Reviews for Rampsbeck Country House Hotel

Review 1:I informed the hotel it was celebratory weekend for my myself and my husband. I was finishing work after 37 years. While there was a polite reference made about it no celebratory drink was offered.. I wasn't really made to feel special or even a well done from the hotel, opportunity missed for me. We had chosen this hotel particularly because it has been such a landmark in our family history, so yes I was disappointed.

Review 2:Loved the house and of course the surroundings. The staff were very pleasant and polite.

Review 3:not too keen on the menu....very small amounts and the lamb and the beef were both tasteless....two pieces of meat just slightly larger than a postage stamp and two potatoes the size of marbles, two green beans seared on a griddle, does not make a main course.BUT, most people seemed happy enough, so I guess it is down to personal taste.Service and presentation were faultless.

Review 4:To begin with we re put in room 22. This was pokey, no view and tiny bathroom.

Review 5:We upgraded.to a room overlooking the lake and it was beautiful . The food was OUTSTANDING

Review 6:Not a bad experience as such ... my husband loved the food - all the food - but the Taster Menu was not "his thing". He prefers more traditional dining.

Review 7:Outstanding in all aspects - staff, food, accommodation. The attention to detail was incredible and nothing, absolutely nothing, was ever too much trouble. I was bowled over by how the staff handled my necessity for a gluten-free diet. I never had to remind anyone - all remembered / knew each and every meal time, even those who came on duty towards the end of our (too short!) stay. A truly wonderful short break.

Review 8:Mould around the bathroom, over priced accomodation, drinks and food. Booked for twin beds and was given double and no recompense.

Review 9:Nice building and garden, excellent breakfast, friendly staff

Review 10:Restaurant portions were miniscule and expensive! My starter which was Scallops, had ONE scallop and a few "bits".....very overpriced despite the grand presentation. Main courses were equally small...

Review 11:Lovely room with stunning view.

Review 12:What did I like? Everything! A totally brilliant find on the Booking.com website, the staff were fantastic, the room and facilities top notch, food excellent - couldn't have asked for more or better.

Review 13:You can't get a bar snack between 6:30 and 8:30 PM. Ludicrous and infuriating. You won't find that policy mentioned on the website. It's doubtless because they want you to eat a 3 course dinner in the restaurant. But what if you don't want to? Fortunately the pub is close and very accommodating.

Review 14:Lovely location and gardens. Nice lounges.

Review 15:Although they presented no particular problem, surprised to see the number of large dogs staying with other residents!

Review 16:Pleasant staff, location and gardens, super twin room with excellent bathroom and free fresh fruit and bottled water.Choice of bar meals or Fine Dining in restaurant.

Review 17:Everything, the whole package, was 'top drawer'. We last stayed there in 2002 - no change, you have to be good to maintain that very high standard.

Review 18:The room was too warm and the bed and pillows too soft for our our comfort. Quality was excellent and although huge, the bed was actually 2 singles joined together, a double would have been preferred.

Review 19:Location was quiet, beautiful surroundings, impeccable staff and cleanliness.

Review 20:We arrived late to find we had been upgraded. We had had a disaster before arrival with car breaking down, hiring a new car and the surprise of an enormous repair and hire bill but we had decided to soldier on as we had cottages booked and were desperate for our holiday in the Highlands ...and what absolute bliss we found at Ramspbeck. Gracious, kind and welcoming, the staff and amazing suite really made us smile and breathe a huge sigh of relief...our holiday had begun and it was in fantastic style. There is no way that they could have known that the upgrade into that fantastic suite signalled for us that out luck had changed and we were away....but biy did it lift our weary spirits...simple acts of kindness can have enormous meaning when they come at the right time!! Aside from the upgrade this is a beautiful place, spotless and welcoming in an amazing location - breakfast served in the room was first class. Highly recommend. We will be back.

Review 21:The shower in our room was Lukewarm, we ordered a picnic lunch for a day out that could only be described as mediocre and it had a bit of a stuffy atmosphere, although Gemma at the front desk was lovely.

Review 22:Gemma at the front desk, the spectacular gardens and the breakfasts.

Review 23:Nothing at all

Review 24:Wonderful location overlooking Ullswater, across to Loadpot Hill and Hallin Fell. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Lots of green space for our dog to run around in. Excellent breakfast.

