Reviews for The Royal Hotel

Review 1:The rooms are large, clean and comfortable. The latest renovations have improved the hotel enormously, fresh coffee instead of instant. Would definitely go back!

Review 2:Poor quality place that specialises in functions. Room renovations in progress, but even the new rooms are basic like a budget chain, public area carpets are very dirty, even new room carpet was very stained. Uncomfortable old bed. Tv too high up on the wall, watching was uncomfortable, staff offhand and i had to make my own bed as my request for sheets and blankets had not been honoured initially. Poor breakfast choices, microwaved hot choice was awful.

Review 3:Nothing

Review 4:Would prefer a softer mattress but they are not unbearable. A lift would be good for carrying bags upstairs but overall no complaints.

Review 5:The friendly, helpful staff. The hotel itself with the old style bar & modern restaurant. Food is excellent!!

Review 6:We stayed in room 260, a premium twin. The rooms was very nice however the single bed by the window had a really old and lumpy mattress, everytime my daughter turned over the springs (pinged) - she ended up sleeping ontop of the duvet with the large towels from the bedroom over her for warmth.

Review 7:The staff were fantastic, the hotel looked newly renovated, the decor was very nice, and the location was perfect.

Review 8:The only thing i didn't like was the shower and the hair that was in it when we arrived... The shower could do with an upgrade and the water pressure was poor. For the money that was paid this should of been alot better.

Review 9:Just a small comment waitresses had a serving cloths hung over their shoulder, this is not good practise, their hair is touching the serving cloth then they are carrying your plate with it.

Review 10:Warm welcome from the staff and lovely food

Review 11:staff attitude was very poor. we made a mistake on our booking by booking two executive rooms but with only one occupant. the staff member at reception made a song and dance about it until it got to the point when I had to say to her, does it make any difference to the booking or room availability at which point she said no!!. Then at check out the following morning the second staff member did the same. We wouldn't go back purely because of the rudeness. They both need lessons in customer service.

Review 12:room was clean and tidy. bed very comfortable

Review 13:Spacious comfortable room, good facilities in hotel and excellent food. Close to beach. Much of hotel appears to have been recently refurbished to a good standard and in our opinion is very good value for money. Will definitely be going back soon.

Review 14:First impression not brilliant as people outside front door smoking & the paintwork on door was awful (as on other internal doors) Gave a bad impression-sack the decorator! We had requested bath but only had shower which was not non slip so an awful mat provided-not good. Wash basin badly situated so elbows bumped on wall & hit head on shelf! No towel rail near basin & no hooks at all. Think the same person who designed the bathroom did the painting perhaps? Lack of information in room re meals & facilities & there wasn't always anyone about to ask. We were surprised at the number of stairs to get to our room & feel this is not made clear on website. We ate in restaurant one night & the menu hasn't changed at all since we ate there several years ago. Time for an update as we didn't see many other residents eating there either.

Review 15:Spacious room although bland decor. Tea/coffee facilities & excellent biscuits. Breakfast ok but better when not buffet as toast was edible when served fresh & not kept warm. Well situated for local area.

Review 16:Nothing.

Review 17:Overall value for money. Comfortable and clean room.friendly staff, excellent evening food and a hearty breakfast.this was our sixth visit and a seventh will be next year.

Review 18:Plastic cover on mattress but I realise it's inevitable for hygiene reasons!

Review 19:Good bar and entertainment. Friendly welcome and relaxed environment.

Review 20:The shower room, It requires a very big look at. Grouting in the shower was yellow. Room 252.

Review 21:The staff apart for the front desk were excellent. We were greeted very well but on departure we were not asked one question about our stay.

Review 22:Our room was in need of redecoration - radiator was chipped, grout in shower needed replacing, carpet in hallway also needed replacing.

Review 23:Lovely, friendly staff. Excellent food. Great location for exploring North Norfolk.

Review 24:There's really nothing that we didn't like, so difficult to say, As others have said there is no lift, but we weren't expecting one.

Review 25:Staff really friendly & welcoming. Everywhere was clean & tidy. Excellent food and plenty of it.

Review 26:Room (263) was about as far as it could be from Reception. As we had booked well ahead I would have expected a less remote room, or to have been consulted about its location in the hotel.

Review 27:Comfy room and bed and nice hot water and good breakfast

Review 28:1. left hotel at 10am and room had still not been cleaned when we returned at 4pm 2. Had to wait at reception too long on occasions due to nobody there.

