Reviews for Gainsborough Lodge

Review 1:Narrow stairs and no lift. No breakfast owing to family bereavement.

Review 2:Location convenient for Airport and a good restaurant in Horley. Good value basic en suite bedroom

Review 3:My plug hole stopper got stuck and no way of getting it out! Can hear people above stomping around - but difficult to avoid that on these trips!

Review 4:Friendly staff and comfy room

Review 5:No details given of wifi, ideally a bite in the room. Found the login and password upon leaving!

Review 6:Helpful staff, location and ease of access to Gatwick Airport

Review 7:Stayed 1 night. Had to depart at 05:30. Surprised to have to pay £5 for airport taxi - too early for free shuttle as advertised he said. Didn't allow discount for not eating breakfast. Wasn't offered anything in lieu.

Review 8:Staff conspicuous by their absence. Ordered breakfast but no one in kitchen or dining room on either of first 2 mornings-turned up eventually 20mins late on first day but not at all on second. Very noisy -squeaky floors and thin walls not ideal with residents coming and going at all hours for the airport.

Review 9:Convenient location for our needs - comfortable room .

Review 10:The airport shuttle (available until 11pm) was not available at 10:40pm when I called. There was nobody at check-in just a key with wrong instructions on where the room was. No wifi code even though it claimed to have wifi. Phone and heating in the room did not work and it smelled moldy.

Review 11:Just one station, 3min from Gatwick airport by train.

Review 12:Was refused access to a hotel phone to make a short local phone call to confirm some arrangements for the next day. Pay phone in hotel did not work and phones in rooms were for internal use only. We were told to go down the street and use a public phone box. Internet access was not reliable. Toilet in our room had not been cleaned prior to our arrival. (Faeces smeared in toilet bowl.) Note re this feedback form: compulsory question about type of traveller does not allow for my description, which is middle aged person travelling with a sibling. Perhaps change to allow 'other' as a category.

Review 13:Convenient location and availability of airport transfers.

Review 14:Reception staff just about managed to be courteous, parking £4/day (is free around the corner in adjacent road) poor quality room furnishings and bed. En suite extremely cramped, shower tho' new had broken shower-head which sprayed water everywhere!!

Review 15:Fast free wifi, proximity to airport and Horley town centre.

Review 16:A little space, but this is not a problem for one-night stay.

Review 17:Good location for stopping before of after a flight from/to Gatwick. Clean rooms with all you need for a short stay.

Review 18:creaky floors didn't impress me as didn't some other guests who had to walk around there room half the night sounded like we were in a hunted house maybe the bbq should go and get some soup effects from there

Review 19:Staff were friendly and helpful

Review 20:We booked a Twin, Given a Double. Should not have to go back to Desk to get what we booked. Gave Debit Card at time of booking, Nothing taken from it so assumed only took money if we did not turn up. Unhappy when turning up to find an attempt had been made to deduct before arrival. There might have not been money in account to pay. Payment was in cash on night of arrival. Only when checking E Mails after arrival back was a message found about an attempt to deduct. If no attempt is made for payment at time of booking, DO NOT TRY to deduct unknown any time BEFORE arrival when the card might not be valid. Mine had been changed 1 month after booking.

Review 21:Being charged £4 per night to park in the grounds and being told yesthey would take responsibility for the security of the car when therewas a large notice behind the staff member saying they do not take anyresponsibility.

Review 22:Very clean, comfortable and good value for money

Review 23:Front door and entrance hall were very shabby giving a very poor initial impression. Shower taps were labeled wrongly.

Review 24:Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good

Review 25:Difficult to speak to anyone in reception as didn't know whether I should use the phone on the desk or knock on office door.

Review 26:Cleanliness of room, modern up to date bathroom, coffee and tea making,. offer of arranging lift to Gatwick airport and of collection from there which I was unable to take up. Agreed to offer breakfast at a reasonable charge as it was not included in the room contract I had arranged..Young man in reception arranged a car to airport.

Review 27:My room was near the laundry room, washing machine was going all night and making awful noise which didn't let me sleep.

Review 28:Although the room was old , it was big enough and clean.

Review 29:Early morning transfer to the airport was spot on. The centre of Horley was a short walk away to get a meal. You can cancel the room up to a couple of days before you go.

Review 30:In annexe which smelt damp in the hallway. Morning staff not very friendly just took keys off us and didn't speak.

