Reviews for The Five Bells

Review 1:The staff are friendly and we have always been given a warm welcome when we have stayed at the Five Bells Hotel. The breakfasts and evening meals are very good.

Review 2:We were checked into an apartment, initial excitement ebbed away when we figured there is one double bed upstairs in the room and the sofa bed downstairs which was not very comfortable....I would have very much preferred a large family room, which is what I booked, since we were only going to be there for a night and the kitchen facilities available in the apartment weren't of much use to us anyway.

Review 3:My 7 year old loved the sofa bed when she saw it first, it was magic for her to discover a bed under the sofa as she had never seen one before. Minimalist staff and service which was good. Breakfast was value fir money, parking was convenient more so as I got to park right in front of the property gate without any fuss!

Review 4:The runner in the stairs is becoming worn and could use replacing in the next few months.

Review 5:The staff is warm and welcoming! Any question that I had was handled with empathy and kindness. I´d definitely stay here again!

Review 6:no bad experiences

Review 7:overall the room was clean the bed was very much to my liking the electric sockets could have been more accessible and wifi could have been free but there just niggly little things

Review 8:No Wifi available (first night it worked after paying 3 pound, fair price imo, though no access rest of our stay) Very loud, music and restaurant noises are very

Review 9:very friendly people, good restuarant, nice room.we got a nice price (about 35 pounds)

Review 10:we booked a table to eat to save time but even though there are only a handful of tables we waited over an hour and a half for our meal to be served after ordering. also our bed had no headboard and our pillows were up against the radiator also our bottom sheet did not fit our mattress, but to top it all the pub sign was hung right outside the bedroom window and banged and squeeked all night long in the wind so no sleep every thing looked just a bit shabby and grubby.

Review 11:As above

Review 12:The apartment itself was lovely and clean but the food was over priced and to top it off my husband ( who's a chef of 16 years) was served chicken that was off the smell was horrendous and when told the manager she was extremely rude snatched the plate walked into the kitchen then marched back out asking what the problem was. I also had chicken but fajitas instead had started eating mine and am now in disneyland ( we stayed at five bells night before euro tunnel ) with food poisoning from the meal we had at the five bells!

Review 13:Sofa bed in the lounge is poor quality and not really comfortable. Cots should be available to families travelling with young children. Parking is an issue. Bathroom needs improvement: shower is not working properly the door doesn't close and water goes everywhere. Kitchen is poorly equipped: no washing up liquid and the sponge was really unhygienic...

Review 14:Very spacious. Good place when you travel with family. Nice and warm.

Review 15:It was quiz night in the pub below and the questions were read out over a mike. Difficult to drown out the endless questions even with the television. Cheap air fresheners used in communal corridor-very cloying. Breakfast was in the pub and not included in the price. I just chose toast and coffee. The coffee was instant but the only other diners had cafetieres . I was told that the coffee machine was broken (machine, for a cafetiere?) The coffee was undrinkable but was charged for on top of the quoted price for the breakfast at an eye-watering £1.85. To add insult to injury I left my 'phone charger in the room. When I rang the next day they said they would post it to me. It has yet to materialise, x weeks later.

Review 16:The room was nicely presented

Review 17:whilst we managed to park right outside the building this could be an issue for future guests Please repair the leaking cold water tap in room 3.

Review 18:For us convenient to where we were visiting

Review 19:The shower tray didn't clear as quickly as I would expect the water was up to the top of the tray by the time I had finished my shower

Review 20:The food was excellent, the rooms were clean and tidy

Review 21:this was our 4th stay and will be our last no lights in yard to accommadation pitch black no food which we were not informed of when we made booking and a landlady who look like she had slept in what she was wearing so we went elsewhere for breakfast not what it use to be

Review 22:nothing

Review 23:Very little to say against it, the only thing that caused a little trouble was the lack of parking when we arrived. But that was only on the first night, subsequent nights it wasn't a problem.

Review 24:The apartment was very well equipped, the owner was extremely friendly and the food served at the pub restaurant next door was really nice. Couldn't have asked for more over the course of the trip really.

Review 25:There could be more shelving in the shower room to put your wash gear . The fire safety lights kept my friend awake to bright . fridge a tad to small . Plenty of kitchen cupboard space not needed unless you are staying for long periods

Review 26:Spacious apartment plenty of room any faults are minor

Review 27:Our apartment at The Five Bells was comfortable and clean. We really enjoyed eating dinner in the pub, too. The food was so good we ate there 4 out of 5 nights. The couple who manage the property couldn't have been nicer to us.

