Reviews for YHA Oxford
Review 1:Staff both efficient and friendly - good at giving information- demonstrating interpersonal skills- lounge very comfortable/ clean- other residents friendly
Review 2:Not obvious where things were at breakfast.
Review 3:Close to train station, friendly staff, well sound proofed from the outside world, warm on a very frosty night.
Review 4:Had to pay for a towel, and was not allowed to keep the receipt for this. Not a major expense, but a bit of a nuisance.
Review 5:Comfortable, warm and safe hostel in a good location. Friendly, efficient welcome on arrival.
Review 6:- No internet connection in the rooms. One has to be in the lounge. - Loud music in the lounge. - Two many doors to open to get to the room. Staying on second floor, had to open 5 self-closing doors (one using the key card). Think of it when you have both hands tied to luggage and you have traveled for quite some time to get there. - No elevator. - Cold room. - Noisy room due to traffic and rooms next to it.
Review 7:- Clean room. - Most of the staff was kind and helpful. - Lively and friendly atmosphere.
Review 8:unfriendly staff at the reception, everything for additional payment including sheets and towels, no free tea and coffee like in other european hostels. The only free - water in the kitchen!!! But the price nearly 19 GBP per bed is really high for such quality. It should include at least free drinks (tea and coffee) or at least free internet service at the hall.
Review 9:Location, 5 minutes from the train and bus stations, private bathroom
Review 10:Unhelpful tone and manner of check in woman ( mid evening 10.01.2016). Carpet and room seemed shabby compared to last time we stayed. Better to stay at a 3 star hotel.
Review 11:Breakfast Helpful and cheerful staff when we were checking out Location
Review 12:Kitchen often messy, dirty dishes left, surfaces not wiped, toilet leaked, no bath mat so pools of water on floor, lots of stairs & no lift- everyone who stays there has luggage!!No tea or coffee provided that I saw, everything cost, terrible WiFi to have to be in reception area to receive it, the carpet in my room had disgusting stains, so I felt the room was filthy, it looked filthy.
Review 13:Rooms were a good size, excellent storage areas in rooms, helpful staff, good variety of pots for cooking, proximity to town centre, bus & train stations excellent, nice to have individual bedside lights.
Review 14:The shower took almost 20 min to get hot water running(its winter, hot water is a must) and it was really tiny and the water presure was almost none. The worst shower ever! Internet only in the reception lobby. The bed is very bad quality and thin matress. Chek out is at 10am!
Review 15:the location is really good, right beside the train station and the reception has a nice bar and sofas to chill with a beer or tea. The room has a good size and its comfortable.
Review 16:Beds were very uncomfortable, but admittedly better than the floor of someone else's hotel room (only marginally though).
Review 17:Looked as though there were lots of good communal areas, but didn't get chance to experience much of these.
Review 18:The shower was very, very stiff to turn.
Review 19:Friendly staff, helpful, and quiet, warm accommodation. For a bonus you could leave your luggage on the checkout day so that you could spend time unencumbered.
Review 20:Private room good value. Cafe and breakfast were excellent. Staff very helpful. short walk into town center. On street parking was ok at the time we were there.
Review 21:Was terrified to find a bed bug in the room. Wifi only in the lobby. Merely edible breakfast. Questionable male staff (at the lobby) - there was a Hungarian gentleman watching tv, when the channel was changed he requested why - the guy replied cos its not a movie children can see. When the gentleman asked - there arent any children here and do they come here to the bar - the guy replied yeah they may come in some time so I cant allow you watch this channel. Now whether that's rude/polite/stupid/wise is up to the reader to judge - to me was unprofessional! The female staff were kind and polite!
Review 22:Next to the train station.
Review 23:We couldn't put our finger on it but there was a smell in the room if the window was left shut, as it was a relatively mild weekend this wasnt an issue. Downside to having the window open was hearing the cargo train at 4am..
Review 24:Excellent value for money, although not guaranteed we received free parking for 2 days in oxford city centre right outside the hostel.
Review 25:I arrived and I wasn't checked in until 2:30 .. No enough space in the fridge to put my stuff .. They have only small fridges.. Internet is only in the reception area not in the library or rooms !!
