Reviews for Shrigley Hall Hotel - The Hotel Collection

Review 1:changing area door very difficult to open, showers not clean.

Review 2:good location, comfortable room, spa area could do with some attention especialy male changing area.

Review 3:A very tired hotel. Room a long way from the bar and dining room. First room I was given the bathroom was flooded a long haul back to reception and then back to a room even further away and no assistance.

Review 4:The toilet didn't flush properly, the coffee wasn't good at all in the leisure centre, and there was no hair conditioner in the room.

Review 5:Peaceful, fantastic location. We were able to use the gym and pool.

Review 6:Rooms overlooking carpark are graced with boring flood lights all night long. The Aqua facilities could have done with a bit more care and better mood lighting.

Review 7:Quiet location with a few pubs/restaurants a short drive away. Expect full disconnect with limited phone signal. Exactly what I wanted.

Review 8:There are approx 40 outside steps of different shapes and strides down from the car park to reception. During day light no problem but at night it is very pooly lite.

Review 9:The main house is stunning.

Review 10:Toilet in leisure area had loose seat and the casters on the bed meant every time you turned over in bed the bed moved, they should remove them.

Review 11:It was a stunning hotel, staff very friendly and reasonable value for drinks.

Review 12:Breakfast was very ordinary, poor fruit selection eggs like rubber.mugs for tea and coffee cups would have been nicer,Queues at breakfast as tables were unable to be cleared quickly through lack of staff,We returned to this hotel after a few years and were very dissapointed alround

Review 13:The hotel is in a prime location for scenery.very clean rooms and staff helpful Golf staff extremely good and informative.

Review 14:Quite tired looking, breakfast was poor and was not worth the £20 we were charged for it. There were not enough disabled spaces near to reception which meant a long walk for my wife down a lot of steps..

Review 15:Function room was very nice

Review 16:Totally over priced Hotel never in a million years a 4/5 star Hotel. We went for my wife's Christmas treat and got this !! The rooms were small and in need of a facelift where the paper was peeling off the walls and scratches on the woodwork.. The worse part was the Health and Leisure club which was in a disgusting state with dampness and filth everywhere totally unaccectable. Breakfast was very poor too with Staff who had no interest in their work. Never again !!!

Review 17:Location !!! and the road out of there !!

Review 18:a huge hotel complex with mediocre signage means you may wander around for a long time if your room is on the far edge.

Review 19:very good value room offer for 4 star hotel.Great walks accessible right from hotel.

Review 20:Reception staff not so - for the first time in a dozen or so stays were short and wouldnt consider allowing check in before 3 pm even though their clocks were good 10 minutes slow

Review 21:Restaurant staff very pleasant and helpful Bar staff also

Review 22:Everything is way overpriced at the bar and restaurant. Breakfast at £15 a head? I'd rather drive 7 mins down the road to a Carvery for a lovely £3.99 buffet!

Review 23:Service was not good in bar far too noisy, went to other bar and were told to get drinks from other bar, very poor. Bar man finally turned up in restaurant bar to serve us our next drinks. The photos of new rooms looked good, but on arrival we were put in old wing with older decor and uncomfortable beds.

Review 24:Surroundings, Porter and Reception Staff

Review 25:Could do with a walk in shower for people with mobility problems

Review 26:Upgraded for free when the reception clerk realised my wife had mobility problems so that the room was closer to reception

Review 27:From the main car park to reach main reception you have to go down about 40 outside steps and at night and in the rain the outside lights are simply not strong enough to see where you are going. Its an accident waiting to happen.

Review 28:The main house is stunning and the gym and pool is excellent combined with friendly staff.

Review 29:Long walk to car park up equivalent to ~ 4 storeys. Poorly signed & lit when dark. Could be a bit steep in winter.

Review 30:Impressive Building in tranquil location. Fine service, & pleasant staff. Well done

Review 31:Room 127's bathroom needed a full renovation... Worst of all the toilet didn't flush... Breakfast was disgusting I'm sorry to say.. We had it delivered to our room... Waste of money as all the food was cold

Review 32:Location was perfect.. Staff were exceptionally nice and helpful.. Wedding venue was superb

Review 33:The only criticism is the queue to check out, however we could have paid earlier for a speedier checkout. We will do this when we stay next time which we hope to do soon and certainly the same time next year.

