Reviews for University House - ANU

Review 1:Dining room staff less than welcoming. Restaurant closed. Coffee at cafe not terrific

Review 2:Beautiful building with great art in gorgeous gardens. Great value with a lounge room, bedroom and balcony, and great retro furnishings

Review 3:The lack of local transport and local information. Unfortunately for us the restaurant was closed for renovation during our stay.

Review 4:The grounds were beautiful. The space available to us. The breakfasts were great.

Review 5:We have stayed at University House twice before and always find the ambiance very pleasant. This time was no exception and we had a balcony with a lovely green outlook where we had our dinner one evening - very pleasant. It is close to Civic - we walked there and we also walked to the local Palace Cinema to see a film after an energetic day sightseeing!

Review 6:Choice of sofa probably wasn't the best. Blankets and covers are itchy and very irritating. Also found the rooms to be quite stuffy unless the air con is on all the time or the windows opened.

Review 7:Location was great. Staff were helpful, nice and cheerful.

Review 8:Not the comfiest bed but still good value- would stay again. No milk in the bar fridge!

Review 9:Good value, lovely service. Nice big bathroom. Complimentary parking, quiet, nice peaceful location.

Review 10:We were not advised that breakfast was available on site and drove into Civic to find somewhere to get breakfast. It should be clearly advertised at the site, in the room and on arrival at the front desk.

Review 11:Nil.

Review 12:We loved the leafy, quiet, campus setting; the generous space of the rooms, particularly the living area and balcony; and the style and quality of the furniture. It was very well designed and built! Thank you.

Review 13:A bit 1950s; wonder whether a bigger family room was available. Restaurant closed - 27 December is bad time for a visit.

Review 14:Central to town; lovely surrounds; quiet;

Review 15:Nothing

Review 16:The location is brilliant and the tariff was good. It is a bit 1950s but that is nothing when considering the other features. We stayed at a bad time - on 27 December when the place was running quiet.

Review 17:The Fridge in the room did not work for three days finally it was rectified. The kettle jug lid was broken which was replaced the very next day

Review 18:Reception staff was very obliging

Review 19:Had my bicycle stolen from my vehicle in the hotel car park. Staff disinterested. No contact from management even if only to express sympathy b

Review 20:Location and ambience of buildings and surrounds.

Review 21:Restaurant/dining facilities and on campus store closed. Some inclusions in the room catered for only one person e.g. lounge chair, drinking glasses.

Review 22:Ambience. Lovely surroundings. Quiet. Lovely shady grassed courtyard. The building was constructed in the 1950's and had a sense of history. The overall comfort was great with the bathroom facilities having been upgraded.

Review 23:no aircon in bed rooms

Review 24:Old 80 interior design and furnitures, The location, many wild animals around the U house, quiet place yet near to city centre, parking free

Review 25:No lifts so need to carry luggage up flights of stairs.

Review 26:Spacious living area with wide veranda and views. En-suite bathroom. Windows that open. 1950s and 60s style.

Review 27:Not bad but could be better....I don't like rubbery pillows. I wanted to leave the bathrm door open to go in and out. I would have loved a toaster.

Review 28:the balcony...the location....

Review 29:Daytime reception too stuck up and not at all friendly. Evening reception much better! I believe they find it difficult to understand that they were dealing with tourists and not pestering undergraduates!!!?

Review 30:Facilities and location were great

Review 31:Noisy plumbing.

Review 32:Magnificent grounds with oak trees, ponds and lawns, quiet setting, access to Fellows Bar and Cafeteria on site, large sitting room, 24 hour reception, effective aircon.

Review 33:Rooms a bit dated but can't fault it in value for money

Review 34:Really good value for those with a family member attending ANU and of course excellent location for that purpose

Review 35:Shower door opening configured wrong to turn on taps. No soap in shower dispenser. Biscuits were stale. Breakfast was a tad pricey.

Review 36:Close to graduation venue and city. Comfy bed. Set in beautiful leafy grounds. Big sitting room.

Review 37:Accommodation was old, needed updating - no airconditioning in the rooms and toilet facilities were old, but clean. Definitely not value for money. There was no ramp at the entrance for getting heavy luggage into the Lodge, only steps!

