Reviews for Half Moon by Marston's Inns
Review 1:The breakfast was pretty bad, the second day we went out to avoid the breakfast. Perhaps avoid the Full English and just go for eggs on toast.
Review 2:Location is a complete win and the staff are really friendly. Easy to book and easy to come and go.
Review 3:Maybe the carpet in our room could do with a New Year shampoo!
Review 4:The staff at the Half Moon are great! It's an easy going place to stay in the heart of beautiful Sherborne - we needed to be near the Abbey for a wedding and you are 2 minutes from the Abbey. The staff did all they could to keep us happy - making delicious sandwiches for example when we had no time to sit down and eat in the restaurant, and making sure we were helped on late arrival when the bar was crazily busy at night.
Review 5:Breakfast was well below the standard for the price of the room. Not what I would expect from a leading chain hotel
Review 6:Room was excellent clean tidy and warm. Shower hot and had a good flow rate.
Review 7:The bar was severely understaffed. The few who were on worked very hard.
Review 8:The friendliness and the variation of shops, pubs and eating places for such a small place.
Review 9:It is noisy especially at the weekend. We had a big room but I think it could be decorated / furnished with a bit more style / character.
Review 10:Great location
Review 11:Cold frosty night outside and central heating rads in room not up to keeping night temp reasonable.
Review 12:Good quiet room. Had a good evening meal of sirloin steak chips and mushrooms. Breakfast fine too. Staff friendly and efficient.Well placed to view the abbey, quirky shops and good restaurants. Good base for Dorset/Somerset tours.
Review 13:The warm greeting from Reception Staff and and the way in which all staff made me feel at home. The high standard of meals (dinner/breakfast) The comfortable bed and high standard of furnishinga and decor
Review 14:Room was quite cold. Windows were open when I arrived late at night, and the room smelled as if someone had been smoking in there.
Review 15:Very good breakfast.
Review 16:Got up the second morning and the only option in the bathroom was cold water. Luckily the weather was gentle so I survived the shower. Can happen.
Review 17:Adjacent to Sherborne Abbey and a block away from the train station. Well maintained establishment. Lots of local patrons in the pub on the ground floor which says a lot. Friendly staff. Food ok.
Review 18:The room had not been cleaned very well and the bed creaked a little and was not particularly comfortable. Breakfast was adequate without being exciting!
Review 19:The location. I was singing in the Abbey just across the road and so access was perfect. The room size was good and the bathroom even better having been recently refurbished. Unfortunately the shine was taken off because the cold tap on the basin didn't work!
Review 20:The room (number three) was large with an excellent en-suite bathroom. Friendly folk in the bar/restaurant. Good breakfast choice and plenty of free parking.
Review 21:Bedside lamps not working in room. Needs a little TLC all round. Towel rail and shelf units broken in bathroom. Window did not open Cobwebs all round in room
Review 22:Bar meals were good Nice towels
Review 23:Our room at the front of the property overlooked the outside area of the bar which was open until midnight
Review 24:Location by Cheap Street and The Abbey Our room was a good size as was the en-suite bathroom. The room had all the facilities you would normally. Breakfast was served in the restauarnt area and the hot food was cooked to order
Review 25:It was a good experience. Internet connection was a bit patchy though.
Review 26:The location was excellent for where I needed to be the next morning. The staff were helpful and I was able to park until my business was concluded.
Review 27:I only lowered my score on cleanliness 'cos the shelf above the basin had been forgotten.
Review 28:Evening meal delicious. I was afraid, as an elderly singleton, of raucous pub, but it was very nice and my bedroom very quiet.
Review 29:Light Switch in Room broken, (repaired on 2nd day. Toilet cistern not working properly, again repaired quickly. Breakfast a bit hit and miss. Expensive for type of accomodation. Would not use again except as last resort.
Review 30:Very good central location
Review 31:Although I really don't think this can be improved, the stairs were a little steep. The seats in the bar and lounge, though, were in the bar and lounge definitely way below the standard I would have expected and of no credit to the company whatsoever.
