Reviews for Hollin Hall Country House Hotel
Review 1:The only thing that let it down was the breakfast. I felt it was a little overpriced for the quality of the food. However, the staff were all friendly and accommodating.
Review 2:The room itself was fantastic and the bed was so comfortable!! Extremely clean room.
Review 3:We didn't like the charge of £25. We understand extra cleaning maybe needed if you have a dog that sheads hair, gets very dirty outside and some dogs may smell a little. When we left our room you wouldn't of known a dog had stayed there overnight. ( Maybe they could make a charge for a pet say £10 with an extra charge when you check out if more cleaning is required ). We stayed in a standard room not a pet room.Nothing was provided for a pet.We took a crate for puppy to sleep in, blanket for the floor to play on plus everything else you need. No poo bins outside we had to ask where to put a poo bag. No set dog area outside either. This was our first time away with a puppy .We had a lovely time.Next time we will have to look into it more when booking a hotel with a puppy / dog and phone the hotel first for more details. We have now noticed some pet friendly hotels provide a lot more and cheaper.
Review 4:We stayed at Hollin Hall a couple of years ago to celebrate my birthday and we had a lovely weekend break. We now have a Caverpoo puppy ( small, cute, friendly and doesn't shed hair ) and wanted one night away, birthday time again, this time with a puppy to see how it would work out.As we had stayed at Hollin Hall before we knew the hotel and the area had lots of great places to walk to and a great plus you can take pets to Hollin Hall.
Review 5:Breakfast was awful , cold ,worst self service I have ever had .no wonder they make you pay on arrival as you certainly wouldn't pay for the food
Review 6:Not too much very basic
Review 7:Too many young children allowed to be present at what we considered to be an adult event (New Years Eve Celebrations). And if they had to be present then they should have been sent to bed before 9pm & not 1.30am.
Review 8:Room was nice and comfortable. Location was good.
Review 9:Lousy food. Paid 12 pounds for chicken and rice in curry sauce that was crap! Also, the price that I booked at was not the same a booking.com told me it would be
Review 10:Nice clean room!
Review 11:The staff, the fact that you book through booking.com and breakfast was requested but not deducted or included despite requesting it. The breakfast was very poor and undercooked and the waitress was was incredibly rude.
Review 12:The bar area was designed quite nice
Review 13:We had chicken at the wedding meal and thought there was too much chicken. One breast would have been ample served with more potato and fresh veg.
Review 14:We booked a room as we were attending a family wedding. We found the hotel clean and comfortable and staff very friendly and attentive. The food was great too with s good choice at breakfast.
Review 15:We attended a wedding and the whole experience was fantastic, the rooms were extremely comfortable and the event was a huge success largely due to the hard work of the staff. Thank you very much to all
Review 16:The breakfast being served in Chafon dishes was very awquard and £12.95 a head for the breakfast was rather expensive.
Review 17:The Decore and setting for a wedding is perfect
Review 18:Room was very small, no heating, had been set up for one person but 2 people in the room. Restaurant was shut for Xmas, so limited bar menu. No bar staff on duty so tables left uncleared, I could go on and on but it was cheap.
Review 19:staff were nice and friendly cheap and nice breakfast
Review 20:Poor communication before date. Followed by poor 3rd bed communication. Then had dog barking in eve, denied it was there until came to check in next room.
Review 21:Nice main building.
Review 22:Bedrooms are very tired looking and a bit shabby. Same with the bathrooms and corridors. It has been painted but they have just painted over tatty wallpaper. Around the radiators you can still see the original wallpaper. Beds not comfortable and bedding too small for the two single beds which were pushed together. We got down 2 minutes after 10 so we're refused breakfast.
Review 23:Staff were friendly and very helpful
Review 24:The hotel really needs a little TLC before it gets run down. A bit of gloss paint here and there and a dab of wallpaper paste would go a long way. Some of the doors are of the "factory finish" matt paint and now very discoloured with dirty hand prints. If glossed they would just need a quick wipe down. At the time of my visit the restaurant was closed due to an earlier power failure, but i was informed of this prior to my arrival and able to get a sufficient bar snack.
