Reviews for Rising Sun Hotel
Review 1:Our room was small, the bed must have been as old as the pub and the room had damp running up the walls. On top of this you had to go outside and walk up the street get to the room. My advice stay well clear,
Review 2:The bar was fine and the food in the evening was satisfactory
Review 3:Although the room wasn't huge, the facilities were good and the bed was very comfortable. Food was very tasty and there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. My partner (now fiance) got engaged that afternoon and we were treated to complimentary prosecco! We will definitely be returning on our anniversary.
Review 4:The tv signal was poor and the Internet wifi signal was very poor. I would imagine parking could be a problem in the summer.
Review 5:The room (7) was spotlessly clean . The shower / toilet was spotlessly clean , The bed was very comfortable . The breakfast menu was very diverse and excellently cooked. The staff were very polite and helpful..The pub was very busy and the locals were always very friendly.
Review 6:Shower-over-bath with no hook so you had to hold the showerhead in your hand. Tricky! Cooked breakfast excellent (as was dinner), but breakfast buffet fare a bit pedestrian.
Review 7:The room was great, with beautiful views, comfy bed. The restaurant food is fantastic.
Review 8:Nothing
Review 9:Lovely 14th C hotel/inn located on harbour side - great location. Excellent meals in restaurant served by helpful and friendly staff. Very good breakfast menu Lovely room with a querky sloping floor overlooking harbour. Great location for walking and exploring the area
Review 10:Our room was small and cramped, just about bearable for a 2 day stay.
Review 11:Helpful, friendly and pleasant staff / location in Lynmouth / first class dining
Review 12:Good service and great rooms with harbour views coupled with superb food in the restaurant led to a great short break. The relaxed atmosphere in the bar and excellent real ales all added to it. The whole village had a relaxed vibe.
Review 13:We had a problem with electrics, something kept tripping it. My husband had to get dressed twice to go and inform reception as no one answered the phone the first few times.
Review 14:Position was fantastic
Review 15:A beautiful hotel with loads of charterer and a perfect location. The food is top notch with local fish and produce on the menu that is changing all the time. Could not recommend this place more highly. We will be back
Review 16:Choice of meals in the restaurant were limited and on the expensive side.
Review 17:Lovely, characterful building with tastefully decorated rooms and ideal location.
Review 18:The 'sea view' was a little less significant than I would have expected for the £20 extra, but other than that the room was perfect.
Review 19:A little bit more expensive than other hotels in the area, but well worth the money for a unique experience on a great position right by the sea. I'd advise going for two nights -we didn't - as the Rising Sun is a place you just want to return to. Full of the character of Lynton, Lynmouth and the rough Exmoor coast.
Review 20:Poor phone reception, no wi-fi, no parking (although not really a problem as also no parking wardens).
Review 21:Location is good and restaurant menu was excellent.
Review 22:I found the manager to be sharp-spoken, irritable, and unfriendly. Secondly, I was not informed at the time of booking that my view for £100 per night would be of a damp flat roof and a large grey wall. Had I been aware of this I would not have chosen the Rising Sun.
Review 23:The location of the hotel was perfect. The junior staff were very warm and friendly
Review 24:No private car parking. Menu very limited if cannot eat sea food. But room small and floor sloping and. double bed rather small Ensuite small and with no hooks.
Review 25:Interesting location Menu with a couple of good choices Room with good view over harbour Access to room via very steep, narrow stairs Ensuite recently re-fitted
Review 26:The location near the harbor and train ride to Lynton was excellent as well as the courteous staff. However, the staff should recommend using the sitting room for wifi reception, it took awhile before we realized that was the best stop for the Internet.
Review 27:Staff unfriendly, sloped floor and tiny, poky little room and bathroom. When I asked if they did a vegetarian cooked breakfast the man looked at me like I had asked for roast dragon or something!! Big waste of money, only positive thing was the view.
Review 28:Not much!
Review 29:nothing.
Review 30:Every thing was fantastic from hotel staff to management/had a warm welcome from them/ very good choice at breakfast,/food in restaurant outstanding and hotel very clean and comfortable.
