Reviews for Powdermills Country House Hotel

Review 1:When there are large events taking place the other residents are not able to get an evening meal, service is very limited to normal residents. Always ask if there is a wedding on during your stay as this takes over the hotel.

Review 2:Comfortable, nice staff, relaxing place to stay for a short break.

Review 3:The bathroom was a little 'tired' and the shower temperamental - no problem as we only stayed one night but could be irritating for a longer stay.

Review 4:Excellent but discreet service which means you feel pampered but as if you are in your own home. Nothing was too much trouble.

Review 5:Heated rail in the bathroom did not work Bar staff had no idea how to make a dry martini cocktail

Review 6:The atmosphere of the English country house Dinner at the Orangery Extensive grounds It was quiet when we were there - it felt special, like being guests

Review 7:Oldy worldly charm. Pleasant surroundings-the landscaped gardens were magnificent. The staff were friendly and helpful. In fact they went out of the way to meet all of my requirements. All the rooms were spacious - the décor and furnishings were in keeping of a more stately era. The building and grounds were obviously planned to conjure up all the best refinements of a bygone age. I would imagine that the whole setting would be greatly enhanced in the Spring/ Summer season when all the grounds will be in bloom, and one can venture out to explore the surrounding countryside.

Review 8:Cold in our room on arrival. Didn't appreciate the same music over and over again in the dining room.

Review 9:Beautifully furnished. Nice food. Good value. Good location for examining the Battle of Hastings.

Review 10:A lovely, comfortable hotel in a picturesque setting! Excellent food & impeccable service from all the staff. We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more!

Review 11:Menu on photocopy paper disappointing. We had to ask for the A La Carte Menu, it was not offered for desserts so choice would have been reduced.

Review 12:Location very relaxing. Beautiful rooms. Ambiance good. Staff friendly and helpful

Review 13:Several of our rooms had issues with the showers not working properly and the internet was very slow.

Review 14:Location was wonderful, setting was great, food delicious. Overall great hotel.

Review 15:Boiler had gone wrong the day we went, bath had a crack in it,no basin plug.

Review 16:Very comfortable hotel.Confusion at the the reception on arrival Re-Hotel room, after a time the management sorted the problem out.

Review 17:We found the room cold after sunset and even though we set the heating dial it did not come on. A small fridge for the water provided would have been good; also bath robes given the cost of the room.

Review 18:We were in a junior suite which was spacious, spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and furnished. The bed was most comfortable. The in room refreshment, iron board and hairdryer were also much appreciated. Great view of the grounds from our balcony.

Review 19:Chilly bar area. Slightly intrusive preparation for functions. Few guests midweek, out of season. Standard double well furnished but a bit small.

Review 20:Picturesque, well furnished building. Peaceful location and woodland walks which the grounds run in to. Very good dinners and hearty breakfasts. Friendly, helpful staff. Easy access via A21 or by train.

Review 21:Our room was very dark and the view was of a brick wall. Such a shame considering the stunning location but maybe the standard rooms were all on that side

Review 22:The grounds were beautiful, lovely lakes and lots of searing areas

Review 23:Parts of the setup look a little tired and could do with some redecoration or update.

Review 24:Very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent food. lovely grounds. Junior suite excellent facilities.

Review 25:I loved EVERYTHING about this hotel. The grounds are outstanding, the staff friendly, helpful and very professional. Our room was incredible and the food outstanding.

Review 26:The room wasn't ready at 2.30pm and our parents who are in their 80's had to wait an hour, having driven over 3 hours in the pouring rain. The staff were not experienced or well trained. Everything, including breakfast, was incredibly slow. Had much better service at hotels that have charged a lot less.

Review 27:Lovely setting in beautiful grounds

Review 28:The food although good value and well presented was not in our opinion quite up to the mark. The mattress we found uncomfortable as very firm.

Review 29:Lovely location. Friendly efficient staff. Well appointed restaurant.

Review 30:In our first room we could hear those in the next room using the toilet what seemed like all night. The staff in the restaurant on the first evening were rather brusque and we were served the wrong meal.

Review 31:The grounds were lovely. The staff on the second day were more helpful.

Review 32:I had gone to a lot of trouble to reserve our particular room because it had a walk-in shower as well as a bath as my husband is a little disabled. It was lucky we arrived when we did as the receptionist had given it to another couple because they preferred the view, luckily they had not yet moved in and the mistake was rectified. There were other minor issues showing that the hotel lacks attention to detail.

