Reviews for The Walnut Tree Inn
Review 1:Shower pressure a bit low
Review 2:Hotel has character, excellent staff, great dinner with good wines, very comfortable room, fast wifi. For the price the hotel experience here is streets above a Premier Inn or budget chain.
Review 3:Everyone very friendly. Excellent restaurant where we enjoyed an evening meal and a very good breakfast in the morning. Really nice bar area with some well kept real ales available
Review 4:Wi-Fi only worked sporadically which were told is a continuous problem. No nearby shops or restaurants for those on foot, other than restaurant/pub at the inn. Not having a reliable Wi-Fi at a hotel in 2015 is unacceptable.
Review 5:Spacious room and bathroom.
Review 6:All OK.
Review 7:The staff were so helpful, I woke up way too late for breakfast and they offered to make me a bacon sandwich and coffee before leaving. Cannot fault the place, clean nice rooms, restaurant nice and adjoining bar / pub so friendly.really good.!! Would definitely go again.
Review 8:50 metres from mainline trains meant that there were Virgin trains running past all night long so the quality of sleep was awful.
Review 9:Staff, food and room was excellent.
Review 10:The room no2 was very cold on arrival, not enough towels, noisy through the night pipes rattiling. Not very clean the bed was away from the wall & when you looked down the floor was filthy, window ledges behind blinds in their bathroom dirty, expected better standards for £60 a night.
Review 11:Breakfast,live entertainment, lite bites eaten in the bar area, very cosy & warm.
Review 12:Being next to rail track could cause some a problem. But with windows closed it is no different to hearing traffic outside.
Review 13:Love this place. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Room is clean and bed comfy. Just what I need before a day of meetings.
Review 14:Unfortunately, the band started playing late on the Saturday night we were there and we had rock and roll till midnight. There were also large party of diners enjoying themselves directly underneath our room and there is no sound proofing, coupled with night works on the railway immediately across the road it was a disturbed night. The bedside lamps were very dusty and we found a coat and phone in the wardrobe from a previous occupant so a couple of question marks over housekeeping.
Review 15:The staff were lovely, very friendly. The bar and restaurant were great and food excellent. Front of house staff more than helpful. The room was a good size.
Review 16:We were concerned about noise from the passing trains so we asked for a room at the back -no problem and no noise!
Review 17:Good food, freshly cooked breakfast, helpful, friendly staff. Spacious bedroom but although bed was comfortable, it was a small double and duvet wasn't wide enough.
Review 18:Food was excellent, the staff were friendly and very helpful. There was a plumbing problem when we were there but staff were great in resolving it and ensuring we weren't inconvenienced.
Review 19:It's a early start for any one going to a race at Silverstone and with breakfast not starting till 8AM you have to do with out.
Review 20:The location of the hotel, how local it was for Silverstone.
Review 21:Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the meal was fantastic. Great value for money. Room was lovely and clean and cosy. Great selection of breakfast too.
Review 22:We arrived and must admit that first impressions weren't great. Theroom was very cramped and very warm (no aircon), meaning an open window.Unfortunately as others have reported the hotel faces the main line toLondon, meaning a Virgin high speed train every 10 minutes or so. Backto the award-winning food, well it turns out that not only does therestaurant close early on a Sunday at 20:00, but the menu is differentto the rest of the week! The only mains available on a Sunday are atraditional roast dinner :( ok, can understand that at lunchtime, butnot all day until the close of service. No we didn't want a sandwichor salad, we wanted to savour what had drawn our attention to this placeto start with, not something that had been on the go for 8 hours. In theend, cut our losses and went home rather than stay. Equally unimpressedthe only getting the price of breakfast knocked off the bill despite themisunderstanding. I'd have been ok, with £30 (yes I know what thepolicy is, but this was exceptional in my view) but as it was, we leftfeeling duped and not keen on returning. In summary, check beforebooking and if you are going specifically for the menu avoid Sunday.
Review 23:Not a great deal unfortunately. Would be a great location if itwasn't so close to the London main line or the hotel invested indecent double glazing and aircon.
Review 24:small room, no bedside cabinet, noisy due to train line locality- not highlighted in details .Ate elsewhere as restaurant expensive.
Review 25:Good value for money.
Review 26:A few DIY-type snag repairs could have improved the appearance of the room.