Review 38:LOcation

Review 39:Parking is limited if there happens to be a function on at Uni House or nearby.

Review 40:Home away from home in Canberra, comfortable, well-located and good value. Free WiFi.

Review 41:The soap dispenser in the bathroom had been leaking on the floor and was empty. we were woken up at 5.00am by another guest slamming their door and dragging what sounded like a suitcase on wheels down 4 flights of stairs.

Review 42:Location was close to the city and had a good atmosphere. the grounds of were very well kept and very pleasant. The Lady at reception was helpful in giving us directions. Overall we enjoyed our overnight stay.

Review 43:Peaceful and quiet. It was nice to have cutlery and crockery so one could have a simple meal in the room. The frig was well stocked. Nothing fancy just simple comforts in an old style building.

Review 44:Be aware there are no lifts, so if you have a lot of luggage and your room is on the top floor you will have to climb stairs. Pack a small bag for this leg of your trip.

Review 45:Good location with easy walking distance to Civic and restaurants. Great rooms, very large with huge balcony. Original retro feel about this place, with Boffins still offering great food.

Review 46:Toilet in room 314 didn't flush properly

Review 47:Staff, grounds, food (went to a reunion dinner in the hall on Saturday night, and the food was to die for)

Review 48:Quiet location, away from the hustle and bustle of the civic area and traffic in Canberra, but close enough to all that Canberra has to offer. A relaxing and good value stay, with spacious room. Need to be travelling by car, although public transport close by.

Review 49:A good shelf in the bathroom to put your own toilet bag on would be good. Also struggled to get soap out of the dispenser.

Review 50:The location; the garden, the room, the balcony

Review 51:Our 2-bedroom apartment was very spacious and the setting both serene and scenic. It was very quiet and peaceful, yet within easy walking distance of the CBD.

Review 52:Signage that identifies the building poor. Spent a bit of time driving around looking for it. Toilet had urine stains. Noisey plumbing fm outside the room.

Review 53:A 15 min walk away fm city. Nice setting.

Review 54:Classic wooden furniture open windows and verandah very clean with excellent pillows and a1 quality sheets- beautiful bathroom plus handy location with gorgeous environment also renovated uni bar and live music a bonus!

Review 55:It's in a kind of time warp with many of the features from it's early days and history. Bathroom had modern shower, sitting room had ancient chairs. For B&B it was excellent value.

Review 56:The door to our balcony was jammed but the staff came to sort it out very promptly.

Review 57:The calm atmosphere and lovely garden with the water and the fish are a haven. It is a period piece with a good restaurant and a library from which one can read books. It's very good to be able to park there too.

Review 58:None.

Review 59:I left a very favourable evaluation in the café. Staff throughout my stay were wonderful. One helped me with my ipdad. It was a luxury to hear conversations, among kindred, in foreign languages, regarding diverse topics. Simply wonderful, peaceful and immaculate facility. Great advertisement for your university and country.

Review 60:No bad experiences!

Review 61:The fact that the hotel is situated in it's own grounds - we were surrounded by trees. The evenings were very peaceful. I was delighted to be met by a pipe band - what more could two Scots ask for, thank for such a welcome

Review 62:I HAD STAYED HERE BEFORE. lIKE THE WHOLE PLACE, AVAILABILITY OF CAR SPACE, VALUE FOR MONEY I was staying weityh my 25 years old granddaughter from Sydney and she liked it tool

Review 63:The TV antenna cable had been detached and the end was bare but when I put it gently back in the right spot, somewhat surprisingly it worked perfectly.

Review 64:The pleasant relaxing ambiance and the location on the ANU campus.

Review 65:Unwillingness to help with wifi connection -I did not request help as the desk guide said no help available, basically 'do not ask.'

Review 66:Fish pond and garden, large room

Review 67:I had the cheapest room which was fine but some of the furniture was tatty. It would also have been good to have an extra towel to use as a mat when getting out of the shower

Review 68:helpful staff and wonderful surroundings

Review 69:Could not understand why ASSA Fellows seemed to be accorded breakfast included but I was not.

Review 70:As always a privilege to stay in such a beautiful, civilised place.

Review 71:Lack of easily accessible power points.

Review 72:I like the location, proximity to facilities and uni. environment. Excellent value accommodation and hard to beat breakfast .