Review 25:The room was both spacious and comfortable and all the staff very helpful and accommodating.
Review 26:We went for our son's wedding, we had a fantastic weekend. The package was great we couldn't fault it. Andrew who was master of ceremonies was brilliant he couldn't do enough for us. I would recommend the wedding package to any one.
Review 27:Nothingw
Review 28:The management and staff made the day (Neices wedding) a wonderful and memorable occasion. I couldn't fault anything. Well done, all staff at Hollin Hall!
Review 29:Breakfast on Sunday wasn't very good, as it was serve yourself buffet. Evening Wedding food was a bit poor- standard buffet fare. The lights in the hall were visible at night through the bedroom door. Difficult to cool the room down at night.
Review 30:Lovely bathroom, spacious room. Staff were helpful and pleasant. Nice breakfast on Saturday.
Review 31:There was no shelf in the bathroom which in turn wasn't exactly spotless, and there was a great deal of dust behind the television. I had to ask for directions to my room (ground floor) and was surprised to be told "up the stairs through the arch then down the stairs! If I hadn't asked I'd have spent ages looking for it!
Review 32:Close to where I needed to be, no charge for parking and offers free (but very slow) WiFi.
Review 33:We were booked into the wrong room but it was soon rectified. No bath mat and v slippery floor and a redundant notice advising need to tuck in shower curtain which had been replaced by a glass screen. No instructions on shower/bath and not very obvious.
Review 34:We were there for a wedding and everything was great, especially the food and the disco. The room was nice and the bed and bedlinen very comfortable. Everything worked. The exterior of the building needs some tlc.
Review 35:Room had hair in shower and on bed covers! Cob webs on lamps and lights, window painted open. Had to move room which was better but still not very clean, dirty bath tub, hair stuck to tiles, brown marks on bed covers, tv remote did not work properly. Breakfast omelette was tasteless and greasy
Review 36:Staff were friendly good breakfast selection and room service menu
Review 37:The staff were all very friendly, the room was comfortable and nicely furnished. We had 2 good nights sleep. The restaurant was attractive and the food was excellent. A very enjoyable stay.
Review 38:Bedroom view was of a Brick wall & the Bedroom had a water leak and the carpet was soaking & a bit smelly.. I Was told that I would be relocated, only to then be told they were at full capacity. Shipped off to a local B & B at a nearby farm.. Having traveled from Kent, I was not Happy.
Review 39:I did return to have dinner as I had booked it & the food was nice, however understaffed & a 2 course meal with a coffee took 2 hours!
Review 40:The price you pay for a room and what you get dont match up. It wasnt comfortable and was dated.
Review 41:Cleanliness and location, outside view of building was nice.
Review 42:The rooms the food the whole experience it was like Fawlty Towers we weren't the only ones who thought it was!!
Review 43:Not a lot terrible would not visit or recommend that dissatisfied we are contacting the Carlton Hotels company
Review 44:The light over the sink did not work and each time we turned the taps on we got a shower of water as there was lots of air in the system
Review 45:The comfort of the bed, no disturbance at night
Review 46:Didn't like the waiting around at reception for staff to appear. The room was only made up for one, ie one towel and one tiny shower gel and shampoo set although staff did rectify this without any fuss
Review 47:Liked the breakfast and the bed was comfortable. The entrance hall was very beautiful; in particular I like the coloured glass in the roof
Review 48:Paid for a room for three people, one double bed and, our daughter on a sofa bed. when we saw the room it was disgusting, in need of repairs and redecorating. we asked to move rooms the only one available was the bridal suite, which cost us an extra £30 per night for the upgrade, and another £25 to put a z-bed in the suite, for our daughter, we thought that was excessive as we had paid for 3 people for the original room. when we got up for breakfast it cost us another 12.95 each, I thought we had paid for breakfast when I originally booked.(which I hope you can clarify) So after one night we checked out. The sad part about this, it was a surprise Birthday party for my wife who has had a dreadfull year. So we ended back home after one night.
