Reviews for The Coach and Horses Inn
Review 1:Accommodation & breakfast - booked for 2 nights through booking.com at higher rate due to racing Chepstow, races cancelled on morning 26th so too late to cancel room without a cancellation fee. Stayed 1 night only but had to pay for both nights in full even breakfast on 2nd morning which we weren't there to eat (almost £300). Breakfast - need to ask customer what they like as fry up plated up and I can't stand beans! Rooms in desperate need of modernisation especially the shower
Review 2:Friendly staff
Review 3:I was a little cold and the pub downstairs was noisy but other than this comfortable. It was only for one night as stepping stone into Wales from Essex.
Review 4:Our room was very dimly lit which was not helpful to us with our'mature' eyesight. The foot-board of the bed had sharpcorners which my wife knocked her legs against a couple of timesresulting in bruising.
Review 5:The staff were helpful and friendly and we enjoyed a good breakfast. Thebed was more comfortable than in many higher profile establishments. Thelandlord told us he had recently purchased the premises and wasintending to spend a lot of money on improvements.
Review 6:I'm a bit horrified at what we paid to stay here. I don't feel it was value for money once I saw what we got. We stayed at much nicer places for less on this trip, but can't complain too much as it suited our purposes for one night (family of five in one room, driving distance to see the Severn Bore).
Review 7:We found the staff very welcoming and helpful. They really helped to bump my rating up.
Review 8:Really disappointed in our stay. We booked for a family room with young-ish children (our youngest is 7). The owner didn't bother to tellus that there would be an open mic session, which kept the childrenawake till 11pm and made them really grumpy the next day. Not a goodstart to a weekend away. Also, there was step down into the room, butnot warning sign. I fell and seriously hurt my knees, but the owner wasutterly indifferent when my husband pointed out that some warning signwould be useful.
Review 9:Chepstow is lovely, and the location is good
Review 10:room description not accurate ,expected ensuite, there is no mention of a shared bathroom/toilet facilities .If i had known this i would not have booked the accommodation .The rooms are dated and in need of a make over.|We were told there are plans to remedy this .central heating noisey in room .
Review 11:location good , friendly staff ,good breakfast ,Room was clean
Review 12:Although an old Coaching Inn building, it felt it needed a bit of TLC. It felt a bit pricey after adding the breakfast costs in overall value for money. Was given a small jug of fresh milk for overnight as had no milk in the room, had no fridge so had to put it in sink in cold water to keep it fresh. We had a front room which was a bit noisy with the younger party goers coming out of the nearby nightclub in the early hours.
Review 13:The Coach and Horses is in an ideal location within walking distances to the small town area with all shops bars and restaurants etc.. Small friendly pub with friendly and helpful staff. A nice breakfast. Lovely clean bed linen and towels.
Review 14:The main problem was the rather small bathroom - with nowhere to store your toiletries. Also Chepstow is a very steep town - we may have been better situated more in the middle. The English breakfast was not of that good a quality - not much choice of cereal, the scrambled eggs were almost inedible
Review 15:Very friendly manager - we did not meet any of the other staff
Review 16:Had to share a bathroom which was not as close as I would have liked to the room and therefore did not feel comfortable showering due to having to either walk down the corridor in a towel or hold up the bathroom for other people.
Review 17:Very friendly staff and comfortable bed. Good location as only 10min walk from train station and parking available across the road from the inn.
Review 18:Dodgy front door arriving back late, would have been locked out had it not been for a friendly local taxi driver knowing who to call!
Review 19:Good value for money, friendly staff
Review 20:Room was right above the front door of the bar, lots of noise from customers of the pub, I just considered the room a bit expensive as the position of it offered no peace at all
Review 21:Clean room
Review 22:The staff were really helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. My other half enjoyed the ghost stories! The rooms were simple but perfect for what we needed (a nights stay in easy access of the millennium stadium). Location for the railway station, castle and main town was great. The place has lots of potential and I think once the refurbishment has taken place it will be a really lovely place to stay.
Review 23:Very dated. Room small and dark, too cluttered. Shower very small but worked well. Didn't like wet shower curtain touching me! Owner told us it is being refurbished. But going through bookings.com it was not value for money.
Review 24:Location and manageress excellent. Very helpful and friendly.