Review 34:We had a lovely quiet relaxing one night stay with breakfast included. We decided to have dinner and were not disappointed. Staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. The setting of the hotel is beautiful (even in the rain) and the main staircase with large Christmas tree was fabulous.

Review 35:My single room was very far from the reception. The whole hotel complex is very large and difficult to navigate. The swimming pool was nice, but Jacuzzi and changing rooms would benefit from refurbishment.

Review 36:Friendly staff, nice christmas decoration, swimming pool and sauna, good food at the bar.

Review 37:The only problem was that we were quite a distance from the dining room and reception as neither of us are good with are legs it was quite a chore up and down stairs

Review 38:The Staff, the food, the swimming pool and beauty facilities, all were very good no bad things really.

Review 39:The room was is desperate need of decorating. The cold tap in the bathroom did not work. when I ordered poached egg on toast the delivered the poached egg and said I had to do my own toast!!! Wifi was not good enough for this type of hotel.

Review 40:Location.

Review 41:Maybe the bedrooms/bathroom a bit tired The electronic keycard failed to work twice...a long walk back to reception, then a wait to get the card 'rebooted' Frustrating...

Review 42:Good location Good staff..at breakfast, in general

Review 43:The carpark is around the back of the hotel and it isn't very obvious how you get in. Its a bit of a hike if you have a lot of luggage. Reception was a bit slow and gave no direction...believe me,you need some as the place is a maze. All the other staff are friendly and I would choose again

Review 44:Magnificent building, beds are comfortable and food was very nice but not much of a selection

Review 45:Parking Access Didn't have space in restaurant (always would expect in-house guests to be accommodated) and then weren't allowed to order from proper menu in the bar - told it was because of computer system?! I'm a hotelier. This is poor effort. Bathroom in poor condition - paintwork, fixtures etc (especially bath panel and woodwork) Fire Alarm went off at 6am. Not hotel's fault but was last straw. Was supposed to have breakfast included but decided to leave instead.

Review 46:Location was good, reception team helpful and efficient Internet easy to access

Review 47:Being woken by fire alarm at 6 in the morning. Waiting an hour before allowed to return to room with no explanation of cause

Review 48:Grounds and leisure facilities

Review 49:Insufficient staff, and those that I encountered did not know how to provide good customer service. No tables available in restaurant, very little space to sit in bar, and bar-staff spent more time struggling with the POS screen than serving drinks. Receptionist just shrugged when I complained, and asked me what I expected her to do about it. Oh - and the "free WiFi" did not actually connect to the internet (I tried with 3 devices). I get better service from a Premier Inn, without the pretensions and at a lower price.

Review 50:The view from the front entrance

Review 51:The fire alarms went off in the night but the staff handled it extremely well and were a credit to the management. Rooms/Decor a bit dated. Cheap rooms at back fairly basic but setting makes up for it.

Review 52:Beautiful setting, a lovely country house surrounded by woods, fields, golf course and sits palatially in its setting. Nice bar. Friendly caring staff. Very good breakfast buffet, very well managed with plenty of staff and everything fully replenished.

Review 53:Pillows too soft and housekeeping unable to provide alternative. Not easy to navigate around. Breakfast choice very limited with long waiting time for food to be replenished.

Review 54:Excellent location with good leisure facilities. Beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside. Quick response to bedside light bulb out and blocked drain in sink

Review 55:The hotel decor was very dated. Although the staff were generally very pleasant, especially in the restaurant, there were some younger staff whose (what seemed to be) inexperience lead them to be less friendly

Review 56:The location between the town and the Peak District

Review 57:Not having a lift which went to our floor ( room 250) a long way from reception. Poor signage and a lot of steps to negogiate with our cases. ( no staff offered to carry them )

Review 58:Beautful surrounds. Opulent stairs and entrance. Friendly staff.

