Reviews for The Fisherman's Cot
Review 1:Rooms getting a bit tired now but clean and good value.
Review 2:Really friendly staff - nothing was too much trouble. We felt the welcome was genuine. Our arrival was a little late, however, we were still able to enjoy an excellent meal without being rushed.
Review 3:Food orders stopped at 8. Last orders at bar 9 o'clock rather early for Christmas and New Year celebrations
Review 4:Excellent location room with character and food very good standard. Excellent breakfasts.
Review 5:On arrival when we checked it we were informed that we would be staying in one of the lodges and were not informed of this at any point and understood that we would be in the main building. It was very, very cold on arrival and being the first room of three and next to the external door of the corridor, it was very noisy!
Review 6:Nothing bad to say but the grilled chicken salad was massive - far to big!
Review 7:We loved the location and accommodation. The river views are fantastic and as we had booked last minute to celebrate new years eve we were pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Although the bar closed at 9pm we were informed of good alternative venues for midnight drinks.
Review 8:We were not advised until arrival that the pub closed on New Years Eve at 9pm, we were directed to a pub across the road ! Dinner was poor they hardly had anything on the menu claiming they ran out over Christmas. The room was clean but the radiators were all off hence it was freezing !
Review 9:Wi fi available in the main pub but not in our room. So only able to connect our iPhones when at breakfast and evening meal. Mentioned it to the staff who said it sometimes is hit and miss.
Review 10:As it was for a family visit to Tiverton I have used the Fishermans Cott many times over the years, its setting is lovely and if you want to feel at home far away from the madding crowd theres no place like it :-)
Review 11:We had a room with an outside patio area and garden with fencing...directly outside our patio doors the area was quite dirty and the outdoor mat was indistinguishable as it was so old and dirty...unable to wipe our feet on it to re-enter our room. The table and chairs on the patio were also dirty and I used my own facial wipes to clean the chairs and table surface! The whole outer area needs a good wipe down and brush.
Review 12:Bed was comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Lovely location by the river.
Review 13:If we had been staying for a few days I would have found the lack of drawer space to be annoying. The shower head over the bath was too low for my husband (5 foot 8 inches) to stand completely underneath,
Review 14:Nice big room with a patio area outside. Warm welcome and friendly staff.
Review 15:Food was all fried, bedroom over looked car park even though we had requested river view
Review 16:Atmosphere was lovely and calming with beautiful view of the weir, bedroom spacious with ensuite, majority of staff polite and helpful
Review 17:The shower curtain wasn't installed properly, therefore wasn't able to do it's job properly in keeping all of the water in the bath tub! :o(
Review 18:I liked the peacefullness of the location. I loved the river, the food was excellent and the staff were amazing. ;o) x
Review 19:Eveything was lovely. A great room amazing view and excellent food! Also a great team of happy friendly staff.Cant fault it in any way what so ever, thankyou for a lovely weekend.
Review 20:The food could be a little hit & miss. Breakfast one morning was very under cooked, but okay another. Food in general was good.
Review 21:The view from the resturant
Review 22:I waited at reception to check out, no one there. Opposite there was a man I popped my head in and said "could I check out please" absolutely no response what so ever. Young lady eventually arrived at reception. Very ignorant will take my business across the road to the Trout Inn. Please do not respond as my mind is now set, that man needs a training course in basic manners.
Review 23:The bathroom shower was very low but that's what you might expect in a thatched house, but fine for one or two nights only. Could have been told about it though.
Review 24:We enjoyed the location and the staff and food were good.
Review 25:The room had very thin walls and was next to a boiler that was noisy one evening but this was rectified quickly. The room would have been better if there was a wardrobe and the desk had a couple of drawers. A hook on the door would have been useful to. None of the above would put us off staying there again though.
Review 26:Friendly place to stay, with good quality pub food in the evening and Cooked English breakfasts were individually prepared.
Review 27:You need to be able to climb a steep flight of stairs to get to the bedrooms.
Review 28:The location right on the river and near to a working water mill you can visit. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast beautifully cooked. Room had everything I needed. Large bathroom. Very comfortable bed. Very clean everywhere.
Review 29:The Hotel/Pub smelt of cooking/food somewhat a little off putting. short of staff generally. Problems with TV reception, only the elec. heater worked in the room. toilet seat loose. No hot water for a shave, only luke warm.
Review 30:Location
Review 31:This relies on location, food is average to poor and not good value for money. Room was nice size, with nice outdoor area but net curtains covered mildew/dirt at bottom.
