Reviews for The Talbot Inn

Review 1:The only negative was that the hotel is a bit tired, but I understand it is having a makeover.

Review 2:Really comfortable beds, friendly helpful staff, and a very pleasant restaurant. The room was lovely and warm and there was loads of hot water. Have stayed here before and would stay again.

Review 3:The hotel is tired and needs an overhall of the rooms and restaurant. The Pictures on the site don't match the actual rooms.

Review 4:Staff were nice and helpful

Review 5:It felt a bit tatty and slightly neglected. The restaurant, especially the wine, was wildly overpriced. The place doesn't feel cared for and has been left to slowly decline over time. It could be returned to former glory - it just needs a through redecoration and decent bathrooms. We stayed in the top floor and hit our heads repeatedly - it's actually dangerous up there if over 5ft 7!

Review 6:Staff were helpful. It is an old coaching inn so has a bit of character and history. Breakfast was pretty good given price. Breakfast room was nice - big glass doors looking out over gardens.

Review 7:Wonderful location opposite park and walks with horse riding nearby and friendly cycle cafe which had comfort blankets for patrons to use should they sit out in fresh air. All staff brilliant despite a busy time for them. Good breakfast.

Review 8:Dead flowers in breakfast room along with crumbs on the set tables & chairs. Fruit salad just had old brown apples in it. Glass shelf missing in bathroom, blind was broken. Plug chain not on plug & I couldn't get plug out of sink. Only had 1 shower gel & shampoo in 2 days. Sink base & wc base not clean. No sound proofing with noisy disco on until midnight.

Review 9:Room extremely noisy from busy high street, all night!. Toilet cistern continuously flowing and noisy. Wi-Fi signal poor and inadequate.

Review 10:Location is good

Review 11:Very dirty hotel... when we arrived in our room there were bunches of hair on the floor... the walls of the bathroom were moldy... the bed seems to be so old that there was a hole in the middle... the tv remote control was cover in dust... this was the worst value for money ever - we paid £79 and this was the Groupon price!

Review 12:staff friendly and courteous. Rob the manager handled a minor problem swiftly and efficiently with the help of the charming Charlotte always there with a smile.

Review 13:Problems with lights not working in room were only partially rectified. Tv needed retuning but this was quickly sorted.

Review 14:Bowl of food and water waiting in the room for our dog when we arrived. Lovely evening ambience in the public area of the hotel.

Review 15:The reception area was a bit scruffy and didn't give a very good impression. The reception was not very welcoming.

Review 16:Location was fine and bed was comfortable

Review 17:Main hotel dirty, cruets in particular. Bar closed at 11pm, no availability to get a drink as a resident. Room down at heel. No hot water either pm or am. We had to boil a kettle for my husband to have a shave. Dirty cup at breakfast.

Review 18:Reception did reduce our bill from £110 room only to £79 and gave us the breakfast free.

Review 19:Having had a long day at work and as at many other hotels, arriving at restaurant around 9 and expecting to able to order a hot meal. Was very disappointed to be told the Chef did not want to cook anything, was just before 9!! Not the answer I wanted to hear when other hotels in area of this price range are always happy to serve until 10 in the evening. I think the empty restaurant is more for functions than solo business customers, having been told there is a takeaway around the corner.!!!

Review 20:Shower

Review 21:Quiet location and excellent car parking close to room. Ironing board and iron in room Room at ground floor level which was perfect for walking dog early in the morning. Water bowl, biscuits and blanket supplied for dog.

Review 22:The bed was uncomfortable, the room was not very clean (dirty walls, hairs in bathroom), kettle needs descaling and the room was terribly soundproofed.

Review 23:Main hotel was nice and quaint, great staff and free parking was a definite bonus.

Review 24:The misleading location in Booking .com based on its postcode. It's in Ripley which is some distance from Woking...

Review 25:Chosen against others in the area for having a private car park. Surprised and pleased to find the historical connections with Lord Nelson - our room was labelled "Victory". We enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant - and found the menu to be more adventurous than most.

Review 26:The carpet was very dirty, especially at the side of the bed. The fire doors on the corridor were very dirty. had to walk in the rain quite a long way to the dining room for breakfast. The place has deteriorated and is shabby.

Review 27:I knew this hotel many years ago. It is a lovely old building. The breakfast was good.

