Reviews for Macdonald Leeming House
Review 1:Hotel would benefit from a hot tub out on that front lawn with views of the lake.
Review 2:Staff are superb both front of house and in the dining room. The food was excellent quality beautifully presented and portion sizes spot on. Suites are well worth the upgrade very comfortable clean and quiet. The hotel rooms are also nice and warm. Hotel itself sits in beautiful grounds big enough for a gentle walk. Location is also perfect feels remote but keswick Penrith and ambleside are only a short drive away.
Review 3:Food was average, small menu, vegetarian options weren't great. Room was just above average, but unfortunately bathroom was poor.
Review 4:Lovely area, views were breathtaking.
Review 5:Loved the beautiful setting and great views, peaceful location, had a fantastic dinner in the restaurant, very good choice for breakfast and staff were friendly. Hotel felt like a home. We would definitely go there again.
Review 6:It was not a bad experience but hotel felt very corporate and rather impersonal. Reception pleasant but a bit starchy, staff not at all visual when we needed something at cream tea time, breakfast service slow and cooked quality very, very poor and cool - poached eggs shocking.
Review 7:Location, value for money room at price we paid, suited our requirement on this occasion.
Review 8:Diner menu very odd choices of food - with lots of things pickled? both went for the Steak as was the only normal food on the menu. With better menu you may get local custom not just hotel guests.
Review 9:Location and friendliness of staff
Review 10:the scones were very odd, maybe not that fresh.
Review 11:lovely hotel in peaceful location, large room well decorated and comfortable beds. clean throughout. well kept garden with pretty autumn colours. great place to relax and good for going walking.
Review 12:In reception there was a huge dislay of lillies, My husband had a reation to them and we had to leave and find a doctor asap. We were only there 10 Minuites i was absolutley beside my self. I told the lady on reception the reasen we had to leave.
Review 13:I am sure we would have liked our stay but it was very upsetting as we had to leave. It was our wedding anniverary .
Review 14:- We were told our room was ready but when we got in it wasn't so we had to wait an hour - Wifi was awful - nobody answered room service number so had to hunt for someone to order food (first world problems) - Toilet flush very temperamental
Review 15:- The location is PERFECT - Beautiful views over the lake - Complimentary Scones & cream was delicious. - Food was stunning. - Great brekkie - Amazing bed, huge and so comfy
Review 16:No gluten free option for the complimentary afternoon tea. To be fair they did not know about this until we arrived ,but when we asked if they had anything, it was a gluten free brownie(of course), but at a cost of £5.25.
Review 17:The location and comfort as well as cleanliness.
Review 18:We didn't have the dog bed/bowls provided as promised, but we had taken our own. Lack of bins outside!! Couldn't find any at all, other guests said the same too. There was v limited access to the lake.
Review 19:The executive dog friendly room was amazing, huge bed, seating area and French doors out onto a patio with wrought iron furniture. Bathroom was lovely, luxury products and bathrobes provided too. View from room was great and the gardens were beautiful. Would definitely go again.
Review 20:Shower had very weak pressure. Service in the dining room was a little chaotic. Long wait for orders and errors. Staff very willing to correct though.
Review 21:Fabulous views and great location for Ullswater attractions. The hotel is elegantly decorated and well kept. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Review 22:Some noise from an extractor fan outside the room but this did stop when the kitchen closed.
Review 23:Lakeside location with good views of surrounding fells. Complimentary cream tea on arrival. Comfortable country house feel with spacious rooms.
Review 24:Couldn't connect to wifi, shower was rubbish, food wasn't value for money, couldn't sleep due to noisey water tank.
Review 25:Location, building, rooms, staff.
Review 26:Floorboards badly creaking in the corridors which wakes you up in the night when other guests are passing through and the same in my room upstairs. It is very noisy.
Review 27:Situated in a wonderful place
Review 28:The dinner could have been better - the chap on the next table sent his back. It's a shame that the hotel does not employ at least some locals - everyone seemed to be Polish (very pleasant, efficient and well trained, though)
Review 29:This is a wonderful location. The hotel is very comfortable, the staff are well trained. Very good choice for breakfast.
