Reviews for Soma Palmshore
Review 1:The hotel has everything you need and the staff is lovel. Room was great, big with amazing views to the sea. It has a private beach much nicer than the public one. I recommend 100%
Review 2:They did not accept card payment, and they bluntly and arrogantly told me that they do not receive payments through booking.com as well(I assumed booking.com would do the payment as they took credit card details from me while booking online). After I had dismissed the Cab in which I arrived at the resort, I had to hire an Auto and go about 5 KMs to take cash from an ATM, which actually was a severe blow to my plan because I wanted to cover most of the payments with my credit card. A guy in Suit, presumably their manager was particularly very arrogant, possibly because of his poor English and his refusal on using his local language, which I was also familiar with. After checking in to the resort I was given a Kerala style room in a cottage type building. I had booked a Deluxe room which was on 2nd and 3rd floor of their main building. They claimed this was what they gave for their 'Elite' guests. But the room was quite average, they had a small TV, facilities were poor and we had company of 'House Lizards'. The resort did not have a cradle to offer, and I was traveling with my baby daughter. The breakfast was the worst I had in comparison with all the places I have been to - I think some one should tell them that, offering complimentary break fast doesn't mean that they need not be tasty and edible. One of the waiters asked me to look at those items in the buffet when I asked for a Dosa, which was part of the menu and which had to be prepared fresh as part of the complimentary breakfast. People out there doesnt have a mentality to serve, but treat guests with arrogance and complete lack of consideration. They charge in 5K to 10 bracket, but their services are similar to those offered by 2K range Hotels. Not worth for the money they are paid.
Review 3:The location of this property is good, because this is located near the beach and it is good. This is an Ayurvedic resort, this needs to be highlighted, may be people who looks for therapies and Yoga may find this place good. But this is not what we looked for from a resort, Soma Palmshore fails in all of the other parameters..
Review 4:Room was below average. bathroom is small with old fittings and accessories. water heater not working. air conditioner not working . TV is old CRT type. no blanket. flooring and room looks very old. no mobile phone range (idea, vodafone) in that area. hotel not providing Wifi connection either. complained to reception. they given another room. there also same problem. AC not working. TV not working. again called reception. they sent technician and found problem with AC. again moved to another room. we changed three rooms in two hours with tired crying 4 year old kid. went to restaurant for dinner. there's only buffet available. surprisingly, no Kerala dishes available. only North Indian items are there. but most of the guests are foreigners. i don't know how they adjust with this. and food was pathetic. visitors can get very good food from outside restaurants.
Review 5:Hotel location is very good. beautiful private beach. good swimming pool. cooperative staffs, enough parking space. only this.
Review 6:The food not that great. If you are a vegeterian, there are not too many outlets nearby where you can eat and you would end up eating at the restaurant. The taste of the food was just about average.
Review 7:Location is fantastic. Very close to the beach. Peaceful and calm. Good place for some good ayurvedic treatments,
Review 8:Nothing.
Review 9:The private beach and lovely pool overlooking the beach. The facilities are great and the location, next to the lighthouse and just a short walk to the restaurants and main beach, were excellent. The restaurant serves delicious food and staff are helpful and friendly. Rooms are clean and all have a sea view.
Review 10:Approach to private beach is not good and needs improvement Attitude of management to run down facilities like cupboards etc needs improvement.
Review 11:Great view n fantastic location. Quiet place to unwind
Review 12:The adjoining beach wasnt accesible because of lack of up keep . Pool was closed by 6pm and no one is allowed after that
Review 13:The location is perfect and the overall resort premises is good
Review 14:Sadly, the standard rooms bore no resemblance to the photos so we were rather disappointed. However, despite the late hour they found a room which was acceptable.
Review 15:All the staff, from the maid to the manager were totally fantastic! Nothing was too much trouble - even a birthday cake at midnight before we left for our flight!! The grounds are beautiful as is the pool. We ate a la carte, all our meals were excellent and very competively priced.
