Reviews for The First Hurdle Guest House

Review 1:No reply when we turned up in heavy rain at 4pm; when we went back at 6pm, we were told that breakfast was £10 extra ( not included as we were informed by yourselves) and payment was demanded immediately. Milk was very sparing at breakfast. We were not made to feel welcome.

Review 2:Location

Review 3:television was out of the ark & could only be viewed in black & white or green

Review 4:central location easy to walk to restaurants & bars & places of interest

Review 5:Not a dislike, but a comment: the guesthouse has nor private parking and there is no parking on the street. Very reasonable paid parking can be found at various car parks around the town centre, one just across the road if you can find a space.

Review 6:We stayed at the First Hurdle for Rugby World Cup games in Cardiff; it was a perfect location just 10 minutes from Chepstow Station for trains into Cardiff Central. We also spent a couple of days in the area and again this is a good location to stay for the locality. Chepstow has plenty of places to eat in the evenings. The owner Jane and other staff were friendly and welcoming. The full breakfast was substantial and well-cooked with a choice of cold and hot food.

Review 7:No hot water for showering on Saturday morning, barely tepid. Breakfast limited to 8-9 a.m. though we got a 30 minute concession for Sunday

Review 8:Close by the festival venue for which I was in the town. Friendly staff - comfy bed - great breakfast...

Review 9:Nothing bad; as the guest house doesn't have it's own parking we used a local pay car park. This was reasonable with payment only needed between 9am-5pm for about 7 pounds for the day. Availability of parking spaces may be an issue at times, though there are other car parks not too far away.

Review 10:Simple clean comfort; good breakfast selection, hot breakfast well-cooked; great location for the station for access to Cardiff; good town centre location for pubs, restaurants, shops; easy access to the surrounding countryside.

Review 11:We were made to feel particularly uncomfortable on checking in. Breakfast was very poor compared to every other place we stayed on this walk - cheap sausages, Tesco value jam, etc. Generally the facilities were tired and not a patch on others we stayed in at a similar price.

Review 12:Good location for starting the Offa's Dyke walk.

Review 13:We had a twin room and only one bed made up. We were told at breakfast the second day it had been done but had to sleep two nights without sheets.

Review 14:breakfast very good . cooked fresh.

Review 15:The bedroom was very dated and quite a few things wrong with it, but it will be refurbished in the coming months and the linen is being updated in the next few weeks. Although we found problems, our feedback was listened to and I am sure that should we stay again everything will have been sorted.

Review 16:The communal area that had been updated and was tasteful. Although the bedroom was dated a new ensuite bathroom had been installed which was to a high standard. Breakfast was freshly cooked and good.

Review 17:Contrary to assertions in their advertising, there is no Wifi. If we were visiting from elsewhere in the UK, and had data on our phones, this would not have been a problem. It was an issue for us coming from overseas as we needed internet to continue planning our visit to Wales and to keep in touch with family/business back home. It wasn't just a matter of it not working in the rooms, there was no signal in the lobby or the dinning room. From what I understood, this was not a temporary situation, and no apologies were made for the false advertising.

Review 18:I recommend this Guest House if you don't need Wifi. The location, so close to everything, was great! The rooms were comfortable, the showers modern and with good water pressure, the breakfast hearty (or light and healthy, as you like it). The offer of the use of the dinning room in the evening if you wish to bring in take-out food from one of the several restaurants offering take-away in the immediate vicinity, was very much appreciated.

Review 19:What was rather surprising was that, having confirmed that we'd be arriving early, there was noone there to check us in. A family before us had been waiting for an hour! According to a nearby hotel that my partner went to in desperation after waiting for thirty minutes, this is a regular issue. Apparently "before 12 noon" means shortly after 12. Also, the downstairs toilet was awful, with mushrooms growing on the window frame.

Review 20:The room was clean and the bed comfortable

Review 21:Wifi was available but we're not able to log on for whatever reason with the passcode we were given at the front desk.

