Reviews for Castello City Hotel

Review 1:Most especially the very welcoming staff -Kind attentive and informative at all times they make you feel very welcome from the first moment. Added to a very nice tastefully decorated comfortable room which was a pleasure to stay in, my only regret is that I stayed only for one night! I will return and recommend to others. Thankyou to all ☺

Review 2:The access to the hotel had too many steps and no handrail

Review 3:. The staff were helpful and the food was good

Review 4:shower area much too small and the curtain stuck to your back.

Review 5:good location next to bus station B But 20 minutes walk to the town centre and another 10 to the port.Breakfast was very good with lots of choice.Staff were very friendly and helpful.Common areas clean and comfortable.

Review 6:Wonderful service - I arrived 4 hours early, but was allowed to check in, was given a room upgrade, and a complimentary buffet breakfast. This is the third time I've stayed at this hotel, definitely not the last.

Review 7:Good value for the money. Staff is excellent and everyone seemed loyal to their hotel. Bed was really comfortable and the breakfast is just exactly what you need: small sample of everything - cereals, warm meal, cold buffet - every day a bit different. The fifth floor has a stunning view, worth to stay in for lunch and dinner also.

Review 8:I had booked a comfort double room with a bath, but was given a room with just a shower.

Review 9:View from the upstairs bar/restaurant was nice, decent breakfast, and the meals were very filling.

Review 10:The doors cannot be locked from inside. Someone came in without us taking notice too late (we were sleeping). While it was the hotel manager and thought the room was free storming in like that is kind of awkward, not to say rude/suspicious/unpleasant or whatever you may want to call it. Nonetheless, we informed the reception and hope this will be addressed in the future :)

Review 11:Clean, friendly staff and tasty breakfast.

Review 12:N/a

Review 13:Exceptionally kind staff. Upgraded my room from single to bigger at no extra cost. Great selection for breakfast. Great location for local buses to airport and near bus station.

Review 14:Good sized room and comfy beds right next to bus station B. The breakfast with a great view towards the seaside was particularly amazing. Very friendly and helpful staff at reception. This place is a bargain. Definitely a recommend.

Review 15:Horrid cheap pillows [why do so many hotels skimp on this when the bed itself was very comfortable?**], a bit noisy, clingy nylon shower curtain. Top tip - when travelling economy style, invest in your own small feather pillow if the lumpy, bouncy ones keep you awake! Easy to pack.

Review 16:The lovely bar-restaurant on the top floor with a great view. Excellent, full continental breakfast - fruit, ham, eggs, cereal, juice, yoghurt, bread, croissants etc. Very good value at €43 inc. breakfast on November 1st. Helpful staff

Review 17:Pretty quiet room despite being located in a busy intersection. Breakfast was free during my stay, and also we had a free drink in the hotel bar. Wifi was pretty stable too.

Review 18:Hotel looking a bit tired. Its not the most central - 15 minute walk to city centre. Small rooms and a little noisy (traffic), although if you put on the aircon & closed the windows the traffic noise was hardly audible.

Review 19:The rooftop restaurant offers a good view of the city. I found all the staff I encountered pleasant, helpful and polite

Review 20:A little bit noisy in the night (both from street and from neighbors), sound insulation could have been better, lacking small table and chair at the balcony. Power outlet at one of night stands is lacking. TV could be of higher quality (sygnal power is rather weak.

Review 21:Personnel is good skilled and ready to help with info, small unexpected gifts (like a free welcome wine in the restaurant), good location of the hotel, no problem to leave a luggage for day after a check-out.

Review 22:- old bathroom ( no pressure when taking shower....) - cleaning was correct but could have been better and more intensive - breakfast not bad but could offer for example more fresh fruits - noise ( coming from the floor area) rooms should be more soundproof but from the outside: noise from the street couldn't be heard at all ( triple window)

Review 23:- very good location : central (10 min from the city center) and not also far by foot from the nearest beach(+/- 20 min) - nice view on rooftop restaurant for breakfast -kind staff and helpful - taxi station right next to the hotel - good wifi connection and A/C - nice small balcony

Review 24:The shower was gross and small. Could barely fit in it and we are small people! The blankets for the beds were disgusting and visibly dirty! We could hardly stand to sleep there! Got up early and got the hell out of there!

