Reviews for Claverton House
Review 1:It was a very cold day and on walking in felt very cosy and welcoming. The food was lovely and the breakfast more than expected. If we had to come to the area again we would stay again.
Review 2:Staff really welcoming and accommodating , I requested room service which they said was no problem , upgraded me to the kingsize room complimentary even though I paid reduced rate from Internet .
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:We booked a last minute overnight stay in a small double. Very comfortable room and food was wonderful both the evening meal and breakfast. We have stayed in hotels at twice the price and half the enjoyment, will stay again.
Review 5:I thought the food menu was over priced and I would have liked a bath rather than a shower. I was also keen to see the Koi carp but this was closed off.
Review 6:The remote location and the style of the property
Review 7:A little difficult to find as Bluemans Lane doesn't appear on satnav. It's just off A21 - a 50mph road - and hotel sign is positioned just AFTER Bluemans Lane and too small to read until you've passed it, with nowhere to turn for a further mile or so.
Review 8:Parking on site. Opening bedroom windows! Good decor/furnishings. Comfortable bed/linen. Spotlessly clean. Good range toiletries provided and generous tea making. V good breakfast menu.
Review 9:The bed in our room was very hard but have stayed in other rooms where this is not the case
Review 10:The location is great, quiet and secluded The food is excellent
Review 11:Just us being picky, nothing that ruined our stay but I kept banging my head on the sink cupboard over the sink when brushing my teeth and the shower head adjuster was broken so the shower wouldn't go higher so had to have a low shower and crouch under it.
Review 12:The hospitality was outstanding, very welcoming and gave us our space to come and go as we liked. We stayed in the Darwin room which was beautiful with a lovely view into the garden and a very comfortable bed. The breakfast was amazing and the service couldn't be faulted. Will definitely stay here again!!!!
Review 13:I read some previous reviews about the location, i.e. it was difficult to find and the turning into the lane and main A21 are dangerous. Dangerous only if you are a poor driver, we had absolutely no problems at all.
Review 14:Beautiful room, clean, quiet location. Perfect for a getaway from a big city. Staff very friendly and helpful. Took only breakfast there, and that was superb. I will stay again.
Review 15:I wouldn't rate this hotel 5 star as advertised. Our suite of rooms, although very clean, did not have 5 star standard facilities i.e. the bathroom was rather out of date, as was the decor, the bedrooms were cramped and the beds too soft by contemporary hotel standards.
Review 16:The location was good and the staff very pleasant. The breakfasts were excellent too.
Review 17:I needed somewhere quick as I had a family funeral to go to and didn't know the area as I live in the north. Arrived early evening and was made very welcome. Very comfortable rooms, good facilities, nice grounds, quiet and good location. Great breakfast.
Review 18:A beautiful country house hotel located 5 mins drive from Battle.spotless and elegant rooms.friendly and welcoming staff .great breakfast choices with locally sourced produce . lovely gardens.
Review 19:Lovely house with excellent, attentive staff. Great room, bed very comfortable, great facilities in the room (tea/coffee, TV etc.& minibar) & an excellent breakfast! Just what we were looking for really. Many thanks
Review 20:The only slight negative is the road access - slightly perilous trying to leave the property!!
Review 21:The location was beautiful, such picturesque grounds. We were looked after by happy and friendly staff, who had great local information to share. Finally, the breakfast was delicious!!
Review 22:We didn't have a bad experience but I think the house and rooms need decorating - the paint work in our room and en-suite was quite shabby.
Review 23:The friendliness of the staff. It was nice to have breakfast cooked to order. The house is lovely as is the garden. T
Review 24:Although our room was really nice it was very warm even with the radiator turned off.
Review 25:Very friendly welcome, lovely house and grounds, good range of food to choose from for breakfast, helpful and friendly staff. Ideal location for our vineyard tour.
Review 26:It was all good. Our room was on the cosy side, but we expected that from the description.
Review 27:Slightly quaint and different hotel. Staff/owners were very attentive and the food was excellent.
Review 28:The room was very warm on a particularly mild Autumn night
Review 29:We stayed here because of its close proximity to the Carr-Taylor Vineyard which is a 20 minute walk away. The hotel staff were lovely, our deluxe double room was well-equipped, clean and had a view over the beautiful garden. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great...would definitely recommend this gorgeous Country Hotel!!!!!!