Review 28:Nothing

Review 29:Fantastic place, owners very welcoming, food was amazing I expect just standard pub food but it was the best meal we have had in a long time. Apartment room was lovely and clean, great shower and clean towels and bedding. Would recommend to everyone

Review 30:There was no car parking available at the Pub, so finished up parking over 50metres a way, on a side road

Review 31:The food and the spacious light room we stayed in.

Review 32:It not so much we didn't like but there was no clothes to wipe up cups etc also not enough tea & sugar

Review 33:The staff were very helpful as we were later arriving and it was late at night but allowed for the delay and let us in. And we needed to leave early the next morning for the ferry they were very understanding

Review 34:Poor reception on arrival and unable to gain access to the pub on leaving or to have breakfast.

Review 35:Great value as we were given an apartment for the price of a room.

Review 36:Next to a very noisey road and we had people sat drinking and laughing very loudly right outside our room until midnight which kept myself and my children awake, not great when you have got a 4am start! Sofa beds were very uncomfortable.

Review 37:Room was very clean and equipped with everything you need for an overnight stay.

Review 38:Just one overnight for an 8-00 a.m. ferry from Dover. Room excellent, staff very friendly, print staggering. would definitely recommend and use again.

Review 39:Green safety lights in rooms made it hard to sleep. Food on third night was very slow and not comparable with other nights Parking was on road side

Review 40:Good staff lovely food on first two nights. Pet friendly pub with good walks round the area.easy to find

Review 41:Parking a problem.

Review 42:Beautiful cooked steak - had eaten steak the previous evening at a French restaurant in Convent Garden & this was better. Clean room & comfortable beds.

Review 43:Not enough chairs for a party of six, not enough kitchen supplies for self catering. Lots of dust on the ceilings.

Review 44:Friendly staff, helpful. Spacious. Close to the ferries.

Review 45:Friendly Staff, very clean, only used for 1 night stop over stay before ferry crossing but from short time spent there we would deffinately recommend The Five Bells, lovely Food and friendly bar. 10/10.

Review 46:Wifi, odour from ensuite.

Review 47:Location for Dover is good. Only stayed one night, owners were OK but not overly friendly. Room was a little dated but adequate apart from the strange odour from the ensuite. The free wifi was not good and may as well not have been there. We would stay again but only for one night. Can't comment on breakfast or the bar as we left early and the bar was empty when we arrived.

Review 48:No breakfast was available for early departures. There was a lot of noise during the night from various sources. The shower was rather compact!

Review 49:We had an evening meal, which was very good. It was Sunday evening, so it's good that this was available.

Review 50:We only stopped here one night because we had an early ferry in the morning. The pub was friendly, we had a nice dinner, the room was clean and comfortable. Great start to our holiday.

Review 51:Nothing that I can complain about

Review 52:Staff so friendly and we're made to feel very welcome! The food was lovely in the restaurant! Bed so so comfortable x

Review 53:Very dirty, not only our studio, tables never cleaned. Exhaust fan inoperable, sink loose almost fell off the wall, parking only available on a tight corner junction.

Review 54:Great location, easy to get to.

Review 55:Pleasant hosts and accommodated our late arrival and early departure. Only 15 minutes from the ferry port but this is busy with traffic from early morning , so make allowance if you have a ferry between 7-9 am

Review 56:We arrived after midnight due to our car hire company letting us down. The owner very kindly made up the sofa beds for us in both rooms and got out of bed upon our arrival at 12.45am to let us in. Thank you so much for your kindness.

Review 57:Fantastic family run place to stay, food was excellent the people who run it make you feel completely at ease and at home with their warm, friendly approach to customers

Review 58:The only complaint is about the couch beds in the apartment. Not very comfortable at all but the double bed upstairs was nice.

Review 59:Shelly and Simon were both really wonderful and the food is quite good.

Review 60:Parking was a small issue but there are ways round it this wouldn't detract from the venue.

Review 61:Great location for us as we were on our way to Germany via early morning ferry so overnight stay was the best option. Room was clean and tidy, food was great and staff very friendly. Would recommend.

Review 62:Everything was great! The owners, location, service, food, etc. We loved staying there and were sad to leave. We definitely would love to stay there again!

Review 63:Sloppy, unattentive bar staff (wrapped up in their mobile phones)

Review 64:I liked our room, Thought the landlord & Landlady were really friendly and breakfast was fabulous

Review 65:The only thing I didn't like was our bedroom was at the side of the road so that what really disappoint me. Can't sleep properly of the car noise.

Review 66:It was just one night stay. The apartment was quite good. Everything what u need. Overall quite happy with stay and good value for money.

Review 67:Spacious accommodation in apartment - double bed with en-suite plus two sofa-beds in living room, all for £60. Two tv's in apartment, good beer and meal in pub ten yards from the door.

