Reviews for Potters Heron Hotel

Review 1:When we arrived to check in for the evening there was a wedding party going on in the hotel bar area. This is obviously to be expected in December, however I checked at reception that my parents would not be disturbed by the noise in their room and was assured that the music could not be heard in the bedrooms. Sadly this was not actually the case and as a result their stay was not a peaceful one! I am disappointed that the reality was not explained by the reception staff as I would have stayed myself instead and given them my bedroom in their house! It was booked as a treat for them and unfortunately in this occasion didn't prove to be one. We have stayed at the hotel on numerous occasions before and found it to be very comfortable. A note on booking about the wedding reception would have been appreciated and certainly a more truthful response on the evening itself would have been better! Especially considering the increased cost during the festive season!!

Review 2:slightly 'off the beaten trail' which requires a deviation off the main routes but palatable and worth the trouble

Review 3:very pleasant hotel, excellent rate for the quality

Review 4:Unable to sit in bar area to have quiet nightcap on return to hotel had to sit in lobby area between 2 very noisy Christmas functions

Review 5:Quiet room with balcony

Review 6:The rooms was booked via booking.com and were advertised with Kingsize beds - but there were no Kingsize beds - or suits so this was totally wrong marketing. The hotel manager was extremely helpful and we had vouchers to spend in the restaurant which was very good - but no compensation for the small double bed we had two sleepless nights on!

Review 7:Very friendly helpful staff

Review 8:there was nothing to dislike

Review 9:the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The hotel is very well situated for Winchester, Southampton, Portsmouth and New Forest and in a lovely setting, The rooms are well decorated and the rooms were spotless.

Review 10:The score recorded above does not represent our views of the hotel or where the blame lies. Our problems were caused by the inadequate Booking.com website, which we advise others to avoid.

Review 11:just let down by smudged window, cobwebs above curtains, and dust on plinth above bed, only an issue as I suffer from asthma and dust sets its off

Review 12:Great staff, helpful and cheery,Food good nice rooms, great Location

Review 13:Some refurbishment needed to rooms Didn't match my expectations from what I saw on web

Review 14:Location was convenient to family in Romsey Overall a good experience

Review 15:The rooms were cold on arrival and as it was a wet day gave a poor impression on entering the room. The heating must be on a timer as I couldn't turn it on but it did warm up later in the evening.

Review 16:The rooms were comfortable and staff polite . A lovely area I look forward to visiting again.

Review 17:We were satisfied with everything

Review 18:My father was admitted to Southampton Hospital after contracting pneumonia on returning from a cruise. I travelled up from Devon to be with my 83 year old mum, I found the Potters Heron based on price, for the Friday night .We stayed and found it comfortable. We asked to stay the second night Saturday night and were told the price had gone up by a considerable amount , I told the receptionist that we liked the place and wanted to pay the same price as Friday and would be happy to keep our existing rooms The receptionist was very helpful and secured the rooms for the second night st the same price We were very grateful and very impressed by the thoughtfulness

Review 19:The staff were very helpful and every one of them had a smile on their face which was nice to see. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and our food was first class and good value. Breakfast was great also with a really good selection of fruit, cereal, pastries and hot buffet. We stayed in a superior room which was very spacious and nicely decorated. Would definitely stay again.

Review 20:The only thing we found a little fustrating was that it was difficult to turn the heating down. The radiator dial is tucked behind the wardrobe therefore unable to see which way to turn it.

Review 21:The hotel is well sign posted, & in a great location. Staff welcoming & clean.

Review 22:the room was very dated narrow beds, tatty decor chipped wash basin surond the shower was impossible to control one minute hot the next minute boiling the next cold

Review 23:the food was good not excellent but enjoyable

Review 24:enjoyed the whole package, the location, the rooms, the staff where all fab... just a shame that I could not stay longer :) staying at the Potters Heron, made a special day ( my Ddaughters Graduation) even better.. Thank you

Review 25:I left my phone and asked for the hotel to post it to me, they said they would charge me packaging, petrol to the post office and time , that came to £12, considering I had just spent £280 for a 2 night stay I thought this obsessive ! Will not stay again !

