Reviews for Matahari Tulamben Resort, Dive & SPA

Review 1:The personnel at the reception was very difficult to understand. We called a few times to organise the dive and ferry upfront, they did not know much about our arrangements, at the end of the day everything went good. the facilities are very very basic, but the price is also very very cheap, it was just as we expected. The dive master barely spoke english, which is not very helpful. He also took a lot of time underwater before heading to the wreck.

Review 2:We came to dive the USS Liberty, we arrived late in the evening, did the dive in the morning and took a ferry after the dive to Gili. That being said: if you only for the dive this is a good base. There is nothing to do in Tulamben so no need to spend much money on it! The breakfast is good, different choices from eggs to pancakes. The food is good and cheap as well.

Review 3:Accomodation and diving, walking distance to main street. Slight issue with my booking which meant a free upgrade on my first night staff dealt with this very well.

Review 4:Beds were rather stiff and springs were popping, only one tiny little pillow each and when it rained our room and luggage got very wet by being on the floor. Leaked in through the sides of the windows. We stayed in Rara.

Review 5:Staff were friendly, spa was great, diving was fantastic.

Review 6:Nothing I disliked about this place.

Review 7:The staff were awesome, and the included breakfast was great every morning! The day trips and all sorts of activities you can arrange at reception was cool too. I really think I'll be back before crossing more places off my hit list...

Review 8:Their booking error meant we had to stay next door for 1 night. It has a much more professional dive operation. Mata Hari didn't clean up broken glass in the shop which cut my foot until 2nd request next day. They also emptied our gear tub, which meant re-sizing for the 2nd dive.

Review 9:Terrible wifi! While some may consider this negligible, keep in mind that other then diving, there is very little to do in Tulamben, so a better wifi would definitly make things better. At the hotel's spa, we had a couple's massage during which the masseuses spent the better part of the hour chatting and giggling in Balinese, which proved to be somewhat annoying. The massage itself was good though.

Review 10:Outstanding room; comfortable, well furnished, very clean, good AC. English-speaking staff. Affordable diving shop and good divemasters, but some of the equipment, while safe, was a bit worn. Excellent restaurant right on the beachfront.

Review 11:My room is non air-condition room. So hot because wind not coming and heat up in daytime... Better choose with air-con room even pay little bit more.

Review 12:reasonable price & convinient location. It's enogh to stay alone.

Review 13:Staff non friendly, very small unequipped sup room, and non convenient area. Couldn't be sale as 4 stars hotel. Bullets print on the hotel's car !

Review 14:Breakfast

Review 15:Be aware though that there are cracks everywhere (doors, windows) and that ants and gekkos will roam your room! Our room gekko was unfortunately not able to get rid of all the ants, so we had nightly visitors in our bed! The mozzie net couldn't stop them either... The room was clean, but not overly so. The furniture is basic, but we didn't mind as we were diving all the time and did not spent too much time in our room.

Review 16:Firstly, value for money is really good in Matahari! We stayed in one of the 'basic rooms' with air con, safe and hot showers for a couple of days and it was the best choice we could have made for diving on a budget in Tulamben. There are mosquito nets over the beds, which are a nice bonus feature after a long day of diving! The staff is very friendly and is more than willing to help you with any inquiries, especially at the travel desk! You have a lovely sea view from the pool area and the restaurant. Even though the dive center is also right next to the shore, noise wasn't an issue. Breakfast was lovely with a good choice of Western or Indonesion style food, tea, coffee, fruit and smoothies.

Review 17:only for divers, nothing else to do. no beach, Amed night life is 16km. maybe end on season because all restaurant were full of... nobody..

Review 18:big family room

Review 19:Rooms need some renovation, especially in both our rooms the mosquito nets have many holes on it, no use at all.

Review 20:Staff are nice and patient. We booked a twin room. For some reason they did not receive the request and gave us a double room. They acted quickly the next day changing us to new room. Very close to the sea, perfect diving resort. Good food reasonable pricing. Good small pool having drink in the water is very good.

Review 21:Location and restaurant. Don't think this is a luxury accomodation, but it's very good for the price, especially if you check out the other options available that are not so great for the same price. By the way, I stayed in the cheapest room.