Review 16:The wifi was located in the lobby. That was a bummer since I was on a working vacation. Pool chairs were broken. Walls repaired but messy job. The hot water was difficult to adjust so I burned. The light from the hallway lights came through the room so I had to sleep with towel covering my eyes. I wish there was a western breakfast. I had black coffee and cereal (however they will make you an egg if you ask). We stayed in 8 different hotels in Kerala. This was the most expensive with less appealing interior. I really thought it should have been priced at $30 a night. Also the 15 minute drive to the airport was 800 rupee which should have been 500. I did not appreciate the driver telling me his monthly salary and he lived on tips.
Review 17:The location was good. Bed was comfortable. AC with a fan. Ancient TV with cable but it worked. Nice to hear the sound of the beach at night and when at the pool. The staff was excellent. Fresh sheets and towels. It was budget 3-start hotel on the beach tucked away from a 10 minute walk from the main activity
Review 18:First night spent at room 121. Avoid it! It´s awful room. "Private" beach is not private, full of garbage and is also an outflow of canal. This hotel could be max 2* in Europe.
Review 19:We liked the view from garden cottage + receptionist organized taxi transfer to Trivandrum Airport inspite of taxi-drivers strike.
Review 20:The tatty, not overly clean rooms; the poor breakfast; the litter on what should be a spectacular private beach.
Review 21:The location and the pool/grounds.
Review 22:The first room (3rd floor)we were given had a bed, a noisy fan even noisier ac no wardrobe, no chairs,no drawers a dirty bathroom with chiped tiles certainly not as the pictures,it was a cell. Looked around for alternatives and told them we would be checking out they suddenly found a room that did look like the pictures (these are only on the 2nd fl) However on the 2nd night could not sleep due to a lounge noise which kept coming on and off so loud it was causing the wall to vibrate. We called the night manager to resolve it numerous times still awake at 5am when the people next door checked out, it was their ac causing the noise. We were moved again to a cottage which was much better and quiet but by now we were into day 4 of a 7 day holiday, and exhausted. We have travelled all over India for many years and the rooms on the 1st and 3rd floors of Somapalmshore are the most disgusting we have any we have encountered certainly not holiday stnd there was nothing in them but a bed and side table. It ruined the start to out India tour and we were offered no compensation for our inconvenience - avoid it there are much nicer and cheaper places to stay.
Review 23:Location, close to restaurants and light house beach. Staff, friendly and helpful.
Review 24:1) Entrance to private beach 2) Wifi should be little bit more powerful so that people in lawn can access it. 3) Response of staff when there are breakfast items finishes. 4) Breakfast buffet could have been better Bathroom fittings has green rust on it which should be cleaned / maintained.
Review 25:1) Private beach 2) Good location near Light house 3) Very friendly staff 4) Very green and nature stuffed 5)* House Keeping old man Dasan was really friendly and polite and was doing his job with 100% perfection. 6)* Lady at the reception was so friendly and nice she even allowed us for late checkout and helped us in anything we asked. If you are booking private Hut then there is nothing to complaint as such. We really love this place to stay ans will plan to stay here only every time on holidays in kovalam.
Review 26:Breakfast buffet could have been better
Review 27:Excellent location. Private access to Beach Great view from the sit out. Clean bathroom Spacious room Will maintained swimming pool Decent food at the restaurant. Easy access to the main kovalam Beach
Review 28:A lot of stairs inside and outside of hotel made it difficult for someone with knee problems. Some trouble with double charging which was finally resolved after a lot of intervention. Breakfast restaurant a bit "messy". A lot of agressive birds made it difficult to use balcony for coffee breaks. Very limited amounts of wardrobes.
Review 29:Relatively good location, Nice pool with shading palms. Nice balcony with sea view.
Review 30:The fact that indian guests are allowed to use the pool wearing their clothes, while the house rules state that swimwear is required. It makes the pool unacceptable for other guests.
Review 31:You would not expect from a 3 star hotel in India to be a place that meets your needs for comfort, reasonable cleanliness etc, but Soma Palm is such a place . In addition staff is friendly and does everything to please you. For those who like Indian food it could be nice choise.
Review 32:Non-availability of a lift and the number of stairs was excruciating given that I had elderly parents with me and I wasn't doing too well health wise.