Review 26:Beautiful thatched roof hotel. Comfortable, spacious, clean, friendly staff. The restaurant and food was plentiful and delicious. We really enjoyed our stay here, despite me leaving two jackets in the wardrobe. A quick phone call to housekeeping and they packaged them up and posted them back to Australia. They were here waiting for me, when we returned from our trip. Excellent, helpful service.

Review 27:We thought the staff in restaurant were not up to speed with what was on the menu and cleared our table when some of us were still eating!! menu a bit limited.

Review 28:rooms were clean and ok food was good. beds were comfortable.

Review 29:The breakfasts were adequate except for the bacon which was not properly cooked. It was either over cooked or stuck together in lumps which were undercooked.

Review 30:The hotel was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 31:We had a problem with communicating with the restaurant and bar staff who seem to have a problem with the English language. Our lunch order was taken down wrong so we did not get what we ordered and when ordering dinner the waitress did not understand your own menu!

Review 32:The room was to a very high standard and both the bar and the outside are very pleasing and again to a very high standard and very comfortable.

Review 33:The breakfast was far better four years ago. Although the windows were kept open all the time there was an unpleasant odour in the room.

Review 34:Good location when visiting friends in the Winchester and Southampton area.

Review 35:The water did not taste very nice (in room 44 anyway). Bring a bottle if you want to make tea or coffee.

Review 36:The room 44 was perfectly adequate for our needs and the bed huge and comfortable. Very clean throughout.

Review 37:There is a bareness about the reception and adjoining areas. Bed requires a topsheet fitted (turned down). The duvet at this time of year is too hot for many people. I sleep under a topsheet for much of the year. The

Review 38:staff very friendly and helpful. The location is very pleasant.

Review 39:Breakfast: There was a good choice. But,the cooked food was not hot, warmish, and the flasks of tea were really grim. Would rather have had access to hot water and tea bags!

Review 40:Staff were friendly, the room was comfortable and clean, overlooking the garden area, with a balcony. We did not eat dinner, and as there was a wedding I'm not sure if they were serving that night.

Review 41:Service in the restraint was terrible. We ordered 2 stakes the same one perfect the other tasted as if something very sour had been put on it. The room smelled of BO and damp. Checked out early.

Review 42:dirty dirty dirty. I stay in hotels for work every week. This was supposed to be a nice theatre night meal and hotel. This day has cost us over £300 and a dirty hotel has put a real downer on it. I will not only never stay here again but will also never trust booking.com reviews again

Review 43:Receptionist was nice

Review 44:Disappointed to find no no mini refrigerator in the room - this is especially important for those carrying medication that should be keep cold (like me). Ensuite needs to be upgraded.

Review 45:After waiting 5 minutes had to go looking for staff to book in. Junior breakfast staff not very helpful. Premises need rejuvenating

Review 46:Restaurant manager very helpful.

Review 47:no elevator no air conditioning or fan in room no indoor pool breakfast was expensive room was expensive

Review 48:Exterior architecture -- thatched roof was completely charming

Review 49:bit concerned about having a ground floor room and not being able to leave a window open for air though the night (risky leaving door open!)

Review 50:nice hotel in pleasant location

Review 51:The breakfast wasn't great but that could have been becasue I was quite late so most of the food was eaten. The staff during breakfast wasn't too cheerie.

Review 52:The reception staff were very polite and helpful. Dinner in the restaurant was extremely good and kid friendly. Our room was really nice and spacious.

Review 53:The only thing that displeased us was the spots of black mould on the sealant in the bathroom.

Review 54:Bed was very comfortable, balcony was a delightful touch, bathroom was nicely laid out & equipped, the TV was easy to use & the hotel info was easily accessed, there were a choice of places to sit & the leather chairs were clean & welcoming.

Review 55:The hotel is very nice and so are the staff. Room was very good, but bathroom, although clean, was a bit on the tired side. Breakfast was well cooked and plenty of choice. No hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Review 56:The staff were all pleasant, but could have been more helpful to a mature couple. At Reception (help with our luggage down the stairs could have been offered), and in the bar when we went for lunch, we were treated a little casually.

Review 57:The location, the room, and the breakfast were all great.

Review 58:Dreadful bathroom, disengaged management and the breakfast quality was dire. My grandson only had cereal to choose. Tea and coffee self service from flasks!!!

