The George descritpion

Around 300 years old, The George provides comfortable accommodation for visitors to the historic town of Battle. You can visit the place where English history changed forever, and walk over the battlefield where William the Conqueror stood.
The George was established in 1699, but there has been an inn on the site for over 600 years. Previously the town hall of Battle, the George building was once a military court during the Napoleonic wars.
All rooms have been recently refurbished, and each features an en-suite bathroom, a TV, and tea/coffee making facilities. The suite room offers a hot tub.
The property is popular with wedding parties and tours, being within 5 minutes walk of picturesque Battle Abbey. Battle itself provides a great choice of restaurants and shops, while the seaside towns of Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea are less than 20 minutes drive away. Battle station also provides an excellent rail link to London, with direct access from Charing Cross and London Bridge stations.
Please note that the property has no lift. The George is strictly non-smoking.

Reviews for The George

Review 1:Rude staff, no one on reception when we arrived and no one answered the phone so couldn't check in. Wiring hanging down side of bed and expensive.

Review 2:Good location and bathroom.

Review 3:Noisy, floorboards creak so bad that you can hear every foot step of every guest!! A really bad nights sleep had. Beds are pretty uncomfortable, staff are non existent. Very strange set up of a seperate Italian restaurant on the ground floor and the hotel above. Doesn't seem to flow or feel welcoming at all. The only saving grace is that it was fairly cheap but I guess you get what you pay for.

Review 4:The reception desk wasn't manned and there was no way to contact anyone with a query or in an emergency.

Review 5:The room had been freshly decorated and the furniture etc was new. However it was a very basic hotel. It suited us for a night but it wasn't cosy or comfortable enough for a longer stay. It was good value for the money.

Review 6:For the price, not a lot. Easy to miss turn for parking lot

Review 7:Good location on the high street. Easy walk to the abbey. Thai and Italian restaurants on same grounds so good options for dinner. Very friendly reception staff

Review 8:Security felt a bit lax. Entrance to the hotel is via a back entry, not locked. the reception desk is not staffed. In theory anyone could get in and not be detected.

Review 9:In the centre of town. Car parking; although I understand it's not always available. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the TV and shower worked.

Review 10:The bathroom wasn't that clean! There was hair all in the shower plugs and sink, the toilet also could of done with some bleach!

Review 11:Room was comfortable and fully heated!

Review 12:A little bit chilly, radiators off on arrival and never achieved a 'toasty feel. No heating in the morning (November) Would think twice if the weather was very cold!

Review 13:Great location in the middle of Battle -very good for a range of restaurants, pubs and cafes. Room very clean, the absence of too many staff gives it a 'Travelodge' neutral feel - very restful. Very quiet, no noise at night. £25 cheaper than most other places and very good value. If you want hot rooms and bathrooms pay the extra £25

Review 14:Rooms smelt badly of cigarette smoke and the water pressure was non-existent in the showers. We had an attic room so this might have contributed

Review 15:Location was lovely and rooms were clean

Review 16:Overfamiliarity of staff member when checking in. I was greeted by my first name and told how lucky I was to get the room at that price. It would also have been nice if the 3 large spider webs had been removed from that room!

Review 17:Quiet room, comfortable bed, good location.

Review 18:Room was very small and poorly lit. Other than in the lobby, the WiFi didn't work. There was frequently no one at the front desk and when you call on the phone, the manager took quite some time to come down to the lobby. I saw several other guests waiting for him, one for 15 minutes.

Review 19:The bathroom was nice. Location was right in the center of town.

Review 20:steep stairs to room, rather noisy Italian next door ( is it a separate business or not?) very poor parking area, occupied by builders etc....room itself quite good, but the place needs major investment.

Review 21:Location, within easy walking distance of Battle Abbey....and we were there for the Hastings reenactment.

Review 22:The bathroom looks as though it is in the process of being refurbished but the bathroom suite is old and tired and the shower cubicle a bit small.