Review 59:The room was awful. Tiny, and very dark - I had no robes or water in my room and was told it was because I had booked with booking.com

Review 60:The bar and restaurant staff are very helpful

Review 61:Very poor check-in; staff member claimed he couldn't find our booking. Smallish bedrooms and very poor lighting indeed. Breakfast good but not exceptional

Review 62:Facilities - e.g. gym, jacuzzi Golf course Grounds

Review 63:No offer to guide us to our room which proved difficult to find owing to long corridors and poor signing. No loo brush in bathroom. Food good (but disappointing risotto and gammon on 1st night) but consider the portions too small. No bread offered with meals but additional pricing needed to pay for "extras." Drinks far too costly (e.g £7.50 upwards for a glass of wine (2.5ml). Poor atmosphere in the dining room, especially the annex with a low roof. Decor somewhat dated and tired throughout (not 4 star standard).Poor understanding between staff with too long a wait for the coffee and tea at breakfast (needs to be served before the main breakfast meal is started). Problemn with shower/water leak in bathroom sorted very quickly though.i

Review 64:Friendly staff and good location handy for attractions in the area.

Review 65:Some areas need a bit of tlc. Age gets to us all.

Review 66:This is the second time I've stayed here. It's a lovely building in a glorious setting. Staff are friendly and always helpful. Gym and swim facilities are great too, always a good way to start the day. Would definitely go back again.

Review 67:not very accessible and apparently no-one to help with luggage, had to carry heavy suitcases up and down stairs. bar seating very limited compared to size of hotel. junior staff at restaurant very ill trained.

Review 68:grand place set in beautiful greens and hills. good location to drive into Peak District the next day. great breakfast. senior bar staff was very kind when we asked for some un-chilled water for a sick family late into the night.

Review 69:Rooms and bathroom somewhat dated Little bit of a maze and fair distance around the hotel

Review 70:Hotel stunning and entrance Grounds amazing Great staff

Review 71:Pool and gym changing area and showers very fun down. Pool and gym themselves were OK. Needs a major revamp to compete..

Review 72:Very nice lobby. Piano bar a nice touch. Nice location for a walk in morning.

Review 73:We had to queue to be seated for breakfast on both mornings even though there were there were plenty of vacant tables, just hadn't been cleared. waited on a stairwell for 30 mins on sunday morning!!

Review 74:The bar was large and plenty of room for our large family gathering. James, the member of staff that was excellent in just making things happen.

Review 75:Room ridiculously hot. Courtyard bar filthy and generally very drab. Ate in room because it was better than eating in Courtyard bar.

Review 76:Location and visual impression of building. Room service snacks good.

Review 77:The room was shabby and tired looking. There were holes in the upholstery and in the bathroom the sink was cracked and the whole room needed a makeover .

Review 78:The staff were very helpful

Review 79:Without your own transport it is not easy to get to. The wifi connectivity was not good.

Review 80:We were there for a friends wedding. The facilities were very nice although a little dated.

Review 81:Children's Swimming pool water was pretty cold. Long walk to reception and restaurant from the rear of the hotel with many steps down with a babyw and pram. Spa called to say a treatment was t paid for and that they had on their own system that we'd already checked out..when in fact we were to stay another night.

Review 82:Buffet breakfast was great-lots of choice. Dinner was lovely but small portions. We had a room service mix up which resulted in a big delay but the duty manager came to us, apologized and offered it for free and drinks too. It wasn't the best impression on out first night but I'm more for acknowledging how one reacts and resolves a problem or complaint. The spa was lovely. The grounds are beautiful but limited as to where you can walk with a pram. Our room was basic. A couple of pictures on the wall could have brightened it up.

Review 83:Some parts are looking a bit tired and unfortunately our room was next to a lift so we didn't sleep very well room 148

Review 84:Staff were fantastic especially Simon who was in charge of the wedding we were at

Review 85:Beautiful location, good food. Yes, it was a fair distance to the bedroom but that wasn't a problem for us. If you have limited mobility I am sure that if you asked they would ensure you would be located a bit nearer.

Review 86:We were told we couldn’t have a reservation for dinner before 8.45 .this was not a problem as we live in France and are used to eating late. We ordered two g and t’s at 8.50 which did not arrive until 9.05 at which time a rather flustered waitress said that ’the chefs are getting edgy because you are not in the dining room yet’ .Unfortunately we felt rushed etc throughout dinner as the staff cleared tables and set up for breakfast. The piano bar closed while we're still sitting having a drink at only 10.30. The serving staff were very pleasant and I guess they only get paid until a set time in the evenings.

