Reviews for Fairmont St Andrews, Scotland

Review 1:The smoking area in front of the back entrance needs to be equipped with some heaters and sheds especially during the freezing weather

Review 2:The friendly staff gives the feeling that we are at home.

Review 3:I felt the room cleanliness wasn't quite what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. It was by no means dirty but there was little things such as dust in the room, bits of dust on the ceiling, the mirror in the bathroom still had splashes on it and bits had been missed whilst hoovering.

Review 4:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful during our stay. The hotel was in a beautiful setting right by the sea and it was quite breathtaking driving up the long driveway.

Review 5:Restaurant Service was better on our previous visit. Breakfast service was restricted by inexperienced staff and closure of main dining area

Review 6:Very Comfortable , warm, friendly, clean

Review 7:With the volume of people staying that weekend, the staff service and food was to the highest standard. I was extremely satisfied with the breakfast buffet.

Review 8:There is a lot of work going on at the Fairmont from January 2016 so not all facilities are available - bit frustrating but great communication from the hotel about what is & isn't available and when.

Review 9:A warm welcome and excellent service awaits you at the Fairmont. Staff can't do enough for you from reception to the spa and in bars and restaurants. We had a great dinner at La Cucina, the Italian, followed by expertly made drinks in the Rock and Spindle. Breakfast was top quality - especially the sausages and haggis - after a relaxing night's sleep. Felt like we'd really treated ourselves and would definitely come back for a special occasion.

Review 10:Pool and leisure centre dirty. Pool smelled of goldfish bowl and had algy around the edges. Floors of changing rooms were dirty on both days. Not sure if this is because the staff don't clean enough or because those using the facilities don't care about walking around with their outdoor shoes on. Long black hairs and paper towels in the sinks on both days - not very pleasant. Queues for breakfast and rather disappointing, dried up food from the breakfase buffet. This is definately the poorest 5 star hotel I've been in - not sure it should be classed as such.

Review 11:Big clean room wit hot spacious bathroom. Nice spaces for leisure. Free use of snooker table in bar. Very friendly door staff.

Review 12:The only negative was the bar. The service was very poor, understaffed and pressure on staff reflected in their attitude and lack of enthusiasm. The cleanliness and overall experience did not support £28 for 2 drinks! We did try twice more and this was definitely not an exception but the norm, consequence of which we opted out!

Review 13:Felt like part of a family, nothing was too much trouble, our 3 dogs were welcomed, excellent room service, front of house are best ever, deluxe suite was perfect as was all food, including Xmas day lunch which exceeded our expectations and then some!! Great gym facility and a location to die for - will definitely be back.

Review 14:Breakfast was only served til 10am this felt a bit rushed especially as we read 11am on the in room service list.

Review 15:The staff were very friendly and attentative, and even remembered our dogs name the next day. We were given a complimentary christmas cake as we were staying on Christmas eve. The food at the Bar and Grill was outstanding. A fabulous trip!

Review 16:No nice view without paying extra, our room overlooked the roof of the atrium.

Review 17:First impression is amazing. Loved the valet parking and friendly staff. Loved the room, big comfy bed and huge bath/shower room. Food was wonderful.

Review 18:Having to take a taxi in and out of town.

Review 19:Comfortable room, good leisure facilities. Breakfast was excellent. Hotel provided us with a room with a view which is what we asked for so well done.

Review 20:Breakfast is a bit average and although waiting staff were nice, chefs making eggs were a bit miserable and unhelpful.perhaps they need a bit of motivation/training?

Review 21:Views and clubhouse restaurant

Review 22:The only down side is the dining facilities are restricted to 2 restaurants and 1 snack area. A semi formal dining area in the main hotel would solve a slight lack of dining areas.

Review 23:The hotel is superb and made even more so by the staff. from the door men to the room attendants everyone of them was most polite but friendly

Review 24:Room perfect (upgraded). Bed, pillows and linen great, (very clean). Staff polite and efficient. Breakfast very enjoyable. Celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. Will be back. Hope we get another upgrade. Went on a weekday for the cheaper rate.