Review 68:Really difficult crossover for new owners as old owner still in accommodation above so stuff his stuff stored at side. They were without a chef so had friend cooking dinners. Was a long wait and some food wasn't too good but new landlord was keen to make amends & welcomed all criticism to enable him to take on board and make improvements & prevent bad reviews so credit to the new owners who are having a few teething problems but want the opportunity to sort & put right. It's early days but sure these new owners will put 5bells firmly on map as such a reasonable comfortable beautiful place to stay. We had no problem parking but rembet it's in a quaint little village so this explains parking limitations!

Review 69:New owners of few weeks very friendly beautiful quaint pub with separate units of accommodation within courtyard which is very comfortable overall. Lovely sunny relaxed area for Resturant. Sure new owners will make it huge success & make improvements. Great value for what you get we stayed in apartment

Review 70:Room a little on the cool side, couldn't get the radiator working but weather wasn't that cold

Review 71:Very helpful friendly staff. Hadn't booked breakfast but they provided 9 cooked breakfasts at short notice. Rooms were nice and clean, bed was comfortable

Review 72:Nothing major to report shower cubicle did'nt have a shelf within for shampoo n stuff ' And noise from road if you leave or need a window open

Review 73:The apartment was excellent for what i wanted . I Have booked to stay again

Review 74:Spacious little self catering apartment at a fantastic price. A perfect place for our one night stay before jumping on the ferry early the next morning.

Review 75:On arrival barely no where to park and had to leave our car on side of road. I called twice in advance about travel cot and had it had it on booking yet still on arrival nO cot in our room ready for our baby after our long journey also to top it off we then had to make our own bed!!! Not impressed for £80 and very disappointing start to our holiday

Review 76:Location to Dover port

Review 77:Our room was very noisy from the traffic as it was on the corner over a very busy road. The room was clean but felt slightly damp and as if people had smoked in it. Breakfast was not included and the pub where it was served was not overly homely. We just had expected a bit more for how much we had paid.

Review 78:The staff were friendly

Review 79:The unit smelled. Self catering items were very limited and saucepans etc were rusty. Very noisy through the floor when young children upstairs woke up at 4am

Review 80:Basic accommodation

Review 81:Evening meal was pretty standard, the veg curry was a bit small, parking not the best.

Review 82:Nice pub and clean rooms ideal location, nice location staff friendly

Review 83:Very poor selection of cereals for those that do not eat a cooked breakfast.

Review 84:Value for money, clean and comfortable room. Lovely accommodation if you like the old English pub experience.

Review 85:The green safety lights were quite luminous at night. You cannot open the window at night as there is a busy road next to the hotel.

Review 86:The very friendly staff. The appartment had 2 rooms, so the children had a room of their own and 2 seperate beds.

Review 87:Awkward to park the car close to the building. Not the best pub food we have eaten.

Review 88:Lovely clean and spacious room with tea and coffee making facilities. Good for an overnight stop before taking the ferry.

Review 89:The duvets could do with a wash, some things in the apartment were sort of broken.

Review 90:Big apartment with separate bedroom for us parents. Across the yard from pub, so we could eat there while the kids were in bed and still keep an eye on them.

Review 91:Very friendly staff, couldn't do enough for us, kept the restaurant open late for us so we eat when we returned from golf. Apartment was plenty big enough for 3 adults. Food in the restaurant was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay

Review 92:Very comfortable, pretty and well maintained Pub/Restaurant. Room was small but well appointed with a comfy bed. Spotlessly clean. Staff very pleasant, friendly and helpful.

Review 93:Something beyond control. its a busy road. So it has nothing to do with our stay

Review 94:Almost everything. We had a good welcoming service and smiling staff always ready to help.

Review 95:Parking was very difficult, but we overcame it.

Review 96:John was a wonderful host. Lovely pub with excellent food. Location was ideal for us. Walmer and Deal Castles just up the road. Seaside Just 10 mins drive. Very handy for the ferry.

Review 97:Door didn't lock, dogs whining and barking until late at night in owners bedroom. V Poor breakfast and staff are very different when the owner isn't there no customer service skills at all!!

Review 98:The owner very helpful and courteous

Review 99:The road in noisy in the morning, did not get what we ordered - only advised when it was served... (no mushy peas - asked for brown tast and received white)

Review 100:The reception, the fact you have a restaurant and bar in same place.

Review 101:Room wasn't cleaned properly before hand even though an early check in was requested... Small things like carpet not hoovered & shower wasn't clean. Didn't matter too much as only stayed one night

Review 102:Staff were lovely and room was nice food was great

Review 103:The breakfast was very dry and oily. Could have done with a cup of tea WITH the cost of the breakfast. Maybe some more beans instead of a mouthful

Review 104:Very easy going. Just booked and straight in to relax.

