Reviews for Esplanade Zagreb Hotel

Review 1:Furniture is not totally my taste, a bit old-fashioned, k&k like, room dark and not that friendly

Review 2:Nice bar and restaurant area, good atmosphere and friendly personell

Review 3:Fantastic hotel. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The restaurants have amazing food and the bar has surprisingly cheap cocktails. The concierge was very helpful and we loved staying here.

Review 4:Thje one tiny thing that could still be improved is the WiFi, which was a bit wobbly and unstable, at least on my first stay here. Perhaps it was worse on the 5th floor where I stayed then.

Review 5:This is seriously possibly the best hotel I have ever stayed in, and I have had more than my fair share of 4- and 5-star stays in my days. This hotel is genuine OLD SCHOOL QUALITY. I felt like I was treated like an aristocrat in the 1920s would have been treated, even coming in my shabby jeans and a scruffy shirt. The staff is AMAZING, and genuinely seem to go the extra mile and treat you with genuine respect and hospitality. And generosity. They couldn't take my order for a few minutes because they were busy taking care of another customer? "Don't worry, this one's on the house, sir!". That kind of customer first attitude all the way through. And it never felt fake. This is probably the most positive review I have ever written, because normally I can be a grumpy guy, but this hotel really deserves the credit. best of all, while the price was still on the higher end, during off-season when I got there I paid less for this experience than I would pay for a shabby motel in high-season.

Review 6:Part of the staff was just meh. We were charged for things from the mini-bar that we didn't use, but we didn't have the time to argue about it.

Review 7:The location is superb, breakfast awesome (maybe just a bit too pricy). Super helpful when we asked for anti-allergic pillows. The room was nice, as so was the bathroom.

Review 8:The heating system in the room was not adequate enough. It never reached more than 20c.

Review 9:The old world style very well preserved and enjoyed looking. The restaurants were excellent!!

Review 10:Wifi was unstable few times, the taxi ordered from the reception ripped us off, paid 80 kuna instead of 50 kuna. The hotel management should sort this problem out.

Review 11:Luxury, very helpful staff, breakfast, comfort. Since our flight was cancelled, we asked for late check- out. They accepted without extra charge. Thank you very much.

Review 12:a swimming pool would be an added value but did not miss it much ;)

Review 13:classy place, very professional and attentive staff, elegant interior, delicious breakfast, great value for money

Review 14:was that a junior suite? no way... I´ve seen better.. so, choose higher or lower. u´ll get an higher qualty/price ratio.

Review 15:high-end building fashionable treat

Review 16:I booked the New Year package for my father and his partner and from the first booking confirmation to the arrangement of a special gift to await my father in his room, the staff were brilliant, professional and very responsive. My father had an incredible time in this historic beautiful hotel. Highly recommended for those with discerning tastes and who look for luxury.

Review 17:Everything. The room was impeccable. The restaurant was excellent, with great invention, originality and wonderfully friendly service ( without excess of familiarity...) Overall an excellent experience. We will be back.

Review 18:Staff went above and beyond to ensure we got the most from our stay. Le Bistro, which is one of the restaurants located at the hotel was a standout-our server was excellent and really went above and beyond. The hospitality of the hotel staff was excellent and they were very accomodating and helpful, going out of their way on more than one occasion. The facilities are also great. There is a small but comprehensive gym with saunas located in each men's and women's change/shower room. There is also a day spa which offers massages and treatments. The hotel is located right across from the train station but the noises weren't a bother and we were on the side of the station. The main part of town is within a 10 minute, very easy, very flat walk, otherwise there is a tram line right out the front of the hotel.

Review 19:The hotel needs to be refurbished at some point, cold air coming in from the windows.

Review 20:We like the hotel architecture and Art deco design, the location is excellent. The staff was very friendly. The breakfast was excellent with additional free a la-cart menu. Good cost/benefit.

Review 21:The bed was comfortable but could have been a little higher off the floor.

Review 22:What a grand old Dame - we loved the historical feel of the place. The upkeep is great. Breakfast was included and huge...great eggs Ben

Review 23:We haven't received our "welcome drink" although we was suppose to. Bed covers and pillows were stuffed with feathers which many people are allergic to (changed after a call to reception). TV remote was out of batteries (fixed in 20 minutes). Usage of expensive L'Occitane bath products has resulted in two of us having a lot less bath accessories and we shared small packs to take a shower.

