Reviews for Desert Cave Hotel
Review 1:We have stayed at the Desert Cave for twenty years. It remains one of our favourite places to stay on the North-South Rd. The staff are friendly and efficient, the service is excellent and the rooms spacious and very comfortable. There's is a standard few else meet anywhere.
Review 2:Hotel is tired and needs a refurbishment bathrooms need a complete rip out and re-fit ... Restaurant was very over priced and the food was average
Review 3:Underground rooms were cool in the hot heat
Review 4:Great bar, pleasant staff. The museum was interesting. Easy access to all the shops. And it has a pool, even if it was freezing, it was most welcome when the outside temperature was 35 degrees !!
Review 5:Fights going on until 1.40am in the morning ! We were going to stay extra day but checked out earlier ! Would not recommend to anyone because of what happened!
Review 6:I was pretty disappointed overall with this hotel. For $255 a night I did expect more. I was especially disappointed with the fact we could have booked it for $150 the day we arrive but because we booked months in advance we had to pay the $255. It was ok, nothing bad to be honest, but it wasn't worth the $255 a night. The staff in the pub and the restaurant were ok aswell. Again, nothing special.
Review 7:The unique ambience of this underground hotel. So beautifully done and also the underground display of opal mining & history of Coober Pedy was really well done and interesting.
Review 8:Heavily scented cleaning products were a switch off for my wife: they were terrible.
Review 9:The pool. It enabled me to score two swims and 1600 metres in my swim club competition for February. Dining was good.
Review 10:In an area where it would be easy to provide mediocrity, the hotel goes the extra step and provides everything you could need. Good food, good service, good wine list, comfortable, clean accommodation and novel, practical underground accommodation
Review 11:The shower recess was made of the cheapest plastic; the internet did not work most of the time despite the claim that it was "Free Wifi" & that it would "probably" work underground or elsewhere - but it did not. Don't go there!
Review 12:Not much - staff rude and arrogant; very overpriced at $255.00 per person for one room. No pen to write with in the room - when I requested one that almost caused an international incident.
Review 13:None
Review 14:Found the hotel to be an unexpected pleasant stay. Great bar, museum section, clean rooms, great service, plenty of souvenirs, breakfast and lunch venue was excellent as well as fine dining. Great value for money
Review 15:Cold soft / fruit drinks in hotel cafe very expensive.
Review 16:Staff friendly and helpful, room clean, light, airy and cool ! Had dinner at Umberto's Restaurant in the hotel, food and wine very good.
Review 17:Is it possible that the vacuum cleaner was causing damage to the walls of the customers rooms?
Review 18:The quality of the food was excellent - full credit to the chef(s). The young waitresses were courteous and friendly. The manager was vigilant without being officious, and he was also helpful and friendly. The experience of sleeping underground was memorable, and this surprisingly good oasis demonstrated the potential for living in a very environmentally sound manner.
Review 19:Staff attitude, no real underground rooms, the window in the upground room was showing a wall, heaps of things we were told they can't do e.g. No room service, no restaurant on that day, no reception service early morning and the list goes on....just stay away from it if you can
Review 20:To leave asap
Review 21:The only issue was that the pool was out of order.
Review 22:Location , above ground large rooms with balcony. Rooms were very clean ( given a tough hot , dusty and windy environment) and well maintained. Bed was comfortable
Review 23:Wifi didn't work in the cave!
Review 24:We chose an underground room for the experience, it was clean and spacious and the bed comfortable. We had a lively meal in the restaurant.
Review 25:Not that I bought anything but the Jewellery store was about twice as expensive as everywhere else The wifi in the room was poor - this is because I was in an underground room - I would think the above ground rooms were fine
Review 26:The staff are fantastic The steak that I had for dinner was amazing The Manager provided some really useful advice on where to spend my day, and took the time to go through the map with me Location in town is good Size of the rooms are good The experience of no daylight in your room is novel and leads to a great nights sleep
Review 27:Not enough lighting for desk work Had to pay for coffee on top of $25 charge for breakfast
Review 28:Atmosphere in underground rooms. Decor Quiet Enormous beds Fan in room..even in winter when a bit of added circulation required. Good parking

Review 54:It's a bit rundown but ok for one night.