Review 33:Staff friendly, good size room (Jnr suite) and lovely grounds.

Review 34:Minute bathroom considering room cost with an inadequate water storage system which resulted in my husband and I both having a stone cold shower at about 8.00am Sunday morning before breakfast - we did receive a small compensation on check out which was offered without any request from us.

Review 35:Beautiful location; mostly very helpful staff; very good breakfast; desk staff very responsive to a complaint about problem with shower;

Review 36:May be a little under staffed, but other then that excellent.

Review 37:The location and beautiful surroundings. All the staff were very accommodating, the restaurant was also good, will definitely return.

Review 38:walls were a little thin in the room we stayed in overlooking swimming pool. On the last night a new couple next door were, shall i say a little amorous and we could hear everything.

Review 39:great place, beautiful surroundings, fantastic food.

Review 40:No door on bathroom, leading directly off bedroom. Ancient plastic flowers.Appalling lighting in many of the rooms, including the "library"! Unimaginative continental breakfast.Plug ripped off tv aerial lead. Indifferent TV reception in alternative room.Ghastly faux statues everywhere.

Review 41:Lovely setting, romantic looking building. Excellent dinner. Lovely home made bread.

Review 42:Over priced, the price for the restaurant differs from the price in the room. We went down for dinner expecting to pay about £5 for a starter and about £20.00 for a main, starters were all just under £10 and the mains started from £20. The room did not warrant a £150 a night cost. :( tired looking. Oh and breakfast there was fluff on the floor in the dining room...looked like tumble weeds

Review 43:The grounds are nice, although you cannot walk all around the lake, almost got lost in the woods by taking a wrong turn. Felt young as the guests looked liked they should have all been in an old people's home.

Review 44:Only issue was the access road up to the Cloisters where our room was. it was all broken up and potholed. Wouldn't want to take a low slung car up there!

Review 45:amazing facilities. liked the fact there were lots of smaller areas to explore and sit - made it cosy and more romantic than a huge open plan hotel.

Review 46:Lovely setting staff all very good especially restaurant staff and food was excellent. Room was good only thing was smelt slightly damp and musty but did not spoil our stay.

Review 47:Pan pipe elevator music in the restaurant at dinner. Truly awful!

Review 48:Beautiful location. Ben at reception went out of his way to ensure we had a fantastic stay. Good food.

Review 49:all staff were lovely except one!

Review 50:My room was fabulous. Number 47, beautiful views with a large verandah and a stunning bathroom. The food was delicious, great fish and fillet beef

Review 51:Only met 3 members of staff and while Barbara was great, the other 2 were pretty flat. We even saw the owner who pretended to look for something in the back of her car rather than acknowledge us - she moved away the second we had passed by. Didn't get to enjoy breakfast as the light coming through the curtains woke us at 5.30 am. We decided to hit the road to avoid the traffic later but the restaurant wasn't yet open. Told the receptionist upon checking out about the curtains but she wasn't bothered. Also the bar area to have a drink the evening before was pretty tatty and swarming with flies.

Review 52:The location and lakes. Our room was lovely but had spiders and cobwebs.

Review 53:Not great value for money Most areas look tired and dated Staff seem stretched and service was variable Bar is amateurish

Review 54:Location is pretty Restaurant is good quality but fully priced Some staff willing and helpful

Review 55:We were 2 femail friends and had booked a twin room, but were given a double room with an offer of a z bed for £20.00 or a double x 2 beds for an extra £100.00! Nothing else was available despite the hotel did not appear to full!

Review 56:The gardens and evening meal. Our room was side on to the kitchen, with staff chatter at 6am plus some swearing !

Review 57:The setting, the swimming pool, easy walking distance to Battle. The grounds, lake, geese! Would definitely stay again - we were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary.

Review 58:The breakfast was not good value for money.eg poor selection for continental breakfast and uninspiring. Also waiting staff could do with more training. Eg remembering orders etc.

Review 59:The bedroom was spacious and well appointed. The hotel is in a lovely setting.

Review 60:One day there was a conference taking place, in the room next to the restaurant, by the time we went for our meal the meeting had got very noisy & spoilt the ambience of the restaurant. Many of the guests had to move tables to get away from the noise.