Review 49:The state of repair of the room was unacceptable; broken lights, light fittings not secure to the wall, bathroom outdated, beds appalling - huge dip in the middle of each bed, kettle not working.
Review 50:The location and surroundings of the hotel were very nice.
Review 51:Staff all young, shower cubicle tiny so can't move in it but the bathroom had a stupid un necessary bath in it. Poor quality of food. Bird poo all over conservatory roof. Wedding guests everywhere so were mixed in with hotel guests. Worst of all was the breakfast. All staff young kids with one woman who was rude. Busy breakfast room. Waited ages. No croissants left. Cooked breakfast poor standard. Anaemic sausages, cheap beans. Toast nasty cheap bread
Review 52:Nice refurb completed on hotel which makes this hotel ok. Nice sized suite with big zipped bed and spacious bathroom.
Review 53:The bedroom carpet was grubby and stained, the mirror had a dubious stain on it, large hole in the wall, dirty teaspoon, no bulb in the bedside light, bed headboard bagged against the wall when moving in bed. Food mediocre, missing items asked for, our meal going round the dining room as they didn't know who it was for, asking for coffee twice.
Review 54:The bathroom.
Review 55:Room was a long way from reception.Shower very poor but they are updating. Asked for twin beds but was a king size which had to be separated. No hair dryer.Only one chair. Lighting was poor but it always is in hotels. Beds were comfortable at least.
Review 56:We like the area. The breakfast was very good and the two meals we had were fine.
Review 57:Room was cold, bath was not cleaned properly, around the bar area was a dreadful smell which should have been cleaned up from the previous night, overall disappointing waited at least 35 minutes to check in after having to use the "back door" because there was already a wedding on, very hard loading bags through numerous flights of stairs,on the plus side breakfast was good and the staff were lovely .
Review 58:There was a wedding on both the Friday and Saturday night, and we had picked it on the basis of quiet and tranquil. The staff were very good and offered us free drinks, but it meant the tranquil bar seating was less than tranquil!!
Review 59:Comfortable room
Review 60:Think it would be better if the breakfast was included £75 a night with no breakfast is a lot to pay esp as it's extra £12 each for breakfast. Didn't know what time we had to check out.
Review 61:The location was lovely rooms with kettle iron and ironing board big bonus. Bar staff and reception lady were friendly and polite.
Review 62:the poor service and lack of organization in the breakfast room and the woman who ran the breakfast was rude to the point of us leaving without eating a full breakfast!
Review 63:The location
Review 64:Room was shabby and dirty - used wrappers lying next to the bed. Dirty marks on the walls and the bed was uncomfortable. Very run down and in need of serious tlc
Review 65:Good location with beautiful potential. The front of the hotel had been done well.
Review 66:We had to Change rooms three times the stairs to the rooms are dirty and dusty ,the noise in room nine from the kitchen is horrendous ,we had a meal in the dinning room one meal went back twice the food was disgusting ,the fire alarm went off on our second night but there seems to be no fire evacuation policy at this hotel and don't bother emailing the management to complain as they'd just ignore your emails basically they don't give a dam!!
Review 67:Going home
Review 68:We travelled with elderly parents who needed to use the lift which stupidly was located through a wedding reception room. So it was mortifying for us to go through a wedding reception in full swing with all our cases. Very embarrassing. Had I known that we were staying at the hotel while 3 weddings one after each other was going on, I would not have booked because it was overcrowded and the music went on late into the evening. The breakfast was overpriced we found a local café to suit our needs.