Review 30:Compact Double Room is as stated. Fold down suitcase rests and a small compact chair would have made it a more comfortable stay
Review 31:Excellent location for a visit to Carr Taylor Vineyards
Review 32:Everything was great - beautiful location, lovely little compact room (didn't realise there was no chair/desk but not to worry) Great breakfast selection. Nice tea/coffee/hot chocolate/biscuit selection. Would definitely stay again if down that way and price remains great value... Only gripe - some areas were a bit dusty in the bedroom (eg lampshade and tea/coffee table)
Review 33:the fact that we only booked for 1 night....... when we return we will most definatly be staying much longer
Review 34:Everything,.... what is there not to like. the four poster bed was amazing the room was just so fresh, compfortable and just what we both needed for a lovely break away. All staff were approachable and the breakfast was to die for. The grounds were just beautiful with added bonus of koi carp to look at the wild bunnies entertaining us on the lawns.
Review 35:Staff made you feel very welcome, stayed in the two bedroomed garden suite which was great.like home from home.Best breakfast ever with all local produce.Higy reccomended.
Review 36:The room was quite shabby really, cracked sink, dusty lampshades, cracked electrical point. The shower did not have any shelving for toiletries. The owner has e-mailed us confirming our comments and apologising for the state of the room.
Review 37:The breakfasts were lovely. The bed was very comfortable, and the type of TV was high standard.
Review 38:To be fair we booked small room, but didn't expect that small. Room not suitable for older people. Very clean, but property overall looking a little tired.
Review 39:Great breakfast. So much potential.
Review 40:The complete experience was very pleasurable. we were made to feel very welcome and the food was the best we've ever eaten. We will certainly be going again.
Review 41:people in room above stomping up and down till late and snoring also other peoples TVs too loud when we are trying to sleep.
Review 42:lovely location and dedicated owners
Review 43:I booked this hotel as a quite gettaway having just got married and informed the hotel of this yet when we arrived and during our stay not one member of staff mentioned it, yet it only has half a dozen rooms! We were met by a man who checked us in stating that we hadn't paid but it was alright to pay when we checked out which I thought odd. He then said that the woman who appeared on the stairs would show us to our room and I thought that she was one of the chambermaids. We were asked if we wanted a table in the restaurant Saturday evening as they get booked up therefore having looked at the menu asked for a table. We were told a table was free at 7.30 but when I asked for one at 8 the lady said oh ok I suppose that would be fine. Strange as when we arrived there was only 4 other diners and 2 of them weren't even residents. The bedroom was dusty and during our stay the towels were just picked up off the floor and hung up. 2 were even left hanging over a chair. For me it was a 3 star B & B wanting to be the Grand Hotel. The decor was looking shabby in places and the ceiling in our bedroom had seen remediation work carried out and there seemed to have been issues with damp on one of the walls in the restaurant.
Review 44:The food was good and breakfast was a very good meal cooked to order.
Review 45:Only small negative was that they don't really cater for small children in the restaurant, only provided a pasta dish at a adult portion and adult price, so for 4 year old is was an expensive meal that was hardly eaten as it was a adult portion size
Review 46:Lovely hotel, very friendly staff, fantastic dinner and breakfast, loved our garden suite room
Review 47:Friendly welcome All facilities offered were available No problem that we arrived in the morning to leave the car and check in later Comfortable beds and excellent breakfast
Review 48:We lost internet connection at midnight and there were'n't enough plug sockets in the room . We had trouble plugging in the hairdryer.
Review 49:The four poster bed was soo comfortable. The bunny rabbits in the garden were adorable. The view of the garden from our room was a dream. Fantastic country location near the village of Sedlescoombe. Breakfast was delicious with a large selection of anything that you wanted and local apple juice... mmmmm.
Review 50:I liked the welcome I received, the courteous attention at breakfast, the cosiness of my room, and the restful atmosphere of the elegant, Edwardian home.
Review 51:leaving after 2 nights
Review 52:The location was very nice and the Greetings on arrival were supberb. A larger sign for the Property would assist travellers from further away like ourselves as the lanes are narrow.