Review 32:The staff, the room, quality of the food and drink were excellent.
Review 33:No complaints, all good.
Review 34:Friendly and very helpful staff. Myself and son were go-karting at Clay Pigeon the next day in a national competition. This hotel was great, good food, nice restaurant and very reasonable rate. It must've been good as my son won his endurance race the next day!
Review 35:Nothing really, very good value and right in the centre with shops, restaurants etc only a short walk.
Review 36:Lovely place, old coaching inn with great staff and good food. My room was comfortable, clean and well presented. The pub also provides good food and ale at very reasonable prices. Overall excellent value for money!
Review 37:- Reminants of crisps in one of the beds - TV did not work in one of the rooms - Toilet did not flush - No Hot water in one of the rooms - Hot water tap broken in one of the rooms
Review 38:Very noisy pub until late, couldn't sleep. Then had delivery of barrells at 7am which work us both up. Room old and tired, walls dirty, wardrobe door wouldn't open, overall would benefit from a whole refit.
Review 39:Good location, central in heart of town
Review 40:You're staying in a popular pub so there is noise (and morning beer delivery! ) decor is a bit tired.
Review 41:Extremely friendly and helpful staff. all very straightforward and comfortable
Review 42:Breakfast very impersonal, I learnt to ask for a second piece of toast. Vegetarians would not like the way that rooms are decorated with the chain's menus propped up around the rooms, -- featuring graphic photos of lumps of meat from various animals. I am not vegetarian, but was surprised that the chain thinks this is appropriate in bedrooms.
Review 43:Pretty good for a chain hotel. Was offered help with my luggage upstairs, didn't have to ask. I love church bells, so deliberately put myself there, right under the Abbey, guests who don't like can ask for a room facing a dull carpark at the back.
Review 44:Excellent central location in this particularly lovely Dorset town. Pleasant, helpful staff. Very spacious and comfortable enough rooms (if in perhaps a slightly old-fashioned way!) Beds nice and firm and all rooms were clean and as described online.
Review 45:When you are trying to get to sleep the main door kept Slaming every time it was used and shook the room. The breakfast I can only describe as cremated the mushrooms were like rabbit droppings and toast was like sandpaper. I love this when you pay £93.00 for 1night,great value for money!!?
Review 46:Spacious room
Review 47:Room was at the front of the building.Outside drinking area(approx 10 tables) right underneath bedroom, very noisy until 11.45 pm.slight traffic noise too.Breakfast area is next to the adjoining bar area which was being hoovered(at 9.30 am)consequently a conversation with family was impossible at breakfast
Review 48:Very well equipted room.Very good breakfast.
Review 49:Essentially a pub with some rooms, so staff not great at dealing with check ins. Cleaning could have been more thorough
Review 50:Great location in central Sherborne
Review 51:You may hear pub and terrace in a summer evening if you (or your children) want to sleep early.
Review 52:Very friendly and helpful people, prime location within Sherborne, traditional pub with local ales and good food, excellent English breakfast, rooms nice and big.
Review 53:Although the Half Moon is in such a perfect location and deserves to do well, it is in desperate need of updating and renovation. The furnishings and carpets in the main pub area are particularly shabby and dirty. If we hadn't been so tired we would have found another local restaurant.
Review 54:Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the young lady at the reception desk when we arrived. Also the location couldn't be better as we were only staying overnight en route so needed somewhere central with parking.
Review 55:Pretty basic -- but in the nature of "rooms over a pub". TV didn't work (no signal).
Review 56:Good location in centre of Sherborne. Reasonably priced for the offering.
Review 57:Noise from the bar and pub garden in front of hotel until late. Shouting, singing & swearing prevented me sleeping until very late. Windows couldn't be closed. Loud and prolonged wearing from kitchen during breakfast. Noisy cleaning and vacuuming and staff 'banter' from adjacent bar during breakfast. You are essentially eating in the bar. Would have liked toast with breakfast. Was not offered & staff absent. Toast not served to anybody although butter and marmalade was provided. Place seems to be run by a bunch of teenagers with no idea. Not suitable if you want a quiet break!