Review 30:Just distance from the town centre
Review 31:Hotel and staff were really friendly and food was lovely. Room was nice with good view. Hotel a bit far out of the centre but we really enjoyed the stay
Review 32:The bathroom in our room was fairly poor. The shower had incredibly low water pressure, and when I mentioned it to reception they simply said that all the rooms in the main building were like that.
Review 33:The hotel and grounds were very attractive. The sherry on arrival was a nice touch too. The food was excellent. The lounges were very nice to relax in.
Review 34:I loved everything
Review 35:Tha staff, the location and grounds, the rooms, the beds and cleanliness, the serenity, the food was absolutely amazing and the attention fabulous. I could not find fault with anything at all
Review 36:No hot water at all during our stay. Other guests were questioned at breakfast the following day, and agreed there was no hot water, but did not complain. The set meal was approximately 30% more expensive that similar class restaurant/ hotels and five pounds for a bottle of water on top of paying £100 for dinner for two was exorbitant. Avoid this chain of hotels!
Review 37:Staff were the greatest asset of this hotel
Review 38:Wi-fi would not work and reception staff were unhelpful and unwilling to resolve the issue. I had to drive 10 miles to get some important emails. Meals were so-so and very poor value. Credit card surcharge was the last straw. Never again.
Review 39:Comfortable room. Superb views together with friendly and capable serving staff Good standards of cleanliness.
Review 40:We arrived for a Sunday night stay and for a bar meal we chose steak from the menu - they had run out of steak- breakfast they had run out of tomatoes and black pudding for the cooked breakfast - no substitute was offered for these. So breakfast was 1 piece of bacon 1 sausage and the egg, looking a little lost on a rather large plate!!the bedroom was great.
Review 41:No bad experience, but a number of minor gripes detracted from our overall enjoyment, such as poor shower, cold tap running hot at times, paper not delivered to room, safe requiring repair, Wi-fi useless.
Review 42:Location, quality of food, extreme friendliness of staff.
Review 43:Really irritated by request for personal details (including date of birth) before you could log onto their wifi.
Review 44:Great location and very good room but dinner VERY slow
Review 45:Inexperienced staff - had to keep reminding them of drinks order for example. Nouvelle cuisine - Very poor evening meal by modern standards - and at a high price. Kippers could be ordered for breakfast at an extra charge.
Review 46:Location only.
Review 47:No direct WiFi connection.Only able to access Internet via iCloud which we do not use.Wine on expensive side
Review 48:Pleasant helpful staff.Picturesque location overlooking lake Excellent menu.Situated within reasonable distance to many attractions Room opened onto garden
Review 49:£40 for soup and a piece of chicken is robbery. It's a take it or leave it fixed price dinner menu and we don't eat sweets as we are diabetic. Allow plenty of time it took 45 min for the cold starter to arrive then another 35 min for the main course. We complained on the first night and were told they were thinking about changing things, they need to, we have been there many times over twenty years, not sure we will return This smacks of central management incompetence being imposed from afar
Review 50:Great location lovely staff
Review 51:They need a lift - carrying a heavy suitcase up and down stairs was hard going. Ask for a lake view - our view over the roof tops was horrid.
Review 52:Lovely location. Great dinner even if it was pricey.
Review 53:Service was haphazard, had to wait to get into our room, poor service in bar and lounges, wifi non existent which is really not expected at such a price of hotel. Was not quite sure if anyone was actually in charge of the place.
Review 54:Great views, lovely room, great balcony with views of lake and mountain, real country house hotel feel, good gardens
Review 55:Sunday breakfast didn't start until 8am - travelling with a young child that is actually a bit late.
Review 56:Location is lovely, lounges and dining room and bedrooms are all an exceptionally high standard.
Review 57:variable service at breakfast - day one - poor/slow: day 2 - all that it should be. Generally the staff tried hard but the management seemed to have them hog-tied. No wifi. No privacy in down-stairs rooms at the front.
Review 58:location
Review 59:Room 8 had hideous view over flat felt roof with kitchen ducting on it. The bathroom was tiny and there was no hot water and the shower was dreadful. Decoration in need of serious updating.
Review 60:Location
Review 61:the bed was soft. the room was too hot. the window had a crack in it and the shower was poor. it trickled out. the fan in the bathroom was very noisy. a real shame as first impressions of the hotel when we pulled up were really good and the look of the inside on entry.