Review 33:The view from my room and the ambience.
Review 34:WATER SHOULD BE SERVED FOR BREAKFAST IT IS NOT SERVED MOREOVER THE WATER BOOTH WITH WATER AND GLASS AT ONE END INSTEAD IT HAS TO BE IN CENTER IF IT IS NOT TO BE SERVED
Review 35:THE AMBIENCE THE STAFF AT RECEPTION THE SWIMMING POOL THE NATURE AROUND
Review 36:1. Rates of food were little unrealistic. Also charged 10% extra on room services... 2. Geyser was not working...
Review 37:I stayed there in Room no. 110 (Cottage) 1. Excellent Cottage - Neat n clean. 2. One of the best location - Great scenic beauty (Sea view n Garden view) 3. Very supportive staff
Review 38:Our cabin by the sea
Review 39:No signal inside the room and Cell cab not allowed inside the hotel premises
Review 40:View only
Review 41:Beds extremely uncomfortable, breakfast basic and unhelpful staff
Review 42:Next to the beach, close to local restaurants and shops, pool.
Review 43:Break fast is not upto the standards.shuold improve.
Review 44:It is located right on the shore.hotel has full of greenary.enjoyed stay.
Review 45:The beach below the hotel
Review 46:Very nice view & the biggest balconies in the room ever seen.
Review 47:First class service and facilities Well worth going too
Review 48:Furnishings can be improved Bathroom is not that great
Review 49:Access to Beach Good Ocean View Good food
Review 50:room , bed , staff , food was badddd....
Review 51:nothing
Review 52:No controll on swimming pool.other guests were letting there children to urinate on the shower place at pool.no dress code, men were in pool with underwear, very unhygienic.room bathroom was small and shower place had a curtain which was not clean.no lifts in hotel for older or people with joint issues.
Review 53:Location was good, close to beach.Good sea view from room.Good breakfast.
Review 54:Contrary to the description given, the hut does not come with ironing facilities or a hair dryer. However, the hotel provides a reasonably priced laundry and ironing service, if needed.
Review 55:We stayed in the stand alone hut (cottage) with its own garden area with hammock, table, chairs and sun lounger over-looking the beach. The view was beautiful, we had some privacy and the location is great. We awoke and fell asleep each day to the sound of the waves. The beach is just at the bottom of the pretty garden. It is a quiet beach. The main Lighthouse Beach is just a few minutes walk down the hill where there are numerous restaurants and shops. We ate breakfast at the hotel (you can sit outside or inside) - a mix of English and South Indian foods. Each day there was water melon, pineapple or papaya juice, cereal, porridge, scrambled egg, fresh cut fruit (e.g. water melon, pineapple), bananas, toast, eggs made to order (e.g. plain or masala omelette, fried eggs), plus five hot Indian dishes. For example, idli, channa masala, batura, pooris, coconut pancakes, dosas plus sambar and coconut chutney, appam, and many others. There is a complimentary English language newspaper each day and a complimentary bottle of water. The room is cleaned each day, plus clean towells provided. There is Internet access in the reception where there is ample seating. On the third floor of the hotel there is Ayurvedic massage and a yoga class is held twice a day at 7.30 - 9am and 4.30 - 6pm for 350 rupees (£3.50) per class. The swimming pool is clean. There is 24 hour security both at the front of the hotel and in the hotel garden. I would recommend staying here rather than on Lighthouse Beach itself. It is a more beautiful and peaceful setting.
Review 56:lack of storage space in the room & also I had to ask for a fridge which was advertised in the details of the room.
Review 57:the friendliness & helpfulness of all staff was exceptional.Sindhle & Malu stood out but also a special mention to the manager & I think the guy who was the housekeeper always had the time of day for a chat with you. Also a very pleasing fact was bed linen & towels were changed every day.I on behalf of my wife would like to thank all for a very splendid stay.
Review 58:Room service very chaotic. Often no response. Lunchtime meal service eratic. Can take 50 minutes to get served.
Review 59:Good location, very peaceful. We had a cottage which was brilliant. The private beach is wonderful.
