Reviews for The Gables Hotel

Review 1:We didn't realise that the function on hogmanay was a separate entity and was to be paid when booking (unaware when booking) Invitation/itinary in room, checked that it was for us and advised accordingly - wrongly! - checked after first part of event and found we could not be accommodated, however very kind staff sorted it so that we could attend after the meal - thankyou! On second day issues with cleaners NOT making the bed, cleaning bathroom etc fortunately we had had a problem with our keycard and the receptionist on duty got the cleaners to return and do what they were supposed to (grudgingly though!!) I did speak with the manager who was very sympathetic, so all in all it was rectified and did not really spoil our time there! Thankyou!

Review 2:Really beautiful room, four poster bed and spa bath well worth the extra cost well appointed and lovely on arrival - prosecco on ice and chocolates were nice touches welcoming reception staff were helpful and attentive and really lovely atmosphere. Cleaners very helpful on arrival. Food exceptionally good quality and well presented. Bar and witing staff courteous and keen to help. Manager very approachable and seems to maintain a happy workforce! Will be back if the things we didn't like are addressed which I have every confidence they will be. Thankyou!

Review 3:The radiator in the room became noisy when I switched it off for overnight, but it settled down once I turned it back on '2'.

Review 4:5 minutes from Gretna Outlet, and a short journey into Carlisle. Plenty car parking at hotel. Facilities good. 2 chairs in a room for 2 people! Brilliant, as most only have 1 chair & the other person has to sit on the bed. TV with subtitle facility-my wife has some hearing loss and this means she can hear the TV without it being too loud.

Review 5:The bed was a little uncomfortable and the walls are quite thin. We were in the neighbouring room to another family with young children and I think we both disturbed each others sleep one way or another. Since the hotel was quite empty it might have been good if we had not been right next door to each other (but maybe these are the only two family rooms.

Review 6:Very friendly welcome and excellent service. We were quite late but got a lovely meal in the restaurant and catering for the needs of our 2 year old was no problem at all.

Review 7:We had booked a meal in the restaurant but when we went to eat it was closed so we had to go into the bar. There was a wedding on and bar was very crowded. Staff were very busy and preoccupied but eventually the wonderful Fiona took pity on us and found us a quiet room. Although we had to wait for our food it was excellent and worth the wait.

Review 8:Staff were friendly and rooms comfortable.

Review 9:Room smelt of cigarette smoke when first entering, I think this was because my room was right above where people stood to smoke outside Shower was completely useless, water for most of the time was luke warm at best and was little more than a trickle Wifi signal weak

Review 10:Staff in main bar and reception friendly

Review 11:Only criticism was I didn't like their beers limited choices

Review 12:Very helpful and friendly staff went out of their way to assist you. Good night's sleep and an excellent breakfast

Review 13:Shame about the shambles about the dinner. Was told we could get dinner on the Saturday night, we then came in at 6.00pm and was told no we could not have dinner. What a mess we ended up at a lovely pub up the road but we were very disappointed at being misled by the staff.

Review 14:Great staff, lovely room, very clean.

Review 15:Bathroom door stuck. Hot tap gave cold water and cold tap gave hot water. Breakfast service very very slow ---30 mins from order to serving. Said they were busy we could see they were not. small portions--half a slice of black pudding.

Review 16:quiet

Review 17:Good food, comfortable beds, nice little touches like tissues on the dressing table, toiletries in the bathroom and biscuits with the tea and coffee making facilities and of course the iron and ironing board

Review 18:The staff were rude. We were treated as an inconvenience. It took hours to get food. Even at the wedding reception, we had to clear tables ourselves.

Review 19:The hotel was close to the wedding venue.

Review 20:Just the wait for breakfast... But the actual food was fantastic.

Review 21:Just arriving at the hotel it was beautiful. Staff were warm and friendly. We had put in a cheeky request and it was granted! The room was large and clean. Large bathroom with jacuzzi bath and very large separate shower. Lovely gardens and decor, bar staff were warm and friendly too. Highly recommend.

Review 22:The staff were very friendly. Nice large rooms. The manager put herself out for us on more than one occasion. We were there for a special event and the staved made it even more enjoyable.