Review 28:Breakfast hit & miss. No fruit juice left, no offers of extra coffee/tea, big chunks of Apple in the fresh fruit, crossaints should be warmed!

Review 29:Quiet, comfortable room.

Review 30:Unable to park at hotel on arrival as no space. Had to drive around to look for space and park further up in village and move car later that night. Perhaps allocated spaces for people staying in hotel might help. Had very small roll toilet paper which we eased out till morning no spare rolls left in room.

Review 31:Close to wisely for flower show and Woking for theatre

Review 32:Both of our rooms had dirty ensuites, no milk in our friends room, we were very disappointed as we treated our friend for her fiftieth Birthday treat.

Review 33:Only little complaints would be 1 broken tile on bathroom floor was broken which was sharp under foot and no food was available as it was a sunday evening.

Review 34:Good modern room

Review 35:I asked for a quiet room, although the receptionist was very kind to show me other options: I had the choice between the busy main road or the wedding party. The luxury rooms are all overlooking the main road, there is no double glazing and therefore it is noisy. The rooms themselves in the main building could do with being upgraded with new floors (Lino flooring in the bathroom isn't what you expect of a luxury room and the carpets throughout the main building look old and dirty). Luxury rooms should all have king size bed and should be fitted with aircon too. The breakfast looked nice but didn't taste nice: the scrambled eggs and hollandaise sauce tasted like they were out of packet, the bacon and the sausage were undercooked, the black pudding didn't make it onto the plate, the juices were vile. Not the type of hotel or clientele for us, we won't be back.

Review 36:Service was good, although they should have had more staff as they were all running around to try to attend to all of the guests.

Review 37:Lack of drinks at the bar. Only draught beers and wine. No bottled beers and very little spirit. Asked for a twin room, only to find twin beds pushed together with one large duvet covering both beds. Not good enough.

Review 38:Location good & good parking. Breakfast fine.

Review 39:The hotel is lacking in just about every department as it needs a total refurbishment and whilst the staff did what they could in the bar & restaurant they were clearly not happy! They ran out of food in the restaurant both at dinner and breakfast and they ran out of glasses in the bar, and that's if you could even find a member of staff to serve you! The beds were soggy, the walls dented and marked and not cleaned, there was only shampoo as complimentary toiletries, we had to ask for more tea bags, the cups were not washed /replaced on the second day of our stay. Our daughter and son-in-law had a similar experience as they were also staying in the hotel. Where the bed was not made up on the second day nor towels replaced even though she asked them if they would mind coming back in 10 mins as it was not convenient at the time for them to do the room! Our family and friend will certainly not be staying there again and it seems the poor reputation of The Talbot is well known in the village!

Review 40:we waited 20 mins after being seated before we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and then I had to ask 3 times for someone to take our breakfast order and there were only 3 other tables occupied so it's not like it was terribly busy because then it would have been more understandable. I have to say though once we did get it, it was very nice

Review 41:Receptionist & barman very pleasant and helpful

Review 42:The room was in desperate need of a make over. The bathroom has paint peeling off the ceiling, blood stain on bathroom door and dirty toilet bowl. All of which I reported on checking out.

Review 43:Breakfast room has been updated and is the best part if the inn.

Review 44:Not a biggie, But Both times wifi has been down :-o No train smash though! :-)

Review 45:my second stay, lovely rooms, clean and quiet, super comfy beds and lovely location. Friendly staff! will recommend to friends and return in future :-)

Review 46:Wifi wasn't working when I was there and the bar and reception area need a complete refurb

Review 47:Staff and food were great Room was OK Restaurant and beer garden were pleasant pleanty of free parking

Review 48:Had to Waite a long time to get served at the bar (not a busy period). Also had to Waite a long time for breakfast order to be taken. There was no to remote control in bedroom.

Review 49:Staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast was good when finally served

Review 50:1. No Wi-Fi available. 2. Had the impression of being a non chain Premier Inn (i.e. loads of rooms with accommodation blocks - but fronted by the pub. 3. Service at breakfast was like pulling teeth. There was only two tables (each with one person). the waitress seemed more intent to set tables than take breakfast orders.

Review 51:1. Location - very close to the M25 but still in a rural environment. 2. Food - very good. 3. Pub - very good; decent ale and friendly staff.

