Reviews for Marston Lodge Hotel

Review 1:The bed needs replacing. Old mattress and not very comfortable and the pillows were flat. En-suite was very old fashioned and needs updating. Although we didn't have a problem, owner has strong views and shares them which may not be to everybody's liking.

Review 2:Cooked breakfast was good. The location on the hill provided good views from the room overlooking Minehead.

Review 3:Everything - The service, the room, the friendliness, the food, the dogs. Everything was perfect except the weather and that wasn't too bad., we are sure that if Alex and Naomi could have improved the weather they would have, they did everything else. No wonder they have a certificate of excellence.

Review 4:Room information could have contained time of breakfast, method of payment for room. Little disappointed to find I had a shower and not a bath!

Review 5:Nice sized room with good view. Centrally located.

Review 6:Parking not great Owner wasn't very approachable and was rude Room not ready on arrival Although breakfast was good, did not have the option to change cooked breakfast from original order.

Review 7:We are still little bit puzzled by the overbearing proprietor Alex who seemed a bit put out by having guests. We felt as though we were unwelcome visitors who had dropped in at an inappropriate time. Although advertising meals, on both nights we were iencouraged to eat elsewhere and we are still unsure as to whether about was a bar on offer. Our bathroom needed a really good scrub and the bed was uncomfortable. Alex's jaundiced view of the world and his strong opinions were very offputting!

Review 8:Attractive well furnished with lovely view. Free parking

Review 9:The hill on the way back from the town (we cheated and got a taxi!)

Review 10:Alex had so much knowledge and passion about the area and really seemed to want his guests to enjoy their stay. The excellent breakfasts were freshly cooked to order and really filling.

Review 11:Friendly family atmosphere with excellent knowledge of surrounding area. Also breakfast was a great start to the day, free range eggs etc.with good choice and opportunity to vary breakfast if requested.

Review 12:We very much appreciated the friendliness and helpfulness of the proprietor. Extremely knowledgeable about the area, he gave us excellent recommendations for touring Exmoor and packed a delicious picnic for our enjoyment.

Review 13:Room 9 where we stayed could do with a wardrobe, a couple of hangars on the back of the door is insufficient.

Review 14:Staff superb, breakfast as good as I have had, honesty bar a really nice touch. Views from hotel are also superb, although the hill leading up was hard, only attempted once !!

Review 15:Difficulty in accessing the hotel by people who have limited mobility. Beware balcony is for ALL guests not attached to any one room!

Review 16:Excellent breakfast knowledgeable staff good location for Exmoor

Review 17:Having stayed here several times it never fails to deliver. The owners are friendly and knowledgeable with nothing being to much trouble. The furnishings are wonderfully in keeping with the building which combines to create a pleasant atmosphere.

Review 18:our host - Alex was full of life and wonderfully generous with his info on the town and surrounding area. loved the hotel itself - felt at home there and welcomed. we also loved the full english breakfast - kept us fueled for the whole day!

Review 19:We had no access at all to wifi in the hotel. We needed wifi so we had to go down to the local pub to access wifi.

Review 20:A very comfortable place in a stunning setting. Our host gave us great advice on what to do and where to go.

Review 21:friendly staff, owner very knowledgeable and helpful about the area, lovely quiet location, fascinating pictures, paintings and artefacts all around the house, very comfy and homely, very good breakfast.

Review 22:Loved everything.

Review 23:Friendly and helpful owners, who made us feel very welcome. Lots of useful information on local area and places to visit on Exmoor which we would probably have missed otherwise. Excellent breakfasts!

Review 24:Leaving deffo did not want to go home

Review 25:Hotel is stunning with amazing views. We stayed in room 4 and wow what a room with a view .host could not of helped us anymore if he tried and i have to say breakfast was to die for and massive

Review 26:No bad experience, but a small wardrobe for hanging clothes required.

Review 27:Everything from the friendly welcome, lovely room, cleaned daily, with excellent views and en suite shower room with toiletries, TV and selection of teas/coffee/chocolate with biscuits. Also provided with a wonderful breakfast each day and information of places to visit/ eat.

Review 28:Going home cannot wait to go back there

Review 29:The knowledge and enthusiasm of the owner Alex exposing the amazing beauty of Exmoor .Really large comfortable bed Views from our room of the surrounding coast and countryside Great well cooked breakfast eack morning

Review 30:The high up location gave great view of the area. The owner, Alex, is a mine of useful information regarding the local attractions. Great breakfast.

Review 31:Breakfast let it down a little. Canned tomatoes etc

Review 32:Location is fine, set amongst other lovely properties with a great view of the town. We had a spacious, gracious room.

Review 33:Loved the decor and the little touches The hosts were really lovely and help us plan routes we never knew existed so saw beautiful country side and villages . I would recommend this place

Review 34:The Marston Lodge is set in a lovely part of the town , with spectacular views across Minehead , the welcome was warm and friendly , my room was clean and comfortable . Alex had a wealth of local knowledge which I found very helpful too

Review 35:Very welcoming, beautiful house, large comfortable room with view across Minehead. Spotlessly clean and a fabulous breakfast to start the day. Nothing was too much trouble and had we stayed longer we certainly would have made use of Alex's vast knowledge of the area and surrounding walks.

Review 36:Bed was just a normal double and was too small for 2 people. Now daysthis size bed is used as a single in twin bedded rooms.Duvet was too small for bed (or cover was too small for duvet which made it an uncomfortable experience) and once two bodies were beneath it there were gaps around the sides and bottom. To compensate for this, two throws were on top of the duvet but were heavy and hot. Room was well decorated but shower room was tired and very small. It needed a complete refurbisment. Light over mirror was not working. Wardrobe had an exposed part underneath and was very dusty. The kettle and tea making equipment was housed in a cabinet nowhere near a plug socket and everything had to be taken to the other side of the room. Breakfast was OK but the only choice was a full English or components of that. No kippers or other breakfast items were on the menu. This was mot the case in other small hotels/B&B we had visited. Tea and toast had to be made by guests.