Review 60:We booked 4 Larger size De-Lux sea view rooms. We were given 3 larger rooms and 1 small corner room, when we complained we were moved to an even smaller room but with a better bathroom. It took 3 days to get the room that we had booked, as a result the first three days of our holiday were very stressful. We had the impression that the room was wanted for other guests. We booked in August 2013 and we should have got what we booked as per our booking form. We were charged the full price for the smaller room as our reciept shows
Review 61:Excellant position, best in Kovallom. Light and airey Hotel with a very nice pool and steps to the private beach.Friendly staff and we would return.
Review 62:Rooms not to the standard, the money which we pay. Pl keep room clean n Bathroom should be in perfect condition. Very bad experence, so far bathroom r concern.
Review 63:Good View.
Review 64:I didn't like the fact that we had to stay at this hotel only for 6days. Should've stayed more ;-)
Review 65:We liked everything about this hotel. We spent 6 lovely days at thishotel. The food was very nice, especially the grilled tiger prawns. Thestaff was very supportive. The guys at the reception were very friendlyand immensely helpful. It was raining one day and we were swimming inthe sea, and the guy from the reception upon getting some informationabout the cars we had booked came running to the beach to notify us. Hedidn't think of wetting his white shirt in the rain - all he wantedwas to help us. Thank you, mate. I am very sorry that I forgot yourname. By the way, the hotel manager is a very nice guy as well - alwaysfriendly and ready to give you a smile. Thank you, guy for making ourstay wonderful.
Review 66:It would be nice to have wi-fi in the room in this type of establishment. The food was good but not excellent, many guests did not eat in the restaurant in the evening.
Review 67:I liked everything about this place. It was a little piece of Paradise. The staff were welcoming and could not do enough to help. The treatments were also good but not quite the best I have received on this trip
Review 68:Too many steps to go down to the beach, more difficult getting back up from the beach. Possibly requires more in house activities to keep guests occupied during the day
Review 69:Very relaxing, good Ayurvedic treatment facility & professional & friendly staff.
Review 70:pool is very small, kind of children pool, old building,in the room old TV set, not a good bath room...
Review 71:beautiful view from bolcony, food, location wise, nice small beach
Review 72:The rooms need a complete revamp, there a bit like a 70'scampsite..looked nothing like they did on line...said it came withkettle and complementry tea/coffee (we never received that despiteasking twice a day everyday),we had a infestation of flying insects andI mean in the scores,in the first room we went to but demanded a newroom which the staff obliged(insect free).. Can't fault thefood, very nice, staff helpful and nice, view from both rooms and restaurant-flawless.. Don't rate the 'massage',went up there for anhour just to be stripped naked by young boy bout 18 and rubbed in withoil-and I mean lightly rubbed-no sign of massage at all.. Room-1*Massage -0* Food -3/4* Staff 4* View/setting 4*
Review 73:The setting/location of the hotel was the best part of our 4day soma stay
Review 74:Only complaint - breakfast is ok but functional. Seems to be plenty of local/Indian breakfast options but for Western tastes it could just do with one or two more options to add to your plate - eggs, toast or porridge about your options, even some tomatoes or beans would have been good. But at the end of the day it's included so if you want gourmet the cafes are five minutes away.
Review 75:Excellent hotel. Was a bit worried at first as you go to India with the impression that facilities might be a bit rough around the edges, but honestly no complaints - good rooms and staff, great views, good size pool. Also being within walking distance of the busy Lighthouse Beach area but having access to a (pretty much) private beach is a HUGE plus.
Review 76:A/c problem in both rooms all 3 days had to call staff to repair. Every time it was taking one hour plus to repair.
Review 77:Excellent resort lovely location and helping staff

Review 86:Poor restaurant food & service
Review 87:Good location, private beach
Review 88:The "double deluxe" room was poor, the hallways were dark and dirty..
Review 89:The dinner buffet, the pool, the private beach.
Review 90:everything was as expected
Review 91:neat , friendly and efficient staff. well located and good value for the price
Review 92:the food the friendliness of the staff
