Reviews for Grand Hotel Aranybika
Review 1:Well, nothing really, you can't expect that much for this price =)
Review 2:Location is incredible, atmosphere is nice. Actually i really liked that shabby interior it gives some interesting ambiance.
Review 3:Very old room , not clean , toilets even with sanitary label , not clean . Not as seen on booking by photos so i guess they have newer rooms , the sun in the morning is annoying you can not suth the curtain or blind it , very very very old furniture ...
Review 4:The location , the building have potential ...
Review 5:Hotel definitely was once "the first house" in Debrecen, but has lost a lot of it´s glory. Once you leave the lobby, this becomes apparent - the lift´s paneling was missing, rooms are clean but definitely very dated. A very nice place, but definitely laking attention in the detail.
Review 6:Very convenient location in Debrecen. Right at the main suqare, about 15mins walk or 5mins with the tram from train station. Everything in foot-walk distance. Very nice dining room with art-deco glass roof. Staff was friendly and helpful, room was clean.
Review 7:I understand that after years of neglect, the new owner is trying to resurrect this historic place, as a top hotel. However, at present, there is a long way to go. The furniture in the room is very basic. Breakfast was mediocre. In the dining area, there is a sign in Hungarian telling the quests not to be wasteful with the food. However, the wording is rather rude: "az étel ara a fogyasztást, nem pedig a pocséklást tartalmazza". I think that it will take another year or two before this hotel is restored to its original glory.
Review 8:The best location in Debrecen. Our room overlooked the square and the Nagytemplom.
Review 9:Avoid this hotel at all costs. The bed was terrible. There is no airconditioning in the hotel so the hotel seems stuffy all the time especially on the third floor. The lift door does not close properly so many times it does not function. There is a club with loud music at the hotel and this carries on until after 3 am. The internet only function at reception not in the rooms. when you discuss this with the manager she seems totally disinterested. it appears if the owners are only interested in collecting money not spending on any repairs. the breakfast is mediocre at best. there was nothing positive about this hotel.
Review 10:The whole hotel needs to be redone. It felt like a time travel 30 years back. Outside 35 Celsius during the day. Inside the same hot temperature day and night. The "air conditioner" was completely useless. It looked like a large hoover with two tubes hanging out through holes cut in the window.
Review 11:Very central location. I liked the breakfast.
Review 12:The cleanliness (or lack of), breakfast was very poor, AC was a joke, the free WiFi mostly does not work (it worked on some floors), staff speaks little to no English, at night it was very loud from a nearby club and I'm sure I could find other things as well.
Review 13:The location.
Review 14:Very difficult to drive to, lots of narrow one way streets our car GPS gave up.
Review 15:It's location in the centre of the City makes it a perfect for base for walking tours of the city. Very interesting Hotel, building & decor
Review 16:Our room was big, maybe formerly a suite and needs renovation. I suppose it has not been used for ages, because it was dusty and there was lots of big moths in curtains. I killed about 20. Wifi didn't work.
Review 17:Staff was very helpful. I needed a room with air conditioning and they arranged that even though the room was quite odd. Breakfast was very good.
Review 18:hot room with no air conditioning or fan, noisy at night, too clear in the morning (bad courtains), leaking water from the shower booth, bad towels, bad shampoo/ soap, poor breakfast
Review 19:Location is great
Review 20:Curtains were thin so bright daylight woke us up too early.
Review 21:Very spacious. The room was large and ceilings high plus the bathroom had a nice big bathtub. Fabulous dining room where breakfast was served. Good breakfast. Internet worked fine.
Review 22:unexpectedly noisy room was not like in pictures old furniture and very worn cleanliness is lacking parking hard to find bathroom uncleaned and very ugly
Review 23:location dining room reception room
Review 24:Poor breakfast for the price. Cleannes is good but my girlfriend is a housekeeper and she spot a few thing!
Review 25:Large rooms. Massive TV. Beautiful view from the windows. The staff is friendly and helpful. Comfortable!!!
Review 26:This is a lovely old grand building but it has seen better days; I remember it when it was the bustling, best hotel in town. Not so impressive now. Location is good, but the lack of its own proper restaurant is a drawback in a place of this size.
Review 27:I liked everything about the Aranybika.
Review 28:The location is excellent, right on the main drag. The hotel has beautiful decor, lighting, paintings, statues, furniture, stained glass windows, and a nice atmosphere. It has a somewhat grand and old-fashioned style, which really appeals to me. It was fairly empty when I was there, so it was also very quiet. The staff were always helpful and friendly. The breakfast food was okay, though not a great choice - but not enough to be negative about it. The room was enormous, probably the biggest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Despite this, it was always nice and warm. The bathroom was great too, with everything I needed. I would recommend staying at the Aranybika.