Review 25:Prices for drinks are ridiculous!!! Clearly catering for the tourists and its very obvious. Stayed in better hotels with more realistic prices attached. Maybe dog friendly but not ideal for taking your dog to stay here. No bins available for doggie doings and no immediate outdoor access. Also no areas to have your dog with you in any bar.

Review 26:Lovely clean room and great bathroom. Breakfast very good and great choices. Great location with lovely views.

Review 27:The staff couldn't do enough to help you and everything was so clean, comfortable and of excellent quality. The meal at the St Andrews Bar and Grill in the evening was superb and highly recommended. There was a luxury Christmas fair on during the day on the Saturday and Sunday with a choir and dancing display to make the event feel even more festive and enjoyable.

Review 28:One of the restaurants (the grill)was closed which was disappointing. Limited choice in bar menu. Italian was nice but very overpriced!

Review 29:Lovely big comfortable room. Enjoyed leisure facilities

Review 30:Room too hot and couldn't work the ac controller. Would have liked milk for our coffee in the morning, it wasn't replaced after the first night! Wanted a file and polish in toes but spa couldn't fit me in!

Review 31:Bright roomy hotel. Comfortable spacious rooms. Breakfast very good.

Review 32:Tiny things in the bathroom area. It would be good to have cotton buds with the toiletries. Also the magnifying mirror would not vary in height and had no light.

Review 33:helpful kind, caring, friendly staff. Spa facilities Views Restaurant Consistent welcome

Review 34:Staff were wonderful and obviously on a mission to ensure guests enjoyed best possible experience. Breakfast was amazing. Lovely place for a special treat.

Review 35:One very minor point. We had to appeal to the bar managers assistance to watch the football on Match of the day with drinks! When the staff wanted to lock up and go home.

Review 36:Fantastic

Review 37:The atmosphere in the hotel was very friendly and we enjoyed a very relaxing break. Enjoyed our meals in la Cucina and in the Grill room and was grateful for the transport down to the clubhouse on a very windy and wet December evening.

Review 38:The hotel looked lively on arrival by then inside it felt like a shopping mall or departure lounge in an airport.. No atmosphere at all and not five star. The duvet was thin and past its best and the pillows filled with polyester. I won't go back!

Review 39:The breakfast was excellent!

Review 40:I was expecting more for the price - it was nicer but not sure it was the best value for money. Spa was only ok. More of a 'resort' style hotel that I was expecting.

Review 41:Lovely hotel in great surroundings. Wonderful view, great staff, comfortable rooms.

Review 42:Cheap toilet paper & weirdly the coffee machine has 3 pods but yet it has 2 biscuits. A ménage a trois? Extra pods are in a locked drawer at Reception. Staff are clearly I trusted. Also the Golf Cafe/Restaurant was CLOSED. Cost reductions we guess. Tight! Wrong!

Review 43:Valet parking!! Fab

Review 44:Room very dusty. Didnt eat breakfast as too expensive. Didnt realise it was not included. Not hotels fault as we did a late deal on the web.

Review 45:Big comfy bed. Big room. Fluffy towels. If you like golf - perfect

Review 46:Mentioned many times that we were staying for my husband's 30th birthday and made a note on the booking, for a top hotel would have been nice had they gone the extra mile and done something nice for it.

Review 47:Beautiful location, great golf course

Review 48:Paid extra for a golf course view however we had just the car park directly in front of us. I wouldn't pay extra again.

Review 49:Beautiful hotel in a great location, served by delightful staff.

Review 50:Disappointed The Rock and Spindle was closed Sunday night.

Review 51:Lovely hotel, staff are all very helpful and friendly, especially Evelyn at breakfast in The Squires. Breakfast was great too. Spent a lovely afternoon in the Spa.

Review 52:There was a conference on the morning we had breakfast and not enough tables were set so we had to wait 15 mins to be seated for breakfast, not ideal.