Review 31:Location to airport. Size of room. Comfort of bed. Ensuite bathroom. Cleanliness

Review 32:Unfortunately, we couldn't take the free shuttle bus at 9.00 am as it was already booked, if i thought about it before, i would book it in advance.

Review 33:Absolutely value-for-money hotel. We told the staff about our late arrival in advance, so when we came to the hotel and had to check in there were no problems for that. We had a clean room, that was pleasant to stay in. There were two choices for a hot breakfast there, we picked one with egg and sausage. Tasty! Everything else was available for self-serve (toasts, yogurts).

Review 34:Its the hotel for the night if your flight is early next day. haven't seen breakfast, just because didn't have time. The owner offer to order the taxi. it was convenient. 5-8 mins by car from the aeroport.

Review 35:Parking facilities at £4 per night were limited in space and I had to park in a position that was potentially dangerous for my car; The small car park was laid to gravel which created quite deep puddles when it rained. Breakfast was stone cold .

Review 36:Rooms, cutlery, bed linen and dining room were all spotless. Really convenient for local amenities ie shops, pubs and cafes etc. VERY competitive price.

Review 37:The en suite shower room was very small, and the toilet was wedged awkwardly into a very narrow space.

Review 38:The hotel was very convenient, and good value. The rooms were old fashioned, and cheaply furnished, but clean and reasonably comfortable.

Review 39:it's way past it's best before date, seriously needs renovating which may be out of reach for the delightful owner.

Review 40:the small shops and cafes just a 5 minute walk away. excellent to and from shuttle service

Review 41:A little noisy because everyone was leaving at different times to catch flights during the night

Review 42:Great location quick walk from Horley station. Room was good sized. Only short drive to Gatwick for £5 - let the driver know if you have breakables in your luggage!

Review 43:They mixed up breakfast and taxi time so taxi arrived before they served me breakfast. Avoid room number 1. It is next door to staff accommodation, so it is noisy on top of normal airport noise.

Review 44:They were friendly and tried to be helpful.

Review 45:Good budget stay for airport. I think its a good thing you are not allowed takeaways in the rooms, there is a perfectly good dining area downstairs. 5 pounds to transfer to airport at 4 am is pretty good too.

Review 46:Sa situation, proche des restaurants,de l'aeroport, son staff competent et souriant, son calme. Et meme si pas d'un très grand confort, hotel plein de charme.

Review 47:Nothing to say

Review 48:The staff was excellent, from Magda the receptionist who helped me to get around. At first I thought is to far from the city, but Magdas directions were simple and easy. And Kris, he printed my boarding pass, he let me use their outlet converter which cost money and arranged taxi for me.. Coffee maker in the room, with creamer and sugar, tea... You guys are a diamond in that place.

Review 49:We were mother and grown up daughter travelling together. Greeted very pleasantly and help offered with our bags. Location very quiet, and minutes from both terminals by car. Perfect for overnight stay. No downsides. There was a petrol station just down the road on the way to terminal to refill hired car with diesel before returning it to Thrifty.

Review 50:None

Review 51:This hotel is conveniently located close to Gatwick Airport and also the small town of Horley where there are shops, restaurants etc. There is also a shuttle bus to airport (£5 when I stayed) which is good for early morning flights. The room was clean and comfortable as was the shared bathroom; there is a guest lounge

Review 52:No-one on reception when I arrived. A notice stated a 10 minute wait while guests were collected from the airport, but I waited over 30 minutes.

Review 53:The room was really clean and comfortable, had a pleasant view over the garden, cable TV, coffee, tea and kettle in the room, always a plus. The en suite loo and shower were clean and not too cramped, although the hot tap on the sink didn't work properly. I left at 6am so can't comment on the breakfast. Its close proximity to Gatwick was my reason for stopping there in order to get my early flight) and a cab to the airport cost just £5. The hotel is in need of a bit of brightening up but it's great value for money and conveniently located. I would use it again.

Review 54:No-one available to check us in upon arrival. Breakfast was poor - a small plate and not a great deal of food on it also my husband had to wait quite a while for his eggs on toast. Seemed to be one man serving everyone who came to breakfast at same time. Part of the B & B experience is for the cooked breakfast and this one did not rate highly.

Review 55:Located in a convenient area although we were not flying out anywhere.

Review 56:no free wifi in room.