Review 61:Location good, beautiful peaceful gardens. Food excellent & attentive staff. Would come again.

Review 62:Was v warm in the room so opened windows unfortunately a wedding was going on till 12 am.shame as we got away from kids to hear others was a outdoor pool which hubby would have liked to try but the wedding group were there and we didn't think it was fair on them..

Review 63:The service was very good.clean rooms.

Review 64:Bed was uncomfortable, creaked badly. The width of tiles on entry side of bath made in difficult to get in and out of bath.

Review 65:View of grounds from room we were in was really good

Review 66:Nothing bad but more summer fruits at breakfast would be good. The bar could be better staffed at all times.

Review 67:The setting of the hotel is wonderful. So calm and relaxing. The restaurant serves excellent food. Would certainly visit again.

Review 68:Breakfast was disappointing . Minor tweaks would have improved it. No one directed us to the buffet so we had to just watch what others did. We waited for toast , then asked, then watched several tables get there's who arrived after U.S. Then asked again , then it came as we wanted to leave but my hisband was determined to eat it as we waited so long! Also , I think the cold selection was dwindled down for the later breakfast eaters. It really should be the same if you breakfast at 10 as it is if you eat at 7am? On the plus side, coffee was hot and good!

Review 69:Setting, we walked into Battle for a medieval fair and supper. Friendly bar staff and lovely grounds.

Review 70:We stayed at Powdermills on our wedding night, so arrived quite late. It was hard to find someone to greet us, and although we'd previously advised them it was a special stay they made no effort to acknowledge it, even though my wife was standing there in her wedding dress!

Review 71:The grounds of the hotel are stunning and we had a lovely walk round the lake. The restaurant was excellent, especially the dinner service.

Review 72:Only issue was that some guests went for breakfast early and as their dogs left in room could hear dogs whining for an hour before we went for breakfast.

Review 73:Hotel is stunning. Lovely walks around grounds. Restaurant meal was fantastic. Did get the room with a very squeaky bed but staff moved us after first night to an even better room overlooking the pool. Staff were all friendly and polite.

Review 74:The previous room occupiers had left bags of dog poo in a corner of the patio !! This was quickly removed by a member of staff. The bed was rather hard. This was remedied the next day with an underlay-perfect !

Review 75:The quietness and plenty of easy parking.

Review 76:The bed creaked extremely badly didn't manage to sleep at all. Also had a peacock right outside bedroom window calling, but not much they could do about that even though we were on an upper floor with flat roof of the restaurant on which the peacock was sat!

Review 77:The food was very nice and good selection

Review 78:Staff were helpful but the wedding overran the building delaying evening dining and meaning I had to have a m eal in room and later than wished. Staff did change my room and do their best but first room over wedding disco with resounding noise for the two hours before I moved rooms. The rooms were exceedingly hot meaning a poor nights sleep. Did not stay for breakfast.

Review 79:Location. Helpful staff

Review 80:Wonderful views of the lake from our room. Very helpful and friendly staff. Really comfortable and spacious room. Good food. Extremely relaxing break.

Review 81:There is no mobile signal for most networks- wifi signal was mostly ok. The staff we met were pleasant enough but didn't seem to have much initiative, from reception to especially the ones at breakfast who needed to be reminded several times about coffee, then cups, then cutlery, etc,Scambled egg was inedible as so salty. However we would still stay again as the location outweighs the staffing blips and we are not really grumpy old gits!!!

Review 82:The location is really lovely - the lake at the back is beautiful and very peaceful with lots of wildfowl and Henry the peacock, of course! Great walks right from the hotel door. Plenty of places to sit without being disturbed by other guests. Book early for rooms with best views.

Review 83:Room overlooked kitchen so noisy until late and again from 0630. Slow service (nice people but stretched too thin) especially at breakfast, where many itesm had run out by 0930 for a 1000 finish. Toast arrived after I'd finsihed breakfast.

Review 84:Really helpful staff at front desk and bar. Lovely setting. With better staffing and service could be a great place.

Review 85:Was a little disappointed with range of breakfast did not have a great range of fresh fruit . Also there was a cobweb on the top of one of the poles of the four poster

Review 86:Was really impressed with the room and the fact that we had a four poster bed . Bit disappointed that we did not have a room with a better view but was still a nice room. The bath was really nice and had a shower as well . We stayed in room 23 . We also had dinner in the hotel which was really nice we went for the three course set menu for £29 each and it was all lovely .