Review 29:The rooms could do with updating. I enjoyed the traditional look of the furnitures, but some things are no longer traditional, just old... The creaky, hard beds and paper thin walls meant I hardly got any sleep over my 3-night stay. The water was lukewarm at best, so a nice hot shower was out of the question.
Review 30:I was born in Debrecen and this hotel holds a special meaning to most of those from Debrecen with its beautiful exterior and its central location overlooking the main square, really close to everything in town. I also appreciated its traditional feel, very much reminding me if a bygone era in a good way. My room had fabulous views over the beautifully decorated Piac Street.
Review 31:The corridors leading to the rooms were just horrible. Such a shame! Cheap, used early 80s style renovation without upkeeping. No vision at all. Even small things that would make people feel much better are ignored such as repairing the elevator door not to bang so hard when it is closing, etc, etc. or as in my room gluing some floor pieces back in front of the balcony door. The WIFI in my room did not work.
Review 32:The hotel has a superb location. I really liked the space in the entrance hall and in the dining area. These were majestic. I also appreciated the space and the cleanness in the room. Overall the hotel had the atmosphere of a fading beauty I really enjoyed, regardless of some weaknesses.
Review 33:I guess in late 50` it could be good. But there it stay- no one take care for it for another 50 years dirty floor /walls, disgusting carpet destroyed windows bed like from prison Disco close to hotel with LOUD music till dawn poor breakfast incompetent personal first & last time we was there
Review 34:-nothing
Review 35:The corridors on the floors desperately need a fresh. The room we had was also a bit shabby. The mattress squeaking so much that one could hardly sleep a wink.
Review 36:I do not think you can find a hotel with a better location as it is in the center of the town. Staff is friendly and breakfast choice is fabulous. The tv in the room was huge and the choice of channels amazing.
Review 37:The hotel was suggested by family who said when they were young it was the "Grand" hotel in Debrecen. It is sad to see such change in just one generation of time. The poor hotel is dead - dead light bulbs, dead furniture, dead curtains, dead flies... It's too bad that management or ownership just doesn't seem to care to keep alive this little piece of history. Friends who were there too were very happy with the Centrum Hotel instead.
Review 38:In my first room I had a cockroach as a co-resident. New room was cold, no heating. Overall service in the hotel doesn't reflect the once famous brand accompanied to the name Aranybika.
Review 39:Free wifi was good and the hotel is in the centre of Debrecen, close to many nice places in walk distance
Review 40:The room we were allocated stank of damp, the bedclothes were pale grey and the curtains were covered with dust, the parquet floor was starting to break up and the decor was shabby. The lightswitch for the bathroom was loose on the wall, and the TV was not plugged in, nor was the fridge. On complaining, we were moved to a triple room next door, in slightly better order, but also with unplugged fridge and TV. The shower screen did not function properly, the floor was no better than in the other room. The beds were lumpy and creaky and in the three nights we spent there nobody tidied up not took away wet bath towels. The friend we were with was in a room that was only marginally better than oursBreakfast was a farce. On the first morning, a Monday, although breakfast was being offered for another hour, staff were moving chairs and tables about, and the hot food was in fact only luke warm. There was no fruit, although there were some yoghurts which had not been apparently in a fridge for some time. The next morning the situation was far worse, some surviving sausages were now obviously reheated from the previous morning, we asked for rolls, but were told that they had run out. The third morning was fra worse, no hot breakfast was visible. I was offered an ommlette with mushrooms. My wife was not. Our friend said that she was allergic to mushrooms, but was told it was mushrooms or nothing. The staff member them went into the kitchen and returned with a limp ommlette which had obviously been cooked long before and allowed to await its fate. My wife asked for toast, at which the waiter took a basket of toast off the next table whose occupants had left, took it into the kitchen and brought it back almost immediately, not even heated up. The only alternative was bread which was going stale and tough. We asked for more toast and it arrived, charred on one side and virtually bare on the other.
Review 41:The location was great and the building is very impressive, especially the lobby and dining room as well as the exterior. The view from the room we had over Kossuth ter was very impressive indeed
Review 42:please do not reserved this "hotel"... Unprofessional personel, rooms from photos not avaible (main gain of "hotel" is from weddings etc.), very bad condition of rooms and WC.