Review 69:The location and the comfort of the room
Review 70:Arrived on a Thursday but could not sleep due to a wedding reception in main hall creating such a noise in my room. Was then moved to the third floor for Friday and Saturday when another two wedding receptions disturbed my sleep especially when drunk guests returned to their rooms in the early hours of the morning. Hotel said that they would have warned me of the weddings had I booked direct. Not an acceptable excuse for me. This is not the place to stay if you are not part of the wedding.
Review 71:Nothing
Review 72:Have stayed here several times, and always had a good night's sleep. It's a great place to wake up, and the breakfast is excellent. We mainly stay here because it's close to relatives, but it would be worth a detour if you want something special.
Review 73:When booking we requested breakfast included in the price however upon entering the breakfast area. We were challenge by a rather rude lade who insisted I travel all the way back to the room to get the booking form to prove breakfast had been requested. As we hadn't paid for the room at this stage we were confused as to why I should have to go back and prove the request. The situation infront of other people having breakfast was extremely embarrassing and completely unnecessary. Bathroom handle came off when first entering room - advised reception who did nothing about it. On arrival the receptionist said I cannot advise where your room is only been here 2 days I'm a temp. Pretty poor
Review 74:Bar area nice but shut early
Review 75:I felt the service should of been better. The bride had breakfast at 8.00 in her room and the dirty plates were still in the room at 10. I asked for them to be taken away and they were still there an hour later. I put them in the hallway and they were still there at 2pm. The bar staff in the evening were not very friendly and looked like they didn't want to be there. Breakfast took over an hour to be served and I had to ask twice for our breakfast. Check out took 30 minutes!
Review 76:The hotel was lovely setting a wedding and really lovely surroundings. The staff serving the food and day bar staff were pleasant
Review 77:Hotel not aware of our booking, offered room on 2nd floor, not made up, then given Bridal suite which was not made up during our two night stay. Think someone needs to get a grip of the housekeeping staff. Receptionist very helpful on arrival, different receptionist overcharged us by £76 as she had not been made aware of our Booking.com price of £140. Overall I would not rate this hotel higher than 3 star, they also need to put some kind of notice on the road outside their gates as the hotel is easily missed, particularly in the dark.
Review 78:Very little
Review 79:could not check in until 3pm, and as we were going to a music concert at 2pm, we did not check in until 1am. on getting into the room there was no toilet roll supplied.
Review 80:nice surroundings
Review 81:Rooms were superior, however they didn't feel it. Beds and pillows in particular were uncomfortable, noise insulation was poor and it sounds from adjacent rooms were very noticeable. Breakfast was really unimpressive and route from reception to rooms was not in keeping with expectations.
Review 82:The entrance to the hotel is impressive. It was a good location also for us as we went to a wedding nearby.
Review 83:View from our bedroom was a brick wall Long delay for breakfast, when it did come breakfast was incomplete Dust in the bedroom on hangers
Review 84:Nice location
Review 85:The hotel smelt in the corridors which was very unpleasant. Our room was not very clean and my bedside light had nowhere to plug it in
Review 86:Staff were very friendly
Review 87:Tired room and bathroom. Couldn't find a member of staff when entering the restaurant. Wedding party going on during the Wednesday night of my 3 night stay
Review 88:Poor service, shabby room, I know they had an incident going on but surely guests are there bread and butter. Sent an e-mail to hotel after but no reply! Surprise surprise
Review 89:The bed was comfortable
Review 90:Absolute nightmare regarding service at the bar.2 staff on duty and nothing but queues all night. At breakfast in the morning we waied 45 minutes to be attended to and eventually got two cold breakfasts which didn't have the same items. We had to keep asking for a cup of tea and also the toast which arrived after we had finished our meals.
Review 91:This hotel at the weekends is a wedding venue so is packed out and noisy until the early hours. Breakfast was a complete shambles after waiting hour and hour for 2 poached eggs I walked out.
Review 92:Could park
Review 93:In process of being renovated not really an issue but I mention it for something to write here
Review 94:food was good, quiet location ...did I mention the food.