Review 87:The Orangery where all meals were served was cold and not relaxing, the breakfasts were not cooked fresh to order, and the bar was so tiny you would'nt know it was there.

Review 88:Pleasant room overlooking the front courtyard

Review 89:Extremely helpful and friendly staff made you feel valued. We had a junior suite, (with sunken bath) which was luxurious and very comfortable. This was our 3rd stay at Powdermills, and I am sure there will be more.

Review 90:Uncomfortable bed and sofa...in room

Review 91:The fact that it was dog friendly Lovely sunny room for breakfast. Beautiful walks into the woods, can get quite wet very suitable for the dog

Review 92:The lights in our room didn't work. Bar drinks very expensive and the house white wine was awful.

Review 93:Lovely venue for a wedding. Georgian building nicely furnished, good atmosphere, well kept grounds, good quality food.

Review 94:We stayed in The Cloisters and it was beautiful, we had a suite and the bathroom was AMAZING we would definitely return if we go back to Battle, I would recommend staying in the Cloisters if you are looking for a peaceful retreat.

Review 95:Was a bit of a mix up with our room booking, so the twin we booked took a time after 2pm to get arranged. We were offered a cup of tea in the lounge which we thought was a nice gesture for the inconvenience, but found was priced on our bill. The Gentleman in the dining room was not friendly, and on two occasions when I was speaking to the receptionist interrupted me so he could speak to them. The carpets in the reception could do with a clean or renew. Room was nice though.

Review 96:We liked the hotel's position near Battle, the building was lovely, the dining room was pretty.

Review 97:We had problems logging in to the free wi-fi

Review 98:Our room was large with a four-poster bed which was great for our Valentine's weekend! The meal in the restaurant was fabulous and the staff were very attentive.

Review 99:The breakfast wasn't good, buffet service, poor choice and cold. Last time we had a choice and silver service, very disappointed, considering the cost of our stay!

Review 100:Evening meal was excellent as was the service.

Review 101:First shown to icy cold rooms. Moved to alternatives which gradually warmed then became over heated with no means for guest control. Bathroom shower controls ineffective.

Review 102:Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent food. Nicely decorated , spacious executive room.Location.

Review 103:A minor niggle - wi-fi is free but not available in all rooms. We had to go to the reception lounge to get connected as our room was out of range. Disappointing in this day and age.

Review 104:The location of Powdermills is stunning as are their own grounds which we walked. Our junior suite was clean and extremely comfortable. All staff were attentive and cheerful and delivered excellent service.

Review 105:Although our room was lovely. The large corner bath was very old and and worn. Definitely needs to be replaced. But please keep it as a bath. Not romantic though was the lack of a door on the bathroom. There are certain bodily functions that you do not want your partner to be part of during a romantic escape !

Review 106:We received a lovely warm welcome from the lady ( Spanish ? ) at the reception. Our four poster suite was very beautifully laid out with everything we needed for our first romantic weekend away. Restaurant staff excellent. Breakfast and dinner quality of service and food exceptional. When we expressed our disappointment that duck was not on the days menu, the member of staff offered to speak to the chef. We were overjoyed when duck was brought to our table - our compliments and thanks to the chef! ! The very special chocolates with our Irish coffee in the lounge were delicious too. Fantastic service ! We took coffee in the beautiful living room. The lovely (Spanish ) receptionist willingly lit the fire - a perfect end to our evening.

Review 107:Everything, particularly the location. On arrival we worried it would be too formal posh for the likes of us simple souls. It was not, it allowed a perfect comfortable environment for all. Loved it and the hidden unexpected treasures

Review 108:Room cold, hairdryer useless. Some staff not as helpful as could be. Not good value for money. More attention needs to be paid to detail.

Review 109:Food was excellent but no fruit salad and fresh yoghurt at breakfast. Tinned fruit only or pieces of fruit in bowl.

Review 110:Didn't really know what was at the hotel til we explored in the morning. Lovely sitting area and library. Could well be more hidden away.

Review 111:The bed was the best. So comfy. In beautiful surroundings with good walks and some lovely interesting antiques but not stuffy. Had a lovely relaxing visit. Then the next day drove short distance to Battle to explore there.