Review 62:lovely location. friendly and helpful staff. lovely hotel.
Review 63:For a 4* hotel we felt a little short changed. No one helped us with our bags or told us where our room was. The prices of the fixed menu (there is no other option) was around £40 per head, no option of having just a main. The food was lovely but no better than a gastro pub. It felt like the prices of a better hotel, the service isnt slick enough to charge £120 for dinner + one drink each for 2 adults.
Review 64:Beautiful location.
Review 65:The hit water kept turning cold in the shower. I complained to the manager as the breakfast service was a descrace. Had toast 25 mins before breakfast arrived so cold, wrong breakfast brought out, one table spoon of beans given. Breakfast was warm not hot. unable to obtain any Wi fi at all throughout my stay. The bar was a tiny room which is an insult to call it a bar. The garden staff working early with loud machinery.
Review 66:The room was clean and comfortable to stay in.
Review 67:room had a window only and gloomy and overlooked the car park. Worst room we have had in many visits - the view/location is paramount when you are on Ullswater! This was advertised as an executive room?
Review 68:The staff in the lounge3s/dining areas were excellent- attentive helpful and polite
Review 69:It would be helpful to have more hotel information such as time of breakfast and location of dining room and bar etc.
Review 70:Had the Garden Suite with a balcony fantastic views of the lake. It was brilliant. Very comfortable bed and the complimentary afternoon tea was lovely.
Review 71:No Key to room .No information from the reception about any facilities, no times offered or given about meal times and none of this information in the room. Evening meal very expensive and one of the worst we have ever had.
Review 72:We were in room 36 which I found quite dark. Our stay was only one night and we were out most of the time, just returning for bed, so this didn't bother us. However a longer stay may not be so pleasant. Balcony rooms were £60 more expensive a night!
Review 73:The staff were all friendly and attentive. It is a lovely old building and has been carefully decorated to suit the surroundings. We were delighted to get complimentary cream teas on arrival which we enjoyed on the terrace overlooking pond and lake, perfect.
Review 74:The services in their restaurant is not good. Stand there and wait for a table for five minutes, the waitress just come and go in front of us, and no one cares about us. There are only 6 customer in the restaurant at the time.
Review 75:Clean and comfortable
Review 76:Lack of support for disabled customer (ie had to climb stairs to room) There was a very inconvenient issue with keys which was not resolved until 7.30 pm (several trips to reception were required) The pillows were too firm The bacon was overlooked and leathery
Review 77:Location, tranquility, excellent food
Review 78:Wifi was terrible Signal also non-existent meaning you literally were cut off from any network! Bed has a huge ridge in the centre where the two single beds met. View from my room (11) was poor.
Review 79:Location View from the back garden area Breakfast
Review 80:There was only one piece of bacon for breakfast and also the bar prices were very expensive. £12.50 for a bottle of cider and a martini and lemonade
Review 81:The staff were very professional and at the same time very friendly. The bed was the most comfortable we've ever slept in as well.
Review 82:Nothing really, they could have made better use of their section of lake frontage, maybe some seats or decking so you could linger and enjoy the lake.
Review 83:We enjoyed the free cram tea which was a nice surprise when we arrived. The room was comfortable but didn't have a view of the lake.
Review 84:Our first night's room was small, with a view over the air conditioning unit, a bedside lamp that did not work, a standard double bed, a slow shower, and the sound of rushing water all night.
Review 85:I mentioned the issues with the first room to reception after a rather poor night's sleep and we were able to change room for the second night (for which we had paid considerably more) - now we had a lovely view, peace and quiet, a larger more elegant space, better bathroom, and large adjoining twin beds which suited us well. We felt that the staff warmed to us as time went on! Excellent evening suppers by the fireside. Waited on hand and foot.
Review 86:A fantastic hotel in a superb location. All the staff were very helpful, caring and just brilliant. The room was exceptionally good and large with every extra which made our stay so very pleasant and comfortable
Review 87:The location of the hotel and the cleanliness. The room was superb with French windows to the garden and fantastic views. All the staff were so very helpful and particularly in the dining room
Review 88:Our room had a problem with air in the water pipes which made a noise and disturbed our sleep. Also felt the prices were a little excessive.
