Bickleigh Castle

Bickleigh Castle descritpion
One of Devon's most beautiful wedding venues and bed and breakfast breaks, this 14th century castle nestles in a valley surrounded by 30 acres of lush green land.
The Exe River runs through the estate, offering you the chance to fish or just sit and listen as the river makes its way back to the sea. This is an opportunity not only to be close to nature, but to almost touch history: the chapel was built only 30 years after the Normans landed in Britain in the 11th century and stands intact today as probably the oldest 'living' building in Devon.
Bickleigh Castle offers bed and breakfast and wedding accommodations with 15 bedrooms, including twin, double and family rooms, available in the newly renovated thatched cottages situated around the castle courtyard. All of the bedrooms are tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard.

Reviews for Bickleigh Castle
Review 1:Being on business I like to be able to watch the TV, but found the setup with 2 different controls and having to work through various menus to maybe get a channel very outdated and not at all user friendly. requires a new freeview set up and new tv.
Review 2:Great location, rooms of a very good standard, quiet and comfortable. Breakfast was very good, and the man who prepares very helpful and as required early was all ready at 0730.
Review 3:Wi-fi and any sort of phone reception is pretty patchy here, so if you need it, this may not be the place for you. They didn't do food there as there weren't many of us staying, and as a solo female traveller, and really wanting a glass of wine with dinner, I found the walk back from the pub really dark. Take a torch!
Review 4:The owners are really nice, friendly and helpful, and the bed was really comfortable, the room was warm, the shower was hot, breakfast was ace, and they kindly let me park my car within the grounds as I had a lot of expensive photographic gear (they have a huge car park just around the corner which looks pretty safe - this location is pretty isolated!) The pubs down the road (the Trout Inn and the Fisherman's Cot are about 10 mins walk away and both look homely. I ate in the Fisherman's Cot (monkfish tails with potatoes and vegetables) and the food was delicious. I'm really not a rural person, so taking that into account this was a really nice place.
Review 5:Poor reception. Young man did his stuff but no sign of Maitre D or senior management. Decor poor. Flabby toast. Tawdry red carpet left from 10 weddings ago. Dining room only offering 6/8 seat tables. Pretentious.
Review 6:Location.
Review 7:Lovely,comfortable and well appointed room with two double beds for myself and friend. This felt more like staying as a guest in a country estate than a hotel and the owner was extremely hospitable. Really enjoyed his guided tour of the castle and his enthusiasm for the history of the place was apparent. As it rained for our stay we weren't able to enjoy the lovely gardens but managed a circular walk from the castle.
Review 8:Warning! Breakfast is only served from 08:30 to 10:30. If you need to be somewhere in the morning, you've had it. I was still charged for three breakfasts even though I could not have any as I had booked through a website.
Review 9:Very nice and quiet location.
Review 10:Staying in Bickleigh castle is fantastic! We stayed in the Tudor room and loved the 15th century bed and staircase and the wonderful paintings. We wanted to stay somewhere special for our wedding anniversary and we found it at Bickleigh!
Review 11:This is not the place to be on business. There is only wifi in the lounge - in a separate building and no phone signal - perfect for a holiday though!
Review 12:If I had been on holiday I would have found everything here to my liking - and I hope to return with my husband one day. The quirky and peacful setting calls me back!
Review 13:nothing
Review 14:The atmosphere of a cherished and loved place that welcomed guests to enjoy its atmosphere of peaceful tranquility and sense of history going back a thousand years
Review 15:The only problem in the countryside was mobile phone coverage, I am with vodaphone. O2 was better.
Review 16:Lovely family feel to the place, very friendly staff. We had a delicious cooked breakfast, there was plenty of tea, coffee, toast, yogurt, fruit etc to help yourself too. Very clean rooms.
Review 17:Nothing.
Review 18:I liked the fact that it was a castle and steeped in history. The location right on the River Exe was very pretty and the buildings and rooms were very well maintained. The staff, particularly John, couldn't do enough for you and made you feel very welcome.
Review 19:The accommodation is misleading, should have been called 'Bickleigh Castle Cottages' not 'Bickleigh Castle' as was disappointed in the accommodation. Bathroom needed updating.
Review 20:Set in beautiful countryside, location is beautiful
Review 21:I stayed in the cottage upstairs & my room door was a very short distance from the room door opposite & if there is a noisy family next door you won't get much sleep. The only other thing which let it down was the toothbrush glass had the last guests toothpaste all over it.
Review 22:Bickleigh castle is situated great location & the staff were very welcoming & helpful, there is also free wifi in the communal lounge area. The bar was closed, but they did offer to bring you a drink on room servive, so i decided to walk to one of the local pubs, it's a very short walk, about 15 mins, plus the pub did food. The room was also very comfortable and there was plenty of tea and coffee in the room & a couple of packs of biscuits. If you ran out of any tea or coffee you could help yourself to more in the lounge area.