Review 22:A lot if the staff are unfriendly, clicky and are not really interested in interacting with you unless you are spending money and tipping them. I had a conversation with two different groups whilst there that felt the same.

Review 23:My scuba diving

Review 24:Bintang beers could be colder , haha , even though they are in Stubbie holders . Some old hire dive gear & wetsuits need replacing .Well used by many divers .

Review 25:Great location right on the rocky beach . Resturant serving good meals & with good prices . Friendly happy staff .

Review 26:Everything was pretty good.

Review 27:We got the best room i think becouse they have some problems with our reservation from the booking.com - so they upgrade our room to deluxe. Very good dives teams. Few meters from the sea. Massages.

Review 28:All Matahari staff in the Office, the Restaurant, Spa, housekeeping, Ac Shop and the Dive shop were fantastic, friendly and always went the extra mile to ensure we were happy, comfortable and had a great time. This is not the first time we have stayed and dived at this hotel and we will be sure to return again. Thanks to everyone there for a great holiday!

Review 29:Not very happy with the guided tours (too expensive and not very much to see)

Review 30:Kidly and nice staff! They helped me very much! It is a good stop for diving (they got a diving center in the resort). Good restautarant and good houses (we got a familiar one).

Review 31:Room was with twin beds and we are a couple so we couldn't sleep together. It was a little bit expensive for our budget.

Review 32:Breakfast has many option for vegans. Easy for diving because all dives were from the shore. Very calm and quiet.

Review 33:the crew was unfriendly at the aririval, we received a room across construction site. The room was small, old and smelly and also the sheets had dirty steins in it. From the pictures you'll expect that the pool is big with a bridge over it, but the pool actually ends at the small bridge, just an example of how the pictures give a wrong image. The whole plant feels narrow and overcrowded. Overall its outdated, everything you'll touch is sticky and needs a lot of maintenance. We've booked for two nights, but left after 1 night, the crew didn't try to compensate us in any way, so had to pay for two nights; while they could easily give us a cheaper taxi ride or something.

Review 34:The photo's of the booking site, because it is really bad in real life.

Review 35:The bathroom in our villa was not the best, toilet not secured to the floor so very wobbly. The rest of the villa was very nice and comfortable.

Review 36:The staff were extremely helpful! We accidentally left something behind and they went out of their way to return it to us a few days later when we were on the other side of the island. Thank you so much. Everyone was very friendly.

Review 37:no kettle in the room to make a wake up coffee.

Review 38:everything about this place is excellent especially the staff. the dive guides where all awesome they could find a needle in a hay stack.

Review 39:Cappuccino was awful, some kind of powdered mix! The budget rooms had little sound privacy. We heard our next door neighbors from the walkway.

Review 40:Gorgeous view of the water. Great fruit and juices!

Review 41:The wreck and corals are not what it used to be and you can get a much nicer beach bungalow, beaches and snorkling on the gilis or Amed. Furthermore Tulamben is very boring.

Review 42:The asian food that I ordered was tasteless (thai fried rice) but the western food such as the club sandwich (that my boyfriend's ordered) was good :)

Review 43:Good and friendly staff Good coffee

Review 44:I Paid, 960,000 rps, (480,000 per night for one person, Booking.com). Found walk in Doubles 2 persons, only 220,000 for two! I paid 4 times each person! I feel ripped off. Other than displayed on website, no rooms facing sea or sea front. To contra, offered main road room, loud. Then moved to room near sea, with construction across the only walk to sea front that all must walk! Tight and little outside privacy! Not a place for true vacation!

Review 45:Restaurant sea front with great view!

Review 46:Tulamben is small so not a huge range of choice for eating out, hotel food was good however didn't want to stay there every time

Review 47:The location right in front of one of the best dive sites in Tulamben was fantastic. Dive staff very helpful and friendly. Great having a spa on site too.

Review 48:The facilities are a little tired and could use some sprucing up. The location is such that there is nothing to do if you do not dive or snorkel. The next village is 10 minutes via scooter or car so night life is non existent and food choices are limited to the resort. The spa services are not quality expected for price or location (I would not go again).

Review 49:Staff was very. kind, professional helpful and always attentive. They made the stay worthwhile. The food was generally good and prices were moderate. For scuba divers, it was a great location to dive the wreck and other areas of interest (be sure you are comfortable with beach entry dives and walking on large rocks). Drivers for transport or day tours are attentive and safe. Very safe and family friendly environment.