Review 26:Close to center
Review 27:Although big and easy to move around in, the kitchen is a bit lacking in refrigerator space, coffee making equipment, decent-sized mugs. The breakfast on offer had dismal eggs--wet and full of something other than eggs (sour cream? mayonnaise? -- not pleasant).
Review 28:The central location of the facilities inside is handy. Laundry, kitchen, lounge/cafe--all quite accessible. The staff are friendly and kind. The place also feels safe.
Review 29:But not the usual backpacker vibe, all the travellers seemed rather insular and not too social. Could of just been a few days introverted guests for the hostel though.
Review 30:Great place.
Review 31:You can't choose your roommates, which was a huge turnoff- the people in my room constantly argued about everything. Lack of privacy is an issue in every youth hostel though!
Review 32:Cheap and very, very good location, just around the corner of the train station
Review 33:I noticed a weird smell every day in the bedroom & hallways ,almost like a damp smell, maybe it was the cleaning chemical they use to clean bathroom/shower.
Review 34:The breakfasts were amazing, plenty to choose from. and very yummy
Review 35:Only some problem with the sound of train
Review 36:The room is very clean, the facility is comfortable, lication is excellent, and staffs are friendly and helpful! Overall I will give it 10 out of 10 based on this price ;)
Review 37:-room smells stinky.. - roomate very impolite. - bathroom and toilet smell really bad. - have to pay for key of the locker and it is unreasonable. Anyway it is my fault not to read about the facilities carefully
Review 38:Great location near rail station
Review 39:Lovely place to stay for sightseeing in Oxford City centre. Modern, clean, cozy, with a fab.bar/cafe and great music too. Staff? The best I've ever experienced, anywhere, beit a 5* hotel or Hostal. Friendly, warm, happy and pleased to help. They were mainly east European ladies, and a credit to their home Countries.
Review 40:We had not any idea about the time of check out was at 10am (amazing, first time we heard that) and someone from the hotel(very rude) came INSIDE our room to complaint about the time! A lack of respect. We had to pay for use tawels.
Review 41:Location
Review 42:-Unclean pillows -No wifi in the rooms -Some roommates can be strange and rude -No breakfast -They should put 4 people in a room at max. Squeezing in 6 people caused suffocation also due to poor ventilation inside the room.
Review 43:-Close to the train station -Reception called taxi in 2 minutes -Self catered kitchen -Open 24 hours
Review 44:No ensuite, bathroom was so basic and the toilet was broken.
Review 45:Good food, cheap drinks, great staff and a very central location for the Station and New Oxford theatre.
Review 46:Super close to the station and the reception was very helpful - they had a great cafe & couches downstairs, the rooms were big with lockers and you could hire/buy all the things you forgot - even hairdryers!
Review 47:The balcony was very wet under foot, but oily as well. So could do with different material and a clean.
Review 48:The staff were very polite and friendly and accommodating.
Review 49:Bed's weren't very comfortable but were good enough. Heating in room was very old and adjustable.
Review 50:Good basic hostel that's well priced for Oxford. Good kitchen facilities
Review 51:The hostel is right next to the train station which is very convenient. It's also not far from the city center - about 10 mins walk. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Clean room, bathroom and toilet. The shared toilets in the hall are very clean too.
Review 52:Having been a member since my teens Im used to hostelling including the very small & remote hostels but now in my old age I find the long flights of stairs in the modern hostels quite difficult !
Review 53:good access to trains &buses to enable me to view college chapels & museums Very helpful staff & nice shared rooms with ensuite washroom
Review 54:The shared bathroom with men and women
Review 55:The night staff were so great! They helped me with my presentation and also very funny people. Also, it was located in the perfect place where everything was
Review 56:Nothing
Review 57:I stayed 6 beds room but not small Very clean, warm, cozy &private cabinet Breakfast is a little bit expensive but worthy of money. I m on trip to UK, stayed 6hostels ,YHA is the best.
Review 58:Despite being next to the rail station, we didn't hear a train, really well insulated and sound-proofed. Excellent value for Oxford, very central, friendly staff, great facilities.