Review 59:The distance from any conveniences was too far. I did not have a car so was a bit "stuck". I thought the overall price was high for the standard of the hotel. I had to pay extra for breakfast also. It is a nice hotel but not luxurious in any way.

Review 60:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and service were excellent. Having an outside patio with table and chairs was a bonus although it was almost completely in the shade.

Review 61:Bathrooms are outdated, bath too small. Need new windows, draughty & build up of condensation in mornings. The restaurant is only suited to adults/quiet teenage children. They do not serve any drinks suitable for children, was very surprised as fruit shoots ect are normally available in every hotel I've ever been to.

Review 62:Staff were very friendly & helpful. Room service option is great. Breakfast very good.

Review 63:Bed was quite hard but the pillows are awful really uncomfortable..we paid extra for our breakfast as not included, it was ok..

Review 64:Location, very close to my daughters home..

Review 65:Bathroom small and tired. Did not affect the experience just noticeable comments. No complimentary bottled water in the room. The only option for fresh air was opening the garden door, no windows to open meaning condensation built up really quickly

Review 66:Friendly Welcome, Cleanliness, Easy to find, Fantastic Shower (a real power shower).

Review 67:Reservation throuhg booking family room 2 adults + 1 child, on reservation confirmation only 2 adults - we had to pay extra for child on arrival and charming assistant was incapable of supplying us with bed linnen so despite all the rest nice location, superfriendly staff mixed feeling

Review 68:Nice location, nice autumn forest pictures, very friendly staff

Review 69:We arrived to a cloud of cigarette smoke around the main entrance. The wedding reception was extremely noisy and the motor from the air conditioning unit outside our bedroom ran noisily from 6-30am!

Review 70:Bed was comfortable and the room was spotlessly clean.

Review 71:A bit out of the way for our purposes. We had booked for 2 adults and 2 children via booking.com but the room wasn't really big enough

Review 72:Staff were excellent, facilities were very good and food was amazing

Review 73:Restaurant service at dinner was slow and poor - 45 mins + from main course order to service - however, the food was good once it arrived. Staff need to be better trained - we had to eventually ask for desert menu and for cutlery to eat it with once served .

Review 74:Warm welcome, room clean and comfortable.Buffet breakfast good. Interesting layout in main bar/eating area.

Review 75:We had booked a party of nine for my mother's 90th birthday and the average age of the group was 85. We were put on a table which was up a flight of stairs! The restaurant was not busy but service was extremely slow. I had to go and find someone to take our dessert order. However, the food was very good.

Review 76:The room was very spacious and nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows brilliant. The staff in the hotel were very pleasant and efficient. I had read some very negative reviews prior to our visit, but we had no problems at all. We would visit again.

Review 77:The room was little smelly. I'm sure it had been cleaned but there remained a smell of perspiration which was difficult to determine where it came from.

Review 78:Lovely hotel. Great location. Convenient for the walk we planned.

Review 79:The evening staff in the restaurant were not able to understand us very well & service was slow even though the restaurant was empty. Fantastic meal though! The lift facility was a nightmare to use & with a buggy there were lots of stairs to navigate.

Review 80:Lovely place. Fantastic dinner & breakfast. Reception staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. A credit to the hotel.

Review 81:The room was very small as was the bathroom. One night here would've been perfect but after two we were glad to leave. An iron would be a good idea but reception would most certainly have helped out, they were all very friendly and caring.

Review 82:We stayed on the ground floor and it was really quiet considering the hotel was almost full. Everything lovely and clean, comfy bed and plenty of tea/coffee etc and toiletries. Nice to have a patio which lead into the garden. Breakfast was marvellous. The location is ideal, in between Winchester and Southampton, with lots of lovely villages more local. A great Chinese restaurant about 2 miles away.