Review 87:Beautiful setting

Review 88:The sound insulation in our room was poor ,we went to bed at 11pm, all the guests that went later along the corridor outside sounded as if they were trooping through our room ! Someone - presumably inebriated - charged though at about 2am hitting walls and doors shouting ' where's the effing ell's my room ' - so we were not impressed but it is not the fault of management to have a dipstick like that on the premises . I was told later that some guests had been involved in fighting and were ejected but we heard nothing of that at the time. Our breakfast - we were prompt at 7.30 am as soon as it opened as we had to get away- was excellent but I was not pleased that our room booking could not be located and we were asked several times about our room number and implicitly our right to be there eating breakfast ! Water pressure was low so the en suite shower was not very impressive . overall the staff were helpful , facilities -, really average, not excellent !

Review 89:We thought the view over the valley was spectacular ,

Review 90:Room 210 was not of four star standard. Paint was blistering and damp, the bathroom needed new grout and or bleaching, the green neon light shone through the blind at the window

Review 91:Surroundings,

Review 92:I asked for a ground floor room as my husband has mobility issues. Our room seemed to be quite a way away from Reception.

Review 93:As we met friends at reception we were told that the room we needed to get to was up a long flight of steps! However the hotel provided a golf buggy to transport my husband and myself to the appropriate room. The gentleman who drove the buggy showed us a shorter and easier route to our room at the end of the evening.

Review 94:Everything was fine...there was a bit of a walk from car park [up a hill behind the building] to reception, and my room was also in an annex a fair walk from reception through a maze of corridors...I couldn't figure out a short-cut from car to room other than going through reception, so better to drop luggage off at the front before parking, and ask for availability of rooms in the main building.

Review 95:I was staying here as my friend's wedding reception was being held at this resort, so location was perfect for that. It was the first time for me to stay in this kind of place and I'd like to come back again with more time to enjoy the grounds and facilities.

Review 96:Overall its a good experience however there are some minor things which added together are a bit disappointing. For example lack of directions from car park to reception, pool would benefit from frosted glass on shower doors and a clock and spinner for costumes, breakfast appeared a bit manic and parts of the room were a bit tired.

Review 97:The hotel is located in lovely surroundings and staff are very friendly. The pool was great.

Review 98:Staff were friendly and helpful, despite being busy. Setting was beautiful, room a good temperature, and small swimming pool relaxing. Enjoyed crazy golf. Whole party of us (12) made to feel welcome

Review 99:too many steps everywhere no information overall shabby and neglected needs a lot of TLC Chaotic breakfast no help or directions Bathroom old fashioned

Review 100:Didn't get any sleep because hotel was full of wedding guest and people partying to the early hours not good when you book a spa break to relax

Review 101:The hotel grounds and staff

Review 102:Took 30 minutes to book in and the rooms were miles away from reception and not so easy to find, service in the upstairs bar at the wedding i went to was terrible having to wait 25 minutes to be served with a drink, breakfast was a total farce as we had been missed off the list, then the cutlery was missing crockery was dirty and had to wait for coffee as well. Then to top it all on checking out I was asked to settle a bar tab for my room which I had not had,I wasn't the only person to have this happen to them as a gent in front of me was given a bill for a steak dinner which wasn't his either.

Review 103:Location is great

Review 104:Room service food options after 10pm, my partner is wheat intolerant and all you could order were sandwiches or pizzas

Review 105:Great value, a stunning location with friendly staff. Would definitely return

Review 106:Enormous treck with bags from car park to reception, then back on yourself to room. Decor and maintenance is sadly below par for what could a stunning property, esp. with leisure facilities. Staff were having a computer issue during our visit, which they weren't dealing with well, we got overcharged for the stay and have not yet received a rufund, despite enquireys.

Review 107:Despite been aged and tired in places the hotel was clean.

