Reviews for Shamrock Lodge Hotel

Review 1:Receptionist was obnoxious and bullying type of person and tried to blame me,the customer, for their error which was due to temporary staff member untrained for the job.I have spent thousands of nights in hotels but never rxperienced such shoddy treatment

Review 2:Although there was a microwave and fridge in the apartments there was no cutlery, plates or bowls.

Review 3:We stayed in the apartments which were ideal. Very spacious and a great price.

Review 4:Room and hotel felt very cold, only storage heater in room and took a good few hours after switching it on for the room to heat up but once it did the room was toasty just a bit dated the storage heater idea, considering the amount of people that pass through this hotel daily and the amount of weddings they could afford to update the heating system

Review 5:Hotel is situated in a nice setting on the River Shannon, Room was clean and spacious, staff at reception were friendly. We had a problem with the hot water in the shower but this was promptly sorted by the staff. Location is a little out of town and could be a little dangerous late at night on foot, 15walk to town centre otherwise

Review 6:Bed was made from 2 singles. One side was fine the other was pretty uncomfortable. Breakfast was poor, especially for the €10 each as charged.

Review 7:Nice location, peaceful and only 2 mins to town. Well decorated room and circulation areas. Friendly staff.

Review 8:No real dislike with the hotel, it is an older hotel kept in good condition

Review 9:Value for money, location, spacious with good staff and an exceptional shower

Review 10:Fire alarm tripped at night & during following morning. Reception desk unmaned during alarm so no information on procedure to be followed. I understand alarms are safety based-however bar staff were not aware of "off" switch. Disturbed sleep =grumpy guests

Review 11:Loved my king size bed &spacious room. Bar food just what I wanted on arrival & great breakfast with helpful waitress who sorted my toast colour!!

Review 12:We never got the breakfast but this because, as always, it is almost impossible to get a decent breakfast for vegans. It would be nice to have vegan options on the breakfast menu. Other than that, a lovely place to stay.

Review 13:The two girls at reception (one each on check-in and check-out) were nice and friendly and very quick at checking us in and out. The rooms, and the hotel in genera,l were spotless. The room was nice and big with plenty of room to relax. The double bed was very large and comfortable. We slept very well. The room was also well insulated from outside noise. There was also a lovely view of the autumn coloured trees from the window. The hotel is situated just on the edge of the small town, down a fairly quiet road. Everything in the town is within walking distance. No need to bring the car with you. There are also plenty of parking spaces. In general a lovely stay with very little to complain about.

Review 14:the 2bed appartment was a great idea and gave us our own space. we were only meant to stay one night but there was so much to do in Athlone that it was very late the following day when we were heading home so i rang the hotel and they accomodated us in same appartment again. we willbe back.

Review 15:When we went to apartment the smell of smoke and dirty stains on carpet and furniture we couldn't stay there so went to reception had no bedrooms left so we asked for our money back I felt the staff didnt care and wouldn't recommend for anyone to stay there

Review 16:Nothing

Review 17:The Breakfast, the bacon was too salty and the sausages were laced with pepper.

Review 18:The staff were friendly and overall was a brilliant stay in one of the apartments well recommended.

Review 19:Over for a priests funeral room was comfortable but bathroom taps were leaking when turned on quite badly , bad lighting other wise breakfast was good and lunch provided for everyone after the funeral thank you

Review 20:No free breakfast. There was no coffee in the room, just tea. The room was a bit dark and old. We had a nice view of the loading dock. We ordered a pizza for dinner. There was no one at reception when the driver came and we ended up finding him in the parking lot, confused.

Review 21:Room was large and comfortable.

Review 22:I had to pay for my stay in full immediately on check in, never the best start to any hotel experience. Also the pissed up security chap with his mates asking what I was doing trying to get in the building on my second night.

Review 23:The nice big king size bed was 2 beds pushed together so not really comfortable in the middle.

Review 24:Nice modern hotel. Very friendly staff. Excellent breakfast. Fantastic value for money.