Review 22:The rooms were very clean and breakfast was very good. The bed in our room was very comfortable.

Review 23:Room a bit chilly

Review 24:The location was very central. There is no parking outside but there is a public car park close by. £1 for 2 hours, £1.50 for 3 hours etc. Breakfast was adequate and freshly cooked. There are pubs and restaurants within walking distance.

Review 25:On the last night there was no heating and room was freezing. Room itself was compact with just enough room to walk around bed. However bed was comfortable. Unfortunately there was no onsite parking.

Review 26:It was handy for access to our daughters who we were visiting.

Review 27:If staying in winter take some bedsocks. Comfortable beds though

Review 28:Traditional English country guesthouse in a good location and a super breakfast all for a brilliant price.

Review 29:Nothing.

Review 30:The b&b was we appointed in the centre of town. The breakfast offered a great choice and the owner put herself out to make us welcome. ++++

Review 31:Although the owner was away she had arranged everything for us, and we received a warm welcome, we asked for an early breakfast which was provided and was excellent. The room and facilities was perfect for the overnight stay and ideally situated for the local pub where we had our evening meal

Review 32:The loft room has no door or even curtain between the sleeping area and the bathroom area. You pass the bathroom area on entering the room! And if you sit down, you have to be at the end of the settee furthest from the toilet, or avert your eyes.

Review 33:The loft room is spacious. The guest house is quite close to a modestly-priced public car park. You can pop out to the car almost as readily as if it were on the same site.

Review 34:The so called 'full English' was one tomato, one egg, some burnt bacon and the tiniest cheapest foulest sausage and a nasty hash brown. The converted loft room had mould on the ceiling and holes everywhere. Photos can be provided of the room.

Review 35:Bed was cosy.

Review 36:Decor could do with a facelift ~ not in terms of cleanliness, more in terms of the style of decoration.

Review 37:Fantastic cooked breakfast ~ one of the best I've had at any price. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 38:The room was adequate for a single night's stopover but I wouldn't have wanted more than one night there. The sound-proofing was non-existent between rooms and the decor looked tired and well-past it's sell by date. I was not impressed that the cereals on offer at the breakfast were very limited and there was no juice available. We were not offered a pot of tea and the toast was delivered almost as an after-thought!

Review 39:The location was very convenient for local shops, pubs and restaurants.

Review 40:Hardly anything, only two commentaries: - no hotel-owned car-park -> 30m away is a short-stay-car park, that is free over night but because of that often very busy, 300m away is a free Long-time car-park, also very busy - in my ground-floor-room facing the street I could not open the window!

Review 41:Nearly everything! - great Location: situated directly nearby the old St.Mary-Church, five mins walk to the Castle, city-centre, bus- and Train- Station - clean rooms with bathroom and TV, nice furniture -very friendly staff -breakfast included -Tesco 2mins away -very good for People without car

Review 42:The room was was quite small, but adequate for a single person staying for a few nights.

Review 43:It is near to all the Restaurants, and tourist attractions. Good road and rail links and near to some lovely countryside to enjoy. The breakfast was well cooked and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Review 44:Room and bathroom very cold, no heat to dry the one bath towel given for the three nights.

Review 45:Location excellent. The staff were friendly, tea at breakfast very good.Shower always good and hot.

Review 46:Honestly, this is probably the worst accommodation I have stayed in, and I have stayed in a lot, with a lot of variety. The room smelt damp and mouldy, the bed headboard looks to have never been changed with garish aged dirt streaks, and there was some really nasty residual build up in the toilet, just to mention a few. The room was also freezing cold, I had no remote for the tv (although I was brought one that didnt work later on), and in tottality, the room just didnt look or feel clean - the number on rule for B&B's/hotels. I was really disappointed by this accommodation and cannot see how anyone (that is the staff and owvers) would look at this room and say 'I'd like to stay here'. I bet their accommodation isn't of such a poor standard. It wasnt worth the money I paid and no, I would not stay ere again. Sorry.

