Reviews for Bruce Hotel
Review 1:Room was clean and a good size, bed was very comfatable, staff were welcoming and friendly. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good would recommend to friends and if in the area again would stay dog friendly too.
Review 2:room and shower cold, had to call reception and ask when heating would go on before i could get out of bed and go in for shower.
Review 3:Good location, clean, friendly.
Review 4:None
Review 5:Staff v helpful with my late arrival. Front door opened for me at 3am after late ferry arrival, and Kirsty would have got me breakfast even though I was late to the restaurant.
Review 6:I left a message on booking that we had a child with us and they put a cot in the room, our child is 5 not 5 months! Luckily there was a sofa in the room which he insisted on sleeping on
Review 7:Bedroom spacious and comfy, large bathroom, plenty hot water, views fabulous, breakfast good
Review 8:Bedroom situated over kitchen and a noisy extractor fan , water marks on ceiling, and broken headboard. No lounge, the whole hotel is tired and in need of refurbishment
Review 9:Wifi connection very intermittent. The rooms are clean, but felt a little dated to me, but perhaps i am too fussy.
Review 10:Good cooked breakfast with plenty of choice. Evening meals pleasant too. Friendly staff in a family run hotel which gave the impression they all pulled together.
Review 11:Decor was tired, threadbare carpets, New mattresses needed in room 16, & curtains in bathroom motheaten holey, Wi-Fi intermittent at best. Smokers at reception door Inc staff,
Review 12:Staff friendly, efficient: Cleanliness was not an issue: Traditional Scottish decor, great breakfast, shower was powerful,
Review 13:Room décor was a little tired, mattress wasn't especially comfortable. Wifi not great - especially in the room. The evening meal was average at best...
Review 14:Really friendly and helpful staff, very good quality and filling breakfast, very nice view of the local countryside and hills from the room
Review 15:Public areas are pleasant enough but bedroom definitely in need of a makeover. Some furniture needs replacing. The leather surface was completely worn on the settee and we were sitting on the canvas backing! Breakfast finishing at 9:00 am mid-week is too early for leisure travellers.
Review 16:Good value hotel for a short overnight stay. Friendly and efficient staff. Good evening meal and breakfast.
Review 17:Good food. Friendly and helpful staff. Good sized room with a large bathroom. We will definitely stay here again and have already recommended to friends.
Review 18:They said they didn't receive notification of our booking, blaming booking.com for this, they had given our double room to someone else, we ended up in a twin. The bathroom was disgusting. The free Wi-Fi didn't work. No apologies from the manager for the mistakes, even if it had not been their fault.
Review 19:The barmaid was lovely, very friendly. We had the 5oz Rib eye steak, which was cooked to perfection, though the portion size of the chips etc was too big. The restaurant was lovely.
Review 20:Staff were excellent. Food was excellent. Hotel was spotless and quiet in a great location. We would defo stay again although the beds were uncomfortable and a bit rickerty
Review 21:We stayed in Room 14 in the oldest part of the building at the front. Unfortunately, there was no double glazing and because the traffic was constant until the early hours of the morning, we had very little sleep. We understand that the sash windows are in keeping with the building, but secondary double glazing would have helped a little to cut out the noise from the traffic. The carpet in the room was worn by the bathroom door exposing the sharp carpet gripper, not good if we had stepped on it! We mentioned it to one of the staff in the morning and she said she would have it looked at. Our stay may have been more pleasant if we had had a room at the back, as the traffic noise would have been reduced and we would have had a lovely view out to the hills. I'm not sure we would ever stay in Newton Stewart again, but if we did, we would possibly stay at the Bruce again, but definitely not in room 14!
Review 22:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Good private parking.
Review 23:The bed was very uncomfortable - old mattress with very prominent springs. We had to sleep on top of the duvet.
Review 24:Lovely staff - very polite and friendly, especially the young lad on the front desk. Great location - easy to find, within easy walking distance of the local shops, and less than 10mins from Galloway Forest.