Review 23:Nothing at all

Review 24:The hotel and staff were excellent . We stayed at the hotel when we got married ten yrs ago and on this occasion they upgraded our room on our anniversary visit to a four poster room which was beautiful. The staff are really helpful and breakfast was enormous but really tasty. We couldn't fault our stay. Thankyou

Review 25:Room could have done with a dust ,bed not made up properly ie bottom sheet as it was when got out of it ,not to much of a problem but not the usual standard you get from this hotel our 4th time hear.will go again but not if standards go down this hotel has a good name other miner things noticed as to room cleaning may put some guests off?

Review 26:Friendly and welcoming staff good location for touring easy access to m way

Review 27:Check out time as we didn't get there till late the 10am check out time wasn't great

Review 28:Great location lovely building didn't stay for long so limited interaction with staff who were lovely beautiful place def stay again

Review 29:Plastic shower curtains and mattress covers Rooms need updating. Service a little slow in restaurant due to a wedding (not good excuse)

Review 30:Good value for money in a convenient location for our needs. Food good, friendly staff.

Review 31:hotel seemed short of staff ,the breakfast room only had one waitress on the 1st day who worked extremely hard for a very busy room , much better and more organised on 2nd morning though.

Review 32:staff very helpful and freindly, good old fashioned honesty and service.here for small family wedding[24].hotel very organised for this type of event.

Review 33:Very warm room and corridor. Couldn't control the heat. WE had a wedding party and so the staff were a bit stretched

Review 34:Very Convenient. Room well appointed.

Review 35:On arrival the outside of the hotel is very nice with a lovely display plants. The receptionist was very helpful although the reception area itself was very busy with lots of people who just seemed to be hanging around which given the way the desk was situated in the room made it feel quite intrusive when giving your details to the receptionist. The room itself was fine although we did find a few areas in the bathroom that were missed such as a dirty handrail and not so clean floor. We had dinner and breakfast which were both good and the staff were all very attentive.

Review 36:Bathroom had make up on floor behind the door. Hair in bath, shower had hardly any power, toilet kept making a noise for at least 40mins after a flush. No socket beside kettle had to put it asie bed. Receptionist didn't really care when I told her about

Review 37:Nothing.....

Review 38:Beds uncomfortable, pillows hard?? Plastic bath that bent and moved when using shower, cracks in tiles in bathroom, extractor fan not working in bathroom, towels were badly needing replaced, had to guess what the stuff in the bottles supplied in bathroom was (all labels said moisturiser, when it wasn't ) window in bedroom not working properly, room looked tired, busy hotel with noisy wedding parties who let children run up and down corridors slamming room doors. (Which tbf the hotel staff did deal with eventually) Meals were expensive for what was actually on plates, small portions, 'fancy presentation' cooked breakfast was the same.

Review 39:Staff were friendly and helpful ,great setting for hotel. Good base to visit other areas.

Review 40:Towels had seen better days Bathrooms a little tired and in need of refresh. The restaurant was full with two wedding parties and consequently we couldn't book the restaurant to eat.

Review 41:Staff were very friendly and approachable

Review 42:rooms seemed small / dark although comfy. do not pay extra for a four poster bed not fit for purpose needs binning/room 28/

Review 43:lovely well kept hotel ,gardens great. ideal location for a meal and wedding venue..

Review 44:having to go to reception to ask where the bar staff were. The wifi is terrible. The rooms are dated & need upgraded. Holes in the towels. Window hinge broken in my room so was unable to open window.

Review 45:The staff were very nice when they were there.

Review 46:Food could have been better quality and drink prices high. WiFi only in reception and slow.

Review 47:Close to motorway for over night stop, Nice hotel. Staff very good. Breakfast excellent.

Review 48:Could do to get rid of grubby white towels in rooms. Outside seating should be for non smokers as well or a separate area.

Review 49:Very friendly place. Could have been better with a few more staff. Was very busy and service a bit slow. Food was very good. Dinner and breakfast.