Review 23:The room was nice decorated and well furnished. Location is excellent and the atmosphere is good.

Review 24:Bathrooms last century and low down basic. Very english.

Review 25:Battle is a good starting point in Sussex ....Good hotel staff , Italian Restaurant right in the house , Deli right across the street for breakfast.

Review 26:No heating in the room and couldn't get heating on, stayed 31/10 with child and needed Warmth. Old sash windows which allowed a lot of condensation and with damp caused me to use my emergency inhaler as my chest was wheezy. Double bed wasn't a double and only big enough for one adult so I slept in a single bed (there were 2 singles and one so called double in the room). Shower was not great and broken tile on bathroom floor which could be dangerous for a small child. TV we could not get some channels including any ITV channels and as the World Cup rugby final was on the night, we were disappointed that we could not watch it. Also couldn't get free broadband to work as wouldn't pick up name or accept wifi code.

Review 27:Location good, friendly staff and lovely old building. Italian restaurant was nice. Tea and coffee facilities and free parking. Clean.

Review 28:Staff were rude and didn't care, the chef from the I house restaurant hit one of our cars whilst all 4 of use were stood next to it and fried to deny it. Rooms were unclean and you could not turn off the radiator, making our room a sweat box!!

Review 29:Getting out of the place!!!

Review 30:Only small negative cracked tile by toilet and small crack in basin.

Review 31:Lots of room, clean bedroom and bathroom ,comfortable bed, iron and board,TV good size, comfort leather sofa and quiet location.

Review 32:Nothing

Review 33:Very clean, very comfortable bed. Everything you need when travelling, kettle, iron and board, hair dryer, toiletries etc etc. Very good value.

Review 34:No lift to the upper levels made it hard to carry heavy luggage up and down the spiral stair case.

Review 35:Location to the Abbey and shops was great. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 36:We expected a pub/hotel but the restaurant downstairs was a different business. Access to the hotel is via the car-park and the reception area is very makeshift and uninviting.

Review 37:The hotel is very central and has off-street parking. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Good value for the price.

Review 38:The shower was a water saving one with overkilland terrible water pressure, barely a dribble. It took me almost 5 min just to rinse off all the soap there was so little water. Didn't feel like I could get clean whilst there.

Review 39:Very clean and tidy. Polite and helpful staff. Beautiful view of Battle from my window. The room had an ensuite with a bath which was lovely.

Review 40:The staff wasn't inform on the touristic resources of the village, the mattress was old and uneven.

Review 41:Really close to Battle Abbey, you can park your car and go walking.

Review 42:The room was a bit out of date, pretty clean, although we just didn't really settle in that well. It just wasn't for us.

Review 43:The staff were welcoming on arrrival. The location was perfect for an event we were attending. Great price.

Review 44:I booked a family room (1 double and 1 single bed). On arrival I was told that the room had 3 singles (having booked the room 3 weeks before our stay, it would have been courteous to be contacted and told about this in advance). The room was BOILING and we were unable to open the windows. The car park was jam-packed and we had to park on the street - perhaps the hotel should be checking that the cars parked in the car park are all staying at the hotel. We also feel that 10am is too early for the checkout time and didn't appreciate the staff knocking on the door to 'hurry us up'. Also no option for breakfast and it would have been thoughtful to have a hot chocolate option, for our son, with the refreshments considering that it was a family room.

Review 45:The location was perfect.

Review 46:No Breakfast provided. They advised they had a "deal" with Battle Bakes and Cakes over the road and that if we mentioned we came from the hotel we would get the deal. There was no discount for gests. The wait was long (even though they were half empty) and the food was partly re-heated and awful. Also there not open on Sunday (not that we would have gone back). Even B&B's provide breakfast this is not real on.

Review 47:Large clean room. (Room 2)

Review 48:Someone (the proprietor/manager?)started to crash around each morning in the room above mine from 4.15am onwards and the fire alarm went off one evening just before midnight. No breakfast available.

