spent as little time there as possible Booking.com should inspect it and remove it.
Review 50:I Know Monmouth well and it was a last minute Easter booking. The only room left for miles probably woth good reason but i knew the location was good and it is. Easy parking and stroll over the bridge to town
Review 51:Garden untidy, empty wine bottle in grass by our table. Walls of room paper thin, could hear guest breaking wind next door! Overall though it was a shabby place.
Review 52:Bed was lovely and comfortable - best thing. Room itself was very clean and shower worked very well. staff reasonably friendly.
Review 53:The toilet wasn't very clean, everything else was fine bar a bit of dust.
Review 54:Helpful staff who went out of their way to serve my needs. i.e. No chef on duty that night, but I was still provided with a gorgeous hot fresh meal by the lovely bar lady/receptionist.
Review 55:Room needed some sprucing up etc didn't like the step up to the bathroom bathroom wasn't as clean as it should have been
Review 56:Nice friendly welcome room well heated and piping hot water
Review 57:We should really have requested a room change on the Fri night as it was above the bar, but it was okay on the Sat night. Bathroom could do with being refurbished.
Review 58:Very friendly staff, food was great and location good. We had a very enjoyable stay.
Review 59:The room was tired and in need of modernisation, crack in the bathroom sink, poor double glazing so the room was noisy from the road and passers by. We stayed New Years Eve and a loud disagreement broke out between some locals in the bar area and continued on to the street in the early of the morning (3am). The staff did not seem to do anything to defuse the situation considering residents were using the bar.
Review 60:Location was ideal for walks and canoeing.
Review 61:Bathroom needed updating
Review 62:Liked the location. Near to everything. Hotel was cosy and comfortable. Staff were very helpful. Lovely full cooked breakfast.
Review 63:The Wifi signal didn't reach our room but it was fine in the restaurant and bar areas.
Review 64:The room was very good for an inexpensive hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful. It was excellent value for money
Review 65:They have updated the rooms & obviously spent money doing it but the finishing leaves a lot to be desired. The en suite had the laminate wall covering (not cheap) but the bottom was sawn off at different lengths. The laminate flooring was sealed on one side but not the other & consequently was starting to lift. It's just silly little things that wouldn't take much to rectify.
Review 66:A perfectly good & adequate hotel for the money. The barman was lovely & chatty & the girl who served breakfast in the morning was really friendly. I can't remember names but the barman was a slightly rotund chap & lovely, the waitress was from the Wirral & also very friendly & chatty.
Review 67:Tired looking room, although everything clean. Reminded me of hotels 20 years ago. Overpriced for what it is.
Review 68:Excellent location near footbridge into Monmouth town. Warm welcome at Reception.
Review 69:Refine the level of the bedroom decor and facilities Fit a decent blackout blind and curtain.
Review 70:Location was good Car parking facility great Staff were attentive and helpful Breakfast was very good value.
Review 71:There was nothing that didn't like about the place
Review 72:Staff were excellent Matthew was a great guy friendly pleasant and fun Breakfast excellent and staff were more than willing to accommodate us when we had an early start Great choice highly recommend
Review 73:As with most hotels the bed could have been marginally softer, reason being a back problem. Otherwise, all good.
Review 74:Easy to find, on site parking, close proximity to town centre and right by the river. Friendly, helpful staff.
Review 75:Was happy with everything no complaints at all.
Review 76:Me my partner and son stayed over for one nite 11/10/14 at the riverside hotel.we enjoyed our stay and the member off staff who was on duty was very helpfull and explained everything in the rite manor.would stop again location was perfect too.AAA+++++
Review 77:The welcome booklet said that the bar was open until 11pm, yet when my colleague and I got in at 10:30, everything was already shut and locked up which was a bit disappointing. There was also no night staff, and nobody answered the nighttime phone number in the welcome booklet when we needed them
Review 78:I couldn't fault the room, the staff, the breakfast; all lovely
Review 79:Hotel advertises a restaurant, which was not open on the Saturday night which I stayed. On arrival, our room had been given to somebody else, which led to a delay whilst other rooms were checked to see if they were vacant.
Review 80:The lack of cleanliness; the tired decorative state; the noise from the street and from other guests; the vomit on the footpath outside the hotel; the price in comparison with e.g. Premier Inns which for less offer much more.
Review 81:The fact that a room was available when all else in and around Monmouth had already been booked by Roundhead impersonators staging battle re-enactments.
Review 82:Of all the golf clubs in the area, the nearest and, in my book most attractive, Monmouth Golf Club, was given no mention in the Riverside's Residents' Guide. You pay your money and take your choice and in many ways the breakfast on offer, excellently cooked as it was, offers good value. However, the menu was somewhat limited and the fare offered unambitious. While, superficially, cleanliness could not be questioned there was certainly room for greater attention to detail.
Review 83:The Riverside is a perfectly satisfactory bed and breakfast facility with no pretensions. It offers a friendly and comfortable environment and, certainly in my case, a bedroom that more than met requirements for an overnight stay. Its location is perfect both for access to town and as a launching pad for visiting surrounding areas. The glorious setting of the challenging Monmouth Golf Club is little more than a mile away and highly recommended.
Review 84:The bedrooms were shabby and the bedroom next to us was a graveyard for old beds and mattresses , with no door to hide them. (The door was actually lying along the corridor, very off putting). Rooms were due a good lick of paint and needed updating. The twin beds were very uncomfortable and even though the windows were double glazed, we couldn't get to sleep until gone one o'clock in the morning because the rooms overlook the car park and outside seating area, there were people out there laughing and joking.