Review 25:The only gripe I have was the lighting in the bedroom. Very dark even during the day with the curtains open. Could do with a big main light in the middle of the room. Probably being picky though

Review 26:Friendly staff, anything you want they are happy to help. The hotel is a short walk into town, far enough away so you have some peace and quiet and close enough you can be in the thick of things in minutes

Review 27:You could hear very clearly noises from the corridor and neighbouring rooms. more so than hotels we have previously stayed with.

Review 28:Excellent staff, very helpful and friendly. Lovely hotel, beautiful rooms.

Review 29:Breakfast very basic and staff seemed to be out of sight most of the time. Wouldn't have liked to eat an evening meal as restaurant very uninspiring. Lift noisy and floor moved as you got in, not good if you don't like lifts!

Review 30:Room good and clean. Could have walked into town if we had wanted to.

Review 31:wish it was a little bit closer to the town centre but that's jiust been really fussy!!

Review 32:Hotel was lovelly, and the staff was so helpful to us. Such great value for money. would stay again for sure.

Review 33:quite expensive for one night without breakfast - €250 apartment in need of some repairs - bulbs not working, door lock broken to ensuite. My biggest gripe was the tv remote not being in the room. there were no buttons to turn on the tv with the remote. it was very annoyiny to have to go over to reception to get the remote.

Review 34:great space in accommodation very comfortable beds

Review 35:A little pricey. Travelling to Athlone on business for the past 20 years and never knew this hotel existed. Greater advertising and better sinage would be great. I do hope to return again very soon.

Review 36:Lovely bedroom very quiet room. Would stay again. In line with any other hotel in Athlone.

Review 37:No spa facilities ie jacuzzi etc. No beans for breakfast, disappointing.

Review 38:Perfect location, staff are very friendly and genuine and the food was delicious. Very reasonably priced for a hotel. Would definitely return.

Review 39:Leaky hot water tap that room staff turned off when cleaning so tight it couldnt be used. But this was no big deal.

Review 40:Clean and comfy and helpful staff. Easy drive to kilkenny and back in one day. Everything in room that was needed.

Review 41:Wi-fi weak but they are working on it & were very nice about it & apologetic.

Review 42:Everyone was so extremely nice & helpful....wonderful place & bar/food was excellent

Review 43:Bar tablet we sat at was sticky and not wiped, wallpaper was torn in several places and shabby in breakfast area

Review 44:Food was excellent location was excellent lovely grounds

Review 45:Breakfast was poor quality. Maybe it was because we were early (8am on Sunday morning) but it really did not match up to the standard of the hotel nor the price tag of €149 for the night. We stayed in a premier in last weekend where I had expected much less and the breakfast was far superior. I would suggest having some fresh fruit, berries to have with cereal and yogurt, a wider selection of breads and some cold meat and cheese. If these had been present, the fry was average and would have been acceptable.

Review 46:The hotel is really lovely. Very comfortable and well decorated. The staff at reception were very helpful and called a cab for us and allowed us to check in quickly as we were rushing out again. The room a good size and very nice.

Review 47:Watch taxi drivers for overcharging. Two charged us €5, one €6 and one €7 from Church St in Athlone. Not down to hotel of course but be wary...

Review 48:Very friendly and helpful staff. I'm diabetic and take sweetener not sugar in tea. Hotel didn't have any but went and got some from a local shop just for me. Brilliant service!

Review 49:I hate when two single beds are pushed together to make a double bed which is what we had.

Review 50:Room was clean and spacious. Bathroom was nice, shower was very good. Breakfast was nice, plenty of choice.

Review 51:A noisy wedding party had taken over the Dining Room so we were advised to go to the Bar but they then took it over as well... Then later a man arrived with a PA system and Lights for late night entertainment!

Review 52:The reception and bar staff were very helpful.

Review 53:The sofas in the lounge area were far too wide to sit on comfortably or to reach the table to pick up your drink. I felt this area was designed to look good with no thought for actual comfort or practicality.

Review 54:Lovely location. Staff were helpful and accommodating.