Review 25:Decor a little dated now and bathroom did not have opaque window or any covering! No lift and on second floor with small child - it was hard work with luggage, although friendly staff offered to help without being asked.
Review 26:Great staff, big rooms and comfy beds.
Review 27:It's a friendly, well set up hotel that manages to lok aged and comfortable instead of worn and tired (a lot of small town scottish hotels are a bit like this!). There has been obvious attention to detail (mould free bathroom tiles, skirting boards haven't been kicked to death for example) and the staff were helpful and very hard working. It was really nice to stay at a Scottish hotel with Scottish local staff instead of the usual international hotel brigade who struggle with the simplest request in an unknown accent!
Review 28:Nothing. We couldn't find anything that we could say we didn't like about the Bruce Hotel.
Review 29:The staff are very helpful and friendly. The overall experience was so relaxing, even with a 6 yearold and the dog! Well worth the money. We will be back!
Review 30:Surprisingly for a small town a lot of noise from the main street outside the front of the hotel at night with boy racers and the hub of Saturday late night pub activity passing under the window but it didn't actually stop us getting off to sleep
Review 31:Relaxed place with friendly staff, nice breakfast and plenty of information on places to go around
Review 32:Very good shower but temperature marked wrong way round (so trying to make less hot made it hotter) Reported to Hotel
Review 33:Very freindly staff, indeed everyone I met in the village was freindly and greeted me.
Review 34:The evening meal was not good at all, with very tough steaks even when only cooked medium rare. The bar did not offer a wide range of beers, mainly lagers.
Review 35:Very quiet, with windows that open for adequate ventilation on a hot day. Breakfast was good, and check-out fast and easy.
Review 36:The Bruce Hotel is friendly, welcoming, relaxed, with lovely rooms, nice bar, and good food. When we had a problem with noise underneath our room the manager was very helpful in resolving our issues.
Review 37:Only one minor criticism - the erratic hot water supply.
Review 38:Very friendly and helpful staff, and excellent food. Splendid breakfasts including, if wanted, Haggis!
Review 39:The friendliness of the staff both at reception and in catering. Excellent, freshly-cooked breakfast. Excellent food at good prices. Huge twin room with nice view.comfortable
Review 40:Lack of wifi access in room. Room bAdly in need of refurbishment as was bathroom. Beautiful view but windows very dirty.
Review 41:Staff were very friendly and helpful and food was excellent.
Review 42:Fantastic hotel located in the middle of Newton Stewart. Rooms were a good sized and well proportioned and very comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic and despite only eating there for one night of my three night stay, the food was fantastic and good value for money. The biggest credit to the Bruce Hotel is its staff. All of them are friendly, welcoming and would do anything to help you out. Special mentions to David the barman and Calum the manager - both of whom were very helpful, friendly during our stay and much banter was exchanged. We arrived on the Thursday night, just in time for their weekly quiz night and it was well worth the visit for that alone (despite the fact they didn't give wooden spoons to the losing team - which was us). I would recommend this hotel to anyone!
Review 43:Friendly, thoughtful staff. We felt comfortable and would have no hesitation in using the hotel again. We liked the simple unpretentious English of the menu
Review 44:The water from the bar had a slight "musty" smell, which hopefully was a one-off.
Review 45:Very friendly staff. Location is good for visiting various parts of Galloway.
Review 46:The hotel was catering for a lot of workers, the noise at 7.30 was loud, could hear doors banging and running up the corridor.
Review 47:It was quite a nice hotel, the room we had was nice and had a beautiful view, however we also went with another couple. They didn't get a nice room, like ours which we thought would be the same as ours!
Review 48:Only the weather let our short stay down a bit, but even that wasn't toooo bad.
Review 49:The area, hotel & staff were spot on, we would both love to return sometime soon.