Review 59:I didn't know where to dry my hair not to disturb my roommates, I did it in a corridor.
Review 60:Kitchen and showers are always clean. Showers are en-suite, but there are more in a corridor. I met many groups of german children and professionals who are looking for accommodation. So you feel absolutely safe.
Review 61:Chang my room from ground floor to high floor even we have old person 75 years. , My mother. ( we check in early and they confirm ground floor )
Review 62:Staff is very kindness. Help us carry bag to the stair.
Review 63:Noise from the street and from the nearby train station. Filthy bathroom.
Review 64:Great service. Easy going, professional and informative staff. Clean bed sheets.
Review 65:The carpets inside the rooms needs cleaning
Review 66:The staff were friendly and the property was very close to oxford bus stop and train station inside the city center and the place was very neat and tidy.
Review 67:Our room faced the station, so it was a bit noisy with the windows opened in the morning
Review 68:Right next to the station. Very clean. Friendly staff. Great communal areas.
Review 69:there was a old dry patch on the celling of the bathroom, there was a few stains on the carpet
Review 70:I like the facility's and they have three room on ground floor for people with poor mobility the twin room that I had with on suite was very clean and did not smell there is a 24/7 café if you needed something to eat and drink and the breakfast for £5.25 was very well worth it. and its right next to Oxford Train Station less then 5 minuets walk away.
Review 71:I stayed in 6-bed dormitory and a toilet and shower booth came along. Having a bathroom and shower room in the room was not good in that I could hear all the sounds and noise from them, even in late night. Some girls came back to hostel late night around 0:00 and used bathroom and turn on the light which affected everyone already sleeping at the moment. It was no good.
Review 72:The staffs were kind and helpful. In some ways, they were kind of formal, in a uniform and talk to you politely and professionally.
Review 73:Self catering area chaotic with piles of clean / unclean crockery. Definitely would not self cater.
Review 74:Great location friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely return .. .
Review 75:Quite frankly, the other guests were loud enough in the night to wake us several times. Slamming doors, drunken arguments, coughing fits, etc.
Review 76:It's everything a hostel should be. Clean and cheerfully run, with a reasonably priced bar and dining room.
Review 77:Room smelled terrible as there was very little ventilation. Beds were okay
Review 78:Location was near city and train station. Breakfast was good, and the staff were really friendly.
Review 79:Sometimes in shared dormitories there are differences in what people consider to be polite behaviours. Knowing this, but very good ear plugs +/- an eye mask & be smug about the money you are saving on your bed!
Review 80:I stay at YHA Oxford extremely regularly & it is excellent. We were unlucky to have an extremely antisocial room mate in our dorm last week. The situation was handled sensitively & expertly by the staff so that the outcome for all concerned was satisfactory (the antisocial person was asked to leave the YHA after both sides of the story had been patiently listened to & an alternative accommodation was found for her by YHA staff.)
Review 81:It was very loud because of the location, we had to keep windows open because was hot and when trains were going pretty impossible to sleep. Also would be nice to have wifi in rooms, not only lobby.
Review 82:Friendly staff, good location, nice rooms
Review 83:The rooms it was share i didn't know and i find out when i arrive but it was only for 2 night i had some business in town so i stay because was the cheapest i can find near the station
Review 84:The location it was near the Oxford train station
Review 85:Quite basic (though realise it is a youth hostel), wouldn't say the price for a twin room was particularly 'budget'!
Review 86:Good proximity to train station, quite lively if you are looking for that. Communal space is fairly modern.
Review 87:The WiFi was pretty much non existent. It was only available in the lobby and the lobby was FULL of people such that it was hard to find a place to sit. With so many people trying to use the WIFI it basically would not work.
Review 88:The beds were comfortable, the room was spacious and the breakfast was satisfactory.
Review 89:Parking limited, still quite expensive for a Hostel and staff could be more friendly, but overall I would still recommend to stay for a night or 2.
Review 90:Good facilities and comfy beds. Stayed in a twin room with my friend and used the shared bathroom facilities. These were also at a good standard. Location was quite handy also.