Review 52:The Wifi didn't work, room was adequate but lighting generally poor, bedside lamp bulb needed replacement, and was promptly attended to, decor a little jaded, full length mirror would have been appreciated.

Review 53:Staff friendly and attentive, lovely old coaching inn atmosphere in main building, location pretty, nice garden/patio area.

Review 54:wifi didn't work, couldn't get cold water out of the cold water tap for ages, bedroom soft, very warm generally - not even the window open really helped.

Review 55:Very friendly and helpful staff. A lovely old pub bar too and an outside seating area that was lovely in the evening sun.

Review 56:It would have been nice to know *before* we arrived that on the day of our intended departure the whole village was going to be sealed off for a cycle race. The room could have done with a proper clean (wedding detritus on the floor and finger-marks all over the mirror). Very over-priced wine-list. Food, though excellently cooked, was also expensive and portions modest. This is a general complaint - will someone please tell all chefs that no matter how prettily you dress them up, three scallops do not make a serving, even for a starter - and especially not at a tenner a pop.

Review 57:Comfortable, spacious room; very friendly, helpful staff (though eagerness outweighed competence from time to time); excellent (but very pricey) food.

Review 58:Nice welcome from friendly staff. Lovely, clean comfortable bedroom with large en suite shower room in the newer part of the building. Main building very Olde Worlde & quaint.Ideal base for visiting RHS Wisley & Hampton Court.Thoroughly recommended.

Review 59:Breakfast was very poor particularly if you are not a full English type. Meats were hard and had been left out, no granola, no porridge very little fresh fruit. Had paid extra for the breakfast but did not eat it.

Review 60:No extra bed in the room even though booked weeks in advance. No shower cap, minimal toiletries and no air con, the room was so unbearably hot that I couldn't sleep at all.

Review 61:Nice linen

Review 62:No bad experience as such. The old part of the hotel is a bit tired, and the garden was a bit neglected, but not enough to stop us returning.

Review 63:Friendly helpful staff. Good restaurant. Comfortable bed. The hotel is very old and has lots of character, and nice garden and patio to sit in for drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.

Review 64:Some of the aspects of the room and bathroom were a little tired and in need of repair. The internet connection and mobile phone signal was incredibly poor.

Review 65:As we were travelling with our Golden Retriever, we loved the fact that we were in the Stable Block - giving us easy access to a wooded area which we found incredibly useful.

Review 66:I stayed in the annexe which was floor level, quiet and with the space to truely relax. They should really promote their bathroom space which was a very generous wet room and disabled friendly. The entire building was wheelchair friendly, wide door space, ramps and spacious rooms, clean and full of charachter. Historic links to Lord Nelson.

Review 67:The mattress was like sleeping on a trampoline. Cheap and uncomfortable. If Premier Inns can provide a comfortable bed why can't hotels realise that top of the list is a good nights sleep

Review 68:being put in room above emmas room to much noise don,t belive the hotel was that busywe could have been put in anather room also the cost of a breakfest what a ripoff

Review 69:the girls on reception were really nice staff allround very good

Review 70:Rooms and hotel getting into tired condition only made up for by good housekeeping/cleanliness.

Review 71:Friendly staff, and good food in the restaurant, and value for money of the Wisley Package deal.

Review 72:Wi-if was a bit hit and miss depending where you were in the building.l

Review 73:Staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are a decent size, beds very comfortable, very clean and overall good facilities.

Review 74:Bit of noise from the road dependant on room location.

Review 75:Helpful staff, in particular Rob who was really proactive. Good breakfast, choice of rooms from modern to old and creaky. Take your pick. Good bar nice rear garden.

Review 76:At breakfast had to ask for coffee refill. It felt a bit like an inconvenience to the waitress. It would have been nice to have a cafetière on the table. However breakfast was lovely. Individual

Review 77:Arrived late after returning from RHS Chelsea, but this was no problem. Reception staff were very accommodating and friendly. Allowing us to dine before checking in.

Review 78:Room could have been better a bit of a makeover wouldn't go a miss. Paintwork needed re-doing and Floor tiles were lose in the Bathroom.

Review 79:Excellent Staff very helpful and good food

Review 80:The poor breakfast service and menu. If Marco Pierre White is going to attach his name to this hotel he ought to visit it occasionally and review the breakfast menu and the continental buffet.