Review 49:Good central location with good secure parking. Reasonably priced so good value for money

Review 50:zero facilities in the hotel. Outside of the room it was dingy and in need of a massive amount of repair. Wifi which was supposed to be free rarely worked

Review 51:Bed and Bathroom were fine and the location is good. It was cheap

Review 52:No breakfast included or available. But don't let that put you off. Across the street is a Deli that opens at 0830 and serves up a good breakfast at a very reasonable price.

Review 53:The room was clean and fresh. The bed comfortable and the bathroom was also clean and had a decent shower. The room even boasted an iron and ironing board. Everything worked as it should.

Review 54:Wifi didn't work. No breatfast and no where in town for anything before 8 30 apart for local supermarket. No shower curtain.

Review 55:Cheap and cheerful good for 1 night. Usb plugs in the bedroom

Review 56:See above

Review 57:Photo's on website bare no relation to the actual property. Very questionable wiring on stairs. Room was gloomy and poorly furnished. Bathroom looked only just clean. Reception is unmanned and you talked to a person on a phone. When someone did appear he looked like one of the munsters and was heavily covered in metal. Car parking is not available due to the next door resturant and guests are expected to park in a public car park more than half a mile away. With replaced joints and not being in the first flush of youth, this is unacceptable. We left the property and stayed in a proper hotel. These premises are no more than a glorified doss house. I will assuredly be advertising my discontent on my media pages.

Review 58:Very basic. Rubbish shower; too low and no curtain so couldn't wash my hair and the room got all wet. Lots of noise from the road outside.

Review 59:Great location and a nice purple carpet.

Review 60:A tile was lose in bathroom & floorboard in bedroom, but otherwise fine

Review 61:Great little cheap hotel. Super easy to find. Car park was full, but we parked on the street out front because we arrived after 6pm.

Review 62:Not very personal. Just a room in a building. Not suitable if you like to have a chat to staff/receptionist as there isn't one. They are certainly not big on customer relations, but room ok.

Review 63:Location and good size room. Value for money. Breakfast at the bakery over the road is recommended.

Review 64:Beds were not dressed at bottom with tears on Base and toilet rail was off wall because shower screen wouldn't open otherwise. Also no conditioner replenished and wifi didn't work atall.

Review 65:Nice location nice old fashioned entrance. Stairway was nice but not used to full potential. Guy at desk helpful. Nice clean bed.

Review 66:Carparking situation is poor. Access to carpark is narrow and meant for horse and carriage! You only know when the carpark is full once you have entered it and checked that there are no spaces between the otherwise tightly packed cars. Then there is the nightmare of having to negotiate yourself back out again. Lots are supposed to be for hotel residents only, but given the size of the hotel and how full the carpark was, it suggests that this rule is not being enforced - staff seem indifferent to the situation when I explained that I had discovered that staff/clientele of a nearby restaurant were using the lots.

Review 67:Bed was comfortable and room spacious. High street location is convenient for shops.

Review 68:Noisy til late. Spoke to staff member who asked about our stay - indifferent response - no comment! No breakfast included in room cost of £90 - which makes it overpriced.

Review 69:Leaving! And the meal downstairs in the Italian restaurant.

Review 70:There was no wi-fi.

Review 71:3-star hotel in the centre of Battle - 2 minutes walk from Battle Abbey. Be aware there is no breakfast, but plenty of options on the High Street. Staff were friendly and rooms were clean.

Review 72:We did not realise that our room would not be cleaned each day, though it was not a problem, would have been nice to know. This meant tea and coffee not topped up either. Room was on road, so could not keep window open, but noise did get quieter late at night.