Review 73:The shower, while good itself, was a nightmare located in a very deep, raised bathtub with no anti-skid matting. Suggest two or more wide shallow steps to bath, plus anti-skid in bath. Better, a separate shower.

Review 74:Spacious well appointed air-conditioned apartment with openable windows and balcony. Beautiful tranquil surroundings. Good breakfast on campus

Review 75:Wonderful location, I enjoyed the planning of the building complex. The combination of the living room, balconey, and a bedroom, both with views of garden. The furniture complimenting the period of the building design.

Review 76:Slightly tough with heavy bags up the rather narrow stairs to first floor

Review 77:Good spacious rooms, location in a park , easy and free parking Truly nice and tranquil garden surrounding the area

Review 78:no lift if arriving with a heavy case limited dining options food poor in canteen when it is open hard pillows

Review 79:University house is in a quiet park like setting. rooms very clean price reasonable

Review 80:The showers are ancient. It's difficult to get the hot and cold balanced, and I miss having a handheld shower. The shampoo-body wash is truly awful, dries out the skin. Better to have soap and separate shampoo. the pillows are also too thick and hard.

Review 81:I've been coming to Uni House for the last 20 years, wouldn't stay anywhere else in Canberra, but it's because of location, not comfort. The lighting is good for working, though, and that's a huge plus.

Review 82:You need to be reasonable about your expectation of room fitout and amenities. It is all functional and clean however very 60's in feel.

Review 83:Good value, good location for anything on the South Side of the lake.

Review 84:Good location, free parking. Single rooms a little cramped but still comfy.

Review 85:Queen rooms very comfortable. Lovely old style decoration with modern comforts. Good value compared to other Canberra hotels.

Review 86:Would have liked a softer pillow

Review 87:calm atmosphere. easy parking. herb liquid soap especially it's fragrance. Fred Ward furniture. Boffins restaurant. Fellows Bar. Casual seating under Plane tree. Quietness. Easy walking.

Review 88:Room wasn't made up one morning and meal tray from night before wasn't taken away.

Review 89:I like the tranquil setting. Be good to have room service for meals,

Review 90:Loved the natural beauty of the setting, realised that at night one could hear every old heavy wooden door slam as guests/ students went in or out of their rooms ( all hours) no baffle on the doors' closing mechanism, or totally inadequate!. On the other hand, not being sound proofed meant one could revel in the exquisite sounds of local bird life at twilight and early morning.

Review 91:Had to move rooms after spending night in a room with no hot water - moving all our luggage up and down stairs was rather difficult and besides being upstairs the rooms are so far from the car park. Don't stay there if you are elderly or disabled

Review 92:General ambience historical feel period furniture etc

Review 93:Inconsiderate people making noise late at night and early in the morning. Mini Bar is way overpriced like most places.

Review 94:Location is handy, beautiful settings, clean and comfortable accommodation. Excellent Breakfast available in cafe. Friendly staff.

Review 95:Had to clean toilet before I could use.Sighns of previous persons left on bowl. Was a bit disappointed but the rest of my experience was excellent

Review 96:was the best experience of any stay I have ever had.Re booked for Christmas break.Thank you very much

Review 97:no lift/elevator

Review 98:spacious rooms in a lovely 50's complex. bar and dining facilities on site. nearby bus transportation into center of city. very quiet/peaceful

Review 99:It can get a bit noisy sometimes at night as people leave functions, but not a major problem, and it's only happy noise for a short time

Review 100:Location, lovely courtyard, pleasant surroundings, clean and comfortable, not like a normal hotel motel

Review 101:Great location, very quiet, free parking, very clean, great bathroom with excellent shower, airconditioned, friendly and efficient staff. Mattress could be better, but linen etc good quality. Good value for money

Review 102:The apartment is on the third floor, so good exercise after all the great restaurants and bars in Canberra.

Review 103:Perfect location, great vibe, retro-nerdy feel. Such good value. The apartment is enormous and serviced daily.

Review 104:The restraunt's Free chef's savoury spoonful. It was pretentious and not particularly tasty. Delivery of food was a bit slow.

Review 105:The Upgrade, the Lawn, the Quiet, the choice of wine, the rooms and their cleanliness.