Review 25:Very cosy little pub with fantastic ale's on tap, staff were exceptional we felt really welcome. Would recommend this place for people of all age's
Review 26:The bathroom, although clean, smelt a bit damp and was carpeted, which I don't find hygienic. There was no milk for tea/coffee in the room - presumably we could have asked for fresh milk but that wasn't specified anywhere.
Review 27:Great value for money and location close to a pretty walk leading to the castle. The barmaid who welcomed us was very pleasant and friendly. The parking was convenient (although not on-site as such, it was at a property very close). We had a drink at the bar when we returned to the inn and it was a friendly place.
Review 28:Contrary to the fact that we did not have a private toilet and shower, it seemed that the problem did not lie with the inn, but with Booking.com's set up.
Review 29:The staff was very nice,
Review 30:The use of automatic deodorant misters with sickly sweet chemicals made the room smell horrible. Maybe they were trying to cover the smell of a musty old building, but those misters are way worse. I finally set the one from my room in the hall. Within 2 hours the hall reeked too. The mattress has seen better days; two valleys separated by a hill down the middle. Bed frame has an upper "shelf" all the way around that sticks out into the room with sharp corners; a leg-banger for sure. Moldy shower curtain - yuk!
Review 31:This is for the family room: Overpriced for what it is. Room in drastic need of refurbishment. Tiny grubby shower held together with sealant tape. Loads of discarded shower gel bottles wedged down side of shower. Bedside light provided but no socket to plug it in to. Kettle & glasses provided in room, but notice above sink taps saying not drinking water, (could have provided bottled water then?). I appreciate this is a very old building and that it is going to be refurbished, but until then the price for the family room in this state is way too high.
Review 32:Comfy beds. Well located for centre of Chepstow
Review 33:Hotel held an "open mike" night in the bar area on the night we booked accommodation for - we were given no prior warning. The evening went until 11.30pm and it was impossible to sleep through it (our room was directly above the bar). No tourist information was available at the hotel.
Review 34:The staff were friendly and the hotel was close to the town centre.
Review 35:Spotlessly clean and very friendly staff - I didn't spend much time in the place itself as I was mainly out for business but this place was perfect for my brief visit and I would happily stay again.
Review 36:- Very noisy at night. I know it is located in a main road and close to a a nightclub but maybe there should be double glazing. - For the prize we paid I expected better facilities:the bathroom didn't have a lock, had a carpet (which it is no longer seen in modern hotels) and an unappealling shower (I didn't allow my children to use it), the mattress was really hard and the lamp on the right-hand side did not work. I have stayed at boutique hotels in Bath where I paid less than at this hotel. - Breakfast was nice but we only had choice of full English, one glass of juice and no cereal. For £7 I expected a bit better.
Review 37:Good location, close to centre of town. Friendly staff
Review 38:Ensuite was tiny like tryin to get a wardrobe had to use the same towel all week they weren't replaced tv didn't work ended up fixin the Ariel cable my self as the assistant didn't no how and commented it'd been like that f months an to top it all off after getting back at 9 o'clock after a long days work was treated to all the local bands playing their out of tune songs directly below us full volume till after 11 so decided not to waste my money week after an buy a tent an camp out on site week after
Review 39:Bed was comfy
Review 40:Welcoming and friendly hosts ; it's a good honest "pub with rooms" that's a welcome haven at the end of a working day. Quiet road just off the high street, so an easy stroll to a variety of cafes and other similarly friendly local pubs. Pleasant stroll to the nearby Castle in the park. Moments away from M48 so easy to get to & from. Great to be so pet-friendly, too.
Review 41:No bad experience but in need of the update that is happening. All members of staff were first class.
Review 42:The staff, including the owner (present), responded to queries and were each very helpful
Review 43:No food available on Sunday night but there are plenty of options close by so not an issue.
Review 44:Frriendly and Welcoming. I was able to leave bags there while I completed a weekend long bike ride with no trouble. The Pub was busy and friendly on Sunday night and I had a cracking breakfast on Monday morning which set me up for the day.
Review 45:Be warned, this place right to a main throughfare road and as a deaf person, it wasn't a problem. My hearing friend however couldn't sleep due to the thin walls. Noises from next room to ours, pub downstairs, people leaving the pub and the road traffic were clearly audible. Should be avoided if you are a light sleeper.