Review 50:night porter left us standing in the rain for over 15 minutes before he let us in despite knowing exactly when we would arrive. Breakfast was disgusting, hairs in the food and dry reheated haggis and bacon served with cold black toast

Review 51:very nice rooms, comfy beds and very clean

Review 52:We recently travelled to the gables as accommodation for our wedding party. The staff we're absolutely amazing, nothing was too much trouble. The room for our dinner was set up perfectly. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone and will hopefully be returning soon!

Review 53:Staff that couldn't do enough for you, service levels exceeding 5 star, amazing food, a beautiful building with a superb location. Would strongly recommend this Hotel; they've got the formula spot on. InterContinental Group, watch this space!!

Review 54:Nothing bad

Review 55:The staff were very friendly. We had an evening meal and breakfast and the food was well cooked and well presented. The cranachan desert was out of this world my compliments to the chef (Gillian wouldn't let me bring him home with me).

Review 56:The bed and the pillows was to hard compared to what we vere used to back home.

Review 57:The service was nice and the kitchen was the best compared to all the other plases whe stayed at during our wisit to Scotland.

Review 58:Original price at £190 was definitely overpriced, booking.com was worth it. Food was average and breakfast very poor with burnt omelette and dry rubbery bacon, black pudding and sausage.

Review 59:The room was nice and the spa bath lovely.

Review 60:the bathroom required an upgrade, bath had spillage marks and filter was clogged with hair, shower was only a trickle!

Review 61:staff were very friendly and likeable

Review 62:If anything there was a fire door located just outside our room and it banged loudly every time it was opened and closed! Otherwise a great hotel and a great chance for us to reminisce!

Review 63:We married at Gretna 20 years to the day of our visit and had stayed at the Gables with our family, so there were a lot of changes but everything was still great! The food was excellent and the staff were very attentive and we were made to feel very welcome.

Review 64:From the moment we arrived till the time we left all the staff from reception to the bar /restaurant staff and the lovely bedroom ladies all happy and helpful. Many thanks to you all for making our stay so nice

Review 65:Nothing at all !!

Review 66:Can I just let the management know what an amazing member of staff you have in Emma Cooper !!!! She has gone above and beyond in customer service from our very first phonecall , she has made a very stressful situation a perfect day , and I can't thank her enough ... She is totally AWESOME !!!! Thank you Emma for everything x

Review 67:The Chef adding Thai spices to steak pie. Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment. Sausages were spicy. Bacon overcooked and mushrooms I am pretty sure were tinned and had no taste whatsoever.

Review 68:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Roast beef on night 2 was absolutely delicious. Ditto the cheese and biscuits on night one. Prices were very good.Free champagne and goodies was lovely.

Review 69:Our room was on the first floor, it was quite noisy as he walls are very thin and there was a lot of door banging. We could clearly hear conversations in the next room!

Review 70:The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a very good selection at breakfast. Nice comfy areas in the bar.

Review 71:Got married here 10 years ago and it is always finding ways to improve their service and the staff are long term also that in itself says something about the hotel.

Review 72:We had friends join us for Dinner (the family of the gent who had died) This seemed to cause a problem as we were put in a bar restaurant on three separate tables there were 15 of us. Tables could easily have been put together. We couldn't really talk and we had travelled from Devon to be with our friends at a sad time. Service was slow, we weren't offered coffee after the meal and couldn't get a drink after 11pm (even coffee) even though we were residents.Shame it marred the hotel a little.

Review 73:the receptionists were very helpful before check in with room requirements, and in booking taxi's etc as we had to travel to Annan for a funeral. All the staff were very friendly only 'problem' we had was with dinner.

Review 74:Had a meal in the restaurant, starter was good, me and my wife ordered the roast dinner, the beef, gravy and Yorkshire puddings were beautiful but the mash potato was cold and the vegetable's were almost raw which let the meal down.

Review 75:Fantastic room with jacuzzi bath which was wonderful, the young man on the bar couldn't do enough for us considering he was running the bar and doing all the serving in the restaurant, really cosy feel to the whole place.

Review 76:Disappointed that we were unable to get a table in the restaurant in the evening of our stay. Ate in the bar but we're only couple eating there.