Review 89:The views, the location and staff
Review 90:Faulty Towers service in the restaurant and the poor quality breakfast - they didn't know how to cook poached eggs
Review 91:The very comfortable bed and large modern clean bathroom. Location was amazing
Review 92:We were disappointed in our cooked breakfast. The food was only barely warm and the toast was soft.
Review 93:The hotel is in the most wonderful location, with grounds leading down to the lake. Our room and the facilities are excellent.
Review 94:The evening meal was good; good menu choice but the food was cold. The same happened at breakfast; cold scrambled eggs and mushrooms. We should have complained but were too polite to do so.
Review 95:The staff were truly delightful and the setting was stunning. Our room was enormous and very comfortable.
Review 96:Not enough disabled car parking spaces. No maintenance people available on site to repair the plumbing fault in our room no. 23 hence no hot water in the hand basin. The restaurant menu the same for three days.
Review 97:The staff were very friendly. The cleaners in the bedroom were excellent, clean towels changed reg. the bed turned down and tea and coffee always there.
Review 98:Comfortable hotel. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. Our rooms were beautifully decorated and the bathrooms spacious. Fabulous location, right on the banks of the Lake.
Review 99:Nothing to complain about at all
Review 100:Everything from friendly welcome. View from bedroom lovely lounges drawing rooms fantastic attentive staff gorgeous food went half board which was v good value. The gardens roll down to lakeside lovely strolls.
Review 101:Couldn't fault anything.
Review 102:Absolutely everything - comfortable room which was beautifully furnished, excellent food, courteous and friendly staff, location.
Review 103:No hot water in morning of departure about 9.00pm - not the only guest who mentioned this.
Review 104:Lovely view from Room 2 - balcony had it not been foul weather. New beds very comfortable and firm.
Review 105:A lot of older guests reading, napping and listening to classical music in all 3 lounge rooms. Would have been nice to have one room a bit less dated where you wouldn't have felt guilty for talking or laughing, however it was pleasant to relax in peace. Evening food ordered from bar lacked a little on taste. Ordered burger and it was simply a burger on a roll, no cheese, tomato, gherkin or Mayo. You did get chips though with ketchup on the side.
Review 106:Stunning Views Clean Rooms Comfy Bed Power Shower Slow Internet but advertised as having no internet so this is a plus :) Staff Pleasant Lovely unexpected complimentary cream tea on arrival with freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream with a little pot of tea each - very civilised! Spoiled at Breakfast - Lovely buffet and option of hot breakfast cooked to order or porridge with tea and fresh oj.
Review 107:We booked in for an evening meal at the restaurant, which has a very good reputation however I was very disappointed in this as we were waiting an hour and fifteen minutes in between our starters and main course as our meals were accidently given to someone else. The staff had only noticed this when I flagged up that we had been waiting. When the food did arrive it was not up the standard I would expect and to make matters worse we were offered no apology or discount for the inconvenience of waiting.
Review 108:The location was wonderful. The hotel itself was very nice, and the staff on reception were very helpful.
Review 109:It doesn't have a bar to create a central meeting room, therefore it wasn't easy to meet other guests and socialise. It's very quiet with two lounges neither with music, just piece and quiet. Not a bad thing, but most people retired to their rooms after dinner.
Review 110:The gardens, the staff, the style and the views. It is nice Country hotel with great views.
Review 111:Unable to open a window at night because the garden rooms only have french doors. But very convenient for the dog. Wifi week
Review 112:Beautiful location. Lovely garden to exercise the dog - no sheep! Very relaxed atmosphere. Convenient from the motorway. Friendly staff.
Review 113:Staff should speak slower and more clearly./No hot water on arrival./We didn't get shown to dining room, or told there was a spa! /Breakfast items should be labled or more help given. My poached egg was not cooked through!
Review 114:Lovely setting, very nice room, big bed very comfortable, nice to have a balcony overlooking the lovely gardens etc. Excellent evening meal.
Review 115:The atmosphere was too formal, staff need to relax a bit. Dinner and drinks very overpriced.