Review 58:Very central. Close to school. Lots of very hot water. Parking.
Review 59:Constant noise - this is a town centre pub with rooms and I have neverstayed in such a noisy place. The staff did warn me beforehand but it istoo late once you have booked! The room I had (room 01) was basic with a badly marked carpet. The double bed was one that pulled down from the wall (very bed-sit). Just too noisy to be comfortable. Possibly OK for one night but unbearable really for any longer.
Review 60:Staff are very friendly and the town itself is beautiful
Review 61:Noisy fan outside our window, also there was a lot of clattering of plates etc from the kitchen. lots of noise from pub customers but that's what you get when you book a room in a pub so that's ok.
Review 62:Convenience of location, friendly staff and a good breakfast.
Review 63:Very noisy front of building room above outside seating area for the pub. Church clock opposite chimed every quarter of an hour right through the night so one way or another not a very good nights sleep.
Review 64:Not a lot.
Review 65:The rooms at the front were very noisy due to people sitting outside the pub till early hours. There is no door on the stairs to the first floor to stop the noise from the pub carrying. Ask for a room at the back, on the second floor and you will be fine!
Review 66:Comfy beds, clean rooms, good breakfast.
Review 67:On arrival I was initially taken aback by the state of the carpet in the bar. It wasn't just soiled it was shiny with grime. Really time to change it or go for a floor covering more suited to the amount of spillages and foot traffic that you have. Something that can be mopped. On check in the staff member breezily told me that my room (7) was front facing and she hoped the noise from the people in the outside seating wouldn't be too bad but "it should die down after 12.30 am" The ironing board that I sent for had a damaged leg and when I opened it the leg fell off. I called the Inn from my room and a man came up with another which he erected himself. said "does ironing do this to you then"? Implying I had broken the leg myself. He turned out to be the manager. The iron had a frayed lead where there was a bad kink on the cord exposing the three wires. None were broken right through to the copper but only a matter of time. When I showed this to the room attendant she said "its been like that for months and we haven't had any other complaints". On my return after dinner the TV remote did not work. I called the inn again from my mobile and someone came up with new batteries. There was only one ceiling light in the room with a small over the bed light - not really enough especially in winter when it will be dark early. In the morning the signal was not working on the TV. Room attendant came up and said "Its knackered". I went for breakfast and ordered tea, which came with no milk jug, so went to the buffet to use the jug there. This was so curdled I thought it was some kind of liquid live yoghurt for pouring on muesli. Milk finally came but tea was so strong as made with two bags in a tiny pot, I asked for and got another pot. I had ordered the full English without beans or hash browns - this came but was also minus mushrooms which I had wanted. Didn't see a staff member to ask so went without.
Review 68:On arrival I asked for a jug of ice and an iron and board. They both arrived very quickly. No phone so had to use my own phone. The staff are extremely friendly and mean well but could do with a bit of training to deliver a better quality of service.
Review 69:Shower didn't work on arrival. Asked staff to fix the problem. Was told it had been fixed but the problem hadn't been resolved! Upgraded to suite, but the standard of the room was poor and not clean! Wouldn't stay here again
Review 70:The room décor was a little tired and could do with modernising but it didn't detract from our experience.
Review 71:The hotel is in an excellent location in the heart of Sherborne. Rooms were clean and quiet.
Review 72:Shampoo empty in shower/ bath Loo seat loose Needs a makeover - which, I understand, is planned
Review 73:Good food, mattresses & duvets Free parking
Review 74:The rooms are above the pub, so although noise wasn't a problem when I stayed, it could be on a busy night. You eat breakfast in the pub, which was being cleaned when I was eating mine. Breakfast was OK, but powdered scrambled eggs are not my favourite.
Review 75:The staff were very friendly, and keen to help.