Review 29:location, friendly service and comfortable room

Review 30:We booked a Royal Suite because we have a small child and wanted a separate seating area for when he was asleep. When we queried our room allocation we were told that a Royal Suite is not a suite it is a room that has been refurbished and that the Booking.com description is a generic one. We were given an undrinkable bottle of wine as 'compensation'. They couldn't move us to one of the actual suites because the hotel was full (despite the rooms still being available on booking.com). In the hotel industry, suite means suite. Go ahead and charge more for the refurbished rooms but call it a superior/deluxe/refurbished double like everyone else does and you won't have disappointed customers. Also the sound insulation is appalling - we had to listen to the game show the people downstairs wanted to watch at 11:30pm.

Review 31:Perfectly nice hotel - some areas a bit drab and old fashioned, some have been very nicely updated. Nice location near the beach.

Review 32:Being Saturday night, the music in the bars filled the bedroom untilquite lateRooms furbished to a high standard

Review 33:Dinner first class, portions enormous.

Review 34:Style of rooms and how the old place got turned into a newly renovated hotel; overly modernistic and Novotel standard so missing somewhat the traditional Norfolk Inn style; but that is certainly a matter of personal preference

Review 35:Super clean and newly renovated room with new bath; TV etc.

Review 36:Pictures on web-site, did not reflect rooms at all. Very basic, carpets in corridors very badly stained. Breakfast poor quality, not even fresh toast. Canteen style buffet. WiFi almost non-existent.

Review 37:Poor room - very old fashioned. No details about the hotel facilities. Narrow stairs to rooms and no lift. Bar didn't look anything on web photos

Review 38:New bathroom, good cleanliness, excellent breakfast,

Review 39:Reason for return was Stayed 2 yrs ago and was welcomed withcomplimentary upgrade .Large bed slightly on hard side, better quality pillows would add to comfort stains on bed runner.lacks bathroom adequate but small in comparison for room Booked for two nights first night arrived back at room about 10 pm to have noise in corridor and room went down at midnight to complain owner came up couldn't say what it was eventually stopped at 1.00am Second night Sunday returned about 9 pm wedding party going on Room 257 is above the outside bar area voices and music playing. Went to complain 10.30 no other room was available for us to move to, but booking. Com still had vacancies music was turned down slightly . Complained on checking out so did another couple had we been told there was a wedding taking place on checking in we would of at least been pre warned or not stayed another night We was just told people have to enjoy them selves offered no kind of reduction for two nights lack of sleep.

Review 40:This time not a lot

Review 41:We had booked for 2 nights in August 2015, however, we couldn't face staying for the second night. The nightly entertainment finished some time after midnight, but the noise kept on until gone 01:00. On it's own we could have handled that, but then we went down for breakfast where the experience plumetted. A four star hotel does not have coffee sachets for you to brew your own, nor does it have cheap fried ingredients left to stew in an excess of fat. A buffet breakfast is highly acceptable, but it does not excuse poor quality, and is it really that hard to serve hot freshly brewed coffee to each table as guests arrive?

Review 42:The location was spot on, the car park was massive, and the beer was good.

Review 43:Instant coffee at breakfast instead of real. Television reception limited - no BBC channels and no radio channels. No shower - just shower head for sit in bath.

Review 44:Really friendly staff, excellent location, refurbished facilities, good dinner, easy wifi, very comfortable.

Review 45:not the hotel's fault, but no pavements nearby, due to the narrowness of the streets! ... so walking anywhere was on the road, even to the beach. Which was lovely, by the way.

Review 46:lovely room, terrific bed, nice pub-atmosphere

Review 47:I know dogs are allowed. Not sure whether they have certain rooms for dog owners. Also one visitor let their dog lie on the arm of a leather sofa in reception area which I think is out of order.

Review 48:The location was good

Review 49:The food in the restaurant in the evening wasn't the best at 1st, but was sorted after a complaint but apart from that it was good. The breakfast is great tho!

Review 50:The location is the best part about this hotel, it's just minutes on foot away from the beach. The rooms are clean and well kept.

Review 51:I have stayed here before and really enjoyed my stay. This time though the bed was aweful. Advertised as a superior double but was two single beds put together. Rock hard mattresses and me and my girlfriend had a terrible nights sleep. Room was clean, but looked tatty, old and worn. Wasn't impressed this time with the room. Very basic room for the high price tag.

Review 52:The location was spot on. Five minutes walk and your on beach. Big car park and 20 minutes drive from Cromer. Very nice breakfast.