Review 25:This was our honeymoon, and having arrived in wedding gear thought there might an upgrade to the room, or at least a complimentary bottle of something , the lady on the desk was lovely and wished us congratulations, but that was it, showed us to our room which was a standard room , however on the internet pictures it doesn't show you looking at a large ventilation pipe and rooftop or out of the bathroom window the lake was nearly visible if you stood on tiptoes, also the room was to stuffy and warm, could have done with a fan !!!!, whilst the food was decent enough there wasn't enough atmosphere, forever whispering, also on the Sunday , we was sat having a bar meal , and 4 pompous people were complaining after having seen our bar meals brought to us , to the waiter , I see you have brought those there their meal , we are not eating in here , we want to go where the fine dining room was, a little bit off putting (those) , had to bite my tongue

Review 26:The staff were the most attentive me And my wife have come across, the breakfasts were decent enough, bar meals were very nice too, very clean and tidy ,

Review 27:everything about this hotel was amazing. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. they were professional at all times and friendly and we would recommend this hotel

Review 28:Nothing!

Review 29:We very much appreciated the fact that the staff went to considerable lengths to make our very last-minute stay delightful, even up-grading our room on the first night in order to allow us more space and comfort after our long trip from the north of Scotland! The food was superb, both in the bar and the fine-dining restaurant and the views from the hotel are awe-inspiring.

Review 30:No complaints, although lower prices are always welcome...

Review 31:Easy to find, park, check in; assistance with luggage, friendly, efficient staff; excellent food, good wine list and perfect setting in Lakeland tranquillity but only 15 minutes from M6.

Review 32:At a little over £300 for dinner bed and breakfast ( plus a couple of drinks in the bar) it was expensive especially as " full" English breakfast included a HALF slice of black pudding

Review 33:Proximity to M6. Provides comfortable accommodation in lovely setting on Ullswater

Review 34:My husband was not permitted to eat a bar meal in the dining room despite the fact that the other three people in the party were eating from the fine dining menu. Given the amount of money we were spending we felt this was very pedantic and all four of us had to eat at a wobbly table in the bar. Apparently the chef 'would not have liked it'

Review 35:Comfortable and clean rooms and excellent food

Review 36:The Wi Fi was poor during our stay but we were told that this was due to maintenance work on the system.

Review 37:We benefitted from a free upgrade from the standard double room.

Review 38:This was our second anversity and we had our wedding there 2 years ago and just about booked the whole hotel out and I would of expended to be given a bottle of wine or a up grade very upset

Review 39:After a long journey it was lovely to relax and unwind in a clean comfortable room with all requirements catered for. The bar meal was excellent and reasonably priced.

Review 40:Nothing bad to report. The only thing I would change if practical, would be to relocate the car park from the front of the hotel to the side. There was no noise from cars or other guests, but the view from the dining room is somewhat spoilt.

Review 41:We had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Rampsbeck. Staff are excellent, very attentive and professional; it's a delight to find this level of service nowadays. Food always of high quality, breakfast and dinner well balanced and a good wine list. Lovely room with large bathroom, four poster bed, seating area and view on the lake.

Review 42:Food was not value for money , 3 course was £50 but not much on plate

Review 43:rooms were clean and decore Inkeeping with the building.. full of antique trinkets , power shower brilliant and staff friendly and helpful

Review 44:The internet access was not very good, very slow and sometimes unable to log on. If you need internet access it may not be efficient enough. A lot of the rooms had lovely views but ours overlooked a car parking court yard at the back which was a bit disappointing.

Review 45:Everything. The rooms, food and staff were all excellent.

Review 46:Great hotel in a lovely location. Superb afternoon tea and dinner. Very professional and knowledgeable staff. Clean, well equipped and comfortable facilities. Peace and quiet - no sounds of the modern world - just the sounds of nature outside.

Review 47:The Windermere room was beautiful. We didn't want to go anywhere else! Great facilities and comfortable bed. The staff were very helpful. We would definitely return.

Review 48:Nothing really - the wi fi was very slow but not really a problem. The bed cover was rather drab brown colour and some of the furnishings also very dark and a bit drab but I am being picky.

Review 49:The food was fantastic and the staff really well trained and attentive. Wonderful traditional country house with magnificent views.

Review 50:Our room was small with a small double bed but bathroom and decoration was beautiful but stuck at the back of hotel without views. Reflected in the lower rate of course. So cannot complain for a weekend break.

Review 51:Location

Review 52:Having to leave!

Review 53:This is our second visit to one of the best hotels in the Lake district: they had a record of the room we'd liked last time and gave it to us; beautiful outlook; spotless; the formal dinner was outstanding- wonderful flavours and presentation; homemade petit fours to die for; gracious and friendly staff. It was bliss!

Review 54:Too short a break and Lake district drizzle.

