Reviews for Hotel Rangá
Review 1:The staff were incredibly helpful with all recommendations and were exceptionally welcoming. The dinner was amazing and lounge was perfect. Although we did not see the Northern Lights, it was comforting knowing that we would get a wake up call if they appeared.
Review 2:the general manager was lovely - he took time to get to know each of the guests. we were also lucky enough to see the northern lights for a couple of hours
Review 3:Although the food gets a great reputation, I can be fussy ... Ordered the cheeseburger and when I bit into it, blood splattered all over the table. I was too embarrassed to say anything so sure they would have fixed this for me. The desserts are to die for though!
Review 4:The staff were very friendly and the rooms are warm and comfortable. It's located in the middle of nowhere but the isolation is a good thing and makes you feel relaxed and cut off from everywhere else. It's cosy and beautifully decorated and a wonderful place to relax and unwind. I have stayed here twice now and been fortunate enough to see the northern lights twice now. We stayed close to Christmas and it was a lovely touch to wake up to find a little present hanging on our door handle each day. Thank you!
Review 5:I love the fact you can step just outside the hotel and the northern lights were right above you. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and the hotel was fabulous.
Review 6:Would like a higher quality of bedding.
Review 7:Staff were brilliant. Very friendly and helpful and replenished buffet breakfast frequently. Food was delicious. Setting and lounge areas lovely.
Review 8:A little pricey, but for Iceland it is not over priced. Our meal took quite a long time to be served on our second evening, but they did offer an extra glass of wine as an apology.
Review 9:The staff were very friendly and helpful, the manager even coming in during our dinner to let us know the northern lights were particularly good and we should all go now! We were fortunate to see the lights (a day of calm in between two storms!) and it was a great location for it - indeed one of the main reasons to visit this particular hotel. Its location was good for the golden circle and the southern sights, but you must be aware that its a good hour drive to even the nearest highlights!
Review 10:Standard rooms are basic for the money. However, you really aren't paying for the room as its all about the lights here!!
Review 11:Great place to see the lights, with friendly staff and lovely food.
Review 12:Beautiful place, stayed here with my wife in our honeymoon hoping to see the northern lights and the staff alerted us to sightings all night! It was amazing not having to wait and search but just enjoy our time in the hot tub and eat the most amazing food!!! Most definitely will come back on our next trip!
Review 13:Lovely hotel, location was a great base for South/southwest iceland and we were lucky enough to see the northern lights. Would love to come back here!
Review 14:That I couldn't stay longer.
Review 15:The rooms were comfortable & clean. We had gorgeous views of the volcano in the day and the good fortune of seeing the northern lights at night. The staff was so lovely. The remote location was scenic and romantic. It was an ideal experience and I would readily stay there again.
Review 16:My bed was too soft and squishy for my liking but hey ho. We really enjoyed our stay here but imho it was overpriced for what we got back in exchange.
Review 17:Amazing food (try the puffin!), lovely decor, the rooms were of a high standard and there is a real sense of mystique and wonder whilst relaxing in the hot tubs under the stars out in the middle of nowhere.
Review 18:The rooms were very dated and small. The staff are very procedural and do not provide individualized guest attention. Limited amenities and half of the rooms face the parking lot.
Review 19:Location was great - within 30 minutes of two great waterfalls.
Review 20:Very comfortable rooms, food was excellent and staff were very attentive and charming. Great place, hope to return soon! And, we saw the Northern Lights!!
Review 21:check-in was bad, as the reception area was manned by a staff member unqualified in this position as the other staff were attending a meeting upstairs. It was unprofessional
Review 22:The staff made us most welcome
Review 23:If you're traveling off-season, the hotel restaurant seems to be the only dining option nearby, though they do have a more casual room service menu.
Review 24:Beautiful hotel, like a high-end lodge. Excellent restaurant. The complimentary welcome drink at the bar (beer and wine only) is a nice touch.
Review 25:Location, nice and quiet place, the staff is very helpful and nice. Amazing breakfast, amazing view, amazing junior suite (african style). We have really enjoyed our stay in this hôtel.
Review 26:VERY expensive restaurant. Meal for 4 cost £300! Very high standard of cuisine and service, but still too expensive.
Review 27:Very friendly and helpful staff. Great service. Great food in the restaurant.
Review 28:The rooms that don't have river view.
Review 29:Great facilities, friendly staff, amazing food. The manager was a great host and gives the hotel a welcoming feeling with a personalised touch.
Review 30:I found it really expensive when I consider the overall experience but it might just be that I do not fully comprehend Iclandic luxury. I was also not very impressed with the bed. I've stayed at B&Bs with beds that are more comfortable than theirs.
Review 31:The hotel has a neat winter lodge type of atmosphere. The room was spacious. Extremely clean. The staff was friendly.