Review 27:Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Very comfy bed and characterful furniture.
Review 28:We had issues with how long the hot water took to initiate. I brought it up twice during our stay but was granted a discount for our inconvenience, which was positive, and a promise that it would be investigated. Building is of historical significance to be close to the train tracks, but could be loud if you were a light sleeper - the hotel does provide ear plugs however.
Review 29:Staff were active in easing concerns about slow hot water, and very understanding, proactive in investigating issue. Breakfast was wonderful to start day. Very clean, good facilities and tastefully decorated and maintained.
Review 30:Very close railway line. Room quite cramped but adequate. Had to ask for extra bath towel as only one provided for a double room. Had friends who live locally join us for evening meal which was excellent. Would have been nice to have been able to have breakfast earlier as we needed to be at Silverstone at a set time but minor point.
Review 31:Restaurant and bar staff excellent. Food very good. Good location for Silverstone.
Review 32:Train line too close to front of hotel. Saniflow in ensuite very noisy.
Review 33:Exellent dinner service and choice, with locally sourced food. Excellent breakfast and service. Cheerful staff and welcoming.
Review 34:The only thing we felt was missing was a free standing fan the room was very hot due to an unusual British summer and maybe some blackout curtains the room was very bright by 5am.
Review 35:The location was great for silverstone not too far away, wonderful food and great service from all staff. A Pretty building with lovely features. Breakfast and evening meals were great really good quality food the black pudding starter and goats cheese were both simply amazing.
Review 36:To be fair - we arrived on the hottest day of the year and had a power cut, which is obviously not the norm and no fault of the hotel, but makes it difficult to review. Had an excellent steak. Too close to train lines, and could not close window due to heat. Again just one of those things. Perhaps fans on hand for any future heat waves?
Review 37:Staff very friendly
Review 38:Location address is shown as Northampton which is misleading as it's actually miles away so as I was attending a colleagues leaving party it cost £16 each way taxi fare! Also my room was opposite the mainline railway so very noisy, get a room at the back if possible
Review 39:Country pub atmoshere
Review 40:The hotel is located next to the West Coast main line, the train noise was noticable (although the hotel did provide ear plugs...nice touch)
Review 41:Location excellent for Northampton, Motorways, etc. Beer garden, food, service from staff all top notch!
Review 42:its location to a main line rail track meant sleep was not great and very broken especially as it was warm and the window had to be open to get the temperature to a manageable level.
Review 43:the hotel was great and the food was excellent.
Review 44:Awoke 5.40am to sound of bottle collection by a recycling lorry in the car park beneath our room. Bathroom sparse, with only 1 towel, and room could be cleaner, although comfortable. Laundry room abutting our room disturbed us at 8.30am, spin cycle making floor resonate. Some burnt toast provided at breakfast.
Review 45:Food very nice, staff friendly, the pub is spacious with comfortable seating. Close proximity to canal.
Review 46:Didn't realise so close to fast train services, unfortunately rail works all night long during our stay ! Nobody had mentioned ! No sleep !
Review 47:Staff friendly and welcoming.
Review 48:Room tiny and smelled stale. Bed terrible and the water took an age to run hot
Review 49:Staff fabulous. Special mention for Harriet running reception and serving breakfast at the same time! Food really good even though we didn't expect it to be!
Review 50:Bed was a bit soft, not great views (trainline one side, steeply banked beer garden the other).
Review 51:Nice big room, airy, good sized en suite. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 52:very steep stairs to a small room withdouble bed against wall -we had asked for "easy access" as we are elderly! (However, reeptionist carried our cases up)
Review 53:pleasant greeting
Review 54:As soon as we entered the room it was cold! It is an old building, but the radiator in the room did not work - once reported, an electric heater was provided. The hot water took ages to come through in the shower. One other thing is the duvet! With the bed made it fitted the exact size of the bed. With two people underneath it, it was like sleeping under a handkerchief! There is a railway within 200m of the pub, which can't be helped but is not ideal.
Review 55:The food was excellent in taste, presentation and, despite being fine dining the quantity was enough for a three course meal. The staff are friendly yet professional. Everyone presented as attentive and helpful.
Review 56:Very small single room for the £70 per night charge. TV remote didn't work, toilet flush playing up. No room service available.
