Reviews for Castle View
Review 1:No bad expeirience
Review 2:On arrival the owner met us and was very helpful and pleasant. We went to the races and when we came back all the staff were friendly and helpful we went out for an evening meal and returned socialised for a while then went to bed,the bed was comfortable room was warm and quiet. We would recommend the Castle View and we will be booking again.
Review 3:The weather! We were in the UK during the historic flooding in late December, 2015. Can't quite blame the B&B for that.
Review 4:Everything about this B&B was perfect for our short stay in Chepstow - the staff was friendly accommodating, and helpful, the room was comfortable, quiet, and spacious (plus a great view of the castle!), and the location was excellent.
Review 5:No bar / evening food told they deal only as a bed and breakfast at this time of year not a hotel eg no room service as advertised, no free priority drink as advertised, I would have rather known in advance
Review 6:Friendly staff clean, old building and unique expect creaking it's the character and age ! Good local food delivery great fresh breakfast
Review 7:I was welcomed by a fantastic young man called Matthew.... looked after me extremely well. Carried my trolley to the room and explained everything fully.
Review 8:Our room was grubby compared to the rest of the hotel, certainly more shabby than chic. Cobwebs in 3 of the 4 corners, someones dirty glass next to an unused clean one. The wall facing the bed was not nice to look at, 2 wall plugs from where tv was moved, 2 pictures which did not fit their frames, from a charity shop? The bathroom was very dated.
Review 9:Good location. The hotel looks nice from the outside and when you first enter the area is good. Nice little bar. Breakfast room was not bad and the food was adequate but rather tasteless.
Review 10:The room was a lovely suite, staff were attentive a really nice.breakfast was excellent cooked to perfection . definitely be taking family next time to enjoy this hotel and surrounding area.
Review 11:Wonderful view of Chepstow Castle from our room.Hotel full of character and old world charm. Very friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. Great value for money
Review 12:We arrived after dark and did not realize the car park was a pay and display; greeted the next morning with a parking ticket on our windscreen! One must pay between 9am and 5pm.
Review 13:Nice breakfast, short walk into the town centre.
Review 14:Breakfast not available after 9.00 a.m. Bar not available mid to late evening. No evening meal available. Room had bath with only trickle of water from tap and shower hose linked to tap but only partially tiled with no screen. Had to wash using sink - a little primitive. Business run for convenience of owner not residents
Review 15:Very handy with bar available on arrival and friendly owner.
Review 16:The place is advertised as if there are evening meals available, this is not the case. It was fine for us as we planned to explore the area and we would highly recommend the Shangri-la Chinese restaurant ( who have a delicious gluten free menu) but for anyone hoping to stay and eat, it is not possible.
Review 17:The staff were very helpful. At breakfast there was plenty to choose from and cooked to order. I have ceoliac disease and they supplied me with gluten free bread.
Review 18:It was quiet and very comfortable. Both close to the railway station and the centre of town, with a lovely view of the castle, it was convenient for the museum, restaurants, pubs and shops. And the staff were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the Castle View.
Review 19:Location opposite and a stroll to the castle. Easy cheap parking opposite. Spacious room with anteroom and modern bathroom. Excellent cooked breakfast. Friendly waitress.
Review 20:Had been told by a colleague that the food was very good. When I booked in I was informed it was simply a B&B and no longer a hotel. The room I had was quite small and the shower not very impressive.
Review 21:Nice Old Building with plenty of character with a great view of the Castle. Excellent breakfast and good location for the town & river.
Review 22:Uncozy breakfast room.
Review 23:Great location. Right across the road from the castle (hence the name of the hotel) cozy ,refurbished rooms and bar. Friendly innkeeper.
Review 24:Could hear the water tank dripping through the night. Told does not do food although it said so on booking.com informed it would say this on booking confirmation. But that was too late
Review 25:Nice looking building with nice garden
Review 26:Everything good
Review 27:Nice welcome very handy having car park opposite very pleasant surroundings and unlike most hotels reaspnable bar prices. Lovely breakfast
Review 28:Only small fault, shower water had a pressure balance issue required constant adjustment. I
Review 29:Excellent value for money, clean and adequate breakfast included. Friendly attentive staff.