Review 73:Good location, off street car parking, room fine Great Thai restaurant next door

Review 74:no breakfast *available* - needs to be very clear in blurb that this is the case

Review 75:room clean & modern...en-suite bathroom only had shower, no bath, but blurb failed to mention

Review 76:That in room 21 the bath is only a bath, no shower head, which can be inconvenient. Some toothpaste in the rooms also would be a nice touch.

Review 77:I only book at the George when I go down to Battle. The staff is nice, the hotel is beautiful, I love its quirkiness and crookedness it has an old mystical feel to it, it goes perfectly well with the town itself. The rooms are great, the beds are very comfortable.

Review 78:No restaurant/bar on site. Not met on arrival - had to ring to get staff to check us in. No telephone in our room - if we needed someone we would have had to go down four floors to ring someone on the telephone, and then walk back up four floors to our room. No fire safety information, no identification of fire exits or an assembly point - a legal requirement I believe for all hotels/boarding houses/etc. Bathroom - grout on floor tiles loose and in some places non-existant. Mouldy hair in the bath plug-hole, no plug for the sink, no shower curtain - making the floor very slippery after showering, shower was either scalding or freezing, and turned into a dribble when the shower head was lifted overhead. Bedroom - clearly not one of the 'all rooms recently refurbished' - wall paper peeling, mould next the wardrobe, filled areas of plaster next to the wardrobe, iron burns x2 in the carpet, curtain held on with 3 curtain hooks and like a sheet with a bit of lace around the edge - did not fit the window. Lumpy pillows, duvet too small for the bed.

Review 79:The Thai Restaurant opposite the door to hotel reception. The stairwell. Male staff member was polite. Clean towels and sheets.

Review 80:We couldn't get a signal on our phones or wifi connection despite there being details for the hotel wifi in our rooms. Showers were weak. Also no breakfast, having said that right across the road there is a small supermarket and there are several pubs nearby for lunches and evening meals.

Review 81:We were two families in one triple room and one double with a single (rooms 12 and 13). They were modern, clean, bright and with very comfortable beds. We were so pleasantly surprised having read some awful reviews of this place. We got great value for money and would visit again. If you are looking for large bedrooms with simple but clean amenities, this is your place.

Review 82:Small carpark and information pack needs updating as wifi information is incorrect and checkout was 10

Review 83:I booked a single room but was up graded to a double free of charge

Review 84:Initially no bath in room as expected. Subsequent room change was a.) smelling of curry b.) above an Italian restaurant so hot and noisy. The one member of staff was verging on indifferent to rude. With just a reception, one member of staff and several bedrooms I would not classify the George as a hotel. I.e. No bar, no restaurant.

Review 85:Location in town

Review 86:Parking was limited & we had difficulty reversing out when we realised there was no room left. Armchairs were a bit grubby. Didn't do breakfasts and as it was Sunday morning, nowhere opened early enough for us.

Review 87:Location. The receptionist was helpful. Comfortable bed.

Review 88:Fire doors all seemed to be propped open by fire extinguishers!!

Review 89:Fantastic location for our needs. Clean and comfortable and very good ensuite facilities. Large room with adequate storage. Free parking.

Review 90:Size of the beds. Would have been nice to have been offered say a little continental breakfast, perhaps a drink and a roll for the £70 we paid.

Review 91:Amazing position in the centre of Battle. Quirky throughout, from greeting and service to the half decorated hallways. Faded grandeur. Handwritten notices. Three beds in our room which seemed rather shorter than normal ones. Clean though and everyone was willing to help.

Review 92:The George Hotel is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The main entrance is at the back next to a pile of unwanted chairs, old bed heads and variouse other pieces of broken furniture, the paint is peeling off the window frames and the entrance is rundown and dilapidated? The so called entrance desk is unmanned, the room was basic and the bed was well used, it is very expensive considering it does not supply any food. I normal rely on reviews but on this occasion did not look at them, bad mistake.

Review 93:The position In Battle high street is the only thing good about the George.

Review 94:The entrance is very bland and was not staffed. We had to make a call to arrange for a staff member to greet us. No-one there when we left.