Review 55:Reception staff unimpressive. Showers really poor.
Review 56:Location . Underground display. Staff in Umbertos restaurant friendly.

Review 59:Good and quick reaction from the director by unacceptable acting of an employ.
Review 60:maybe would have like the walls all rock rather than have som covered up and the swimming pool to be opened later
Review 61:sleeping underground

Review 63:Everything
Review 64:Nearness to everything.
Review 65:Had to leave.

Review 69:Shops and bar
Review 70:room was clean, quite and comfortable, all the workers were very friendly and helpful
Review 71:The bed was great,as good as our own.
Review 72:Had to lug bags upstairs- no lifts! We didn't bother with going up to the restaurant, because it meant more stairs! Had no record at desk that I had paid direct deposit a month before-hand.(Just as well I had my copy of the transaction with me)
Review 73:Restaurant was fantastic. Ate there two nights food fabulous. Nice touch after dinner to receive chocolates and written in chocolate welcome back on the second night.
Review 74:Car park very muddy after a shower of rain , which affected the carpet in corridors / mud.
Review 75:Great location, but way overpriced ! Needs secure parking for overnite with gates closed!
Review 76:Everything was fantastic!
Review 77:Easy access to dining options, underground hotel room was a unique experience, hotel staff fantastic and provided excellent assistance re laundry, tour options, local information. The hotel had everything you could possibly need in Coober Pedy!
Review 78:1. Channel 7 on tv continually flickered when watching AFL. 2. Quite a few noisy aboriginal people (who obviously weren't staying there) who hung around the entrance. A bit intimidating. 3. Your souvenir area needs re stocking and price over haul eg those nice wine coolers at $29.50, I have seen around $22 in other places.
Review 79:Overall generally.
Review 80:Wasn't anything that we didn't enjoy
Review 81:Close to everything in town which isn't difficult being Coober Pedy Arrived there a bit later than anticipated so didn't get a chance to utilise everything we hoped for but we saw the next morning before we departed we enjoyed as the receptionist pointed out the exhibition that they had
Review 82:It is built in the 80's and nothing is done since. Ants in room, when complaining reception guy asks if you threw something in the sink :( Fire alarm went off at night with no reason. Unfortunately it is the only place were you can stay, the rest looks even worse.
Review 83:Most personnel was friendly.
Review 84:The service at reception could have been more welcoming and one of the walls in our room was crumbling leaving power and small stones on the floor.
Review 85:The room was a lovely expeirence. We had a wonderful meal in the resturant with excellant service.
Review 86:We have always stayed here and always have Dinner at Albertos which has one of the highest food standards of a laa carte restaurants in Australia. This is the first time we stayed undergroundin the Summer (44 degrees) and the room was too hot to sleep ( higher than the advertised 23-25 degrees. A top hotel with great staff and very good food. Thank you.
Review 87:Tired rooms in need of an update Loud music in restaurant and cafe
Review 88:Location Helpful reception staff Good food in restaurant Knowledgable staff in Opal shop
Review 89:It was a good experience and a very interesting location. The staff were lovely and the place was very clean, comfortable and had everything I needed.
Review 90:Above gound stairs needed cleaning, and the whole outside had a tired feeling about it. Needs some work to lift the hotel to a 4 star level. Dining room staff not really at a level expetced at a 4 star location.
Review 91:Underground accommodation was unique, quiet, clean. Breakfast was good and dining room food quality was very good.
Review 92:Room, in particular the bathroom needed attention, plastic sealer peeling off ceiling, shabby worn out tiles on the floor.
Review 93:Room was clean, tidy. Underground room was an experience.