Review 47:The coffee and breakfast were ok, although even this I feel could have/should have been much better. The staff were friendly enough, but not enough to compensate for the unpleasantness of my stay.

Review 48:Tierd furnishing (broken bed, manky head rests and stained bed sheets), tiny shower, light fittings old or missing, plus odd curtain rails.

Review 49:Good placing for town centre and attractions ie Castle, museum.

Review 50:The place did look a bit worn out and the bedroom smelled a little bit of damp. It would have been nice to have had a few biscuits on the tea tray and to have been offered a choice of beans or tomatoes with our breakfast. When it came to paying we were charged more than the amount we booked for on booking.com. It was only by a small amount so I didn't argue but I am unsure of the reason for this?

Review 51:We stayed the night as we were going to a concert in the castle so this b&b was conveniently located near by also close to the main high street. Our room was small but clean and tidy and the bed was really comfy so we slept well. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 52:We had a room that overlooked the road outside and because of the central location on the Saturday evening the "late night revellers" did wake us up!!

Review 53:The location was excellent and the breakfast was really good.

Review 54:No parking at hotel but pay & display car park across the road (chargeable Mon - Sat 09:00-17:00)

Review 55:We were able to check in early at 1pm as our room was ready. Friendly staff. Great central location & good value for money.

Review 56:Everything was tired. We understand how difficult it is to keep a premises like this fresh but the place felt like it was falling into disrepair. Slanting floors, bubbled paint on walls, flaky paint on back window, unclean-looking curtains, room had not been aired, initial foul smell from the toilet (which disappeared soon after) merit particular attention.

Review 57:The location. The fact that we were able to store our bicycles in the back garden. The muesli at breakfast.

Review 58:Staff poorly trained. Did not keep the breakfast display table stocked. Several guests had to ask for juice glasses. Juice was not kept full. Breakfast was a dry affair with food that had been pre-cooked for a long time.

Review 59:Very friendly and welcoming

Review 60:We booked a double bed and we got twin beds. The room was very small. The bathroom was tiny.

Review 61:Chepstow is a great town. The relieving manageress was very helpful. They did breakfast for us at 7:30am so we could get away on our walk.

Review 62:The meat produce (sausage and bacon) at breakfast was has bad as it could possibly be.

Review 63:Typical bed and breakfast and you get what you pay for

Review 64:Nothing not to like, really enjoyed about stay

Review 65:Beds were comfy and staff were friendly . Breakfast was really good

Review 66:Nice small guesthouse at the heart of the town and really close to the castle.

Review 67:nil

Review 68:Great location in town centre, close to a car park, friendly staff, great breakfast.

Review 69:Very convenient fir The Drill Hall venue and the station. Close to town too. All in all a good place to stay.

Review 70:Great location, nice hospitality and great breakfast.

Review 71:The bed was uncomfortable and the duvet too small.

Review 72:Location.

Review 73:Room,.facilities, breakfast, staff were welcoming. Central location.

Review 74:Best access to the center of Chepstow, Owner and staff pleasant, surroundings with homey touch inside and out. Sorry I was only there one night.

Review 75:Room carpet not hoovered and musty smell. Needs a bit of a revamp

Review 76:Great location friendly staff and owner great breakfast

Review 77:We had a problem with the alarm going off and not being able to contact the owner, but this has now been amicably resolved.

Review 78:Only negative is we couldn't book in before 4 o'clock.

Review 79:Ideal for a one night stop over for party

Review 80:just a little dated

Review 81:great location 2mins from everything , great staff, big rooms and good breakfast

Review 105:The location was ideal for the town and local attractions. Me and my wife were on a leisure break and found the Guest House very peaceful. We will be staying here again.

Review 106:Can't say anything against the place really. I think I got more than I paid for.

Review 107:First rate guest house, literally just a few minutes walk from the town centre. Very old place built in a terrace with Alms houses just a few doors away. Room was spacious with a reasonable bathroom. Great staff and a substantial breakfast.