Review 55:Whilst towels and bedding clean and changed, room wasn't vacuumed well on arrival or for next day or two.Only downside.

Review 56:Staff very friendly and helpful, good central location, plenty if nearby facilities. Quiet surroundings.

Review 57:The Hotel is in a great peaceful location and it was so easy to park every day.The Staff were always helpful and friendly. The hotel is very comfortable and the food was great

Review 58:Boiler didnt emit enough hot water for all 4 of us to have hot showers in succession...brrrr!

Review 59:Lovely spacious apartment - very impressed! Bar food was good. Staff were really friendly and helpful

Review 60:The TV was an old style type and rather let down the room. The room that we had overlooked an area where old barrels, kegs and bottles were put out, so not a brilliant view from the room.

Review 61:The room was clean and modern décor, all the usual things that you'd expect from a smaller hotel. plenty of car parking and very quiet location, so very peaceful and just a short walk into the sites of Athlone.

Review 62:there is a strong odour of staleness and old wood in the bar and in the breakfast area. for me I found this offputting.

Review 63:we enjoyed the family chalet. it allowed freedom of movement for the kids, and all the time we were together in the one apartment. ideal for small kids

Review 64:My stay was very brief. I went to the bedroom at midnight and got up at 7.00am. I had breakfast, fruit and a fry. We were not rushed, but I had to check out at 9.00am as we had an appointment. I did not check out any of the hotel facilities as we had no time. I really cannot comment fully on many questions. I certainly would return to this hotel again, I found the receptionist pleasant. Regards Helen

Review 65:I have to say there was only one negative during my stay. And that was the fact that the "double bed" was in fact "two single beds" just pushed together. This led to the beds parting in the middle during the night and we had to get out to push them back together.

Review 66:The hotel had a lovely homely atmosphere. The rooms were very well presented and clean

Review 67:It didn't affect me but our 2 boys said the pull out bed wasn't that comfortable. The bar area was a bit scruffy looking at times with sticky tables and unhoovered carpets. I'm sure it was just at busy times.

Review 68:The location was perfect for us as we were attending the community games finals in A.I.T. The food was delicious and great value for money. All the staff were really helpful.

Review 69:No aspect from bed room looking out at a wall. Breakfast room dismal. No view no natural light.. Dreary old fashioned .

Review 70:That we were accommodated at all was good on a busy Friday night. Staff pleasant . Wifi good , parking handy. Bed comfortable.

Review 71:Had booked family room got apartment which was lovely n spacious but carpet was dirty finger prints on wall blind in kitchen splashed with dirt. No sink to rinse cups microwave there but no Delph. A 199 euros n no breakfast very dear

Review 72:Food was nice but waited 40minutes for it. Staff very nice n friendly

Review 73:Lack of accessible power points (only 1!), which we thought was unusual in an 'accessible' room. View from the window was onto a wall across a narrow entry, so little daylight and inadequate lighting. There was only 1 chair in a room for 2

Review 74:Directions from the main road were excellent. Was within walking distance of Athlone town centre. Excellent size of room and en suite.

Review 75:We stayed here 2 years ago for a family party and whilst I would say the Shamrock Lodge is excellent value for money I do think that maybe its time to start a maintenance program. Our room was perfectly clean but was statring to look a little frayed.

Review 76:Ideal location for Athlone and surrounding area. All staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

Review 77:We stayed in one of the apartments so we had to go to the central lobby to recieve wifi. It would be very helpful to have wifi available in all rooms and apartments throughout the hotel. But only a minor inconvenience - and there is wifi in the excellent hotel pub which is open late.

Review 78:Facilities were wonderful. Clean and spacious and extremely comfortable. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The Shamrock is a wonderful lodge and and exceptional value for the money.