Review 43:location
Review 44:old rooms Broken up floors in our room very noisy airco which barely could cope with outside temperature of 32
Review 45:The location is right in the center of town When WIFI worked fast and fine, but it more often didn't work
Review 46:The hotel would be an amazing place if it wasn't so run down. Some rooms were done up and others were in pieces. Shame really, very high potential. Breakfast was the worst I have ever had, until I asked for some egg on toast. This was the highlight....
Review 47:Old features and the building it self. Need refurb in a big way.
Review 48:Lazy chambermaids Beds not made - had to ask for beds, towels and rooms to be cleaned No pool - under construction Rooms are in disrepair - broken parquet flooring, broken and cracked glass Breakfast food not appetising - yoghurt off (not on ice) Communication in English was difficult as it was limited - try and learn Hungarian, if possible
Review 49:Location in the centre plaza Good public transport access
Review 50:Everything (beside location). Advises : 1. Try to eat breakfast early, because another clients eating all and the food wouldn't "repeat" for you 2. Don't believe the elevator - it stops when you want to take your luggage out (on Sunday , when we wanted to leave our rooms from fourth floor with a small children for example). 3. Be careful : furniture and floors in the rooms very old! Etc Resume: the hotel needs a good investor!
Review 51:Location in the centre
Review 52:Good location, elegant surroundings, helpful and friendly staff, warm, comfortable room, breakfast cooked freshly when you go to breakfast.
Review 53:Breakfast only from 0800? Why not earlier. The staff need to cheer up and smile, I will stay elsewhere next time
Review 54:Huge old hotel, in centre of town
Review 55:The food is realy bad ,the car park is hard accesible
Review 56:The room is huge ,but the food and the service is very poor
Review 57:The place needs a redecoration or renovation to maintain its luxury status.
Review 58:The room was very large with a good view of the square.
Review 59:No phone in the room, floor damage, plug old, used, need renovation. The stuff wasn't friendly.

Review 77:People, city, building
Review 78:Good service was here 80 years ago
Review 79:Historical hotel in downtown.
Review 80:They don't have good facilities
Review 81:No shower curtain. Handles on doors just about staying on. Bed springs broken very uncomfortable. Expensive for the quality.
Review 82:Location.
Review 83:Carpet in room was very dirty.
Review 84:Great central location. Large room. We could open the windows.
Review 85:Clearness and the general condition of the hotel
Review 86:The atmosfera, furniture, kind staff,
Review 87:Maid service
Review 88:1.No WiFi 2.Noise 3.Old rooms 4.To many unnecessary things in the room. 5.Creaky
Review 89:Position is amaizing! In the center of Debrecen
Review 90:Air con was not very effective
Review 91:Very palatial though somewhat run down hotel. Friendly staff printed off my boarding card.
Review 92:The rooms were in very poor condition. the curtains did not pull across the window. I had booked a double room ended up with a room with 3 single beds. not many tv chancels available. breakfast was very poor it was served 8 to 10 I went down at 8 nothing was set up I did not have time to wait as had a train to catch. will not stay here again very expensive for the quality and the quality was very poor
Review 93:staff were ok English not well spoken in the breakfast room and good location needs improvements
Review 94:The beds were not comfy and very noisy, your every move makes a sound. Strange air condition device put in the middle of the room with the pipes attached to the holes in the window makes a strange impression. Definately hotel needs some better maintanance management.
Review 95:Fabulous location in very centre of the city, car-park well situated, good breakfast, nice view on the main square, specious room, overall nice atmospheare of a historical building. The staff is very kind but not really engaged excluding the hard-working waiter in the restaurant.
Review 96:We were asking for a large bed, but it was a double. The wooden floor was broken and also the curtains were damaged - this isn't expected in a 4-star hotel
Review 97:The hotel is literally in the Centre of the city, in a really nice traditional building
Review 98:the breakfast experience. On my first day, i was in the huge dining hall, candelabras and all. But where were the other customers??On the second day, no breakfast because I had to leave to go to work before 8 a.m. After that, I was sent to a café, also part of the Aranybika. Varying quality and quantity of food on offer.
Review 99:I often go to this hotel. Excellent location, good atmosphere, friendly staff, spacious rooms
Review 100:Due to further renovations the breakfast was okay but not great - no toast was available for example
Review 101:The hotel has been renovated to its past glory and is a beautiful building in a prime location. The room was great with a view over the main square
Review 102:For a start, the receptionist gives you an address for the parking thatis not correct. Instead of even number, she gives an odd one and you arelost somewhere in the end of the street with no idea where the parkingactually is. The room has nothing in it, the same goes for the bathroom, where there is only one shampoo for whatever sanitary needs one mighthave. Breakfast is poor and the overall atmosphere is sort ofdepressing.