Review 76:The visit was an overnight arrangement and to a tight timescale. When this was explained to the staff at The Half Moon they did all they could to accommodate our requests in respect of room availability on arrival. Although our visit did not allow time for doing tourist things we did think that Sherborne is a lovely town with everything in walking distance of The Half Moon Hotel.
Review 77:Fire exit was blocked and the overall fire safety could be improved. Not enough variety at breakfast. Maybe croissants and pain au chocolat etc
Review 78:The WIFI was very good and reliable which made working from my room very easy.
Review 79:Very slow service at breakfast on Monday. I think the wait-staff were busy unloading and storing beer and bottles which arrived at 7:30am. but they should have been serving breakfast instead.
Review 80:Liked the room, wasn't too noisy, liked the staff friendly and keen to help, liked the position central to the town.
Review 81:We found the climb with our luggage to the top floor quite difficult. The hot water didn't come on in the bathroom until well after 7am.
Review 82:We liked the view of the Abbey from our window. The beds were comfortable. The room was very clean
Review 83:Room and beds. Location. You could hear the sounds from the bar until it closed at midnight but it wasn't too loud and wasn't really a problem. Breakfast was OK but not great.
Review 84:The Abbey clock strikes the hours throughout the night so the hotel double glazing was essential to block it out as I'm a light sleeper
Review 85:The Half Moon is in the middle of historic Sherborne, with all the sights an easy walk away. The room was spacious and well appointed
Review 86:Only downside was one person who could not handle their drink decided to cause trouble outside the hotel at midnight.
Review 87:Staff where very friendly and helpful - nothing was a problem.
Review 88:Doors need to have their closers adjusted because they close with a bang. Bathtub was slippery for having a shower.
Review 89:Great location. Excellent breakfast included, lots of choices. Rooms were very good albeit a bit small but that's okay. Staff were helpful.
Review 90:Not suited to people with mobility problems. Cheap inner sprung mattress not suited to a good hotel
Review 91:Friendly and helpful staff and management. Good pub facility. Good food.
Review 92:A pet moan of mine is that this, and other hotels I have stayed in, insist on serving a solo traveller with a one pot cup of tea at breakfast. I need 3 cups to start the day and too often there is not a bigger pot available.
Review 93:The location was excellent and the food very good.
Review 94:Lovely friendly Inn right in the centre. Lovely atmosphere and would recommend definitely. Decent pub grub and good breakfast choices. Everything within walking. Enjoy.
Review 95:Nothing I thought it was great value for money.
Review 96:Ana the Manager made us feel really at home and nothing was too much trouble for her or her staff. Excellent customer service. Well done Ana.
Review 97:Even though there were 20+ people in the bar last orders called at 9.45 travelled nearly 300 miles to meet old friends and catch up, booked a room so I could have a few drinks, couldn't beleve they closed the bar so early.
Review 98:Good price. Clean. Comfortable. Good breakfast.
Review 99:bar closed early, last orders at 2200hrs.was in bar with 8 old comrades having drinks in memory of one who had passed on.for a hotel the bar should be open later..usualy not a problem for hotels elsewhere..lost revenue...few hundred quid went over that bar...
Review 100:good location.fit for purpose..
Review 101:-noise from pub -room was too hot & no way to control temp in room
Review 102:-good location -sizeable double room & good shower -good breakfast variety
Review 103:Very little........maybe some sound between rooms if people were noisy..... You need to enjoy the sound of the Abbey bells....
Review 104:Excellent telephone manner while booking even before we arrived ! On arrival , Anna ,the manager made us so very welcome....and is a perfect front of house representative for Marstons ! All the staff were extremely efficient and friendly ...it was obvious that there were many regulars enjoying the good surroundings....Although we were with local friends for dinner....breakfast was a joy ....the interiors were clean, comfortable ,warm + well furnished....
Review 105:The room was icy cold but probably because it was over the arch and a heater was in the cupboard which after the first night we decided to use.