Review 95:Hotel clearly mid-rennovation and the room I was in really shouldn't have been given to a guest - poorly modernised bathroom with grout and plaster dust everywhere and exposed wiring on an LED light which seemed an afterthought. Beds were the worst and most uncomfortable I have ever (not) slept in.
Review 96:Breakfast was good food but in a tired and poorly maintained restaurant with dirty glasses and cutlery.
Review 97:Generally a bit shabby in appearance. Looks like it hasn't been hoovered and spring cleaned in quite a while. I asked for a double room and got a twin. Had to wait a while to get served for breakfast
Review 98:The breakfast was quite good
Review 99:Poor service from Manager Chris. Had to ask several times for a hairdryer and finally got one after 10 attempts! Not much choice of food for restaurant
Review 100:Breakfast was good. Location nice and quiet
Review 101:Left disappointed as looked full of character, the hotel was ok, but severely lacked attention to details & a was very tired needing a lot of TLC. My Keycard & Other guests stopped working, long walk to reception. On our booking said lady with mobility problems (Room given was furthest from lift not helpful?) Not at all good for disabled guests as to use Lift to floors had to walk through function room? (good job no function although Wedding previous day had not been completely tidied up, also hall to lift communal area shabby, possibly under refirb but no sign? certainly not vacuumed, very tired, used on Level 2 as storage with spare bed/iron/glasses left. Bar left unattended in evening, had to hunt for one member of staff/cleaner/nightman to assist even though lights & radio left on. Despite him leaving a note as the till wouldn't work, when paid bill next morning they missed 2nd drinks off our bill anyway (Good for hotel that we are too honest!! most would just accept free drinks) Rooms again ok but scratches in paint, hole in door, paint peeling, no bathmat or Shower curtain in Bathroom despite sign asking to ensure curtain in bath?) Panel on wall guessing for heated Mirror in blurb - no idea if broken or how to work? instructions? so no mirror as no fan in bathroom.
Review 102:Rooms were ok, clean (apart from a few niggles listed in my dislikes mainly comfortable, and staff were very helpful swapped room for us, so one of our guests had a shower ( still no SlipMat) as mobility problems mean't not being able to use bath. Breakfast was good for us as quick service (guests day before told us to cancel as they had hour & half wait - but that was guessing with a couple of weddings on!)
Review 103:Total lack of organisation at breakfast, waited an hour and a half for a cooked breakfast, people were getting up and walking out. Staff seemed disinterested and there seemed to be no routine. It was probably the worst experience I have ever had and completely overpriced. Would never stay here again not recommend it to friends.
Review 104:Location was ok and a very pretty setting, room was clean and felt recently refurbished.
Review 105:Cleanliness of room, pillows too thin, wifi none existence, filthy windows, general cleaning issues
Review 106:The bar staff were very good and certeous, and friendly
Review 107:Crammed with wedding parties on both nights so higher price than normal and felt like uninvited guests...
Review 108:Location excellent. Rooms clean and functional.
Review 109:There was a dirty coffee cup on the tray and the usual dirth of tea bags. They had forgotten to place new towels in the bathroom. We asked for more tea bags and linen and it was quicklt delivered.
Review 110:good location. large bedroom, Good bathroom.
Review 111:The room was not clean The bed was very uncomfortable The pillows were old and uncomfortable The breakfast was disorganised and random as to whether it came or not
Review 112:The location and the young staff were helpful and willing however very inexperienced It has potential
Review 113:The bathroom was a very poor standard. The overall state of the hotel is very tired. The breakfast was a joke. We spent more time having to ask for things to be brought out. All the tables were still full of dirty dishes and the staff were 16 year olds who needed more help. We were not the only people unhappy with the breakfast. They were clearly well under staffed.
Review 114:Hotel and rooms were dirty. Needed a good vacuum. Outside terrace covered in used glasses. Came down to breakfast at 9.40 - nothing left. They would not even get me a cup of coffee.
Review 115:Packing to leave.