Review 30:The breakfast was microwaved pre cooked food mostly heated past its best.
Review 31:The view of the castle and good location to town and also the riverside bars.
Review 32:Location. Could walk around easily. Cheap public car park directly opposite. Staff were very helpful. Bar and restaurant were under renovation, but they still offered us a welcome drink.
Review 33:Floor was covered in dog hair from previous occupants. We haven't anything against pets staying but make such you have a good hoover to pick up animal hair before next guests arrive...
Review 34:Nice view of castle, dood choice at breakfast that was freshly cooked and well presented.
Review 35:The rooms are quite dated with respect to decor. We didn't like the excessive use of red plush fabric and red throw pillows. White would've been fresher- feeling.
Review 36:Friendly welcome from night manager, lovely waitress at breakfast times, located right opposite the beautiful Chepstow castle. This hotel is VERY OLD and has creaky, weird twisty staircases and a wee back garden area.
Review 37:Over-heating of room (room 4) by corridor radiator; when this was reported, and it was asked that the radiator be switched off in future the attitude of the lady was "too bad can't do it, it heats the water"
Review 38:Clean, basically-equipped room; generally friendly, helpful staff (swift remedy of noise problem). Well-situated for access to M4/M5, and for tourism - Chepstow castle, Wye Valley etc.
Review 39:They were in the middle of refurbishment. Only bed and breakfast. No other food facilities.
Review 40:The location was good for Castle and town. Near to river ,wine bar and pub. parking good directly opposite.
Review 41:Not a negative comment as it was expected but we feel it should be mentioned that the walls/ceiling are quite thin. Didn't bother us as we were up and about for breakfast but perhaps if you're after a lie in then the sound might bother you.
Review 42:Fantastic hotel in an great location. The room was separate from the pub, through a little garden and down the end. The room itself was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The pub was great, freshly decorated and even included a pub dog called Lily! Expect to duck if you're on the tall side as the doorways are quite small but that's a general rule that applies to Chepstow. The cooked breakfast was very nice, my partner claimed it was one of the best cooked breakfasts he was ever had. We had Sunday lunch there too which was better than we expected. It's also worth trying the ale they have on tap. The staff were beyond polite, helpful and friendly, especially the woman who serves breakfast.
Review 43:Not sure if it has changed owners or not but it seemed different this time. When we arrived the carpet was being changed and we were left with the faint impression that our check in was inconveniencing the gentleman that checked us in as he was busy with the carpet change. While we are aware it is a very old hotel (hence why we chose to stay there) the bed was rather uncomfortable - think it is time for new mattress in that room. Also the breakfast while being okay, was not as fabulous as the one we had enjoyed previously - the service was pleasant though.
Review 44:Location is excellent - we both love Chepstowe Castle and chose this hotel as we had enjoyed breakfast there before and wanted to stay this time. Loved the fact that I could open the window and look directly at the Castle from the room.
Review 45:There was mold on the bottom of the shower curtain and the bar closes at 9:30 in the evening and they don't serve evening meals so we had to go elsewhere in the evenings.
Review 46:Liked nearly everything about the hotel and we have rebooked to stay again
Review 47:The only thing was the time it took for hot water to reach the room after the tap was turned on. This was only a minor fault.
Review 48:After a 9 hour drive from Fife to collect a Welfare Beagle the owner was most interested in our task ahead. We had the Cottage Suite (room 9) which was very roomy with comfortable lounge chairs in which to relax. Breakfast was excellent. Good choice of cereals and fresh fruit and the cooked meal was as good as I have had with top quality ingredients. The staff were friendly and efficient.
Review 49:Brilliant location, opposite Chepstow Castle in atmospheric part of the town. Very friendly welcome. I arrived part way the afternoon asking to leave my bike and was shown my room and somewhere to put the bike overnight. Beautifully presented breakfast buffet with cooked meals available.