Review 53:Although we were in one of the refurbished rooms, the light pull in the bathroom was just a piece of string (no toggle), there was a distinct lack of shelving and the water pressure was really low. The breakfast was extremely poor and even though we were not down late, appeared to have been there some time. The sausages were of especially poor quality and lacked any flavour.

Review 54:Staff were friendly and helpful, providing a fan when asked.

Review 55:Problem resolved after discussion with manager child bed not available in parent room but upgraded So good result staff very kind and apologetic

Review 56:Good location great staff very helpful handy to have restaurant on site

Review 57:The staff were really friendly and helpful. The location was perfect and just round the corner to a beautiful coastline with fantastic walks as well as a quaint and friendly small town/village. We had our dog with us and they were a very dog friendly hotel. Definitely go again.

Review 58:Not very welcoming. Food quality poor Refurbishment works going on Breakfast buffet Seems to prioritise business before guests no facilities not 4 star

Review 59:Close to beach.

Review 60:Not applicable!

Review 61:We loved how welcoming the staff were, the hotel is gradually being refurbed and you can see how a high a standard it is going to be. The completed areas are lovely! As a parent with a young child going away can be stressful, but the hotel and it's staff have been brilliant.- In fact we are considering going again!

Review 62:Lighting in the room was inadequate and not well placed. The hotel could do with a lift (elevator) to assist those of us less able to easily manage stairs. The walk up the stairs followed by a long trot to the room was not very convenient.

Review 63:Good location, and we liked the hotel's "RH coffee shop". Meals were very nice and provided a good selection, reasonably priced. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return without hesitation. We look forward to visiting again when all the onsite renovations are complete.

Review 64:Building work going on in the hotel . The fire alarm went off twice in the night , when we asked we were told it was someone having a shower? No apology on booking out of the hotel . Breakfast was terrible , scrambled eggs were very pale and you could see the milk leaking from the eggs. So tried a fried egg and that was raw on the top. Sausages tasted very cheap. . Worst breakfast ever .

Review 65:Position of hotel and comfortable bed.

Review 66:The bathroom was badly designed...the sink was too close to wall and the shower cubicle was very small ( and we are not large!). Also needed some shelving away from the sink.

Review 67:Lovely big room and large comfortable bed. Nice white soft towels. Excellent carvery and nice bar area with friendly staff...good location for beach and other eating places.

Review 68:The buffet breakfast was fine but would have been much better if 'proper' coffee had been available instead of the same coffee sachets that were available in our room. I don't think it would be too difficult to provide a filter-coffee machine or something similar.

Review 69:Nice, quiet hotel close to the sea. Plenty of parking. Comfortable room with everything we needed.

Review 70:No lift. You need to be fit to carry a case to the top floor, but help was offered without my asking.

Review 71:The room and bathroom were beautifully clean. Tea, coffee and towels replenished every day. Breakfast well cooked and generous. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 72:Crab salad - crab very chilled and so water on the plate. Salad not well presented and not very good. Instant coffee for breakfast. Fruit in bowl wet and nectarines hard. Some staff really helpful and pleasant others not quite so.

Review 73:Fresh clean rooms and towels. Convenient to walks and town and the venue we were visiting each day. South Repps.

Review 74:We were upgraded to a Ex suite but the bed was uncomfortable. The sink in the bathroom was a small corner one suitable only for a downstais loo.Nowhere in the bathroom to put washing items .

Review 75:Stayed here before and liked the hotel and the area

Review 76:The bed in room 251 was flat one side , but very lumpy & leaning on its side so felt like u was falling out of bed.

Review 77:The roast carvery was very nice

Review 78:Nothing to dislike!

Review 79:The bedrooms are great (we had an executive) with excellent bathing facilities, huge bed, wi-fi in the room and a tv. Downstairs the dining facilities have been improved over the years and the food is great. The beer is well kept, a good selection and the bar and the adjoining rooms are comfortable.

Review 80:Very uncomfortable bed. Could feel the springs. Room very small and we travelled with a small baby so this made it a little difficult.

Review 81:Staff were all so friendly and welcoming. Dinner was excellent

Review 82:The hotel was in the process of being redecorated and we had one of the recently refurbished rooms so everything was shiny and new. However, unfortunately, there were already stains on the new carpet. Once the building work is complete the carpets need to be shampoo-ed.

Review 83:All the staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was a good size and the bed was enormous. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet and the tea, coffee and posh biscuits in our room. The Wednesday night carvery was very good value.