Review 57:Free wifi worked well, plenty of parking available, friendly staff
Review 58:No issues
Review 59:Charming hotel with character. Mind your step as you enter! Parking round the back! No issues. Great friendly and understanding staff, some still to learn their trade. Compact comfortable room with shower Good food, both breakfast and dinner! Good selection of ale. Room was furthest away from bar and railway line! No noise on a Saturday night.
Review 60:The trains were a little noise during the day and evening but not a problem at night. And easily slept through in morning
Review 61:Great staff and food in bar was great too
Review 62:Staff were extremely accommodating - both in the restaurant and at reception, they were very sympathetic towards my pregnant wife and tried hard to make her as comfortable as possible, thank you!
Review 63:Beware of main line railway noise. Dated shower room and general demeanour of the whole establishment.
Review 64:Good staff and breakfast. Nice bar area. Menu looked good for the restaurant but not tried by us.
Review 65:Hadn't realised hotel was so close to busy mainline train track! Bed was only a standard double so seemed rather small.
Review 66:Very clean and friendly helpful staff
Review 67:Some dusting and polishing during a stay of six days would have been welcome, but towels and bedding were changed. Reception desk left unattended for quite lengthy periods and not too far from front entrance, (security issue?)
Review 68:Comfortable bed in a quiet room looking over the rear car park. Usually plenty of car parking space either at front or rear of building. Breakfasts served in bright and airy dining room, friendly staff
Review 69:Pity about the train line being so close. It was over the road in front of the hotel . but having said that there was no noise inside and didn't spoil our stay
Review 70:Very nice hotel, friendly staff, excellent food and service.
Review 71:The trains did keep us both awake. The room was a bit on the small side. The full English only came with 1 sausage and 1 egg which left my boyfriend hungry.
Review 72:Beautiful hotel. Amazing wedding. The staff are just lovely and cannot do enough for you.
Review 73:Only one towel in room on arrival. Only one room showing as being booked of the two I had booked on Booking.com. Mattress on bed needs replacing. Myself and the wife found ourselves rolling into the centre of the bed all night due to the dip in the centre of the mattress. Ensuite needed a revamp. Beware of main line railway at the front of the inn.
Review 74:Good breakfast and pleasant bar area. We did not have a meal here but the menu looked OK.
Review 75:The hotel was just a few metres from a very busy rail track. Fortunately it was quiet during the night.
Review 76:Everything was fine, no complaints at all But..........
Review 77:Very small room looking over the railway line which was very busy but was quieter late at night. The bathroom was nice but didnt smell very good.
Review 78:Very friendly and welcoming staff and nice food
Review 79:The bedroom no heating had to call staff for blow heater luke warm water in shower then shower blocked water did not go down wife could'nt have shower told staff did'nt go and fix it shower tray still full of water was staying 2 nights cancelled stay went home discussed not going back there £72 for a room
Review 80:There was nothing to like even the new year's eve party food was rubbish cold pork in a plain bun lettuce leaves & coleslaw and a bit of stuffing £20
Review 81:The railway line being that close and the cleaning could have been better, with previous guests empty shopping bags left in the wardrobe.
Review 82:The staff and quality of food.
Review 83:Front rooms face on to main rail line, so a bit of noise early morning...but not to bad. Have to run taps a few minutes for hot water to come through.....but be patient it comes.
Review 84:We were attending a family funeral, so to make matters simple the Location of this hotel was perfect. All the staff were very nice and the breakfast was good. Nice hotel for a short stay.
Review 85:Breakfast choice and oortions very limited , poor cold choice 4 cereal no muesli . ! One slice of bacon , one egg not expected for hotel breakfast
Review 86:Room small . We were warned about train noise but ear plugs were supplied but not needed on Saturday night Staff very friendly and helpful
Review 87:Room is cold with no warmth from radiators. Needs a good clean to remove cobwebs. Cups don't get cleaned and tea bags not replaced and kitchen staff not helpful when asking for more tea. Faint smell of drains in the ensuit. Not a place I would stay for leisure.
Review 88:Bed is comfy.
Review 89:Bed was 'shot'! Mattress well past its sell by date (Room 11) and as a result partner had a bad nights sleep. Train noise at front - very noisy mainline but hotel agreed to move us to back of hotel - much better.