Review 50:Uneven floors but there is work in progress I'm sure they willvget round to it
Review 51:I liked the location the style the room was spotless there is quite a lot of work to be done on the property but the bathroom was brand new as was the bed The staff were lovely very friendly and polite and breakfast was amazing fair play to them I stayed as I went to s concert there I hope I have reason to stay again
Review 52:Friendly and helpful staff. Easy access to the town. Lovely big and comfortable room. Mix-up regarding the room booking was sorted out quickly. Nice to have fresh milk with room refreshments. Children were welcomed.
Review 53:I had a bit of trouble shutting the window and had to get help with it.
Review 54:A nice pub/guesthouse. Comfortable little room and fast wifi. Very good breakfast.
Review 55:surprised at a hotel having no dining facilities although they made helpful suggestions as to alternatives. Facilities in Chepstow limited ,but town pleasant. No blackout to windows and external lights shining through.
Review 56:Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast good. Very close to Castle if that is your requirement.
Review 57:The shower although fully functioning could have been hotter. My only criticism.
Review 58:Very clean and facilities were fully adequate for our needs. Staff were friendly and professional. Good base from which to explore the locality.
Review 59:Not bad just the room was as previously explained very tired. It was clean but in need of a refurb which the Manager told me was about to happen.
Review 60:A hard review to rate because the hotel is in the middle of updating their facilities. I liked the atmosphere, the friendly staff, the secret garden behind with it's pond, and the really peaceful sleep I had. The breakfast was top class and the lady who served it provided gluten free toast and was faultless.
Review 61:the shower in room 11 was only a trickle the kitchen below put extractor fan on about 7.00 am continental breakfast was cereal, yoghurt & toast not good!
Review 62:Room in poor state of decoration. Biggest let down -- unclean, dust/fluff on curtains, lampshades and elsewhere. Tea tray not cleaned for weeks??!! (daren't stay for breakfast, kitchen may not be clean). Shower no power and tray drained very slowly, pipe blocked? Advertising evening meal outside the hotel and online but not available.
Review 63:Location in quiet part of town although centre, river and castle close by. Asked for and given £25 discount because of "dislikes" reported to management.
Review 64:One curtain pole missing so quite a lot of light coming in during the night.
Review 65:Location, good views over the Castle. Very close to the river and lovely walks. Easy to get to from the railway station.
Review 66:The hotel is within a few minutes walk of the train station, the town centre and the Castle. The staff I spoke to were really helpful and friendly. I was able to book a single room as I was travelling alone instead of having to book and pay for a double which I didn't need.
Review 67:Proprietor not happy we had got a cheap rate through booking.com! Wanted to charge extra £8 for dog and reluctant to give us breakfast at the price we booked. Very bad attitude though all expressed with a smile to cover his rudeness. We will never return mainly due to this.
Review 68:The location
Review 69:Good location, opposite castle, a few yards from river, close to town centre and ten minutes walk from station. Comfortable, spacious room (I had room 8, family room on top floor). Quiet (but there may be some traffic noise in front rooms when (if?) the old bridge re-opens.
Review 70:rooms are in need of refurbishment, the beer garden outside could be a lovely place if tidied up, the breakfast was continental and a full English cost more.
Review 71:the location is fabulous.
Review 72:cooked breakfast was extra and not really worth it. rooms needed updating although bathroom was modern
Review 73:old hotel so a bit quirky. good location for town and castle
Review 74:Stopped evening meals but with the choices in town you'll never be stuck for a place to eat
Review 75:Comfort, value and location are all spot on, lovely old building to stay in
Review 76:Continental breakfast selection was a little disappointing.
Review 77:Very welcoming hosts who were eager to please. Excellent evening meal at a very reasonable price with impeccable service.
Review 78:The narrow stairs to second floor not good for someone with heart condition. Wouldn't stay again without guarantee of lower floor
Review 79:Friendly staff Location
Review 80:I stayed in the single bedroom in the attic. Weather was hot and the room was stuffy. 24/25 c overnight which made sleeping difficult. Need a fan in this room on such occasions! Wifi only in lounge. Pub closed Thursday eve.