Review 53:Leisure facilities were of a high standard. Staff very friendly and accommodation luxurious.

Review 54:Did not like having to be bussed to the restaurant for dinner. Have never stayed in a hotel here the main dining room is not internally located.

Review 55:Bedroom/bathroom excellent. Staff very attentive.

Review 56:We didn't realise the Squire restaurant was no longer in operation for dinner. The bar and grill was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. (The 2 nights we were there.) The Cocktail Bar was also closed. This left only the Italian restaurant or Kittoch Bar for food, which although the food was ok, it was vastly overpriced for basically pub grub. ( and we were overcharged £6 for the bottle of mediocre wine, although it was corrected after my husband pointed it out.) The breakfast buffet on the first day was hardly warm at best and the scrambled egg which was made on the spot was like rubber. I was here 2 years ago and enjoyed it so much i was looking forward to going back, but unfortunately was very disappointed this time. I don't think we will be back.

Review 57:We upgraded, therefore the room was quite large and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 58:Unfortunate weather, so no golf, but we can't hold you responsible for that.

Review 59:V comfortable room, outstanding breakfast. Tried to eat in one night but failed as function on in one restaurant and so we should have booked earlier for the other. Staff welcoming and helpful.

Review 60:Very minor moans - shortbread packet had been opened in room with a biscuit removed; no shampoo first day, someone came into room and said they thought the room was vacant on our last morning. We had booked dinner but the restaurant was closed and no-one had informed us. My daughter was sold tablets for a headache for which you would have needed to take 12 tablets and if taking that many need to take a tablet to protect your stomach!

Review 61:The staff were all lovely, really friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet could not be improved, all the family thought it delicious.

Review 62:Food and drinks are very very expensive and to be honest a rip off as the quality of food is average . I've been to this Hotel Twice now and arrived after 15:00 every time and the room is never ready which isn't great.

Review 63:The Hotel Porter is an absolute star, very helpful and makes you feel very welcome . Room is good . Great views !

Review 64:Nothing at all.

Review 65:Best break we've had for a long while. Staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for you. The facilities were also first class.

Review 66:Reservation of spa treatments could not be found and no explanation was offered. Grateful for complementary treatments next day but still very disappointing.

Review 67:Location and facilities were good

Review 68:The booking in desk, made numerous mistakes! The main one regarding my credit and debit cards, unforgivable!!

Review 69:Courtesy bus, staff, room and clenliness!

Review 70:Excellent hotel. Very professional and friendly staff. Service was extremely good. Rooms were of a good size and very comfortable with everything you would expect. Ample parking including valet service. Location is ten minutes drive from St Andrews but the shuttle bus or extremely reliable taxis meant it was never a problem.Take a business card from the taxi driver to ensure you can call a cab for the trip back to the hotel. We did this and the taxi was at the restaurant in three minutes from our call. Approximately £10 for the fare. Can't fault anything with the hotel. The staff make the experience all that better. Everyone from housekeeping to front of house were extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 71:the swimming pool was full of kids splashing and jumping in off the sides.

Review 72:the comfort of the room plus friendliness of all staff ,breakfast was great .

Review 73:staff couldn't do enough especially the concierges, davie in particular, but all staff very courteous and couldn't do enough, in fact we have booked again to go in december

Review 74:Our room had a large damp patch on the ceiling and a drip from the air conditioning, strange to given a room with obvious problems. We got moved room to one with huge cobwebs/ dust hanging from the ceiling

Review 75:Great choice at breakfast

Review 76:Only thing I could complain about was price of breakfast. We had to pay£14 each. Making our stay £247. Our friends booked and paid £229 withbreakfast included. Felt slightly cheated by booking.com

Review 77:Nothing was too much trouble. Celebrities were staying there and we wereall treat the same

Review 78:Did not like being unable to have breakfast in my room as part of B and B package by paying extra tray charge. Have always used this facility and was very disappointed to discover no longer available.

Review 79:Location and quality of rooms

Review 80:Nothing!