Review 77:Relaxing break in nice surroundings

Review 78:My room didn't get cleaned on my last night, due to staff shortage with the weather Bed never got made Room wasn't cleaned Had to ask for towels the last evening

Review 79:Staff that I did speak to were really friendly and helpful, could not fault them Food was good

Review 80:Didn't like that we were guests and not told restaurants was fully booked when we checked in, we had to have a bar meal which was ok but the staff were too busy in the restaurant so meal took too long also ran out off food on the bar menu.

Review 81:We like the friendliness of the staff including the cleaning and laundry staff. We have stayed there many a time as a stopping off point before heading to Glasgow. Always been made welcome and breakfast always great.

Review 82:Went for breakfast and there were no tables available was told "you can sit with somebody else or wait in reception for a table" decided to do neither and loaded car to depart which took approx 10 mins went to settle the bill to find the waitress looking for us but not to say a table was now ready BUT to tell me it wouldn't be long!!! Totally unacceptable !!!!

Review 83:Hotel location was good for us, service was good and room was clean and warm.

Review 84:having to leave

Review 85:everything. booked a deal on the internet without knowing anything about the place and had a great 2 nights. would certainly go back again and recommend The Gables to anyone. Food was fantastic.

Review 86:Myself and my partner stayed here on the 3/10/14 for a wedding. I was a wedding guest and also doing the bridal party's hair and make up. Soon as we checked in we noticed the noise coming from downstairs, Room 3 situated above the bar area. We asked reception to move around 4pm that day and was told we couldn't until the next day. So After a bland and cold 3 course meal we decided to go to bed and get an early night. It got to 11pm and the music was so loud and could hear people conversations. I called down to reception about 11:30. Nothing was resolved. My partner then went down to reception at 1pm! Still NO sleep! To find people still partying even tho bar shuts at 12pm. I appreciate it's a wedding hotel but don't rent out rooms for over £100 a night with that volume of noise. After hearing the taxi pull up around 1:45 am to collect the guests who weren't even staying at the gables was the icing on the cake, or so we thought. After finally settling to sleep around 2:30AM I woke my husband at 6am to the sound of water leaking through our ceiling. Dirty brown water everywhere. Just missing out wedding outfits hanging. Thank goodness. My husband went down to reception at 6 and was told what do you except me to do about it now, it's raining and dark. Upon check out we we're told the manger would be in touch to discuss a refund. All I recieved was an email offering me a 50% voucher for a return stay. Laughable. I read every review so if your reading this don't do it! Book the smiths or the anvil even had friends stay at hunters lodge. Anything is better then the mental touture of this hotel.

Review 87:The noise in corridors from wedding parties

Review 88:Newspapers at breakfast Pot of nice coffee Staff and customer service Cleanliness The building The food

Review 89:our room was located above reception & also there seemed to be quite a lot of noise from heating system outside. I feel the cleanliness needs a little more attention especially in bathroom around base of sinks, tiles above sink & edges of floor & room was quite small. It was our first time visiting & as it was for a wedding i felt it was very impersonal as locals & other guests were in same area as wedding party. I felt that with this in mind it was expensive . regards Mrs A Gillespie

Review 90:staff were very helpful & welcoming, the hotel was well located as we were visiting for a wedding at Anvill Hall, I found everyone helpful & though i have stated a few dis likes i would recommend to others, stating my opinions. regards Mrs A Gillespie

Review 91:Couldn't connect to wifi but we never asked or complained so not really a complaint.

Review 92:Staff were very friendly and helpful, room was clean and elegant, gardens were beautiful, dinner and breakfast was superb

Review 93:Wi Fi in room was weak. Slightly out of village centre.

Review 94:Staff, accommodating cheerful and helpful. Room was as you would expect, clean and with the normal facilities. Wedding nights were lively.

Review 95:We stayed there to see whether or not to hold our wedding reception there . Unfortunately we overheard a wedding party complaining about lack of attention which put us off. The bar staff were very young and I think lacked the experience in hospitality . The food (scampi for me and steak for other half) was nice but nothing to get exited about. The room was a good size but the bed was hard I found it difficult to get any comfort or sleep however my partner liked the bed. The hotel and grounds are very pleasant and yes I'd reccomend it but it just wasn't for me .