Review 116:staff attitude Was awful we had arrived at 6pm to check in staff yawning then had a meal in the restaurant and ordered wine and water and water came then ordered our meal and 1/2 hour had past and still hadn't got wine or glasses to drink our water.breakfast in the morning and we were asked whether we wanted a full English there was no menu and didn't know what included in this which would of been nice.
Review 117:good value for money in a lovely area on the edge of the Peak District With a lovely view of countryside from the front of the hotel.
Review 118:Renovation work is piecemeal, sporadic and ongoing. Our room was tired and past its sell by. Sparsely furnished and at the end of a long rambling corridor. Non working lights and broken power points.
Review 119:Hotel was in a lovely semi rural setting, convenient for the Peak District.
Review 120:I needed a cheap place to stay for a work trip. With low exceptions I was pleasantly surprised with holins hall. The main areas like reception, bar and restuarant are lovely. The corridors leading to rooms are a bit tired but the rooms themselves we're clean, comfortable and quiet.
Review 121:The noise..no peace and quiet at all.
Review 122:I was in room 6.above reception.tgeres a 1 inch gap around the door so you can hear all the noise. Theres a connecting door in my room to next door, very very thin..there was a couple next door..you could hear everything..talking..kissing..breathing..that thin. In the middle of the night..i didnt know wether to light a cigarette on throw cold water over myself.
Review 123:Poorly maintained rooms. Dirty marked walls. Generally run down. Food on the poor side and breakfast seemed poorly organised.
Review 124:Almost none of it. We stayed for a wedding. The wedding itself seemed reasonable enough (but that's for the happy couple to review themselves, as per their expectations)
Review 125:The sheets and the room were dirty and even though we asked reception to change them it was 3 in the morning before they did it and we ended up helping to make our own bed. There was no staff and breakfast tasted ok but you had to search for a cup or a glass off other tables to get a drink. The hotel is a beautiful building but in need of serious maintenance. All in all its the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. On a good note we got 50% knocked off the bill due to the manager being snappy with us at 3 in the morning when we said we didn't want to sleep with pubic hairs belonging to strangers.
Review 126:The biking is beautiful but needs updating.
Review 127:Poor service from the staff long delays in getting your evening meal. Not enough staff for the breakfast having to wait ages for different items of food the excuse was only one chef in.
Review 128:The surrounding area
Review 129:the bed mattresses were soft & the bedrooms could do with a lick of paint & updating. There was no disabled rooms for wheelchair users.
Review 130:this setting and the beautiful building, however it did need updating & redecorating. The rooms were nice and the staff were extremely pleasant. The food was also very good
Review 131:Staff with little sense of urgency and not interested in guests. The communal areas are really attractive but the rest of the hotel and the rooms need refurbishment so that the boutique feel is extended throughout the hotel. This could be a gem but overall needs more professional approach to customer service and some decorative TLC.
Review 132:Beautiful setting and stunning Victorian building. Clean room and lovely outlook. Good breakfast.
Review 133:I stayed in a twin room and there was a bit of a damp smell, and the carpets were in need of some refreshing, it felt a bit like a dorm room
Review 134:The breakfast was great, no quarms where food is involved
Review 135:Was very cold day and many people were complaining about the cold the fires weren't lit and the heating was not on also the card machine was not working at check in.
Review 136:Nice place friendly staff
Review 137:The room we were originally given (end of cooridor on the first floor) smelled musty and damp. On returning back from our event we mentioned this to rception though and were immediately moved to another room. At check in we asked if breakfast was included and we were told yes, but unfortunately when we went doen for breakfast in the morning we were told it wasn't and would be an additional cost.
Review 138:Country hotel in a rurul location. Just a couple of miles outsaide the town of Macclesfield and just a short drive to Buxton and the Peak District. Friendly staff who dealt with out problem promptly
Review 139:My room window was broken and the bathroom had no toilette paper. Beds were not very comfortable and the room service quite average. Hotel staff not kind at all.