Review 25:Almost nothing. Staff was nice, breakfast was ok

Review 26:Really enjoy having breakfast on the terrace. Good choice for breakfast. Directly opposite the bus station for destinations in Southern Crete including Matala and Agia Galini.

Review 27:The inner rooms are looking at the wall. There is absolutely no view from there.

Review 28:Good location. The bus stops very close to the hotel. Nice view from the restaurant.

Review 29:Fantastic roof top bar and restaurant with views to the sea and mountains a wonderful place to relax with good food. Hotel very clean throughout, beds firm and comfortable. Excellent staff and service

Review 30:Did not really have any bad experiences, but as a first time visitor, staff did not go that extra mile to make their hotel stand out.

Review 31:Staff was polite, room was comfortable

Review 32:the room is too small than in the booking website and facility is old

Review 33:the price and the location are good, also staff there is very helpful and nice. welcome drink is lovely, breakfast and the view of terrace r perfect

Review 34:No ramp/rails for bags - there's about 10-15 steps. No pool

Review 35:Wonderful personnel, helpful and friendly. Amazing and diverse breakfast buffet. A la carte dinner was fantastic too (steak was perfect!). Room service professional and efficient. Housekeeping kept our room neat and tidy.

Review 36:The air con was so noisy we could not use it at night. The showers were very small and the plastic curtain stuck to us as we showered

Review 37:The staff were exceptionally good and treated us with courtesy at all times. The breakfast was outstanding!

Review 38:Bathroom showed signs of aging and needed a good scrub all around.

Review 39:Friendly, helpful staff. Great location outside of the touristy area. Good for a one night layover between islands.

Review 40:Nothing in particular

Review 41:I have to follow a gluten-free & lactose-free diet & the Fifth Floor restaurant staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Really well done as it takes a weight off my mind!

Review 42:The city center is a bit farway. 15 minutes by walk.

Review 43:Really friendly and helpfull staff. It has an amazing view to the city and it is close to public transport in case you need to go ot the beach or airport.

Review 44:Nothing major to report but maybe in the future the closets in the rooms might be modernised.

Review 45:Central location - about 10 minute walk to city centre. Very friendly & helpful staff. Breakfast - great choice of fresh fruits, jams etc. great view from 5th floor dining area Rooms - very big & spacious, air conditioning worked well & bathroom was very large.

Review 46:Long wait to check-in. Gross, smelly bathroom. It was a very very rundown place (old furniture), besides the roof. In desperate need of upgrades/ a good scrub.

Review 47:The breakfast was the only redeeming feature of this stay. The staff were nice overall, but they seemed to be losing their patience when we checked out.

Review 48:We saw small insect and hair in the bathroom!

Review 49:Wifi , Location , clean bed and towel , comfortable bed , big rooms , balcony , awesome breakfast , reception was so friendly and helpfull....

Review 50:Smelly plumbing, first we were given a room that was connected to the next room with a wooden door. We could listen everything, the TV the mobile phone and conversations from the couple of the other room. We requested to change room and the receptionist was very kind and very helpful in order to find us another available room. They quickly gave us another room however that one was much smaller than the first one and the bed had a sinking mattress. We were glad that we had only booked for one night.

Review 51:Bad accommodations in general, bad room, bad bed, air conditioning sounded like a truck roaring next to you. Even when the room was changed it was not cleaned right. Complimentary wine bottle without a bottle opener. I wouldn't stay if they paid me.

Review 52:Rooms lacking in decor, nothing more special than a very basic hotel and no nice little extras in the room other than shampoo and shower gel. Very small balcony and no balcony chairs. The wall attachment for the shower was too weak for the powerful shower and wouldn't stay in place, flooded bathroom. Large hotel so the corridor was sometimes noisy at night.

Review 53:Friendly staff Nice rooftop cafe/bar/breakfast Efficient service, when we needed something we didn't have to wait Air-conditioning worked Good powerful shower

Review 54:PARKING...WHEN WE BOOKED THE HOTEL; WE ASKED FOR INFO REGARDING PARKING OF OUR RENTAL CAR. DID NOT GET A RESPONSE. WE WERE LUCKY TO FIND AN EMPTY SLOT ON THE STREET OTHER WISE WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CHECK-IN.

Review 55:BREAKFAST WAS THE BEST. STAFF VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY.

Review 56:Hard bed, small bathroom, lower floors did not have the best veiw.