Review 46:The bed was really soft and comfortable and the owner was really welcoming and helpful! :)
Review 47:Expensive for not including breakfast and current state of room., which was very tired and shower poor, but they are about to have a make over.
Review 48:Friendly staff and owner, and comfortable bed. We liked Chepstow.
Review 49:It is a pub so there was some noise until close time... But after that was absolutely fine so can't really say it's a negative point...
Review 50:The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was great for me (really close to the coach station) and the breakfast was fine.
Review 51:There was a fair bit of noise in my room from the bar downstairs. There was no hot water at 730 am when I wanted to have a bath.
Review 52:Very welcoming and conveniently situated.
Review 53:Décor dated and bathroom down corridor.
Review 54:Basic and cheap accommodation in central Chepstow. Great pub attached. Rooms are not directly over pub so are quiet too.
Review 55:Bed was a tad uncomfortable for me but that's a personal thing and not the fault of the hotel. I'm very sure it's perfect for others just not me coz I'm an awkward bugga
Review 56:Acceptance of my circumstances including a pet with me. plus how I was accommodated way beyond my expectations on such short notice.
Review 57:Nothing! I got a great price and got what I paid for. No complaints
Review 58:The breakfast was excellent. The landlord is a really nice guy who I enjoyed chatting to over breakfast. The bar staff were very helpful when I was booking in despite the pub being full of Six Nations rugby supporters who were on their third match of the day!!
Review 59:It was in a pub, so not really a hotel, and you are reliant on the good will of the staff if you need to return after 11pm.
Review 60:It is very basic accommodation at a very basic price. Also the staff were very accommodating as I was on reunion and wouldn't be back before the place locked up. I
Review 61:The position is perfect for Chepstow and surrounding area. We enjoy the races and will definitely be staying next time we visit. The room was clean and good value for money- it was the cheapest in the area on bookings and had a lovely atmosphere and very helpful and friendly staff. We ate at the pub and the food was good value honest pub grub. Breakfast was also really good. Thank you!
Review 62:This is a superb little 16th century inn. Superb food and staff. Its fab it not modern, its got character. Me and my fiance enjoyed our night stay, no complains. Fresh sheets, clean room, fresh and crisp towels, shower/bathroom had no problems -it serves its purpose. We wouldnt change a thing.
Review 63:The rooms were clean and functional the decor and carpets were dated and shared bathroom was a short trek, my stay was one night and upon leaving for a meeting had an adventure trying to find the means of exit.
Review 64:Walked into a packed bar area and was encouraged to participate in the pub quiz. Made to feel welcome a night of paperwork and phone calls, put on hold to take on the local teams.
Review 65:The landlord and staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our stay was warm and comfortable and breakfast was well presented and beautifully cooked. A great place to stay.
Review 66:How this site affects the general income/bokking of rooms. That needs addressing as if booking.com does not maintain good relationship with places like this, bookings will be made direct . The pub garden/smoking area out the back could do with brightening up. A lovely size bench is provided and cover which is nice but it seemed a bit dull (seen at night).
Review 67:I liked how helpful and knowlegable both Dave and Lisa were, I was not afraid to ask questions both on the phone and face to face. Very contentious owners. I loved the beds as they were super comfy. The fact that shower gel and hand wash was supplied was a lovely touch. The place was so very clean. Good food and breakfast for a fair price. Friendly staff and atmosphere, located in the quite part of the town (beautiful location). A good pub, dog friendly, convienient parking. I had a one night stay and felt like I had had three nights worth of rest and recuperation. The town has a lot to offer, castle (free roaming on the grounds), shop's, restaurant's, pub's, a muesuem and a bag load of history. We will definitely be returning for a longer stay in the future. Thanks so much.
Review 68:Limited parking, but plenty of spaces nearby.
Review 69:Staff were great. Made my granddaughter welcome at a moments notice. No qualms about the dog. Breakfast was fantastic. Good quality products used and cooked to perfection. I will be returning to Chepstow on a regular basis and will use The Coach and Horses again.

Review 72:We were looking for somewhere outside of Bristol to stay and came across the Coach & Horses Inn; we were greeted with the warmest of welcomes and really good ale. The food was fantastic, and the room was of great value and very comfortable. Staff were really sound too! We will definitely be staying here again.
Review 73:Very poor room, I even went home to shower rather than use the one in the room
Review 74:Only the location