Review 53:No bad experience. All great
Review 54:The staff were brilliant. Everyone went out of their way to make sure our stay was most enjoyable. Food great. Plenty of choice. Very restful. We could not ask for more.
Review 55:I tried to change the date of my booking to the following week, as I'd been invited to a surprise 80th Birthday party for a very old friend from Birmingham who's been very ill. The hotel said no, I had to pay a 50% cancellation fee. As they wouldn't have lost money, this was mean spirited. I couldn't afford to lose this money so I had to stay with booking and miss seeing my friend. I was not happy about this and it spoiled my time at the Hotel..
Review 56:Stayed in garden suite and had everything we needed. Very quiet location but still near main roads. Staff unobtrusive but helpful if you needed them. Breakfast experience wonderful.
Review 57:We had the compact room which was tiny and the only place we could sit was on the end of the bed which had about two foot of space. You could not walk around the bed. The toilet was so close to the door you hit your head leaning forward. In essence the en suite was tiny and the room was just over two foot longer than bed where bed was and about four feet max wide rest of room. I think it was probably smallest room stayed in. We were very disappointed having seen other rooms. Even though cheaper it was still disappointing and about thirty pounds over priced
Review 58:Breakfast
Review 59:We had only one problem which was with the lack of signage, and the concealed entrance to Bluemans Lane. Finding the lane entrance can be quite challenging until you are familiar with the turning, and exiting can difficult as it is a blind spot. Perhaps signs warning traffic on the A21 that the turning is coming up could assist with both problems?
Review 60:Everything was excellent from the beautiful house and grounds to the wonderfully polite and attentive staff. The breakfast was extremely good and plentiful with lots of choice and very fresh local produce. We had a delightful stay, and would love to be able to stay again at Claverton House.
Review 61:The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in at a hotel.Polite and helpful staff, lovely food, beautiful gardens and room outlook...very pleasant and would definitely return
Review 62:There was nothing to not like a1*****
Review 63:You are left in peace to get on with your stay, if you need help orinformation it was available at reception. The Claverton House isbeautifully decorated and very clean. The garden is well maintained andthe breakfast was tasty with all local products. A wonderful stay and wewill be returning.
Review 64:I sleep on a Simmons multi-pocket sprung mattress at home which is perfect for me. It gives a little and then holds you there. All hotel beds seem too hard to me and my back hurt until I got home.
Review 65:Nice and welcoming. We were immediately put at our ease. The food was really special, locally sourced and the fresh fruit at breakfast was brilliant. I'm hard to please re puddings but liked a number on the menu. I loved the local cheese and the artisan ice-cream. We enjoyed walking round the garden.
Review 66:Clean Friendly and comfortable hotel nicely presented breakfast with good local produce served. Although in very close proximity to the busy A21 it was a quiet hotel.
Review 67:Breakfast was amazing. Local produce and very fresh. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. The house was spotless and tastefully decorated.
Review 68:The property is well set back from the A21 road, but in hot weather with the windows open, background traffic noise was an issue in our room. No soap provided in bathroom.
Review 69:Access to extensive and well-maintained grounds. Convenience of car-parking. Well presented breakfast.
Review 70:None
Review 71:We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the well kept gardens, location to Battle and surrounding areas of historical interest was main reason we picked this hotel.
Review 72:I feel concerned that the beautiful big Koi Carp, who are in good condition, are kept in such a small pool which they can just about swim around in circles in. With the size of grounds this lovely house has got surely the size of their living area could be increased.
Review 73:The " bunnies " playing in the dark was a joy to see.
Review 74:Just everything. Sitting in the garden is like the garden of Eden.Staff could not be more pleasant. You come and go as you please ,you are completely private.
Review 75:Only complaint double bed in garden suite was uncomfortable and it got very hot at night A fan in the room would have been great
Review 76:Staff were lovely chef is a genius!nothing was too much trouble you must stay here!