Review 57:GREAT staff, thank you for good conversation and great handling =). and a super breakfast!. fiftht floor resturant is a really nice place to eat and look out over iraklio. close to town =)

Review 58:We were put with two adults and two children in a standard 2 personen bedroom, which was top small

Review 59:Rooftop restaurant, breakfast, location, the staff in the restaurant

Review 60:The shower area was a bit small and the whole bathroom was wet after every shower. The double bed is actually two single beds together. Location: it is not really in the centre, but we could easily reach the restaurants and touristic area in a few minutes walking!

Review 61:The staff was very nice and helpful all the time. The breakfast was really good with a wonderful view. The room was nice in accordance to the pictures.

Review 62:Apart from hair dryer not working, toilet seat broken, no iron which was stated in plan, all enjoyable otherwise.

Review 63:Hotel placed outside city walls and near bus station - excellent. Breakfasts were splendid as was staff. Room with view.

Review 64:The staff , most especially, thonassis, were wonderful. This is a lovely stop. The rooms are somewhat modest and the shower a wee challenging but cannot emphasize enough what a nice place to stay this was for me and my family.

Review 65:Beds were a little hard.

Review 66:Exceptional staff service from reception to catering and concierge. Immaculate rooms, noise proof, clean and spacious with balcony. Great views of ocean from room and breakfast venue. Tasty Cretan breakfast, must stay here.

Review 67:This was our second stay at the Castello. The hotel is in a great location for exploring Iraklio. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The hotel offers great value.

Review 68:The bar/restaurant on the 5th floor is not only comfortable, bus has also a great view of that part of Heraklion .. While having breakfast you enjoy the view of the blue sea .. The staff was very friendly !

Review 69:We booked a "superior"room and were assigned a very basic, standard room with old, stinky, small bathroom with horrible shower were anytime you take a shower there's a flood.heating system & toilet leaking.. Pictures are VERY MISLEADING. Staff explained the adjective "superior" was for having the balcony with seaview... except for the fact that 1)pictures in our booking showed totally another type of room; 2)the balcony had a view of the sea from very far and was right above a big traffic hub, which made it unexploitable.

Review 70:Helpfulness of the staff Breakfast on the terrace Free of charge parking in a parking garage nearby

Review 71:Drop off and pick up is a bit difficult as there is no parking space outside the entrance.

Review 72:Clean and tidy rooms. Friendly personnel. Close to the city center.

Review 73:please, put more shower gel for two pax who stay 4 nights. two 35 ml bottles are clearly not enough shower curtain is a mess. the whole shower and WC booth is flooded after just one quick shower.

Review 74:perfect value for money. location is ok, 10 mins walking distance to the port of heraklion. ideal for a long weekend stay, when you mainly come back to the hotel to sleep)) the hotel overlooks a streel with rather noisy local traffic, but once the windows are closed, it's not much of a bother. staff is friendly and helpful. view from the 5th floor restaurant is nice.

Review 75:Everything was perfect. The room was the same as in the pictures. We were staying on second floor and the wireless was decent. The hotel has a private free parking 3-4 minutes walk from the hotel. The fifth floor was the best place to see the sunset, enjoy your breakfast or have a drink at night. Thanasis, one of the waiters, suggested us some new beaches we didn't know which were awesome. Thanks Thanasis for the excellent service and the suggestions :)

Review 76:Noisy neighbours yill 545 am and poor sound insulation thru' interconnecting door Terrible access with luggage! Ramp and help promised but no good with mobility issues or heavy kit! A shame!

Review 77:We chose this for its proximity to the bus station and it was an easy taxi ride from the airport. The staff are very helpful and the place is clean and well-furnished. The top floor breakfast room and bar has wonderful views. The breakfast is pretty good by Greek standards (i.e. no proper juice, disappointing coffee but good fresh bread) On this occasion it had run out of yoghurt, which is a bit odd!

Review 78:There was a weird smell that lurked around the corridor and room. Could be old plumbing? Pillows were lumpy.

Review 79:Breakfast on the 5th floor was a highlight, as well as the complimentary drink on arrival. Castello is very close to buses and you can walk to major attractions around town.

Review 80:We got a first floor room that was quite noisy as you could hear the cars driving by. Ask for higher floors if available

Review 81:Staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and clean.