Review 96:The breakfast was poor, the help yourself toast, cereals and fruit juice was great, but the hot food was terrible. Everything on the plate was under cooked. It seemed that the breakfast was rushed.

Review 97:The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was nice, the bed was big and comfortable.

Review 98:We booked a classic double room and ended up in family room with extra bunk beds, so consquently there were children stayin in that part of the hotel. The other problem was the extractor fan from the next room constantly left running and the guest going out leaving it on. We were only there for two nights and the first night it was running from from when we returned to our room at 9:30pm until almost 2 in the morning. The next night it was running from 5:30 pm, we kept popping back to the room and it was still running until about 9:30 pm. the staff did offer us the room opposite to sleep in but when we went there, there were two young wedding guests shouting and screaming about what drinks they were going to drink next. We went back to our original room and luckily the fan did not go back on umtil 7:30 am Sunday morning

Review 99:The staff were extememly pleasant and helpful, they tried to solve the issue we had with our room but with little success. I would stay again so long as the room is the one I booked

Review 100:Weddings are constant and loud. Room had hotel sign lights outside which got through top of curtain. Contradicting information from one staff to another.

Review 101:Facilities are nice. Rooms are clean. Staff are friendly.

Review 102:Builders had failed to leave the hot water system working so there was not hot water in the morning. Acceptable mistake but no apology from management or offer of reduction on bill. Paid for shower or bath but unable to use.

Review 103:The staff were lovely and hotel very clean and easy location to access from M74. Pub prices at the bar with a lovely outside area was a bonus. Good breakfast served by good staff

Review 104:The room, on this occasion, smelt very musty and stale. We did not complain because we were only there for the one night.

Review 105:This was our second visit. Somehow this visit did not turn out to be as good as the first. Ordered evening Bar meal at reception and at 8pm bar staff did not know anything about it. Apparently, according to bar staff, food should be ordered at the bar, but on arrival we were kind of hassled about ordering food there and then, because receptionist said they were very busy that day. However bar staff organised our food, and on inspection, the restaurant and bar were far far from being busy

Review 106:From our experience there was nothing to dislike.

Review 107:Good friendly staff, comfortable surroundings, good choice at breakfast.Evening meal menu good at reasonable price.

Review 108:The way from the reception to the room was a truly labyrinth trough hundred corridors stairs up and down. Little noisy at nights as we could hear the guests in the next room every time they take a shower so I think the rooms are not properly isolated regrading noise Upon our arrival the receptionist, a brunette young girl, was correct but didn't give us a warm welcoming.

Review 109:Comfortable and clean room, tea/coffee facilities, TV, wifi, good breakfast Kind staff at the restaurant, specially Sarah

Review 110:We attended our friends wedding

Review 111:The noise from the c is ren filling from room above us it took five minutes

Review 112:The hotel was very clean , rooms were tidy and the staff were very polite

Review 113:Great stopping off point. Lovely rooms great food. Will be back!

Review 114:Lovely location. Great room and amazing breakfast

Review 115:Everything was spot on! A fantastic room and really nice staff.

Review 116:Not a lot of staff on duty, had to keep looking for someone when needed serving.

Review 117:A nice pint of beer, comfortable bed.

Review 118:Lovely warm clean rooms. Staff wonderful.

Review 119:Beds were uncomfortable and the bar staff kept disappearing so took a while to order anything

Review 120:Lovely little place and nothing was too much trouble for the staff - outstanding service.

Review 121:Great location, welcoming staff, well kept public rooms, comfortable bedroom, high standard of housekeeping and great food.

Review 122:Very comfortable room which had bath as well as shower

Review 123:Food was very good and staff very friendly

Review 124:We enjoyed the day and this is the second time we have been ti this hotel and will return soon.

Review 125:Barman provided menus for evening meal then disappeared. So left to find meal elsewhere.

Review 126:too slow serving breakfast

Review 127:location handy off motorway