Review 32:The staff, particularly the manager, were extremely friendly and welcoming. The room was lovely and the food was fantastic. The set up for watching the northern lights was wonderful!
Review 33:Having to leave!
Review 34:Everything! From the friendly welcome at dinner from the owner, to the classy comfortable rooms, to the observatory in the grounds with its own astronomer, to the aurora viewing seats and warm suits, to the aurora wake up call to the hot tub, to the beautiful open scenery to the gorgeous breakfast and dinner. Yes this place costs but its high end and if you get a good rate its well worth it.
Review 35:Our suite was great. The breakfast was excellent. The staff were kind and knowledgeable about the area, and the manager of the hotel was kind enough to give us a ride to the nearest bus station in the morning.
Review 36:We were only there one night but there was some sand on the sheets that made me question if they had been changed from the previous guest.
Review 37:The stargazing station with their astronomer was such a unique amazing touch to a gorgeous hotel. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, and even the owner made his rounds and made all of the guests feel special. This was our favorite hotel of the trip by far.
Review 38:I love that owner Fridrik Pálsson came through dining room during meals to greet his guests and chat to see how their day had been (and if he could offer advice or suggestions on what to do). Positively old school and FABULOUS. Hoteliers across the globe could take a cue from him. Hotel is gorgeous. Staff is wonderful and room are charming and comfortable and unique. What's not to like here?! It's fantastic!
Review 39:it was simply really expensive- we were charged like it's a 5 star hotel when its more like a great 3 star hotel. They also charged us outlandish prices for other accommodations, like heating up the food we brought as we couldn't eat theirs.
Review 40:Staff was very accommodating. My husband and I were in the minority that found the lack of a/c troubling and the staff eagerly provided us with a fan.
Review 41:It is simply much too expensive for what you get. Half of The Price would be acceptable.
Review 42:It is The best Hotel in The South, no doubt, but there are better one's closer to Reyklavik. Dinner was ok, but Not outstanding. Rooms ok, but Not comparable with 4 Star Hotels in Europe. Breakfast ok, but nothing Special.
Review 43:This is not a criticism, just something unexpected based on the pictures we'd seen: The hotel decor is a little more rustic than modern. But very nice!
Review 44:Great restaurant with a great view, very friendly staff, comfortable beds and rooms. Beautifully situated alongside a slow-moving river that you can wade in if you like (we saw some fly fishers further down). Convenient to Thorsmork, Vik, and the Golden Circle.
Review 45:If you're looking to be walking distance to a town or village, this is not your spot. In summer there will likely be one or two small tours staying here.
Review 46:Beautiful setting by the gorgeous Ranga River in a quiet location with wide open views. Helpful, friendly staff Dining room in scenic setting with lovely views Excellent local food, beautifully prepared
Review 47:The Ranga is in a spectacular location, and within reasonable driving distance to the Vatnajokull glacier. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel manager "worked the room" at meals greeting and chatting with the guests. The room, though a bit smaller than most people expect In a "luxury" hotel, was very clean and comfortable. The meals were delicious. We would definitely recommend the Ranga for a stay in Iceland.
Review 48:(The room was a bit on the small side.)
Review 49:A lovely spot, a lot of nice touches and I loved the back porch/terrace and hot tubs overlooking the river…..
Review 50:Room was quite small for price and bedcovers were old fashioned. Blackout blind only came over half of door so light came in at night!
Review 51:Hot tubs outside rooms, fantastic food with awesome views. Lovely staff.
Review 52:Pull out couch uncomfortable. For that price, 3 people per room should have been more spacious.
Review 53:Great staff, super helpful with injuries we had. Unique countr flair with unexpected comfort in this area of iceland.
Review 54:Too overpriced for what you get. Dinner is crazy expensive with not a lot of options, staff is always stuffy, just plain not impressed...
Review 55:Decent rooms, clean
Review 56:Nothing!!
Review 57:This is a really lovely hotel! It is one of those elusive beasts that has a manager present most of the time!! Staff really helpful & fantastic food. It is quite expensive but worth it!
Review 58:Liked everything
Review 59:Upgraded to a deluxe room which was beautiful thank you. Whole experience was beautiful. Peaceful, lovely sitting in hot tub admiring the view, lovely staff, gorgeous meal.
Review 60:Our room was smaller than expected. Having a Queen bed and a sofa bed to accommodate 3 people left little space to move around. However, it was very clean and having access to a walk-out patio was fantastic!
Review 61:The manager and staff were very friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the food... Dinner was absolutely delicious and the breakfast buffet was the best that we experienced in Iceland!
Review 62:Hotel is overpriced and over rated! Defiantly not worth the money we paid. Manager does come and say hello to all new arrivals but this is not personal at all. He has the same speech for everyone. Food is good but overpriced also. Overall not that impressed with this hotel.