Review 32:Location is lovely. Most of staff friendly and polite
Review 33:Shower ran only cold one morning and no hot water for shaving! Advised management and appeared corrected the next day. However water only luke warm after shower on 4th day, and again had to boil kettle to shave. Summation: Boiler unable to cope when all rooms occupied !
Review 34:Excellent riverside location. Very pleasant staff. Excellent food.
Review 35:Water in shower/bath not very hot in the evening and only cold the next morning, which was very disappointing. Hairdryer did not work.
Review 36:The location. Good Wifi connection. Lovely bacon at breakfast, although coffee was not very hot.
Review 37:We did not like the sloping roof over our beds and especially in the small en-suite. The nearby single lane historic bridge proved a trial at rush hour times. There is a lot more traffic now than when we first visited this area.
Review 38:The location was good for our purpose. Beds were comfortable. Our bedroom window overlooked the rapids of a small river-a pretty scene.
Review 39:Location stunning, atmosphere good, only stayed one night, had dinner here, was very good. Staff very helpful and friendly. Looking forward to returning here very soon.
Review 40:The room we had was not made for 6 foot tall people. Noise from the river was quite loud not easy to get to sleep.
Review 41:The location was great. The food was really great with generous portions.
Review 42:We were unaware that breakfast was included in our tariff. The first evening our meal took so long to be served that we had to take it to our room in order to watch a football match we wanted to see!
Review 43:The location and the friendly staff.
Review 44:The pub needs a dam good clean lots of spiders in the pub and were in the same place for the two days we stopped there after telling one of the waitress.
Review 45:The Location and the beer very good
Review 46:chilli con carne - awful - looked like leftovers ! kitchen smell at rear of accomodation - terrible thick smelly smoke pouring out of old fat really made you feel ill in the morning. disgusting honestly. Every noise of adjacent room could be heard - next door snored and it felt like it was in the same room - result was little sleep for and a sore head for my client meeting next day.
Review 47:location
Review 48:My only complaint would be that the outside of the place could do with a good clean. i.e. the paint work was very shabby and around the windows and doors were lots of cobwebs and dust.
Review 49:Loved the location. Staff were friendly and helpful. Local area was interesting. Food was very good. Parking was great.
Review 50:Could have done with a couple of coat hooks on the door to hang wet coats.
Review 51:A picturesque location, helpful and pleasant staff, comfortable room , excellent menu, exceptional steak.
Review 52:Although the food was delicious the lady waitress on the first morning was unwilling to let us have a river view, and on the second morning grumbled at us arriving at the end of the allowed time slot. This is the first holiday I have had for over 2 years and both my daughter & myself work very hard for well below average pay.Of course she wasn't to know any of this, but should bear in mind that this just might be the case and be kinder to guests. They are on holiday. All the other staff very polite and helpful.
Review 53:Hearing the river all night through the open window was very soothing and a treat. The matresses were very comfortable, we slept very well. Breakfast was ample, delicious and well cooked. The booking lady (Anna) was very helpful and polite, she tried very hard to accommodate all our needs even though it was a late booking.
Review 54:The décor in the main reception, bar and restaurant could do with a bit of attention,
Review 55:The Manager was fantastic, very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Rooms were great.
Review 56:nothing
Review 57:We particularly like the location having called in on previous occasions for a drink or a meal. Loved the quietness at night and the breakfast overlooking the lovely river and beautiful old bridge. The ducks were entertaining too!
Review 58:Poor sound insulation: we could hear the basket ball match in the room above and felt the tag wrestling match in the adjacent room. Double glazing would be nice for the two smaller windows.
Review 59:The location and our patio.
Review 60:Nothing I did not like.
Review 61:The best part of our stay was the ease and friendly staff. Eager to help us. Having hiked all day this was a very happy place and lovely location overlooking the river. The food was excellent and plenty of helpings. The breakfast was sumptious setting off on our way to Exbridge.
Review 62:Anna and All the staff were very friendly and helpful, The meals and breakfast were fantastic. We were made to feel completely at ease. The location is superb.
Review 63:There was lots of food at both the breakfasts and the Carvery but the quality was a little lacking that's why we marked it down slightly
Review 64:The location was lovely, the room big and comfortable and the staff very accommodating and chatty
Review 65:The breakfast was a little hit and miss and though there was plenty of choice, the food wasn't quite cooked through enough for either myself or my husband.
Review 66:The staff were amazing and couldn't do enough to make sure our stay was enjoyable.
Review 67:The room was getting shabby. The bed was very small for a larger room. Breakfast on both days took an age to arrive, at least 30 mins, but ok when arrived. The bar does not stay open for residents, which coupled with early country closing times, annoyed everyone staying when we were there. The staff were very rude and uncooperative when trying to order a drink to take to the room. Not a venue for a celebration!