Review 81:The location and the reception staff

Review 82:Stated in room 9 and the room hadn't been properly cleaned. A wet towel was hung on the door, empty shampoo bottles in the shower and half drunk drinks in the bedroom. Utterly disappointed. I left the manager a business card to discuss the matter and no phone call and not even an email was received. Despite good bar food, i was thoroughly disappointed with the visit.

Review 83:Staff and evening meal were excellent.

Review 84:The hotel room was very dirty! Stains on the carpet, dirty spatter on the walls of the bathroom and bedroom and the Paint was peeling off the ceiling of the shower room. Rooms need painting and carpets need cleaning.

Review 85:Located close to a party we were attending

Review 86:I didnt see that on sundays the resturant is closed .as this was one of the reasons i picked that hotel the room was road side and a little noisey and the room was very hot .a little noise from the bar but on a sunday the bar closes at 10 so did not bother me to much

Review 87:The room was a good size and breakfast was good nice garden

Review 88:It seemed strangely hot in the room, although no heating was on..

Review 89:Very helpful and friendly reception staff. Was celebrating my boyfriends birthday and they were so helpful-putting a balloon, cake, presents and decorations in the room for me ready for our arrival. Room (in the original building) was lovely. Full of character and bed extremely comfortable.

Review 90:Had room above kitchen and was loud noise below/next door which made the floor vibrate !! Even when kitchen fans turned off it persisted. Only stopped past 11PM.

Review 91:Dinner & breakfast both top quality

Review 92:all good!

Review 93:great chef; the best scrambled eggs in the world. Pleasant staff. Ample free parking. Clean and fresh room. Quiet location. Biscuits with tea coffee.

Review 94:Cleanliness is below average. Stains on the carpet, holes in the wall, the rim of the toilet was filthy (No wonder if there isn't a toilet brush) Tables in the dining room were sticky

Review 95:We stayed in the actual hotel as oppose to the rooms near the car park separate from hotel. The lampshades were full of cobwebs and the wallpaper was hanging off all around the window in the bedroom which was also very stained from an obvious leak, also there was wallpaper hanging off in the bathroom over the bath and all the lights went out at around 11.30 on the night and we only had a small bedside light. The toilet when flushed keep running like a ballcock was stuck so couldn't sleep due to constant noise of running water. Due to age of property the bed was on a slope and therefore not comfortable

Review 96:The outside, the breakfast was good and varied, although I did have to ask to have my coffee refilled.

Review 97:Lack of cleanliness, no soap, cobwebs. Hoodwinked because the room was meant to be on offer; reduced from £129 to £79 but it was still very poor value.

Review 98:Location.

Review 99:This place is absolutely fantastic! Everybody is nice, everything is easy, no complication whatsoever. You are welcome with a smile abd you leave with a smile. On top of this the food is top quality. Breakfast or dinner (didn't had the chance to try it) is supreme!!!!! Many thanks to everyone I hope to be back soon!

Review 100:No apology from member of staff when kept waiting at reception for seven minutes with no bell to summon assistance plus the quality of the evening meal was at least disappointing. Decoration in room very tired and paint peeling off ceiling above shower.

Review 101:Location near RHS Wisely and a good stop half way to the south coast.

Review 102:I stayed in an inferior room to the one I had reserved due to the hotel's error in acknowledging the reservation. The receptionist was not very helpful on my arrival.

Review 103:Room was very dusty, curtains had dust falling off when closing- cob webs in the corners of the ceiling. Bed sunk in the middle very uncomfortable, had to sleep at bottom of the bed where it was firmer. Wardrobe, side tables and phone very dusty. Not worth the money. Quite disappointing. Also window was open- very cold room when walking in, had to close window and heat room up for a good few minutes.

Review 104:Staff were nice and the outside of the hotel was beautiful

Review 105:Bruised heads, from contact with beams and ceilings. Bath on a plinth -impossible to stand up. Forget about washing if unable to sit in thebath!! At 2.00pm we were told that the heating would not come on until4.00pm. Exorbitant price for this dowdy, almost scruffy, establishmenttrading on its historical slant. High traffic noise. Restaurant cold atbreakfast.

Review 106:bathroom even though a good size was very cold and could do with some heating in it. Room was apart from main building and outside door even though had a keypad entry, the didn't close properly so not secure. Did not rain so did not get wet on way to dinner and breakast!

Review 107:Good size room, very comfortable beds good food on evening menu and excellent breakfast. Staff were more than helpful.