Review 94:I think we were disappointed that 'breakfast' was not included in the price of the accommodation - as the cost of the breakfast at the Café was very expensive ie $15.00 for a continental breakfast is far too expensive.
Review 95:It was an experience that I truly enjoyed and was pleased I stayed at the Desert Cave Hotel because of the locality.
Review 96:During our stay,we went of a tour of a dugout and had to go deep underground to get to the living quarters.I was expecting this with you. This is not a criticism, however,we thought the room would be deeper.
Review 97:Certainly a different holiday. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean ad tidy and the whole experience was worth the long drive.
Review 98:Water in shower was only just warm but that's all.
Review 99:Underground room was very quiet, comfortable & spacious. Enjoyed dinner upstairs at the restaurant & breakfast in the cafe, very convenient.
Review 100:Just the location. We had to travel to Alice Springs and back for a funeral and Coober Pedy was a mid point rest for us.
Review 101:Excellent facilities and the staff were very helpful. The hotel was great compensation for being in such a dry and dusty location. The restaurant was fantastic, the staff so friendly and smiling.
Review 102:The coffee shop made great coffee but shut down too early in the day and the small bar operated. Why not combine the two as one or operate both at the same time.
Review 103:The room was very good. We went for the experience of being underground and we enjoyed the experience.
Review 104:Restaurant service was dreadful. Long delays. Menu size seems to bebeyond the chef's abilities. All staff encountered need to go tosmiling lessons. Providing service has no connotations of servitude!
Review 105:Novelty
Review 106:It was quite an experience to stay underground. The gift shop was nice an friendly. It was clean and had everything you needed.
Review 107:I only like to complain to make a difference. We enjoyed our stay.
Review 108:Opal mine Tour from the motel was the best value. This gave me the value for what a miner does with his Gems. Accommodation comfortable and constant atmosphere underground. Restaurant served very nice meals and good service. Bookings.com had a good deal for us.
Review 109:small bathroom but we did specifically request a ground floor room that we could park in front of which may have limited us to older style rooms.
Review 110:spacious room, impeccably clean. Capacity to park immediately outside our room which was useful as we were travelling through and did not want to lug the entire contents of the vehicle any distance.staff helpful and polite.
Review 111:About the only thing I feel could be improved on were the bathroom towels to small
Review 112:First impression the staff great we were well looked after. Bar & Restaurant top class. Car parking, plenty of room. would definitely stay again & recommend to my friends. Many thanks for a good stay.
Review 113:Fine dust from the walls/ceilings that fell on us, floor, bed, wedidnt notice this at our previous stay at Comfort Inn. Had an awfulexperience in the swimming pool, my husband a non-swimmer had no ideathe pool fell so suddenly and steeply at the deep end. He went under +panicked, I was at the opposite end, if I had not been there he thinkshe could have drowned. The info about the depth is not visible enough,it should be displayed on a sign out of the pool. I was so close to notswimming that evening, its very frightening to imagine possibleconsequences.
Review 114:Undergrpund experience, very nice restaurant with delicious food 3courses for $35. good facilities, voucher offers for drnks, petrol, friendly, helpful reception.
Review 115:Dust falling from walls and ceiling making it a bit dusty to sleep in the bed and gets the luggage a bit dirty.
Review 116:The staff were very helpful and approachable The underground room was a typical experience
Review 117:lack of interest from staff, grossly overpriced compared to comparable accommodation Poorly maintained bed was gritty as walls needed resealing
Review 118:Location and museum display
Review 119:Roof needs to be re-sealed / varnished. Spent the night with dirt falling on us. I woke up to see my laptop covered in dirt. Lucky input if back in its case. There were parts of the hotel hall ways that also had dirt issues.
Review 120:Large complex in a very good location. We were leaving early the next morning and without asking the front office manager advised she would arrange a take away breakfast for us. Then to our surprise when we return from seeing the town they were on our fridge.