Review 83:We had specified that we wanted to pay cash via the 'booking.com' form and when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist checked us in and said that she needed to swipe our bank card. She said they weren't taking any money but it was just as a security. We assumed that we would just pay upon check out like we do when we usually stay at hotels. When we got back to the room my husband checked our bank account as we had a payment to make with the funds available in our account. Unfortunately the hotel had done a pre-auth on the funds for the room so we were unable to make the payment that we needed to.We popped back to reception to give to give them at least the first nights cash and to ask them to cancel the pre-auth. The receptionist took the cash and said that she has cancelled the electronic pre-auth. When we went back to the room the money still wasn't in and because we were waiting for a payment the next day we were then left with no money for that night for dinner. We had to go back to reception to ask for the cash back and we went for dinner. When we returned to the room the receptionist phoned us saying that because she had cancelled the pre-auth and we had taken the cash back that they had no payment for the first night of the room and they needed it (even though our bank had not returned the funds). She said that she had spoken to our bank and that they had assured her that the electronic payment would be back in our account within two hours. The bank later told us that they had no record of a phone call with the hotel. They also told us that the hotel would need to contact their card terminal provider via fax to confirm that the room had been paid for by other means in order for the funds to be refunded.

Review 84:The location of the hotel is good and it is extremely attractive from the outside. The décor was good and the room was really nice + access to the outside via a patio door was a bonus. The restaurant looked lovely although we didn't eat there.

Review 85:Very minor: our room (28) looked out onto the gardens at ground level - which meant that garden users could look in. Net curtains would have preserved privacy during the day.

Review 86:The different levels within the hotel added to the charm, as did the thatched roof. The room had sufficient space and seemed well enough equipped. Ample car parking.

Review 87:The staff in the restaurant. Apart from 1 were not too helpful. Although the hotel welcomes families we felt in the restaurant that was not the case. Also didn't like shower curtain in what is supposed to be a deluxe room

Review 88:Guy on reception was friendly and welcoming. Location was great for peppa pig world and new forest

Review 89:Although in a nice location it was just a little out of the way nothing nearby

Review 90:Everything very clean and tidy nice bed linen and towels. Great to have a bath as well as a shower and lovely large soft towels

Review 91:The hotel is quite isolated from other amenities. Many people may find this a bonus.

Review 92:We had a warm friendly welcome. The rooms were adequate, clean and tidy.

Review 93:choice for breakfast was good, but hot food not as hot as could have been.

Review 94:Lovely room on quiet side with balcony. Good choice of evening meals. Very pleasant helpful staff.

Review 95:We were in room 21 for the first time on this visit. It has an adjoining door to the next room which is poorly soundproofed. One of the occupants of the next room could be heard snoring, and their young children woke us up quite early in the morning. The hotel staff could not offer us another room as the hotel was full, so their suggestion was that they could wake the snorer up....! The problem is not that the poor chap was snoring, it is the poor soundproofing. In the morning I complained at reception and was promised a call or an email. It never happened.

Review 96:Have stayed several times. Liked it because it is quiet and reasonable.

Review 97:The one complaint that we had was that while the bed was comfortable the pillows were very 'lumpy'

Review 98:Very friendly and efficient staff. Evening meals were of a good standard. Good size, well equipped bedroom

Review 99:Not bad and not a problem, but the carpet was worn out having several big rucks. Everything else was fine.

Review 100:Location delightful, comfortable bed, smiling staff, all very nice, and a small verandah on our room so we could sit outdoors in the shade. We had two hot days.

Review 101:Wi - fi was patchy - but they were on to it and had the engineers on call. Not the fault of the hotel therefore

Review 102:Friendly staff Nice location Good food For this size of hotel - you couldn't ask for more

Review 103:Very surly waiting staff both in main restaurant and bar area. did not like the makeshift breakfast area where it was all down to you unless you wanted a pot of tea. Food cold in both areas and nobody really interested.

Review 104:Lovely grounds and the domestic staff were superb.

Review 105:For the money I would have liked a bit more than the very basic coffee and tea making facilities. Most other hotels in this price bracket we've stayed in give you fresh milk and an assortment of hot drinks. Also the hotel construction was noisy - we could hear next door going to the toilet - yuk.

Review 106:Staff were friendly. Generally the hotel was nice.

Review 107:Although the reception and building exterior were pleasant, our room was looking tired (especially the bathroom). It also had a smoky smell despite having a no smoking designation. I assume it was converted from a smoking room but the carpet not changed.

Review 108:Staff were friendly and the communal areas were clean and neat.