Review 50:Nothing that I can actually think of.

Review 51:Love the location where I didn't even have to go to other places to look for my food n dives. The fact was I just feel like home. Everything is so convenient and wtthin my reach. I felt safe and comfy staying at Matahari.

Review 52:Fantastic for scuba divers. Right by sea and close to many great diving locations, like the Liberty wreck or Seraya muck diving. Basic accommodations though, so don't expect luxury. That said, the Spa has great massages. Just need to reserve in advance as they are quite busy. Area is very isolated, so nothing to do here but dive and relax. Everything closed after 10pm.

Review 53:My room wasn't great, but it was cheap for the location. Damp smelling bathroom and could never quite get the room smelling fresh despite having a fan and window open.

Review 54:Price of cheapest room for the location - but you get what you pay for! Restaurant/ bar by the sea..... Heavenly! I dived over the road with Dive Concepts and it was a good combination of great dive school and being able to stay by the sea.

Review 55:No personal interaction with diving staff, communication skills not great. When I asked for "muck diving" no staff understood the term. Far too many people to have a one on one experience. Noise levels within the resort excessively high due to high volumes of people passing through. Cleanliness of room not great. Lots of promises made prior to our arrival but zero delivery. We cut our trip short.

Review 56:Loved the location right on the beach, food was great.

Review 57:Although spacious enough I've stayed at homestays that felt a bit more luxurious compared for the price. They apparantly have cheaper acommodation just across the road..just ask Didn't like the fact I booked two spa treatments and when it was time for my second two other customers had come in and I was asked to come back the day after....not my problem but made my problem, not very professional imo

Review 58:Had a bungalow with fridge which I liked to fill up not to be dependant on the restaurant for drinks, When you dive with the resort you just have to walk down and show up...so easy

Review 59:I had booked a four hands massage. It was certainly not what I expected.I told the staff and after some emails back and forth, the owner kindlyoffered to give me the money back, I consider that a rectified matter. There really isn't much to do around there unless you dive, in whichcase, it's fab!

Review 60:The restaurant is literally on the ocean. Beautiful views and the wreckis located directly in front. Great for diving!

Review 61:Wanted to dive with nitrox more but their analyzer needs to be calibrated and they didn't know how to do this.

Review 62:Staff were really friendly. Dive shop was great and very close to the wreck. Pool was clean and beautiful.

Review 63:Small room Wifi not working in room Small pool

Review 64:Direct access to swimm into the ocean Not far away from Liberty Schipwreck Nice beachfront restaurant

Review 65:The rooms are basic but it shouldn't matter as you're probably diving all the time :-) Given that this is a budget stay, good value for money.

Review 66:Great location right on the ocean, you can dive and swim from just next to the restaurant. Restaurant serves excellent Indonesian food, curries, etc. at a very reasonable price

Review 67:Normal food &room, Cloths r very difficult to dry even hang out in sunny day.

Review 68:If choose unlimited dive package, it's rally amazing price! Local instructor&DM r professional and cheap price.

Review 69:If you're looking for a palace, you'd be best to move on but we went with the philosophy that our room was solely for sleeping in. The bathrooms weren't great but they are a bit rubbish at most low-rent places in Bali. I wasn't particularly bothered by this but others might be. The power went off during a very large storm but that's hardly the resort's fault.

Review 70:the staff were amazing and so accommodating- even when we changed plans at the last minute. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they really went all out to make our stay special. After a day's diving, I decided to get a pedicure and a massage. Not just any pedicure, I got FLOWERS painted on my toes! I hadn't expected it nor asked for it but it was offered and I loved it! Meals were tasty and well priced, drinks were lovely, swim up bar was great and the dive guides were helpful and knowledgable. I can't wait to go back!

Review 71:The room facility need to repair in some spot due to old and rotten wood/door but in general was excellent.

Review 72:Nice place for diver and the food was excellent.

Review 73:Pool was closed for renovation which we weren't told in advance but it has to be done some time I suppose and guests could use the pool of hotel next door.