Review 112:We were disappointed with some aspects of the food. Although some dishes were first class some were ordinary and portions small for some of our party (although more of the delicious bread was provided willingly. At breakfast there were nice touches like our tea and coffee orders being remembered for the second morning and a large round table kept for us. However despite the large number of staff our used dishes were not cleared and it was hard to get staff attention to ask for more tea and coffee. In addition the amount of toast provided was low and extra not offered

Review 113:The beautiful grounds and the fishing. The comfy settees in the library and the tasteful decor in our room.

Review 114:The marble floor in the restaurant was cold looking, uninviting. The wall furnishing were all different. hotel needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it up to standard. Menu was very rich and not appealing to us personally. Would not go back.

Review 115:Room was nice. mismatch of furniture. Needs money spending on the hotel. Staff friendly enough.

Review 116:Perhaps being able to set up a higher temperature would be good, although we did not spend much time in the room. One of the two radiators in the room (no. 16) was not working.

Review 117:The room was very comfortable, provided with everything we would need, and the staff was helpful and nice. Dinner was amazing, for us was the best English hotel restaurant ever (we are Italian). The location is lovely. The room with old books near the restaurant is brilliant.

Review 118:Nothing much to dislike. Weather could have been better but hey, the hotel cannot change that !! and besides, don the right clothing and get out and about, countryside is good !!

Review 119:Having been before to Powdermills, we were not disappointed with this return visit. Everything was great, staff were friendly, as before nothing was too much trouble. The roadworks, recently started, caused only a small hic-up but we got round without to much drama. All in all, the week was fine and enabled us to have a good rest from the usual drudgery. We shall return.

Review 120:This is small but it was annoying. Having asked for a G&T the bartender, without asking, poured ALL the tonic in to the glass spoiling the drink from my perspective. Also, in the restaurant we were given a pre-starter which was very nive but it was just put on the table with no explanation as to what it was.

Review 121:Food quality was very good

Review 122:Very helpful & friendly staff, good food, lovely location, clean & comfortable accommodation, relaxing atmosphere. Second visit this year with my elderly mother & we plan to stay again in the New Year.

Review 123:Some attention to cleaning required and room temperature could have been better.

Review 124:Set In a lovely location which is peaceful and quiet with lakes and wildlife. Friendly attentive staff and very good food. A very good nights sleep.

Review 125:Restaurant quality not as good as expected and priced for, staff service though was excellent.

Review 126:Free of chrome, plastic, cheap mirrors, square rooms with formula furniture. Full of interest, spaces, lovely restaurant, great breakfasts, smiling staff, beautiful grounds,

Review 127:Breakfast was greasy and repeated all day Double bed would have preferred a king size

Review 128:Evening meal was wonderful Room comfy Liked table between chairs Grounds were wonderful Staff were very professional

Review 129:Cooked breakfast was luke warm House wine dreadful What looks like a Georgian library on close inspection turns out to be modern mouldings tacked together. Very expensive for what it is.

Review 130:Fabulous location Rooms nice and clean Wonderful gardens

Review 131:When we first arrived we were told we were staying in the Cloisters a new build on the grounds and not the historic Gun powder mill we had originally booked in for however once we were in there it was quite impressive and kept in with the period of the rest of the country house

Review 132:Loved almost everything. Great accomadation

Review 133:Absolutely nothing.

Review 134:The Hotel staff were polite and friendly and the chef is willing to accommodate dietary problems.Surroundings idyllic.Special facilities for people with disabilities and dog owners.Chef is Michelin standard. Will definitely return for more holidays.

Review 135:Quite a large amount of dog's faeces on front lawn.

Review 136:very comfortable room. Friendly and helpful staff. Good food. Beautiful surroundings and close proximity to Battle.

Review 137:The hotel is badly let down by poor wifi. The system is inadequate. We found it only just worked but it was troublesome and irritating. I had the feeling that they don't understand what an adequate wifi system should provide.

Review 138:Overall a very pleasant place to stay with beautiful gardens, pools and park. Walks are accessible from the hotel. The staff are generally helpful. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Review 139:We enjoyed the interesting grounds, walking round the beautiful wooded edge of a large lake with ducks and geese, a lovely unspoilt area. We stayed in the pavilion our room had a balcony overlooking the pool, very quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was just right with a good choice. Near to Rye,one of the few unspoilt towns in England and Battle steeped in history both worth a visit. All in all a very interesting experience and one I would like to repeat sometime.