Review 90:Location ideal for business. Food was first class. Parking was good (once located at rear of hotel). Reception areas good. Felt relaxed. Bathroom standard was good.
Review 91:The WiFi really doesn't work. Yes there's access points around the place but the signal keeps dropping out and it really doesn't provide a reliable consistent service that's useful for any purpose. No square pin mains plug sockets near the bed so I couldn't plug in a radio (there's no bed side radio provided) or plug a tablet to charge and use whilst in bed. Can take a while to get your cooked breakfast if there's others already at breakfast - I had to wait 20 minutes for mine on the Friday.
Review 92:I liked the location out of town and it's generally nice a quiet with plenty of free parking. The bed is comfy, breakfast is good - mostly buffet with full english cooked to order. There's also a mainline train line just across the road with intercity trains throughout the day but they don't run all night and really are not intrusive in the evening or morning.
Review 93:Was not aware that the Hotel was opposite a main train line - noisy up until about 11pm and the speed of the trains caused quite a bit of vibration in the room.
Review 94:Overall the Hotel was good - friendly, comfortable, characteristic, food was tasty and filling. Good value for money.
Review 95:The lack of warnings for all the different levels, slopes and steps in the main areas, one member of our party tripped down one of the steps, even tough it had blue lights on it, most people don't look at floor whilst walking, May benefit from a sign above
Review 96:Loverly staff, on the hotel side, But maybe bar staff need a touch of customer relations
Review 97:Shower in room 8. The glass shield is inadequate, and the shower head will not stay pointed in the right direction, resulting in water all over the bathroom.
Review 98:Comfortable room, great food in both the bar and for breakfast.
Review 99:rooms at front are very noisy with trains going passed every 5-10 minutes. Downstairs was warm but the room was cold with no central heating turned on until the 3rd complaint and that was at 18:00 after that it was warm. Went down for supper at 18:30 only to be told we needed to book and they could only seat us after 21:00. This should of been made clear at booking or when we arrived at15:30.
Review 100:bar and entertainment
Review 101:It's a great shame and do not want to overshadow a great place , but more attention to the room cleaning , dust and hair in the bathroom and extraction light fitting, and a kettle that we had to clean before using, and mould around the shower tiles. Sorry but it had to be said.
Review 102:Excellent staff greating and attention, reception, restaurant and bar areas very inviting and evening food was fantastic, small menu but enough. Breakfast was also well presented, and a good start the day. Would stay again.
Review 103:The loaction is a little remote, but you can walk to blisworth down the canal side. There is a train track oposite but this didn't seem to disturb me as i don't recal hearing any trains late at night or early morning.
Review 104:This small hotel is a really pleasent place to stay. The bar and resturant has a really nice friendly atmosphere and serves really good food.
Review 105:The proximity of the hotel to the train line meant that some of the rooms suffered from the noise however the ones at the back of the hotel were fine.
Review 106:We enjoyed our one night stay at the Walnut Tree. The saff were very friendly and welcoming, the room was extremely comfortable and the bar and restaurant were superb. The food was an absolute delight
Review 107:The room was incredibly hot and it was noisy. The room had a Saniflow toilet which was incredibly noisy throughout the night.
Review 108:The staff were friendly and helpful
Review 109:the trains, its a bit too close to the main line, the trains can be very noisy especially at night. I never noticed anything in the other reviews about the noise or the fact that the hotel was formerly known as the station hotel
Review 110:The service was very good, the staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was very good, I would recommend the steak night. The ear plugs left in the bathroom were very useful once we found them, it was just a pity we never found them until the second night as the main west coast line can be very noisy especially at night
Review 111:Sound of trains going by at night, although earplugs were available and worked well.
Review 112:The atmosphere and friendly relaxed feel. Great food and service and location good for Silverstone weekend.
Review 113:Weekend Housekeeping, showers were not cleaned properly, Towels not changed just folded and put on rail although they had been used. No telephone in the room. No early weekend breakfast although staff supplied cold breakfast alternative to suit our early start. Menu, trying too hard to be gourmet and did not cater for the general taste.
Review 114:Location to Silverstone excellent. Friendly staff. Comfortable rooms, relaxed atmosphere. Willing and able staff who were multi tasking. Good entertainment. WE enjoyed our stay and would stay there again as the staff were very willing to please. Special mention to Becks who is a great ambassador for the hotel. She worked tirelessly to make out stay enjoyable.