Review 103:Location was good and the bed was comfortable.
Review 104:Hotel dated in need of some love and attention, but rooms perfectly clean and well maintained
Review 105:Hotel situated in the centre of town easy access to all local attractions
Review 106:Disaster - hair on the toilet, when we arrive, absolutely no breakfast at all, speaking only Hungarian, not kind to us, you couldn't get even the coffee in the morning ... no bread, no sausage, no eggs, and very unpolite - very cold, no heating... freezing all night..
Review 107:..nothing (maybe the location)
Review 108:The most terrible hotel I have ever been. It was very cold (without heating), toilet has ugly smell and 3 bed with 3 different size. The wall was dirty, it was impossible to close the door.
Review 109:Breakfast was not fresh. Rooms, stairs and elevator are poor and bad.
Review 110:The hall, breakfastroom and entrance of the building are great. But could be better cleaned and made up.
Review 111:I was really excited about staying at this hotel. It has a great history and reputation in Hungary. Sadly I was disappointed. At booking.com they have promised a tv and internet in the room. Beside the location that was the main reason I'vé chosen this place. There was no tv in my room and the internet wasn't working either... But still the worse was when I need to print out a few paper, so I went to the reception to ask for help. They said they cannot help me... with a printer right in front of them... That should be something they need to think about, because there should be some kind of facility in a big hotel, like this. For me this was unacceptable during my business trip. Áll together it was not worth the price for the service.
Review 112:The location is excellent. the breakfast was nice.
Review 113:Poor quality breakfast , cold eggs and generally poor quality food. no chance for decaf coffee.
Review 114:It was agrand old dame of a hotel that was tattered and tarnished but still reflecting a g.lorious past. Huge room!
Review 115:Bathroom was dated and carpet needed cleaning.
Review 116:Our room overlooked the main street and we saw the Viragkarnivel parade and fireworks from a very good position. I would recommend this hotel for the same event.
Review 117:I booked a superior room, which was confirmed by e-mail, but when I arrived, I got a "classic"room, much worst than I expected. It was old and not nice, there was no internet access, the wifi didn't work in the room. I was not satisfied and will not return for sure.
Review 118:No English speaking staff (receptionist, etc...) For a hotel, base of English should be mandatory. Very old building. Needs urgent renovation. For our 3 night stay we didn't get any badtowels. Was promised several times during our stay but never saw one. Only the smallest floor towels was their solutions. Even when we entered the room, the bedsheets were not even made. Unacceptable. A compensation for the inconvenience was not even offered. It's a shame that we have to bring our own towels to a hotel!! Very weird airco machine system in the room. The non refundable prepayment tariff wasn't charged at time of booking. We still had to pay on our arrival. Reservation conditions (payment) and description (breakfast) are not correct.
Review 119:location only
Review 120:The rooms are dirty. The bathroom is diirty and you can barely make a whoer there. There is no ventilation in the bathroom so is always an ugly smell.
Review 121:The location is absolutely perfect right in the middle on Debrecen. They have a good parking place. They have a good restaurant.
Review 122:Room was not air conditioned and it was too hot to sleep there. therefore we need to open the window and it was some festival in front of, young peopke were outside all night and screamed. it is not a hotel for the family, maybe for young people. we also saw beetles in front of the kitchen... maybe this hotel was luxury in the future but today it can not be the three star category h speotel. young lady at reception cannot speak english....
Review 123:Very small tv, not air condition, not internet connection in the room, not even in reception.
Review 124:Nice building, nice location, nice breakfast, proud to stay in sohistorical house.
Review 125:Nothing !
Review 126:Beautiful historical building. Comfortable & clean room. Staff pleasant and helpful.Amazing location.
Review 127:The food. Also expired juice.
Review 128:Swimming pool
Review 129:Avoid booking a room in the "new building" which is not new at all.
Review 130:Imagining thre hotel in the old days...nothing like today, Such a shame.
Review 131:The rest
Review 132:1. Breakfast was lousy 2. Rooms were bad, including squeeking beds and no airconditions 3. Rooms had cockroaches
Review 133:Only the location
Review 134:Central location, easy access, big room
Review 135:Late night noise in the square outside- but that wasn't thehotel's fault!!