Review 106:As Mother & daughter we appreciate when we can have a twin room. The room we had was quiet because it was facing the rear and so did not hear much of the pub crowd below.
Review 107:Rooms small, furniture big for room except beds. Heating out of control much too hot mid winter. Breakfast with the cleaners vacuuming!
Review 108:Location, easy parking, modern bathrooms plenty of hot water
Review 109:Nothing really - It was good value.
Review 110:So convenient for the town. The staff were really helpful. It was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. They explained that as it was Christmas Eve it may be noisy until midnight and gave us a room on the back.
Review 111:Shouting and screaming in street until 2.30 on Saturday night, then church bells every half hour all night. Only slept for a couple of hours. Worst sleep ever in any hotel for me. Window would not shut, so only secondary double glazing to protect against noise - and horribly hot and stuffy with that shut. Scylla and Charybdis! Bathroom light and shower not working.
Review 112:Clean, friendly staff, flexible check-in, free parking, decent breakfast.
Review 113:Nothing to dislike
Review 114:the rooms were spotless, quiet and very comfortable. we had to stay an extra night so we had to change rooms and it was no problem with the changeover, The staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful. We have stayed in other hotels locally and this is the best. Great location.
Review 115:Access to car park under narrow arch and over vicious speed humps.
Review 116:Clean and spacious room. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Excellent Italian restaurant round the corner.
Review 117:Slow wifi at the evening Rather small english breakfast
Review 118:Hotel is not far from Sherborne Abbey- the rooms are at the 2nd and 3rd floor. The 1st floor is a popular pub with rather attractive prices. Free car parking
Review 119:No heating in bedroom. It was October November weather
Review 120:Welcoming breakfast room Staff tried their very best and were as helpful as they could possibly br
Review 121:Very nice tripple room at the top of two flights of stairs - with a little view of the Abbey - hotel/pub itself nice -convenient and cosy in the heart of Sherborne - breakfast choice of cereal /fruit plus full english which was very nice - great choice of pub grub served all day which we had one evening - pub noisy on a Saturday evening but didn't disturb our sleep - would def stay again
Review 122:WiFi was sometimes shakey.
Review 123:Great location. Right across from the Abbey. Shops and pubs all within easy walking. Do not miss the 7th Century Saxon abbey. Wonderfull stonework.
Review 124:Lovely welcoming team. Room was lovely and comfortable. Nice powerful shower. Great breakfast and also had a meal in the evening which was also very good. Would love to stay there again.
Review 125:Not enough staff on duty in the public bar which long waits to get served with food and drinks
Review 126:The room was clean and comfortable with good facilities.
Review 127:Maybe the rooms could have been a bit more moderner.
Review 128:Central to the town and the location of the course. The shower was good. Pub underneath which served food too.
Review 129:A lot of stairs to top floor with heavy bags! A little noisy but then this is a pub.
Review 130:Excellent location in centre of very interesting town. Friendly helpful staff. Good pub style meals and breakfast.
Review 131:Nothing
Review 132:Warm welcome on arrival. Free on site parking. Central location. Well appointed room. Comfy bed. Good shower. Excellent breakfast. All for a very reasonable price.
Review 133:On the whole there was nothing that made us feel we should complain, and we would certainly stay here again.
Review 134:The food is very good value for money, with an excellent choice of menue.the bar has a good stock of real ale etc,and very friendly staff.
Review 135:Free WiFi. Right in the centre of town. Breakfast was great and the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Clean, quiet room on second floor.
Review 136:our room was at the front of the hotel and all we could hear was the front door banging when we arrived on the Friday the door was opened so it wasn't a problem and when we asked if the door could be opened again we where told t was to cold , plus there was a lot of noise from people sat outside the pub
Review 137:the room was lovely clean and everything we needed, the breakfast was great
Review 138:Signage to the car park could do with being improved.
Review 139:Location in the centre of the town. Size of Room Staff were very friendly View from the front bedroom