Review 68:Location on river with nice views. Manager on arrival was helpful and friendly.
Review 69:Small bath, both big people so didn't fit However bathroom was spotless, lovely clean towels. Bedroom ceiling beam low, hubby 6ft 4 so had to remember to duck. but these are really just niggles, otherwise no problems at all.
Review 70:Very friendly staff, helpful young man on reception when we arrived, sorted out taxi to a wedding we were attending next day. Location is right on the river, lovely sitting outside having a meal watching the ducks walk up to your table. Really beautiful spot. Spacious room, comfy bed.Would not hesitate to book return visit.
Review 71:Awkward room with beam running through centre. Overheated corridor. Evidence of poor maintainence. Tired interior decor. Breakfast and main meal institutional catering to an indifferent standard
Review 72:Lovely location and views
Review 73:Staff were mostly youngsters and seemed rather laid back rather than trying to please customers, may have been a bad day!!
Review 74:Location by river was excellent plus plenty of parking space
Review 75:the bathroom was dreadful. I could not stand upright to use the toilet. there was not enough room in the bathroom to dry myself after a shower. I had to go into the bedroom . ridiculous. the menu was borIng, the food was not particularly well cooked. I ordered fried eggs for breakfast and asked that they be softly cooked.they were hard the bread for toast was about 3/4 of an inch thick. Why..? there were no croissants available.
Review 76:the location is idyllic the room was clean the staff generally were helpful polite and cheery.
Review 77:shower too low because of low ceiling over bath which made it very uncomfortable to wash properly. The shower curtain only pulls a small way across bath and water kept going on the floor too.
Review 78:Beautiful location
Review 79:Could hear through the walls.
Review 80:Food was superb and the quality of the product outstanding all local products and tasty selection on menu. Good price for fantastic menu. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite and eager to please.
Review 81:The bedroom walls were so thin that you could hear every word of the conversation next door and we were kept awake by our neighbour snoring all night. You could sit in our bed and feel it vibrating because the wall moved when the people next door walked across the room.
Review 82:Beautiful position. The staff were pleasant and the food good.
Review 83:Not so much a bad experience, but I felt that some of the young bar staff had attitude, also the breakfast staff did not listen to us, i.e. my wife got bacon but did not order it and I only received 1 egg instead of 2, also no vinegar despite asking !
Review 84:The food was good although a little pricey !
Review 85:Bedroom had to many sloping roof sections, especially the shower room hit our heads too many times. It maybe there were better rooms.
Review 86:General feel to bar/ resturants good. Parking close to building and good layout on ground floor
Review 87:shower would not drain away first night and after reporting it,it was still not fixed when we left two days later, also bath filling up with brown water.
Review 88:location.
Review 89:Friendly, helpful staff, great food, comfortable and spacious rooms, location, location, location, bus service every 30 mins. Didn't need to move the car at all. Surprisingly Quiet.
Review 90:My room was right out side of main entrance and was rather noisy with people arriving and leaving the pub. Customers standing and chatting late at night right outside the room door and window. The evening meal was below average, a price exceptable if the portions where proportional. There is no Mobile phone signal at the property and this was not mentioned in the original booking, for business this is not good. The Wi Fi was super slow, Breakfast consisted of a sausage, a piece of bacon, beans, 1/2 a tomato in fact after pricing the ingredients from sainsburys the breakfast cost 83 pence plus over heads.
Review 91:Hair dryer not working; wifi not working in roo
Review 92:Location; staff very helpful; good arrangements for cycle storage; breakfast great and doggie bag so we could take supplies with us on our bike trip
Review 93:Had a meal on the evening and for the cost the food wasn't up to standard. The following morning a full English breakfast was ordered by both and we had quite a wait but when it came!!! - bacon was burnt, sausage cold and undercooked, egg was broken and contained egg shell pieces. Both breakfast were left and a reduction was taken off our final bill.
Review 94:(Room not ready on arrival yet charged extra for the room we were given)
Review 95:Location - unusual rooms like having your own thatched roof chalet - delightful
Review 96:The evening meal was really disappointing. The menu seemed ok but the quality was very poor, wouldn't eat there again
Review 97:Comfortable room and pretty site next to the river
Review 98:Had issues with the Wifi and couldn't get the TV to work. Also the tea was poor at breakfast.
Review 99:Beautiful location by the river, very comfortable, spacious room
Review 100:I love everything about this place! It is so picturesque and quiet. Our upstairs room faced the river...it was wonderful to hear the water through the night. Breakfast was lovely and staff were very helpful. We had two family dinners in the restaurant and the staff were amazing handling our large group. Can't wait to come back.