Review 55:The fires, the food, the company. A great location for small groups (7 of us). The staff were wonderful, welcoming and courteous. Our evening meal was served in the private dining room at the hotels suggestion, a master stroke not only for us but also for the other guests (we're not known for our whispering conversations).

Review 56:We have been visiting the Rampsbeck for many years and it never fails to impress. It just gets better. We feel relaxed and enjoy the luxurious surroundings. The restaurant is wonderful. We will always return and would like to thank all the staff for making our stay so very enjoyable.

Review 57:A small pool and hot tub facility would be in keeping with the room rates at this hotel.

Review 58:The restaurant is highly recommended. Each course is a delight, presented beautifully and served with care and precision. Our room was nice, if let down slightly by poor lighting and the absence of door handles on the anachronistic flatpack wardrobe. All staff were polite and helpful.

Review 59:All great but wi-fi in room a little patchy. May have been us. In fact very happy without it as such a stunning view.

Review 60:Room, staff, food, welcome and comfort. Location stunning - best choice ever.

Review 61:Bar snacks very small portions,(had to order extra chips) and pricey. Wi Fi connection extremely poor.

Review 62:Friendly staff, great room , log fires, beautiful location.

Review 63:the staff were very professional and courteous, the hotel is in a beautiful location on the side of Ullswater, pooley bridge is just a short drive away it was a perfect place for a quiet short break.

Review 64:I booked a double room and when i got there(I'm with other two friends) for check-in, we were told that the room was for one person only and we needed to pay extra charges for the other two people so we ended up having to pay something around 400 pounds for a night which was definitely outrageous. Wifi is awful there, no signal for the room on the ground floor. Staff weren't quite up to the standard i was expecting considering the amount of money i paid. This lady at the reception tried to hard to smile (pretentious of course) made us feel very unsettling. We only had afternoon tea which was quite disappointing . Dinner option was over prices (50 for a three course meal PP). It is located in a place where only people who drive would have access to so that's something worth mentioning.

Review 65:Room was quite big with good view

Review 66:Had to ask for more water in room as the tap water wasn't suitable for drinking. It was however delivered free of charge via room service

Review 67:Amazing views, staff and food.

Review 68:nothing

Review 69:The country house was perfect . Very relaxing with lounges and drawing room both with log fires. The staff very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and clean. The breakfasts offered good choices and were well cooked. The location made it easy to get to the lakes and countryside

Review 70:Heating in our bedroom not working when arrived. Unable to unpack until rectified so waisted time. Have small dog - offered dog friendly room but £40 extra for the 1 night!Sadly we wouldn't stay again as our dog had to stay in car.

Review 71:Food and service was excellent. Beautiful setting. Felt like stepping into the Edwardian era. Restaurant staff outstanding.

Review 72:Some of the staff tried too hard to be posh and came across as stuck up. A lot of foreign staff. Rooms very hot.

Review 73:Beautiful hotel and location. very keen on bringing new bits and fresh glasses into your room.

Review 74:Breakfast was below average for a hotel of this quality with limited selection and very slow service

Review 75:Beautiful location, comfortable rooms, excellent dinner

Review 76:I am trying to think ...... maybe the coffee could have been a bit stronger at breakfast? Difficult to think of anything else as the whole experience was so good.

Review 77:Magnificent location overlooking Ullswater, spacious rooms and elegant furnishings, relaxed ambience and the nicest staff who could not do enough for you.

Review 78:The bandwidth on the w-fi was extremely low, even downloading e-mails was difficult, forget browsing or streaming. Dinner was delicious but small portions. Whilst I recognised the effort that went into their preparation, for me, they did not represent good vale for money.

Review 79:The location overlooking Ullswater is excellent. The staff were all friendly and very attentive. Good sized room and en-suite, very comfortable.

Review 80:Thought cost of fine dining over the top. To suggest coffee as ' an individual course' was poor. Comparable near by luxury hotel would be good £15 cheaper. But we still enjoyed our stay.

Review 81:General ambience

Review 82:This was a return visit to Rampsbeck having discovered it last Easter. It is a wee treasure, hidden close to the motorway. Gorgeous bedrooms, tastefully decorated and so relaxing! The views over the lake are superb. The staff are friendly and helpful too. What's not to like.

Review 83:The attention of staff was excellent but really no need to explain what was on our plates at every course as we had already read it on the menu .A slight difficulty reading in bed in our room as the bulb wattage was too low with the coloured shade

Review 84:Excellent attention to all details from all the staff who were friendly, helpful and and all made you feel welcome Extras such as bathrobes, water and fruit available in all rooms not only upgrades as happens in many Hotels. Would happily stay here again.

Review 85:Nothing at all.