Review 81:Location, location, location! Just a short drive outside town, the large extremely airy hotel has a peaceful calmness about it. Excellent facilities and DOGS are welcome!

Review 82:Sauna/ Steamroom Area - too loud for relaxation! Perhaps a separate area for relaxation? A quiet room?

Review 83:Friendly, highly professional staff - cheerful doormen - lovely atmosphere throughout our stay.

Review 84:When we arrived in the room we opened the fridge there was off milk spilt everywhere, we reported it to reception and they send someone up but it was still not cleaned properly.

Review 85:The food was excellent down at restaurant Bessie the golf course, and the staff were excellent.

Review 86:Always get recognised as a returning customer. Received complementary chocolates this time too! Female bus driver on shuttle bus recognised us and as usual was very friendly and engaging. We have been staying, usually twice a year for around 5 years now and each stay is always special.

Review 87:Every member of staff we came in contact with were extremely efficient and friendly. The gents at the entrance were great parking and dropping off my car. Our SPA treatments were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Review 88:Not the hotels fault but a drunken group of golfers certainly impacted negatively on our dining experience on Sunday evening.

Review 89:Staff were very friendly and polite. Nothing was too much trouble.

Review 90:one of our parties lost a couple of packages which was supposed to be delivered to their room but was accidentally picked up by another couple who was checking out. the staff was delinquent in checking what actually happened, which precluded any good outcome of the mistake.

Review 91:breakfast buffet was excellent, the surrounding area was gorgeous.

Review 92:I didn't realise that the Fairmont was so far out of the St Andrew township

Review 93:Fairmont Hotels are in a class of their own, the St Andrew hotel keeps up the standard.

Review 94:While the hotel had the bones of a magnificent place it lacked the touches that would make it luxurious rather than hackneyed corporate. It lacked the finer touches. I felt the room and bathroom were tired and could be made sharper. Backslashes in the bathroom should be regrouted and the wood furniture should be polished and smudge free. The pillows were very uncomfortable. Wifi was slow except in the middle of the night. I felt that the breakfast tables should have had linens on them and the breads should not have had the feel of mass produced. I hate to seem petty but when you pay $1200 for 2 nights in a hotel you should feel totally pampered and while the staff were welcoming and friendly the hotel did not warrent the rates charged.

Review 95:I loved the location, the view and all the staff we met there. There was a great welcome and care. The bed itself was comfortable. Food in the Italian restaurant was very good and the sausage at breakfast was good.

Review 96:Could not eat at Clubhouse either night due to golf events.

Review 97:Lovely spacious room with a view! Great breakfast! Most helpful staff! Loved the walking path to St. Andrews!!!

Review 98:In the room were not slippers. In the bathroom was only one small bottle with shampoo , it was insufficiently for two adults.

Review 99:The friendly staff on reception. Tasty and cosy Italian restaurant. Excellent location

Review 100:I booked through Booking.com ( who were terrific). I unexpectedly had to depart one day early on a three day reservation. Booking.com confirmed with hotel that I would not be charged for the last night. When I got my bill they had charged me anyway. Then the hotel made me endure a bit of a "runaround" as they tried to back off on their commitment to not charge for the last night. It has colored my impression of this establishment and I would hesitate to rebook there.

Review 101:Wasn't 5 star. Not value for money. 2 single beds shoved together is not 5 star. Staff forgot to book our taxi while we waited outside for it to never arrive. Nobody informed us there was a courtesy bus every hour while we racked up the taxi bills

Review 102:Over priced, No free water in room (no free anything in room) Our first room had a faulty door lock... we wasted two hours on being moved to an up graded room , that was exactly the same but not properly prepared. Vastly overpriced drinks. no atmosphere miles of empty corridors Unable to book any treatments in spa. overpriced souless italian

Review 103:Breakfast ... leaving

Review 104:Everything! Room was a great size & the staff were friendly & professional. The swimming pool was also a great attraction for our 4 year old & breakfast was amazing! We liked all the extras you get when you stay in a hotel such as the Fairmont - professional & attentive staff; room service, great quality dining; lovely bathroom toiletries etc. It was also family friendly which was surprising for a 5 star hotel.