Review 77:The bed was too hard for me, duvet & pillows need replacing they've lost some of their fullness. A bedroom chair would be handy and a wardrobe, I had to put my clothes on the floor. I was in small front room. The food was too expensive, it appeared to be microwaved frozen food, with not great quality chicken. I know the 'hotel' say it's just for people who don't want to travel out to eat, but good quality fresh food is expected at £11 plus a dish. Complimentary water in the room would be a good touch too.
Review 78:Lovely to see a family of bunnies running on the lawn. Very clean and tidy but more of a B&B with evening meal available. Great local cheese selection and lovely fruit selection for breakfast.
Review 79:Lack of signs and a lane sign having been knocked down made it very difficult to find the correct turn off from the main road on a dark and rainy night returning from a meal in Battle
Review 80:Convenient for access to Battle and Hastings Breakfast is excellent with a lot of thought having gone into using fresh, local ingredients Owners were very helpful in directing me to a local garage to get a faulty headlight repaired The garden is very attractive
Review 81:Nothing.
Review 82:It was by far one of the nicest bed and breakfasts we have stayed at and the breakfast was superb, we would definitely go back and recommend to others.
Review 83:The garden is beautiful and very peaceful. We enjoyed watching the rabbits on the grass while having dinner. The food was great and the service was friendly without being overbearing.
Review 84:There was nothing we didn't like.
Review 85:The house is situated just off a main road making it easily accessible. The gardens are beautifully maintained even with the wild rabbits around. Our room was large and inviting at the back of the house away from any noise. A fab large double bed with a very nice ensuite.
Review 86:The blind spot due to the thick hedge on the right leaving the lane to get on to the busy A21.
Review 87:Lovely friendly hotel set in beautiful surroundings. The breakfast was amazing. Would certainly recommend this hotel.
Review 88:Difficult to find the hotel, it says it is in Battle (according to Bookings.com) but in fact is much nearer to Sedlescombe. Bluemans Lane is on top of you before you know it and the sign for the hotel is quite small. If it helps those without SatNav (like us) there is a garden centre nearby which is a good landmark.
Review 89:We liked everything about Claverton House and our stay. Our room was very comfortable and clean. The food was excellent for dinner and breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. The grounds are secluded and parking no problem.
Review 90:Nothing.B
Review 91:I was upgraded on arrival and given personal service. I had a wonderful night's sleep in my 4 poster bed. After a very long journey I just needed to rest. This was no problem at Claverton House. Breakfast was superb and kept me going all day.
Review 92:Photos misleading thought this was bigger. The country house is exactlythat not a big hotel.
Review 93:Good solid furniture and amazing bed. Food was delicious.
Review 94:We stayed in a "compact double" and you could barely open the bathroom door. I was shocked when we were showed the room which cost £125, I think it's worth £50-60, it was tiny , you could barely get round one side of the bed. I didn't complain because we were in a rush, but I will write to the property. I think they adjust their prices according to days of the week, but my mum has a BnB in Glastonbury and her rooms are three times the size for a third of the price. SO overpriced, but perfectly pleasant.
Review 95:Staff welcoming, all very easy.
Review 96:This is just a comment, we have stayed in many B and B places and this is the first that has not welcomed you with a cup of tea and a slice of cake not a necessity but certainly a welcoming gesture.
Review 97:A great place to stay, relaxing breakfast over looking superb grounds. So easy to join the A21 to reach other places yet still feel you were in the middle of no where Great to have the option to eat in at night good menue.
Review 98:not keen on wifi wanting access to all my details on facebook
Review 99:breakfast was superb the food was excellent in the restaurant too wouldnt go a miss in a michelin rated kitchen
Review 100:Nothing I didn't like.
Review 101:The location was easy to find on sat nav, the building had character, it was like being home from home. The room was clean and just right. Breakfast was special and had lots of variety with fresh fruit, juices, jams and fresh yoghurt. I couldn't fault my stay.
Review 102:I found the pillows uncomfortable, too soft for me. I have such a comfortable sleep at home it is often difficult to match that when I go away. Sound proofing wasn't great.
Review 103:I liked the understated helpfulness from the staff. The breakfast was good quality and plentiful.
Review 104:The evening meal was absolutely fantastic ! Delicious, quality produce cooked to perfection ! Staff very friendly and welcoming...would definitely return !!