Review 84:No nets or frosted windows in the bathroom or bedroom so had to pull the blind down or people on the car park could see us sitting on the toilet or getting ready to go out.. on top floor with no lift..No fan or air con in the room.. bed slopes..room was meant to be a executive suite but no better than a premier inn.. definitely not worth over a hundred quid.No telephone in the room to contact reception.

Review 85:Location was lovely and the breakfast was spot on.. was also clean

Review 86:The room hadn't been checked as no doors between bedroom/dressing room and bathroom. They did change room for a similar quality immediately

Review 87:Handy for large beach. A quiet location

Review 88:our room was above a smoking area and if you opened the windows your room smelled of smoke

Review 89:the hotel and room was very nice, the staff were very helpful and polite, we enjoyed our meals very much! will be staying here again

Review 90:Hotel from outside didn't look much but once inside.. Lovely. You can see they are doing the place up. No lifts. Breakfast was a disappointment after such a yummy evening meal. Had to wait for foods to be replenished.. Hadn't catered for us all.

Review 91:Evening meal in the restaurant was very yummy. Would recommend a meal there. Staff were professional and very friendly. Executive double room was newly decorated and stunning. Very comfy 4 poster bed. Great nights sleep and powerful rain shower in a stunning bathroom.

Review 92:We did not enjoy our dinner in the restaurant, we thought the food we had was mediocre it sounded much better on the specials board and was over priced. It was just a chicken breast in tomato sauce with chips hardly any bacon or cheese topping served in a pasta bowl! The menu said topped generously! The starter was only olives and pitta bread with dips and very basic, I have had better from Tesco. Dessert was fine but all in all I would have enjoyed fish and chips more at the sea front and for £43 it was very basic and not what I would have expected. we wished we had just had the carvery because at least you could see what you were going to get.

Review 93:peaceful environment and being able to stay until 11am on day of departure which meant a lay-in after a night out.

Review 94:No bad experiences but perhaps the restaurant sometimes overdoes the quantity to compensate for lack of finesse. (loads of chips but tasted like re fried chippy chips) a few fresh chunky chips would have been better.

Review 95:No one thing but overall an OK place to stay for a night. Great gammon steak

Review 96:Basically everything! We stayed here on a two night break with a group of friends. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. Rooms were extremely comfortable and clean. Ample free parking. Bar area very cosy with live music. Location was perfect for discovering the North Norfolk coastline. Wonderful breakfast with a great selection of hot and cold food. Enjoyed our stay so much we've booked again for August bank holiday weekend! Looking forward to trying the newly refurbed restaurant.

Review 97:I was given a very undercooked poached egg at breakfast (runny white)& then had stomach issues ( you know what I mean ) for the rest of the day. I got an empty "sorry about that" from the waiter & reception & an attempt to overcharge me for an extra dinner the previous evening. Left a bad taste! Some staff & customer liaison issues here.

Review 98:I was made very welcome & the position of the hotel is less then 5mins from the lovely beach. The room was comfortable & clean. Dinner was tasty - fish n chips.

Review 99:The fire exit sign in the room which was lit up all night ok if you like the lights on when sleeping.. Breakfast. You know when it was coming from the ping ping of the microwave.. And if I was going to be really really picky the pillows were to soft for us.....

Review 100:Clean fresh room .quite and friendly staff. Overall quite a nice place to stay.....

Review 101:bedroom carpet badly stained in what was supposed to be an upgrade I believe that we were in a pet room as next room had a dog breakfast v poor

Review 102:goodtv

Review 103:We stayed in one of the refurbished rooms with a four poster. Comfortable large bed. Great food and a good freehouse with a good range of beers and spirits. Very friendly staff.

Review 104:The only cash machine in the village charges so beware.

Review 105:Mundesley is a great base to explore the east coast of Norfolk and the quiet villages. It retains its old world charm without the cosmetic gloss of the North coast which is just too polished to feel authentically local. The Royal has good food and makes a great base for exploring. Do visit East Ruston Vicarage Gardens which are world class.

Review 106:Lots of stairs -no lift! No hooks on back of bathroom door. And no light in cupboard. Breakfast ok - not much choice for cooked breakfast , no fish!! Sausages not very nice. Evening Carvery vegetables not cooked properly!

Review 107:Clean and tidy! Being refurbished so some areas a bit shabby. Ladies loo magnificent! Staff friendly and helpful. A few minutes walk from a dog friendly nice beach!