Review 91:The toilet stopped working, which with 6 in the room wasn't great. I reported it to reception. The shower was tiny. Single facilities for a room of 6 is not enough and other bathrooms were not nearby.
Review 92:Convenient location.
Review 93:The dirty sock wedged down the side of my mattress and the stains on the carpet.
Review 94:The location was great as was being able to get rooms with 4 single beds.
Review 95:Warm in room so windows left ajar, but as so close to railway line and road was very noisy. Noisy guest in room who banged door & cupboard door many times in night, but it is a youth hostel after all, so not complaining!
Review 96:Close to railway station. A very good price for accommodation in Oxford. Clean & tidy with good range of food/drinks available.
Review 97:The bar service was always very slow, and they could really use a few beers on draught (bottles are over-priced and inconvenient). The staff were usually really lovely though.
Review 98:It's safe. You can't get into the section of the hostel where the rooms are without a keycard. It's secure. My room had a cupboard more than big enough for a pretty hefty bit of luggage. Good facilities: Though I was in a 6-bed dorm, there was a bathroom/toilet and separate shower within the room, meaning that it was much cleaner than communal ones. Clean: everything was clean all of the time. There are lots of little added features (info about Oxford in picture frames etc.) that add a nice touch. The wifi in communal areas was good. Some kids in the next room were being really loud at 3am. They're kids, fair enough, I was a nightmare at that age. But still, I wanted to sleep. So I knocked and told them to shut up, which they didn't do. So I went to the desk and told someone there. Within minutes, whomever it was had gone upstairs and sorted it out. Cheaper and a millions times better than Oxford Backpackers
Review 99:There's a slight smell in the restroom within our room.
Review 100:The room is quite spacious, which is quite important for travelers with big trunks like us. The common room is cozy and the staff are friendly and helpful. Love that they serve hot drinks 24/7.
Review 101:Not being able to sleep with people coming in during the night. One girl got upset with another lady and said she'd have her thrown out
Review 102:Convenient location for the station not the city centre
Review 103:The dining room, the leisure room were not very tidy and clean. Smell of food in the corridors and stairs Table lamps in my room did not work
Review 104:Friendly environment and staff
Review 105:No wi-fi in rooms Tap in shower dangerously stiff to turn resulting in almost severe burns
Review 106:Close to red bus. ..comfortable foyer with drinks food and wi-fi.
Review 107:I was unlucky with my roommates as they were extremely inconsiderate: they made a lot of noise and they let the lights on during the night, which was super annoying. I barely slept because of them! The room was good but the bathroom STUNK: I avoided to take a shower there, it was just smelling awful.
Review 108:The location was great: right next to the station and 15 min walk from the city centre. The lounge was great and there was possibility of getting a coffee or a snack until late.
Review 109:no wifi in the room and even in the ground floor common area it was not very good.
Review 110:really close to rail station and walking distance to bus station. toilet and shower in the room. i was staying in six-bed female dorm.kitchen's nice.
Review 111:Dirty sheets and cold showers. The place is busy but even at 5am there was no hot water and a line up for the shower. Unfortunately it's still the cheapest accommodation in Oxford.
Review 112:Upon arriving I was told by a member of your staff that I hadn't paid for a late check out, I showed him my confirmation email proving I payed for late check out and he still didn't accept it, upon arriving back to the venue at 2am I went to speak to the worker on the reception and he said it had already been paid and sorted. Obviously communication problems. Then upon going downstairs at 10am for a smoke we went back up to realise our door keys stopped working, luckily a member of our party was still in there, apart from this and the very squeaky uncomfortable beds everything was okay.
Review 113:Friendly,helpful, cheerful, hardworking staff. Clean bedding, room, en suite shower & w.c. Good value cafe/restaurant, on site. Study facilities. Pleasant patio garden for smokers. Next to Oxford train & bus station. Close to riverside walks - and all the local places of interest..
Review 114:N/A
Review 115:Friendly, talkative, helpful......Guests and staff. I'll be back, and will recommend the place. The Oxford central, and backpackers hostels are good, but the YHA is better
Review 116:No parking. Had to pay for towels. Very expensive for having a room that smelled like urine or a frat house at best, carpets were disgusting.