Review 105:Returning late in the evening, found no suitable space to park car with ease, presumably because the hotel was full that day. Perhaps the driveway could be laid out to make better and more efficient use of the space available? Turning out of the side road onto the A21 can be a little tricky, but you can't blame the hotel for that hotel, as other reviewers seem to have done!
Review 106:An absolutely superb breakfast menu was on offer. Unfortunately we were unexpectedly in a rush so couldn't take full advantage of what was on offer as we had hoped to. Very tempted to go back again just to experience the works! Oh - and the bed! Pure luxury!!
Review 107:The only fault we could find was that the room had instant Nescafe coffee rather than something a bit more superior.
Review 108:even though we stayed in the compact room we had all we needed - good TV/Shower/Tea and coffee etc. The meal was exceptional and worthy of a top priced hotel. The whole dining experience was very good with drinks in the lounge while choosing courses and being called through to dine when the first course was ready. All together a great relaxing evening.
Review 109:Booked a surprise weekend away for my boyfriend, he was overwhelmed to say the least but the hotel was lovely, really quiet and peacful. We stayed in the four poster bed which was so comfy we didn't even get up for breakfast! Would definatley recommend and stay here again ourselves
Review 110:Bedrooms were far too tight - I had to get dressed in the lounge! The bathroom and kitchen were not very clean in the first place and there was a sign saying that if you left any washing up they would charge you a further £20 !!!
Review 111:Staff were very helpful and it's in a really handy location. Breakfast was also very good.
Review 112:The double bed in the main room felt small.
Review 113:The Garden Suite was great for a family with two young children and can only imagine with nicer weather having a private garden would be a real treat. The breakfast as per all the reviews was beyond expectation - we have never seen a full English look so high-end and it tasted great too. And good selection for kids too.
Review 114:Nothing really.
Review 115:Good parking area, lovely garden, nice staff. There was a cutting brd on sink which was used to chop onions , no big thing but cups , sink etc smelt of onions which is my pet hate but to be fair I didn't mentioned it.
Review 116:A wonderful place to stay. Large comfortable rooms, exceptionally clean. Excellent warm and friendly hosts, and beautiful breakfast. Definitely recommend, definitely staying again.m
Review 117:Leaving.... There wasn't anything we would change.
Review 118:We loved the friendliness and professionalism of all the staff. The house was beautifully warm and cosy just what we wanted. The breakfasts were fabulous.
Review 119:Room was small for the bulky furnishings. Bed was uncomfortable. Evening meal not available on most weekday nights.
Review 120:Charming garden near Battle. Quiet location.
Review 121:Lack of Internet in the bedroom but very minor!
Review 122:We had a lovely 3 night stay here Kerry & Lorraine looked after us amazingly and as if we were part of their own family. Rooms are ample and our 4 poster bed was so comfortable. The only let down was no Internet in the bed rooms but other than that it's a fantastic welcoming and warm place to stay
Review 123:Beautiful Hotel, lovely room (had the garden suite). Fantastic couple running it. Evening meal was delicious from the Lounge bar menu, the breakfast was gorgeous, local produce, beautifully presented. A real gem of a place. HIGHLY recommended!
Review 124:The room was quite noisey as you could hear the people in the next room and above and the mattress was very lumpy
Review 125:The breakfast was very good and the room was very clean and airy
Review 126:Quite difficult to find Bluemans Lane, even in the daylight. Overgrown hedges make it difficult to exit Bluemans Lane on to A21. This is no fault of the management.
Review 127:A quiet place to relax after strenuous days of touring. We checked in early and had the choice of two rooms: I chose one toward the gardens (another reviewer had mentioned the noise from the A21 highway); my wife prevailed and chose the larger room fronting A21. We stayed there 2 nights and there was no disturbing highway noise. Full English breakfasts were excellent. Staff was friendly and competent. Owner was most gracious. We had the light dinner fare on a Sunday night in the lounge. The food was very good, the atmosphere relaxing, and a glass of the house wine (Merlot, that night) most refreshing. We heartily recommend the Claverton House for anyone staying in the Battle/Hastings area.
Review 128:Very peaceful and pleasant surroundings ideal for exploring the area. owners made you feel at home and the excellent breakfast sets you up for the day.