Review 37:House tastefully decorated. Size of room good.

Review 38:The double bed in our room was very narrow and not the most comfortable.

Review 39:Great view, fantastic hosts. Do not go touring in Exmoor without asking the host for advice!

Review 40:Marston Lodge is well situated for exploring Minehead and the area. The facilities are first class, with a great sense of welcome and comfort. Great views across Minehead and the surrounding area. Room of generous size and well equiped. The shower was excellent, not the frequent small enclosure and trickle of water. First class breakfast

Review 41:tinned tomatoes on the breakfast!! my husband loves them I only like fresh so would not have ordered them if I had known. such a little thing!

Review 42:very helpful owner with regards to local information. honesty bar!!

Review 43:Nothing to dislike

Review 44:Having just returned from Marston Lodge we can recommend a stay there to any one, the views are fantastic the owners are friendly and helpful, a very good breakfast, and the house and bedrooms are warm and comfortable, would stay again

Review 45:Everything was fine. The walk back up to the hotel after an evening in Minehead was not as steep as previous reviewers had suggested.

Review 46:Owner extremely knowledgeable about the local area and provides visitors with great ideas for making the most of their stay. The breakfast was always quality food freshly cooked and a great start to the day.

Review 47:Absolutely nothing!

Review 48:Hotel's location with great views over Minehead Bay and surrounding countryside. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Full breakfast was provided and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Review 49:Nothing - All good

Review 50:This hotel is the perfect choice for anyone who is bored with the standard chain hotels. The owners are very welcoming and the views from the balcony are fantastic. The rooms are nicely decorated with period furniture and breakfast was good.

Review 51:There was not much wrong with this hotel. Just be aware that the hillside location, while giving excellent views, means its a bit of a climb back out of town if you're walking. We drove but found easy parking so it was no problem.

Review 52:This was an excellent choice for us. The view from our room was tremendous, the room was great, our hosts were friendly and helpful, suggesting places to go and visit during our stay, and the breakfasts were all we could want. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting either a short stay or a longer one.

Review 53:Upon arrival at Marston Lodge, we were struck by the traditional decoration and a friendly welcome which made us feel at home straight away. Our room was clean and comfortable, accompanied by a modern en-suite. The hotel facilities included a spacious breakfast room, quirky snooker room, homely living room, and an "honesty bar". The upstairs balcony offered great views of Minehead and the beach front. The cooked English breakfasts were fantastic and were made from locally sourced ingredients! On our first morning, hotel owner Alex took time to generously equip us with a map of Exmoor with which he annotated, suggesting places to see and things to do in order to maximise our time there. It was our first time in Minehead and with great thanks to Marston Lodge, it won't be our last.

Review 54:Having to leave.....

Review 55:We liked everything about this hotel. The building and its decor are individual and attractive, and the owners clearly know and love the area going out of their way to help patrons find their perfect day out. The perfect spot was out on the balcony looking over Minehead from up on the hill. Peace quiet and a beautiful view whichever way you looked and the perfect place to read the owners history of the property contained in the information folder-I would recommend taking the trouble, it is very interesting and brings the place even more to life! Breakfast was delicious, especially the home grown eggs! Mother and son(a typical 16 year old)-we both had a heavenly time.

Review 56:Welcoming reception, excellent decor and location and a particular highlight for us was the tour around Exmoor provided enthusiastically by Alex our host.

Review 57:No blackout curtains so impossible to sleep in. Air con would have been welcomed. Water in shower didn't drain out. Bedspread was awful. Fountain outside window disturbed sleep as window required to be left open for fresh air.

Review 58:Tip the dog and towels.

Review 59:Warm and friendly welcome to a hotel which provided a comfortable base to explore Exmoor and the surrounding area. Lovely views from our room, great gardens and balcony - and excellent breakfasts.

Review 60:Marston Lodge is just a lovely place to stay and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a beautiful period house, elegantly and comfortably furnished with a sense of coming home as you step through the door. It's lovely and clean with attractive gardens. The owners, Alex and Naomi, and their family made us feel entirely welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Service was efficient, friendly and warm. Never over the top, always glad to help. Alex has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and happily supplies maps on which he marks routes designed for individual guests based on their interests and needs, with points of interest which a stranger to the area would be unlikely to find unaided. We took advantage of this and had some brilliant days out, for which we thank him. Our room was gorgeous with huge windows affording stunning views of the sea, the town below and the rolling Somerset countryside. Most important, the bed was supremely comfortable and the en suite stylish and spotlessly clean. Food was faultless - breakfast was delicious and fresh items locally sourced. The usual arrangement is b&b, but there is an option to eat in if you arrange this with Naomi in the morning. There is no set menu, just talk to her about what you like and let her cook for you. We did this on the last evening. Had we known just what an amazing cook she is, we wouldn't have eaten anywhere else. Really, try for yourself.

Review 61:There was nothing to dislike.

Review 62:The Hotel had stunning views and was clean and comfortable with a great shower. Breakfast was delicious. The owner was very attentive towards guests and had a broad knowledge of local and surrounding areas. All in all a very enjoyable stay. We would recommend this Hotel.

Review 63:Having to wait until 5 o'clock to check in, only single opening window in room, no lift (but owner offered to carry some luggage for us)