Review 106:I really like the courtyard with its big mature trees and the fish pond with active fish and a bronze stature nearby. It is an easy walk to the centre of Canberra and the ANU Sports Centre. The full breakfast was very good and well worth the extra money.

Review 107:The windows didnt close (the latch was bent or something) so it was very cold. Also the ironing board was pretty bad, and the iron left something black on my shirt

Review 108:Great location, very spacious

Review 109:Overpriced considering it was a shared bathroom, and the decor is very, very dated. Also very thin walls.

Review 110:Stayed here for an intensive course at ANU, very conveniently located for classes and comparatively cheap for Canberra accommodation. Clean, especially considering the shared bathrooms.

Review 111:Convenient to everything, in a quiet environment. Retro feel, as a refurb of a historic building. Excellent formal restaurant, as well as cafe/breakfast area.

Review 112:the ghost that shared the room while I was there. alot of odd things happened, but I am glad it didn't take anything from minibar.

Review 113:it was close to town

Review 114:Directions,maps poorly designed . On site parking limited and is pay parking during the week . Cramped parking spaces .

Review 115:The shower when water finally got hot . The three flights of stairs to my room , with the bike chained to the handrail in the middle !

Review 116:No mention on your website that there is no lift or way to get your bags up the three flights of stairs. Not a good option for us as hubby has heart condition, asthma & emphysema. Fortunately a staff member offered to help take them up. Also bad odour from cleaning cupboard that wafts up stairwell

Review 117:Nice Large room, quiet location, lovely grounds. We had a room with a good size balcony area. We also enjoyed the meals at Fellows Cafe - very tasty & value for money with very helpful & friendly staff.

Review 118:We were on the top floor of a wing that was furthest away from the car park. This meant lugging heavy suitcases 80 to 100 meters and then up 3 flights of stairs. Also for some reason the staff member turned our fridge off when he/she made up our room after the first of our 2 night stay which we didn't discover until we found the interior very wet and our cool packs defrosted.

Review 119:Excellent bar and cafe (Fellows). Very good value for money for both food and drinks.

Review 120:The single room accommodation is a little cramped and separate from the beautiful courtyard area.

Review 121:Queen superior suites were great - the rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. Great value for a place so close to the heart of Canberra. The old buildings are elegant and the gardens beautiful.

Review 122:Not a big variety of food options. Stairs could be a problem if you had a top floor.

Review 123:Nice basic accomodation, clean had a heated floor in the bathroom that was a nice surprise

Review 124:Fly screens were broken so we couldn't open windows at night because of the flies. There is no air con in the bedroom so the air was very filthy at night.

Review 125:the room is quite clean and close to the university lake and facilities

Review 126:None. Very please. Perhaps that cafe was closed on public holiday

Review 127:Location and price for floriade compared to more expensive options a couple of hundred meters closer

Review 128:The kettle has a short lead which is unsafe as there is no suitable power point except at floor level. Pointed this out at reception their excuse ''this is a heritage building'" offered a low table (which was then placed in room). It is an obvious health and safety risk.

Review 129:Inexpensive food in pleasant café. Warm rooms. Locality.

Review 130:Please ensure the bed linen is properly washed, fresh and clean (including the covers)! A bit unhygenic to reuse the heavy covers and blankets on the bed even if the sheets are changed!

Review 131:Pillows and mattress a little on the firm side. Small bar fridge filled with overpriced and outdated items which the average traveller removes anyway in order to use the fridge for their own storage.

Review 132:Ideal location with easy walking distance to most Canberra attractions for average mature active visitor. Free car parking and free WiFi Very clean rooms with daily service. Adequate storage space Nice cast-iron bath (keeps the water hot longer)

Review 133:We got the last room which was twin share, two single beds and kettle had to be boiled on the floor and no lift for heavy luggage otherwise beautiful old building

Review 134:The garden and bistro / bar were excellent value for money

Review 135:We did find the furniture uncomfortable, the two seater and the chair but that would have to be the only thing.

Review 136:The grounds were just so beautiful and peaceful, easy to get to the city with a 15 minute walk.

The Fine Print

Please note that the restaurant is closed for maintenance from December 25 2015 until January 26 2016.