Review 24:One of the best hotels in this part of Europe. Professional and friendly staff, nice historical location, real luxury 5 star facility. Spacious rooms with beautiful bathroom and a comfy bed. Crazy fast elevators.

Review 25:Nothing I can really think off.

Review 26:This is such an amazing property. So well mantained that as a group MD of a hotel group I was very impressed with the quality of upkeep, cleanliness and general staff welcome. This is a great hotel in terms of its grandeur and decor as well.

Review 27:A top class elegant hotel at very reasonable price. Superb location in central Zagreb.excellent staff throughout establishment. No reservations about recommending this hotel.

Review 28:Nothing - it was all wonderful.

Review 29:The staff is exceptional! They went out of their way to take care of our every need. The property and location are fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would book this hotel again if we return to Zagreb. Clearly the best!

Review 30:water in bathroom was with so low pressure that I hardly ,menaged to remove soap from my body...for this hotel ...shame....and some strange smell in the room ...stale air...probably they did not clean air condition long time....

Review 31:location....

Review 32:A fabulous bargain in a great location. Absolutely elegance at prices that would be three times as much in Paris, London, etc. A great base from which to explore historically rich Zagreb.

Review 33:sometimes the sauna is not turned on

Review 34:beautiful large room even for regular double. huge bathroom and windows that actually open! staff are always so kind, le bistro restaurant is always wonderful and has good wines by the glass. simply a beautiful hotel with old world class and charm. deserves its 5 stars!

Review 35:Don't be fooled by the old facade of the building and appearance of the rather smallish and dated feeling of the lobby.

Review 36:We had one of the suite room, well appointed and comfortable room one expects to find from a high-end luxury hotel.

Review 37:Nothing, loved it all.

Review 38:Lovely grand old hotel. Never fails to impress. We had a lovely 3 course dinner there with matched wines for each course. Although it is on the high side for Zagreb it was well worth the treat. The rooms are impeccable as usual. Massive great beds and lovely facilities in the room.

Review 39:We couldn't believe the value price for this classic hotel, whichhistorically served Orient Express passengers. It's all Art Deco andgrand-looking. Staff was nice and there is a welcome champagne onarrival. We opted to take a Segway tour that picked us up in the lobby.I know how lame that sounds, but trust me - it's really fun, andvery easy. You get to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.It was a private tour. We had a nice experience here.

Review 40:Beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. We stayed for our last night in Zagreb and it was the perfect was to finish what was a fantastic trip to Croatia. This room was lovely, beautifully furnished; large and spacious. The added touches in the room were great, including the booklet on the history of the hotel which was very interesting.

Review 41:A bit of a faulty towers experience - rickety curtain holders, unsteady bathroom fittings, no hot water on the first day, fire alarm - which turned out to be a false alarm...... and a disastrous laundry service. Still a great experience.

Review 42:Beautiful historical building with loads of charm. Excellent bar and restaurant. Great concierge.

Review 43:We did not receive a particularly warm reception on arrival - e.g. no welcome drink was provided as had been promised by booking.com and they could not find the reservation.

Review 44:The hotel is a short walking distance to the old town and it is a very elegant and classic building - many important figures have stayed there in the past.

Review 45:Staff is not very well trained. It took approx. 15 min on my arrival for any of the staff to even ask to help me. Because the staff doesn't speak great English, they tempt to sound rude.

Review 46:I loved the room I was allocated and I am very thankful for it.

Review 47:The splendour of the building, the history with connection to the Orient Express and classic Art Deco style of the rooms and public areas Location and fantastic restaurant, the food was amazing and so was the sommelier . Valet parking on site too.

Review 48:Everything was up to my expectations.

Review 49:A great Grand Hotel! Location, service and breakfast are excellent. Rooms are large size with a good bed and comfortable bathroom. The best is the Le Bistro restaurant and its daily menu: for 19 euros a 3 course lunch with a glass of wine. The best in Zagreb with a touch of old world elegance with an affordable price: 170 euros per night!.