Review 115:Cost of food was very expensive and can't see how they can justify the price as it would have cost us over £100 for the 4 of us to eat there.
Review 116:Nice place clean room & bathroom polite staff & a nice feel to the place.
Review 117:Our room overlooked the railway which was a bit noisy but we were only using the hotel as a stop over so didn't really affect us.
Review 118:Clean and Tidy Room Comfy bed Friendly Staff
Review 119:The hotel is very near to the railway line, the shower in our room was not very powerful and water takes a while to get hot.
Review 120:Staff were very friendly and the food in the restaurant was excellent.
Review 121:A little bit far out of town, a car is a must. Located next to a busy main railway line, but after a couple of pints of real ale, slept well and never woken. Whilst the quality of food was very good, the portions were a bit small for my liking. Flat screen TV small by todays standards.
Review 122:Very helpful and Friendly staff. Good selection of real ales and wines. Good food. Rooms fairly basic, but clean. Ample free parking.
Review 123:Right next to railway track which includes freight passing every 30mins at least! Ale in the bar was stale Veggie burger was a dense and appeared to be flavoured only with lemon
Review 124:Good wi-fi Grilled Houllumi very nice
Review 125:Having asked for a quiet room (I had an important job interview the next morning), I couldn’t believe that we were less than 50 yards from a mainline railway with express trains screeching by every few minutes. When I asked if we could change rooms, I was told that they were full, but that free earplugs were supplied in the room! The receptionist said that trains stopped around 11 pm and resumed at 6.30 am; in fact they continued until 12.45 am and resumed at 2.50 am when the first of several freight trains went by. Unsurprisingly I didn’t get the job!
Review 126:Breakfast was good
Review 127:Several minor faults...light bulbs not working, broken toilet seat, unpainted wall and skirting where repairs had been made to radiator in bedroom....which spoilt the overall profile they were aspiring to. The hotel is across a lane from the mainline railway which is very noisy particularly if you are on the front of the building.Fortunately on a Saturday night the trains stopped after 11pm. Room towels were tatty round the edges.
Review 128:Lovely old historical building which has been brought sympathetically up to date.Lovely decor in the dining rooms. The food was very good both for dinner and breakfast. Earplugs were provided in the room!
Review 129:The first time we stayed here, we arrived late and the kitchen was closed but rang ahead and the staff organised some food to be left for us, so still had an enjoyable evening, the second time we stayed we were shared the meat platter which was delicious and again had an enjoyable stay, nice ambience.
Review 130:The staff could not do enough for, from the excellent bar staff to the young lady on reception, who also was multi tasking on saturday morning. A really excellent place to stay and if i am down milton keynes way in the future this is the place i will stay. Very, very enjoyable stay.
Review 131:As others have already mentioned there are very frequent loud noisy trains just across the road and they go through the night
Review 132:Staff were very friendly, in particular the lady serving behind the bar
Review 133:Water in shower was very cold even after running the shower for quite a while.
Review 134:Lovely friendly staff, comfortable room a little small but plenty of room for one night or a weekend stay. Good well kept real ales and excellent selection of wines, comfortable beer garden with excellent facilities. Food very good, good menu, would highly recommend the sharing platters - best we had in quite a while and excellent value, Breakfast again excellent value and good selection all freshly prepared, well done and thank-you. A most enjoyable stay and only a 20 min drive from Silverstone (stayed after the Grand Prix) an excellent end to a prefect weekend.
Review 135:Our room looked onto the west coast main line, trains are very frequent, but last train does not spoil time for sleep, Ear plugs provided, I would stay again as it is a very beautiful hotel and village.
Review 136:Helpful staff, they agreed to take our luggage early morning, as we where en route to F1, when we returned our luggage was waiting for us in our room. It made our day as we did not have to worry about checking in. Food spot on, very clean and comfortable.
Review 137:nothing
Review 138:Convenient location; happy to help with late arrival due road closures; excellent food
Review 139:Great food, great staff what's not to like?
Review 140:Bit close to the main train line.
Review 141:Very friendly welcome and freshly cooked Breakfast
Review 142:Constant noise from the adjacent mainline railway.