Review 63:Friendly and helpful staff on reception.
Review 64:Don't know if we just got unlucky with noisy neighbours but walls were paper thin. The hotel supply ear-plugs which we appreciated, it was just a shame to be woken so early (having been kept up so late!)
Review 65:Loved Hotel Ranga. We splashed out on the last night of our honeymoon and this was by far our most luxurious night in Iceland. Lovely touches around the hotel and great attention to detail. Staff friendly and courteous at all times. Food exceptional. Absolutely loved the hotel and would definitely recommend
Review 66:We had a really nice stay here. The staff and owner are lovely they will help you with anything you need and are really knowledgable, they make you feel right at home. The dinner we had was some of the best food we have ever had. The breakfast each morning was a great selection. I have no complaints at all it is a wonderful hotel. Our room had the hot tubs right outside which were amazing. We will definitely be making a trip back, hopefully this year!
Review 67:Unfortunately we were unable to make it to the Hotel Ranga due to a blizzard. Having warned the hotel we would be late I then had to phone from our stranded hire car in a ditch to say we could not make it. Despite the short notice, the Hotel agreed to cancel our reservation without charge - a great gesture that is fully appreciated. We will come and stay with you one day - it might be in the Summer though!
Review 68:Underfloor heating in the bathroom made it a bit too hot.
Review 69:Excellent food but limited menu in particular for vegetarians. Relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. Really well set up for viewing Northern Lights with warm suits provided and the staff will wake you up when they appear.
Review 70:Minor niggle that without a dedicated barman it took a long time to get served at the bar when the dining room was busy.
Review 71:Excellent well tended rooms. The food was superb. The staff were very good; helpful and pleasant. Any questions or requests were dealt with thoroughly and booking for any attractions can be made through the front desk.
Review 72:Not a lot! Good wine and imported spirits a bit expensive, similar to rest of the country. Google navigation will take you to a small road in Hella so watch for signs on highway 1 instead.
Review 73:Rural location a few km from Hella. They will wake you if the northern lights put in an appearance. Comfortable rooms with jacuzzi etc. Quality restaurant.
Review 74:we have a problem the first time that we stay there with the toilet. Then, the second night they upgrade our room and give us the best suit that they have, well done. 5 stars food
Review 75:We were delayed by one night as roads were closed but they didn’t charge us, which they could have done. Staff were very good and the food excellant. Would definately return.
Review 76:The standard room was very far from what we expected, it's small and anonymous, which does not justify the extremely high price. Staff was really incompetent, they were slow, gave bad advises on what to see around and overall not flexible to accommodate any of our requests. Jacuzzi was not working properly, the breakfast is average, prepared with little passion...
Review 77:The location is good, excellent dinner but very pricey
Review 78:The price of tours etc. from the hotel were about 3 times the amount compared to being taken from the city! Very remote if you can't afford to do any sightseeing while you are there. Restaurant very expensive but do have a bar menu also. Needs to be more hot tubs as people seemed to stay in for hours at a time.
Review 79:Hotel Ranga is a great hotel in the countryside. Very nicely presented with a modern "rustic" appearance. The service was great especially in the bar and restaurant area. Breakfast was assorted and plentiful (and free). Comfortable areas to relax and have a drink in. Also, a 'happy' hour every evening which was actually about 2 1/2 hours long. I was there on New Years Eve and, even though we missed the fireworks show in the city, we were given complimentary champagne and firework flares to celebrate.
Review 80:Honestly, I could not fault our stay at Hotel Ranga.
Review 81:Everything was amazing! Staff, location, views, facilities, food, wine, ambience. Nice touch too that the owner of the hotel introduced himself to us, made himself available throughout our stay and checked our satisfaction on a number of occasions. The food in the restaurant was amongst some of the best I have ever been served.
Review 82:The two hour drive back to Reykjavik and to the Blue Lagoon. It is a trade off, you have to make to get the most of the northern lights.
Review 83:The staff including the owner, were very friendly and helpful. Location was great to see the northern lights, the Golden Circle, glaciers, etc. The restaurant was excellent!! Try the Artic Char. It will not disappoint. I would highly recommend staying at Hotel Ranga!
Review 84:Nothing
Review 85:Its a beautiful location and an excellent base to see southern Iceland and the northern lights. Food was first class and the service very good indeed. Can thoroughly recommend.
Review 86:Fantastic hotel in a quiet location off the Ring Road near Hella. The hotel is like this huge log cabin bungalow with enormous bedrooms with terrace doors either to the north (parking lot side from where you can watch the Northern Lights) or to the south ("garden" side with view onto the river and access to outside hot tub). I also had a huge whirlpool in my bathroom. The restaurant and bar within the hotel are also great and serve spectacular food and very nice drinks. You can have yourself entered into a "wake up call list" in case the Northern Lights are spotted during the night. Also, if you don't have your own with you, you can borrow a tripod for your camera from reception to make proper photos of the Aurora.