Review 50:Everything was amazing! FIRST CLASS! We were welcomed by the staff with champagne, our rooms very impeccable with top branded products, amenities are fantastic and staff is very friendly and on top of it. Breakfast buffet is enormous, you feel like you are having brunch every morning. The staff at restaurant is very young and attentive to your needs. Fantastic way to have a relaxing morning on the patio. You feel like you are checking in to a luxury hotel that comes with lovely history! I would recommend this hotel to everyone. You will enjoy it for sure and it is worth the price you are paying. Central location, close to everything but still far enough to have the peace and quietness! It is truly the BEST in Zagreb!

Review 51:Mattress was very hard and uncomfortable (and I normally like firm mattresses). Felt like sleeping on boards. Expect better from 5-star hotel. Breakfast is not included, which we knew but still a bit disappointing.

Review 52:Very nice fancy hotel that is well located in Zagreb near lots of things (only 10-15 min walk to old city).

Review 53:The welcome was genuine and the location for a city centre trip was perfect. It's 2 mins from the central train station and in the opposite direction 5mins from the central square

Review 54:The quality of breakfast was very disappointing and at 26 euros each was way overpriced. We went somewhere else for the second day. The cleanliness of the rooms needs monitoring, especially the bathroom which should have been cleaner.

Review 55:Has all the atmosphere of a grand hotel, with beautiful art deco style. Excellent location, near the park and 10 mins walk to city centre. Ample parking beside the hotel, but only by valet. Received a very professional yet warm welcome. Staff were very obliging and made good recommendations for eating out. Evening restaurant at the hotel was first class. Lovely spacious bedroom. Very strong wifi and full selection current events channels. Totally enjoyable and relaxing visit so we will return.

Review 56:The timeless elegance of a grand old lady, the professionalism of the front desk and service staff, the classic (too classic ?) decoration of the rooms and public areas. The overall feeling of being pampered after a room upgrade.

Review 57:Nothing negative

Review 58:Beautiful building with lovely staff. The Concierge Kim had dinner booked in town before I'd finished checking in. Details such as water/champagne in reception all great and freshly attended to. A one night refresh. Job done. One of the better hotels I've stayed in in the last couple of years for work or pleasure purposes.

Review 59:My husband and I stayed here for one night only. We found it a relaxing haven located within walking distance of attractions in lower and upper towns. We loved the grandeur of the hotel, especially the furnishings and Agatha Christie ambiance! The staff were helpful and courteous and the dining room and terrace were relaxing and classy. Afternoon tea on the terrace was delightful. Hope to return.

Review 60:Upon entering this luxury property You'll feel special ambience and warm welcome from all professional staff! Spacious rooms, luxury toiletries, excellent breakfast, perfect location, nice atmosphere and much more... No reason to doubt where to sleep in Zagreb! Top recommended... btw its Halal friendly hotel! :D

Review 61:Everything! Fantastic location and facilities. Room service, restaurant and breakfast were all fantastic. Staff were friendly and helpful. I think it's very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend!

Review 62:With its wonderful history and the fantastic renovation job this hotel hits all the buttons. The rooms are large, comfortable and spotless. The staff are so helpful, polite and all round great they genuinely want you to enjoy your stay so each person does their part to ensure your stay is wonderful, nothing is too much trouble. This hotel is an oasis from daily life that anyone staying will throughly enjoy.

Review 63:It was lovely being at a hotel that had so much history (celebrating its 90th year) and that has maintained its rating as a five star luxury hotel with exceptional service. The staff were all very friendly and extremely helpful; they made our stay extremely pleasant. The hotel is also located in the heart of the city. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Zagreb.

Review 64:I didnt like the bed, matress way too hard. That is of course personal taste, nothing wrong with the bed as such

Review 65:The grandeur of the hotel as a whole. Absolutely stunning visually to look at both inside and out.

Review 66:I can't say there was anything I didn't like.

Review 67:From when we walked in the door we were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine. The staff everywhere was helpful and courteous.

Review 68:Despite of having put up the dnd sign, housekeeping insisted on banging on the door to return laundry (which admittedly was ready very quickly).

Review 69:Excellent location next to the train station and 10 min walk to main square and old city. The service and attentiveness of the bar staff is superlative. Very nice room, bed and bathroom. Quick (4 hour) laundry service.

Review 70:Nothing

Review 71:Great staff location and hotel!!! We were upgraded from a double room to a suite plus a bottle of red wine... Will definitely consider the hotel if we ever go again to Zagreb

Review 72:Wife was a bit poor in the room.