Review 31:It was spotlessly clean, the room was quaint and tasteful, staff were very friendly and helpful. Food in the restaurant was gorgeous. Love the rickety stairs and corridors.
Review 32:The windows in our room (7) were locked shut - had it been a warmer day, it would have been good to be able to open them at least a little. The room would be too small for a longer stay with more luggage.
Review 33:The evening meal was beautifully cooked and presented. The hotel was in a brilliant location and was quite unique - loved the windy staircases and little corridors. Very clean room. Generous tea making facilities.
Review 34:Was asked by manager if we wanted to eat told him wife and son did. He told us he would reserve us a table and pointed to it. We waited till 9:30 to be given an adjoining table. To then be told dinner has stopped serving at 9pm. Offered fish platter told them eight year old is not going to eat it offered nothing else ruined the experience checked out day.
Review 35:Location, quaint hotel.
Review 36:The bath was very tall and wasn't really practical for a conventional shower or bath. Wifi was available but not always accessible due to variation in signal strength which was not unusual within North Devon as well as personal mobile signal which was poor.
Review 37:The location was excellent and because it was always busy demand on seating in bar areas was always at a premium at peak times. However residents at Breakfast are always asked if they wished to reserve a restaurant table. Meals were excellent and we ate ourselves through the fish menu. Great range of Exmoor real ales - recommend the Exmoor Gold.
Review 38:Decor was very tired. Bedroom was in need of a coat of paint. Bathroom was pretty sad, shower head just secured to the wall, toilet took about 20 mins to fill up with water! Windows had gaps so you could feel the breeze on your feet! I think over priced.
Review 39:Food Fantastic, Location and a lovely old bar with brilliant beer!
Review 40:We stayed in bedroom 7. Could not see out of the window. We could hear the kitchen fans all the time. It was a special celebration weekend for us and the situation of the room was disappointing.
Review 41:The Hotel is lovely. The position, the customer service, the food, the beer. We managed to park outside the hotel so that worked well.
Review 42:Nothing really except the idiot who just had to light a cigarette in his room setting off the fire alarm one night. Alarms work!
Review 43:Fabulous location on the harbour. Ancient, quirky but wonderful row of cottages turned comprise the hotel. Great staff, excellent kitchen and a buzzing bar. Well appointed rooms with all the facilities you would expect but not a straight wall, floor or ceiling anywhere.
Review 44:Poor access for suitcases due to very narrow stairway but was offered help and understand property being so old.
Review 45:We liked being left to our own devises
Review 46:I could quite happily have sat in our lovely room and looked at the fabulous view all day! Brilliant food, great service and a wonderful experience - thank you so much
Review 47:Car parking could be a problem in peak season. Bar menu narrow and heavily geared towards fish. Food quality only average. Location is idyllic but you certainly have to pay over the odds due to this
Review 48:Super location and full of character. Worth having a sea view. Most of the staff extremely friendly.
Review 49:How long it takes us to get there. Apart from that, it's exactly the sort ofplace we like and we will go back.
Review 50:Staff, food, location, beer, room, the list goes on. . . .
Review 51:We were disappointed with the little choice of vegetarian food. I suppose we should have checked on the availability, there was lots of choice for fish and meat eaters.
Review 52:The room was comfortable and peaceful.
Review 53:I did not know there would be no shower - only a bath. Our room was above the bar which was noisy late some evenings.
Review 54:Friendly helpful staff and good quality food. Surprisingly there was a garden up the cliff.
Review 55:- Expensive - Wifi restricted to very small area and not available in rooms - Potentially served bad smoked haddock at breakfast having waited 40 minutes (spent following 12 hours in toilet...) - Only enough hot water for one small bath in morning.
Review 56:- Excellent evening meal - Good atmosphere in bar area - Excellent Location - Comfortable Bed
Review 57:A bit pricey - at least for March. Would accept 100 pounds per night in summer
Review 58:Very good food in restaurant for evening meal. Breakfast a bit sparse, though.
Review 59:waiting 30 mins for food and drink order to be taken in the resturant, then a further 10 mins for a drink to arrive, overall wait for food from point of sitting down was over an hour. dining room was cold as were the corridors.