Review 108:noisy extractor fans all night from various parts of the building

Review 109:nicely presented room, access to village ,quiet road, great pub downstairs with good food, staff friendly and helpful

Review 110:The location as it was just moments from the beach. The staff were all so warm and welcoming. Our room was spacious, very clean and the bathrooms looked brand new.

Review 111:the only downside was that we travelled with two eldery ladies and there was not a lift to the second floo otherwise it was lovely

Review 112:locality cleanliness and staff

Review 113:Poor flowing shower situation of room which was above outside patio area very noisy on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Review 114:Lovely breakfast very comfy bed staff very helpful.

Review 115:Check-in was specified as 1pm, but when we arrived at 1.45pm, we were told we'd have to wait as the room wasn't ready. Ironic, considering when I looked they'd demanded an extra £20 to let us check out at noon the next day, rather than 11am. (We declined!) We ordered a snack in the restaurant while waiting for our room to be readied and it was both cooked and served in a disappointingly perfunctory fashion. Suffice it to say, we ended up eating our evening meal in the village's other hotel, The Ship, which was excellent. In general, the staff were all rather offhand and slightly surly. The room aside, the general decor and state of the hotel was shoddy and rundown and our room was a long way from reception - up two flights of stairs and along several corridors.

Review 116:The room had clearly been recently renovated and was nicely-decorated, well appointed and comfortable.

Review 117:I feel like I'm being pedantic just finding something, but the standby light on the TV lights up the whole room in some of them. I unplugged it, so wasn't a real issue.

Review 118:Obviously a matter of taste, but I always find teh beds really comfortable and have a great night's sleep. The food is really good, without being obnoxious. Mostly traditional, but done very well. The staff couldn't be more accomodating.

Review 119:The restaurant was being refurbed, therfore not open, general building works going on, not advised at time of booking. Sunday breakfast 8-9.30 only, not long enough for a lazy sunday

Review 120:Location good, plenty of parking

Review 121:Could not complain about anything.

Review 122:The fact that it was a family run hotel, everyone was very friendly, and helpful. The food was to die for, good portions, especially the dessert's.

Review 123:Had superior room 261 bed was the worst one I've ever slept in.

Review 124:Staff very polite and helpful, cleanest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Breakfast was great lots to chose from

Review 125:Disappointed with small shower. The hairdryer cord too short and a very difficult button to keep pressed to make it work!

Review 126:Very good breakfast chef - really enjoyed the eggs and bacon!

Review 127:The breakfast was disappointing - scrambled egg was fairly tasteless and the coffee was sachets of Nescafé and little cartons of long life milk, despite a coffee machine being available at dinner the night before. Yoghurt from the fridge was covered in mould.

Review 128:The room was a good size and the bed was very comfortable. Room rates were reasonable and unlike most b&bs in the area, we were able to book in for a single night.

Review 129:The whole stay from start to finish was perfect. The welcome was friendly, the staff were so chatty and the Hotel itself even despite being rennovated currently was spot on. The Food was scrummy. No bad Points to this Hotel at all.

Review 130:No smoke alarm in room exposed wires as looked to be installing. Breakfast was adequate but felt could have used better quality ingriedients

Review 131:great location can see changes in hotel since last visit, will be lovely once completed. Bar staff friendly

Review 132:My only complaint was the restaurant area for breakfast was a bit dated and too much going on on the tables over loaded.

Review 133:Room were very nice staff pleasant and very helpful.

Review 134:Shame tea and coffee were not served to our table at breakfast, it was self service the same as in our rooms. I was looking forwards to a real coffee at breakfast setting me up for a long drive that morning....

Review 135:Cooked Breakfast was good, set us up for the day. Lovely cotton bed linen. Evening meal was very good value.

Review 136:Can't find fault.

Review 137:Always a pleasure to stay at the Royal. Even though they are still refurbishing the hotel, a lot has been done and the rooms are fab. Great big bath and warm, comfortable beds and pillows. Staff friendly and helpful. Food excellent. Nothing to fault here.

Review 138:Carpet in room was badly stained. King bed was really two singles pushed together with King sheets.

Review 139:Location was great and hotel was in the process of refurbishing so is trying to update. Great breakfast!

Review 140:the occupier of the room next door's television had a concert on the TV in the early hours of the morning, although we phoned the Hotel Manager ( who the next day told us that he did come along to check this after we phoned their number) when we raised this issue at checkout his response was they probably had too much to drink & fell asleep with the TV on! Dirty marks on carpet in room, refurbishment will need doing again if it ever gets finished!

Review 141:Breakfast was good & plenty of choice.