Review 73:Decode was excellent, cocktails were the best I have had in Croatia amd the rooms were spacious amd very well equipped.

Review 74:Difficulty in settling my bill the night before I was due to leave; despite asking for final bill I was directed to pay for my bar charges. Realising the mistake the following morning, I then had to queue at the desk again to settle up. This is a minor inconvenience in itself, but due to the arrival of more guests the next morning this all took time.

Review 75:The feeling that the hotel has retained its old world 1930's style and charm.

Review 76:Only criticism, Internet in public areas was fine, wifi in rooms was not so good - difficult to get connection, slow and kept losing connection.

Review 77:Lovely hotel. Deluxe rooms were very comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was superb as was dinner, also very good cocktails. Would happily stay at this hotel again!

Review 78:Beds are too soft.

Review 79:Beautiful hotel! Very close to train station and walking distance to many things. Awesome amenities and a lot of charm. Great concierge, too.

Review 80:About a 15 minute walk to main areas of Zagreb, but it wasn't too bad of a walk.

Review 81:Beautiful historic hotel in Zagreb. The staff was friendly and very helpful. They arranged a wine tasting for us in the countryside after ours had been cancelled.

Review 82:There wasn't anything that I didn't like

Review 83:It was wonderful- Staff were more than friendly, the fine-dining restaurant was fabulous and the health centre with its massages was total relaxation.

Review 84:Whilst it is intended to be more of an older looking hotel some of the floors smelt due to the old carpets and the breakfast was very poor. We actually walked into town to get something to eat

Review 85:The location was brilliant and the staff were very friendly (a common trait all over croatia) The rooms were clean despite the old furnishings and carpet floor

Review 86:the bathroom was a bit too small for a 5-star-hotel, with the toilet not separated.

Review 87:Zagreb is where I started my trip in Croatia, and it far surpassed my expectations, for I was told that their isn't much to see in Zagreb. The moment I checked in this hotel, I was enchanted by a beautiful view of the city from my room. I liked the hotel's classic atmosphere and interior, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The attached restaurant offered a variety of Cratian food and wine with very pleasant service.

Review 88:During our evening meal an older staff member came in and created a lot of fuss, he seemed to be telling the staff off. After about 5 minutes he left. Most unpleasant. The next morning we found out he was the concierge. We asked him for directions to a tourist office for the national parks/lakes and as it was a saturday we asked him he it was open. He assured us it was. It wasn't. Walking to it and back in 38 degrees heat was most uncomfortable.

Review 89:A Grand hotel. The Restaurant was excellent both staff and food. Expensive but worth it.

Review 90:We added a night last minute and they were great about finding us the room. I did feel we were given a pretty poor location (looked out on an AC unit) and the check in person was not the nicest. We had been given a discount rate over the phone for the 2nd night and she didn't want to honor it. Other than the interaction with her (they offered to move us the 2nd night but we declined.. who wants to pack / unpack every night??) all was lovely.

Review 91:The location was great. It is a wonderful, historic hotel. We were thrilled to be there-- felt like we were living a piece of history! I would highly recommend the hotel.

Review 92:Definitely not even close to the world class definition of a five star hotel. I'm not sure if all hotels in zagreb, Croatia are old on the inside but nevertheless a 5 star rating should be globally relevant and not relative to the local hotel market. It is definitely not a 5 star hotel in amenities or cleanliness nor does it warrant a high rating.

Review 93:Central location off the Central Park in zagreb and close to tram that takes you around the city and to central bus station. Ok for dealing with a night of sleep before taking the morning bus to plitvice but that's it at best.

Review 94:No swimming pool and the breakfast was quite limited in options. No freshly squeezed orange juice and no fried eggs. sorry to complain but these are small things easily and cheaply provided.

Review 95:Staff are excellent, friendly and helpful

Review 96:-air conditioning inconsistently working - drainage in bathroom sinks not working -brunch/breakfast expensive though excellent

Review 97:- excellent concierge - classic hotel with large rooms/ lovely bathrooms - great restaurant - great service overall

Review 98:For a hotel of this caliber, I was expecting full range of toiletries all they had was shower jell, shampoo and conditioner. No comb, tooth brush and tooth paste. No a minor issue for a hotel of this calibr.

Review 99:Very very close to the train station and about 10 minutes walk from the main square, eateries and bars (in the "drinking street") and other night entertainments.