Review 95:Very central for Battle and suited our purpose very well.

Review 96:No fire regulations, water not provided, lighter found in the bathroom too expensive No Breakfast Sunday no where open to get breakfast

Review 97:The mattress

Review 98:High Street very noisy from very early ( not the hotels fault). First impressions of entrance and reception are not good though the rooms are nice enough, no breakfast available

Review 99:Decent Parking, good location, bed was comfortable, bedroom very pleasant

Review 100:No parking available when we arrived and the very inaccessible car park when full is very tricky to manoeuvre out of! Staff did not advise where alternative parking was. Information on website would have been useful.

Review 101:Room functional but recently painted and bright, unlike photos. Brilliant location. Beautiful staircase. Disappointed no common space available at all, as downstairs occupied by pizza restaurant. Has there been a change in management?

Review 102:The property looked like it was in the middle of refurbishment. Reception had no one sitting there, you had to ring for assistance and then wait. Our room was the fire exit, lock on door a bit dodgy. No breakfast.

Review 103:Excellent location. Room was clean and comfortable. Receptionist was very helpful (when he arrived)

Review 104:The reception is not manned (can be called by telephone from the desk) and no one is there from 9 o'clock in the evening. Felt very vulnerable in the evening as hotel is left open until the Italian restaurant closes. This is not part of the hotel. There is no breakfast available onsite. (not known at the time of booking. There were noises coming from the ceiling floorboards which sounded like rats. The smell from the Italian kitchen was overbearing as was the noise from their extractor fans. Not a great stay

Review 105:The Price and location

Review 106:Attic room so lots of stairs I.e.no lift. No breakfast. Bath too small for comfort, I'm only 5.4. No power in the shower.

Review 107:Freedom to come and go. Free parking. Very comfortable bed. Very clean.

Review 108:Room like a cell, like a backpackers hostel, single room too small, scruffy, only one towel supplied, had to argue for breakfast as booked, not nice.

Review 109:Parking places are a bit difficult to get into with a big car

Review 110:Large comfortable room, clean, and tidy. Modern comfortable beds (so many older UK hotels have old creaky beds, great to see one invest in new beds). Ideally situated in the centre of the town.

Review 111:We upgraded our booking from an attic room to a queen bed - it was a 1970s bed with mirrored ceiling which felt old and skanky. the bed matress was disgusting, the mattress was stained and we were itching. We resolved by using our own sleeping bags for bedding. No customer service. Paid cash on arrival and was quickly approached within an hour by the same man To pay again. Meager towels and amenities In rooms. No one ever around to ask questions and no information about when breakfast was. It felt sad and fell below mediocre.

Review 112:nothing good about the George

Review 113:not bad as such just found our stay a little bit impersonal whitch was ok but no one asked if room was ok did we have any problems maybe offer a discount if we ate in your restaurant which we did. this is not a complaint just an observation.

Review 114:room was good location for abbey was spot on very pleased with our stay enjoyed weekend

Review 115:Staff can be a bit unavailable for reception so don't leave it till last minute if you need to talk to them, but they're nice. Clean room, quiet (over backstreet)

Review 116:The room was not up to our expectations in terms of cleanliness and the quality of the facilities considering the price of the room. Also no breakfast provision at all which should have been available considering the price. Towels not renewed for the second day.

Review 117:We liked the location and the size of the triple room. The convenience of having an Italian restaurant within the building.

Review 118:Tiny car park, very limited parking. No visible staff unless you phone them. To check in and get your key you need to phone them from a desk on the reception desk. You also have to pay upfront to even get your key, obviously have a lot of issues with people not wanting to pay the whole amount when they check out. You are then told any issues you should call a number that they give you on a business card!! On the face of it our room looked lovely but the shower in the bathroom was disgusting, had a number of dark pubes on the floor of the shower and and it was just filthy. I took pictures to show the guy who had checked us in and he wouldn't even look at my photos, said that he knew about the issue with our room and I would have to talk to a manager about it. When I asked to see a manager he said that the manager was in a hotel in Hastings!! When I asked why he would give us a room when he knew about the disgusting shower he said that he wanted me to see it so that I would complain to management and they might then sort it out!! I called the manager and got a refund of £20 but wasn't given another room so we couldn't shower throughout our stay.