Review 109:At the bar you could wait for no reason to be served which was a little frustrating. Bar prices a little high. Bacon and mushrooms at the buffet breakfast were undercooked on day one but much better on day two. Wifi slow and doesn't quite reach the sitting area outside the restaurant. If you're on EE you will need it as the signal isn't great there.

Review 110:Attentive staff and nice overall feel of an independent hotel. Complimentary movies was a bonus in the room.

Review 111:Bar staff in restaurant could be a little more motivated. Slow service and very few people

Review 112:Not the hotels fault but no phone signal for O2 or Vodaphone

Review 113:The bathroom needs to be updated.

Review 114:Proximity to Peppa Pig World (and lots of other kid-friendly places). There wasn't anything to dislike except the bathroom.

Review 115:Breakfast (cooked section) was a bit later arriving than the stated time, which wasn't perfect as I had to leave early but other than that a really nice hotel and excellent staff.

Review 116:Staff very helpful.

Review 117:The only bad thing was the en-suite bathroom. It wasn't cleaned to a high standard and is very dated, has painted tiles which have flaked away, wonky toilet seat and temperamental shower. TV could do with an upgrade.

Review 118:Bar/restreraunt area is very pretty, food and customer service is excellent, reception sells toiletries for the forgetful, bedroom nicely decorated and comfy bed. Pretty location.

Review 119:shabby bathroom, unorganised breakfast, if there is a wedding reception taking place you cannot use the bar and have to have drinks in the lobby after a certain time after the restaurant closes

Review 120:Location

Review 121:Wasp nest on balcony wife got stung early hours and reception nowhere to be seen when found didn't seemed bothered and bathroom needs a clean slip Matt needs replacing or a serious clean

Review 122:The lady who checked us in was very nice and welcoming

Review 123:If i was to be picky bathrooms could do with a bit of TLC as could the balcony but they were both fit for purpose

Review 124:The hotel was very welcoming, the staff were excellent, food was great , cleanliness and comfort were excellent too

Review 125:The bathroom was on the small side and had a shower curtain which clung to one whilst showering, which was a bit unpleasant. This is the only negative I found though!

Review 126:The decor The fantastic staff The restaurant The breakfast It was a hot day and we were offered a fan for our room as soon as we arrived, which could be brought at any time during the night if needed. I wish more hotels would offer this! Very impressed with the friendly, nothing-too-much-trouble service here! Breakfast was great with lots of both hot & cold choices and helpful staff.

Review 127:The bathroom could do with some updating.

Review 128:The room was a good size, very comfortable, the bed was great with lots of good pillows. The staff was very attentious and corteous, check in took less that 5 minutes. The restaurant on site was very good. The food was delicious, proper food cooked by a chef not the usual pub grub! I had a delicious slow roasted leg of duck. The staff was amazing! Service was brilliant. They also didnt charge us extra for a cot, which was already set up in the room for us when we arrived. Good location for Peppa Pig World. I would stay there again.

Review 129:We were unable to book a table for dinner as there was a large group in the hotel. We would have preferred it if we had been told this on arrival.

Review 130:The hotel was convenient for the Sir Harold Hillier Garden and for Romsey. There was plenty of parking.

Review 131:Lots of money for the weekend not worth it and one of the staff were very rude a couple of times and the breakfast is nothing to write home about

Review 132:Lovely looking place lovely bar and restaurant an evening meals

Review 133:Dirty hand rails on the bath. Room 37. Bizzy road outside.

Review 134:Great bar staff. Breakfast very good. Mis info on time to walk to Romsey.told 30min. Was over an hour.

Review 135:When we arrived a wedding was in full swing and we thought it would be the kiss of death to a good night's kip but we were taken through a set of double doors and magically all noise vanished. The room had a table and chairs outside and a lovely garden area which was a surprise as we had only booked a standard room.

Review 136:Wi-Fi was a little patchy in the rooms but don't let this put you off

Review 137:Scrupulously clean, lovely addition of a patio onto a private garden, excellent service

Review 138:Thoughtfully designed bedrooms with patios, good mattresses, spotless bathrooms and good high powered showers (with bath option). Nicely designed restaurant with good bistro style food. There was a prom the night we were there but amazingly we didn't hear it, either in the restaurant or in the bedrooms. They must have good soundproofing on their function room!

The Fine Print

Extra beds are only available in the Superior Double Room.