Review 79:no bad experiences hotel is just for me, too far to walk into town as i have to use stick small packet of biscuits would have been nice for tea /coffee

Review 80:staff were very good, hotel very clean good parking I have to walk with a stick asked and got room close to lift and on 1st floor room 207. bar food was very good, and plenty of it. very quiet location I would have no problem on going back to this hotel or recommending it to others

Review 81:One of the rooms we had the shower didn't work so our friends had to use our room. The tap was obviously broken

Review 82:The rooms were very big and the beds very comfortable

Review 83:Very disappointed with damp odour in room 210. The heater in room was insufficient. The smell clung to our clothes the next day. Poor response from staff re complaint.

Review 84:Good location

Review 85:We went for breakfast about three quarters of an hour before finishing time and there was barely anything left. Two young girls looked dumbfounded when we asked for breakfast!

Review 86:Nice decor, friendly staff.

Review 87:No bad experience. Checked in after 3 pm and attended a wedding elsewhere. Returned to suite in early hours of morning and after breakfast we left.

Review 88:Suite was spotless. Fantastic value for money.

Review 89:Breakfast was a bit hit and miss. Sometimes items were not restocked and when an item was requested it took ages.

Review 90:Very helpful, welcoming reception staff. Rooms very spacious, comfortable and in good decorative condition. Tea and coffee available in room was well stocked and replenished every day.

Review 91:Breakfast is not included and only found out about it when I had left and received a phone call to charge my card. Maybe at breakfast time guests should told of additional charge.

Review 92:Room was very clean and great size

Review 93:I don't have any dislike at all.

Review 94:What can I say? from the walking at the reception, we were welcome by a smile of a receptionist, I went to check the bedroom and the cleanliness, comfort and decor were everyone wishes for. It is amazing hotel and I could absolutely recommend to everyone. I loved it and definitely I am staying there again. Thank you to all!

Review 95:The only things I could possibly complain about was that the heating was not working very well in the apartment and that the double bed consisted of two single beds pushed together, this wasn't ideal for me as they separated slightly during the night and made it slightly uncomfortable.

Review 96:I thought I had booked a double room, which in fact turned out to be an apartment. I was very surprised at the value for money that I was getting. The place was very clean, the bathroom was lovely and had a good supply of hot water. The girl on reception was also more than helpful which gave me a great first impression of the place. I would definitely return and would recommend this place to friends and family. It's ideal for groups as the apartments are big and have a sofa bed in the lounge area should you need any extra beds.

Review 97:the price of beer in the bar is still too expensive, you can get 3 points of beer for 9 euro in the local bars and in the shamrock lodge its 4,70

Review 98:big room with nice bathroom also.

Review 99:The wifi doesn't work in the rooms despite the site saying it does and they managed to debit my card twice for my stay, the staff member at check out didn't check to see if there was a pre - auth in the card; thankfully I don't need the money until this drops off!!

Review 100:The food was excellent and the prices good for a hotel. The staff were friendly and it was very peaceful

Review 101:I stayed in the apartments which were part of the hotel. They were very comfortable and exactly what we needed there was 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms however I was disappointed that in the living room area there was no cooker or oven/hob as part of self catering.

Review 102:It was such good value for money. I stayed with a group of friends for a work party and it was in such close proximity to the town that we actually walked out. The apartments were so comfortable

Review 103:We arrived after midnight and our reception was organized with the minimum of fuss. Our room was spacious and all appliances were in order. The times for breakfast (8-11) were very convenient.

Review 104:no extra tea at breakfast-time, no sowers in the morning (although this was quickly and efficiently dealt with)

Review 105:good quality furnishings throughout, roomy in self-catering, great facilities - smart TV, microwave, fridge

Review 106:Beds uncomfortable. Some heaters didn't work. Acommodation basic and could do with being modernised. There was a microwave, cups and a kettle but no sink in the kitchen area an no dishes or cutlery to facilitate self catering. Wouldnt stay again

Review 107:Close to town. domestic staff friendly

Review 108:We stayed in one of the apartments and it was great size. While kitchen facilities were very good, the only downside was there was no sink.

Review 109:Location was good and good value for

Review 110:Outside looked very run down and a bit shabby. Needs buildings repainted. It gives a poor impression when the inside is quite nice.

Review 111:Cleanliness of inside of apartment.