Review 86:I booked this place as it was10 mins off the motorway. Arriving was like stepping back in time with all mod cons! The staff were wonderful and the food fantastic. The owners have spent time and money doing the place up and it showed. (It felt like luxury to have a very responsive heating system in such an old house). Tremendously comfortable and I will most definitely be back.

Review 87:The bedroom could be very warm overnight even with windows open. Said to be due to high heat retention from afternoon sun. probably welcome in colder spells.

Review 88:location, food quality.

Review 89:the menu for the evening meal in the dining room. The food offered was strange - nouvelle cuisine? We had to resort to a bar meal on our third night.

Review 90:staff without exception were very helpful, attentive and extremely well mannered

Review 91:Sash window in bedroom loose and external wooden window cill rotting. Room very hot at night but worried about opening the window.

Review 92:Location, and free access down to the lake and gardens - wonderful. High quality of food and furnishings. Luxurious bed, bedding and en-suite bathroom.Loved the additional special touches e.g. toiletries, fresh fruit daily in room. Felt pampered by staff who were very attentive.

Review 93:wifi was abit slow.

Review 94:staff were great food excellent both nights setting is lovely with views out over the lake. dog friendly - so he had a great time chasing rabbits.

Review 95:Worst wi-fi - may as well not have it!

Review 96:Friendly welcome, helped to our room and given a run down on all the facilities. The location is beautiful. Stunning gardens - I wish I'd had more time to enjoy them but we were too busy chasing the wi-fi signal.

Review 97:The lack of variation in the music played throughout the restaurant and public areas contributed to an almost 'reverential hushing of voices' at dinner and even in the bar. The musical pallet could be broadened whilst still preserving the atmosphere of a 'high quality' country house hotel.

Review 98:The friendliness of staff, setting, excellent food, comfort and cleanliness. We would certainly recommend it subject to slight reservations described below.

Review 99:Rooms could get very hot in summer. No air conditioning. Shower erratic. No thermostatic valve so the water changed from hot to cold every few seconds.

Review 100:The location and ambience of the hotel were perfect. Staff, very friendly, helpful and attentive. Food was excellent and dining out in the gardens wonderful.

Review 101:The evening meal we had was quite fussy, too many flavours on the plate and overly nouvelle cuisine. (we preferred the bar meal we had on the first evening, which was much better value too).

Review 102:Fantastic location next to Ullswater. Most rooms have great view, although ours didn't. Traditional English country house hotel, with cooked to order breakfast and good bar meals if you don't want to eat in the more formal restaurant at night.

Review 103:Really impressed with our stay at this gem of a hotel in a beautiful part of England. Staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly, views from our 1st floor room were sublime, gardens were lush and the dinner was both exceptional AND large. Happy I chose this place to propose to my now fiancée :-)

Review 104:Nothing.

Review 105:Situation, gardens, ambience, friendly staff, peace and tranquility. Lovely breakfast in tasteful surroundings. No piped music in public areas.

Review 106:the hotel is one of the best we have ever stayed in. The gardens and views of the lake were wonderful. The staff very attentive without being intrusive.

Review 107:Just take care at the entrance/exit which can prove difficult.

Review 108:We had perfect weather and a perfect stay with such efficient lovely staff. The hotel style and furnishings were totally to our taste and the bedroom and beds very comfortable and the food delicious either in the dining room or the bar. Lovely position and one can take a short walk down to the lake through the pretty very well kept gardens. Good parking. We were allowed to take our little dog. Hope to book a room with a balcony next time!

Review 109:Laurel bush in front of our windows had grown to obscure the view. Room (Hallin) was unusually hot. I had a hair in my cooked breakfast on 1st morning which rather put me off the restaurant.

Review 110:Very comfortable room. Lovely position

Review 111:The prices of spirits are very high, but that seems to be the norm nowadays.

Review 112:Everything about this hotel is first class. The beds were extremely comfortable, the facilities superb, the staff friendly and helpful, the gardens lovely, and the food - why it has no Michelin star I have no idea! Absolutely fabulous!

Review 113:This Hotel is a must, it is one of the best hotel experiences we have had. If you like to travel with your dog, the hotel is most accommodating. The food is to die for, deserves 3 Rosettes in my opinion. The Staff are excellent, make you feel special.Overall Rampsbeck you have got it right, very well done! We will be back to visit again and again! Thank you.

Review 114:I had a wonderful week at the Rampsbeck - the hotel and surroundings are stunning and the staff friendly and extremely helpful. As a writer I found it inspiring and I was reluctant to come home! I have no hesitation in recommending it and am looking forward to my next visit.

Review 115:Nothing the hotel is excellent