Review 50:A little quiet but that's not necessarily a bad thing, if you wanted a noisy, standing room only bar there is one just down the road. Decor a little old fashioned if that matters to you. We had no complaints at all.
Review 51:Off-road parking, great staff, good food, good beer. Recommended.
Review 52:A little 'tired' with some old decoration and broken window.
Review 53:The hotel was clean and comfortable with friendly welcoming staff. Our dogs were made welcome too. Breakfast was very good.
Review 54:Nice location in a quiet town. Ideal for exploring Machars,Galloway Forest and Hills. Staff were very helpful friendly and efficient. Good choice of evening meals. Excellent breakfast! Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
Review 55:Everything you need is provided - iron, hair dryer, bottled water, nice biscuits, tissues - small things but put together makes a good impression. Large, comfortable, clean room, comfy bed, nice people.
Review 56:A Great small hotel which is warm comfortable, friendly, value for money and well worth visiting. Our shooting party were well pleased and will be back again.
Review 57:The hotel is very dated. Although the room was clean enough the bath was awful. All of the enamel had been scraped off which looked really bad. The bed was too short for my partner so not much sleep for him.
Review 58:The location of the hotel to get to all of the places we wanted to visit. The staff were really helpful, pleasant and polite. The room was very spacious and the breakfast was gorgeous!
Review 59:The room No.1 we stayed was very cold at times.
Review 60:All staff were friendly to us and our dog all all times and tried their best to help us. Very clean and very good food. Enjoyed our stay, thank you.
Review 61:Decor fine if a little tired.
Review 62:Very helpful staff. Callum was especially cheerful and happy to search for a taxi for us. The quiz night was great fun again thank you Callum. The breakfasts was excellent and overalll the hotel was great value.
Review 63:It was a cold night and I woke up several times in the night wishing I had a warmer duvet.
Review 64:Very friendly staff. I was given a packed lunch because I left too early for breakfast.
Review 65:The walls are very thin so you could hear what's going on around you in the other rooms :-/
Review 66:Location is great and the rooms have a great view , breakfast was good and staff are really helpful
Review 67:The staff are super attentive and willing to help. At first it seemed a little jaded but the Bruce has it's own charm that really grows on you. Our room was big and had everything you could need as well as a handy dressing table and chair. Shower strong. Would definitely recommend.
Review 68:Just busy Road.could not sleep well, very noisy&Handle on Window broken,so could not shut to keep noise out.guest very noisy, as Room just off the straits.
Review 69:Easy location for traveling&nice long Walks.
Review 70:Always nervous driving into the car park because of the very narrow entrance but appreciate that there is really nothing they can do about it.
Review 71:Staff were great; very pleasant welcome even though we arrived about 3 a.m. having missed the ferry from Belfast. Food as always was good and staff friendly and attentive. Have always enjoyed staying at the Bruce Hotel.
Review 72:Spacious room, very clean, all staff very friendly, helpful and efficient. Great view. Very good food at a very reasonable price. Plenty of onsite parking.
Review 73:The rooms are a good size, but a bit outdated.
Review 74:We stayed in the town of Newton Stewart so we could be close to the Galloway Forest Park for stargazing. As it was cloudy, we stayed in for the evening. We enjoyed a very good dinner at the Bruce Hotel and then joined in for Quiz Night, which was great fun.
Review 75:The hotel is 'dated' and lacks a lift to the upper storey.
Review 76:The food was very good - full Scottish breakfast was top class. Dinners on two nights were very enjoyable. Tea and Coffee in bedroom was welcome. The price for B& B was very good. The local staff were most friendly, particularly the restaurant staff.
Review 77:Pity about the early call but we made breakfast anyway.(minor detail).
Review 78:99 out of 100 for our stay and made welcome.Would not hesitate to stay again if travelling from York to .Cairnyan for ferry to Ireland.