Review 105:It is a little out of the way which is ok if thats what you are looking for.

Review 106:Very comfortable hotel. Rooms are very nice with plenty of room to move around.

Review 107:We had booked based on arriving at 1300 in order to be in our suite and able to feed our infant daughter, unfortunately our room was not ready until 1545 meaning we had to hang about waiting. No alternative was offered an neither was any attempt to compensate.

Review 108:.staff should be more informative..phone calls international cost a lot and we were not properly informed... Golf pro shop closed too early...needs more staff you feel sometimes..WiFi weak

Review 109:nice views..good golfing facilities... Nice breakfast

Review 110:The bar food was poor - cold and not very tasty, but that wouldn't stop me staying again, I'll just pre-book one of the restaurants next time.

Review 111:Beautiful hotel, great staff, service, comfortable room, views to die for. Nicest hotel I've stayed in for a while.

Review 112:Furniture in lounge / bar area was tired. Bit disappointed that there were far better deals available which included dinner after I had booked B&B rate!!!!!!!

Review 113:Nothing to fault - secured bike parking and bike routes may open a whole new set of business though. Excellent location for this.

Review 114:Exceptional service, happy staff and enthusiastic concierge. Room phenomenal - Executive suite for a weekend road biking in and around St Andrews. A huge hotel but nevertheless the service made it feel welcoming, personalised and I would definitely go back.

Review 115:Unfortunately, the first night was very busy in the bar area, this resulted in a rather long wait for food and drink! On complaining the manager resolved the situation to our satisfaction!

Review 116:We have visited the hotel often and the facilities plus staff are excellent!

Review 117:We had a caterpillar walk of our plate whilst eating dinner and after telling the staff the manager shrugged his sholders to tell us this happens all the time and get on with it. Service terrible!!!!

Review 118:Air conditioning to cool and and room with no outlook. other than looking at glass roof. After discussion offered better room ie view of car park. But £30.00 night supplement.

Review 119:Location and parking

Review 120:rooms / decor is getting dated. shuttle to st andrews was full when we went to go - had to pay for a taxi instead which was disappointing considering the shuttle holds 8 people max (if i remember correctly). dont think it would be out the question to have made another trip to accomodate?

Review 121:very welcoming staff, fantastic breakfast

Review 122:Dirty bathroom, asking from things like paper and slippers but never recovered them! Housekeeping making room up for next guest before we checked out!

Review 123:went for ruby wedding and husbands 70th birthday, Treated like royalty everything was just perfect especially Luca and his staff in the clubhouse where we had dinner

Review 124:My wallet shrinking, but it was worth the two days of luxury.

Review 125:The property is in a beautiful location, overlooking pristine golf courses, white sand beaches and the town of St. Andrews about a mile away. The staff is perfectly trained and we were comfortable at all times. Excellent for a relaxing weekend.

Review 126:The air conditioning making the dining room draughty is not pleasant. The hot meal for the breakfast is cold as was the pancakes. The chef was struggling to make an omelette and fry eggs as the pans are so old they stick .The toast is brought to the table before you have cereal consequently it is cold and rubbery by the time you are ready to eat it.

Review 127:Certainly not the lack of view from the bedroom window.or the long walk to the lifts or the keys which did not open the door meaning another trip to reception for another one.

Review 128:There was nothing we didn't like. My husband does all the cooking so he was delighted to sit down to a meal but was so disappointed to find no steak in his steak & vegetable pie :(

Review 129:The grandeur of the hotel, the swimming and the breakfast :)

Review 130:Pool was quite cool and the hot tub was not working :( Didn't realize the resort was not walking distance to St.Andrews when made the booking.

Review 131:Food was excellent at the Italian restaurant.

Review 132:No complaints

Review 133:Staff were very polite & helpful. Our room was excellent as were the spa facilities. The breakfast couldn't have been any better. Can't wait to go back.