Review 60:location was good and food was great even it took forever for an order to be taken
Review 61:Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing weekend exploring the valley of the rocks and the spectacular views from the surrounding coastal path walks. Hotel had a great atmosphere and we were made to feel welcomed. Food excellent.
Review 62:Unfortunately the room was a little cold... there was a radiator which we turned up, but the heating automatically went off altogether during late evening & we needed the spare blanket which had been provided.
Review 63:Lovely sea view & quirky room very prettily furnished. The food was amazing and the staff were very friendly. We have stayed here before and will do so again.
Review 64:Poor value for money as room was small and very noisy due to it's location directly above a busy bar. Significant problem with noise until 23.30. This should be mentioned in the room details before customers proceed to booking. The room fee should reflect this.
Review 65:Location and traditional nature of the building. Friendly staff.
Review 66:Was a bit expensive.
Review 67:We had really nice weekend in Lynmouth at the end of November. We had never visited the area before but loved Exmoor and Lynmouth and Lynton. We were incredibly lucky with the weather. We looked at the reviews before we booked and were happy to find the Rising Sun really was a lovely place to stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was warm and inviting. The food we had at the Rising Sun was excellent. We love our seafood and weren't disappointed with the crab which was perfect. The breakfast was lovely too. All the staff including the landlady couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. We loved the Lydford Gorge but were disappointed that the Cliff Railway was closed. Would definitely recommend. Thanks for a lovely Stay.
Review 68:Stayed in room 5, bathroom a little bit small - minor detail !
Review 69:2nd visit, plan to go again next year. Great place in a lovely part of the country. Food is excellent.
Review 70:There was no towel rail in our bedroom or in the en suite. The light switch for the bathroom was outside the bathroom door, which could mean disturbing the other room occupant at night.
Review 71:It is a beautiful old building. The staff were friendly and helpful, particularly in the restaurant. The food was excellent. The lighting in the bedroom was excellent, with wonderful reading lights. There was a very comfortable small sitting room for guests, peaceful, with no television and a lovely sea view. The bedroom also had a wonderful view. We will definitely hope to return soon!
Review 72:The position is perfect, right by the water with views to die for. The atmosphere is also manic, with low ceilings, panelled walls and that "old fashioned" hostelry feel. All the staff were attentive and helpful at all times. As for the food, well, we couldn't fault it. Everything we ordered was cooked and served to perfection. This is the place for a relaxing, atmospheric stay. Would recommend.
Review 73:There was not much to dislike but the hotel is very fish orientated so if you do not like the smell (only in the restaurant) you may be disappointed. This is being very picky and should not deter from staying/dining.
Review 74:We were travelling with a small dog and the staff could not be more accommodating providing an area in the restaurant and an ideal room. The food was especially good.
Review 75:Not getting there sooner on the day of arrival
Review 76:Lovely cozy old English Inn. Loved the charm of the uneven floors and narrow walkways. Room was spotless and really cozy. Food in the evening was very good and the staff throughout were excellent.
Review 77:Room fairly small but OK Bed was not very wide Parking is very difficult indeed and local wardens are very keen Key member of staff leaving soon No shower - bath attachment was awkward to use in confined space
Review 78:Very good food, good value Good view Good beers Convivial bar atmosphere Excellent staff
Review 79:Bedroom a bit small , although bathroom shower new and very good. Long wait for breakfast, think we were last down and at the back of the queue!
Review 80:Restaurant food, good service.
Review 81:Nothing.
Review 82:The view over the Harbour, The quirkiness of the Hotel, The very comfortable bed, The excellent food [both breakfast and dinner] and the beer, The very friendly and helpful staff, both on the telephone and in person.
Review 83:Had to leave!
Review 84:Loved the location. Great view from the room and easy walking access to all the local attractions. The meals in the hotel both breakfast and dinner were superb. Try the fresh seafood. Staff very helpful and efficient. This is a very well run hotel we'll be back
Review 85:Room was a little warm at night although the weather was a unusually still and warm.