Review 108:excellent hotel with a superb view of surrounding countryside. breakfast buffet was varied and well cooked evening meal menu was a bit limited but good quality

Review 109:We found that room 101 has the best view of the extensive air conditioning plant. Full sound effects too, especially when maintenance engineers started work on it at 08.15

Review 110:Absolutely everything else!

Review 111:we ordered food in the bar, choice a limited but ok. However, the food was cold when we received it but hey ho. Found the bar staff a little off hand but they served us.

Review 112:location

Review 113:Nothing bad really, though it was a shame the tennis courts were being renovated so we couldn't play.

Review 114:The grounds are magnificent and friendly helpful staff, it was great to see wildlife such as Canada geese and deer as well.

Review 115:Very hard bed; inadequate bedroom lighting; fluctuating shower temperature:surrounding rooms noisy; tennis courts/crazy golf in serious need of maintenance; poor quality dinner.

Review 116:Didn't discover I could have chosen from the restaurant menu in the bar until the last night. When I did it took 1 1/2 hours after my starter to get my main course, and that was after complaining twice. The explanation was that a guest had had a severe medical emergency! To be fair a free drink was offered

Review 117:The hotel was a very relaxing environment to be in, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 118:Distance to room. Porter not offered without my asking when it was too late for my wife had gone.( both in middle eighties and with sticks) Do not like mugs to drink out of although a waitress did supply when asked by me (my wife will not fuss) Steps are unfortunate.

Review 119:Location. Lovely Setting. Wonderful domed staircase. Only sorry I could not flounce down.

Review 120:Waiting to check in for over a hour. No one on hand to show us our room. Too big and impersonal . Pillows lumpy and flat room was dark and small. Weddings catered for but individuals forgotten

Review 121:Spa and food good and views great

Review 122:Room was on the South facing side - the weather was very hot & accordingly was like a sauna and unable to sleep at all

Review 123:Nice hotel, lovely gardens and aspect

Review 124:Staff were friendly and attentive. The grounds and views of the Cheshire countryside are breathtaking. We upgraded our room for a small charge, room was lovely and well kept

Review 125:The amount of walking down corridors and up and down stairs. It is like a rabbit warren. The dining rooms are very cramped as well,

Review 126:The pool was wonderful and the staff were very helpful we were in a room above the kitchens and the air conditioning fan came on every 6 mins for 2mins but it was constant all night and loud so we didn't get any sleep. The receptionist was excellent and moved us to another room when I told her about it.The 2nd room was also much nicer, the first room felt like a budget room.

Review 127:Service of food in bar very slow at one point so bad had too cancel unable to wait any longer.

Review 128:Enjoyed everything about our stay Especially the attention given by staff was amazing .

Review 129:The customer service was excellent. All staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The food was plentiful, the bar was friendly and the location was a treat.

Review 130:booked a family room, they gave me a twin room miles away from the reception. Loads of awkward stairs, easy to get very lost indeed. Too many minimum wage students left to run things, mistakes all over. Weddings every day - worth avoiding.

Review 131:the pool is nice, main building. the grounds fantastic

Review 132:the first 2 rooms we were shown I would not stay in tatty furniture and a view of the binns but they did find us a nice room after an hour.

Review 133:staff very helpful and the food was very good

Review 134:Distance of reception to car park and steps not good for transporting cases Steak for dinner was more grissle than meat

Review 135:Location was good, breakfast was tastiest I have had in a long time

Review 136:Poor service on the breakfast , got tea when asked for a pot of Coffee and had to take a cup from another table as I was tired of waiting and the pot of coffee was getting cold. I had to chase a simple poached egg on granary toast order twice before it came after 40 mins... on White bread ! Its not a major issue in terms of world order but at the room rates and additional breakfast cost it should really be done right .

Review 137:Rooms very dated, quite a long walk to the back, pool a bit busy, jacuzzi not working.

Review 138:Reception helpful, bar staff friendly, pool was nice, lovely views from the front of the hotel

Review 139:In our room was a card explaining special meals and breakfasts in the bar. However at breakfast we were told the bar was not open and breakfast in the hotel restaurant was£14.95 each - an added expense we were not expecting.Don't have information in the guests' rooms which is false!

Review 140:Friendly staff and superb setting.