Review 81:Convenient location and good value. Close to castle and riverside walks and pubs.
Review 84:Great location of hotel with views onto the Castle and quiet at night. Nice sized room. Breakfast was tasty and I ate at the restaurant several times and always delicious.
Review 85:None.
Review 86:My room was comfortable and well kept. Location of the Inn was great. The dining room was cozy and traditional, and the food was excellent. Best of all was the helpfulness and friendliness of the entire staff.
Review 87:Clean and comfortable room, with an extremely comfortable bed, in a characterful old building directly opposite Chepstow Castle. Excellent dinner in the restaurant.
Review 88:Shower was just a trickle not good after a days cycling, food in the restaurant was overpriced in hindsight we would have been better served wandering into town and looking around the numerous food outlets there
Review 89:Splendid room with all facilities, felt very comfortable
Review 90:Breakfast - stated continental, but this did not even include pastries. Cooked breakfast was at an additional cost (unlike other places in the same area where it was included).
Review 91:Location Friendly staff
Review 92:Needs a refurb all round, clean but tired. Tea and coffee facilities very poor, water tasted odd and powdered milk is a bit rubbish.
Review 93:Friendly, well located, spacious room, nice pub, quiet
Review 94:I've stayed here 5 times now and it is one of my favourite places to stay. I work away a lot and sometimes find it difficult to find decent accommodation. The staff are really polite and friendly without being intrusive. The rooms have always been v clean, well presented and comfy. I didn't eat in the hotel but I believe the food is good.
Review 95:a cooked breakfast should have been included in the price should have been advised that pets were allowed in the b and b.there were three dogs there when we stayed..
Review 96:friendly staff.
Review 97:Stayed for two nights in the cottage suite, well worth the extra, all the staff made you very welcome even Lilly the dog, excellent breakfast and nothing was to much trouble .
Review 98:Our room was at the top,the stairs were steep and narrow, fire doors hard to open. The toilet was very cramped.
Review 99:We liked the staff, food and bar eating area.
Review 100:Having to pay extra for breakfast in the morning. Apparently a continental one was included, always thought Chepstow was on the border between England and Wales not France and Germany. Breakfast, in whatever guise should be included within the price.
Review 101:Nice setting as you walk in through the door.
Review 102:Room wasn't great, carpets worn, tiles around bath cracked, broken rusty radiator in en-suite, very bouncy mattress. Woken up at 1:30am by very loud TV in staff accommodation above our room
Review 103:Friendly staff, good breakfast
Review 104:Compared to the other 10 hotels/B&Bs we stayed at this trip, the poorest value for money. Staff don't really care it seems. Really got the feeling they didn't really care if we were there or not. Didn't do anything to make it worth the 80 pounds per night we paid. No dinner served on sundays, which actually worked out OK as we ended up next door at the castle inn where the meal and manager were wonderful. No parking provided and hotel doesn't pick up on the 4 pound parking fee in front of the hotel. No amenities in room, poor appearance and maintence. Needs an overhaul of both facilities and management.
Review 105:Location, period building
Review 106:Very nice people good to support local businesses we think . Great to be able to take the dogs without paying silly supplements -worth a lot to us . Second time we've stayed -love it
Review 107:Although brief our stay was very enjoyable. The staff were friendly and accommodating and our room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful. Lovely location right next to the castle and a short drive to the shops and town centre (or a fairly steep walk if that doesn't phase you) Definitely recommended.
Review 108:Continental Breakfast is only offered within your cost of staying at Castle View Hotel. I would have liked the fact of having the choice of a cooked breakfast to be included, not just a Continental, (along with tea or coffee?) Usually, if breakfast is included with your stay at a hotel, you generally have the choice of a cooked breakfast. This wasn't the case at Castle View Hotel. Instead, if cooked breakfast is required, it is added to your bill? I would have liked to have breakfast (as a whole) included within the Room rate of my stay and the choice whether or not I wish to include breakfast when booking my Room?