Review 86:Room, Friendly and helpful staff, Great Food and good beers! Excellent bathroom facilities. Low beams and uneven floors made the experience feel like a place full of character which it was. Harbour location.
Review 87:Parking is a bit tricky Getting luggage up the small steps and down the corridors can be a work out.
Review 88:Park the car and forget it, this little piece of history is in a great location, views, great food, views, lovely room, views, wonderful pub, views, very friendly staff and clientele and of course there is the views
Review 89:Bedroom on the small side but made most of space.
Review 90:Pet friendly rooms. Excellent food served in bar. Friendly staff. Excellent location with sea views.
Review 91:The lite rock music in the restaurant at breakfast.
Review 92:The old world charm and the idyllic setting. A nice atmospheric old pub and a good restaurant serving a variety of fresh seafood. Excellent breakfast. Cozy bedroom with a great view over the sea, with a comfortable mattress, lots of power points and brilliant water pressure in the shower.
Review 93:Parking is difficult, we had to wait until a parking space became available after 6pm to offload bags. We ate in the bar in the evening, but our order was overlooked and we waited an hour for our meal.
Review 94:Beautiful setting, view of the harbour. Hotel unchanged in character from when I visited as a child, which was lovely to see. Food excellent, lovely bedroom, although rather small.
Review 95:Loved the restaurant, comfortable room, friendly and accommodating staff, great location. We arrived later than anticipated and all restaurants in town had stopped serving food. The Rising Sun's bar and dining room were full. However seeing our situation they were so kind to make a place for us so we could eat a lovely dinner after driving all day. Great customer service from start to finish; we high recommend this place!
Review 96:I'm 6 feet 1inch and ceilings were low but I knew this before I arrived. Bed sloped and I didn't get a great nights sleep but still enjoyed my stay.
Review 97:Food and hospitality
Review 98:Slightly inconvenient parking arrangements, not the hotel's fault, the town council needs to think up a solution.
Review 99:Great location and wonderful building
Review 100:Restaurant/bar menu lacked some less expensive options.
Review 101:Beautiful location with lovely view of harbour. Comfortable and very clean room. Breakfast was superb.
Review 102:One of our 4 rooms has a claw-toothed bath. Whilst lovely to have, was quite impractical to use, getting in and out was a chore. The bathroom was mildly flooded when showering in the small bath.
Review 103:The hotel has loads of character and old-world charm. It's location in front of the harbour has unbeatable views! Each of our 4 rooms was clean, lovely and comfortable,
Review 104:the location was perfect overlooking the harbour and the room luxurious and clean. we ate in the restaurant for evening meal and breakfast which were excellent
Review 105:The rooms are always excellent with views over the harbour. The restaurant is of a high standard with good service and wonderful food . All in all a great hotel .
Review 106:Internet in the rear rooms no good. In the pub etc excellent
Review 107:Really loved the bed. Excellent restaurant..very friendly staff. Beautiful pub. Beautiful location
Review 108:We have eaten in the bar of this historical hotel many times but have never stayed before. The staircase is tiny & winding and the floors are uneven but this all adds to it's charm. Food excellent as always. Room & view lovely. Our bathroom had a roll top bath. Very enjoyable, we'll definitely be back!
Review 109:This is a very quaint hotel with lots of character in a picturesque village. The location is ideal, right next to the sea front. The room we had booked overlooked the harbour and was extremely spacious and very well furnished. We had our evening meal in the restaurant which was very good and offered a wide range of options. I would recommend making a booking if you want to eat in the restaurant as it gets very busy, though if it is full you can still select from the same menu and eat in the bar area. Breakfast was equally delicious with a good range of hot and cold options. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again.
Review 110:nothing
Review 111:Friendly staff, excellent food, great location, really enjoyable stay all round. As a note: Overnight parking is fine as its free in the street from 6pm til 10am (+2hours so effectively 12pm). Parking in the day is a bit of a faff as there is only one public place where you can park without paying and this fills up quickly, the rest is a pound an hour pay and display from memory and again fills up quickly in summer.