Review 82:Nothing

Review 83:This was my 2nd stay at the Castello. The 1st time, my room was overlooking a busy road, so traffic noise was a nuisance. This time, my room was in a much quieter part of the hotel - the staff had obviously taken note of my comment. They're very thoughtful, friendly, and helpful.

Review 84:For an English couple could have had a kettle in room. Maybe a couple of chairs on balcony.

Review 85:Friendly staff, nothing was any trouble. Room was clean and well aired. Ideally situated for sights and night life.

Review 86:- Old furniture with lot of wear on it. - Bad smell in the corridor. - Bathroom smelly and old. Rust on the bathroom accessories, crack on the lid of the toilet cistern. Looks old and not well maintained. Mold on the wall tiles. - Door handles old and dirty. - I found cockroach in the room!!!

Review 87:Terrace on the fifth floor on sunset is great.

Review 88:The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Bathroom was well equipped. Restaurant upstairs has great sunset views and food was also good. Staff at the restaurant were friendly. Reception were very informative with travel advice.

Review 89:- first day the given room was smelly, shower with no proper flow of the water Changed for another room but still: -small bed -small shower -not even close to what is shown on the pictures General: Had to pay if you order the coffee you prefer durinf breakfast...

Review 90:-the view

Review 91:shower was a little narrow and uncomfortable but nothing that bad in general, just a small detail worth to mention

Review 92:Everybody was very welcoming and helpful, services more than pleasing totally and stuff really polite.. surprised that waiters memorized even how i like my coffee and breakfast. I recommend it for sure!!!

Review 93:Sewer smell in our fourth floor room was overpowering. The breakfast was so-so. The yogurt tasted like glue.

Review 94:When we had a problem with the sewer smell in our room the front desk staff quickly moved us.

Review 95:The location is very convenient for the centre of Herkalion and Bus Station B, but that means the hotel is on a busy main road, so if you're like me and prefer to have your windows open rather than a/c, traffic noise is quite intrusive.

Review 96:Excellent value for money, very pleasant and helpful staff. Spacious double room (I'd only booked a single). I'd opted not to have breakfast, so was given a voucher for a free drink in the rooftop bar instead - stunning views and a nice gesture.

Review 97:Just a small walk from the city center, very clean, staff very friendly, helpful and always with a smile. Very good price considering the included breakfast, which exceeded any expectations!

Review 98:Had a hard time getting some rest and/or sleep because all hallway activity was very heard in the room.

Review 99:Large lobby, large room and nice balcony over the old walls and the ocean. 15-20 minutes walk from city center. Very Nice staff, Nice hotel bar-restaurant at the top floor. Very good breakfast.

Review 100:Room was not very cosy. Bed was terrible as the mattress was old and out of shape, blanket was shabby. Noice from the corridor.

Review 101:Very friendly staff. Nice restaurant and breakfast.

Review 102:Are you kidding me ? They are really very good people working in a very nice hotel.

Review 103:The room was very nice and spacious. The view was good from its balcony. The staff was friendly and very keen on serving every need of ours. The top floor restaurant had panoramic sea views right up to horizon on one side and green hills on the other. The breakfast we had during our stay was very nice. They'd cook anything for you if it is not in the buffet. And it will taste excellent too. The location of the hotel is excellent. You can walk to the city centre in five minutes and be among all the hustle and bustle of Heraklion or strol in streets in any direction you set yourself to feel the warmth of biggest city in Crete. And if you want to rent a car, dont hesitate to ask their receptionist who will get you a good deal on a range of neat cars. It may not sound so, but I was a guest there for about three days. They exceeded my expectation especially because I arrived in Crete after staying in Athens and in the rest of the mainland for a few days and nights. This hotel offers probably the best value for any money you'd pay them online or otherwise.

Review 104:I stayed 3 times in this hotel. They have good rooms and some rooms that are not worth the money. The crazy thing is their philosophy: They even give you one of their ugly rooms when everything else is unoccupied... Had that 2 times now and will definately not go there again.

Review 105:The entire hotel smells like cat pee. It's intensified in your room due to the stuffyness. The whole place felt run down and it didn't look like the pictures. The sheets etc seemed to be clean and the staff were helpful enough, but for us the smell was off-putting and we didn't enjoy our stay.

Review 106:Breakfast was pretty good. Nice view from where you eat it.