Review 57:i booked this hostel because i had an early flight so i just wanted to find a fine place to take a rest. however, this hostel is much better than i expected. very clean and has lot of things you may need while traveling alone

Review 58:They gave no information about breakfast. Floor boards in room above creak and groan when they were walked on ,

Review 59:It was basic but clean and tidy, traffic could be heard , but not enough to keep you awake,

Review 60:Breakfast was below standard and not worth the cost of £5.

Review 61:Friendly staff, good location to airport and places to eat, reliable airport transfer service.

Review 62:Very Old and smelly carpets from the reception area right through the stairs and rooms, this is the first thing we noticed when we arrived.

Review 63:Only the convenience to the airport. An effort has been made to update the bathrooms.

Review 64:Nothing

Review 65:Great location, clean and fresh bedroom with new shower room. Breakfast nice. Definitely good value for money. We were in a room above the lounge where the wi-fi was located so got a strong signal. Not sure about other rooms.

Review 66:No self service breakfast available at time we left. Their could have been milk and drinks available as breakfast was paid for

Review 67:Romse well decorated. Corridors needed some TLC.

Review 68:could have used a vending machine, for a little late night snack or drink. the back terrace could be cleaned up a little and would make a great place to have a meal or just seat and relax

Review 69:great value for the money. good location, easy to get into London and the town was very nice with pubs and restaurants

Review 70:I arrived at 3 am (with their knowledge and a key left out for me) and called reception to have an alarm call wake up in the morning in which I spoke to a staff member. I also left a note on the reception desk, however I never received a wake up - luckily I had set my own alarm just in case - could have overslept my flight otherwise which says a lot for an airport hotel

Review 71:Was a fine place to stay, cute and cozy place

Review 72:Breakfast was miniscule. Hotel grounds were scruffy with random rubbish in the grounds. Free wifi was only in the lounge, had to pay otherwise. Shuttle bus was late, and the driver miserable (although he did drop me off right outside the car hire centre. Curtains in the room were falling off the rail. Furniture was cheap and nasty. Warning or "do not" signs were pasted on every available surface. The place appeared to have only one staff

Review 73:The bed was clean and comfy

Review 74:The bedroom was too noisy and the hotel was not so clean.

Review 75:The beds are comfortable. The hotel is very close to the gatwick airport and provides transfer.

Review 76:The guy on reception charged my card without telling me first! He said he needed to get some till paper from the driver so my husband said that he would pop back down to reception in 10 minutes to pay (as we were using a different card to pay) but he came up saying he had already charged the card I used for the booking. Pretty bad, especially because we told him we would come back down to pay!!

Review 77:Closeness to the airport; new looking clean bathroom; comfortable bed.

Review 78:We had to park in the nearby street to avoid having to pay to use the hotel car park. Because it is so close to Gatwick the plane noise was considerable and started at 5am.

Review 79:It was very convenient for the event we were attending nearby. The room was clean and comfortable and it was a good price.

Review 80:The bathroom of room 24 is too small. When you sit on the toilet bowl, you are not comfortable or feeling well. you can't stretch out your legs.

Review 81:The staff is welcoming and very honest. I forgot my cell-phone in the room 24 i stayed in. When i went back to Dublin, i have noticed that. I have phoned Gainsborough Lodge and asked if someone found my cell-phone. Mr. Papel has said yes, he has kept the cell-phone. I was pleased and thankful when i heard that. Finally i have ask him to send it to Dublin to my address by Post. I have paid him back by Debit Card all expenses he made. I hope to get soon my cell-phone. I am grateful to the staff in general and to Mr. Papel in particular. Thanks again. /

Review 82:Quiet hotel, great location within easy walking distance of the centre of Horley. Minibus service to the airport has always been spot on for all the times we have stayed at this hotel.

Review 83:Nice enough at first sights, but very creaky floors and other guests leaving throughout the night meant we were woken up every 45 minutes and had a terrible night sleep. When we left at 5.30, all the other guests had already left...

Review 84:Had to wait a long time to book in as there was no staff around. There was a gentleman waiting about 30 minutes to be seen

Review 85:The room was a good size including bathroom. The bed was comfortable.

Review 86:having to pay £4/night additionally on arrival for parking - wasn't clear on website although I found a reference to it on closer inspection on returning home.

Review 87:good value cheaper accommodation which was ideal for Gatwick. reasonably appointed room and comfort. Would use this accommodation again.

Review 88:5 pounds for WiFi in the room. The staff knocked at my door at 10 am for the check out( even I was on my way out but .I find it rude.