Review 79:This is a lovely hotel in the centre of Newton Stewart, the staff are all really friendly. We ate in the restaurant for evening meal and breakfast and the food was excellent. Also had a really nice room with a lovely view.
Review 80:The hotel advertises that internet access is available in all rooms but that is certainly not the case. The only place I could get it was in the lobby and even there it was shaky. They should just be honest about this so as not to disappoint.
Review 81:The restaurant staff and food were both great. I found my room to be very cozy and well appointed for the price. The parking is secluded and included - very safe.
Review 82:the thing was the beds wear too small everytime i turned over nearly fell out off bed id advise to get biger beds
Review 83:the staff was lovly the food was excellent and the location was excellent
Review 84:Easy-going about late arrival (dictated by ferry timings). Warm welcome despite the lateness of the hour. Excellent breakfast set us up for a long drive home to Hampshire.
Review 85:The hotel was clean and tidy and clearly well Managed with a nice ambience but clearly worn out and threadbare ( worn carpets and soft furnishings etc.) Toilet/bathroom very much needing an upgrade! Noisy foul mouthed occupants of a neighbouring room ( dealt with in a professional manner by the Hotel Manager)
Review 86:The Staff! And in particular, the Manager who clearly did his level best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Views of the local countryside from the room. Quiet location ( no traffic/aircraft noise.) Cleanliness of room and bed linen, towels etc. Tea making facilities. Evening meal and breakfast were very enjoyable. Hot tasty food, served by enthusiastic staff!! Great value for money
Review 87:This was the first time staying on my own in any hotel. Need not have worried all the staff were very friendly and helpfull. Nothing was to much for them. Yes I will be back.
Review 88:The room we were in was quite noisey as the window didn't shut properly and there were lots of contractors staying who were leaving early in the morning.
Review 89:The food was excellent a wide choice for evening meals and also for breakfast. The staff were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble.
Review 90:Slight noise from the road and the kitchen fan in the morning, but maybe that was just from our room. Peaceful otherwise.
Review 91:The Bruce hotel is very welcoming, lovely friendly staff, and we liked the fact that there weren't notices around with rules about staying there, so common these days. Breakfast was great and we had macaroni cheese one evening, one of the best we've had! We'll definitely stay there again, so central for exploring Galloway too.
Review 92:The smell of damp everywhere, staff on first night brilliant, staff on 2,3 night made us feel uncomfortable, could do with pool table, for something to do on an evening, as sat in room watching T.V, could of done that at home and saved a load of money.
Review 93:Views were good
Review 94:Great night at the Bruce . Room nice and clean. Good food with very nice breakfast. Off street parking was available . Staff polite and friendly. Overall a great value for money place to stay.
Review 95:Wifi not available in the bedrooms - only available in the bar.
Review 96:The staff - in particular the manager who seemed to be available to do anything for you at any time. A jovial but efficient joker who made you feel wholly welcome. Clean, comfortable and good food.
Review 97:Bathroom needed updating. Showers worked but were awkward.
Review 98:Quiet rooms at back of the hotel were spacious with good views of the hills. Staff were friendly and cheerful. Breakfast was good.
Review 99:Unfortunately there was no lift, stairlift or ground floor rooms, which presented difficulties for my stepfather who has limited mobility. Maybe we should have checked this beforehand.
Review 100:The staff were very helpful with our queries and I liked the concept of having a quiz night on the Thursday night of our stay. The restaurant service was efficient and the food was good. There was secure parking to the rear of the hotel which saved us having to park on the street.
Review 101:It didn't bother me but some may consider the bedroom decor and furnishings to be dated and the sound-proofing isn't brilliant between rooms. No elevator could be a problem.
Review 102:Friendly atmosphere; good food in restaurant amd spacious second floor room with view over the countryside.
Review 103:can't really think of anything
Review 104:staff are friendly and helpful and they were very accommodating with my gluten allergy and specially made a beautiful gluten free pepper sauce to go with my evening meal which was lovely. great value for money overall.