Review 85:The staff were excellent , they were helpful and very friendly, couldn't do enough for you.
Review 86:I stayed in room 12 and just before checking out I noticed a couple of small bugs on the bed, once home I checked and it seemed they were bed bugs. This was confirmed when few hours later when I came out in a large number of itchy bites. Avoid!
Review 87:Nice staff and a decent breakfast
Review 88:Room was rather tatty, especially the bathroom (an avocado bath? Really, in 2014?). Windows were dirty behind jammed secondary glazing, couldn't close the window against traffic noise. Restaurant didn't seem to be functioning in the evenings, but breakfast was OK.
Review 89:Great location and parking, handy for town centre and A40. Friendly reception but (as in negatives) didn't know whether the restaurant would be open for dinner. We ate instead at the Punch House in Agincourt Square, which was good value.
Review 90:Nothing. Pleased when everything
Review 91:Second time we stayed as we were pleased with everything the first time. Fab accommodation and excellent staff and service. We will be returning
Review 92:Hotel was misleading from the information and photos online. Decor was very dated needs a full refurbishment.
Review 93:Location was good, near the main shopping centre, bars and eating places.
Review 94:Every Think The welcome we recived from to boss and the staff was fantastic, down to earth and approchable it put the iceing on the holiday. Well done Riverside Hotel
Review 95:The room was very loud, there was no double glazing so you got the whole noise from the busyish road outside. The room itself wasnt particularly clean, the bathroom bin for example hadn't been emptied. Although it was a hotel there was no chef in in the evening. There wasn't a wide range of drinks at the bar, and the tap soft drinks were fairly flat. The bath was very small and the shower head wasn't moveable and so even for someone short had to bend down.
Review 96:The staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful, the breakfast was OK, with a range of cereals, grapefruit and fresh coffee and cooked breakfast. The price was OK .
Review 97:My partner was looking forward to jug of pims but they had run out fruit ! More fruit next time ha ha. This was the only fault.
Review 98:Due to my mistake on the booking dates we turned up a day early. This was quickly sorted out by the guy at reception. Would recommend this hotel.
Review 99:The staff in this hotel without doubt are the friendliest most welcoming I have met yet. As a young solo resident I felt welcomed from day one... So much so I rebooked for 4 weeks. Thank you x
Review 100:Noise and being expected to pay for breakfast. The hotel needs Alex from hotel inspector to get there and sort it out we never got any sleep the room was above the bar which seemed to be full of swearing loud women
Review 101:Nothing about hotel but location was lovely what a shame
Review 102:Attitude of staff. No restaurant facilities even though it was shown on website. Rooms very basic and not really clean. Poor value for money. The bar was occupied by numerous people ,who were known to the staff ,using bad language and rolling their own cigarettes. I would not even give this hotel a one star rating. I really feel we were grossly overcharged at this establishment
Review 103:The location and car parking
Review 104:The Riverside Hotel is dated and dirty. Our bedroom wall light did not work, the cutlery was not washed up, the bathroom was filthy and the windowsills looked like they have never been cleaned. The shower projected mostly out of the bath, therefore soaking the floor and the rest of the bathroom. The bathroom decor itself was appalling, the tiles having being painted at some point in the past, were peeling and the seal around the bath was loose. The towels, although clean, were tiny and we were not given a bath mat. Very noisy due to main road nearby and deliveries to the pub downstairs early in the morning. Cooked breakfast was greasy and therefore decided on second morning to source breakfast elsewhere! I would not stay here again.
Review 105:Location was good. Close to town centre and very convenient to us as we were going to a wedding reception just around the corner and did not want to walk back a long way late at night.
Review 106:The room was perfect all staff were brilliant and very pleasant over all our stay was very enjoyable
Review 107:All good!
Review 108:Lovely staff, everyone was very concerned to make sure we enjoyed our stay. Brilliant breakfast.
Review 109:N/A
Review 110:Friendly and considerate staff.
Review 111:ongoing friendly welcome which continued throughout our overnight stay. Clean comfortable room and facilities, and extended hospitality.
Review 112:Decor a little tired. Could definitely do with a face lift.
Review 113:Good location. Fair price for what you get.
Review 114:The peopel running this hotel were very friendly and hospitable.
Review 115:everything
Review 116:No restaurant even though website implied one existed. Everything rather shabby and run down.
Review 117:Excellent breakfast.
Review 118:Our room was quite noisy since it was right above the pub.
Review 119:Staff was very nice and it serves good English breakfast.
Review 120:we had a very happy time in Monmouth helped by the support of friendly staff.I would stay again if in Monmouth
Review 121:Rooms could do with up grading and cups/knifes/forks etc wasn't the cleanest,
Review 122:Very friendly staff
Review 123:Good value for money
Review 124:Rooms in the extension part could do with redecorating, looking a bit sad.
Review 125:Staff, service and food.
Review 126:Good venue for Millenium Stadium
Review 127:Very generous breakfast
Review 128:Bed uncomfortable Shower/ bathroom not clean
Review 129:Fantastic staff, very friendly
Review 130:The hotel room was noisy due to being next to the road and the shower had no thermostat
Review 131:The mattresses were rather saggy and uncomfortable - but the hotel is very good value for money
Review 132:The staff were really friendly and helpful
Review 133:Noisy in the evenings. Especially late evening at the front of hotel.
Review 134:Location