Review 112:Rather a regimented time table to get you in and out of the restaurant in the evening, lighten up Tim, everyone is on holiday! Fantastic meal though!
Review 113:Location, views and cleanliness are second to none, and we loved the whole character of the pub and restaurant.
Review 114:Did get noise from downstairs customers until 11.30 ( as to be expected from staying over a pub ) but this would not deter me from staying there again.
Review 115:Waking up in the morning to wake up to a beautiful sea view. A lovely 14th century pub with very nicely decorated rooms. Breakfasts are amazing. Very Welcoming and attentive staff. Best Place in Lynmouth to stay.
Review 116:We went to this hotel 25 years ago and apart from some modernisation it hadn't really changed much. The food and staff were excellent and the setting is perfect. Lots to do around and about and lovely for our anniversary weekend. I liked the fact that we had no phone signal as well a welcome respite in this world of mobile phones and the internet!
Review 117:When booking I clicked on the box saying we would be taking a dog. On the confirmation it said I had to phone to let them know. On phoning them I was told we couldn't have the "lovely room"we had booked and would have to have another room. We were not impressed as the room rate was not dropped for a room which was not in the same class as the original booking. We paid £405 for 3 nights. The hotel does not have its own parking which I would have expected as it advertises available parking and the room rate is high. The biggest draw back for us was the lack of Internet. The hotel has broad band but it doesn't work. Unfortunately even when we are away we need to be contacted by email for work. We were unable to connect to the internet at any point during our stay. To qualify charging the high room rate the hotel needs to provide all services advertised We resorted to using another pub outside Lynmouth which had great broad band and great food.
Review 118:Good location Clean rooms. Nice staff They were happy for us to have our well behaved puppy in the bar but we couldn't take her in the restaurant.
Review 119:Parking- on road parking only and very difficult to find a space near hotel (particularly on a Saturday), an issue if you have heavy bags.
Review 120:Great location within the town. Excellent view from our room overlooking the sea/ harbour. Really nice room, clean and well appointed. Dog friendly. Food in resteraunt pleasant if a little expensive. Friendly staff.
Review 121:Nothing not to like
Review 122:Everything - great location very picturesque and historic. The accommodation was excellent, very clean and well maintained . Breakfast was very good with excellent service. We ate in thr restaurant one night and you could not fault the food and service
Review 123:6th time I have stayed at the Rising Sun over a period of 50 years and it is still a memorable experience to return. The situation of the Hotel and the friendliness of all concerned make it a certainty that we will return.
Review 124:We liked the restaurant very much. The room was nice. Could walk to everything in town. Town has lots of fudge shops. Lovely view of marina from room. They supplied us with ice for drinks in our room. Also helped us with luggage.
Review 125:Bathroom layout - difficult to use the toilet with the door closed
Review 126:Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent location. Full of character First-rate breakfast
Review 127:The toilet seat in No. 15 was broken. I pointed it out to Tim who got someone to "fix" it but it was not really fixed when the job was done. I think that a check of the basics after each departing guest would help. But you are good people and all I want to do is just fix that last little bit.
Review 128:Staff very helpful and I like the fact that you hire Spaniards, Rumanians, Hungarians and whatever. They are a lovely bunch of kids who work hard and earn their salaries.
Review 129:You have to juggle the free 2-hour on-road parking restriction with the risk of a traffic warden coming along but there are plenty of car parks nearby.
Review 130:Another great stay in this fabulous little Inn, great location, excellent seafood, well worth upgrading to a seaview room so you can wake up to the sights and sounds of the quaint little harbour.
Review 131:Room the size of a postage stamp. Small bed, although given the size of the room anything larger would have been a problem. Broken toilet seat retainer. Inability to book a table in the restaurant (two separate attempts).
Review 132:CELEBRATING OUR 44TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND HAD A WONDERFUL VISIT, SUPERB STAFF AND TEAM, LOVELY ROOM AND AN EXCELLENT CELEBRATORY EVENING MEAL. THE HOTEL EVEN SUPPLIED HOT SUN FOR OUR STAY SO WHAT MORE CAN WE SAY EXCEPT A HUGE THANKYOU.
The Fine Print