Review 119:Small room.had to wait about 10 mins at reception desk in dull dark corridor until someone came to see us.dusty room.v high step into shower.

Review 120:V comfy bed.quiet room

Review 121:Good location, with the freedom to please yourself without having to conform to set times, as the hotel doesnot have any catering facilities, but plenty of choice of places to eat within 2 minutes walk. We had a peacefull room. Good value.

Review 122:Shame no food at hotel but we knew that when we booked so really not a problem. Room was cold and heating didn't work but Talik very quickly provided us with heaters so this really isn't a complaint.

Review 123:Location and comfort of room.

Review 124:Not many facilities but as it is in such a central position everything I needed was within a minutes walk.

Review 125:Very good value for money. My single room was larger and more comfortable than many double rooms I have stayed in.

Review 126:No hot water was in my room at night so I was not able to take a shower. The bathroom window had no blind or curtain, rather offputting.

Review 127:The bed was comfortable. Nice view as I was in the attic room. Room was bright and decorative which was pleasing to the eye. Close shops nearby.

Review 128:Reception was abysmal , no one to greet you and it was dirty.Had to pay before we had even seen the room and told to just put the keys in the box. When I booked it didn't say there were no facilities for breakfast. Fire exists were blocked with ladders. Wouldn't stay there again.

Review 129:bed was clean and comfortable

Review 130:Receptionist, with piercings in nose, ears, eyes, looked unprofessional. No breakfast. Creaking floorboards. Hotel would have looked good, 50 years ago. Bad value for money. Irritating noise of air extractor outside.

Review 131:Central location. View of abbey from my window. Good internet.

Review 132:The confirmation was misleading in that it informed us of breakfast on a weekend at no extra charge. There was no breakfast and the room was only made up for one guest. I had to ask for more towelsand pillows. An overpriced substandard hotel.

Review 133:stunning staircase to carry bags up but quite wide. At time of visit no breakfast on offer even though advertised.

Review 134:very clean and fresh. Helpful staff. True triple and quite spacious.

Review 135:The shower in the bath was a bit European style for my liking (the ones where you have to hold the shower head), but wasn't really a major issue for me.

Review 136:Great hotel, really friendly staff. I traveled with a bike and they found somewhere safe to lock it overnight. The bed was really comfy, and the attic room I had was freshly decorated, very clean and fresh.

Review 137:Really dated, horrible smell on arrival. I wasn't told my room was a fire exit and didn't expect someone to walk down the fire exit stairs outside my room whilst I was getting dressed. On the Sunday no one could work out why no staff on hand or why the small area for breakfast was locked. I was asked to pay on arrival this is probably why. I probably wouldn't have thought much of the breakfast if given the choice!

Review 138:Bathroom had been modernised.

Review 139:No parking have to pay for it in town carpark , very very noisy outside and inside , wifi is useless , no breakfast , steep stairs , had the worst night sleep ever

Review 140:There was no milk on arrival and no toilet paper to replace the roll when we ran out but this was rectified the next day. The heating was off in the late afternoon when my daughter returned early and it was very cold.

Review 141:Convenience of location and the restaurants and co op close by was an added bonus. The room was comfortable and the bath was very welcomed.

Review 142:The flush system on the toilet was not easy and a small refrigerator would be a definite plus! The staircase needs lights during the day as well as at night.

Review 143:The position with its availability to eating places, free parking and in the centre of the town. The George is obviously being refurbished as it was taken over by new owners recently.