Review 107:A rather odd odour in corridor and bedroom on early evenings. It had disappeared by morning but was present for both days of our stay. Ubiquitous foam rubber pads for pillows common to all hotels these days.

Review 108:Bar and catering staff in 5th floor restaurant attitude and friendliness truly exceptional.

Review 109:Poor wifi signal, we had to stand near the door to get connection.

Review 110:Good location, near city center. Very nice view from 5th floor terrace. Was great to receive free drink/cocktail on coming to hotel. There is snack kiosk on the other side of the street.

Review 111:Located on a major intersection with traffic noise 24/7. Impossible to sleep with window open. Very hard to sleep with a/c running as the unit was noisy. Bed uncomfortable. If you are a light sleeper best avoid.

Review 112:Hotel is located very close to the main private hospital in heraklion, unfortunately for us this was necessary. Staff were very professional and helpful. Located just outside the walls and 10-15 mins walk from Lion Square.

Review 113:We took family room but not all the beds were comfortable. Fortunately we spent only one night there.

Review 114:Price was pretty low and the location was good enough to do sightseeing.

Review 115:Some inconsiderately noisy guests early in the morning, not the hotels fault.

Review 116:Great value, basic rooms, clean and well serviced each day. Shower a bit on the small side but is typical of accommodation in this price range. Excellent food in a fantastic bar/resturaunt on the fifth floor with great views locally. Very friendly and helpful staff especially in bar fully of Cretan hospitality. Very good breakfast, the dinner menu included a good range of Cretan food. For us a great location just outside the city walls less than 20 minute walk to the city centre or old harbour area.

Review 117:Parking is provided but is still a bit of a drag (10 min walk to the hotel). Room could use a face lift. Reception desk personnel is professional but quite impatient to wait for me to actually present my credit card. They went with the payment while I was parking the car, using data provided while making my reservation (not a big problem, but would be nice if they asked first). I actually didn't even have my credit card with me!

Review 118:Location was quite central (though still outside city walls), reception at the front desk was professional, complementary drink at the rooftop restaurant was a nice surprise, both room and the bathroom were clean.

Review 119:It was difficult to park for unloading purposes. The bathroom was a little cramped. Breakfast was limited and would have been improved with a better selection of fresh fruit.

Review 120:The room was basic, but clean. The dining area had spectacular views over the city. Staff were helpful.

Review 121:Noise from outside Noise from room next door, the room was seperated by thin wooden door. It was like being in the same room as them even quiet talking is loud. The noise problem is easily fixed with earplugs or headphones playing music either is a must!! bathroom, shower etc tired but fine for a night. Aircon unit right beside bed and directly blasting into face. The change direction function didn't work so I couldn't sleep. If I had known to put earplugs in before going to sleep and it is not hot enough outside to require aircon then the room was fine.

Review 122:Staff were great Indoor off street free parking

Review 123:smell from bathroom - really needs better ventilation, breakfast buffet a little below average

Review 124:comfortable room, good cleaning standard, helpful staff, fabulous view from roof restaurant

Review 125:We booked the hotel for 4 people and when we arrived, there was a double, a single bed and an extra bed (not a usual bed) really uncomfortable with a tiny mattress. We hadn't been informed about these conditions and we asked for a solution. However, the receptionist didn't give it to us. In addition, there was no WIFI connection in the room, only in the toilet.

Review 126:Staff had no idea about directions, very loud while trying to sleep, photos are false advertising, rooms far too small, mattresses sunkin, location needs a bus to where ever you choose to go

Review 127:Having breakfast included along with a welcome drink served in the rooftop bar all for a very good price is a great start. Our plane left from Heraklion Airport at 6.40 in the morning and the very friendly receptionist (working 24-h) served us a nice breakfast with fresh coffe at 5.00 am. That's great service! Rooms were nice and clean with working AC and pretty views from the balcony. This is a great place to stay for a night or two or even three. Do not hesitate when trying to find hotels!

Review 128:No working room WiFi, had to go to lobby. Watch the online price as it varies s bit. May be better to book first night and watch price for other nights if you can.

Review 129:Everything except the lack of room wifi! Great roof top restraint and bar, staff excellent, just beside one of the ancient city gates, airport and city bus just meters away

Review 130:It was not a good experience at all, although the Hotel is well situated. The rooms were not clean, especially the bathrooms where there was a very bad smell and the showers curtains were very dirty.