Review 89:Room clean, not far from Gatwick airport.

Review 90:Booked a twin room. One of the beds was really comfy, the other was rock hard and had loose springs. My main issue was with the bathroom. Toilet worked fine the night we arrived and I had tested the shower which was also working. However, in the morning the toilet would not flush and the shower had no cold water so it was scolding hot. Surprisingly when the room next to us stopped using their shower, our shower and toilet started working again. Unfortunately we had a flight to catch and needed to leave in 5 minutes so neither of us got to shower. The guy at the desk was neither friendly nor rude.

Review 91:The room was large. The TV had good pixel quality and range of channels. The bathroom products provided were nice.

Review 92:With this hotel you get what you pay for. Its not the Ritz but our room was big and clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and everything was just easy- no hassle. Our bathroom also looked like it had just been re-done and it was very nice! The shuttle bus service is also a great value for money service!

Review 93:Wifi only in the lounge.

Review 94:The location was great to shops, public transport and Gatwick Airport. The shuttle to the airport was very good with a reasonable fee. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 95:The backyard was closed

Review 96:Ideal to spend a night waiting for a connection flight at Gatwick if you want to feel the flavor of an old, low price, English house.

Review 97:Room was clean and comfortable although the light didn't work. We just used it as an overnight base for an early morning flight from Gatwick. Transport to the airport and then back again on arrival was excellent. I left my car there which was much cheaper than airport parking. Would use again

Review 98:The room isn't exactly luxury, and the fine for eating or drinking inside the room is higher than the price of the room itself? I think we should be allowed to eat and drink inside the room. Secondly, we weren't told there was a shuttle, so paid for a taxi to get there and nearly paid for one on the way back. We found out there was a shuttle when we asked where to get a taxi from. Also, I think somebody tried to get into our room in the morning about two hours before check-out? Also, it would have been better if check-out was noon or so.

Review 99:So close to the airport and so cheap! I thought it'd be horrible and dodgy in relation to the price, but it seemed very legitimate, felt safe, clean, good bathroom, easy to find and check-in even at midnight. We booked this place last minute because we missed our flight; we were debating whether to just sleep in the airport because of the price of hotels. But this place was exactly the thing we needed, and I'm very glad we decided to stay here.

Review 100:1. we were assigned a room in a separate premises with recycling bins in front of the entrance which was often left open 2. room was small and not very clean 3. wifi only available in the sitting room in the main premises

Review 101:1. location is convenient 2. getting to LGW by shuttle was efficiently arranged 3. low price

Review 102:My room was not in Gainsborough lodge but in a small 2 roomed building next door that looked run down. An extra payment was needed to park on the drive way which I wasn't aware of. No reception staff mean't I couldn't use wifi or ask for breakfast. It's a shame because the lodge looked ok.

Review 103:I liked it's location.

Review 104:Upon arrival we were charged a lot more than anticipated due to the misleading information on the website in regards to parking and 'airport shuttle'. We were told our flight was too early to allow us breakfast at the lodge yet the other 5 people on our shuttle had eaten there!! On our return from holiday to the lodge to collect our car, no one was in Reception, we called the number as advised on a sign on the desk. A man in a taxi pulled up and gave us our keys for our car, we asked where it was parked he said he didn't know as he worked at a different hotel (having just walked into the 'staff only' office and picked up our keys) Security at its finest. Once we hunted round the grounds for our car, we eventually found it at the back, and had to carefully manoeuvre around other cars to get out as we were very nearly blocked in. Overall poor service and very disappointed.

Review 105:The room was basic but exactly what is needed for a one night stay before a flight.

Review 106:The bed was comfortable and the on-suite bathroom was newly fitted it looked so fresh and clean, we had a lovely view and check in was quick and easy.

Review 107:no free wifi in the room, but can have free wifi in the lounge

Review 108:big and comfortable bed and warm and small room, with all facilities i need. affordable price.

Review 109:Didn't use the free WiFi as it was not made apparent, and the check in clerk wasn't terribly approachable, or available to ask. No information in the room as I would expect. Still, after 5 weeks apart, it was not top of my list of things to do!

Review 110:Proper cast Iron bath, and plumbing to die for, just the job after a five hour drive, 12 hr flight. Peaceful despite the road being quite close. Everything worked, clean bedding/towels etc etc

Review 111:Reception limited English. No,change on hand. Shower room in cupboard far too small!!!! Mattress on bed too thin! Place needs some TLC, very shabby.