Review 105:I would stay again no problem but the village is very small with no shops whatsoever therefore the car has to be used should you require anything.

Review 106:We hired the apartment for us and 5 family members to visit us. Plenty of space and two toilets, it was just right.

Review 107:A very handy spot for the ferry port, friendly staff, and a great welcome , good quality evening meal. My wife and i have stayed there on four occasions, never been disappointed . We will be back .

Review 108:Black hairs on the sink and in the bed. No milk with the tea/coffee tray in the room - not great when you get back late and want a cuppa. Worst of all, the shower mixer was broken, so no hot water. When I complained the woman (not the owner) said they knew! It was the owner who showed us to the room the day before. I cannot believe she did this and knowingly left us in a room with no working shower. Needless to say I negotiated a significant discount as a result of this.

Review 109:The room decor. Bed was comfy. Breakfast was pretty good.

Review 110:No bin in the room and old toiletries left in the shower. The staff forgot the Spring hour ahead so we were left locked out of the breakfast room, but they did apologise.

Review 111:John the manager was a delight, welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant.

Review 112:the food was excellent very good quality. staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for you. definitely stay here again. it felt very warm and welcoming. Best breakfast ever!!

Review 113:There was a step between the lounge area and the bedroom and bathroom, my little girl tripped over it and badly stumped her toe. We were warned it was there but she's only 4 so misjudged it.

Review 114:The apartment was clean and a decent size. The people who own it were really friendly. The main reason for us to stay here was that it was so close to the ferry port which allowed us to catch a really early ferry.

Review 115:The sofa bed was not very comfortable for our family members who slept on it. Could do with another mattress. We also couldn't connect to the free wifi advertised in the apartment- so if you stay for business and need internet access, you won't be getting very far!

Review 116:We really enjoyed having a living room, kitch and bedroom to enjoy. We were not expecting it to be so great. We were out for a party on the evening and had our own private access to our apartment.

Review 117:A very nice place to stay. Clean, comfortable and friendly. The WiFi is not brilliant, but more than adequate for email etc. fantastic value for money with good food and great beer.

Review 118:None whatsoever

Review 119:John the owner was very accommodating the easy checking and out was easy for me as I travelled from Scotland and arrived late then away first thing in the morning on both nights would definitely be back if I travel to France again the room was large enough for me my wife and 3 kids with main room with ensuite and 2 sofa beds in the lounge which the kids loved

Review 120:My major problem was the fact that both the pillows and duvet were exposed on arrival - which showed that both the pillows and duvet were dirty and very much in need of a wash/clean. I didn't look any further but I did wonder about the state of the mattress cover and mattress.

Review 121:Very welcoming and friendly

Review 122:Parking not secure. Breakfast was not included.

Review 123:Room was clean and warm. Staff friendly and welcoming. Would stay again, good value. Out of town but not too far. Handy for Dover port.

Review 124:That we could not stay another day....

Review 125:The location, being on first name terms with the very friendly owners. We were there for 2 nights to visit Dover castle and eat in the Restaurant both nights, Menu and food were very good (I am very picky) The room was immaculate. We will be back......

Review 126:we had a very short visit for a wedding locally- with an early start the next morning. we were able to check in early and there was no hassle signing out early.

Review 127:We needed to arrive at the hotel late so the later booking in time suited us perfectly. The apartment was a great size, sofa bed was great for the kids and the bedroom was comfortable. Checking out at 10.30 was a rush with our kids so we accidentally left our sons comfort blanket behind. He can't go anywhere without it so we were in a pickle. Realising late afternoon and almost back in London with a hysterical boy, we rang and asked for it to be posted back to us. I have to say it arrived after a few days, much to the delight of our son. We are very grateful especially as the blanket, old and in tatters, is precious to our 5 year old. It was so lovely of the Five Bells to do that for us, it made our stay even more of a pleasure and the staff are fantastic. This was great customer service! Only regret was having to rushing off without trying the breakfast.

Review 128:Stayed for 12 nights as a business traveller. Tony & John were the perfect hosts very friendly and created the perfect atmosphere where you can sit in the lounge and read without being disturbed. execellent food as well

Review 129:We didn't have a bad experience, there is no car park for the pub but we managed to park without a problem when we were there. This could prove a bit of a problem for anybody with mobility issues if you cannot get a space outside the pub. However, I'm sure everything possible would be done to assist if you contacted the pub in advance to let them know.

Review 130:The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Liked the relaxed breakfast, choose a time to book a table then select anything from cereals to a full breakfast, the option is yours. If you don't have a big appetite a bacon sandwich is particularly good with lovely fresh bread. The stay was excellent value for money.