Review 74:Superior room was smaller than it appears in pictures but very comfortable and quiet, even though on main hotel path. Complimentary breakfast was excellent. Staff were all excellent. Diving was incredibly good value compared to most places in the world. Overall a great place to stay

Review 75:Stony beach Low scuba diving safety Boring food Staff not trained for emergencies

Review 76:Great an cheap massage Cheap diving Great location Friendly staff Excellent dive sites

Review 77:If you consider the price of standart and superior you cant complain, deluxe rooms are overpriced for what you get. Allmost everybody from THE personal need to learn at least Some basic english.

Review 78:THE price for superior rooms was ok, but you get what you pay for, dont expect 5star resort. THE food in the restaurant was very good And the prices for drinks and food aswell We were there with 5 persons And had every day lunch at THE matahari and the food was good and fresh

Review 79:WiFi was not strong in the room but fine in the restaurant.

Review 80:Small family run resort with an excellent location and friendly staff. The hotel is right on the water. Comfortable villa type rooms. Breakfast is included and served in the waterfront restaurant. Lunch and dinner have reasonable prices. The hotel is located between two hotels that charge triple the rate. Dive shop onsite organizes several dives a day including the Liberty site, which is a short walk away. Pleasant stay - I will definitely book here again.

Review 81:I chose this hotel as looked more traditional they have built a new part which is more modern and westernised. They moved me when requested. Neither rooms had a soft bed personally I do not like hard beds this only negative for me personal taste

Review 82:The location, the staff, the Balinese flavour, the food, the snorkelling and diving. If you like more traditional then this is the place can not recommend more highly love it love it love it

Review 83:If you are going to get some dive specialty course with class session - be prepared to get small room with no door ,open windows, sound of compressor and noise of horse-playing personnel. During the dives everything is OK.

Review 84:Location is perfect.Dive sites are amazing.

Review 85:Bed Is a little uncomfortable and only a fan in the cheap rooms but what do you expect really. Not a complaint just a word of warning :).

Review 86:Excellent quiet location with welcoming and friendly staff. Great value for money. An excellent location right on the seafront. Staff arranged a one off fishing trip for me from a staff members house in which he cooked the fish right in front of me afterwards in a traditional way, an amazing experience and worth every penny. Thank you!

Review 87:the food was not good ,kitchen smelt as we walked by ,breaky was :adequite:.staff seemed tired

Review 88:the diving is great ,nice gardens ,friendly dive staff, pool nice

Review 89:poorly equipped rooms

Review 90:wonderful dive experience. this is the place where you go only to dive or to snorkel. very quiet place. dive masters and all crew in dive center were very helpful and good organized. good restaurant, nice garden, good stuff.

Review 91:The matress as a bit too soft, but it was still OK The bathroom may need to be renovated

Review 92:Friendly Staff Great location Diving organisation Excellent value for money Multi-plugs in the room

Review 93:The important of my choose was the good place for diving, you can reach into the sea from the resort easily, and every one are friendly also when you surround in the garden was comfort, and final key point is economic, you can stay here a few day to diving.

Review 94:Rooms and resort little dated. Bathroom simple. If you look for luxury, book another resort.

Review 95:Very good price performance. Staff friendly and helpful. Diving in Tulamben is great. Perfect stay to combine. Dont miss out on the great massage corner. Local owner is a plus..

Review 96:There wasn't anything negative about being there.

Review 97:We stayed in the deluxe room and found it to be comfortable and clean. We loved having the free breakfast so close to the beach. Overall the food was tasty and they offer nice cocktails. I found that staff to be very friendly and helpful. The Dive Center is well organized and diving cost is very reasonable. They also have a very nice spa with an excellence masseur. We will come back.

Review 98:View from 2nd floor above the restaurant

Review 99:Great view, good place to snorkel, dive and relax.

Review 100:The best snorkeling, coral garden and wreck at the hotel. Tasty breakfast. Good food at friendly price in the restaurant.

Review 101:Very nice shore diving, good for beginners and expert divers. Facilities of the resort are really nice and the staff really helpful

Review 102:many many mosquitos, weak ac, massage was mediocre

Review 103:pristine diving and snorkeling, friendly staff, good location

Review 104:Very happy with our stay and the location

Review 105:We had the most amassing 2 hour massage hear. Super close to the wreck to

Review 106:Air con in bungalow was inefficient