Review 116:Great setting on the lake, nice rooms, beautiful building, great breakfast
Review 117:no dog or rubbish bins outside hotel.no water taps to wash the dog before going to room. overpriced fee of £15 per day for no facilities
Review 118:comfortable bed , spacious room. relaxing quiet picturesque surroundings
Review 119:We were taken to a bedroom that had not been made up since the last occupant. The receptionist came very quickly and apologised and took us to a new room.however it was not the welcome we expected. The wine was very expensive in the bar!
Review 120:The location.
Review 121:The Discordant jazz type of music in the dining room at breakfast and dinner was intrusive, and jarred with the majestic views and elegant room.
Review 122:The location and the welcome - Sandra on the front desk was particularly warm, friendly and helpful.
Review 123:Cooked breakfast. Produce was good but found that it was very greasy.
Review 124:Location was perfect, staff were all friendly and room was spacious and spotless.Only there for a short time but was very pleased with what we saw and experienced.Upgraded room gave us some outside space which was ideal as weather was good.
Review 125:The only very minor annoyance was the piped music in one of the Lounges in the evening. It would have been really nice just to relax in front of a cosy log fire, listening to the tick of the Grandfather Clock and soaking up the ambiance of the property.
Review 126:Just about everything. The views of the lake were stunning look towards High Street and How Town. There was one particular area in the lounge we liked to sit in overlooking the lake and snow covered fells after breakfast with a coffee Latte. We found it very difficult to leave so a big thank you to everyone at the hotel.
Review 127:Eater anywhere is pricey so its hard to judge whether the hotel was a tad expensive per night as we booked last minute so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Review 128:Lovely hotel, perfect location away from hustle and madness of Windermere Gardens are beautiful as is the view from the bedrooms If you can budget for a suite, book it you won't regret it
Review 129:The whole experience made me feel like I was being milked for my money. Extra charges for vegetables??????????? £5 for a few pence worth. It didn't need to be so expensive and I would use it more if it wasn't.
Review 130:The comfort and location were great
Review 131:Reception doesn't reserve a table for you to eat in the restaurant automatically, we tried to and it was full. Book ahead!
Review 132:Very comfortable rooms with wonderful lake views. Excellent lounge areas with real fires and attentive staff.
Review 133:The water was temperamental, it would suddenly stop mid shower but it is an old building with character so can be overlooked.
Review 134:The friendly staff who you would see working until 11 at night and would be back at breakfast with a smile on their face.
Review 135:Not much to find wrong !
Review 136:Staff very attentive and friendly. Service not rushed but on time. The food throughout was first class - beautifully prepared and presented. Compliments to the Chef and his aides! Well done:
Review 137:No room in the restaurant to eat (one of the only reasons we booked a Macdonald Hotel) ordered room service over 1 hour and 10 minutes later still no food!!would have paid £320 to eat in our hotel room, we decided to leave once the food did not turn up and the neighbours dog insisted on barking for a full hour non stop. Stayed in hundreds of hotels this one is not worth the price tag it charges.
Review 138:The staff are polite
Review 139:The water pressure was the only downside however there is the option of the very deep bath. This would not deter another stay.
Review 140:the location was wondrous, the decor was luxurious, the service was excellent and the staff were highly competent who take their amazing guest experience to another level. Karen, Alec and their team made our stay that little bit more perfect. We will certainly return.
Review 141:Room was cold on arrival & receptionist plugged a heater in that was already in the room when heating was on max radiators were Luke warm but having little heater on all the time was noisey & in the morning it was cold.our room was 10 & we paid for an upgrade aswell which I think should be refunded because of heating.
Review 142:Breakfast service staff couldn't do enough for u
Review 143:Poor wifi system. Pillows. Booked two balcony rooms. Paid same price for both. But one bathroom far superior to the other. Happy with both, but feel there should be a difference in price. Also feel in the superior rooms, fridges could be supplied as an extra. Look at Premier Inn for pillows.!! All in all, nitpicking. Stunning hotel.
Review 144:The marvellous views. Staff. Cleanliness.
Review 145:Mobile signal non existant. Wifi very poor. For a hotel of this calibre you should have an in house strong wifi signal and not use the "cloud" which is complicated to access, weak, and does not allow streaming. A mini bar in room would be usefull.
Review 146:Room was clean and comfortable, staff friendly and helpful, games for kids very useful. Gardens and lake walks beautiful.