Review 112:I was really impressed with the friendliness of all the staff, they were so helpful. The location is fabulous, so quiet & peaceful. The apartments are very spacious too.

Review 113:WiFi in apartment (in separate block) not working or very poor signal. May be better in main hotel building. TV channels selection very limited (3/4).

Review 114:Quiet, landscaped location close to town centre. Friendly, helpful receptionist. Upgraded to well-appointed apartment with dedicated parking.

Review 115:Hotel was too noisy with music at wedding/bar kept us awake then guests shouting at screaming in the hallways and banging on doors at 4am. Not acceptable

Review 116:Room & breakfast was good

Review 117:Would like to have a garden to sit in on a nice evening.

Review 118:Good value for money, food in the bar was excellent and such good value, friendly staff, very helpful . Was nice to be near a town in walking distance of hotel.

Review 119:Disappointed when I tried to book a meal in the restaurant for dinner on sat night for 2 people fully booked with 2 hen parties so the chef said no is the message I got back even though I wanted a booking for 730

Review 120:STAFF NOT VERY FRIENDLY,BAR MAN TOO BUSY TALKING TO FREINDS ACROSS THE BAR TO SERVE ME,LOCATION AMONGST AN HOUSING ESTATE.

Review 121:VERY GOOD ROOM AND BREAKFAST,GREAT BED,VERY CLEAN.

Review 122:Breakfast staff were slow and even though it was a breakfast buffet, we had to wait for ages to wait for the hot foot to arrive. Bar menu could do with a re-vamp too

Review 123:Comfortable and clean bedroom.

Review 124:Hotel in need of updating particularly the breakfast room. Need to use better quality ingredients for breakfast. One receptionist very pleasant (Deirdre I think) other lady not as helpful. Hotel in need of maintenance in particular areas.

Review 125:Area good. Rooms ok.

Review 126:The Delph and cutlery used at breakfast were all so dirty, food still stuck to them and black marks all over them, very off putting. I found the breakfast room to be very old looking, musky and not very well maintained. One of the guests travelling with us had a baby with them, who found an old empty alcohol bottle in the wardrobe, and another couple found a Tshirt from a previous guest under the duvet in their bed and there were also tan stains on the sheets. Absolutely disgusting obviously the sheets hadn't been changed, so what else hadn't? Towels?? Disgusting to even think of.

Review 127:Warm welcome & quick check-in. Clean room, comfortable beds. Lovely breakfast. Problem with tap quickly fixed by maintenance & missing light bulb in lamp quickly fitted. Only stayed for 1 night but would stay again.

Review 128:It was good value for money, room was 52 euro.Bedroom was nice and clean and modern.Hotel itself a little run down from the outside but when you get inside its fine.Food at bar was not great so I would advise anyone staying to eat out, there are loads of places in Athlone.Overall, i would say this is an ok place to stay for a night as long as you plan to go out to eat.

Review 129:Terrible food, you can tell the food is frozen -onion rings, goin one etc. and the "homemade profiteroles" not nice at all.

Review 130:They gentleman at the front desk moved me to an apartment for my night stay as I told him I had an interview the next day. There was a party on in the hotel so he moved me to an apartment so that I would get sleep a very nice customer service touch!

Review 131:The initial approach. The back of the hotel as you arrive looks awful.

Review 132:Good Reception although a bit dark. The room, bed and bathroom was comfortable, and very 1920's

Review 133:Couldn't adjust the temperature of the shower.. The lever seemed to be stuck in place... Way too hot!

Review 134:Great location, staff and rooms. Good value for money.

Review 135:Booking.com advertised a deal with the Shamrock Lodge that was too good to miss. The room was beautiful, clean and the staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful.

Review 136:There was nothing wrong. It was wonderfull.

Review 137:Beautifully upkept luxurious rooms. Very large rooms. Tasteful bathroom. The hotel is situated is a wonderdfull park like environment. Not far from the town. Excellent pub food available at the hotel in cozy area. Abundant free parking space. Large comfortable lobby. Excellent value for money