Review 101:The room although comfortable with our own seating area outside, was a little dark inside. Other than that no complaints!
Review 102:Beautiful setting on the river with our room away from the main building so quiet but within easy reach of the facilities and seating by the river. Ideal for a short stay.
Review 103:Water didn't drain away in the bath for half an hour! Simple case of blocked drain somewhere.
Review 104:Friendly staff, well equipped and comfortable bedroom.
Review 105:Location of room next to entrance - you can hear everyone coming and going including all their conversations as they enter and leave..Very glad we stayed on a 'quiet' night.
Review 106:Beautiful, well kept gardens and especially the hanging baskets. Polite and considerate stafff Nice atmosphere and good food
Review 107:The room was described as quirky and it was that! My husband couldn't stand up in the shower and the huge beam across the room was a real hazard! The restaurant service was extremely slow.
Review 108:Lovely location, near friends who we were visiting. Lovely view from the room window
Review 109:Didn't have time to stay long enough.
Review 110:Excellent menu, delicious food, very attractive view of the river, wildlife & 18th century bridge. Very nice seating area in the garden to accompany the lovely weather that we had
Review 111:Three nights was not long enough!
Review 112:Very friendly hosts, who added a chair to our room, encouraged us to relax, enabled John to find a place to sketch the arched bridge over R Dart.
Review 113:There was nothing to complain about.
Review 114:The location and grounds was lovely and peaceful with the river running through. Very quiet and tranquil The food was first class.
Review 115:The free internet kept dropping out . There was no mobile phone signal this was not the Cots fault and some may think that was a good thing
Review 116:Beautiful position, really pleasant place we would stay there again without hesitation
Review 117:Food in the restaurant was expensive and not very good also most accommodation away from the main building so if rain get wet on the way to breakfast!
Review 118:The accommodation was great, we were returning having stayed there before
Review 119:Had to have sliding door open all night to get air into room as no actual window. Ok as not raining. Meals in restaurent limited. Only had smoked bacon at breakfast which is not to everyones taste
Review 120:Clean comfortable room with own little garden terrace. Super location on banks of river Exe. friendly and helpful staff.
Review 121:Nothing
Review 122:Location ,professional friendly and helpful staff ,warm welcome and friendliness throughout stay ,excellent breakfast ,cleanliness and facilities of room excellent value for money
Review 123:Our room was right near the entrance so when people were leaving they were very noisy and woke us up.
Review 124:It's been quite some time that the description of the accommodation was true. The setting is fabulous, the sound of the water racing over the rocks is soothing. The dinner and breakfast were very enjoyable and filling. The hanging baskets around the verandahs are very pretty.
Review 125:The hosts and staff were very accommodating. A beautiful spot in Devon to stay as a base to explore the rest of Devon and Cornwall. It was so relaxing when we returned, lovely meals available as well.
Review 126:Traveled here to break up a journey, we were very late on arrival but Juanita rang us to check in advance and ensure we could reach out room, which was very reassuring. So it was a pity to arrive so late to not try out the bar as the pub looked very good. The room was comfortable and bathroom very nice and I liked the firmness of the bed. WiFi worked well. In the morning we had a great breakfast before we set off on our journey again.
Review 127:The upstairs room was very small and the bathroom tiny, the carpets needed a good hoover.
Review 128:The setting by the river was great, the evening meals were very good and the breakfast the same.
Review 129:The food left a lot to be desired, especially the lemon sole, stuffed with prawns, tarragon and coriander. It was actually stuffed with packet mix sage and onion stuffing! White wine sauce was congealed, with almost raw onion slices in it.
Review 130:The location was beautiful, which made up for a lot, especially seeing otters in the river!
Review 131:Nothing.
Review 132:The location was truly picturesque. Our room opened into a small private garden and this led straight to the ever flowing river. The staff were helpful and pleasant especially the manageress who was welcoming and always made time for a little chat to make sure we were comfortable. Definitely want to go back again.
Review 133:evening meal was very poor , my husband had rib eye steak , it was very fatty , the waitress asked him which sauce he'd like we thought it came with the meal but were charged over £2, which he wouldn't hv had , I had scampy but again no taste on them or chips .
Review 134:Right by river, we saw otters, fox, a heron and lots of other birds including peacocks across the bridge.
Review 135:There was nothing that we did not like. There are some things that could be improved upon for example a non slip shower mat in every bathroom as a matter of course, we had to request one.
Review 136:The location and the dining room overlooking the river Exe gave us wildlife with every meal. The staff are great and nothing is too much trouble.