Review 117:Good location, friendly people.
Review 118:Sometimes other travellers aren't as good at doing dormitory living as others; snoring, alarms in the middle of the night, lights being switched on while you sleep are all hazards. Take ear plugs & an eye mask.
Review 119:Excellent accommodation in prime central oxford location. Fantastic staff, very friendly guests (foreign school groups, university lecturers, families) & comfortable standard of living.
Review 120:The room I occupied was a 6 person room facing the trains, they were very loud and when the window was shut it got very hot.
Review 121:Close to station and walk to centre of Oxford. Breakfast well organized and good variety of food.
Review 122:Beds are uncomfrtable, kept awake by constant doors that seemed to slam shut. Some doorrubbers would help, but as it was, it seemed that every door that shut vibrated around the entire building
Review 123:Close to station, neat appearance
Review 124:A little expensive
Review 125:Good full english breakfast for a good price which included coffee and/or tea and if I´m right also some continental breakfast items if you fancy
Review 126:The kitchen is kind of small and uncomfortable unless you are there completely alone.
Review 127:Good location. Some rooms have their own bathrooms. The hostel is very clean and the common areas are nice.
Review 128:- Even in the twin room with a private bathroom, no soap or shampoo was provided. - WiFi coverage is in urgent need of upgrade.
Review 129:- Location. - Breakfast and the kitchen staff.
Review 130:No in-room wifi
Review 131:We a group of four stayed in a four-bed private room. It's right next to the train station, only like 5min walk. The sofa in the lobby is quite comfortable, good place hanging with frds.
Review 132:Very helpful staff. Great to have hot drinks available all the time and well-priced. Lots of facilities available. Wonderful location close to centre of Oxford. Excellent stay!
Review 133:For standard of the accommodation it was expensive. We hired a room - a triple for two people but got a quad for two people. A double bed and a double decker bunk. This was the second dearest accommodation in 90+ days and it was the second worst out of all the accommodation we stayed at. Considering we had far better accommodation with towels et al at a far lower price it did make us wonder. I have stayed at International Youth Hostels before and this one compared to Dublin for example is bad. We were in a room on the ground floor with a corridor. It was extremely noisy through the night with people banging doors all night. I saw no signs asking people to be quiet near bedrooms. Also you could only use WiFi in the reception area and that is where everyone congregated in the evening so you had problem finding a seat to then access WiFi. I had to get access WiFi to get seats on flights organised.
Review 134:Convenience to railway station and town
Review 135:- WiFi available only in common areas but also very unstable- electricity plugs situated super-inconveniently, there is only a few and all of them are situated very low (which i.e. caused inconvenience when using a hair dryer). I was sleeping on the upper bunk and could not charge my phone during the night, because the closest plug was on the opposite wall (and you don't want to leave your stuff unattended in a hostel) - in my opinion 20 pounds is too much for a bunk in a dorm room, but this is pretty much the cheapest place you can find in ridiculously expensive Oxford - not very nice reading light -- it is located a bit aside and doesn't really help when reading -- so you have to twist your body a little bit to reach the light - situated very close to the railways, thus it can be pretty noisy any time of the say (also in the middle of the night). When you close the window, it doesn't help (and only makes it stuffy)
Review 136:- Friendly and helpful staff- nice common area with a bunch of comfortable cosy couches - clean toilet and shower room (looks like it was recently renovated) - nice location -- 2 minutes biking (5-7 minutes walking?) to the city center. City center is very easy to find. - a bunch of nice Asian (Chinese, Korean, Thai, etc) restaurants within 5 minute walk - reception opened 24/7 -- I could check out at 7am
Review 137:The constantly moving about of clients about was so unsettling and with my luggage it became tedious and monotonous, I don't see the logic of moving people about, t
Review 138:It was very professional I would say
Review 139:The helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. Actually a poor area but this not a problem. Rated location of hostel as 'good' because of proximity of station. Was not disturbed by trains though aware of them during sitting out in courtyard. Late for breakfast but nothing too much trouble for staff and an excellent one was provided.