Review 87:There was such a bottleneck at dinner that we waited more than 2 hours for the dinner - the desert came with a complimentary chocolate cake, which was quite nice. There seems to be a lot of staff for dining and breakfast, but they sometimes do not seem to know what to do. The Superior Room and the dining rooms seem a bit barren.
Review 88:Beautiful setting Friendly staff Big bathroom Hot tub outside Very nice bar area
Review 89:Standard rooms are a bit small. Restaurant is rather expensive.
Review 90:Stunning wooden lodge hotel. Staff and owner take great pride in their hotel. We were there for the Christmas buffet and it was something I had never seen before. Great location to see the Northern Lights if you are lucky enough.
Review 91:The wing we were on only had one hot tub which was occupied for two hours straight by the same group so we had to walk to the other end of the hotel to the other two hot tubs which were not warm enough to stay in. This spoilt our enjoyment of the hotel
Review 92:Nothing - all good!
Review 93:THe owner/managers of this hotel really made us feel welcome and came to personally welcome us to the hotel. This is a really nice touch. They genuinely wanted to make our stay as good as possible. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent. We would definitely stay here again. I particularly enjoyed the way we were looked after by reception on advising us to stay away from areas with bad weather and good alternatives. I also loved how we were contacted when the northern lights began to appear and it felt like a big family sat outside with blankets in the wonderful chairs to view the spectacle. Thank you for making our last nights in Iceland a great experience.
Review 94:Pricey rooms
Review 95:Great location to see Northern Lights and explore South Iceland. Beautiful setting and would highly recommend doing an ATV tour of the area as you get to see a huge area that you wouldn't see otherwise. Rooms were good and comfortable.
Review 96:Food price (iceland problem) but just ask the bar meals menu and be happy (good and cheaper).
Review 97:Location, aurora, ambience... The best hotel outside the city.
Review 98:Leaving
Review 99:Staff were fabulous, very friendly and eager to help you in any way. Bedrooms were very comfy and spacious and the food/drink could was out of this world!
Review 100:This hotel was absolutely wonderful. We loved our time here and didn't want to leave when it was time to check out. The staff was excellent, the accommodations were phenomenal, and the food was delicious!
Review 101:Nothing.
Review 102:Everything. Very luxurious hotel, superb restaurant, excellent staff. The call out service for the northern lights at night time ensured we saw them on both nights of our stay. Thoroughly recommend. Treat yourself!
Review 103:Rooms a little small. Expensive.
Review 104:Great restaurant, staff was wonderful. Hot tub felt good. Happy hour nice. A very friendly owner who welcomes his guests.
Review 105:Breakfast very average. All cooked items tasted the same ... like bacon! No one to assist with luggage. Too expensive. Standards did not justify the price.
Review 106:Location
Review 107:The flies everywhere and the generally stuffy room. I think it was a time of the year problem more than the hotel's fault! I barely slept coz it was not dark for even 30 minutes and the shades could not cut out the light even at 4 am. And it was really expensive for literally one night's sleep.
Review 108:The Michelin quality food, the setting by the river, the hot tubs, the game room, the owner-manager...
Review 109:The staff were super friendly. The rooms had all the amenities that a traveler would need. We ate dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. The food was excellent and this was one of the best breakfast buffet's we had on our 5 day trip to Iceland. The owner came by while we were eating dinner as he was introducing himself to all of the customers. After a long day of touring, we especially appreciated the outdoor hot tubs which gave us a chance to relax and take in the local scenery.
Review 110:Rooms were a tad stuffy but otherwise we loved it and highly reommend it.
Review 111:Staff were helpful and friendly. The owner was on the premises and very engaging. The food was delicious and they went out of their way to accommodate those of us who were World Cup fans.
Review 112:Could provide more lounge space in bar area to encourage more of a social setting.
Review 113:Service was very attentive and accommodating.
Review 114:Amazing hotel! Lovely staff and food was great if a little pricey. Will definitely return.
Review 115:nothing
Review 116:Great location Facilities Aurora wake up call Breakfast Restaurant
Review 117:Loved the personal service, fabulous restaurant, and relaxing atmosphere.
Review 118:Rooms were quite old and tired, uncomfortable beds
Review 119:Excellent location with nice staff and restaurant Hot tub
Review 120:Wonderful location, lovely food, great atmosphere
Review 121:I wished the restaurant was a little more affordable. Amazing nonetheless.
Review 122:Amazing hotel in the best location if you have hired a car.
Review 123:Every thing perfect! The place, the staff, the food!
Review 124:Beautiful place! Wonderful staff
Review 125:Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was great, the hot tub relaxing and the northern lights amazing!