Review 112:I had to phone many times to get an answer in order to be picked up from the airport The room was outside the main lodge in a dark alley. The room itself was cold; the bedside light socket was not working. There was no sign of iron facilities. When I complained to the receptionist he showed no concern whatsoever.

Review 113:The lodge was not far from the airport

Review 114:No facilities for evening food or bar on the premises.

Review 115:Ease of access to the airport, the price of the room was exceptionally fair. The room was small, but spotlessly clean. Staff were very helpful.

Review 116:No lift, hence have to carry my suitcase upstairs. Not a big deal but just something to note.

Review 117:Transport arrangement noted and arranged. Location is so near to the airport and cost is reasonable. Clean and basic place, don't expect too much, and you will be fine. Lodge also near the town area to have a good dinner and do some grocery shopping at Waitrose.

Review 118:Terrible water pressure. Difficult to adjust warm/cold water. Room was very noisy near the stairs from the sound of people walking and upper level.

Review 119:Reasonable price.

Review 120:Can't say anything bad to be honest. For the price, it's a bargain.

Review 121:Clean, intelligent staff who left information & key out for me when my flight was delayed. Don't normally bother leaving reviews but this place is no frills but good. Much better for example, than the EasyHotel nearby.

Review 122:Gainsborough Lodge was perfect for me - I was in between flights so just needed a place for the night. The room was cosy, the bed really comfortable, it had a new ensuite bathroom and was immaculately clean. The lovely owners allowed me to camp in the lounge for a few hours as I had some time to kill before my next flight.

Review 123:No elevator No free internet in room but in the public area, the internet speed is great!

Review 124:I stayed here twice within a 16 day period, and both times were fine. I think the shuttle service is good value, the beds are comfortable, there is tea in the room, the breakfast was sufficient for me. It is close to Gatwick airport so great for overnight stay. My father stayed for one night, and the upgrade our room at no cost. He was impressed at what we were provided for the cost of the room. I will definitely stay there when I have stay overnight, between flights.

Review 125:Filthy carpets and bathroom floor. No staff on premises after 11 pm and other Guests making noise all night. We sllep had by anyone.

Review 126:sheets and towels were clean. There is nothing else good to say.

Review 127:One of the most depressing places I've ever had the displeasure to stay in. It felt more like an open prison then a hotel. There were warnings of fines for guests sellotaped to the walls throughout, the room was dark, dingy and in a plasticy little annex building. I stayed thereto make the start of my trip more relaxing. That was a big mistake.

Review 128:Nothing. Not even thecheap price and the location. I ended up having to pay £10 extra for the shuttle bus, which wasn't explained when I phoned for directions.

Review 129:My only complaint is that we were staying in room 7 and could literally hear every movement from the room above us.. So as soon as they started walking about we couldn't get back to sleep!

Review 130:Just stayed for one night because of an early morning flight! The room was lovely and the staff were very helpful! Would definitely come back! Thankyou

Review 131:Nothing. I waited 15 mins in reception before anyone assisted me. My room was of a very poor standard. It was boiling hot with the radiator on full, tried to turn it off and the knob broke. The member of staff then 'pretended' to fix it and swiftly left the room. I got no sleep because it was so hot I had the window wide open and there was busy traffic all night long. And the bed was the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in with springs sticking out and a huge dip in the middle

Review 132:Only free wifi in the common area, which was a little disappointing. There was a 'no eating in room' policy which I find also a little disappointing as we normally like to have some snacks or buy back food to enjoy in our rooms, but it did not affect us much as we were in very late and just needed a few hours of shut eye before our early flight the next day. They do not have 24-hour reception, so if you are going to be late, you will need to arrange with them beforehand.

Review 133:Very near to Gatwick Airport and they even offer airport transfer to Gatwick at only GBP5 per room and can arrange for anytime of the day (even at 4am in the morning). This is really cheap considering how much it will cost by cab & the inconvenience of public transport when you have luggage.

Review 134:Lamp had no bulb shower door did not shut, phone did not work, no password given for wifi bathroom door did not shut and lock

Review 135:Clean, good location, comfortable

The Fine Print

It is possible to pay by American Express, although if guests have another card with which they could pay then this would be appreciated by the hotel's administration. Please note that the hotel does not have an elevator.Airport transportation is available between 9 am and 11 pm and costs GBP 5 per room.