Review 108:Very Tired Hotel that has seen better days. Needs some re furb. Food was a reconstituted plate of chicken nuggets flattened out in a batter and the beer was as flat as a witches..

Review 109:Friendly Staff and Warm rooms with comfortable Bed

Review 110:Sink didn't drain or get fixed. Bar carpet filthy. Dog bowl not clean. Price didn't include breakfast as we thought.

Review 111:Good breakfast and bed comfy.

Review 112:Nothing

Review 113:I really liked the village atmosphere and the pubs and restaurants too. Good for walking and for a quiet break from London. Would definitely go back loved it.

Review 114:Bar was slightly tatty/ old- although I know it is an old coaching pub- I think it could do with a spruce up. Wine very expensive up to £9.00 for a 250ml glass??

Review 115:Good restaurant Lovely sized room

Review 116:The staff were pleasant and helpful. When we first arrived we were given a twin room by mistake but this was rectified immediately. Our double room was comfortable and clean. Would like to have had a bath and not just a shower but the shower was powerful and hot. There was no iron in the room but one was brought to us as soon as we asked for it. All in all a good experience, great value for money and I would stay there again

Review 117:Miserable and sour faced reception at breakfast, waiting to be served at breakfast where everything asked for seemed to be a chore, making your own toast with minimal bread, never asked for another coffee or tea. We would have been more sympathetic on the clear resource issues at breakfast if a more pleasant welcome or apologetic attitude was adopted. The bed was too soft and rooms in the ripley building are very basic with un bleached toilet and lime scale on the taps. Will never stay here again!

Review 118:The reception staff, very welcoming.

Review 119:Great potential, lovely staff just a bit run down

Review 120:The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly! The hotel looks lovely from and is in a good location but internally is in need of updating, as unfortunately it's fairly tired. This could be a brilliant hotel if it was renovated to give it the face lift it needs! The food is fine, but a tad too white table cloth for a country hotel- some well done pub classics would be great and the conservatory area is in serious need of redecoration!

Review 121:Everything was fine. In terms of cost, this hotel punches above its weight. You wont get better for less anywhere IMO

Review 122:QieteLovely staff, genuinely welcoming and attentive. Quiet room with a nice TV a clean modern bathroom and a very comfortable bed. Ample inclusive car parking and food prepared by a proper chef. The Inn itself is a historical monument. Excellent location for Woking, Guildford and A3 /M25. Excellent value for money.

Review 123:Did not supply enough tea bags and milk in the room. I should have asked and more would probably have been supplied.

Review 124:Location was ideal for what we wanted; not in the hustle and bustle of a large town or city. Breakfast and evening meal we had were excellent and can't be faulted in any way. All staff we had dealings with were very polite, helpful and friendly. Comfortable bed.

Review 125:Small Towels & Cheap Toilet Paper. Wifi did not work once you had handed over email address and mobile contact details. Fortunately reception is good so you can use your mobile internet.

Review 126:Bed was very comfortable, the room was a decent size and the shower had good pressure. The bar is very good and the food was perfectly cooked and of excellent quality. The girl on reception was particularly pleasant and friendly to all guests

Review 127:Noisy guests next room, in the earlier part of the night, but they were fine from 10pm onwards; so no issue with sleeping.

Review 128:Friendliness of staff, and comfortable room and facilities. Good to have an ironing board and iron in the room. Wake up call was personal and pleasant.

Review 129:I booked a taxi through the hotel, the driver asked for directions to the location? Then got lost, then tried to charge me £18 for a five minute journey! Although this was not the hotels fault they should be careful what taxi companies they use/recommend

Review 130:Overall a decent hotel

Review 131:Booked 4 rooms for family with ages ranging from 17 to 76. All rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff were really helpful, pleasant and fun! The restaurant was pricey but gorgeous food - no complaints from anyone. The history of the Talbot Inn is really interesting.

Review 132:Our room clearly had not been hoovered for some time....hair, bits of tissue and food on the floor is not good enough for £100/night. We complained and were given another room which was just as bad. Whoever supervises the cleaning is not doing their job. At least a 25% discount was offered. Eggs benedict for breakfast was cold.

Review 133:good location friendly staff

The Fine Print

Guests wanting to dine in the restaurant are advised to book a table in advance in order to guarantee a place.