Review 109:The location of the hotel was perfect. You have the view of Chepstow Castle that overlooks the river. Even though the hotel is located on a road, it was still quiet. It is a very old hotel that has character. You have a feel of being more at home than being in a hotel. My Partner and I laughed when welcomed by a small, friendly dog sitting on a chair behind the checking in/out desk! We were asked if we'd like our luggage to be carried to our room? (No, not by the dog.) You still have a large rear garden to have a stroll if you like? My Partner and I liked the fact the town centre is merely a 5 minute walk, also the Museum is only a "stone's throw" away from the hotel. Local people are friendly and always give a warm welcome. Chepstow has magnificent views and to return to a cosy, warm hotel with friendly staff at hand to meet whatever needs you may have is always piece of mind. We were served good ales and had well presented, good meals. Our room was always warm, clean and tidy, with adequate facilities. Our bed was extremely comfortable, allowing a good sleep. My Partner and I definitely intend to go back to visit Chepstow in the future and will be booking to stay at Castle View Hotel again.
Review 110:Told on arrival that there was no evening meal as only a few guests staying. room cramped - had to move chair in font of door to open wardrobe. Dimly lit with 25 watt bulb too dark to type on laptop.Continental breakfast a joke - cereal, juice, tea and toast...
Review 111:Good food .All fresh and excellent menu. Staff were brilliant all the time. Ancient coaching inn with atmosphere and fabulous views. Castle is opposite as is car park. Child friendly.
Review 112:Nothing
Review 113:Castle View is in a great location very near the town centre but not right on top of noisy bars so is quiet at night.I stayed for one night as I was going to the races and would definitely recommend this hotel, very pleasant and helpful staff and a nice breakfast
Review 114:The only down side to this hotel is the fact you have to park in the car park across the road, so therefore make sure you have a ticket on by 9am.
Review 115:The bed was very comfortable, so much so I didn't want to get up :) nice cosy bar at main entrance, very clean establishment, would definitely stay here again.
Review 116:Very comfortable bed, nice breakfast, large clean bathroom. Large car park opposite. The staff are very nice and although the restaurant was closed on the night I stayed. Locals I met said the restaurant was excellent.
Review 117:The result!!!
Review 118:First time we have actually stopped in Chepstow, we normally pass by on route to Aberystwyth area where my sister lives. Needed somewhere to stay after the Wales v All Blacks match on the 22nd November before heading north to pop in to see her on the Sunday. Very pleased by the friendly welcoming staff. Despite our late arrival, staff went out of their way to make us sandwiches. Stunning location near the river
Review 119:A small friendly establishment that is situated in an excellent position on the edge of Chepstow. Breakfast is very good and room was clean and well presented,
Review 120:The only issue we had was that the bed was too small and quite bouncy when one moved it woke up the other. We have a super king at home so a double was tiny for us. Other than that was a lovely stay.
Review 121:The food was amazing we really enjoyed our evening meal and our breakfast, everyone was so friendly and helpful.
Review 122:Nothing to dislike - it does what it says on the box.
Review 123:The room was spacious, and comfortable - beds were really comfortable. Room faced onto the main street, but overnight, traffic noise was no bother. Excellent breakfast, reasonably priced, and cooked to order - egg done to perfection!
Review 124:Room was located down a slippery dark alleyway at the rear of the main building. Radiators didn't work so room was freezing cold and smelt a bit damp. Noise from external door and room upstairs was horrific so didn't get any sleep until gone 4am. Horrendous!
Review 125:Reasonable location, large room
Review 126:Having stayed before automatically thought breakfast was included . No one at anytime gave information of how much breakfast was until we saw the bill I think people should be made aware of this.
Review 127:Comfortable and spacious room with a nice view of the castle. Tasteful decor. Back garden with a small fish pond. Friendly staff. Absolutely delicious food! Even if you are not staying in the hotel, check out the restaurant, you will not be disappointed.