Review 100:Front desk took calls during check in. A/c not running at all well in public areas. Had only carry on but saw others struggling with bags outside front door.

Review 101:Room spacious. Linen on headboard meant a clean place for my head! Pillows wonderful. Bed nice. Nice public spaces. Great breakfast, make sure to include in your rate. Quiet A/C

Review 102:That we had to leave.

Review 103:Magnificent hotel with old world charm, built for passengers of the Orient Express, it still has that ambience. Our room was huge and the ensuite had seperate shower and toilet rooms within. Great air conditioning and wifi. Staff were very helpful especially the concierge with great tips for sightseeing and special events taking place. Good location, short walk from railway station and easy, very pleasant 15 min walk to centre.

Review 104:Absolutely nothing but being charged twenty euros more for the room was soon put right,

Review 105:The beds were superb, large bathroom, huge bedroom, decor good, toiletries are L'Occitane, breakfast good selection, valet parking.

Review 106:The staff is not very helpful at the breakfast. They do not smile and made me feel they do not like to serve.

Review 107:The room is relatively spacious. The hotel is in good location.

Review 108:The male concierge was unhelpful and abrupt

Review 109:everything about the hotel was excellent , from the location, room and food. The staff were very warm and accomodating

Review 110:Concierge not welcoming.

Review 111:Beautiful classic hotel located centrally. A signature hotel to Zahreb. Beautifully appointed. Room service was spot on! Really enjoyed our comfortable but short stay.

Review 112:Performance and broken promises if the car rental company at the hotel. I do know that they are a separate business and not under hotel control but I have been waiting for my promised receipt for four days even though it was promised within twent four hours!

Review 113:The Concierge Berislav and especially Tomislav could not have been more helpful, patient and gracious. The host in the restaurant, Zoran, was perfect. You felt like you were the most special people in the world as their guests.

Review 114:We ate in the Bistro one night. While the staff were helpful and very efficent the food was a little dull.

Review 115:Attractive, historic building. Comfortable and very clean room. Excellent location for exploring Zagreb. Close to the railway station.

Review 116:A first class hotel 15 minutes walk from Josip Jelacica Square. Spacious elegantly fitted rooms. Very helpful and friendly staff. The Buffet restaurant daily menu offers probably the best value meal of a high standard in town.

Review 117:Entire stay was wonderful! This is my first choice in zagreb--always. Have stayed here many times and the people, facility, food and service never disappoint!

Review 118:I couldn't take the feather pillows home with me... LOVED them!

Review 119:Location was a 15 minute walk to old town, and 3 minutes from the trams. Fantastic service! We had a late night tour and the restaurants close by 11pm even on Saturdays. The concierge made a phone call to Gallo restaurant and it stayed open until we arrived at 11pm. And double bonus - it was delicious!

Review 120:The entrance needs serious look into it. The bell boy is unable to cover all the guests when entering/leaving the hotel. The door should be automated or revolving to enable guests to enter with hands full. During the heavy rain, with bags (or even luggage) in hands, the entrance is not sufficiently covered( we got wet). Generally, we feel the hotel is understuffed; seasoned gentleman who works at concierge was handling our luggage? It would be more prudent to employ some young bell boys, trained them well to ensure coverage for all guests.

Review 121:Staff is extremely kind, services are professional and attentative (when available). Room is beautiful and comfortable, excellent sleeping quality.

Review 122:I loved the history of the hotel, its grandeur and it was great seeing it be used - its bars, restaurant etc. I would always stay here when visiting Zagreb

Review 123:How could anyone complain?

Review 124:Nothing was too much for the staff and our room was like a palace! The comfort level of the room was beyond a ten. Location was outstanding.

Review 125:room was not cleaned when we arrived. the reception gave us immediately an free upgrade. it seemed like people dont smile in this hotel

Review 126:great location, very well maintained hotel, renewed rooms, a lot of marble

Review 127:The staff were all extremely professional. If you add to that the historical building the hotel is housed, and the central location, you got a recipe for success. Also the food was more than excellent. Truly the whole experience was above all expectations. Congratulations to that management team as well as the rest of the staff. I will come back soon!

Review 128:It would have been good to know when making the booking that there would be a daily cost for parking the car.

Review 129:The staff were all friendly and helpful. Afternoon tea in the lounge was wonderful.
